State Department: No secret plan to invade Canada

The U.S. and Mexico are not secretly planning to invade Canada, a State Department spokeswoman confirmed to laughter during a daily press briefing.

Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland was taking questions from journalists about its activities Tuesday, which included a meeting between Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Mexico Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa.

She was asked about “a signing ceremony” with Espinosa – what was being signed and why was the ceremony not open to the press.

“I think it’s an update on Merida, but I will get that for you,” Nuland reported, referring to the Merida Initiative to fight organized crime.

The journalist asked, “This isn’t some secret thing … to invade Canada or something like that?”

Amid laughter, Nuland replied: “No, no, no. It’s not anything classified.”

The U.S. did draw up a secret plan to invade Canada in 1935, codenamed “War Plan Red,” some of which was accidentally published by mistake and reported by The New York Times.

A U.S. invasion of Canada also featured in the film, "Canadian Bacon," starring John Candy, Alan Alda and Rhea Perlman, and the movie South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, which included the song "Blame Canada."

There is also a website called www.invadecanada.us, which lists reasons such as connecting the mainland U.S. with Alaska, “they’re just a little too proud,” and “they stole our basketball teams.”

We should not invade Canada. We should adopt Canada- and Mexico. United Provinces of America- UP America! After all, the historical trend is for larger and larger political units- we could lead the way.

But then how will we justify our swollen defense spending?

Come on now, we're just winding down our last batch of wars! What're our soldiers going to do in the meantime?

According to a poll released on Wednesday by Quinnipiac University, CBS News and the New York Times, Romney still has not overtaken Obama among the likely voters in the battleground states of Colorado, Virginia and Wisconsin. While Virginians are split on whether they're better off than they were four years ago, voters in the other states say they're worse off.

      What gives?

Two words: "Likability" and "relatability"—areas, according to the data, in which Romney continues to struggle.

In those three states, Romney's favorability rating among likely voters hovers around 45 percent. Obama's numbers are slightly better, with favorability ratings of 49 percent in Colorado, 53 percent in Virginia and 52 percent in Wisconsin. (Meanwhile, former President Bill Clinton's favorability rating in all three states remains above 60 percent, which may explain why Obama has been running ads online showing him with Clinton and not Vice President Joe Biden, who's favorability tops out at 42 percent in those states, according to the poll.)

Perhaps even more telling is the poll's question about whether likely voters think Obama or Romney care more "about the needs and problems of people like you." In all three states, Obama leads by at least 10 percentage points. In Wisconsin, he has a 17 percentage-point edge on that question over Romney.

"Most times if voters think things haven't gone well, they say, 'Let's think of somebody else.' But at this point they're not saying that," Brown said. "Clearly they think [Obama] is more in tune with their lives."

The United States is jealous of Canada, because Canada is a better country than America is. We hardly hear of anything bad about Canada. Sure there are crooks and bad people in Canada also, but Canada is a better run country than America and we think, that's because there are way too many crooked Politicians in America.

Better Image and Lead on Most Issues

              Democrats Narrow Engagement Gap

Sept. 19, 2012 - Barack Obama holds an eight-point lead over Mitt Romney among likely voters, a bigger September margin than the last three candidates who went on to win in November, including Obama four years ago. In elections since 1988, only Bill Clinton, in 1992 and 1996, entered the fall with a larger advantage.

Middle East Turmoil Closely Followed; Romney's Comments Viewed Negatively

                Overview

About four-in-ten Americans (43%) have followed news about the attacks on U.S. embassies in the Middle East and the killing of an American ambassador very closely, making it by far the most closely followed foreign news story of the year.

Those who have followed this story have much more positive opinions about Barack Obama’s handling of the situation than Mitt Romney’s comments on the crisis. Nearly half (45%) approve of Obama’s handling of the recent attacks on U.S. embassies and the killing of the U.S. ambassador in Libya; 36% disapprove of Obama’s handling of this situation.

In contrast, only about a quarter (26%) of those who have tracked news on turmoil in the Middle East approve of Romney’s comments on the situation; nearly half (48%) disapprove.

...From the end of the War of 1812 until almost the eve of WWII, Canda (usually Britain) and the U.S. had plans to invade each other. The last was in 1940, but that was only if the Germans landed in Canada... then the U.S. would automatically send troops...

...There *were* a couple of armed incursions from the U.S. into Canada after the Civil War... Irish Fenians (mostly Irish-American Civil War vets) trying to get Britain to pull troops out of Ireland... Chased back across the border both times...

...Very good book on this called "THE DEFENCE OF THE UNDEFENDED BORDER..."

Nothing new, at the war college they write up war orders on all countries. It even goes down to the state and county level depending on at what level it is being written. It's there and updated on a regular basis.

Their has been no word as to whether Ann Romney will be given time to address You People.

America's two greatest economic disasters, the Great Depression and the Great Recession, were caused by supposedly successful business man (Hoover and Bush.)

So far I have seen nothing to suggest that another "successful" business man, especially one that made his fortune putting people out of work, would not do the same.

canada has been undergoing a concerted invasion for 40 years, from china thailand and korea. maybe they won't notice our invasion if we stretch it out like that. we'll start with a special-ops recon force recruited in san fransisco. our key elements will be gay couples who wish to get married in canada, where it's legal in every province and territory. the army could offer volunteers spousal benefits for succesful interdiction. plus a pay bonus for capturing caroline rhea

A new poll Thursday showing that President Barack Obama leads Mitt Romney in three key battleground states, topping off a week of bad-news polling for the Republican presidential nominee in toss-up states.

The poll, which covered Ohio, Virginia and Florida, shows Obama leading the former governor by seven points in both Ohio (49 to 42 percent) and Virginia (50 to 43 percent). In Florida, Obama leads by five points (49 to 44 percent), which is within the poll's margin of error. Obama won all three states in 2008, marking the first time Virginia voted for a Democratic president since 1964.

In Michigan and Wisconsin, Obama has also opened up a lead against his rival: A CNN poll puts him up eight points in Michigan (52 to 44 percent), and one from Marquette Law School has Obama leading Romney by 14 points in Wisconsin (54 to 40 percent). In August, Obama led Romney in Wisconsin by only three points.
