A small group of radicals can, with the right circumstances, have the power to influence many.

If I was president of the United States, I would start today to implement a plan to totally remove all Americans serving in official capacities from all Islamic countries. The embassies and consulates would be closed and abandoned. All aid would be stopped. Only the spies who could blend in would stay. I would warn American business interests that we would be out completely in one year, and they could stay at their own peril.

Of course, I am not beholden to those companies that stuff money in the pockets of politicians. I could actually act in a manner that I think would be a benefit to America. I would not have to kowtow to the wealthy industrialists and bankers. Of course, because I would not take the money of the big industrialists and bankers, I would be unable to manuever my election to the presidency.

US voters are in general uneducated and uninformed. They vote on a distant glimmer - that promise made by a politician that was never intended to see the light of day.

What the hell is wrong with American leadership???? Why is this country apologizing to the these racist, hatefilled, sick, terrorists????? The film may have been a nasty piece of work but, in this country we stand up for the freedoms we fought for and one of those is freedom of speech!!!!

The issue is that the US might give financial support to governments, and make deals with them about fighting internal terrorism, but their PEOPLE HATE US. Carter lost his attempt to get a 2nd term, partly because of the hostage situation... this current situation if not handled better by Obama, will be his 'hostage situation' too... I hope there's no more American deaths because of Barry's non-existent leadership!

All this over an Egyptian filmmaker. You can tell Muslims will grab onto anything to denigrate America. If these governments can't control it then the US should cut off all aid to them and threaten them as an act of war in murdering innocent Americans.

Now lets look at who directed the attack in Egypt.....the Egyptian government, which is controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood, made sure that NO Egyptian security forces were on station at the US Embassy EVEN THOUGH the US Embassy was aware the assault was coming and had notified the Egyptian government.

In short, the Muslim Brotherhood was well aware of the attack, had used Egyptian media to incite the riot among disenchanted unemployed citizens, and arranged for their security forces to be conspicuously absent. The Muslim Brotherhood wants the hate focused away from them onto the West, predominately the US, because THEY HAVE NO POLICY for economic recovery post Mubarek.

Now they are learning there are repercussions to their actions.

Libya was somewhat different, their government is still chaotic, and was unprepared for the move that was planned by extremist elements outside Benghazi. Kaddafi had trouble with these same extremist elements, but ruled them with an iron fist. The new Libyan government is just starting to learn why.

So yes, extemist elements in Benghazi and the Muslim Brotherhood planned these events for 9/11. The other areas these events are breaking out in are more or less spontaneous reactions by extremist organizers.

But in no way do these events reflect the views of the mainstream Muslim culture. Which is why these riots are confined to only a handful of Muslim countries, and involve extremely small numbers of rioters in comparison to those countries populations.

Note how there are no staged riots coming out of Iran.

The term for scheme in Arabic is makara which denotes one who is a deceiver, one who is conniving, a schemer. It is always used in a negative sense. Allah is thus seen as the best of deceivers, the premiere schemer and conniving one.

This is not simply a Christian perspective but one thoroughly endorsed by Muslim theologians as well.

For example Dr. Mahmoud M. Ayoub in his book, The Quran and Its Interpreters, Vol. II The House of Imran, brings up the question of "how the word makr (scheming or plotting), which implies deceitfulness or dishonesty, could be attributed to God." (Ibid. [1992 State University of New York Press, Albany], p. 165)

After listing several Muslim sources he quotes ar-Razi as arguing that "scheming (makr) is actually an act of deception aiming at causing evil. It is not possible to attribute deception to God. Thus the word is one of the muttashabihat [multivalent words of the Quran]." (Ibid., p. 166)

I'm on here trying to inject some common sense into the middle of all this blind hatred. Being neither Christian nor Muslim, I don't, as they say, 'have a dog in this hunt'. That said, I'll bring up another precept of my faith system; 'An ye harm none, do as ye will.'

