President Obama tells the United Nations General Assembly that the US will "do what we must" to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.
Updated at 12:05 p.m. ET: Barack Obama told the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday that the United States will "do what we must" to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons.
The president also used the high-profile event to commemorate late Ambassador Christopher Stevens, who was slain with three other Americans when the U.S. consulate in Bengazi, Libya, came under attack Sept. 11.
"There are no words that excuse the killing of innocent" people and "no video that justifies an attack on an embassy," Obama told the General Assembly.
He stressed that recent violence should not been seen simply as attacks on America.

"They are also an assault on the very ideals upon which the United Nations was founded -- the notion that people can resolve their differences peacefully, that diplomacy can take the place of war, that in an interdependent world, all of us have a stake in working towards greater opportunity and security for our citizens," he said.
'Time is not unlimited'
On Iran, Obama said that while there was still time for a diplomatic solution to the crisis that "time is not unlimited."
U.S. officials reportedly suspect Iran is behind a string of recent cyber attacks that were aimed at major U.S. banks. Jim Finkle of Reuters has more on the story.
Amid mounting tensions over Iran's nuclear program and talk of a military strike by Israel on Iran, Obama has refused demands from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to set an explicit "red line" for Tehran.
Netanyahu has shown growing impatience over Obama's entreaties to hold off on attacking Iran's nuclear sites to give sanctions and diplomacy more time to work.
Underscoring the depth of the problem, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in New York on Monday that Israel has no roots in the Middle East and would be "eliminated," ignoring a U.N. warning to avoid his usual incendiary rhetoric ahead of the annual General Assembly session. Iran denies seeking a nuclear bomb.
Obama said that the U.S. wanted to find a peaceful solution to the problem and believed "that there is still time and space to do so."
“But that time is not unlimited. We respect the right of nations to access peaceful nuclear power, but one of the purposes of the United Nations is to see that we harness that power for peace,” he said.
“Make no mistake: A nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained. It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations, and the stability of the global economy. It risks triggering a nuclear-arms race in the region, and the unraveling of the non-proliferation treaty,” he said.
“That’s why a coalition of countries is holding the Iranian government accountable. And that’s why the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,” he added.

Speaking Tuesday to the General Assembly, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he rejected threats of military action by one state against another, an apparent reference to recent comments by Israeli, Iranian and U.S. officials.
While he did not specify which countries he was talking about, Ban added, "I also reject both the language of delegitimization and threats of potential military action by one state against another. Any such attacks would be devastating."
With exactly six weeks to go before the U.S. election, Obama will seek to reassure American voters as well as world leaders that they can count on him to handle the latest global challenges, even as Republican challenger Mitt Romney seizes the chance to pan his foreign policy.

With campaign pressures building in a close race, Obama's final turn on the world stage before facing voters has left little doubt about his immediate priorities.

He skipped the customary one-on-one meetings with foreign counterparts but went ahead with the taping of a campaign-style appearance on the popular television talk show "The View" -- a tradeoff that drew Republican criticism.
Obama planned to be in and out of New York in 24 hours, one of the briefest presidential visits to the annual U.N. session in recent memory, and he will be off to the election battleground state of Ohio on Wednesday.
'Disgusting' video
Obama also discussed the attacks on U.S. embassies and consulates -- including the one that killed Stevens -- amid outrage over a California-made film that mocked the Prophet Muhammad.
"Today we must reaffirm that our future will be determined by people like Chris Stevens, and not by his killers. Today we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United Nations," Obama said.
He described the video that sparked the violence, "Innocence of Muslims," as "crude and disgusting" and an insult "not only to Muslims, but to America as well," but defended America's stance on freedom of speech.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discusses the "danger of not acting" in the era of a potentially nuclear-armed Iran.
"I know there are some who ask why we don't just ban such a video. The answer is enshrined in our laws: Our Constitution protects the right to practice free speech," he said.
"Here in the United States, countless publications provoke offense. Like me, the majority of Americans are Christian, and yet we do not ban blasphemy against our most sacred beliefs. As president of our country, and commander-in-chief of our military, I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day, and I will always defend their right to do so," he added.

