Israelis are prepared -- or not -- for an Iran attack

TEL AVIV – Did you know:

See our full coverage on international hot spots crucial to U.S. foreign policy ahead of elections in our At the Brink series here. And on Sunday, Sept. 30, and Monday, Oct. 1, tune into special coverage on all NBC News platforms from NBC's team of anchors and correspondents deployed in five countries across the region.
  • If a bomb explodes near you with a little bang, that's a sign it is carrying chemical or biological weapons? A loud bang means a conventional warhead.
  • If an attack is chemical, you will know right away? But if it's biological you'll only find out after a few days.
  • If it is nuclear, you should lie down and cover your head? And don't get up when the first blast wave passes over you because it will be followed by a second wave.

Useful, eh?

All these facts are good to know if you are in Israel and war with Iran, and its proxies Hezbollah and Hamas, were to break out around you.

Report: Iran mulls 'pre-emptive attack' against Israel; commander warns of 'World War III'

Or if something happened with Syria, Iran's ally, which has large stockpiles of biological and conventional weapons.

With the latest opinion polls showing that half of Israelis fear for the continued existence of their state if war breaks out with Iran, and with more than half rating the chance of such a war within a year as "medium" or "high,” the more you know about what the war would entail, the better.

Here are some more facts:

  • If you suck a bead made of castor oil, it could kill you. It contains ricin, a lethal poison.
  • After Chernobyl, it took 25 years before Welsh sheep could be eaten because the nuclear radiation settled over Wales as it drifted most of the way round the world.
  • And cigarettes contain polonium 210, the poison used to murder the Soviet ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko.

Probably no country in the world is as prepared as Israel for such an attack, with every home built in the last 21 years possessing a mandatory bomb shelter. City centers have vast public shelters with special rooms set up for non-conventional attacks. And citizens are instructed in how to protect their bomb shelters against chemical and biological warfare.

Mistakes happen
But mistakes can happen, as I can personally attest.

One evening in the winter of 1991 during the first Gulf War, with Iraqi Scud missiles rocketing over Jordan toward Israel, the bomb alarm sounded. My family quickly locked themselves in our bomb shelter, and I raced through the dark, silent streets to broadcast from our NBC News studio.

Israel's Netanyahu: Draw 'clear red line' to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons

This had become routine. I spent all night in the studio, responding to the many alarms, and went home around 5a.m. I didn't check on the family because I knew where the Scuds had fallen and none were near my home.

This one time, however, with 30 minutes to go before my next live broadcast hit, I had a sense that something was wrong. For the first time after an attack, I called home to see how my wife and my three sons, all aged below six, were faring.

In an attempt to convey what he sees as a threat to Israel's existence, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used a cartoon to illustrate how close he says Iran is to developing a nuclear weapon. In a speech at the United Nations General Assembly he asked the world to help stop them. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

No answer. I called again. No answer. Twenty-five minutes to go before my next “live hit” on TV with Tom Brokaw. I felt sick with worry. What could have happened?

I ran downstairs, jumped into my car and raced home. I figured a 10-minute drive, five minutes at home and 10 minutes back, I'd be in the studio with seconds to spare.

Life-saving decision
Ends up, because of that calculation, I saved my family's lives.

When the all-clear sounded, my wife, our three sons, my sister-in-law and the dog, a schnauzer called Tofi, couldn't get out of the shelter.

The heavy steel lock would not budge. They hung on it and pulled and tried and tried but could not open the door. When I arrived home, about two hours after they had entered the bomb shelter, I heard faint cries of "help, help."

Instead of pushing the handle up, they had been pulling it down, locking it instead of opening it.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tells the UN general assembly Thursday that sanctions are not stopping Iran's nuclear program.

I was able to open the door from the outside and all was well.

But if I had stuck to my usual routine and not called home and just returned at 5 a.m., after leaving them at 8 p.m. the night before, they would have been dead.

It's simple math: An adult breathes about one cubic meter of air per hour, children more. Five people in a small room of about nine cubic meters would begin to lose air after two hours. Seven hours? They'd have all been dead.

A miracle? Sixth sense? Whatever, it's a warning of what can go wrong in times of stress. And however prepared Israelis are for what awaits them, accidents happen. When Iraq attacked Israel in 1991, far more people died of heart attacks than Scud rockets.

