Libya's army has given militias and armed groups 48 hours to leave military compounds, state property and properties of members of the former regime in Tripoli and surrounding areas, the official LANA news agency said on Sunday.
The announcement came after the Islamist Ansar al-Sharia militia was swept out of its bases in the eastern city of Benghazi on Friday in a surge of anger against the armed groups that still control large parts of Libya more than a year after the overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi.
Omar Turbi, a California-based analyst of Libya, told regional news channel Al Jazeera that the "demonstrations ... were a clear indication that the majority of the Libyan people are not in favor of extremism".
The army ordered "all individuals and armed groups occupying military compounds, public buildings or property belonging to members of the former regime to evacuate these sites within 48 hours", threatening to use force if the groups did not comply, LANA said.
U.S. officials praise the Libyan government for its response to the attack on the American consulate, but they're more critical of the Egyptian response to violent protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.
It added that the army had already dislodged a militia from a military complex on the highway leading to Tripoli's international airport on Sunday. It did not name the militia but said the army had arrested its members and seized its weapons.
Protesting Libyans storm militant compound in backlash against armed groups
Friday's invasion of Ansar al-Sharia's compounds, which met little resistance, appeared to be part of a sweep of militia bases by police, troops and activists following a large demonstration against militia units in Benghazi on Friday.
On Saturday, two Islamist militias in the eastern town of Derna, long seen as an Islamist stronghold, announced they were disbanding and evacuating their compounds.
Libya's new rulers have struggled to impose their authority on the myriad of armed groups that have so far refused to lay down their arms, and in fact rely on many of them to provide security.

A day late and a dollar short....our Ambassador has already been killed.
And I suppose you could have done better?
In America the government can't disarm it's people until they violate the law. You should be applauding their following democratic principles. Can't have it both ways JW101. The Libyan people have put up with crazy Qaddafiand appear to not be willing to put up with anymore extremists. Remember the US government put up with militias for the first 80 + years of our existence. It help fuel our civil war. It then died out until our current crop of crazies.
Looks like Libya is getting the clue that escapes many countries in the ME: You can't govern a country that hosts armed groups operating outside the law. Good for them. Too bad Lebanon, Gaza, Yemen, Afghanistan, and Pakistan haven't figured that out.
jw101 is a troll. There is no satisfying a troll because all they want to do is cause disruption. Diplomacy works better than armed aggression.
The same militias we helped into power last year. We reap what we sow.
Some encouraging news out of the ME and the extremists here in the US either stay far away (as evidenced by the low # of posts), or cry sour grapes like jw101.
Doom and gloom is all some people know.
There may be hope yet. Extremism in the Islamic world will eventually fall by the wayside. The Human race will not tolerate it, and the Human race is bigger and has been around longer than Islam or any other organized religion.
Devils son Really??? And all along I thought the Civil War was a political battle over free labor and leadership but I guess you think it was a rowdy.. I guess to you anyone who owns a gun in the US is a Crazies.. Militias were the biggest part of how we won the revolution.. Don't expect our government to become emboldened by the Libyans disarming groups that are actively imposing rule of law in an unsanctioned fashion.. And please do not compare the gun owners and groups here in the US that have been labeled with the now evil tag of being a Militia because these groups are not doing what the Militia groups over there are..
These "MILITIAS" out number the Libyan army SO just how are they going to enforce this as the MUSLIM Bros are entrenched in LIBYA as well as the rest of the world.
MORSI and HIS MUSLIM BROS is an INTERNATIONAL TERRORIST GROUP that WILL stop at nothing to further the reaches of the CULT of ISLAM and its violent SHARIA.
BEFORE any attempt to TRASH ME---DO your own research---I have seen this trash up close and in my face---and YOU might to!
Muslim Brotherhood: A Global Terrorist Influence
Before Osama bin Laden formed al Qaeda, he belonged to the Muslim Brotherhood. So did his top deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri and the 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
In addition, the terrorist group Hamas identifies itself as the Muslim Brotherhood's Palestinian branch.
Why are there so many jihadists drawn to the Brotherhood? The group's official motto may tell the story.
