I travel to Libya several times each year since about 1997. I have many good friends there, but I lost some during the fake revoke staged by Iran. I was there in early August of this year and I was warned about the Protests planned for 11th September. The attacks were will known to happen on the 11th. I cannot believe the Obama Administration did know of this, they had to know about it. It is if they wanted it to happen for political reasons.

The Obama Administration knew about the potential for an attack, but did nothing to safeguard the USA Embassy or its staff.

There is a heightened alert every Sept. 11th. Where is this coming from that there wasn't? The amount of misinformation and outright lies is overwhelming. Why care about pesky things like truth when you can make up whatever story you want in your head and make it true?

Second, every single person posted in a different country understands the risks of their post. The private security officers were former SEALs, they obviously understood the risks. It is terrible what happened, but is it really that surprising? No. The people who work in embassies understand they have a job to do and they willingly do it. The host country is supposed to guarantee their safety, but with governments changing right and left, it is a recipe for something bad to happen. The consideration should be to pull the embassies all together in those countries until they are stable.

Third, Obama. I have a hard time believing that every single person in the White House or not didn't know what was going on. The terrorists on 9/11/2001 won, people. They got a response and a holy war to point to for validation. Every time we respond with force against a terrorist attack, the holy war continues. For that to happen, we need robust science and math education to foster new ideas and technology. We need money to switch to green industries. I'm not for responding with significant force (like Iraq or Afghanistan), but I do advocate a response that reduces the future threat of these types of attacks. For me, that means stepped up covert activities, infiltrating these groups, and convincing the Muslim world that we are not attacking their religion in general - only the extremist elements that will ultimately kill anyone (including Muslims) that do not believe in their exact interpretation of Islam.

As I said in my other post - in order to deal with a problem, one of the fist steps is to accurately state what the problem is. In this case, it's violent, militant, fundamentalist Muslims. It's not all, or even a large percentage of Muslims, and it's not a general "problem" with Islam.

Totally agree, Randy. Every time we get involved, we make the situation worse for both ourselves and the local people. I agree that a full-scale military response is what the terrorists want, and something we should not provide. However, I don't understand why we even had anyone at this embassy on the 9/11 anniversary. My understanding is, this "embassy" is basically just a home in a neighborhood - and it wasn't defensible against any type of coordinated attack. Add to that, the comments from Libya that they told the US something was likely to happen on 9/11, and it seems the administration made some serious mistakes - both in Libya and in other ME countries.

Hopefully they've learned some hard lessons and will be better prepared for the next set of attacks.

The Middle East isn't ready for democracy. Egypt proved that the "nuts will run the Asylum" (Muslim Brotherhood) if they are given democracy. Afghanistan just shows how corrupt they are. People need to know the truth about another scenario. The US was hit with a terrorist attack at the Ft. Hood base in Texas in 2009. Somehow Obama and his team were able to convince the media not to report it as such. The witnesses at the base said that the shooter said Allah is great right before he started to spray his bullets.

We just bombed the crap out of how many countries, killing and maiming countless innocent people. I use an analogy with Westboro church... most people I know don't think if them as Christians, but they claim to be so it's a good comparison, but imagine if they did something like bomb a Saudi palace. The Saudis retaliate and bomb Washington for allowing such radicals to exist within their confines. How would we feel as Americans, possibly as Christians? I use this just as an analogy, but radicals exist everywhere, and you cannot control them. Would the Saudi King be responsible for our crazies? Are we responsible for our crazies? The truth is not mutually exclusive as the right wing seem to be latching onto for attacks. More that one thing can be true at the same time.

Although the consulate attack is now confirmed as a premeditated attack, both protests because of the anniversary of 9/11 and reactions to the anti-Islam film trailer contributed to impromptu uprisings at the consulate and in many other places. The consulate was more of a perfect storm with all of them together.

The administration has consistently been dealing with terrorist attacks with the best intelligence we have. Bengazzi slipped through, but more Al Queida and terrorists have been killed through drone attacks and more interventions to disrupt terror networks occurred under the Obama administration than in the entire Bush administration. Check the numbers. Bush was obsessed with Iraq and not very much with Bin Laden or Al Queida. Obama took out Bin Laden, and the second in command, and many other high level Al Queida leaders. Responses to the terrorist attack are already in play and covert operations are not publicized.

The reactions to the film trailer are something that we, however, can address publicly. In the Arab world, the assumption is that no action like this by their citizens would be allowed to be released without the sanction of the government. We need to make them understand both that not only was the U.S. government not a party to this, but how our system of liberty prevents our form of government from censuring things it doesn't condone under free speech freedoms.

