Two US service members killed at Afghan camp where Prince Harry is based

An attack on a joint U.S.-British base in Afghanistan, where Prince Harry is based, came after earlier threats from the Taliban. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

New in this version: Prince not involved

Updated at 7:30 p.m. ET: Two U.S. members of the NATO force in Southern Afghanistan were killed and several others were wounded Friday night in a complex attack on the U.S. Marine half of Camp Bastion/Leatherneck — the same camp where Britain's Prince Harry is based — U.S. and NATO officials told NBC News.

NATO officials said that Prince Harry was on the base at the time, but "never in any danger," Reuters reported.

Prince Harry at Camp Bastion/Leatherneck in Afghanistan last weekend. Initial reports were that he wasn't involved in the fighting that killed two U.S. members of the NATO force stationed there.

All of the casualties appeared to be Americans, NATO officials said.

The Leatherneck half of the joint NATO operations center in Helmand Province is home to members of the First Marine Expeditionary Force, which serves as the southwest regional command.

The attack, involving small arms and mortars, was launched against the International Security Assistance Force shortly after midnight local time (3 p.m. ET). Casualty assessments were still under way, but Camp Leatherneck took the brunt of the attack, officials said.

British defense officials told reporters only that they were "aware of an incident" at the base and that "the incident is being dealt with."

The Taliban launched what it called the "Harry Operations" on Monday, threatening to do everything in its power to kill Prince Harry, 27, who is third in line to the British throne, after British forces announced his four-month deployment to Camp Bastion.

Apart from the significance of the prince's being based there, the attack is notable as the worst yet on Camp Bastion/Leatherneck.

In March, a civilian Afghan worker tried to assassinate U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta by driving his car into Panetta's plane as it arrived at the camp. The assailant died from burns; a British serviceman was injured.

Why don't they just put a neon arrow over Prince Harry's head. Why must his location be revealed? There does not need to be this much disclosure. The press is probably chomping at their bits just waiting... They're sick, sick, sick.

I share your feelings. Making Harry's location known is just plain stupid and irresponsible. I blame the press and the sources...

Exactly. Pull him out of there and make sure it gets plenty of news coverage so everyone knows he's gone and the rest of the troops are safe.

I've got a better idea. Why don't we just get the fuk$ out of this s#!t#0le now - this upcoming week, instead of dragging this travesty for another pointless and bloody 2 years. The Afghans are not our friends nor our allies. They don't want us there. Most casualties over the last year were killed by our "friends" the Afghans. What on earth are we still doing there? why are we giving them billions of dollars and waste our lives there? We should put every coalition soldier on a plane THIS WEEK and get the hell out of the middle east and never look back. The grand plan for democracy in the middle east - that anyhow ain't gonna happen in this lifetime.

"after British forces announced his four-month deployment to Camp Bastion" ... the last sentence of the article states that the British had announced his location, which has since been targeted by the Taliban. Unless this is false, the media haven't revealed anything new.

The part that gets me about this all is the people who would be in an uproar IF something bad happened to Prince Harry.

I mean 2 Americans dead...that is ok, but heaven forbid it's someone else.

I value all human life. And not one prince over a private..or visa versa.

To advertise a member of the Royal family, and where they are serving is irresponsible to the 10th degree. It puts the bulls eye on him and everyone else still within the 7 ring.

This is way too personal, they need to get him out of there. In fact we need to get everyone out of there, it is a waste of time, lives, and money. May the two service members who have been killed R.I.P. and my condolences to their families.

I said that just the other day. The press has become way too loose lipped lately. They print and tell everything without taking into consideration the danger they are putting our service people into. I think for the time being it may be best to send Harry home for abit. Srry Harry..you are very brave but it is time to realise that the lives of your fellow service men are at risk here.

As for the press? it seems our press all over the world has become too irresponsible with leaking lately. The WH is full of aids that are too easily swayed into spying and leaking to the press. I thought there was supposed to be discretion in our WH? Time to crack the whip and clean out the little spies. Its especially bad when you got the repubs and dems spying on each other...pitiful state of affairs to try to dig up dirt on our fellow americans just to try to win elections. it makes you all look like a bunch of untrustworthy powrer hungry wolves....but I blame the teabaggers for this mostly. Even under Bush it wasnt ever this bad but the tbaggers with their bigotry, predjudice and paranoia have really made it bad. All because they want to get this president out of office because hes supposedly Not one of us ...face it... they just dont like a black man being the president and thats the real truth.

I agree with you alan lets just pull out and take our gear with us...dont tell the afghans ...just do it and let them ask questions later. The less we tell them the fewer people will get hurt.

