Police: Suspect held over slayings of S. Carolina couple on Caribbean island of St. Maarten

PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten -- St. Maarten police on Sunday arrested a suspect in the slayings of a South Carolina couple whose slashed bodies were found in their beachfront condominium on the tiny Dutch Caribbean territory.

Police spokesman Ricardo Henson said the male suspect was arrested before dawn Sunday and has not been charged yet.

Citing the territory's privacy rules, Henson declined to give further details about the suspect, saying police will issue a statement "as soon as more information can be divulged."

The bodies of Michael and Thelma King were found Friday in their condominium at the Ocean Club Resort on St. Maarten, a 16-square-mile territory with about 50,000 inhabitants that shares a small island with the French dependency of St. Martin.

Tied to a chair
Chief Prosecutor Hans Mos said both Americans appeared to have suffered fatal stab wounds. The woman was found tied to a chair, and the man was lying on the floor, partially over an overturned chair. Both were in their 50s.

Autopsies were expected to be conducted Monday, according to Mos. Relatives of the slain couple have arrived in the territory.

Friends said the Kings were part-time residents of St. Maarten and owned several homes. They also owned a condominium in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Watch video from NBC station WCBD:

Terry Tamblyn, a resident of South Carolina's coastal city of Isle of Palms, told The Post and Courier newspaper that King was a retired insurance executive who later started a successful printing business that he sold. He said King also owned a couple of restaurants on St. Maarten.

Local restaurant owner Topper Daboul has told The Associated Press that he and Michael King were building a rum factory together on the territory.

'Pains everyone'
Daboul said he last saw King on Wednesday afternoon and "some other friends had drinks with them that night."

He said he wasn't able to reach the Kings on the phone Thursday so he drove to their house the next day and banged on the door. He said he asked a person on the premises to climb over a fence to see if anyone was in the house.

Daboul said the person reported a lifeless man leaning over a chair inside the house.

Shortly after the slayings were announced, the St. Maarten government said "every government resource is being brought into play to investigate and solve this case."

Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams said she was "shocked" by the murders.

Police said roughly 25 officers were part of the investigative team.

The St. Maarten Hospitality & Trade Association said it's outraged by the murders, which "pains everyone in the community deeply."

St Maarten is a safe place. This is unfortunate. But to be honest, no place is entirely safe. Hell, they have robberies and murders in gated, security patrolled communities here in the usa. Every place you take a vacation is potentially dangerous. THUGS and criminals watch. They know when you are not part of the..regular scenary. A man tried to rob me and my wife when we visited the Philippines 5 yrs ago. Luckily for me, I am a master of martial arts. I took him down so fast, even he was shocked!!!! The cops roughed him up pretty bad. You see, there is no such thing as..police brutality in most countries.

The problem is that the "Perception" throughout the world is that you can kill Americans, kidnap Americans, rob Americans, rape Americans, and nothing will happen to you.

#1 dissolve all relations with foreign governments that will not sign a extradition treaty with the USA. That especially includes ISRAEL.

#2 Cut off ALL AID to foreign governments that will not sign extradition treaties with the USA.

#3 Inform all governments that we hold THEM ultimately liable for any harm that comes to our citizens. Make harming Americans very very expensive.

#4 Invade Mexico, kick ass, take names, install true democratic government. Summarily execute all drug traffickers.

#5 Open up Mexico's huge oil fields and build pipeline to the USA. There is nothing wrong with that oil, its just like west texas crude.

#6 Enforce new tax code that severely penalizes ALL mexican families that have members illegally in the USA.

Not working out so well - that always trying to reason everything using American culture. I'm sure every other country loses lots of sleep thinking; if only we thought like Americans.

I've been on a Caribbean cruise where Americans got off the ship wearing all kinds of pro American clothing - and you wonder why the get targeted? How many poor people in these places really enjoy watching a bunch of rich folks come in and take advantage of their homeland. Rain-forests, tropical islands, resorts. ETC. of course they are going to be victims sooner or later. Look at all the muslims and asians coming to America taking over whole neighborhoods, stores, jobs, etc. Just makes me sick. Ok honestly, most of the tourist areas in Mexico are absolutely fine, and cheaper now too. The violence is focused in the border areas, the "corridors" used for drug trafficking and human smuggling. If you go to Cabo, or Queretaro, or Cancun, you'll be fine.