It reads:
¦Allah is our objective.
¦The prophet is our leader.
¦Qur'an is our law.
¦Jihad is our way.
¦Dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope.
The Brotherhood was founded in 1928 in Egypt, with the goal of spreading Islamic Sharia law worldwide and uniting all Muslim nations into one Islamic super state. It was eventually banned in Egypt, but for the past several decades has worked behind the scenes to the point where it's now considered the most influential Islamist organization in the world -- with chapters in more than 100 countries
Former FBI Special Agent John Guandolo told CBN News the United States must become more aware of the Brotherhood's growing influence.
"Here in the United States, virtually every prominent Islamic organization is controlled and led by the Muslim Brotherhood," said Gunadolo. "Why this is key, is because they see that they are going to destroy our Western civilization from within."
IT would NOT surprise me one bit to find out that THEOBAMA is a member after all HE was a PRACTICING MUSLIM for 31 years---
OBAMA practiced it daily at school, where you were registered as a Muslim and kept that faith for 31 years, until your wife made you change, so you could run for office.

I think it is great to see these people stating to stand up for themselves. Better off trying to make something of the new regime rather than living under a tyrants boot.
You know when we help someone to over through its government and say they should elect there own government, we have to let the chips fall where they may. Was it any surprise what happened in Iraq, or Lebanon, or any of the others. These people vote for who they know. We knew the brotherhood was going to gain control over there. But now that they have power, they have changed. Power is different when you have it. Give the a chance to do the right thing. If they want our help, witch they do, they know what is expected of them. All these country's over there are new. They need our help kinda like we needed help when we broke away from England. The French helped us. And it took something like 13 years to put the US Government together. These guys haven't had 13 months.
The threat is no worse than "Knock this block off my shoulder", "Cross this line", "I double dog dare you". What a mess.
Could it be that they don't want obama destroying their country anymore with airstrikes and tomahawk cruise missles. They already know by experience that obama wont bother to get congressional approval prior to taking military action.
We need to thank Libya for steping up and admitting that it was a terrorist attack that killed 4 americans, and for taking steps to ensure the terrorist activity is brought to an end in Libya. The new Libyian gov. is activily taking care of buisness unlike obama as he wont admitt he was wrong and is sticking to the movie plot even though other members of his admin. has admitted that Libya is telling the truth. The up comming debates should be pretty interesting on matters of foriegn policy.

To those who choose to beat the anti-Obama drum regarding the situation in Libya, I'd point out that the last administration did everything it could to alienate muslims, and we should count ourselves lucky that even one country in the middle east is taking steps to enforce the rule of law.

Peggy I guess you want more government control from our Islamic Communist organizer Obama and Communist organizer Hillary.. They hate the rich but they are money holders themselves.. Any time people challenge Big Government they are labeled crazies.. Tea Party, Occupy and so on, no I am not a card carrying member but some off their arguments are valid.. I would think it better to wipe out school debts than give billions to crooked bankers and greedy CEO's so they can pass out millions of dollars in bonuses to people who trashed investors retirement funds.. I am not Repub. or Dem. because our leaders have all been brain dead sheep for the money mill.. The day the government looses its fear of the people of this country we will become a communist dictatorship..
I admire how the Libyan people are standing up against violent extremists. Libya is pretty much the only Arab country where a large number of citizens don't view the United States as an enemy.
We should do our best to make friends with them, so that the ambassador didn't die in vain. After all, their willingness to act against the militias suggests that they'd make good allies.
With all of the rhetoric on these posts many seem to be unable to comprehend what you are conveying. Personally, I was not expecting the news I am receiving from Libya today. Perhaps I am showing my own ignorance by being surprised. However, I won't look a gift horse in the mouth and will remain hopeful that the current thinking of Libya's masses will not change.
Agreed , although I am in a wait and see how this all turns out mode , right now it could go in any direction but I am hopeful the idea of no more extremism will spread far and wide . If the idea catches on it could change the entire region into a prospering mecca rather than the war torn poverty stricken region we see today .
