Updated at 1:10 p.m. ET: ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- Protests by tens of thousands of Pakistanis infuriated by an anti-Islam film descended into deadly violence on Friday, with police firing tear gas and live ammunition in an attempt to subdue rioters who hurled rocks and set fire to buildings in some cities.
NBC News reported that 12 people died in Karachi with another three dead in Peshawar during the protests. More than 100 people were injured.
Friday had been declared a national holiday by Pakistan's government so people could rally against the video.
There were also protests in at least half a dozen other countries, with American flags and effigies of President Barack Obama burned.
Mohammad Amir, a driver for a Pakistani television station, was the first to die in Pakistan.
He was killed when bullets hit his vehicle in the northwest city of Peshawar, said Kashif Mahmood, a reporter for ARY TV who was also sitting in the car at the time.
The TV channel showed footage of Amir at the hospital as doctors tried to save him. It also showed the windshield of the vehicle, shattered by several gunshots. Police could not immediately be reached for comment about the death of Amir.
In Karachi, armed protesters among a group of 15,000 fired on police, killing one and wounding another, police officer Ahmad Hassan said. The crowd also burned two cinemas and a bank, he said.
The film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad has sparked unrest in many parts of the Muslim world over the past 10 days. A United Nations official said prior to Friday's deaths that about 30 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, had been killed in the violence.
Much of the anger has been directed at the U.S. government even though the film was privately produced in the U.S. and American officials have criticized it for insulting Muslims.

Western diplomatic missions throughout the Muslim world tightened security, with some closing down on expectation of big protests after Friday prayers. Cartoons mocking the Prophet Muhammad published in a French magazine on Wednesday were expected to compound the anger.
French officials have ordered extra security around the country and at its embassies around the world after a satirical magazine published cartoons ridiculing the Prophet Muhammad. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports from Paris.
Pakistan's government had encouraged people to protest peacefully Friday, which it described as the "Day of Love for the Prophet Muhammad."
"An attack upon the Holy Prophet is an attack on the whole 1.5 billion Muslims. Therefore, this is something unacceptable," Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said in a speech to politicians and religious leaders.
Akbar Saeed Farooqi, spokesman for a religious organization that helped organize demonstrations, said, "our heart is crying bloody tears. We can bear everything but disrespect to our Prophet and Quran," he added.
Crowds of angry protesters showed up in Kabul, Afghanistan and Jakarta, Indonesia. The violent uprising followed a deadly weekend marking the deaths of eight International Security Assistance Force members. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.
Several hundred protesters ransacked the two cinemas in Peshawar and set them ablaze. A similar number of protesters also torched a toll booth on the outskirts of the capital, Islamabad. Police fired tear gas at the angry crowds in both cities.
Analysis: 'Manufactured outrage' behind Muslim protests
On Thursday in Islamabad, about 1,000 stone-throwing protesters had clashed with police as they tried to force their way to the U.S. Embassy.
At the consulate where four Americans died security consisted of one U.S. regional security officer and a local militia. Ambassador Chris Stevens often had little personal security detail. NBC's Lisa Myers reports.
The U.S. Embassy in Pakistan has been running television advertisements, one featuring Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, saying the government had nothing to do with the film.
Protests in the Muslim world
Protests went off peacefully in the Arab world, where last week several embassies were attacked and the U.S. envoy to Libya was killed in an initial burst of unrest over the film.
A few dozen Egyptians protested near the French embassy in Cairo, but were kept away from the premises by police deployed in large numbers to avoid a repeat of violence at the U.S. embassy last week.
In Indonesia, which has the world's biggest Muslim population, the U.S. and French embassies were closed in Jakarta Friday.
Lebanon's Hezbollah-run al-Manar television showed thousands of people waving Lebanese and yellow Hezbollah flags as they marched past the Roman ruins of Baalbek and shouted slogans such as "Death to America, death to those who insult the Prophet".
Diplomatic missions in the Afghan capital, Kabul, were on lockdown.
Police in Kabul said they had been in contact with religious and community leaders to try to prevent violence.
"There are some angry demonstrators who will encourage people to violence," senior police officer Mohammad Zahir told Reuters. "There will also be Taliban influence in demonstrations too and they may attack the U.S. and other embassies."
Protests in Kabul and the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif only attracted a few hundred people and no violence was reported, but a cleric told one crowd: "If you kill Americans, it's legal and allowable."

