Thousands descend on tiny Dutch town after Facebook invitation goes viral

Police officers were attacked and cars were set alight when a sweet 16 birthday party in the Netherlands turned into a nightmare. The Facebook invite, which was meant to be a private affair, became a party of thousands. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

AMSTERDAM -- Riot police broke up crowds of youths who turned violent in a tiny Dutch town late on Friday after several thousand people descended on the community after a schoolgirl's Facebook invitation to her sixteenth birthday party went viral.

Media reports said six people were hurt, including three seriously, after disturbances broke out in the quiet northern Dutch town of Haren. Reports said shops were vandalized and looted, a car set on fire and street signs and lampposts damaged before police broke up the crowds.

A teenager's birthday party in a small Dutch town got out of control when the invite went viral. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

Up to 600 riot police were on the scene during the disturbances, according to one media report. There were at least 20 arrests, media said.

Pictures from the scene showed party-goers wearing T-shirts with "Project X" written on them -- apparently a reference to the movie "Project X", in which three high school seniors throw a party that gets out of control as word spreads.

Some 30,000 people received the invitation from a girl announcing her birthday party on Facebook, according to media reports. The party was intended to be a small-scale celebration, but the girl did not set her Facebook event to private and the invitation went viral.

Chairs burn in the northern Dutch town of Haren late on Friday after thousands of party-goers showed up to a teenager's birthday party.

"She posted the invitation on Facebook and sent it to friends, who then sent it to other friends and soon it spread like wildfire across the Internet," Melanie Zwama, Groningen police spokeswoman told the AFP news agency according to the BBC.

Twitter account was set up to promote the event, and the Dutch Daily News identified a video posted on YouTube that also promoted the party.

Dutch DJs Yellow Claw and Afrojack -- who each have thousands of Twitter followers -- posted messages about the party on their accounts (in Dutch).

Reports said up to 3,000 people showed up in the town of 18,000.

Haren had been bracing for the event for most of the week.

Hundreds of youths gather in Haren, northern Netherlands, on Friday. Dutch mass-market daily De Telegraaf reported that tens of thousands of people received a Facebook invitation to a schoolgirl's birthday party.

NBC News' Nanette van der Laan and Reuters contributed to this report.

Great day to be Dutch again! Why can't people behave and have to act like this. Speedy recovery to the injured.

For a minute, I thought MSNBC was running repeats because there was a news story remarkably similar to this one just a year or so ago. That one also involved a teenage girl's birthday party, facebook, incorrect privacy settings, and hundreds of people showing up for her party. I don't remember where that one took place, though.

It amazes me sometimes of what some people are capable of. It only takes a few retards such as seen on the video to turn something that could have been great to something embarrassing. I wouldn't now put it past the people that got hurt or vandalized to sue the parents of the 16 year old for posting that on face book instead of going after the Conservative republican vandals.

@culheath - "idioten" - My parents-in-law live in Haren - I'm waiting for them to call today,. It is quite a cute little town, brick streets, etc. Most of the shops are Ma&Pa shops, not big chains, I hope the shopping district recovers (it's not that large....)

My father in law just emailed that "Last night sounded like war, violent young people stood on the roofs of the houses, 20 wounded - two critically, lots of vandalism and noise."

A better word would be "gek" - it means crazy!

Mommabear - true the police didn't hurt anyone (that we know of) but this village is very small - the vandalism alone is saddening, but two people may die and we don't know the injuries of the other 18 - I don't think of that as a "cool" party that "she won't be able to top."

Yes, "gek" means crazy, madman, fool, and did you know that is where we get the English word "geek" from, the Dutch word "gek"? These guys who showed up there were a bunch of geeks.

My mother in law is on the phone now- apparently once it went viral thousands used the train system to get to Haren - the police had dogs and basically surrounded the crowd in order to steer it - Police from all over helped to stop these kids (Groeningen, etc) - although they live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building, they were scared (they kept their lights off and just made a joke that they wished they could have a gun (in the Netherlands).

@Mickey - so you can speak Dutch as well? I'll remember that since I've seen you on other posts and I agree with you - now we can say a few things that won't be understood ;)

You can just imagine the type of morons who show up to a 16 year olds birthday party that they heard about on face book. Although 3,000 kids in a town of 18,000 doesn't seem that scary, 600 riot police sounds pretty scary though. I went to a Jr High School that had 1800 students imagine 1800 wild kids converging on one school then leaving, every school day. And we only had 3 cop cars with 2 cops in each one circling the area. But they didn't have the riot police mentality, if someone did something wrong the cops went after those individuals. They were never foolish enough to try to muscle the crowd.

