Subscribe to RSSA recent voyage by the National Geographic Explorer ship to the Arctic captured a female polar bear fighting a male for food. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports on the trip, which allowed experts to evaluate the environmental changes in the Arctic.
Wildlife biologist Ian Bullock is a seasoned visitor to the Arctic, but even he was surprised by what he saw last month: a thin female polar bear, shadowed by her cub, trying to challenge a much bigger, stronger male for food.
It wasn't much of a challenge, but it showed just how desperate she was, Bullock told NBC News on returning from his 10th straight summer cruise to the Arctic.
That desperation, he feels, stems from the fact that the Arctic's summer sea ice — which polar bears using as floating stations from which to hunt seals — has been shrinking over the last few decades due to a warming Arctic, forcing polar bears into smaller areas and more intense competition.
"She was the thinnest female with cub I have ever seen," he said. "She had a single cub which implies she has already lost one other cub this year.
"If she cannot feed, she cannot suckle her cub; with a hungry cub it is even harder for her to hunt effectively, so from what I saw her last cub is at risk and ultimately so is she," he added. "This is why she was challenging a big male with food. She was hungry enough to take a big risk."
In a video filmed during the National Geographic Explorer cruise to the Arctic's Svalbard region, Bullock said it looks like that reduced ice is "really putting the bears under stress."
"The worst thing is when we've encountered bears, we've found them really packed in tight, in the last little areas of fast ice attached to land, or the last little patches of pack ice at sea," said Bullock, who served as a guide on the cruise ship. "And there they've been in competition."
Polar bears are listed as "vulnerable" and in decline by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which estimates the population at no more than 25,000 across the Arctic.
The U.S., which has two Arctic regions where polar bears live, in 2008 listed its population as "threatened".
Last year, researchers cited three incidents where polar bears might even have resorted to cannibalism due to warming and reduced sea ice.
The diminished sea ice also got the attention of the National Geographic Explorer's skipper.
Captain Leif Skog told NBC News that he had e-mailed his boss, Sven Lindblad of Lindblad Expeditions, to describe "a shocking escalation of the reduction of sea ice."
One data graph he monitored daily, showing the total volume of Arctic sea ice, "could be called the death spiral of the Arctic sea ice," he said in his e-mail to Lindblad.
Because of the reduced sea ice, he added, the cruise was able to visit northeast Greenland "a month earlier than what was normal in the past."
"We expected to face some sea ice but everything was gone in the fjords upon our arrival," he added. "The sea water temperature in the fjords was also unbelievably high."
Another expert on the cruise called the outside temperature "surprisingly warm."
"It was T-shirt weather," Paul Berkman, an environmental science professor at the University of California Santa Barbara, told NBC News. Berkman noted two other major Arctic developments over the summer:
- The amount of summer sea ice reached its lowest point in 30 years of records.
- Nearly the entire surface of Greenland's ice cap saw some melting in July, a phenomenon not seen in 150 years of ice records.
Berkman said the polar regions, and the Arctic in particular, show an "amplified response" to a warming climate ahead of other parts of the globe.
That response is twofold, he adds: Arctic temperatures have warmed 3-6 degrees F above the global average, and reduced ice removes huge amounts of reflective white from the sea and reveals a dark sea that absorbs heat.
The sea ice is like "a giant mirror on Earth's surface" he said. "Without summer Arctic sea ice, more heat from the sun is absorbed into the Earth system, which is a feedback that further accelerates warming of our climate."

Do you know how many Ice Ages there were? 4 or 5 of them. The last one ended around 10,000 years ago. Do you know what happens after an Ice Age ? Global Warming ! (several times without the benefit of man to cause it). How come Chicago was under 100 feet of ice and at other times the east coast cities were under a 100 feet of water (several times in history). Or Kansas being coastal property, or the Appalachian Mountains of the eastern US being created by the continent of Africa slamming into the east coast not once, but twice. (how will man stop that !!!) Or forests in Antartica or ice in the Sahara desert. All of this before MAN was even around to blame. For those of you who want to "stop" climate change, GOOD LUCK ! This is not a liberal or conservative issue, it is history...and history repeats itself. If man dies out tomorrow, Ice Ages and Global Warming will continue to cycle...and who will be blamed for it then?
Actually, I believe Chicago as well as most of North America was under about two miles of ice. Appreciably more than 100 feet. But it doesn't fit the story line so forget it ever happened.
And do you know who figured out all the facts you refer to about ice ages? The same people who say we are now warming the planet by adding CO2.
It's a completely bogus argument to claim that natural forces caused something to happen in the past, therefore humans can't do it now. You might as well argue that we can't be causing forest fires now because lightning did that in the past. Logically, you are trying to prove ~(P => Q) from (R => Q) and that cannot be done.
Btw, technically we've been in one long ice age for about 2.6 million years now, although the glaciations you refer to are colloquially referred to as ice ages.

You apparently haven't seen the pictures of the shrinking ice mass. There are satellites in the sky that take pictures. The pictures are compared from year to year. There is less sea ice now, which is why Shell and Exxon are now trying to get rigs up there where they couldn't previously.
Because there is less ice, the polar bears can't swim far enough to get to food. Cubs weaken first and drown.
The Russians are also going to be drilling the Artic Sea.
You don't want to believe the studies are true, because it would mean changes need to be made.,

Arctic sea ice volume is less than one fourth of what it was then.
We are seeing the Arctic sea ice vanish before our eyes.

Or look at this picture and note that the northwest and northeast passages were NEVER open before 2003 in at least several thousand years. Now you can use a simple sailboat to circle the north pole and Greenland.

I will submit that "momma bear" isn't fighting the male over food.
MOMMA BEAR is fighting off the male to make sure her CUB does NOT BECOME DINNER for the male. Males are KNOWN to kill and eat the young... especially if they want sex with momma.