The cartoons in France's Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly have provoked relatively little street anger, although about 100 Iranians demonstrated outside the French Embassy in Tehran.

In Yemen, Western embassies in the capital Sanaa tightened security, fearing the cartoons could lead to more unrest after crowds attacked the U.S. mission there last week over the anti-Islam film.
In Tunisia, the birthplace of the Arab Spring revolts, the Islamist-led government decreed a ban on protests planned on Friday against the cartoons.
An Islamist activist called for attacks in France to avenge the perceived insult to Islam by the "slaves of the cross."
In a statement before her meeting with Tunisian Foreign Minister Rafik Abdessalem, Clinton said she and the president are continuing to monitor events around the world closely in the wake of the attacks and protests on American diplomatic posts.
"We've taken a number of steps around the world to augment security and to protect our personnel at diplomatic posts," Clinton said. In Tunisia, where the embassy and an American school were damaged, Clinton said the government is helping secure the locations and she stressed the importance of bringing those responsible for the assault to justice.

Around 30,000 Libyans marched through the eastern city of Benghazi on Friday in an unprecedented protest to demand the disbanding of powerful militias in the wake of last week's attack.

How long will our President stand by and not do anything? Here we have the government declaring a day set aside to protest this film which has been out for months. Why is he not asking the government to help put an end to this unnecessary violence and those being targeted? For those who say,""Our heart is crying bloody tears. All this movie did was bring out the true nature of islam. Mohammad himself was a violent blood thirsty person.
Our government did nothing to provoke this anger and the article clearly stated the U.S. is running ads in Pakistan to distance itself from this kook. What do you want, us to start a nuclear war with Pakistan? They have nukes too.

The maker was aware of the fact that this movie will definitely hurt the feelings of muslims. Secondly muslims are always the target not christians. The President has diplomatic ways of dealing with this. There is foreign aid, access to our schools, universities, hospitals, visas for work, travel, and students, military training, etc. We can put diplomatic pressure on them to get them to control their people, but we're not. Its pathetic.

Obama can't do anything. He can't have the film makers arrested. They have done nothing legally wrong. If he stands up and apologizes to the Arab world for the film it would ruin his election hopes.
While I am no fan of the man, he's not stupid. To take the side of the Islamist protesters will cost him the election. The governements of those countries are supporting the protests for the most part, and are only keeping down the violence against each other. Not against Americans

The Egyptian government is the only one I am aware of which has done this ( and maybe the Iranian government as well) If you did mean Obama, what would you have him do? In the United States, people have a constitutional right to express their views even when their views are seen by the vast majority as wrong. What you see in the news here ( regardless of what the upcoming comments are going to say :) is being perpetrated by Muslim extremists.
I personally do not subscribe to any religion but if I were a Muslim, I would take the attitude that while not liking what the film had to say, this film would not be able to harm my faith. What does harm Islam are those who would do violence in its name. And the same goes for any religion. Because, here in America, unless its Judaism, Christianity (or Buddhism) you only hear bad things about religion in the news.
This film has already had so much more publicity than if ever deserved.
Whenever I think of what Muslims are like, I think of the incident with some moderate Muslims in Afghanistan who married off their 12 year old daughter so some man. The girl tried to run away from her new "husband" and he and some others tracked her down and cut off her face leaving her to die in the desert. But she didn't die. She crawled to the home of one of her family, and this "loving" family member, slammed the door in her face (what was left of her face at least) and left her on his doorstep to die. She didn't die. Instead she crawled to the last hope left for her, to the US military base where she was taken in and given medical attention and then flown to the USA to receive more treatment. So, this is the way and the "love" of the Muslims!
Does Pakistan realize how close they came to a nuclear exchange with India back in 2001? Who do you suppose helped fend off the riff with India? Remember Pakistan continued incursions into disputed territory and then the attack on the Indian Parliament? India was poised to make a parking lot out of Pakistan and the US along with other world leaders helped to calm the dispute.
Lesson learned! If you are in the woods and you are being chased by a pack of wild dogs, do you continue to run? Or, do you turn and put them down? If you continue to run, who will tire first? We should have let it be. The world has forgotten how dangerous the Nuclear Bomb is and continue to turn a blind eye as we see with Iran. The weaponry of today is so many times more powerful and it may take an event that would likely originate out of the Mid-East or northern Africa for the world to know.
Now the US president is supposed to do something about crime in another country? LOL. Some of you need to find anything to criticize. Get a life.