"@Mickey - so you can speak Dutch as well? I'll remember that since I've seen you on other posts and I agree with you - now we can say a few things that won't be understood ;)"

I can read Dutch and its offshoot, Afrikaans, very well, but I am not fluent at speaking them. I can speak Afrikaans somewhat better than Dutch, though, since the grammar of Afrikaans is much simpler than Dutch grammar. Afrikaans verbs are not conjugated as they are in Dutch, and there are no genders to memorize in Afrikaans. "Het huis" and "de man" in Dutch are simply "die huis" and "die man" in Afrikaans.

    happytimesarehearagain,

"So much for quaint little lace hats and wooden shoes"

I mentioned wooden shoes to a Dutch lady I was sitting next to on a plane once, and she just smiled at me indulgently as if to say, "My! You are an idiot, aren't you?" I don't think they wear wooden shoes in the Netherlands anymore except on the farm. I have a book on the Netherlands that has a picture of some little farm boys in it, and I noticed that they are actually wearing wooden shoes. One of them was also peeing against a wall, by the way. You couldn't actually see him peeing because he had his back to you. But it was obvious from where his hand was that that is what he was doing.

Amazing that they can have riot gear (notice the wicker shield) and that the equipment of every Dutch police officer consists of the following:

        • Handcuffs
        • Short baton (long baton or whips for riots)
        • Pepperspray
        • Pistol Walther P5 (and DIDN'T use them!)
        • C2000 radio

They contained a crowd of 3000 and arrested about 20 - kudos to them!

Certainly evident in film and television is the fact that the only true "American" ideal that has spread through the rest of the world (even 3rd world nations) is "Gangsta Thug" behaviors. If you have seen any of those mercenary films (even the entertaining ones) the "bad guys" are always driving black caddies (SUVs) and banging gangsta rap crap. It's as if all of the world's idiots, decided it was cool to be like American black thugs and adopted this look and attitude. I wish they (the dutch) would have just machine-gunned them all down and end of story. America would be a lot safer (and quieter..thump,,thump..thump from the bass speakers) if our police could just take 'em out one by one. Remember Eve Carson.....that event was the end of my trying to wrap my head around the "trials and troubles" of young black youths. They choose, just like this crowd, to do horrible things to others (or their property) because it's fun.

People were out to make a riot. There are a lot of these social media related riots lately. Mostly in combination with popular football clubs when rivaling clubs meet. (You Americans call it soccer. The rest of the world calls it football.) I guess those rioteers explore the outer limits of the social media in a troubling way.

It's a shame that an intellect of the father of Facebook conducts himself like a child. I understand his frustration against the Wall St. primadonnas being a product of the '60's. He has created a revolution in communication. Rather than putting his efforts into anarchy and violence why not work with his peers and create a peaceful dialog for the entire world.

Way more important than most people making sure they are at work by 8 so that they can do some retarded job like think up iphone aps or some job their boss's haven't figured a cheaper way to do yet...

In a world where 1 in 4 people in jail are American, you would think you would like a little chaos and anarchy... More Americans are in jail than any other nationality. We can't even sit on a street corner without getting arrested. You can't hitch hike without getting arrested. And if you can't find a bathroom you better pee yourself because finding a private place nearby to do something completely natural will land you in the back of a squad car.

And as far as the dude from Facebook making a peaceful dialog I guess you didn't hear they are a corporation now. And peace don't pay.

Actually the Netherlands have a rich economy (besides legal marijuana). The economy of Amsterdam is extremely well developed. It is mainly based on the agriculture and industry. The industries that dominate the economy include tourism, chemical, automobile, shipping, electronics, etc.

The industries that determine the economic growth of Amsterdam include:

banking, media, chemical, electronics, shipping, tourism, automobile, horticulture, clothing, service industry, etc. Amsterdam is rich in mineral resources like peat, limestone, gas, petroleum, sand, gravel, salt and many others.

As a result, the mineral-based industries do not have to depend on other countries for raw materials.