Sorry, the source of the ignorance is debatable! The real argument is not if there is "any" global warming, but that is there only "man-made" global warming. I am ans environmental supporter and have had to stop donating because my health has become so poor over the years I have have no longer been able to work and have been on SSD since 2008. Medical bills, coupled with the loss of my last job-(healthcare Adminstraion ironically), and bankruptcy ended my own charitble giving but I saw the ratio of where money went and still do because I still have my voice and do my active part in raising awareness.
350.org is one such group that I support vocally as well as Clean Wisconsin where I still fight the mining bill Walker is trying to ram through the Bad River Tribal lands up in Superior with Geogbic Mining Corp from Canada Taconite Mining that will devastate that area with sidewall mining. Strip it and pollute the water supply with contaminates as waste water storage ponds are left behind after the toxic water used in the mining process has been extracted from the beautiful streams/river flowage up there and the pits formed/deepen and widened and the land forever pillaged as the taconite is ripped out. The reward for this permanent damage? About 400-500 temporary jobs and what is several billion dollars. Payback you see for the effing Koch Brothers and their investment in Walker's campaign and the rest of the rotten tea party in 2010.
I gag everytime I think about it as Walker's "budget decimated our environmental protection laws in this state, stripped our clean energy industry investments of THEIR subsidies or investments but shifted a crap pile to more FOSSIL fuels instead, bet we'll be fracking HERE everywhere and MORE dirty coal even though when the Fox River freezes over in the winter the mountains of coal the cargo ships bring in, blow so much dust everywhere the surface of the river literally turns BLACK btwn the Mason St Bridge practically to the HWY 172 Bridge. It reminds me of a time in history when some people thought the world was flat, those people didn't want to listen to scientists back then either. Plus you don't have to feel guilty for polluting the atmosphere if you believe there is no such thing as global warming.

Yes, I saw a reputed scientist claim man-made Global Warming because he had 30 years of data. 30 years...really!!! That is how you describe millions of years of global climate change...based upon 30 years??? CO2 levels have been higher in the past. Ice flows have been smaller in the past. Africa slammed into the North America in the past. But since it did not happen in the last 30 years we can ignore it. Oh the humanity ! ! !

Has this planet always had polar ice caps and ice flows in the Arctic Ocean? No, it hasn't. Where were the polar bears then? Global warming started the day after the glaciers and ice caps stopped growing. Which was a long time before any industrial revolution capitalist pigs were on the scene.

In the 1980's in Oregon, due to clear-cutting by Georgia Pacific and other companies, creeks and rivers silted in. This resulted in farmers and ranchers not having water for crops and cattle.
There are many more examples, but I'm sure you don't give a $hit. What you don't get is that the bears have to swim further to get to food. The cubs drown. So I guess you don't have to worry about the bears overpopulating. Another reason why there aren't so many baby seals would be the fur industry.

B) No one scared me into recycling. It's just common sense. People I know in the town of Ava, NY, got a landfill shoved down their throats because NYC doesn't have any place to put trash anymore.

D) I looked into polar bear hunting. In Canada you are required to use a native guide and sled dogs to get to the hunting grounds. That would leave you out, as you're the type that would need to hunt from a helicopter or plane. Greenland uses a hunting season. Which is normal with the hunting of most species. Due to poaching, Russia has negated hunting for decades, although it still happens, compromising the genetic diversity for the future of polar bears there. We stopped the hunting in 1972, and that was due to declining population. Given that half the cubs that are born, die before reaching maturity, that self-limits their numbers anyway.

HistoricFacts, most of the conservatives I've personally spoken to believe climate change is being fabricated by liberal minded scientists and politicians. They also had the same attitude towards evolution. They had the idea that both of these particular groups of scientists lived in some ivory tower where they had no connection to the real world or even associated with other scientist of any kind. They just announced their decrees to the populace with fake information to back themselves up in order to manipulate the world.

Somehow I've got a feeling that people are STILL unwilling to give up their gas guzzling SUV's, turn the lights and computers off when they're not using them, and run right out to spend 40 grand + on an "eco" freindly car or SUV.
And even if they did all of these things, those poor polar bears are still going to perish. Simply because WE, the AMERCIAN consumer, NOT THOSE BIG BAD REPUBLICANS AND BIG OIL for decades have polluted in every way we can, squandered OUR resources, refuse to do without, and are simply pigs here on this planet that is slowly dying out. Ask yourself, even if EVERY american citizen AND business stopped 100% polluting tomorrow, it dosen't matter now. The damage is done. Second, we can't control what happens in other countries like China, Russia, Japan, where they are polluting FAR worse than here, simply because they can.
All in all, I feel bad for the bears, but in the bigger picture, maybe this writer should instead offer a few solutions as to how NOT to pollute as much:
Like asking families across the GLOBE to do without heat, fuel, oil, food, electronics, cell phones, computers, tablets, etc...
After all, ALL of these items are produced with 2 basic necessary elements: Electricity, and Oil....
And we need to do EVERYTHING we can to save those bears, before it's too late! :)

The reason why they are starving is because there are so many of them. Ask any of the military installations in the arctic. In certain areas they are like pests. Starvation is Natures way of natural selection. Only the strongest survive. Nothing sad here just nature at work. If you still feel bad go up north and feed the bears yourself. The population will explode and then you will have more bears to feed than you can afford. Eventually the democrats will find a way to make a voting block out of them and provide welfare to all polar bears. Wow a much smaller female bear with a cub challenging a large male over food! I've only seen this at least 20 times on Nature or the National Geographic Channel.
How many have you seen that are starving first? Watching TV makes you an expert? Or do you have any credentials?
