Reports early Monday from China suggest that a mass disturbance or riots may have broken out at a Foxconn factory in the Chinese city of Taiyuan.
It is still unclear what exactly happened, but posts on China’s popular twitter-like service, Weibo, from users in the area show photographs and video of large numbers of police in and around the factory – many in riot gear – blocking off throngs of people.
Other photos show debris strewn around the Foxconn compound and in one case, an overturned guard tower.
According to popular tech blog engadget, the disturbance kicked off after Foxconn security guards allegedly hit a worker around 10 p.m. on Sunday.
Censors in China have reportedly already started deleting pictures from the scene.
This is not the first time that Foxconn has had problems with its Taiyuan facility, which is reportedly responsible for the fabrication of the back plate of the immensely popular new iPhone 5. In March, strikes broke out there after workers did not receive a pay raise they had reportedly been promised.

Meanwhile, Foxconn’s Chengdu plant in Sichuan province also has dealt with riots. In June, scores of Foxconn workers there got into a fight with a local restaurant owner that had to be broken up by police.
Foxconn is the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer responsible for much of the current production and assembly of Apple’s popular line of products as well as a wide variety of popular tech toys ranging from laptops to gaming consoles.
But Foxconn has been under fire for years for its tough working conditions, including long hours, low wages and strict rules on representation. The company has also dealt with a string of suicides at its plants across China, which led to the company in 2010 installing anti-jump nets to prevent more suicide attempts.
The company has taken steps to improve working conditions in its factories by reducing work hours and raising wages for its front-line workers.
Still, perhaps wary of the continued negative publicity that has plagued one of its primary manufacturers over the years, Apple recently took steps to diversify its portfolio of producers, recently awarding much of the manufacturing of its new iteration of the iPad to another Taiwanese company, Pegatron.

the legacy of Steve jobs - an economic traitor. apple could have produced its products in the usa with a cost of sixty four dollars more than in china, but refused to dos so. Steve jobs was and remains a plantation owner, using slave labor. this is how Romney has worked in the past and will foster in the future - outsource to create massive corporate profits which keeps the middle class in the usa from returning to a previous lifestyle and making minimum wage, which the gopers will disallow. this is their plan for the usa and it reeks of empire building, a military war machine at the ready and an ill informed, misinformed electorate. this is the plan, the grand scheme of Karl Rove - a sinister little impotent fat white boy who panders to the strong elements who keep him in luxury and come to him for his views on how to occupy other countries assets, keep military bases everywhere and create an American Empire. all empires fall sooner or later and i hope our electorate can see what exactly the gopers are doing and where they will take us if they win in November.
take america back from these elitists, with their own views on their entitlements to govern because they have been so criminally successful - all fortunes begin with a crime.
as for the Chinese, well they have thousands standing outside just waiting to replace those who dissent.
obama/biden 2012
btw - will we hear from mitt on this foxcomm issue? i doubt it, eh will avoid the present by pointing to his futuristic reality world views, ending with, oh by the way Obama is a Muslim. how trite.
B!tch, b!tch, b!tch, Apple...b!tch, whine, Apple... whine, whine, b!tch, Apple...
Ah, the gentle chirping of losers... music to my ears!
I'll make a ringtone out of it. ;-)
They probably got tired of working 60 hours a week at 38 cents per hour. But not to worry, when we get rid of these nasty unions over here, we can lower our wages just as low and keep the work here. It's obvious we're overpaid, because the "job creators" just don't have enougn money to create those jobs.
Actually, the rank and file workers get around 3000 RMB/month, which at the hours and days per week they work is less than 30 cents an hour at today's exchange rate.
Oh, but they get some benefits: a slummy apartment bedroom with four people in it and a new years gift easily worth $5.
Apple currently makes a profit of $452 on each iPhone (a gross profit of 71.9%) thanks to its low labor costs in China, but in the U.S. that number would drop to $293 for each phone (a gross profit of less than 50%). Apple had cash of $140 billion on hand when this article was written in April 2012 and after the cash hoarder Steve Jobs died they decided to pay some dividends.

