Author Salman Rushdie lived in hiding for a decade in the wake of a fatwa issued in 1989 over his novel "The Satanic Verses." His Japanese translator was stabbed to death in 1991 and his Italian translator was injured in a stabbing that same year.
DUBAI -- An Iranian religious foundation has increased its reward for the killing of British author Salman Rushdie, in response to a U.S.-made film that mocks the Prophet Muhammad, sparking protests across the Muslim world.
Rushdie, an Indian-born British novelist who has nothing to do with the film, was condemned to death in 1989 by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Iran's late leader, over his novel "The Satanic Verses," saying its depiction of the Prophet Muhammad was blasphemous.
Khomeini's fatwa - or religious edict - was condemned in the West as incitement to murder and an assault on freedom of speech, but a wealthy Iranian religious organization has offered a large reward to anyone carrying it out and decided to increase the bounty amid the furor over the online film.
"I am adding another $500,000 to the reward for killing Salman Rushdie, and anyone who carries out this sentence will receive the whole amount immediately," said Hassan Sanei, the foundation's head, in a statement carried by the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA).
Unrest continued across the Islamic world as demonstrators in Pakistan broke through a barrier near the U.S. consulate in Karachi and protesters in Turkey burned a U.S. flag. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.
The reward offered by the state-linked foundation now stands at $3.3 million, ISNA reported.
"Surely if the sentence of the Imam (Khomeini) had been carried out, the later insults in the form of caricatures, articles and the making of movies would not have occurred," said Sanei, who is also the foundation's representative to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Khomeini's successor as Iran's supreme leader.

After being published in 1988, deadly riots against "The Satanic Verses" erupted in Islamabad, Pakistan, and Mumbai, India. The book was banned in South Africa, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and several other countries.
The fatwa resulted in the writer living in hiding for a decade. Although Rushdie was never physically harmed, his Japanese translator was stabbed to death in 1991 and his Italian translator was injured in a stabbing that same year.
'Idiotic' film
Speaking on British radio before the news of the increased bounty, Rushdie called the film "idiotic ... a piece of garbage" but he also condemned violent protests against it as "an ugly reaction that needs to be named as such".
The U.S. ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, and three other Americans were killed in Benghazi, Libya, on Tuesday and several other people have died in protests around the Muslim world against the amateurish video, "Innocence of Muslims".

Iranian officials have demanded the U.S. apologies for the video and say it is only the latest in a series of Western insults against the holy figures of Islam.
In 1998, under reformist President Mohammad Khatami, Iran's government distanced itself from the Rushdie fatwa, but hardline groups regularly renew the call for Rushdie's death, saying Khomeini's decree is irrevocable and eternal.

If we would have to face this in the USA, then YOU need to think about that, and what brought us to this situation, namely your politics of relativism and multiculturalism. Go ahead and google up "Anti-American Savages of the Post-American World." That article describes your enabling stance to a tee. This is why I don't believe those who advocate isolationism, saying "heck, all we Americans would fight together to defend our homeland if we had to." Obviously, many will only think about how to appease aggressors.

Salmon Rushdie calls the movie "idiotic"? What erudite arrogance.
I watched the movie, since the actions of Muslims made it part of the historic record. The scenes are researched from the Hadith although presented in a stilted way. Did Mohammad marry Safiyah for mutual love? or did he rape her the same day after beheading the men in her tribe, enslaving the women and children, killing her father, and torturing then killing her husband Kinnana. At least the movie gave her a voice, (albeit a campy one). I would say she was in shock and fear rather than in love.
I find the "Innocence of Muslims" movie makers far more courageous than Rushdie or the far left lackeys in Hollywood or the BBC who are scared stiff to tackle the subject.
Perhaps they share the same badge of honor with Rushdie. It seems in the west that you are doing something right when you are issued a death sentence by the uber-religious clerics of Islam.
Let's stop insulting the movie makers and start insulting the killers who would silence the right of free expression for the vanity of their prophet.