Country on edge
Since that time, every apartment built in Israel must have a blast-proof room that protects citizens from conventional blasts and also, with plastic and tape, can protect against chemical and biological weapons too. Walls and doors are approximately 8-12 inches thick and doors and windows are airtight.

Every citizen has, in theory, a gas mask. In practice, there aren't enough to go around.

Everybody asks, do you think there will be war with Iran? Nobody knows, and if you see Israel’s crowded cafes, the bustling streets, the crammed beaches, you may think that nobody cares.

Yet Israel is a country on edge. Most seem to have bought Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s line that the price to pay to stop Iran from building a nuclear bomb is much lower than the price to be paid if Iran has the bomb.

Fueling those thoughts are memories of what happened when the Nazis killed 6 million Jews. Today, there are approximately 6 million Jews in Israel. Few Israelis can argue against Netanyahu's insistence of: Never again.

And yet, I don't know anyone here who has prepared their bomb shelter. They're all a mess, used to store boxes, suitcases, footballs and wine. They are used as computer rooms, bicycle storage, play rooms. The attitude is, for the most part, we'll worry about it when the time comes.

Until then, live life.

You missed the boat and your bigotry is showing.

A good part of the Israeli government and most of it's population are turning against their hawk leader. The only thing you got wright is this. People are very sick of both sides beating their war drums. Given enough time cooler heads will prevail . But the name calling is totally uncalled for.

I just hope that this bully Netanhayu is kicked out of Israel. The Israelis need someone that can start talking, instead of just bullying.

What a disaster! He only is accomplishing to make nervous the whole world. Loud F*** mouth!

His "cartoon"presentation shows the level of intellect of this moron. Trying to appear "funny" saying that the death of millions of people is ok.

He should be thrown out of Israel an put in a desert island in the Pacific Ocean. He is a THREAT to humanity.

Israel is like the 32 year old child that refuses to leave the house and go live on their own.

The problem is that the head of the household keeps feeding it and giving the kid money under the guise of love. The rest of the family is getting pissed at the spoiled brat.

MSNBC - We know that anti Israel and pro Muslim stories always rallies the liberal base and the muslim faithful, to name a few, and line them up for this election.

But, can you please start covering the news we really need to know such as Obama administration finally admitting they lied about Libya attack, the economy, housing, student loan, 3/4 Bil cut in senior care and all other news we need to know in order to make an informed decision during this election?

A ggod diversion, but these stories are becoming redundant.

Benghazi-Gate is an impeachable offense, and yet we still have morons who support Obama, an incompetent, unqualified presidential failure in every respect, the worst ever president in US history. Obama's supporters mainly either pay no income taxes whatsoever or else they are on the government dole, or both. These people have sold their souls for a mess of pottage, and their entitlements are showing just how stupid they are. Where do I go to get my free Obama phone? These Islamic morons aren't afraid to die because they are so stupid they truly believe they will go to heaven and be rewarded. This is akin to a cave man or Hitler having a nuclear weapon. Netanyahu is right, don't wait until Iran sends an atomic tipped missle to Israel, do as Barney Fife says, "nip it in the bud!" Hello folks, for decades the anti semitic gambit is used when anyone states facts that shed light on the brutal covert activities Israel has propagated on humanity. Remember the USS Liberty?

USS Liberty was attacked in international waters by Israeli forces on June 8, 1967, killing 34 Americans and wounding another 174. When Israel can't get the U.S. to do its bidding in attacking the countries they want attacked they perpetrate covert military attacks against the U.S.

General Dempsey, Chairman of America’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the man who flew to Tel Aviv and informed Netanyahu that America wanted no part of his scheming against Iran was the subject of an assassination attempt in Afghanistan. This wasn’t an act of terrorism or Taliban militants. It was a mob hit by Israel’s Mosaad against someone who failed to kiss the feet of Netanyahu. His response was to unleash killers, not a fact for the public but a fact just the same, one the American military knows very well. Netsayahoo is pathologically insane.

What about the land Israel has stolen from the Palestinians much less the thousands murdered and millions displaced. Remember the 1947 UN Partition accord and the land ceded to Israel. That wasn’t enough so Israel encroached on more Palestinian land the land lines were redrawn in 1967 and Israel keeps redrawing them to this day Recently Israel’s Defense Ministry has ordered eight Palestinian villages in the West Bank to be razed, claiming the land is needed for military training.. Hundreds of Palestinians are to be displaced despite evidence that the villages have existed since 1830. In their magnanimity they let the farmers have back their own land on the weekend to eke out a living. Israel continues to displace innocent men, women and children and wonders why they are targets of terrorism. What would you do if someone took over your home?