Source: A guy who's lived in the border towns of Mexico for years, married a girl from Matamoros, and we haven't been able to go back to see her family for years because of the insane violence.

Just remember, judging the whole country is kind of like saying you wouldn't want to vacation in San Diego because you've heard that Detroit has a lot of violence.

However, since I am from Vancouver, British Columbia, I do have to agree with Abby and say that I would still prefer BC... gorgeous, simply gorgeous. Depends what you're looking for, you want amazing snowboarding, go to BC, you want great beaches, go to Cancun.

Amazing snowboarding, amazing wakeboarding, great beaches, great hiking and mountain biking, and at the right time of year you can do them all in the same day in Lake Tahoe.

You never hear about any violence near tourist areas because it isn't reported. I was in the Yucatan in 2007. The tour guide said on occasion the buses are stopped and everyone on board is robbed blind. Ever read about that in the papers?

        http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=1539990

Odds of it happening may be slim, but no thanks. Plenty of other safer places to take the family than anywhere in Mexico.

Whipsplash, just got back from a vacation in Tahoe, it was fantastic. I live in southern CA right now, so I typically will head up to Tahoe or Mammoth for my boarding needs, but I still have to get up to Whistler once in a while to get my fix.

HS - Yes, I did actually read about that occasion. Since we're on a story about being murder and mayhem in St. Maarten (playground of rich and famous), I think we'll all agree that there is no such thing as a "perfect paradise" and bad things can happen anywhere.

My statement was simply that the majority of tourist areas of Mexico do not have the level of violence and mayhem that are in the cartel battlegrounds. Remember, the cartels like to operate under the radar, when possible. They typically stay away from touristy areas and curious eyes. Again, Cancun, Cabo, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and another gorgeous areas haven't been touched by the violence that we hear so much about in the battleground areas.

        and don't call me Shirley.

Sorry, all that's been said is that not every area of Mexico is dangerous, just not every area of the US is as dangerous as Chicago or Detroit.

Getmad, you're kind of an idiot. You do realize that the robber/rapist/murderer rate is considerably higher in the US, also known as the largest jailer in the world, right?

I have to go with the grilledcheesesandwich. On my first and last trip to St. Maarten, the cab driver ripped us off and I was propositioned to buy cocaine in front of the courthouse in Philipsburg. Never again. The poverty there is overwhelming, and I imagine that it has gotten worse since I was there, not better. If I want to get my Caribe vibe on, its off to the USVI, St. Thomas and St. John. Still some poverty there, too, but the U.S. government subsidizes the area more significantly than the Dutch do St. Maarten. Never had a bad trip to the USVI.

American Girl I agree. Maui is one of the most beuatiful places on this planet and it is very safe. I have been there numerous times and will always bee the first place I return to for vacation. Yes the plane ride stinks from the east coast but it is well worth it. While Maui does have crime it is not wide spread and the most that would happen would be getting riped off for herb or having something stolen from your car. I advise anyone that has the chance to goto Maui that they take it. While it may cost more than many of the carb islands it blows all of them away in beauty and things to do

St Maarten looks awesome from the cruise boat. We went back and actually stayed for a week on this Dutch side. The island itself beyond the resorts is seedy and you feel like prey. I would stay in a mobile home in 8 mile Detroit before I wasted 5 grand on that island again. Pass.......

We have been on the island about 5x in the last 10 years. Admittedly there are a few areas that anyone would consider "rough", but overall its an amazingly beautiful place, with great beaches and nice spots on both the Dutch and the French side of the island that are very safe.

As for the murder, it of course makes me sad that this would happen in a place like this, but if you look at the story in the Daily Herald (the local SXM paper) it appears that there is something more going on than a simple robbery gone (really) bad.

totally agree there is more to it.. the guy was doing business and perhaps one side was unhappy. doesn't make it right.. who knows.. he could have had a hostile employee. i have been to the island many times, and it is somewhat uncharacteristic. does seem like there is more to it.

what catches me is he was building a rum factory, etc...

Could be he also did not want to give up the cash. Home invasion is a massive problem on that Island. I could also just be a straight up murder though. It appears now you are not safe anywhere on that island

St. Maarten has now surpassed much of the world when it comes to murder per
capita. And if you don't believe this you are a deluded fool. Some facts will
set you straight. According to the World Bank, our murder rate in 2004 was an
astonishing 47 per 100,000. To put things in perspective, Japan has a murder
rate of around 0.83 per 100,000 people. And it has a population of 130 million
                      people!