With all of the history and culture they have in that area of the world , should it ever turn peaceful over there , many people would love to visit and learn all there is to know about that region , but when one has to worry about getting their head cut off with a dull knife it really depresses tourism .
Moar,
Iran as well though you would never guess it from their stupid ass Government.
Well there's a real reason behind why most Libyans do not think of the US as an enemy.Way back in 1797 the US and the Libyans agreed that any armed conflict they may have in the future will in no way involve a religous precedence and yes most of Libya was Muslim back then too. This treaty basically was about sea piracy but indeed this issue has been around quite awhile and was decided upon by both countries a long long time ago and still stands to this day.
This development further validates President Obama's foreign policy. While republicans such as John McCain wanted boots on the ground, the president's policies resulted in absolutely no american casualties- no deaths, no injuries- and produced a free and democratic nation with a populace that takes to the streets to support America against islamist militias, a people who expresses love for our ambassador and joins us in mourning for his murder.
Robert Warner-3092405....."This development further validates President Obama's foreign policy. While republicans such as John McCain wanted boots on the ground, the presidents policies resulted in absolutely no american [SP] casualties- no deaths, no injuries- and produced a free and democratic [SP] nation...."
Flashback ONE WEEK: "....the presidents policies resulted in absolutely no american [SP] casualties- no deaths, no injuries....." Diplomat and THREE other American citizens were KILLED at a consulate. How soon we forget. Maybe you should apply for a job working for Ambassador Rice, the SofS, or the Obama Administration.
As for "a free and democratic nation", let's wait another month and see what "blossoms" within the "government".
Yep, Mr. Obama's foreign appeasement policy has really worked well.
Now, Morsi wants the U.S. to bow down to Islamic values and demands a Palistanian State. Meanwhile, the rest of the ME, North Africa, and other "places" are holding protests against America (Death to America), burning American flags, and burning effigies of Mr. Obama.
Yep, Mr. Obama's foreign appeasement policy has really worked well. (double statement)
Time to get out from under that Progressive mushroom.
IDO, you know as well as I do that those casualties were AFTER the Libyan's liberation. If you want to hold the president responsible for all deaths at the hand of islamists violence, that would make George Bush responsible for all deaths on 9/11. That would be ridiculous. To depose Saddam Hussein, how many American soldiers died? To liberate Libya, NONE died and none were injured. Luckily, America ihas caught on to Republican lies such as you try to push here. Henve, Romney's losing on every poll today.
Appeasement?- ask Osama binLaden and and the Alquaeda's dead leaders if they feel appeased. Obama took the war to Alquaeda and destroyed them. Cooperation with other nations is not appeasement, and it has shown to be a successful strategy.
Robert Warner-3092405....." those casualties were AFTER the Libyan's liberation. ....Obama took the war to Alquaeda [SP] and destroyed them."
Again, living in an Obama mushroom World.
robert,
i agree with you. and mr. president DID answer the demands of egypt to apologize and bow down-he refused to meet with the president of egypt when he comes to the states. it's making a statement loud and clear without having to actually SAY anything. sometimes actions speak volumes. and as yet, i haven't heard mr. obama speaking anywhere apologizing to anyone for anything. in fact, the one thing he DID say is that he does not consider egypt an ally or an enemy.
i think if the middle east wants us and the rest of the western world to 'respect' them, then they need to put on their big boy pants and stop burning up their own streets every time some one says something that insults their religion.
imagine how they would react if we descended upon the egyptian consulate here and rioted every time they burned an american flag. talk about wwiii. but, they seem to think they have to right to insult us, and we're supposed to bend over. i read an article in newsweek by a woman who was raised muslim and lived in the middle east most of her life. she has now renounced her faith and spoken out against the radicals. it is probably not a surprise that her life is in danger as she has been declared a heretic. BUT, she says that the worst thing the west can do is try to appease the radical movement and i agree. i don't mean we should go out of our way to insult them, but we need to make absolutely sure that they understand that we will NEVER be dictated to by any other country. we will NOT censure our citizens because they demand it. we live in a free society and that will not change. the world is full of people who do not believe in islam and many who really hate it. they will continue to speak out and the people of islam need to get a serious grip on their anger.