Right now there is a 30 country armada in the Persian Gulf performing war games. We have 3 of our largest carrier groups there (look it up). Could we be looking for or creating a reason to start WWIII? We are also participating with China war ships in a joint venture of the coast of San Francisco. Does anyone really know what our foreign policy is at this point? Republican and Democrat leaders play good cop bad cop with the American people as the sheeple think they really have a seat at the table of those who really run this planet.

One thing is for certain is that when Israel tells America to jump our leaders simply respond “how high”.

Netsayahoo will do anything to start WWIII. The guy actually believes in armageddon and thinks he's the one to deliver it. If Israel wants to go to war, that is their call but they can do it alone and suffer the consequences for their actions!

Trust -

Perhaps you should ask the UN about the land as they were the ones who granted statehood to Israel.

As for lands gained by Israel since then, you should look up the various wars by arab nations against Israel - the attackers lost, and lost land as a result. This is a fact of war and one of the risks of losing it. It is a lesson to not bite off more than you can chew - as the arabs have done by constantly attacking Israel at every opportunity.

But then, I guess you won't let history like the 7-Day War get in the way of your anti-semite rant. Aand no, I'm not Jewish.)

Go read deep into history and you will learn Arab countries never initiated an attack on Israel. It was Israel who always initiated all of the attacks, but since they are such skilled at controlling and deception, they always but blame elsewhere.

This is a fact which top Israeli Government and Military officers have published. Please do you research before you babble nonsense or lies.

muslims are the plague..... we need to eradicate them anyway possible.... they have started, or are involved in 97% of the approx 100 wars going on right now.... Israel just wants to be left alone, and muslims want them, (and us) all dead. So, roast them now before they get a chance to do anything else, start with Iran, then Mecca, then the rest of their "holy " sights, then go and eliminate their rag head cities.... and nuke Iraq, the traitors, and Afghanistan, and Pakistan, shoot, just nuke them all....

Hello Tammy, here you go right out of the zionist play book. If anyone states anything that puts Israel in a negative light they must be admonished and called anti semitic. Sorry, that doesn't work anymore. The American people have woken up and see Netsayahoo for what he is and that is a puppet of the zionist machine that is trying to control the world and unfortunately for you and your minions, It Aint Going To Happen!

One thing that should be clarified is that there is a distinct difference between the Jewish people and the zionist's. The Jewish people are victims of the zionist regime and the zionist's are proponents of the New World Order. Fortunately for humanity they are now part of the Old World Order!

The facts are there, your interpretations and attempts to mislead reek of following an anti-Israel agenda. Fortunately, there are people with brains who aren't mislead by lies and propaganda. There are two sides to the story and those who seek to fulfil an agenda don't want the other side of the story examined.

There is absolutely no justification for Iran to go to war with Israel. They have no common border to argue about. Israel has sufficient willingness to work with their neighboring countries in the past and they will continue to do so. The trouble is not that Iran is not entitled to Nuclear power, rather its intent on how to use it. If its intent is for military purpose (every evidence suggests that) they have just triggered Nuclear race in the region with many countries capable of building one. To counter Iran, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have to have some sort of nominal nuclear capability, that will gradually sip in to Egypt. If Egypt can have it then no question asked Ethiopia has to have an equal defense capability to protect its existence. But none of these countries can guarantee internal political stability.

So; that bring us to the question "should Iran even bother to having such weapon if it understood the risk that it is going to be surrounded by countries all capable of wiping out Iran.

To make the matter worse Iran might think that throwing one war head over Israel will destroy Israel for ever. That will be very wrong. I guarantee it that even a chemical war in Israel will end the existence of Iran. Therefore; if Israel is scrambling to halt this project it is not only they are trying their best to secure Israel, but equally they are trying to save Iran from an utter destruction ever known in modern history.