The diamond-processing industries of the city contribute largely towards the economic growth of Amsterdam and the Netherlands as well.

So, NO the Dutch have a LOT to do...

The Anne Frank museum sucked. Once you see the building from the outside you have to stop and wonder how they managed to hide as long as they did. On the outside its an obvious 4 story building, but the Nazi's stopped at the shelf on the 2nd floor and assumed that was the entire building lol.

The party wasn't in Amsterdam, MommaBearII.

And you don't know what you are talking about. The Netherlands is quite poor in natural resources, and imports about 2.5 million barrels of oil/day, mostly from Russia. The Netherlands depends HEAVILY on other countries for resources, which is why they went all over the world as traders and colonizers.

ap-2718492. It is very easy to read about a nation before you call someone else wrong, when in fact it is you who are wrong. The Netherlands are one of the top exporting nations in the world, and one of the world's largest natural gas fields sits within it's borders. And besides that can you tell me what nation on Earth has everything that it needs, and therefore no need to import anything. There is no such nation.

And this article is about a situation in Denmark.

I still send out cards for invitations or send birthday cards. This is the problem with todays society everyone relys on technology and this the result. I don't know just call me old fashioned I guess

This riot stuff and Facebook thing seems to happen a lot over in europe!

So I have to wonder should facebook be banned or maybe slackers hould just slow dwon and stop clicking buttons longe enough to know what they are doing!

I mean one of these days the cops are just gonna say screw it and let the mobs do the damage and then arrest the rioters that are left behind!

Guess mailing out an invitaion is looking better and better!

Strange how folks with free medical care and high unemployment aren't worried about finding a job or staying safe but instead are happy to get into fights and run up the health care cost for everyone else!!

In addition, she got one gift never expected. A permanent legacy in that town. I imagine countless mothers for decades at least, will be telling their daughters about her. It seems to be that way in all the small towns I have visited across this nation. I currently live in a small town that is now surrounded by huge development myself. Yet folks still talk about events that happened 170 years ago like it was yesterday. Just adds character and spice to life:)

It's not Facebook it's the people abusing Facebook. Facebook is a public forum everyone knows that. Everyone should know that what you put up wont be private so you have to be smart about it. Facebook is 100% safe if you use it in an intelligent manner. It's not Facebooks fault its the users. I mean you can make privacy settings on your Facebook. There are ways to protect yourself from this. This could have been prevented if the parents were monitoring her and if the girl had just sent out simple card invitations. Personally I think this stuff happens to kids because they aren't monitored with the internet. Think about it these kids are free to be on the internet and go wherever they want and this is the result. It's the user, the parents (If it's a kid ) and it's how you use the internet. If you use it stupidly these are the things that can happen.

Actually, I think Facebook should be the other way around ... Everything should STAY PRIVATE unless you click a button to make it public. It makes me wonder about how people are raised ... I don't GO TO PARTIES I AM NOT INVITED TO .... it is RUDE people! My regrets go out to the people who were vandalized; because I am sure they are going to have to pay higher insurance rates from now on .... and really the stores that were vandalized should SUE the Party Crashers!!! And when they have to OWN up to what they did and PAY for it .... maybe they will think twice about their destructive behaviour.

What exactly is being covered up? Stories like this pop up on all the major news sites all the time. Again, a cover-up means a particular story is being hidden, and the ones you mention can't qualify because you and other people already know about them. Close to 50% of this country thinks Obama is a failure, so how is this story covering it up?

Just like in the case of this story, people need to actually think before posting. In your case, think about whether your thought is insightful, or just another vague, weak talking point you are parroting from the idiot pundits who inform the herd's way of thinking.

It takes a lot of guts to lament the lack of poverty and war in the first world.

Also, you know nothing about the under 30 crowd. You read news stories like this and are foolish enough to think that they present an accurate portrait of the state of today's youth. There are, as always, a lot of lazy bums out there (of all ages, in all countries.) There are also, as always, a lot of hard workers (of all ages) who are doing their best to get by.

But yes, there are some young people (not as many as you think) who do spend most of their free time "texting, facebooking" and, uh, "tatin" (?). Many of them will grow out of it. Will you ever grow out of your need to generalize and stereotype enormous groups of people?

I'll leave you with a quote:

"The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have
no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all
restraint. They talk as if they alone knew everything and what passes
for wisdom with us is foolishness with them."