but, let's make sure we keep in mind that it is NOT every muslim in the world that is screaming like crazy. you noticed there was not rioting going on in this country. no protests at the state department demanding that we arrest these people who offended islam. in fact, here in california, the head of the islamic church came out, i think it was the next day after our ambassador was killed, and they denounced the violence against the united states. they held a press conference and later a vigil WITH the local jewish leadership for peace.
while there are many here that decry the evil islamics, we have to be ever vigilant for our rights here in this country from the radical religious right that is as we speak using big money and their own archaic, violence prone, hate-filled dogma to take over this country and turn IT into a theocracy. they aren't even trying to be covert about it anymore. they have had presidential candidates espousing this radical belief system that would take away the rights of women and gays and anyone else who doesn't kowtow to their beliefs. so, while we watch what is going on in the middle east, let us not forget that we are also fighting against religious extremism right here. i happen to be a christian, but it is because i CHOOSE, not because some law has forced me. i never had an abortion, but it was because i CHOSE not to, not because some law prevented me. i don't believe in organized religion and no law is going to change that.
people all over the world, the ones trying so hard to take over and install these theocracies, need to understand, you cannot legislate a person's soul. our consciousness, our hearts belong to us. as shakespeare said, "every man's soul is his own." no amount of violence or no law can rule over that. in the end, FREEDOM will win out.
BTW. Seems the bogeymen Al Qaeda is alive and well, not matter how YOU, and your fellow Progressives, spin it:
Don't feed the troll named Ido... it must be tough always being so angry and bitter, my condolences on your terrible life.
A Palestinian free state was agreed upon in the Camp David Accords. The United States as well as Egypt and Israel are all signatories. In asking for a Palestinian free state, Morsi is requesting that both the United States and Israel live up to their treaty obligations. He wants to see if treaties with the United States and Muslim countries will be 'REAL' treaties which will be honored, or treaties like the ones between the U.S. and our own Native Americans, not worth the paper they were printed on.
"Libya orders militias to disband"
This means the Libyan government had some control when the militias attacked the US consulate?
NO, it means they ordered them, whither they obey that order is another question entirely. Stupid TROLL !
A more reasonable explanation is that the libyan government didn't know until the demonstrations how much or little backing the militias had from the general population. They needed to understand the backlash or lack of before they moved to reign in the militias.
Thats what I think too Discusted, and I think they got their answer last week, and I do not blame the Libyan citizens one bit for being angry with their militias. They've put up with a lot and they should not have to.They have a lot of smart kids over there and a very bright future monetarily if done well..I hope all the best for them they have a lot of work to do.Just have to keep thinking that it's all worth it.
A more reasonable explanation is that the libyan government didn't know until the demonstrations how much or little backing the militias had from Obama. They needed to understand the backlash or lack of before they moved to reign in the militias.
People of Libya...
Thank you for having the courage to stand up for what is right and to take a positive position for your country against the militias turning a bad situation into an opportunity to do good.
May your example be carried to the rest of the Middle East as the seeds of peace. No one wants any more violence in the world so let your action be the first step to stabilizing the region for prosperity in the future.
Signed,
An American
JRS-619990 -- well said. I'm an American too.
Hopefully this will work and there will not be any "wink-wink" between Morsi and the militias.