And yet Sprint, Verizon and AT&T sell them for $199.
Care to explain, with links to support your claims?
-god
you're right I'm getting a 64G for $399.00.
And you're getting a good phone.
A lot of people here like to complain about Apple. Usually people who know nothing about the company or their products. They are trying to fix things with Foxconn but none of the whiners will admit it.
Anyway, they can whine all they want. It's them against everyone else who made Apple the most valuable company on the planet. And made my Apple stock climb by around 70% for the past year by continuing to come out with cutting-edge products, technology, and the best tech support in the business. ;-)
Whiners, you may carry on!
Sprint, Verizon & AT&T pay full price to Apple, and subsidize the cost to you in order to get you to sign that 2 year agreement. The fact that you don't know that simple obvious truth speaks volumes about you.
The fact that you can't provide links speaks volumes about you.
Google shopping on the 64gb version states the price to be in the thousands. I can't believe my eyes either. On AT&T's website they state the base price without a contract, just the phone to be $849.
2 of my 3 daughters are interested in it, so I have to price it out eventually, what with Christmas coming. Santa Claus just might find it in his heart to leave a couple of these in their stockings.
Yes, I still believe in (being) Santa Claus... so you know how I feel about God.
PBS did a report on Chinese labor conditions 2+ years ago - and it included Foxconn. Nothing has changed. Its slave labor. Anyone using Foxconn (including Apple) is facilitating slave labor.
With the world getting in the shape that is in getting under the Obama watch I and I hope all Republicans will get out and vote early I will vote as early as I can.
Bama, Yea..Mitt will only help Corporations. Thats why he got the superpacs. Not to help regular Americans. Not to get us jobs. He's all for helping his "friends" get Record Profits more easily. Tell me you can't see that. With Mitt there will be more outsourcing, more layoffs, disaster for US..maybe bigger profits for Corps. Big Deal.
To bad Obama isn't much better in that he favors Big Banks and the Military, but at least he is willing to do something for regular people in This country. Get GE to pay more than ZERO in taxes, Penalize Corps for Outsourcing and reward for IN with Congresses HELP. Get a few jobs going.
Us regular people are really against a rock &a hard place. Both candidates make me shudder with real disqust. Corporate/Banker/Military Growth and to hell with the people. Both of them aren't worth a job at Wal-mart.
It would be great if the workers smashed the apple factory and Apple decided to bring the jobs home. But wait, the US workers would want to unionize and demand $30 and hour living wage, 4 weeks vacation, health insurance, pension, paid holidays, double pay for anything over 32 hour work weeks, one hour lunch hour, four 10 minute breaks per 7 hour shift and finally, workman comp when they get carpal tunnel and disability for life when there back starts to hurt. In addition, they want the right to sue apple over repetitive disorders of the wrist, elbow and shoulder and back chairs creating bad backs. Um, I think Apple should keep the shops overseas.
You are right on and you forgot about the Obama high Tax.
You mean its OK for the Chinese to be treated so badly.
Guard tower at work? How many are tortured there everyday? The world doesn't care as long as the profit margin is high on manufacturing. No laws, rights, safety, fair wage, or dignity for my brothers in their struggle for freedom! Freedom knows no color or race, it is a human right. Like free will. Will you support demockracy?
Vote Republican and we can have this right here in the United States. Michelle Bachmann, a Tea Party favorite, and other Republicans have publicly stated that we should do away with minimum wage. They could use the labor savings to buy jump nets for their slaves, I mean employees.
The Pig Farm.
So are the guard towers to keep people out or the workers in?
Chinese government officials better start removing the gold from public view and stockpile it underground, cause the Chinese Revolution is going to make the Arab Spring look like "a light sprinkle with patches of sun".
Lets All welcome China to the face of Free Enterprise. You know the free enterprise without regulation.