The Iranian government should condemn any organization within its borders that would place a bounty on a person's head. That would put an immediate halt on this type of misinformation.

I wouldn't go so far as that JP's1, I mean, if they both think it all boils down to One God then they must be talking about the same God. The only way that could be is if God set it up this way on purpose. I have my own beliefs about God, and I'm really, really, glad to live in a country where I'm entitled to them - where each and every individual is recognized as being absolutely entitled (let's face it, who is going to talk you or anybody out of what you really think?) to their own view on the subject. We can take our thoughts and put them into words in writing, art, film, or most any non-violent personal expression. We can even say there is no God if that's what we are thinking. No problem, as long as I'm not invasively forced to listen to, read, look at, what is being done then there is no assault on my "feelings" which I did not invite.
Hi Charles the Hh, I haven't looked at it, but I'll still insult the makers as being very strange in their thinking. They achieve showing everybody that they want to do, can do, and are happy doing, what very few others would take any satisfaction from doing or viewing. However, I'm with you 100% when you note that anybody who wants to take such a basic individual liberty away is suppressive beyond our tolerance or acceptance - and any who kill and destroy because their feeling are hurt are the ones to blame for any killing and destruction. There is no way such a thought being expressed can be said to be criminal here (except in case of child porn somewhere in the full version), or if we are all part of a deliberate Creation by, of, and for One God - none that I can see.

You say the foundation does not represent Iran, but one of the foundations primary mission is to maintain Khomeini's legacy and see that his wishes are carried out. And Komeini's replacement as Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei publicly supports Komeini's fatwa to kill Salman Rusdie. And Sanei, the guy that heads the foundation is Ayatollah Khamenei's personal representative on the foundation's board. He appointed him to the foundation's board. So, are you saying Iran's supreme leader does not represent Iran?

Hi to Mike Norman3: It sure looks like they intend to 'double-down' on their "right" to set speech boundaries on all people of the world... addition's to George Carlin's list of words you can't say on TV (and we'll cut your head off if you do!). I don't even think mutually respected isolation would satisfy such zealots, and in this pursuit many people may return to God (maybe the whole planet) and again become part of the One who is always right. As soon as you have Two then there is right and wrong, and difference of opinion by design - especially if one is male and one is female (rim-shot, splash cymbal please)! Rushdie actuallly writes prettty welll - not an amateur like the guy who threw together the Muhammmad video. I didn't read Verses but I read his book set around the founding of Pakistan. I think it was callled Midnight's CHildren - referencing the fact that Pakistan started to exist at midnight on a certain day. I hope they are not successsful in killling him. As far at the Presient is concerned - I think he deserves a lot of credit for keeeping hios poweder dry in the midddle of an election rather than doing something to please the dodos in the chap seats. Perhaps the West should embark on a campaign to depict Muhammad in an offensive light in every way conceivable: books, pictures, films, comics, articles, posters, etc. A neverending onslaught of anti-Muhammad stuff. Then maybe the fanatics would gradually become desensitized and tire of killing each other in violent protests. State-linked being the prime words in this article describing the reward - that makes it a reward offered by the government. Khomeini ordered this killing and he is the overall ruler of Iran.
Iran is showing further proof it is an irresponsible government in the world community, and should be further isolated by the more responsible world community.

If some muslim were to make a movie or write a book ridiculing Buddha or Christ he would be treated as a hero and worshiped.
We should kiss the muslims asses, just as we are doing, it is the right thing to do. After we have so many in our country and they absolutely profess to be for piece and kindness. I know that they would never send money to help the cause back in the home countries like some have been found to do. After the Quran states it is ok to decieve the infadel in order to gain their trust before chopping their heads off. Howdy AG99: It would almost certainly be among the first things to happen if we ever honestly "declared war" (as in officially, WWll style). Not over religious phraseology, but we'd do it in a deliberately mean "In your face" attutude. Never seems to occur to people that the reasons why we haven't actually launched such a bombardment must be an odd blend of common sense, common decency, and disinterest (all three of which are lost in war).
Sure there are skeletons in every religions closet and people do dumb things.. The point being made is that Islam has had a continuous track record of murder, intimidation and all around non religious behavior.. No government can absolutely quell the voices of all hate groups within their border. But never in my lifetime has the U.S. issued a bounty on somebody's head for a purely literary crime, or allowed any private agency or person to do so.