So; Iran open up your facilities and let us have a look at what you are doing. Come back to being a good international citizen.

anti Israel, pro Israel, it does not matter; Israel will strike Iran right before the final development of a Nuclear warhead, it is not a matter of if, it is when,I Predict right after the November election, no matter who is elected Israel will strike and they will use their own Nuclear weapons; they have already built several cruise type missiles that can be launched from a c-130, which they have many, their redesigned F-16 fighters do not have the range to hit Iran and make it back half-way.

will this be a game changer in the middle east, you bet it will, it will unify most of the Arab country's, however Israel feels it has no choice, with our growing Muslim population in our country, there will be a large civil unrest; why do you think Homeland just took in 500 million rounds of ammo, and 2500 big armoured attack trucks..

All you pro-Israel crowd always get so insulting when anyone dares to say anything against Israel. Israel is not holy or special. Israel is capable of making mistakes and committing crimes and she had in the past. Any one of you who says that we should support Israel unconditionally is a racist. Because such person is trying to tell us that Jews are special, that Jews cannot commit crimes, cannot be mistaken, their state is always right and holy. That is racism. If you think Jews are better than the rest of us or that their state is always right should get the hell out of United States. This is America. America is not Israel. If you think that our country should support your state of Israel at our expense you are mistaken. Your country, you defend it. Stop mooching on my tax money, stop trying to get our boys to die for you. Jews decided that they should have their own state. Fine, they have one. Now it is time for them to be big boys and pay their own bills and fight their own wars. And all of you stating that we should support Israel because Israel is against Muslims. You are forgetting that millions of Palestinians are Christian, and their ancestors were Christian long before your pagan European ancestors accepted Christ. You are forgetting that Christian Palestinians are also being kicked our of their houses, killed, insulted, abused and mistreated by the Israelis on a daily basis. You are forgetting that their thousand year old churches and monasteries are being desecrated daily by Jewish settlers who spray paint slogans like "Jesus is a dog" and such on church walls. I heard many Christians here in the States say that they should support Israel at all times because they are the people of God and pray for Israel's victory over her enemies. I don't hear you call to pray for Palestinian brothers in Christ who are being killed, robbed and abused. It is if Christians of Palestine don't exist at all. The church is the Body of Christ, and it is one. When one part of the body is hurt the other part should feel the pain. But you Christian Zionists would rather side with those who say that Jesus is a liar and an impostor being boiled alive in hell against those who are your brothers and sisters in Christ. Your pastors are on the payroll of Zionists and pro-Zionist sold out politicians. Politicians in this country betrayed the United States. They believe that interests of a foreign nation come first, and that our interests can be sacrificed for the sake of foreign interests. And they use your churches to brainwash you into believing that this has something to do with Christianity. It doesn't. Supporting a non-Christian nation that kills, robs, abuses and insults Christians while illegally occupying their land has nothing to do with Christianity. Shame on you and your churches that preach that.

What you ignore is the constant threats against Israel. Muslim Brotherhood's primary goal is the destruction of Israel. Name one Muslim country that currently isn't against Israel. Obama's actions have effectively opened the gates for radical Islam and radical Islam's stated number one goal is the destruction of Israel. Now, why don't you mention Pakistani television programs that show Jews killing children for their blood? Why don't you mention all the mullahs and religious 'leaders' who incessantly scream for the death of the Jews?

Shame on you for posting one-sided arguements that don't cover both sides of the issue. Please, give citations for your accusations.

Out of the woods: USS Liberty was attacked in international waters by Israeli forces on June 8, 1967, killing 34 Americans and wounding another 174. The incident was an attack on a U.S. Navy technical research ship by Israeli Air Force jet fighter aircraft and Israeli Navy torpedo boats during the Six-Day War. The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two Marines, and one civilian), wounded 170 crew members, and severely damaged the ship. At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 29.3 mi northwest from the Egyptian city of Arish. Both the Israeli and U.S. governments conducted inquiries and issued reports that concluded the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion though others, including all of the ship's survivors that could be located four decades later, have rejected these conclusions and maintain that the attack was deliberate. When Israel can't get the U.S. to do its bidding in attacking the countries they want attacked, they perpetrate covert military attacks against the U.S.

That is one war the USA should stay out of. If we get involved, WW3 will start, and it won't be conventional, there will be nukes involved. That should make the tea baggers and GOP happy, as they want war. Remember McCain singing "bomb bomb Iran" to the Beech boys tune? Now Mitt shooting off his mouth. If it happens, the world will change as we now know it.