I decry and deplore that film. It was wrong to desecrate another's religious figure and belief system. However, although I don't believe the movie should be considered protected under the 1st Amendment's free speech, for the reasons I outlined in post 1.44, the decision will not be up to me but to our government and nothing I may say or think is going to change or affect that in the slightest bit.

I condemn, with everything I am and everything I believe in, the murder of the people in the embassies. I condemn everyone who has been killed in the name of any Deity, even my own. Taking another life, no matter who you are what color your skin is, what Deity you worship (or even if you don't worship one) or where you live is NEVER the solution to ignorance, intolerance, and hatred. So, how do we feel about our own government and the current administration trying to pass this off as an incident over a movie when it's becoming clearer since the Libyan government is claiming this was an act of terrorism and that our president was warned something like this may happen days ago - but here he is, even with that knowledge, passing this off as if the movie was the cause in order to save political face? Then there's our STATE run media supporting him while foreign news outlets around the world are reporting this as an act of terrorism.

If you haven't already, pick up a copy of George Orwell's book 1984, it is very inciteful as to how a government controls it's own populace. The greatest threat to any government is from it's own citizenry, not from a foreign aggressor. Governments generally use a constructed threat from a "foreign aggressor" to focus the anger of their citizens away from their domestic failures in order to retain political control over the masses. Both the Democrats, and the Republicans, are very adept at it, as they struggle for political supremacy.

The people that are being incited do not necessarily want to leave Egypt, they overthrew Mubarek because the want to stay in Egypt and have jobs, the chance of upward mobility, and the chance to see their families do better. Mubarek offered a corrupt, ineffective government in which the vast majority of citizens lived hand to mouth with no chance of better. Business suffered under Mubarek, and unemployment was very high.

Along came the revolution, with all the promises of a brighter future. The Muslim Brotherhood was elected to provide that brighter future, but they don't know how, the Koran doesn't come with a chapter on Economics. The foreign aid is important to them, because the clock is ticking. If their people do not see improvements in their economy/jobs anytime soon, the mob will be at their door to give them the heave-ho just like they did to Mubarek. That heave-ho doesn't include a retirement plan.

So, the Muslim Brotherhood needed a threat to focus the people's anger, and this internet propaganda video was seen as just the ticket. They used government controlled media to incite their political base, thereby diverting attention away from their failed economic policies and against the West, predominately the United States.

Only things got out of hand quickly, the Embassy walls were breached, and next door, in neighboring Libya, extremists elements murdered the US ambassador and burned the embassy.

Having an anti US demonstration with some flag burning is one thing to the Muslim Brotherhood, but somebody in the mob getting the idea to burn the embassy and murder the staff actually scares them. Egypt could face no foreign aid, and even embargo, which would not go over well with a populace looking to improve their lot in life post Mubarek.

Such a disaster could suddenly shorten the lifespan of several members of the Egyptian Brotherhood, should the mob that overthrew Mubarek become impatient and decide to overthrow them.

The Muslim Brotherhood may think they are in charge of Egypt, but they are dancing on the sharp blade of the people's scimitar.

Just an incredible amount of sheer ignorance on this thread. I'm guessing at least some of you vote and for that we should all be very afraid. In no particular order:

There was no 'apology'. The Cairo embassy 'condemned' attempts to inflame Muslims with this pathetic joke of a movie, in an attempt to diffuse an escalating situation which had the potential to turn violent. Despite Mr. Romney's apparent confusion, 'condemn' is not a synonym for 'apologize'. Look it up if you aren't sure.

The statement from the Cairo embassy was issued by a career foreign service officer, not by the administration, or even by a political appointee in the State Department.

While Mr. Romney may have initially been confused about the timeline of events as they initially unfolded, he has now chosen to lie about both the events and his response to them, rather than admit his earlier comments were in error.

From all indications, the attack on the embassy in Benghazi resulting in the deaths of our ambassador and foreign service staff appears to have been a planned attack with heavy weapons (mortars and rocket propelled grenades) and not a spontaneous escalation of the also-occurring demonstration. The attackers were not the government of Libya, so calls for the United States to remove assistance and financial support are misplaced at best - that's likely the outcome the attackers desired in the first place.

