At least seven reported killed in regional protests over anti-Islamic video

Clashes near the US embassy continued in Cairo while in Sudan, British and German embassies were both targeted. The violence continued for a second day in Yemen, with protesters burning American flags. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

New in this version: U.S. sending 50 Marines to embassy Sudan

Updated at 6:35 p.m. ET: At least seven people were reported to have been killed Friday across the Middle East and Africa in protests over the anti-Islamic video that led to a deadly attack on a U.S. consulate in Libya this week.

Tom Capra, Catherine Chomiak, Roxanne Escobales, Charlene Gubash, Elizabeth Leist, Claudio Lavanga, Jim Miklaszewski, Ayman Mohyeldin, Amna Nawaz, Daniel Strieff and Mike Taibbi of NBC News contributed to this report. Follow M. Alex Johnson on Twitter and Facebook.

The U.S. said late Friday it would send 50 Marines to reinforce security at the embassy in Khartoum, Sudan's capital, where the Arabic news service al-Arabiya reported three people were killed Friday afternoon in a protest.

Unrest worldwide was centered mainly on U.S. embassies, but other targets also came under attack, including embassies and other outposts of Britain, Germany and the U.N.

Google Inc. rejected a request by the White House on Friday to reconsider its decision to keep online the controversial YouTube clip of the trailer for "Innocence of Muslims," an unreleased U.S.-made movie that depicts the Prophet Muhammad as a womanizer and a gay child abuser. The Internet company said it was censoring the video in India and Indonesia after blocking it in Egypt and Libya.

A spokesman at the embassy in Khartoum said guards on the roof fired warning shots after hundreds of protesters breached the embassy's security perimeter and some tried to climb over the wall.

There are two very different sentiments on the streets in Benghazi – demonstrators burning the American flag, and others who support the United States. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

No members of the embassy staff were injured, the spokesman said.

The protesters moved to the U.S. compound after violent rallies outside the German and British embassies, which are near each other. Witnesses and police said as many as 5,000 protesters surrounding the two compounds were dispersed when police opened fire with tear-gas canisters. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

In Tunisia, two people — at least one of them a protester — were killed and 29 others were injured outside the U.S. Embassy in Tunis, the Health Ministry said. At least two of the injured were in critical condition, the ministry reported, according to the official Tunisian news agency, TAP.

The protesters gathered at the embassy after earlier having set fire to the American School, which was closed Friday, the embassy said in a statement. Both the school and the embassy sustained "severe property damage," it said.

A protester was killed in a clash with police near the U.S Embassy in Cairo, a security source told Reuters. The victim, who died from birdshot wounds, was the first person to be killed in Egypt.

Protesters hurled stones at police, who responded with tear gas.

From Northern Africa to Indonesia, protesters — sparked by outrage over an anti-Islam film produced in the U.S. — marched in sometimes-violent demonstrations. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

The Muslim Brotherhood said on Twitter that it was canceling its call for nationwide protests about the film. However, it said it would still be present in Cairo's central Tahrir Square "for a symbolic protest against the movie."

And in Lebanon, at least one person was killed and 25 others were wounded in protests in Tripoli timed to coincide with the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI on a three-day visit, Lebanese officials said. Hundreds of people set a KFC and Hardee's restaurant on fire, witnesses said
Demonstrations continued to rage across the region Friday, the Muslim day of prayer, in protest of the clip on YouTube.
Google said was further restricting the clip to comply with local law rather than as a response to political pressure.

"We've restricted access to it in countries where it is illegal such as India and Indonesia, as well as in Libya and Egypt, given the very sensitive situations in these two countries," the company said. "This approach is entirely consistent with principles we first laid out in 2007."

NBC's Richard Engel in Egypt and NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin in Libya report on what might have triggered recent attacks on U.S. facilities.

White House officials had asked Google earlier on Friday to reconsider whether the video had violated YouTube's terms of service.
Google said on Wednesday that the video was within its guidelines.

Why films and cartoons of Muhammad spark violence

Any depiction of Muhammad — favorable or not — is considered blasphemy in most of the Muslim world; the sheer grotesqueness of "Innocence of Muslims" made it a particular provocation.

