What the people of Egypt are going through is the process of moving toward a society where self-determination and self-actualization and individual freedom are allowed and respected to manifest themselves - without fear of one being killed for standing up and being counted as a reasoning, thinking individual - rather than having to falsely play lip service, for the sake of survival, to a one note party or religious line.

When such concepts as democracy and individuality are introduced into a society where they have heretofore been nearly if not totally absent only a total fool would think that the process is not going to be messy and often even violent. The forces who liked things the way they were and are losing their grip on power always fight tooth and nail to hold on to it - like rats who have been cornered and about to be exterminated.

This is also why Religion and Politics should NEVER be mixed. The religious leaders should be focused on their people's spiritual wellfare, not their societal or economic welfare. Shawn--you nailed it on the easily led. Why is it, when was it, that people stopped thinking for themselves? I realize it's very easy to take orders, but how far does that reach? Does taking the orders from someone somehow relieve responsibility for one's actions? I know there was a study after WWII about the Germans just taking orders and doing what they were told to do. "I was just following orders" was the mantra. It was the late 1930s, so I know it was pre-mass media era (relatively).

I'm wondering if it is the nature of humans to blindly follow without questioning? I recall that some of the crusades were of this persuasion as well.

Perhaps the things we should be teaching our children is think for themselves; make decisions; and accept responsibility for those decisions. We might also teach them the value of things, such as their lives; the lives of their loved ones; their possessions, homes, country, etc. Although these things are merely transient belongings, they do have intrinsic importance.

I don't know if these are the answers, but maybe it's a starting place. We can only go so far with our own, but I would hope that others might embrace this viewpoint as well. Until we start somewhere, we will continue to suffer from the fallout of corrupt leadership and blatant ignorance.

The difference today is that we have the most powerful weapons in the world. We can take on the entire world if necessary, simply by force of our nuclear weapons, and not even have to involve our army.

First, Jesus said that all the law and the prophets can be summed up in these 2 things--love God with all your heart, strength, spirit, soul, mind; and love your neighbor as yourself (your neighbor being anyone in need of God's love--which are all the people in the world). It's about a lot of things, the likes of which we'll nor the Muslims themselves, will perhaps never fully understand. On a more fundimental level, we are seeing a clash of cultures because of a recent expondential increase of the level of communication; videophones, internet et cetera, combined with the huge rise in population over the past 40 years in Middle Eastern nations which were mostly at one time sparsely inhabitated. Thanks to Western aid through sharing with the Muslim world our advanced techniques in: medicine, nutrition, sanitation, water management, soil science, et cetera, along with a windfall of revenues from oil, and the industrial world's dependency on oil, we have helped spawn a higly populated dangerous geographic region, because it is still living in the 15th century ideologically, at best.

As it is now, and for the forseeable future, any significantly larger encroachment of a Muslim people into a Western Nation will be toxic.

Like you, I was curious about the "Satanic Verses" by rushdie and I have to say, these idiots need to develop a sense of humor. To me it reads like a fairy tale or some dream inspired from recreational drugs.

Since force and the threat of death is the foundation of their religion, that is the only way we will be able to convince them to change. It sounds brutal, but brutality is the way of Allah. Read the passages of the Koran, and you might be able to understand. When it speaks of perpetrating great bloodshed and killing over an enemy, and then say that Allah is merciful in the same verse, what is wrong with that? Nothing if you are Muslim, it makes perfect sense, since the blessings of Allah is not in this life, but in Heaven. To a westerner though, death is death, and mercy killing is not one of our principles to live by. Trying to mix the valuse of Islam with western values is like trying to mix oil and water.

No, the churches do not pay taxes. When our forefathers gave them the privilege of tax-free status, most all of the churches were poor themselves, yet they did acts of mercy, helping the poor. Today, you see great structures with big screens. The problem I have with churches is when they ask their parishioners to vote a certain way. Then they are stealing your vote through the power of not just pursuasion, but thru guilt and fear.I have witnessed it and when I did, I realized that power-grab was by a church with political leanings and flexing its manipulative muscle.
