My answer is- there is no way you give up free speech rights no matter how murderous these ass-holes are. The embassy compound is US soil and we have a right to defend it. It Sudan does not want us to deploy our Marines to protect our embassy then we should bring all of our people... back home. Your question reminds me of an incident that occurred in Central Park in 1989, known as The Central Park Jogger Case. A woman went jogging late at night, alone, in NYC's Central Park and was viciously assaulted by a gang of thugs.

Why a comparison with this incident? Because the woman HAD EVERY RIGHT to go jogging in Central Park, any time, day or night. We all have the right to live our lives unmolested by acts of criminal violence. Nevertheless, it was foolish of her to ignore the possible--even LIKELY-- consequences of her choice. She put herself squarely in harm's way. I do not blame her in any way for what happened, just so you know, but I also feel she should have protected herself, as we all should.

The film-maker had every legal right to freedom of speech (although that might be tempered if he was on probation for previous criminal offenses), but knowing his motive was not so much about expressing an opinion as it was about hoodwinking, insulting and inciting violence... where, then is his moral high ground?

What are rights for anyway? Aren't our Constitutional rights intended to balance the freedom of the individual with the needs of society? Life isn't always black and white... it's almost always gray.

Mankind needs freedom of speech like we need air, but the film-maker should be condemned in the strongest possible moral terms. That is my opinion.

He launched an air assault into a country that was technically an ally, but probably the shakiest ally we have ever had and didn't give them any warning. Actualy Obama banned waterboarding and according to the former head of the CIA it was waterboarding that got the information about the courrier. As a former combat vet and member of the 82nd airborne I can assure you that the speical forces that were sent in had a better tha 50/ 50 chance. In fact One of the choppers went down and they still completed the mission. That was 100% Seals training and experience that did that.

As a Persian Gulf war veteran I agree that spec ops had much better than a 50/50 chance of success. The 50/50 was if OBL was even there. Obama's plan to have a back up contingency group in the air is what made the down chopper nothing but a speed bump in the operation.

Considering the security OBL had (or lacked) I would say we presented an overwhelming force scenario. More like 95% chance of success.

Ecosystem effects for decades, if not more. It definitely is worse when it is on American soil, at least for Americans who depend on the natural resources that are affected. I am not supporting what is done in the desert of the mid-East, but we have better environmental regulations here in the US to protect things like air quality and water quality for all citizens, not just the rich. Large and small aquifers and surface water supplies can also be poisoned by spills, fracking, coal mining, etc. We need clean water. Of course, shipping oil also results in spills. The best answer is that we need to continue to support clean energy, because we have amazing resources in wind, solar, tidal, and wave power that we could exploit without harming human health and doing less damage to the ecosystems that provide us with clean air and water (e.g., the ocean, river networks, wetlands, forests). But even if we are energy independent, we would probably continue to be involved in mid-eastern affairs due to our alliance with Israel and the fact that a lot of nations have nuclear weapons in the region.