Four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens, were killed Tuesday night in two attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton attended the return of the remains of the four Americans at Joint Base Andrews in suburban Maryland on Friday afternoon.

Members of the Senate Armed Services Committee who were briefed by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Friday that it seemed clear that the Libya attacks were planned and premeditated. They cited the weapons carried by the attackers as the primary evidence.

"From all that I've heard," the attacks Tuesday night "were not just some coincidental protest of this film, this anti-Muslim film," said Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn. "They were a well-planned and professional terrorist attack against the U.S. consulate in Benghazi."

Clashes across region
In addition to Sudan, Tunisia, Egypt and Lebanon, demonstrations Friday spanned numerous countries across the Middle East and northern Africa:

•  U.N. multinational peacekeeping observers in the Sinai Peninsula were attacked by demonstrators protesting the movie, Israeli TV reported. Three peacekeepers from Colombia were injured in what appeared to be a coordinated attack using handheld explosive devices and automatic weapons, a spokesman told NBC News.

NBC's Michael Isikoff and Roger Cressey discuss Nakoula Bassely Nakoula, who is suspected of producing the controversial film degrading Islam.

• About 50 U.S. Marines have been sent to Yemen to provide additional security in the aftermath of Thursday's attack on the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa, Defense Department officials told NBC News. The Marines, part of a Fleet Anti-Terror Security Team, are an identical unit to the one sent to Libya earlier this week.

• A large demonstration against the Muhammad movie broke out at BMCI, a bank in Nouakchott, Mauritania, the U.S. Embassy said. It urged all U.S. citizens to avoid the areas around the bank and the Embassy.

• The UN multinational peacekeeping observer mission in the Sinai Peninsula was attacked Friday. Four people, believed to be peacekeepers from Colombia, were reported to have been injured. The multinational force observes the compliance of the Camp David peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.

• In Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, about 200 protesters vented their anger by chanting "death to Jews!" and "death to America!" in a largely peaceful protest outside the heavily guarded U.S. Embassy in Jakarta.

• Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Amman, Jordan, chanting for jihad and praising the late al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and the killers of Stevens in Libya.

Protesters clash with security forces after setting a fire at the German Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, on Friday.

In Pakistan, protests cropped up in major cities such as Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad, but Friday prayers seemed to have passed without major incidents of violence, NBC News reported.

• About 200 demonstrators gathered Friday outside the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait and hoisted banners.

• In Bangladesh, Islamists tried to march on the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka, and Iranian students protested in Tehran.

• In Nigeria, where the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram has killed hundreds of people this year in an insurgency, the government put police on alert and stepped up security around foreign missions.

• Protesters in Afghanistan set fire to an effigy of Obama and burned a U.S. flag after Friday prayers in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

Using the video as a reason for these anti-American demonstrations is a crock of s**t. This is an organized attack on America by radical Muslims. If it wasn't the video excuse is would be something else. If these people had a job maybe the wouldn't be out there raising hell. But first they have to learn what civilization is before they can work in it.

I wish our news outlets would quit reporting that all of this is over that stupid youtube movie trailer. That is merely the excuse for this violence. It would be happening without the movie. They would just be pointing to some other "trigger" for their violence. This is all about Islamic Fundamentalist anger toward the west because their imams require it. They behave more like animals than human beings.

And all the junk people write on these blogs can be read by people of all countries and adds to our image as "Stupid. ignorant Bullys" It endangers our country and every soldier overthere.

Why are we there? Not so much for terrorists as Global Expansion of the Market. Corporations and investors grabbing every opportunity to make a greed based Profit. Corporations must work on our Shores, not theirs.

This has nothing to do with an obscure movie. That's just the liberal media spin and Muslim @ss kissing. This is an outright attack on US interests launched on the anniversary of 9/11. The movie is just an excuse. Why can't the liberal media admit that the Muslims are launching attacks on us instead of peddling this on some lame movie?

It's nice that you hold to the American values of tolerance and free speech, not the history of the Catholic Church or any of the other Christian denominations that prior to America would have done so. Just a reminder that Paul tells us to "Overcome evil by doing good".