"Might makes right". Plain and simple. IT allows one to occupy countries under the flag of freedom and democracy. But remember that the rest of the world does not have to agree.

Why choose Israel to defend and not the Somali people?

Why thrust our "ideals" upon the rest of the world?

Can we now please cover the news and inform people of Obama admitting he lied about Libya attack (the world covered it, except the US), the economy, housing, student loan, 3/4 bil. cut from senior care, green energy, yes we can, etc... so people may be more informed in making decisions during this election?

At the end of WWII, when the Jews decided that they must expand the old Zionist areas into modern Israel, they were trying only to create a safe place for the Jewish people. That was their imperitive. To create a safe place by any means necessary. So they drove the Arabs out as much as they could (25% of Israelis are still Arabic.) But by doing so, they created not a safe place, but the most precarious place they could.

The founmders of Israel had two choices. One was to go top the Arabs and say: Both our religious are Abrahamic, both our languages Aramaic, the roots of our cultures similar, and we have both been badly mistreated by European colonial powers. We are natural allies. We can bring modern medicine, technology, law and even farming to the Arabs in return for absolute sanctuary.

        Israel made the other choice.

Chris, you are completely wrong. When Israel's independence was declared in 1948, the Jews urged the Arabs to stay. Instead, the Arab leaders assured them that if they left, they would soon return in triumph after a brief battle. They were wrong, too.

        @Cassandra,

No competent modern historian would agree with you. Yes, that was the "official" Israeli line for decades, but even the Israeli government has agreed that they drove Arabs from their homes and lands by force of arms, mostly in an attempt to paralyze the Hashamites, Syrians and Egyptians with floods of refugees.

In the 1970's the Israeli government began declassifing documents from the early days of their country. This gave rise to a group of historians. They were then called the "New Historians." They basically challenged the "official" government line that the Arabs fled of their own free will using the government's own internal documents. The Israeli government eventually capitulated. Now only the most right-wing Israelis believe that the Arabe ever left or were promised Israeli homes and land when they returned or that they thought that the Israelis would be driven out by Arab armies. That is all just discredited BS these days.

If you want to read more, here is a good starting place: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Historians

Pay careful attention to the names of the historians (they are published scholars whose work is easily found online) and the sources at the bottom of the article.

It amazes that so many Americans still cling to the old discredited Israeli line that blames the victims.

I would also remind the Israeli trolls that "Israel's sovereignty" ends at the 1967 borders under international law. Period. The rest are "conquered lands" and are not considered soverign to Israel, but to other countries. The only debatable issue is whether the conquered lands belong to Jordan or to an emergent Palestine. But they are NOT Israeli sovereign territory in any sense of the word and more than Iraq is US sovereign territory.

Another blogger once posted the following and unfortunately I cannot quote his/her name:

"Palestinian" referred to the jews of the region prior to Israel's war of indepndence (e.g., the Palestinian Philharmonic; The Plaestinian Post - members of which were jews). It was only after 1948 that the arabs of the region referred to themselves as "Palestinian."

"It must not be forgotten that the Arab Higher Committee encouraged the refugees to flee their homes in Jaffa,
Haifa, and Jerusalem, and that certain leaders make political capital out of
their miserable situation…." – RADIO BROADCAST BY NEAR EAST ARABIC RADIO – April
        3, 1948.

Did you know that there were Jewish appeals to ask the Arabs as
neighbors to stay and not flee, ensuring that they would protect and not hurt them? This appeal was issued by the Jewish Haifa Workers Council in 1948:

"Do not fear, do not destroy your homes with your own
hands, do not bring upon yourself this tragedy by unnecessary evacuation and
self imposed burdens….In this city, yours and ours, Haifa, the gates are open
for work, and life and peace for you and your families. " (THE JEWISH HAIFA
        WORKERS COUNCIL issued 1948)

Consequently, almost 450,000 Arabs fled and thus was
created the tragedy. On April 17th, 1950, the Arab National Committee of Haifa
wrote a memo to Arab governments saying:

        "The Removal of the Arab
inhabitants was voluntary and was carried out at our request… the Arab
delegation proudly asked for the evacuation of the Arabs and their removal to
        the neighboring Arab countries"

This is a direct answer to the alleged claims that Jews caused the refugee crisis. It shows how the majority of Arabs are liars, who assassinate in order to steal land and will by any means and at all costs lie and kill to impose their politics and religion on others, especially the very Jews who were helping those Arabs whose descendants today are attempting to wipe out Israel.