For those who don't know, British media and tabloids leaked Harry's location about a week ago. Probably why this attack occurred in the first place. Sorry everyone, can't place the blame on MSNBC this time.

And for all we know, it may be a fake location leaked on purpose /beginsarcasm since Prince Harry's life is so much more important than some lowly U.S. Soldier/endsarcasm. R.I.P the 2 U.S. Servicemen that didn't survive the attack, I consider you just as significant as Prince Harry.

I think, personally, it is time to go Taliban hunting with gunships, A-10's in the mountains around the base and when the Taliban are flushed out of their caves really let them have it. They'd be s--t-ng their pants or whatever they're wearing real quick like.

And as for Obama robo-signing the letters, don't you think GWB did the same thing when he was in office? He had far more casualties coming back from Iraq, than Obama has had.

MUW -- please just go back to banging your cousins and stop trying to understand "big ideas" like reality. Like a good monkey, you are quite adept at aping and repeating what your trainers tell you -- but repetition of a lie does not make it true. Why don't you write to Mitt and tell him to send a few of his sons over there? Goodness knows if he gets the power, he'll be sure to send other people's children into battle. At least the Royal family has a sense of duty and responsibility -- whereas Mitt and his ilk simply want to rape the country for their own gain.

What is more striking, though, is more U.S. soldiers have been killed and wounded during President Barack Obama’s first term in office than former President George W. Bush’s two terms. And the anti-war mainstream media that regularly counted the number of deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan under Bush, for the most part, has been silent on the number of deaths and casualties that have resulted under Obama.

Under former President George W. Bush, 575 American soldiers died and fewer than 3,000 were wounded in Afghanistan. This means under Obama, at least 1,405 soldiers have died and nearly 15,000 additional soldiers have been wounded, which means 70% of the deaths and nearly 80% of the injuries in Afghanistan have occurred under Obama’s watch.

In 2010, Obama sent 33,000 additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan as part of the “surge,” and Americans have been received with more hostility with each passing day. In June, Obama announced he would accelerate the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, and America would transfer security duties to the Afghans in 2014.

Because Obama is a Democrat, the media has been reluctant to shine more of a light on Afghanistan's destabilization under Obama. Perhaps the media is afraid that such reports would make Americans question whether Obama has mismanaged the Afghanistan war like he has the economy. Or maybe the media does not want to report on anything that would make Democrats seem weak on national security, as was the case when Bill Clinton was president.

For whatever reason, the mainstream media is not reporting the striking increase in deaths and casualties in Afghanistan under Obama, again helping Obama through their omissions.

My dad, a WWII veteran of the Pacific Theater battles, always told us as we were growing up: "Loose lips sink ships." How true.

The media should be censored mightily. I know all about freedom of the press, but in wartime, the rules are different. The media's printing everything about everyone is the same as yelling "fire" in a crowded theater with only one exit. It is just plain stupid.

Besides, today's media is out there to "get the scoop." They don't care whether they report factual events or not. Quite a few things get embellished on the way to the printer. The media has caused more deaths, in my opinion, with their careless reporting than anything else.

Harry could have just "made other career choices" like Romney's sons are doing. I guess the Royals believe in doing one's duty for one's country when when is blessed with great wealth. Maybe we have a opening for him in the Texas Air National Guard? Perry and Bush can tell him how to join. Harry's location should have remained a secret but the kid has balls. Here we go once again those that:

      1. Never Served in the US Military, as currently only 1% of US Citizens are serving in the US Military, 92% NEVER Served in the US Military.

      2. How many of you ever Served at Afghanistan.

      3. How many of you have ever been to Camp Bastion - Leatherneck.

Since most of you have Never Served in the US Military, Afghanistan has always been an Asymmetric War NOT a Conventional War that most of the US Public can only comprehend and even are too lazy to research the differences.

Can any of you find Afghanistan on a map. Can you find Camp Bastion - Leatherneck. How big is Camp Bastion - Leatherneck.

      Devils son,

Keep on mumbling about Draft Dodgers, etc., go research YOUR Vice President. President Obama's Character witness former President Clinton. Now go research which Nations still have Mandatory Compulsory Military Service, as to President Obama's Campaign Promise to Force the 92% of US Citizens into the US Military to do their Civic Duty, as his solution to end the continous deployments and long tours of the 1% of US Citizens of the US Military.

      D Buck-2239568,

It is unfortune for the USMC that were killed. However; being a survivor from Operation Cyclone, it has always been a really bad idea to do the identical things like the USSR 40th Army Occupation did and expect a different result. That Base, Camp Bastion - Leatherneck, like most Bases is just that "Static", with everyone on the Base as Fish in a Barrel.