      #2456.1 - Fri Sep 14, 2012 3:31 PM EDT

So basically you're saying that the Muslim faith isn't as "evolved" as the Catholic faith? Or was that supposed to be a dig at Catholics?

Sure the Catholic church is rife with violence... violence that ended centuries ago, yet the Muslim religion still practices these very ideals.

Bear in mind, I have nothing against ANY religion, my problem is with IDIOTS doing idiot things in the name of said religion.

Did the Catholics do it? You Bet

      Protestants? Sure

      Jews? You better believe it.

But most of that is ended now. It's not the religion, it's the people, it's time for the Middle East to evolve. They don't have to give up their ideals, but they all need to take anger management classes at the Y.

I don't understand this, people say and do anti-christian things all the time and i can't recall retaliation from any christians to this extent. What is wrong with these people, why are they being so violent over a film. everyone is entitled to their opinion. You don't need to hurt and kill people and set things on fire because someone had an negative opinion about you.

Because in their culture they take this sort of thing very seriously. They don't live under the same conditions we do and in fact they are incredibly Conservative when it comes to their faith.

This is the huge culture gap between the West and the Middle East. We will never see eye to eye and ultimately this will blow out into another world war.

          I guarantee it.

The film was just a triggering mechanism, kjh. These people hve been taught for the past fifty+ years that Westerners want to wipe out Islam. That is engrained into their DNA and now certain ones of that teaching are finding their way into positions of power and influence. If not the film, something else would have eventually triggered the events we are witnessing. The tighter one keeps the lid on a boiling pot, the greater the explosion when it finally erupts. These demonstrations will eventually die down of their own accord ~ unless someone interferes and makes matters worse.

When Jesus hung on the cross to save mankind, he didn't entitle white people to hang black men on a tree for Sunday afternoon entertainment as was done for many decades; and the New Testament does not promote revenge -

38“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’g 39But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

43“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighborh and hate your enemy.’ 44But I tell you: Love your enemiesi and pray for those who persecute you, 45that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

              How many Christians practice this?

You are an idiot, and a racist bigoted hypocrite. YOU disgust me, your racist pig.

Turning the other cheek means you don't do to them likewise, IT DOES NOT MEAN YOU STAND THERE WHILE THEY RAPE YOUR WIFE (which blacks did and still do today) and KILL YOUR CHILDREN MORON.

You PRACTICE THIS....."If your hand offends you then BUT IT OFF, or if you eye causes you to sin then PLUCK it out."

I think YOU need to some cutting off and plucking out yourself. And I know many Christians that "practice what Christ said". You don't practice what Christ said and do not have a CLUE what the Bible means.

How about "The KINGDOM OF GOD is subject to VIOLENCE and the VIOLENT take it by FORCE"? Tell me what that means as well. You psuedo Christians take portions out of context because you are cowards not willing to be martyred for standing against EVIL or WICKEDNESS or SIN and call yourselves tolerant and compassionte while all you are is CARNAL CHRISTIANS.

                Mathew 7: 15 - 23:
15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

From a historical practice, there are more mixed racial backgrounds because white men raped black women than the other way around. the Conservative Tea Party movement today is nothing more than a resurrection of the KKK in an effort to take America back to the days when they were not held accountable to their lawlessness.

There is, I believe, a point of no return that can be reached where one is either on one side of a threshold or the other. It matters little how this line is crossed; it happens daily in human events and many times, it is due to the actions of third parties who effect those around them without so much themselves.

Here I do think we have reached such a place and that any notion of an Arab Spring that might result in a Middle East free of secular hatred and religious-based violence, has now passed. Some of this is due to whomever made the video in question, some is based on a lack of leadership in Washington (and in the west, in general) and some is based on Islamic extremism. But regardless of the parts, the mechanism is in motion and the outcome now fairly clear.

Things will get much, much worse before they begin to get better... if ever they even do. This can all be traced back to 9.11 and the chain of events, as set in motion by certain people.

                      This is what is said

Nfaalnfak between the Muslim population is very clear. We help people to rid Afghanistan of the Taliban's repressive regime. We use drones to take out top al-Qaida leaders and their commanders and minimize civilian casualties rather than using grenade launchers. We create schools for women and children, and build infrastructure in hydroelectric dams, roads, agriculture, education and medical care.