If America hadn't have aided in the removal of the first strong armed leader Libya wouldn't have to deal with the Chaos and bloodshed it's dealing with now. Of course that would defeat America's goal which is to create complete chaos in the Middle East. We started with Iraq before moving to Afghanistan and Pakistan. After we succeeded in uprooting those two nations we moved on to Libya where we ran that insurgency and ultimate victory by getting a seasoned ruler removed and executed. Now we're attempting to do the same in Syria with our little quasi war we are waging. This little insurgency we've created in Syria has nothing to do with Democracy it's nothing more than international terrorism in the name of Democracy. It's a disgrace and an affront to what this country used to stand for. Obama should be arrested and charged before the World Court for crimes against humanity for authorizing the arming and funding of these terrorists and thugs that are currently operating inside Syria in their attempts to overthrow Assad. These "freedom" terrorists are killing innocent non combatants and blaming it on government troops. They're also involved in rapes and other violent acts, all in the name of Democracy isn't that right Obama? Obama should also face charges in the gun running case he personally authorized that resulted in the death of a Federal Officer. Of course he'll escape any responsibility for any of this because he's well insulated. That however does not absolve him of his role in these illegal and hideous actions. You have an opportunity this November to make some real change and vote this Socialist loser Pig out of the White House while we still have a country worth saving.....People wonder why America is so hated around the rest of the world. It's because We're the biggest hypocrite's on the planet. We went to the Middle East because of terrorism and here we are raping and killing the innocent in Syria after doing the same in Libya and for what?? Democracy?? Please don't insult us with that weak line...This isn't for Democracy just call it was it is - A war against Islam.....I'm OK with that but don't stand there and lie to the people of this country like we're sheep being led to slaughter it doesn't work that way...America the great is now America the two faced liar.....Sad Sad Sad
overunder Fox seems to have lost one of it's sheep. I hear them calling for you now.
Along with your time-lines, being incorrect. It sounds like you prefer dictators, over freedom.
Bush, first attacked Afghanistan, then Iraq. Obama, has the job, of trying to fix, what Bush wrecked.
What is happening, in Libya, gives me hope. Not despair!
Are you a supporter of the "OLD REGIME"? I applaud the Libyians for their courage and good will towards the USA and think we need more of this.We supported them to over through a tyrant, if you think other wise you sir are a fool!
The United States of America has a separation of Church and State exactly for this reason, the founding fathers knew the the religons in europe had been behind many of the wars and wanted none of it here.
It is very unfortunate that we can not just simply "BAN" this very stupid film but we can't. I know you don't understand because in many muslum countries many things are baned, but we chose a different path please respect that, and we will try to respect your religon as well.
I think it's time for his meds..the schizophrenia's kickin in again...
This is certainly a necessary step and one in the right direction. Carry On!
Overunder -
First, Islam attacked the US in the name of Allah and that means they started a religious war against America. Middle Eastern and African countries have been dealing with chaos and bloodshed because of Islam for a very very very long time. It does not matter to the Islamic attacker if he kills peaceful Islamic believers because they are in the way of their blood thistry quest to conquer the West. America has not uprooted anything that caused violence anywhere. Iran and its blood thirsty clergy are causing the problem.
You don't have reform in Islam for the same reasons Christian reform stalled out before enlighenment brought real knowledge into the world. Islam stalled out at its inception, because greedy selfish men driven by their lustful desires they hide in dark places no ordinary Muslim will ever see, drive the normal muslim crazy with promies the clerics can not keep. When greedy Islamic leaders are threatened with exposure, they start another war against the infidel, who can be anyone they choose; even their own people. Or, when their lusts increase they stir up the clerics to stir up their congregations to wage war in the name of Allah so they can have more and more.
If the militants in Libya that the peaceful protesters marched against, had been residents of Libya they would have joined the protesters march rather than run from it. That peaceful march represents victory for the peaceful people of Libya and the militants are not part of peace. The militants made a phone call and the Iranian cleric on the other end told them to leave.
It is not a war against Islam. It is Islam's war against peace. They attacked a country that was at peace with them.
If you arrest Obama, you will also have to arrest all the leaders in all the world from the beginning of time. There are retired world leaders everywhere who have supported the overthrow of other governments. Do you want only the ones that finance the overthrow of a foreign government arrested or do you also want everyone who has voiced their opinion to overthrow a foreign government? America is not the only country who has ever supported a foreign government or its overthrow.
The people who practice Islam, have overthrown many countries, none of which belonged to Islam, and those countries several times each to promote the universal practice their religious beliefs. People own the country they inhibit, not a religion. Iran is the double faced lying trouble maker in the world today, not America.