Public demonstrations are a natural byproduct of free societies. Certainly reasonable people can disagree what constitutes a valid reason to demonstrate - what enrages some people may not move others - but by and large demonstrations are preferable to repression. Frankly the demonstrations in Cairo and Yemen (and I'm not referring to the attack in Libya) don't look all that different than the riots in Paris or Oakland last year, and were probably less serious than the WTO in Seattle a decade ago.

It is likely the protestors' frustration and anger with the US goes beyond the idiotic 'Innocence of Muslims' movie and is driven in large part by the frustration with our support of 'leaders' who were internationally reliable but domestically repressive. It is important to note, though, that there are millions of Libyans, Egyptians and Yemeni, and the demonstrators number in the hundreds. We should not believe that the demonstrators represent the sentiments of the populations of these countries, or of their governments.

Chief...well put. All of the governments in the middle-east with the exception of Saudi Arabia, Israel and Iran exist on the razor's edge with no more substance than smoke. A shift of wind and they are swept away to be replaced by another attempt.

A lot of people don't understand that most of these people have never experienced democracy. The ones who have only briefly. Take a hard look at our history as a nation. The first 100 years was pretty rocky and compared to the average person in the middle-east, we were well educated with a long tradition of democracy (give or take a king or two).

If it comes down to it, we can disengage from the middle-east and cut aid to them. A somewhat hazardous course (keep your friends close and your enemies closer), but all this saber rattling is BS. We can't afford to go to war with the entire middle-east. OEF/OIF should have taught us something.

The reality is that the protests were planned before that 'trailer' was released and were intended to occur on the anniversary of 9/11. Both Obama and the governments of Egypt and Libya were aware of the planned protests, and the failure of Obama and the foreign governments to protect the lives and property at the embassies was a FAILURE by the Obama Administration.

How could Obama not take steps to protect our embassies on the anniversary of 9/11 when he was aware that protests were planned? He should have demanded that the foreign governments take security precautions instead of waiting until after the fact, and then looking for scapegoats. Almost nobody gets upset when Jesus Christ is mocked by fringe groups, so Mohammad is not entitled to any special protections.

Over the course of my military career, I have had the honor to serve alongside the US Marine Corps on numerous occasions; I have nothing but respect for them individually and as a branch. It is my personal belief that the Muslim Brotherhood just picked 9/11 as a fitting day for their demonstration against America, while the Libyan extremists independantly picked 9/11 as the day to carry out a revenge assault targeting the US Ambassador and the embassy. Now they are calling for a stop to the rioting, and their police are battling the rioters in the streets. A real 180 degree reversal from earlier in the week.

Post 9/11/2012 we have had other incidents, like the burning of the KFC, but I tend to believe these were just copy cat acts of vandalism. Since 9/11/2012 was Tuesday, and these incidents are occuring as late as Friday, I don't think they were originally planned.

To them, their government always approves or disapproves their actions, and if someone says something wrong, they become a criminal in Egypt, or in Libya, or wherever. Anyone who thinks the demonstrations and violence in the Islamic world are solely about the vile video is severely misguided and lacks understanding of what is going on in the Middle East. It was merely the spark that ignited some very dry tinder that has existed for a long time.

The countries in which the demonstrations are taking place are underdeveloped, have rapidly-growing populations and high unemployment, especially among their youth, and which recently have replaced long-standing despotic regimes with newly-elected, mostly Islamist, governments.

These nations are experiencing a population "bulge" of young people in their teens and twenties who are, for the most part, undereducated, unemployed and easily radicalized. Some, particularly in Egypt, are merely "soccer hooligans" who always are out looking for trouble.

The revolutions have not brought these young people the changes they had expected: jobs and a better life. The only thing they have brought them are newly-found freedoms of speech and assembly, which they now are abusing.