What we get in return? Anger by people about using the drones Muslim where kills sorry that few citizens in the wake of the guarantees. There are demonstrations across the Middle East condemned these attacks not one peep from the Muslim world but when Taliban and Al-Qaeda, the murder of thousands of innocent men and women and literally Muslim children with improvised explosive devices, suicide bombs indication when in mosques and markets, Government and security stations throughout the Middle East and especially in places such as Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Where is the outrage by Muslims? Such hypocrisy!

Where do Muslims indicating moderate to America to help them rid their country of repressive regimes. We spend billions of taxpayer dollars to support the puppet government where corruption is endemic. Government officials in the corrupt Karzai Government see the writing on the wall. Taken by American taxpayers and buying property in Qatar, Bahrain, UA and other Middle East countries because they know that the ousted government soon. I guess Viet Nam.

We pay us such experts called in Washington? Then we have Iran. No penalties against Saddam Hussein? No! Iran will not work with either especially when still sell their oil secretly in SE Asia! Should we let Saddam Hussein in power and domination of the Iranian checkpoint. At least they kill each other from every couple of years.

US foreign policy of both parties is failure. Finish building the nation with taxpayer money and trying to instill the values of political democracy and freedom in religious thought which States are opposed to these values

It's time to look at the BIG picture. This video emerges after being around how long? Now there are protests worldwide with an election year in full swing. Israel is not pleased with the policies that are attached to the White House, particularly since they haven't decimated any of their Arab neighbors or done any of their other dirty work for them. Look closer and anticipate finding these thieving miscreants in the background and orchestrating the entire event.

This never had anything to do with a video. If the media in the region, while trying to prop up Obama, hadn't explained about this video, they never would have stopped chanting "Obama, Obama, we are Osama".

This has nothing to do with a movie. It has everything to do with the President of the United States Barrack Obama and his hate for America.

A minute ago, I wrote a comment on Stephen M Walt's piece on Foreign Policy (Blog).

My laptop is nailed to me. There is no way I and my internet savvy laptop could be separated.

Stephen, my good buddy, didn't know you and I had anything in common. If you talk about poetry, the last place to quote one, on a conservative blog, such as this, I could regale the eager audience with poetry, in general and my most favorite Irish poet:

                            Every event in action or in thought;

Measure the lot; forgive myself the lot!

When such as I cast out remorse

So great a sweetness flows into the breast

We must laugh and we must sing,

                            We are blest by everything

Everything we look upon is blest

                            William Butler Yeast

A Dialogue of a Self and Soul

Getting back to the business at hand, I suggest FP stop making irrelevant statements. You are one among the others. Chistopher Chivvis and others are making it very difficult to understand what is that happened in Bengazi, first and in half a dozen (Muslim) countries, later.

Few and far in between references to (Al Qaeda revenge) planned operations is our usual culprits. Al Zawahiri, bunch of Islamist Mullahs, Friday prayers could be made to suffer for this latest scandal.

I do not believe a single event, a purported blasphemous movie made by a Egyptian Coptic and promoted by our own Muslim hating pastor from Florida could incite such hateful reaction.

It is our quest to kill as many as our drones could, all those suspected Al Qaeda operatives is what is shaking the Muslim world.

Stop that nonsense. For one dead (Muslim) terrorist, there shall be ten thousand (Muslim) martyrs.

Revenge is mine, thus sayeth the Lord

As I recall, it was Obusho that invaded the Arab world, not Obongo. And as I recall, the tensions in the Middle East began to tighten in the late 1940's. So I don't think you can lay this at the feet of Obongo. Nice try, though. Thanks for playing.

So you are saying someone else laid the explosives (you are blaming someone else, aren't you?) and all Obama did was sit there and throw matches at it?

It's time for all U.S. interests to exit these countries and destroy the existing businesses and our embassies, even if they happen to have "innocent" civilains in them.

Time to stop babysitting the kids and let them fight among themselves since the majority will no longer have jobs.