I see nothing inconsistent with the government making it known that although we don't condone the content and as a country respect all faiths, that individuals can speak on their own behalf under freedom of speech and disagree with the government stance, while we pursue the existing actions against terrorism that have been our foreign policy for the last decade.

Peace in that part of the world is elusive and very hard to work for, but that has always and rightly been our goal. The last thing we need now or at any time is a new President who is already on record that peace is not even an achievable goal. Governor Romney has told us more about what he has already given up on (on the middle east, the 47%, and the average working American) than what he believes is achievable other than through vague statements of jingoism and campaign sound bytes.

We know what Obama stands for and it's a foreign policy that other than this rash of recent outbursts, has had good success. Nobody, including his campaign or respected conservative pundits, can agree on where Romney stands on this or anything else other than just wanting the job. I know several dyed in the wool Republicans who had confided that they cannot in good conscience vote for Romney and don't know how they will vote (Stay home, Obama, or third party) for the presidential line.

I largely agree with your points. It's like I used to tell my conservative friends about Iraq when it was looking like a quagmire. If China took over the US to "help the people", even if the Chinese thought it was best for the average American, I would fight them as hard as I could until we forced them to leave. Their intent wouldn't matter to me - the only thing that would matter is to force the invading troops to leave my country. Every time an American died, it would just reinforce my resolve to force them out.

As to the use of force in the ME in general, that's why I advocate basically a black ops style approach with an emphasis on infiltration and taking out the leadership in the terrorist organizations. I would also continue to go after the money - if the terrorists have no money, they will not be very effective.

If they ever do anything brazen again like open training camps, I'm ok with taking those out as well. But, I don't think the current drone strategy is the best approach. Yes, it's gotten us some nice "trophy kills", but as you pointed out, it just creates a never ending cycle of violence.

What exactly would you have suggested that the US do in regard to the popular uprisings in Libya and Egypt?

Because as far as I see, you have 3 options. 1. Assist the Regime 2. Do nothing 3. Assist the Rebels

1. Doing number 1 would fulfill the anti-american narrative that the US is not interested in spreading democracy; but is actually only interested in propping up puppet dictators for oil. That narrative does indeed have a lot of historical support - but it totally undermines what the US's narrative is regarding our current involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. So - assisting the regime would fundamentally undermine the US mission in Iraq and Afghanistan.

2. Do nothing - this would guarantee a long, proctracted period of strife in oil exporting Libya and Suez Canal controlling Egypt. This is bad for the oil market.... and VERY bad if a long period of strife results in another blockage in the Suez .

3. Assist the rebels - although the potential of a theocratic and potentially anti-American government is high.... it would fulfill US narrative of 'democratic support', build ties and influence within the new regime, and bring a quick end to the economically harmful effects of rebellion.

I believe Mr Obama & his Administration owe the American people an honest answer of what really transpired/occurred in Libya on 11 September, Benghazi in particular. A full accounting will allow the people to understand facts rather than rumor or "this is the most current information I was told to say..." ala Jay Carney, Administration spokesperson.

The Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice looked and sounded foolish by telling the "party line" after the President of Libya has said, in no uncertain terms, that the video was not the cause for what happened to Ambassador Stevens and the 5 persons killed (3 aides + 2 Marines).

The answers should not be construed for "damage control" just because we are approximately 40 days from the presidential election. Give us the true factual information and let the voters make the decision.

It would take hours of tactical training to show you how the Embassy in Libya was likely indefensible. As to why the guards were not "armed", likely because it would lead to escalation of hostilities. It's basically a couple of houses in a neighborhood. It isn't the movies or the wild wild west. Bullets go through walls, mortars level buildings, things burn. You can't fight a whole country from a small building and that's what would happen if things got out of hand. Al-queda would claims we were shooting at innocent civillians or some other BS. It's not a smart thing to do in a country where everyone just fought a civil war and are fairly well armed. It would be worse than Somalia in 1991 if Marines were brought in to do anything other than get people the hell out. They knew the location of the "safe" house because as many other articles have pointed out it's a small unfortified building that foreigners were seen constantly leaving. Not hard to track foreigners in Libya, it's like finding an Albino at the Apollo, you will notice. Until I see some proof that the Administration had concrete proof of an attack and not just intel on demonstrations then I'll be convinced. It's still not as bad a @!$%# up as Bush and Condi both being told by the CIA that 9/11 was coming as early as April 2001 if it is true.