The genie is out of the bottle, and it will take a generation or longer to contain it.

Well folks, I am as tolerant as the next man and more tolerant than most of the usual suspects on this board.

But, enough is enough. It's time to close our embassies in these countries and bring our people home. Cut off all foreign aid to these countries and let the Brits and the French deal with them. Think of the billions of dollars we'll save.

I understand that Muslims the world over are deeply offended by cartoons and movies depicting their prophet. I also understand that they sometimes use these sensitivities as an excuse to act out like they are doing now.

What I don't understand is why we still give them money or do business with them in any way. We are far more punitive to CUBA than we have ever been to the Middle East (except Iran, with good reason) and I don't see why we continue to poor our money down these rat holes. I also don't know why we send our diplomats into harms way or allow American companies to send their employees to these places. They can't do business with Cuba. They can't send people to Cuba. Why do we let them put us in this position?

Oil? Who needs it. If we were forced to do so we could reduce this country's dependence on oil by more than 50% in less than five years. We'd be able to produce enough oil and gas to meet our domestic needs for another 25 years or more while we develop cleaner, renewable energy sources.

So, pull out people out. Send their people home. I'm sorry, but enough is enough. They stew in their own juices, kill each other, starve or die for lack of medical care. We've got our own problems to deal with and we don't have money to waste on people who repay our kindness and generosity with death and destruction.

The seat of Catholicism has been in Rome since Peter founded it (a bit before 1929). We know that you are not Catholic or even Christian because of your insistence on saying, "your Bible". What you need to understand is one major point: Islamic Extremists believe that anybody who does not believe in Islam is an infidel. They believe is Sharia Law and that oversees any "rules" or "laws". They believe that a small group dictate to the world what you CAN do and what you CAN'T do. The United States stands up for personal freedom and religious freedom - so they hate us and no matter how many times Obama apologizes for the United States the Islamic Extremists still hate us. Ironically the LAST time we had an incompetent spineless useless and pathetic president (Jimmy Carter) the economy was ALSO tanking AND Islamic Extremists were rioting and damaging embassies AND, you guessed it, the LAST time an ambassador was killed due to an embassy being overtaken was during the Carter administration as well. Spineless and useless presidents beget the same damaging economy AND foreign policy.

So what to do now? We need a president with a spine first of all but then we should:

1) Immediately remove all ambassadors and civilians from these embassies.

2) Immediately cut off foreign aid from any country whose embassy is in danger and our personnel were forced to leave.

3) Because an embassy IS considered U.S. soil it should still be protected as such so between 100 - 200 skilled servicemen are dropped in to protect the embassy and its property from further damage with enough firepower to eliminate anybody who so much as steps on U.S. embassy soil and/or throws/shoots projectiles for the purposes of damaging property. I would go one step further notifying the rioters via pamphlets (dropped by U.S. helicopter) that each and every bullet in the firepower they are in site of has been coated with pig's blood and if shot by one of our servicemen that pig's blood will be mixed with their blood if shot.

I am tired of this president showing such severe weakness. And our BIGGEST ally, Israel, has been snubbed so much by our president they have now stated publicly that the U.S. can not be relied upon to help protect Israel. I grew up Catholic Christian. Went to private schools taught by nuns. And so, while I have met many good Christians and a few bad ones, I have also met many Muslims, many good and a few bad. I've done the same with Jews, Buddhists, Odinists (volunteering at a very busy inner-city animal shelter exposes you to many people of many faiths and many ideas) but the fact that we all care for and want the best for the helpless homeless animals we help care for gives all of us common ground, and while we may discuss theology while walking dogs, in the end practically everyone I've me agrees:

Amanda, I am incredibly impressed with the grace that you have displayed throughout this discussion. I completely ENTIRELY disagree with your take on religion. I am a follower of Christ, and hopefully, one of the good ones you have mentioned. But I would just like to say that you have displayed a level of grace that many Christians would do well to match. It is clear that you have attempted to educate yourself on the beliefs of others, and for that, I commend you.