Your position is untenable. No religion is above reproach, no prophet is above reproach. There is no statute of limitation for murder, even after death. If somebody wants to put Muhammed on trial then it is their right. If Muhammad is the peaceful flower child that Islamicist propagandists promote, then there is nothing to worry about.
The freedom laws of expression are not qualified to protect the vanity of your prophet or religion. And to dispatch critics by acts of terror only confirms the criticisms. Islam is incapable of introspection and behaves more like a rabid animal than a religion.
The Middle East, the largest group of unemployed, uneducated people, with no hope of any kind of a future.

I find it unacceptable that our president isn't coming out stronger against these uncivilized animals. They will never change. We need to pull all our troops out and no more foreign aide, which we are borrowing from China by the way. We have had more terrorist attacks against America under Obama's watch. This tells me something. He sympathizes with these animals because it fits right in with his own religious beliefs. He is a Muslim because I think with his attacks against Catholics and Christians lately proves he is not a member of either of those religions. before calling any religion a cult, I will point out that catholics and protestants were killing each other in ireland for years. church of christ and baptists in america cannot get along. There is no religion without its fanatics. Over there the fanatics have gotten to be in charge. Well guess what. If they believe hard enough, just like a christian they get to go to heaven. If they die for their beliefs they get to go to heaven. Sounds like a christian to me. The difference is the name of the man that taught them their belief. The obama admin. admitted yesterday that the American deaths in Lybia were the result of a preplaned terrorist attack, and when obama was questioned on it in Florida he couldn't admitt his failure, and he went on to blame the movie yet again. What is/isn't news is the fact that NBC wont post the fact that obama's national security admitted that it was a terrorist attack before congress yesterday, and instead of reporting FACTS as any REAL news agency would they keep posting deflective BS. I started reading it and within a chapter or two I was standing up cheering because a country decided they'd had just about enough and took it upon themselves to rid us of these radical muslims animals. For those who want to drag President Obama into this - at the time Bush invaded Iraq, there were 30 other countries with dictators who were as bad or worse than Saddam - why didn't Bush try and free them too....no oil in those other countries.

I don’t know what religion obama is, if any, but in truth it really doesn’t matter. I’m no fan of obama’s but there really isn’t anything he can do in this situation EXCEPT to protect the US borders and our citizens who are in embassies across the globe. I don’t agree with his buying advertising in these countries because I don’t believe it will help. The extremists there have whipped the crowds into such a frenzy that they aren’t going to listen to anything anyone has to say. It also speaks very loudly of a weak society that’s trying to placate and that definitely isn’t going to help. These particular Islamists only respect power and I get the impression that the only thing they know is violence. And no, I’m not advocating war – just explaining why I believe the ads won’t work. Besides, the US’ military resources are spread so thin and our economy is in such bad shape that we would most likely lose any fight we were to pick and that is particularly true when it involves a civilization that has spent its entire history going to war and fighting to the basest levels.

With respect, I must point out you shouldn't listen to USA news over Ireland's conflict. NOT about religion AT ALL. All about political power. The British (invaders) are protestant. The Irish (freedom fighters) are Catholic. NOT about religion at all. Although the USA news media would have you think so.