Ed Orr - I think, personally, it is time to go Taliban hunting with gunships, A-10's in the mountains around the base

You are proving that you were never at Afghanistan. And definitely know nothing about Asymmetric Warfare.

Why do you want to repeat what the USSR 40th Army attempted to do to us with their Flying Tank Hind Attack Helicopters, and SU-25 Attack Aircraft. All we did was continually channel them into ambushes. Just something to think about the warhead of a RPG-7 is almost the same as a shoulder launched anti aircraft SA-7 missile; the unfortune reality is that most of the investigators don't know the differences. During President Obama's Libya thing the Islamic Jihadist that were supported by President Obama got 20,000 SA-7s. During Operation Cyclone we found out the hard way, standing in the open to launch the US Stinger Anti Aircraft Missiles that the USSR had already equipped their Aircraft with ECM broadcasting the Friendly signal so that the US Stinger Missiles would not lock on the USSR Aircraft, so we lead the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen on raids to grab USSR SA-7 missiles.

Of course after the US abandoned the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen the 1990s Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban massacred all of our abandoned US Allies, as to why the current US Ally Government of Afghanistan has abandonment issues.

It is not a unknown concept to channel an enemy into an ambush especially Asymmetric Warfare Forces versus Conventional Warfare Forces. We knew for the longest time that the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran's Special Forces, Quds, was training the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban in Asymmetric Warfare, also the Fundamentalist Islamic Muslim Brotherhood, Fundamentalist Islamic Hamas Foreign Fighters, Fundamentalist Islamic Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, most of the Fundamentalist Islamic Al Quada International Franchise, the Fundamentalist Islamic Pakistanis Taliban, etc.. However, we could not say anything because saying anything against the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran was against President Obama's March 2009 Iran Policy, so when General McChrystal was in briefed he announced the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran's increased support of the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban and received a Letter of Reprimand.

I agree with Ray's top first comment. I.E. Britain's Royal family does not need anyone to advertise their location in a battle field and it puts all their fellow soldiers in jeopardy to take advantage of that kind of of press.

The British Royal family has long cultural heritage to serve in the military. You cannot be a male monarch in the UK without that experience. But it serves no one to exploit that in the press and endangers everone involved..

The real story here is that two more Americans were killed in battle, not that Prince Harry shared the camp with these dead heros!

If all would just step back and take a good look, will see this was deliberately done to force the Brits to join the USA in the war against Iran. Netanyahe is getting immpatienced, and we must do what he demands. The CIA put out the location of the Prince to no action, and so they went a bit farther, and don't fool yourself this doesn't happen to stir up more hate and fear. Remember 9/11 and the lies to invade Iraq, anything to blame Muslims. One time or another we have sought revenge against a country that would not bow to our command.9/11 was our Reichstag to blame muslims that have started one war after another to promote hate and fear.

This is a war, and as in all wars the ultimate targets are the leadership and represenitives. Prince Harry is a legit target, and will be in any conflict England has while he's alive. obama is the ultimate target for the USA should those guys get on our soil. We the people are just the pawns in the chess game. Removing Harry from Afganistan wont make our troops any safer as there is still a war going on, and obama is pulling out the majority of our troops in 2014. Yet he's leaving a small force in place untill at least 2024 to help ensure the puppet Gov. survival. So, our troops wont be safe in Afganistan anytime soon. Then we have the Iranian conflict to deal with, and with the termoil in the middle east right now WWlll may be right around the corner!. Military cuts at this point in time is the wrong thing to do.

@david-475776 - Thank you for boiling a complex issue down- so the 92% could understand it (no sarcasm).

This sentence of yours is not true - but should be thought about by the "turn it into glass crowd."

Of course after the US abandoned the 1980s Pro US Afghan Muhajeen the 1990s Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban massacred all of our abandoned US Allies, as to why the current US Ally Government of Afghanistan has abandonment issues.