                      Shady or Shoddy?

Also, it just sounds like a well-to-do American couple who lived on the islands, were well known on the islands (owned several restaurants, building rum factory, etc), who word got out probably had money stashed in their home, and they got cut up for the cash.

I didn't see anything in the article that looks like they were involved in drugs, or any other kinds of (Shoddy?)(Shady?) deals.

20 years ago I spent a week in St. Croix. (U.S. Virgin Islands). Driving around the island, I felt like I was in the middle of a crack ghetto. We were warned by some of the locals to always watch our backs & possessions. We went there to scuba dive & that was awesome. But unemployment & drugs have destroyed what could have been a beautiful place.

St. Maarten – Though they’ve spotted a “definite decrease in crime in general” the Police Force of St. Maarten has observed an increase in “serious violent criminal acts.” This point was stressed in a presentation to Parliament by Head of the police’s Judicial Department Commissioner Denise Jacobs that included figures and comparisons from the first half of 2011 (January to June) versus the first half of 2010 (January to June).

“The serious forms of criminality (offences against human life and robberies with use of grave/ serious force) are on the rise and the lighter forms of criminality are declining,” Jacobs said.

I always find it funny when people like wryobsever are cool with people dying as long as they were rich. Sorry about your own failings in life.

Sounds like a hit to me. Maybe some local business owner didn't want them to keep growing their business.

Like Asians and muslims coming to America, taking over our neighborhoods, jobs, stores, then trying to show their a$$es. ( not so much the asians, they don't have much a$$).

I know it sounds anal but when friends mention a cruise to the Caribbean or the like, I always mention the beautiful beaches we have right here in the US. You want tropical, try Key West or exotic, try Hawaii. This is not even including the miles of beaches between Texas to Florida and the East and Weat coasts. I say keep our money in the US and keep our people working. Other courtries have gotten out of hand with their internal drug wars and the politics making it a dangerous place to "wander off" the tourist trap areas.

I understand the point about economics. I do like traveling everywhere, including the U.S., though. I think it is good to be exposed to different ideas, different cultures, and different wonders. One should always strive to be safe though. (St. Maarten is generally safe) I would love to see some sights in the Middle East, but I just won't risk the dangers. I try not to drop too much (money) overseas. I'll spend on restaurants, lodging and touring, but I try to limit other purchases.

There's a whole big, wide world out there. Tis a bit narrow-minded to limit your exposure to only your home country.

We could all live in plastic bubbles if we wanted nothing more than to simply remain safe. Life is an adventure. You have to go out and experience the world in order to understand it.

I lived in St. Kitts for almost three years. I visited St. Maarten multiple times. The people in the Caribbean are wonderful and the islands are beautiful. I plan to retire in the Caribbean one day.

I've been to St. Kitts & thought it was horrible. Some of the worst poverty I'd ever seen on an island, and I've been to more than a few of them. The government is among the most corrupt in the entire Caribbean and the residents made no effort whatsoever to hide their resentment of "rich" tourists (and in their eyes that means every single tourist on the island.) We never felt safe at all. As I said, I've been all over the Caribbean and never felt threatened the way I did on St. Kitts. We were at a casino one night when the securty guard told us that someone had just been robbed at gunpoint right outside the casino - and this was around 9pm. Our terrible experience culminated with me being stalked by a young local on a quiet stretch of beach in broad daylight RIGHT NEXT TO OUR HOTEL and the only timely intervention of our hotel's manager saved me from what could have been a truly terrible experience.

I would never consider going back to that cesspool.

I was in St. Kitts around 25 yrs ago it seemed fine to me but the food wasn't very good. Now after living in the Fl Keys for a yr I felt safer in St. Kitts.

This was about 22 years ago, and by all accounts, it's only gotten worse since than. We constantly got the "hard stare" and this even though my husband I were very young at the time. dressed very casually, not wearing flashy jewelry, etc. Just driving around the island we got the cold stares and it was very disconcerting. Throw in the other bad experiences we had there (and yes even the bad food) and we just wouldn't even consider spending the time or money to go back there again.

And no, I haven't been to Port Au Prince. I try to go to NICE places, not places that are going to depress the hell out of me. I've been to Grand Cayman, Turks and Caicos, St. John. St. Thomas, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda (I know, not technically the Caribbean) and St. Kitts was the only one I said I would never go back to, and I never will.