If I created some awful video about a group in this country, said horrible things about their leader and created unrest in some segment of the population, is that free speech? Freedom of choice and expression means that others may do or say things that are offensive to you right now but they won't get arrested for it (unless they are clearly threatening people's lives), on the bright side it also means that you may be doing or saying things that are offensive to others right now but you won't get arrested for it either.

Look at what Fox News and MSNBC are doing - taking people which rant on about their political parties and blame the other political party for all the evils in the U.S. (and the world). Throughout much of the world, the government really does control what movies can be made and what political cartoons are printed. Many poor muslims can't conceive of doing something on their own without the approval of the government and the religious leaders. That is why they are angry at the US government, they truly do believe that it is not possible for someone to do something without government approval.
I'm not saying the protestors are correct in damaging property, just explaining what is happening in some countries. In others, it is religious zealots, fanatics, extremists and the disaffected who will use any excuse to foment hate against the United States. So long as the US exists, we are able show that it is possible to live without having your life dictated by anyone, let alone a so called "religious" leader.
It is still not known if the attack in Libya was part of a plan, or simply the extremist group taking advantage of an opportunity. That too may be part of the reason for the protests. The more chaos that is created, the greater chance to do some damage to those who don't think as the Jihadists want.

Kai, the only reason the French mocking of Muhammad did not cause a wave of protests as opposed to American made "film" is because the French are not as hated as Americans are. It probably has to do with the fact that the French don't invade Muslim countries based on fake reasons. It might also have to do with the fact that the French do not financially sponsor a regime (Israel) that illegally occupies Muslim land. It might also have to do with the fact that the French do not have their troops stationed in Saudi Arabia - Muslim Holy Land. It might also have to do with the fact that the French did not spend the last 30 to 40 years sponsoring Arab kings and dictators who torture and murder their own people. But again, one can just abandon thinking and reason and just say that they hate us because were are free. After all reasoning and thinking is just too much work for some of our fellow citizens and some of our ex-presidents cough-cough Bush cough-cough. Personally I think John is entitled to his opinion, and I find it annoying when people collapse comments, especially the OPs comments (even when I disagree with them).
However, Freedom of speech does not mean that you have to stand there and listen to someone who is insulting you (or making you angry, or whatever else), nor that you are forced to watch a movie or read a book you don't like, it just means that the person has the right to say it without getting arrested and/or tortured and/or killed. And as much as I may dislike when people collapse certain comments, they also have the right to do so, just like any website has the right to remove offending comments. In fact I think NBC are pretty nice about this, you can post about any opinion without getting your post removed, while there is other news websites where they either don't allow you to post your opinion, or remove it whenever the author or the website owners disagree.

I was listening to a radio show host the other day who was attempting to explain how different the Islamic cultures of the Mid East was from our own. I don't claim I understood it fully--but here's what she was saying:
She asked one of the Islamic Mid East men what about the killing over Mohommad insults? The man explained that when an individual was killed--that was just one individual's life. That was less important than any perceived insult to Koran or their Prophet--because those insults injured every Islamic person.
I don't get it myself--but thought I'd pass it along. Let's face it--we don't understand each other's cultures, do we? Perhaps we don't even want to?

Osama Obama is the supposed commander in-chief of the United States! It is not appropriate for a commander to make statements, or anyone who works for him, without knowing all of the facts. LOL @ Maxwell. Do you understand what LDS is? It's the Church of JESUS CHRIST, of latter day saints. Saying that Mormonism isn't Christianity, is like saying that neither is Catholicism. They are BASED on Christianity, but they have different beliefs. Christians disagree with Catholics, and so do Mormons. But the fact is, the New Testament does not contain the developed doctrine of the Trinity, therefore even Christians these days could be considered to not believe in the creed either. Besides, what does the fact that Christians stand behind a Mormon have anything to do with the fact that they don't believe in the creed?