We didn't care about the Taliban for years, we have abandoned many leaders that the US PUT in place (not so covertly) over the years...let's not forget we trained Osama bin Laden, we put Saddam Hussein; Manuel Noriega (Panama); The Carter admin. was friendly to the Shah of Iran to his face, but didn't back him, leading to the demand (from Iranians) that Ayatollah Khomeini fly back from exile in Paris and lead Iran in endless human rights violations, (FYI - The Shah was very pro-Western); who needs to show that he is NOT a puppet of the US - and therefore the country is being bombed daily by the US and tensions are running very high? - Pakistani Pres. Karzai - he was put in power by the US - that became a dangerous game for him, so he caters to both insurgents, Taliban, etc and now tells the US to shove off, if we hit him with a drone, there will be hell to pay, but Washington doesn't always use it's head (as David pointed out) AND the US Congress' children are safe from being in a war, along with the President's - so it is safe to say that no matter who is in Washington, they tend to mess up a good thing when they have it - and now we have a mess in the M-E - we are there on false facts and promises. I never thought I'd type it but Obama has managed to kill more people (including civilians) than both Bushes... Surely Romney already wants to "nuke" Iran - a pretty unwise move considering there is no way Russia will tolerate the US along it's entire Western Border and I believe China will be pretty pissed too - both countries have literally BILLIONS of people they can soldier up and throw at us (armed).....and the Iranian Army is a force to be reckoned with in it's own right, Iran is NOT a back-water country - it's quite modern. Neither of our two limited choices are up for this....

As for Harry - I doubt he is where he is announced to be, but he chose this as his career - while the war was going on, he's a grown man, let him fight - the last time he was in Iraq it was soldiers who were with him that gave him away and lead to him being sent home...so I assume, he's not at Bastion and if his British NATO buddies can not write home that they are will the Prince - he can serve in peace.

Do you have any idea how hard college deferrments were to get in 1965-66? I do! You just sound like a puss with a big mouth. Maybe you belong in France, or would that be French Canada?

Yes!!! Lets keep Prince Harry there, when they are hell-bent on killing anyone and everyone and he would be their million dollar target. If they actually kill him it will start world war 3. Let hope Iran really isn’t nuke ready. The entire region is so unstable; the Prince needs to go home.

Kim - I think that you just removed any remaining doubt as to why you aren't in a senior State Department position. Maybe you should just go into your backyard, play in the sandbox with your kids and let the grown ups handle foreign policy decisions. It's quite likely that they know much, much, much more about this situation and how to manage it than you do.

Fr those who are not aware of it, this is Harry's second tour in combat. His first was in Iraq where he led combat patrols out side the wire a couple of times a week. He is a member of the Royal Family and since he is down the list (third) it falls to him to show that they also take the same risks as their people. His uncle flew missions during the Falklands War and did pretty good. Compare it to our "royalty" (politicians and the wealthy) who do not serve or risk anything in the wars they start and support. Right Mitt?

@Ray - I'm all for freedom of speech. I'm also all for restraint. Listening to idiots like Kim wax on about WW3, escalation to nuclear war and her particular little recipe for resolving this week's Middle Eastern nonsense is tiresome.

@Dysphoria - Have I really expressed my thoughts with any less thought than the rest of you? In short, foreign policy matters are dynamic, complex, and unlikely to be resolved by Kim from Utah... who should go play with her children and stick to cooking pork chops for her husband. Paternalistic? Certainly. But that's how the real, grownup world works... those of us who actually know what we are doing are, in fact, taking care of the rest of you who simply spout your "Just send Harry home!" nonsense.

@Kim - Your new comments are the most intelligent thing that I've seen you post. Your insight into Harry's affect on women is certainly far more insightful, however simplistic, than your views on foreign policy. Bravo, darling!

now Romney was the correct age to be in the military but he got 4 deferments and then ran to france to hid for 2 years, oh yes that was missionary work, mmmm and I have a bridge to sell you

the five boys were all of the correct age yet daddy sent them all over so they could have the benefits, free enterprise and the peace and comfort of the USA.. at absolutely no cost to them..

now I need one of you republicans to tell me who started the afghanistan war..

war is not a thing this country needs to be involved in but it's right there in front of our faces.. we should do what we can to help get through it.. cookies, letters, positive speech.. and lots more

Well that's not really Harry's fault. The dumbasses couldn't even attack the right side of the base. This is no one's fault but the Taliwacker's.

I thought that too, at first, but the last sentence of the article: "after British forces announced his four-month deployment to Camp Bastion" ... states that the British had announced his location, which has since been targeted by the Taliban. Unless this is false, the media haven't revealed anything new.

Wow. I thought that we were all upset that Obama and R$ never served- now we are upset that another country actually puts their future leaders in combat situations?

These poor soldiers were pawns in the deadly game Barack Obama is playing. This whole Muslim uprising is scripted and calculated to divert attention from the poor state of the economy prior to the November election. As the unrest escalates, we will see Barack and Hillary step in and with their tough talk, restore order. And the gullible American public will be singing Obama's praises so loud, it will drown out any talk of recession...or food stamps...or unemployment...or national debt. If you don't believe it, just wait and watch.