We are not now America the two faced liar, we have been called America the two faced liar by Islamic believers for a very very long time. Politcs, like relgion is populated by people who lie and most go on to do some very remarkable work for the good of a lot of people. But they have to go on by reforming them self. Some go on to fly stolen airplanes into other peoples buildings. Islam has not reformed it self once in all its history. It started out with violence and lies and it has remained so to this day.
Everybody and I mean everybody including you, has lied. Be careful who you call a hypocrite. You might offend someone. Did you understand my double meaning? Then, you may not be American.
Those that pray five times daily would love to get the chance to behead those that do not pray at all. The only way an infidel can survive among a Muslim community is to pay dues called Jizya. It is against the wishes of Allah to slaughter an infidel that is paying Jizya. The protest in Libya was against those that murdered the Jizya paying Americans.
B.S. .....period........................
This is a good thing. Maybe this country stands a chance after all. Let's hope that this takes hold in other countries where they got rid of one dictator only to be threatened with these little dictators trying to take over.
Only the people who live in these countries can really do anything about improving their situations. It is time for the old guards to realize that not everyone wants their brand of religious hostage lives. The younger people need to stand up for their right to live a peaceful life.
This isn't really the watershed moment most are making it out to be. The local population has turned on Islamists in Chechnya, Afghanistan, Yemen, the Palestinian territories...it happened with the 1920 Revolution Brigade during the so-called "Sunni Awakening" in Iraq. There's been local in-fighting in these places for decades.
And yet, GASP!, none of these places seem to be very Pro-Western. None of them seem to be in rush towards democracy and becoming the next France or England.
Well let's hope they are not on there way to becoming another France or England. The world does not need another monarchy or imperialist nation.
Thank you for that. I had no idea that France and England were such horrible places. I'll make sure to avoid them like the plague when planning my next vacation.
Your welcome. Now you know, always happy to help!
Under strict orders from Washington the Libyan government has undertaken reluctantly an attempt to disarm the thugs who over threw the previous government. Good luck, this will in all likely hood result in a second battle for control of the country. Libya is hopelessly divided into tribes and terrorist organizations, all competing for a piece of the political and economic pie.
Over the last week the US government has been placing the blame for the death of three Americans at the door step of terrorists and others, when the blame lies squarely on the United States and NATO who destroyed a country, and armed the terrorists allowing an atmosphere of chaos and anarchy. Clinton's leadership of the State Department has been down right incompetent and dangerous to world stability and peace. China will not talk to her and Russia is throwing out US NGO's, Egypt's president goes first to China for talks and the United States is closer to a world war than anytime since the Cold War ended. The entire US foreign policy is in shambles because of Obama and Clinton's inexperience and incoherent policies.
"Under strict orders from Washington"? Do you really believe the nonsense you post or are you just a paid troll? Your post is the biggest bunch of nonsense I've read on Newsvine in a long time.

No,with this it is seeming more and more that this is a local incident, and that it was based on general ignorance by both parties(the militias and the local govt). It may end up with militia members being arrested for murder and conspiracy.Hey,we at one time were a bunch of local tribes and terrorist militias also ,dont forget!Look how we turned out.they have a lot of work ahead of them and they may not turn out like we think they will.Democracy is ever changing,so dont lose hope just yet, give em time..
We are always two steps away from a world war McCarthy, dont forget thats what we signed up for when the Soviet Union disbanded. Is'nt all that wonderful up at the top is it?the blame will always be somewhat on us because thats what the rest of the world seems to want from us.I cant blame Egypt for going to China first they're easier to deal with than we are.Seems since our Lower House has been in power that pretty much the rest of the world has a hard time dealing with us.Methinks its time to kick the Lower House to the street and let compromise and actually getting some work done around the world, beginning with our own country's issues.take over the reigns.
Obama should spell it out to the ZIONIST scum that if they start a war with Iran that will be their problem. They can draft the 5 million Jews in the US for their army, no gentiles to fight for that evil regime. Also draft those morons the evangelical retards to go fight for the zionists
You should head back to your hole in the middle east.
Efforts like this by the Lbyan government makes me feel alot better and our intervention to help liberate the libyan people
Ambassoder Stevens died. And Obama lied!