Obama also took Bashar Assad to task for the Syrian president's efforts to crush an 18-month uprising against his regime.
"The future must not belong to a dictator who massacres his people. If there is a cause that cries out for protest in the world today, peaceful protest, it is a regime that tortures children and shoots rockets at apartment buildings," he said.
"And we must remain engaged to assure that what began with citizens demanding their rights does not end in a cycle of sectarian violence," he added.
The unsettled climate surrounding Obama's U.N. visit was a stark reminder that the heady optimism that greeted him when he took office promising to be a transformational statesman has cooled.

Campaigning in Colorado, Romney argued that the United States should not be "at the mercy" of events in the Muslim world. "We want a president who will shape events in the Middle East," he said.
A Pew poll found that while 45 percent of Americans approved of Obama's handling of the attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions in the Muslim world, only 26 percent backed Romney's criticism of his response.

When the Iranians send nuclear-tipped rockets to Israel, they will not only be trying to kill thousands and thousands of innocent civilians, they will be destroying a land that includes the birthplace of Jesus, the Via Dolorosa, the Church of the Holy Sepuchre and other holy places revered by Christians. Respond,what are you going to say when the Iranians or their attack dogs, Hezbollah, set of a nuclear device in Israel? Remember, they have been threatening for years to wipe Israel off the map. America won't be the country to push the 'red' button--it will be Israel just like it did in Iraq to wipe out their nuclear plant and in Syria to wipe out a nuclear weapons factory (identical to North Korea's). Israel is backed into a corner and leave no doubt that to destroy the underground facilities that Iran has constructed it will have no choice but to resort to using it's own store of nuclear weapons to 'dig' them out.
That means at least 5 to 10 nuclear bunker busters detonated one after another on top of each other to dig down 2000 feet--each 5 megaton bunker buster can easily dig a 500 ft crated if detonated below the surface. And that's what Israel will do within a few months.
Which will set the entire Muslim world into a furious protest and set Sunni's versus Shiites at holy war within themselves and jihad against all other religions.
Which is exactly what Iran is counting on--it knows either way it wins.
And Israel knows either way it loses.
And either way the United Nations will cease to exist.

He does know he has a few more appearances on daytime talk shows, Entertainment Tonight, an in depth interview with US magazine, and a photo shoot with People. Although word has it if Israel takes the survival of their country in their own hands he's ready with a plethora of apologizes.
Iran attacking Israel first would be the best thing that could happen, because it means we could engage them without having to contend with Russia or China. Iran knows this, so they blow a lot of smoke.
The problem with attacking Iran first (bomb or no bomb) is that we'll have China and Russia on our backs because they buy oil from Iran. I don't think people realize the serious implications of attacking first. It could lead to World War 3. Iran also knows this, which is why they're trying to goad Israel and the west into attacking them.
It's the for similar reasons we just haven't bombed the piss out of North Korea, and why North Korea won't attack first.

Nuclear bombs require 90% enrichment and Iran is only enriching it to 20%, which is long way off. If there is to be a red line, it should be whenever, if ever, Iran kicks out the IAEA inspectors. It's just so weird how quickly people jump on Romney for saying "If necessary we will take military action to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons", but when it's Obama it's "I hope we can resolve this peacefully without war".
Military action isn't always war. Sometimes it's commando style sabotage where a team of infiltrators goes in, destroys the data and the prototype, or takes the prototype. You may recall we did this with WW2 and why the United States developed nukes in the first place, given that Germany was approximately 2 weeks from having the Bomb themselves. When our infiltrators were done, Germany was set back easily six months worth of work and research and we had their research team. That effectively stopped them until the end of the war, at which point Germany was divided between the Allied Powers and Russia for the grand test of Capitalism vs. Communism. This is otherwise known as "The Cold War", which ended when the USSR collapsed and adopted Capitalism. Now Russia's doing pretty damn well while the US seems to be adopting Communism despite having clearly seen it fail in a bigger nation with more people AND more industry. We have very little industry here - are we going to survive by eating grass and dirt and dirty underwear?