Let's just pull out all our troops from everywhere in the Middle East, close all our embassies, and bring home all Americans. When that's done, we can do fly overs and drop leaflets depicting Mohamed all over the Middle East. The Muslims will all go nuts and kill each other in a frenzy.

Nahh DHLINCALI... Prince Harry was in a "political" flap at home so since he was assigned to that unit, the Royal family "encouraged" him to go to keep him out of trouble... this attack will in no doubt "shorten" his deployment and he will be A: moved further to the rear.. (another, better protected base or B. be "re-assigned state side.

I also think this is a spill over from the embassies attacks... The timing is too convenient.

Vegas has nothing to do with Prince Harry being sent to Afghanistan. He has served on the frontlines in Iraq previously and it has been known for months that he wanted to be redeployed and would be going back soon. William has long stated that he wants to serve, but has been overuled by politicians because he's too close to the throne to be permitted to go. Whoever leaked this in the press is a real jerk. This man, as unwise as he was in Vegas, is just trying to do his job for his country. He's no sherker.

That's because it has NOTHING to do with the anti-islamic movie. They are tired of us occupying their countries...installing dictators to suppress them who are under our control. Then under the same tongue denouncing them as being "ROADBLOCKS TO DEMOCRACY" to destabilize their countries. Wouldn't you be a bit upset as well? Wait a minute....it IS happening to us..it's called Republicans and Democrats installed, bought and paid for by international bankers. People in our country are naive and we are always shocked as to why people hate us. Guess what? it's not a shock. When you constantly step on and bully other people...eventually they fight back. These people in the middle east aren't like people in America. They have nothing to lose and they are not caught up in selfishness, consumerism, Honey-Boo Boo Child and the warm confounds of suburbia. These people are militant and will fight to the death. We need to leave these people alone. Apparently we didn't learn from the Russians...who we conspired against in Afghanistan by paying Bin Laden while forming and arming Al-Quiada to drive the Russians out of Afghanistan. Yep, the same Al-Quada that hates America. The chickens are coming home to roost in America...that is what is happening.

While I certainly agree with much of what you said, let's not forget that these folks aren't exactly victims of the West all the time. Their ruling classes and religious leaders also do a good job of that on their own. Let's not forget what they are fighting to protect besides what you have stated, and it isn't always exactly noble. They are fighting to protect a culture that treats women like animals. Corrupt royal families like the Saudis brainwash their kids in extremist schools to hate America and other non-muslim "infidels" on this planet, all the time while their corrupt and carnal ruling class smile like they are your friends. Oh, and let's not forget about how Iran operates through its various terrorist organizations in the Muslim world and in terror cells throughout the West to whip up religious extremism of such a vile and extreme nature that Iranian leaders openly and unashamedly call for the genocide of the Jews and are developing nuclear weapons as fast as they can in part to wipe out Israel for having the nerve to exist. Ahmadinejad and the main Ayatollah in Iran hold to a doctrine that their mystical Twelfth Imam and his golden age will only be ushered in by a catastrophic and bloody war, so they are helping that process along by destabilizing world peace covertly and through their nuclear program. The last certifiable case that promoted a genocide of the Jewish people was Hitler, and people realized that that kind of thinking was a danger to the free world.

Yes, dirty tricks were certainly played on some of the Muslim countries by the West and we are certainly reaping some of that bitter fruit, but their own Ayatollahs and Mullahs and other theocrats more than hold their own in promoting some pretty dysfunctional concepts that are a threat to world peace. America, Britain, Canada and other nations like us did not do that to them.

So let me ask this. Which would cause more of a chance for WWIII? The killing of Prince Harry or the Pope? The Pope is in Lebanon. NBC so far has not posted anything on him. I hope they both get out alive. We really don't need to see where the Gut Check is for the rest of the World on these wakadoos. NBC is so biased they are sick in addition to being an ineffective News source.

If Prince Harry is killed...WW3 is imminent. They would consider the assassination of a world leader as an act of war.

OhioWire: I believe it is ALREADY an act of war between the Taliban and the USA and Britain. Why would killing of Prince Harry be any different. Are you implying that the gloves would then come off? If so, they should have removed the gloves 10 years ago and been done with it by now.

I would imagine Britain might step up the level of the war if Harry were to be killed but otherwise, he IS only the third in line to the throne and will be displaced downwards if/when William and Catherine have a child. Maybe you're too young to remember when William and Harry were born but they were dubbed "the heir and the spare". Right now he's the spare but that will probably change in the not too distant future. However, I doubt the British people would be too happy even if only a 'spare' were targeted to be killed.

The recent kiilings at these "protests" were an act of war and no body has done anything but talk bu!!sh!t. When is somebody going to do something before its too late?