Remember...As Myth Rmoney stated at his fundraising dinner, those fences and guard towers are there to keep people "OUT".
There you have it, Myth's "Vision for America" is the present day model in China.
I know for sure its the Koch Bros. vision.
FOXCONN CEO, TERRY GOU: "managing one million animals gives me a headache"
Major customers and partners of FOXCONN
Acer, Amazon.com, Apple, Cisco, Dell, HP, Intel, Nokia, Motorola, Vizio, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, Sharp, Toshiba, Vizio
If you in small part want to advance the rights of workers who are toiling away in slave like conditions and treated worse than 'animals' as admitted by the CEO himself, refrain buying from these companies and put some weight of publicity behind your choice. I don't see Lenovo, HTC, Samsung, LG, Canon, Panasonic, IBM, AMD, etc. in the list, maybe check whether they actually do something different. I doubt it, but FOXCONN is one of the worst, if not the worst in terms of worker abuses among OEM manufacturers of electronics.
Certainly for many these working conditions are far better than they are subject to at other China state run enterprises. So they are only too happy to suffer a milder form of tyranny to support themselves and their families in a higher standard. But as their knowledge of the outside world grows and their level of discontent rises they evolve and begin to organize their separate complaints. These so called riots might start with a few that are angry and morph into a general release of tension no doubt caused by long hours and a feeling of safety in numbers. Whatever their individual complaints two things are certain; Apple or Samsung or any of the companies that now trade cheap dollars for labor are not suddenly going to get religion and abandon their business plan and neither is China. So we will go on purchasing products made with "slave labor" and the laborers will also continue their learning curve toward greater economic parity. That parity is a long way off because there are millions in dire poverty just begging to have a chance to work at Foxconn. But history changes in an instant when it decides to and almost no one sees precisely how or when it will happen. If we let the market work eventually wages and conditions will improve. Im just glad I am free to purchase my GS3 and use it instead of wallowing in self guilt because some other poor soul hasn't been completely made whole according to someone else's standards.
Those should be American Jobs!
Nothing could be more true. BS little shareholders bluffed into thinking they have such a great deal. Pennies. What does that have to do with the lives of People, here and in China. And for every person there is a family. Families suffereing everywhere for your little handful of change.
Those should be American jobs.
We'll now, a little unrest in that great model "China". I once heard a prominent liberal from the NYT's say on meet the press "Oh if we could only be China for a day. Really, why do liberals love China so much, they break every labor and wage violation, pollute their people with smog and water pollution, sensor everything, and kill the 2nd baby a woman has......Really.....This is just like asking why American Liberal Jews hate Israel so much.
But let's get real here, the American non union, non civil service middle class has been taken for a ride since the early 1970's and is now on the brink of poverty in record numbers. The ruling class both democrat and republican has outsourced all of our jobs by creating these unfair trade agreements, telling you, no this is good for business and job creation...yeah right, why do you think so many people got on the cradle to grave government civil service job bandwagon in the 80's....because they were smarter than us public sector idiots and went for the security and pensions, but who knew 20 years later these jobs paid $130,000 and retirement after 20 - 25 years.... BUT that gravy train is over...anyway, what is a community policing center--that's for you Long Island people to ponder.
The issue here is that both Romney and Obama don't have a plan, there plans will never work because the horses are already out of the barn and aren't coming back. Liberal job creation equals high taxes, tolls, gas, food and everything else, republican job creation equals low wages, no health insurance, no social security and on and on.
It's time for a real 3rd party, devoid of the elite rich agenda driven on both sides, left and right.
Lean on Congress to pass the Legislation to Penalize Corporations for OUTsourcing and reward for hiring IN. This was tried in July but none of US knew about it. Try it again and tell them we know about the Solution!
Darn, its time Americans get alittle gumption like the Chinese. You obviously don't know how worse its going to get.

Would this be an iRiot? iGuess!