Since Obama was elected we've lost 36 million more jobs overseas as companies pull out of the hostile environment that is the so-called "Land of Opportunity". Since Obama was elected our country has fallen into a divided mass of ignorant people who celebrate mediocrity and think freaks and trashy women who get famous from making amateur porn videos are who they should get their opinions from. Since Obama was elected we've had 5 versions of the iPhone and people seem to think the economy runs solely off the sales of them. Meanwhile all 5 versions are virtually the same, just like all 5 versions of the Escalade. Ooo, one has leather seats - big deal.
We're rapidly becoming a nation of petty idiots when we used to be the most enlightened nation in the world. Democracy was born in America while the rest of the world served kings and priests because they had no choice. He's half-white and we have five different versions of his birth certificate to go by on that fact. There's nothing racist about not supporting him and there never was. It's okay to admit that he's not the finest president to ever jauntily hop up to the podium and read from a teleprompter or go on 60 Minutes or rub knees with The View. He's not a superstar except in his mediocrity and his ability to sling insults at people, and in telling lies that are very convincing but have no facts to support them. From your postings it's obvious you are strong supporter of Iran, which means you are either an Iranian government supporter, or an ignorant Muslim who does not see the danger in ending the nuclear non proliferation treaty. More than 12 countries already publicly stated that if Iran gets the bomb, they will hurry up and get it too. And guess what, if that happens, almost every country in the world will make it a priority to get the bomb.
So make no mistake, if Iran gets the bomb, it will ultimately result in every country and eventually every terrorist group getting the bomb. Is that the kind of world we want? From the infromation in the Romneys' 2011 tax returns we know that Romney invested in CNOOC in 2009 and purchased more shares twice that we know of, & sold, at least those, shares on Aug 11, 2011. This was in a "blind" trust which Mitt Romney now says he has no control over. However, a much younger Romney said: "The blind trust is an age-old ruse, if you will, which is to say, you can always tell a blind trust what it can and cannot do. You give a blind trust rules." And then, when the Trustee of your "blind" trust is also you personal attorney with whom you have attorney-client privilege .....

These people want to see the death and destruction of the US and Israel. They do not care if they target civilians or not, and if they die for their cause, they view their sacrifice as martyrdom. Good luck negotiating with people like that. As to your point about trying sanctions, our country tried that against Iraq before going to war. The only people who suffered were the average people in the country. All of the upper echelons of the regime were not even affected. Sanctions were not as effective as you think.

Does anyone seriously think Obama has the backbone to do what is necessary to prevent the Iranian crazies from developing nuclear weapons?
Sanctions, however severe, will accomplish nothing because we're dealing with fanatics that would consider any crippling effects to be an acceptable trade off, but what they fear most is military intervention that would damage or destroy their nuclear research infrastructure, which is why they always bellow about retaliation if such strikes occur.
I am aware of a sizable number of people that don't want another war on their hands (myself included) but I've concluded that war with Iran is almost inevitable. If this conclusion is correct, it's better to wage this war now rather than later. After all, wouldn't we rather fight a war with Iran now with conventional weapons or wait until they develop their nuclear capability? They've already got the missiles, they only need the warheads.
Obama and his UN buddies will continue their procrastinations hoping that these sanctions will somehow force the Iranian crazies to abandon their nuclear aspirations. If this fails, Obama will fall back on a tried and true strategy. He'll just blame others for allowing the Iranians to get nukes.
If the Iranians get nukes, the world will have changed forever, and not in a good way.

As an undecided, I have made an effort to listen to both sides so that when I cast my vote, I will feel as though I did my best to make an informed and responsible decision. First, I trust the president with foreign policy anyday over Romney. I never doubted that, but after I heard Romney say we all ready have a system in place to care for those who don't have health coverage, I thought I would fall over. When he used the example of a man who has a heart attack will be picked up at his "apartment" by ambulance and driven to the hospital and will recieve treatment as his idea of adequte health care for Americans, I realized just how out of touch he is. What about healthcare maintenance to decrease the likelihood of the crisis in the first place. Steve, Wouldn't that be cheaper for Americans overall? Second, the fact that Ryan wants to do away with Pell Grants is insane. That's how I went to college as a single mom with three kids. That is the reason I was able to establish a career and become a contributing member of society. These guys (Romney/Ryan) are scary! I could not vote for Romney in good conscious.

Republican presidents do. The military has more job security with a Republican vs. a Democrat, and this creates a problem where our military will vote for a candidate just because of his party instead of picking the right person for the job.