Romney/Ryan-2012 and beyond!
This is the kind of response by Libya that gives me some hope. If this attitude was replicated around the middle east, it might begin to make me feel like they were on the path towards becomming a civilized people. Of course, the disgusting behavior of Pakistan puts a damper on that.
It's a step in the right direction.
So much of what is said here is opinion without any knowledge. There is no knowledge of the culture, of the economy, of the religion or of the complex political structures that influence and affect the Middle East.
Would you want to be judged on the basis of the men who blew up the Federal Building in Oklahoma City? Do they represent the beliefs and emotions of all Americans? Do neo-Nazis and KKK members represent all Americans? Or do the majority of Americans reject the hatred and intolerance and paranoia these kinds of people represent?
Every country and every religion have extremists and lunatics who twist and warp and defile the beliefs of the majority. We cannot judge everyone because of the actions of some. Poverty and ignorance and religion are not a good combination in any country. When your leaders use those factors to create hatred against scapegoats, it gets even worse. For many years, the dictators of the Middle East have deflected the discontent of their people by blaming the US and Israel for every problem.
The US has not helped. Their willingness to invade, to bomb, and to attack have helped the dictators to blame US aggression for their own failure as leaders.
It is, in fact, very important to send the message that we do not hate all of Islam. Their leaders have told them that the US hates Islam and wishes to destroy Islam, so every time we act as aggressors we fuel the fires of their fear and hatred. We can change this, but we must begin by respecting the beliefs of others. If we can live side by side with each other and all of the different beliefs in this country, surely we can extend that respect and tolerance to those in the Middle East. If they don't have to fear us, then they probably won't hate us. Terrorism grows out of fear and hate. It cannot flourish in an atmosphere of tolerance and respect.
Thank you underemployed, very well said. You are absolutley right.I as a US citizen have no animosity towards any religon. We do not hate all of Islam and we do not hate ANY religous belief.,I have many Islamic friends as well as Sikhs and Jews and Hindu and Christians and even a few Jehovah's Witnesses.Plus a Mormon or 2.We all get along admirably where I work and live.I was born and grown up around pretty much all types of groups and was taught to respect all of them unless they do not respect you.And I have to say I have been lucky enough to learn and understand a lot of different cultures in the meantime.I just hope others cans ee past their narrow view of how the world works and get past their deflected anger to see others in a different light.
A person has to reach a certain level of nihilism to attain the type of tolerance you talk about. People simply aren't tolerant when it comes to anything they really care about. We just happen to be a country that doesn't care much about religion so its easy to look at the Middle East and say that Moslems need to lighten up, need to let Western culture in, need to let their daughters dress like Britney Spears...
...I wonder how tolerant we'd be when it comes to something we ACTUALLY care about though. I wonder how many Americans would tolerate forced segregation. I wonder how tolerant we'd be if our radio stations started broadcasting Shari'a law.
If we reacted violently to these developments we'd be "intolerant" by your standards.
Who says the militias are the extremists?
well, at the least the one example (Ansar al-Sharia) is connected to al quada and is suspected of leading the attack on the consulate. Unless that is incorrect, they seem to be more extreme than the others.
Don't tell me we are going to have to send our CIA, Criminals In Action "volunteers" for a second strike. The older this "democracy" grows older, the more stupid it seems to get. Look what we did to and in Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc and we are still trying to change the world and we still don't get it. Does the rest of nations need to surrender their natural resources or risk being taken over by force? I'm afraid so, but also let's remember we can't continue paying the militias 300.00usd a month, that doesn't say a lot about us being the most powerful nation in the world. Does anybody at the higher ups have any common sense left?
Critical times hard to deal with, will be here.
George, all times are critical times when you are regarded as a superpower, see thats what we all here in the US signed up for..to be the world's cop.
I applaud those of Islamic belief that want to live in peace alongside people of every faith. The people of Libya are taking that step in what appears to be the right direction. I welcome them and wish them the best of luck. If other Islamic nations follow their leed then there might be some hope for peace but I fear that the extremist will not relinquish power readily and many will die before the end.
You go Libya. What a surprise.