To your post about knowing more of the Bible than Christians-Christianity, in the U.S. is fickle. It had been so widely accepted, that it really took no work to be a part of. It was just so ingrained, that it was taken for granted. People just identified that way because their parents did (whether they knew it or not). With your choice, you had to purposely go out and educate yourself. You had to weigh your options. So naturally, you would be more inclined to learn as much as you could about the different faiths. I suspect, as Christianity becomes more and more relegated to the fringe, Christians will need to start seeking this knowledge again some day. So while many factions of the church are uneducated now, blindly spouting scripture out of context, hopefully, for our sake, that won't always be the case.

If you watch the movie that has these guys all riled up and watch the news reports from outside the guy's home who made the movie, look at the double doors of his home. When you watch the movie, you'll see these same double doors with their fan shaped windows, but from the inside of the man's home. The movie was very low budget and stupid, the sound quality sucks and it's pretty cheesy. I guess Muslims are trying to show the world that their religion isn't violent and full of murderers as it is depicted in this movie by committing violence and murder!

But how can that be when the major rift between Sunni and Shiite happened over the Shiites killing the last living descendant of Mohammad hundreds of years ago? FYI, many of us who came of age in the '60's and '70's are/were very productive citizens, started small businesses, some became large corporations (ie: Microsoft, Apple). Many of us are very successful, have homes that are either paid for or could be paid for if we chose to take our cash and payoff the mortgage, etc. We are the first generation that went from guaranteed pensions to 401(k) plans, from corporate fully paid health insurance (through retirement) to paying our own way and we've made it.

While it initially cost Billions, the American taxpayer has reaped a profit on the investment and saved millions of jobs in the process. Perhaps you should go back to school and learn that Protectionism has ALWAYS FAILED and how many jobs would have been lost had the bailouts not occurred.

All that wealth you created will not pay back the debt you used to create it. Also, I did not mention the GM and AIG bailout, but since you brought it up, you're welcome for getting 700 billion more of our money to save the jobs your generation put in jeopardy in the first place. Or at least the ones that you haven't outsourced. What's the unemployment rate for 18 to 25 year olds?

It is time for you to look beyond your comfort zone and realize that we are all in this together and life is not easy. You can't be successful working 9-5. Look at every successful person you know, how many hours do they really work? Look at the POTUS; doesn't matter who is in the oval office, the fact remains those guys work virtually around the clock. Ask any Secret Service person on White House detail how many times they jerk the POTUS out of bed in the middle of the night to inform him of some crisis somewhere in the world. Or how many threats are fielded by the FBI/CIA/SS against our elected officials and our country in general?

Can't get beyond our comfort zone, you wont get out of the way. And are you really bringing up the President (any of them)? The millionaires that live in a publicly funded palace while they divide up more of the money we ran out of a long time ago? Oooh what a beacon of inspiration!! Millions of people who work 9-5 believe they are successful, because they love what they do and they are happy doing it. Just because you think wealth equals success doesn't mean the rest of us have to.

Life is a delicate balancing act. Besides the above issues, you have people in poverty that must be treated fairly. And how do you define fairly? What is right and what is offensive?

Well your generation did create all that wealth, you would think you would do something about the poverty in this country. But I guess it's easier to keep all that wealth for yourselves, and pass the issue on to us. Nothing is fair if it is done at the expense of others.

When you grow up and learn that the world does not revolve around you, then you have a better understanding of just how significant or insignificant one person really is. It's all a matter of how you conduct yourself.

I'm not talking about one person. I'm talking about the next generation, the future. Do you honestly think that what you were given is going to be better when you give it to us? No matter how I conduct myself, I will do it with accountability, I wish the past would have done the same.

We can never prevail over these “misguided souls” while we turn a blind eye and allow radical and aggressive Imams to preach in mosques on our soil nor can we win over a religion whose followers can’t think for themselves and live their lives according to their teachings.