Ok so Obama has tried to play nice with the Muslims. It's time to realize this doesn't work. It's time for us to bring all our troops out of the middle east and let them fight among themselves. Honestly no matter what another country does to help, the extremists are going to blame the U.S. for all of their problems.

                              The first wave of the
economic tsunami (2007) that swamped the economy led to the Election of “The
One, Barrack Hussein Obama”. This was set into motion with the infamous
President Carter and the Housing Resolution Act of 1977. This Act in the name
of social justice forced Banks and Mortgage Companies to give home loans
without regard to the applicant’s employment status, income, sanity or credit history.
The ability to repay a loan should never be a factor for the financially
impotent who in turn support the Democrats. President Bill Clinton put this
sub-prime loan scheme on steroids. The recession of 2008 was largely due to the
prior scheme of the Democrats. “A Government sponsored home loan for everyone
is a vote for me”. As all ideas from the Democrats, this venture was doomed to
“crash and burn”. Bubba vetoed drilling in An war, made our best coal reserves
in the west a national park and gave N Korea two nuclear power plants. Clinton
had 3 opportunities to capture Osama, but was occupied with a Lewinsky. Yemen
had Osama in their possession and asked Bubba to take him, which he
                              refused. This act of negligence
sealed the fate of those killed on 9/11.
                              George W. would never stoop
so low as to blame his predecessor for all his problems as President. He
inherited also a recession brought on by the collapse of the Dot Com Bubble.

                              By MANSOOR IJAZ

President Clinton and his national security team ignored

several opportunities to capture Osama bin Laden and his terrorist associates,

including one as late as last year.

                              I know because I negotiated
                              more than

                              one of the opportunities.

                              From 1996 to 1998, I opened
                              unofficial channels

between Sudan and the Clinton administration. I met with officials in both

countries, including Clinton, U.S. National Security Advisor Samuel R.
                              "Sandy"

Berger and Sudan's president and intelligence chief. President Omar Hassan
                              Ahmed

Bashir, who wanted terrorism sanctions against Sudan lifted, offered the arrest

and extradition of Bin Laden and detailed intelligence data about the global

networks constructed by Egypt's Islamic Jihad, Iran's Hezbollah and the

                              Palestinian Hamas.

                              Among those in the networks
                              were the two hijackers who

piloted commercial airliners into the World Trade Center.

                              The silence of

the Clinton administration in responding to these offers was

                              deafening.

As an American Muslim and a
                              political supporter of Clinton, I

feel now, as I argued with Clinton and Berger then, that their
                              counter-terrorism

policies fueled the rise of Bin Laden from an ordinary man to a Hydra-like

                              monster.

                              Realizing the growing problem
with Bin Laden, Bashir sent key

intelligence officials to the U.S. in February 1996.

                              The Sudanese offered

to arrest Bin Laden and extradite him to Saudi Arabia or, barring that, to

"baby-sit" him--monitoring all his activities and associates.

                              But Saudi

officials didn't want their home-grown terrorist back where he might plot to

                              overthrow them.

                              In May 1996, the Sudanese
                              capitulated to U.S. pressure

and asked Bin Laden to leave, despite their feeling that he could be monitored

                              better in Sudan than elsewhere.

                              Bin Laden left for
                              Afghanistan, taking

with him Ayman Zawahiri, considered by the U.S. to be the chief planner of the

Sept. 11 attacks; Mamdouh Mahmud Salim, who traveled frequently to Germany to

obtain electronic equipment for Al Qaeda; Wadih El-Hage, Bin Laden's personal

secretary and roving emissary, now serving a life sentence in the U.S. for his

role in the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Tanzania and Kenya; and Fazul
                              Abdullah

Mohammed and Saif Adel, also accused of carrying out the embassy

                              attacks.

Not hardly. This all started long before them, you have to back to before the Russians Invaded Afghanistan. It actually goes back to the days before Bin Laden Became Bin Laden as we know him. It's hard to put a finger on one point in time but I would say that things really started after WWII some time when we started meddling in their affairs. 9/11 was probably 50 years or so in the making. But if you want to start with Bin Laden you need to know what got his so mad at what he saw after going back home after fighting the Russians in Afghanistan.