We have people trying to equate these riots at a Foxconn facility as "bad news for Mitt" and the truth is that the statement is idiotic at best. Others paint this as a "plus" for Obama which is another genuinely idiotic statement. Both Obama and Romney are on the SAME DAMN TEAM, the team that is driving this country to RUIN, the team that will have this country continue to fight illegal wars to support the Corporations that are making obscene profits supplying the logistical support and supplies to the machine that is the US Military. This Military that is intended as Security for the United States is being utilized as a private army to secure the profits that are sought after by these private corporations that DO NOT BENEFIT THE TAX PAYERS, but do COST THE LIVES OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE MILITARY THAT SOUGHT TO BE GOOD AMERICANS so the joined the services, only to be used by these leeches. The ONLY REAL SOLUTION IS A THIRD PARTY AS THE TWO PARTIES WE CURRENTLY HAVE ARE HOPELESSLY CORRUPT!
This is why the livings of so many Americans were SOLD to the Chinese Manufacturers, because the POLITICIANS WERE PAID TO ALLOW IT TO HAPPEN. If it weren't for these leeches in the two parties we would still be the great Nation we were prior to the SELL OFF. So DO NOT Buy into the Democratic and Republican party line of crap, they are as complicit and corrupt a single entity as can be had. They only portray an illusion of being separate and opposed to one in other, it is a game that they are playing to line their pockets and no more.
Without a THIRD PARTY THIS COUNTRY IS DOOMED to collapse and failure that will never really be recovered. We will be driven to wars that are un-win-able and at that I will stop and say that many of the commenter's here make the statement "history has shown us" and the fact is that history has shown that great societies that begin to falter and fail and sink into un-checked corruption ALL EVENTUALLY FADE INTO HISTORIES EXAMPLES OF FAILED FORMS OF GOVERNMENT and SOCIETY. That is where we are headed, the way of the Roman Empire, The Babylonians, The Greeks, The Soviets, etc. It will happen if we do not make a CHANGE and RETURN TO THE CONSTITUTIONAL IDEOLOGIES THAT MADE US GREAT.
Wow what a party, a real riot. When the police came, we had a gas. Brought down the house. woot!
Apple has more money than the U.S. government. There's something wrong with that.
It's so hilarious to see the pride of the liberal community using slave labor. But, even if they don't know it, that's where they came from.
Founded by old Andrew Jackson, and been puttin people in chains ever since. The method changes but the results are always the same. Slaves to the government enslaving the children of a tyrannical government. It's a divine comedy. A dance macabre. And liberals always provide the best body count.
Congratulations Apple! Well done. As California goes bankrupt from your vampire comrade's, you enslave others from a World away. <golf clap> Well done.
What was wrong with Andrew Jackson? He was anti-central bank, a frothing nationalist, and a small-government conservative. You guys should love him. Hell, if it wasn't for his support of ethnic cleansing I would like the guy also.
Read up on your history guy. Before FDR, the Republican party tended to be progressive and the Democrats conservative.
Agree about the hypocrisy, but it's hardly restricted to a single political faction. Fact is, not a single cell phone and very few electronics in general are manufactured in the United States. Unless you're Amish or actually support outsourcing, we're pretty much all hypocrites
Kind of reminds me of the labor riots we used to have in the U.S. and still do in some areas like coal mining. Check the situations in the 30's here in the states. And don't forget the troops being used to break up sit-ins by veterans after WW I, then having them shipped to the Fla. Keys where most of them died from a hurricane. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Right on dude
Yeh and these addicted kids to IPhones wonder why they cannot find a decent paying job for many. Like our country during Carnegie days and Teddy Roosevelt used his anti-trust law, you can only keep people down with slavery wages so long. You will not hear a damn thing from Obama or Romney on why we cannot get decent paying jobs. Over 5000 companies when to cheap labor countries and the factory will say they had enough someday. So stop your bitching about who is President. It makes no difference who is in office. Both them and Congress bought off with the money and corruption.
