Subscribe to RSSISMAILIA, Egypt — Islamist militants attacked Egypt's security headquarters in northern Sinai with machineguns and mortar bombs on Sunday and fought troops elsewhere in the desert region, killing one soldier and wounding seven, security officials said.
Troops and police had swept into a village south of Sheikh Zuwaid town, near the border with Israel, at dawn and arrested ten suspected militant leaders. They took them to the security HQ in the region's main town of al-Arish, an army spokesman said.
"In return and out of vengeance, a group of Takfiri (Islamists) began firing indiscriminately at the North Sinai HQ at 8 a.m.," the spokesman said in a televised statement.
The militants climbed on to the roofs of buildings across from the HQ and fired rocket-propelled grenades, a security source said. Machinegun battles were fought in the streets around the building, according to witnesses.

In Sheikh Zuwaid, east of al-Arish, troops with about 30 armored personnel carriers backed by helicopters fought with militants.
One soldier was killed and seven soldiers suffered gun wounds in the fighting around Sheikh Zuwaid, the army spokesman said, and a woman and child were wounded in crossfire.
Egyptian forces last month began their biggest security crackdown in decades in Sinai after militants killed 16 border guards on August 5 in the deadliest attack there since Egypt's 1973 war with Israel.

The government sent in hundreds of troops backed by tanks, armored vehicles and helicopters in a joint operation with police to raid militant hideouts, arrest suspects and seize weapons.
Disorder has spread in Sinai since former President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in a popular uprising last year, with Islamist militants stepping up attacks on security forces and the Israeli border. Egypt's new president, Mohamed Mursi, has vowed to restore order.
But efforts to impose central authority in the lawless desert region are complicated by the indigenous Bedouin population's ingrained hostility to the government in Cairo.

I just checked the US state department- Their official statement was, "There is nothing to see there. The US has no official position, it's a local issue. They aren't real, but they aren't imaginary. He stated that Tehran believed Obama's election would demoralize the US Armed Forces by casting doubt on their victories in Iraq and Afghanistan, if not actually transforming them into defeats. Why did Obama ignore the Iranian protesters? Why did Obama encourage the Egyptian protesters? Why did Obama bomb the crap out of Libya, forgoing congressional approval to do so? His actions allowed all the tens of thousands of weapons stockpiles to fall into the hands of the radicals who a few months prior had been killing Americans in Iraq while destabilizing yet another country so that radical Islamists could gain strongholds there.

Yes, we may be decades away. But we will always be decades away until we start. If we generated the majority of our electricity using natural gas (which we have plenty of) and work on developing those alternative sources we could be off crude oil imports. Jet fuel, medicines, things that require crude oil could be made from our own resources while we look for alternatives. Cars can run quite well on natural gas.
Unless we actually look forward we will never get to the future. I don't care what anybody thinks about Carter. Had we listened to him all those years ago we wouldn't need the mideast oil by now. Those 'decades away' would be a thing of the past.

If you actually knew anything about Egypt, you would know that the Sinai is inhabited by Bedouin who never liked the central government and have always run their own rackets. They're heavily armed, and not especially nice people, but they had plenty of disputes with Mubarak too. He wants one central government and to eliminate any power on the state and local levels, and I have seen posts where he says he wants Democrats to be the only ones in power.
What he is describing is what China was 30 years ago. Even they abandoned much of that, and China is more powerful than ever. What he seems to want is what China was when 99% of their population did not even have a car, and worked for pennies a day.