Well, roy, no, I would not call a few nuts blowing up buildings the equivalent to some of the religion-fueled killing going on in some Muslim counties.
But I would cite the ethnic slaughter of Tutsi tribesmen by their Hutu contrymen in Rwanda during the 90s and equivalent act. I would also cite the attempted "ethnic cleansing" of Bosnia during the same decade, and killing of over 1 million Camboidans by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s. There are others, you've heard of these occurrences too, I am sure. You just choose to regard them differently.
But all are examples of one group of people targeting another for expulsion or death based upon their looking , thinking or believing differently.
Religion, be Islam, Christianity or Judaisim is just one such banner. Political ideology is another, as is ethnic identity.

Blah Blah Blah...It is not religion, It is man, Even before religion men killed other men, It is how power and wealth are gained, These Imams use religion to control the masses thus increasing the Imams power and yes the same can be said of any religion, It can be said of any organized group that pits man against each other, If you don't think so then just take a look at any of the articles on politics and the upcoming election with the Dems versus Republicans or the Libs versus the Cons, Or look at the articles on religion with the atheist versus the believers.
The common denominator is man, Having said that I do believe that these Imams and those who follow them have no tolerance for any other religion or faith and they seek to make Islam the religion of the world, They have started by peaceful immigration first and then when they have enough control of a country thru population they use force to eliminate all other religions.
It's not men (and/or women), it's an aspect of us. Along with the ignorance, hatreds and pursuits of power and wealth are other aspects of humanity which are enlightened, generous, compassionate and cooperative. Which aspects we pursue is a choice. Evil is a product of fear and fear is a result of ignorance. There is no greater evil than willful ignorance.
I would tend to think that it is more arrogance than ignorance, But either way it is still man/woman, It has been with us since the first man fought his neighbor over a cave or piece of meat or over his mate or piece of property, I have met many ignorant people who were kind gentle and compassionate, Many who would give you the food off their table and the shirt off their back , Ignorance can be cured with education but arrogance can not.
WOW.... another bright, shining example of the peaceful religion that is Islam. I agree with the posters who say that we should bomb the middle east, or at least the countries who enable these extremists. I never hear any follow up stories about the extremists being arrested, makes you wonder if the countries even bother trying to punish them. And here is my thought on the Muslim world being portrayed negatively by the media... if they can run out in the streets holding candlelight vigils for a @!$%#ing cartoon of their precious Mohommad being insulted because it insults their religion, then WHY don't they do the same when extremists, using that same religion, go out and kill? It would speak volumes if they actually spoke out against these people at those times instead of when it suits them, like when their egos are bruised. Every religion in the world gets mocked, yet those religions don't have psychopaths running out committing murder, calling out for jihad.

Lost in TPB is correct. Man is the common factor in all faiths. However if everyone did as they preached and did as they read. Everyone would be a peace loving neighbor, except, one!!! Muslims, they teach hate, evil and murder.
You guys don't believe in anything accept in yourself and you have accepted that as your truth. But you ignorance is obvious. There are far more believers than non believers, and there is way more proof that God exist than he doesn't. Those who believe nothing more is needed, those who do not no proof will suffice.
And one last thing, do not place christianity in the same mix as that of muslims. We teach and should strive to practice, loving they neighbor and forgiving our neighbor. Sometimes this is hard but it is done on a daily basis.

Their whole philosophy is convert or be killed. This is very different from Christianity. "For God so loved the world (everyone), that He gave His only begotten son." It just boggles my mind that people can be so petty as to take any insult as justification to take a person's life on that level of its society and moral structure. And yet this is practiced in many muslim countries. Rule by fear and terror.