There are certainly Jewish extremists but your unilateral condemnation of jews and israel as is clearly reflected in your post shows your true colors.

At the moment of Israel's birth, palestinian arabs lived on roughly 90% of the original plaestine mandate-in transjordan and in the UN partition area, but also in the new state of Israel itself. There were 800,000 arabs living in Israel alongside 650,000 jews (a figure that would increase rapidly as a result of the influx of refugees from Europe and the middle east). At the same time, jews were legally barred from settling in the 35,000 square miles of Palestinian Transjordan, which was eventually simply renamed "Jordan." The arab population in the slivers called Israel had actually more than tripled since the Zionists first began settling the region in significant numbers in the 1880s. The reason for this increase was that the Jewish settlers had brought industrial and agricultural development with them, which attracted Arab immigrants to what had previously been a sparsely settled and economically destitute area. If the palestinian arabs had been willing to accept this arrangement in which they received 90% of the land in the Palestine Mandate, and under which they benefitted from the industry, enterprise, and political democracy the Jews brought with them to the region, there would have been no middle east conflict. But they were not.

Corrupt Language Breeds Bad History and Bad Policy
        Bruce Thornton - Advancingafreesociety.org - May 22, 2011

"...the false history and its false vocabulary are now taken for reality and made the basis of policy."

As the history of communism and fascism both illustrate, modern political tyranny has relied on fabricated history to legitimize its claims and actions, and such history in turn relies on the debasement of language. Nowhere is this axiom more evident than in the conflict between Israel and the Arabs––so much so that, as Obama’s recent remarks about Israel show, the false history and its false vocabulary are now taken for reality and made the basis of policy.

Start with the use of “borders” to describe what is in fact the armistice line marking the farthest advance of the five Arab armies that invaded Israel in 1948. That line is not an international “border” in the strict sense of a line dividing one sovereign state from another. The territory in question was never a state. Once a state is established, then the international border will be settled by negotiations. As Israeli ambassador Dore Gold points out, U.N. resolution 242, as well as later agreements such as the 1993 Oslo Accords, preserves this “flexibility for creating new borders.”

Then there’s “occupation,” used to describe the Israeli presence in the West Bank, itself a misleading term that obscures the historical fact that this region is Judea and Samaria, the heartland of the ancient Jewish state. Aside from that, using “occupation” to describe Israel’s control over a disputed territory whose final status will be determined by negotiation evokes misleading analogies with historical events like the Nazi occupation of France during World War II, or the Soviet occupation of the Eastern bloc during the Cold War. But that analogy is false: Germany and Russia invaded and then occupied sovereign nations defined by international borders. Israel ended up in the West Bank territories as the result of a defensive war against aggressors. Israel’s continuing control is a defensive necessity, just as after World War I the traditional launching pad for German aggression against France, the Rhineland, was demilitarized and subject to Allied military control. Indeed, the Allied decision to evacuate their forces from the Rhineland was one of many mistakes that led to World War II. Given that central Israel is only 9 miles wide from the Mediterranean to the West Bank, it is understandable that it is cautious about losing control over the traditional Arab launching pad for invasion.

“Palestinian homeland” is another particularly loaded and historically false phrase. “Palestine” was the name of a multi-ethnic Roman, Byzantine, Arab, and Ottoman province, not a people. The name itself reflects Rome’s attempt to alter historical reality with language. After the destruction of Israel as a political entity and the scattering of its people in the 2nd Century A.D., the Romans renamed the territory “Palestine” after the Philistines, a people that once lived in the region but had been absorbed into other groups for centuries. Thus the Romans subjected the Jews to a collective damnatio memoriae, the practice of erasing all public mention or record of an enemy to the Roman state––exactly what the Arabs have been trying to do to Israel for the last 60 years by denying its historical ties to the land.

Likewise, just as the Romans named the land after a people that no longer existed, so too calling the current Arab inhabitants “Palestinians” perpetuates a similar historical fraud. What constitute a people are a shared language, culture, customs, traditions, and history distinct enough to set them apart from others. By these criteria, there is no such thing as “Palestinians.” The average Arab living in Israel or the West Bank is no more significantly distinct from one living in Syria, Jordan, or Egypt than a resident from California is significantly distinct from a resident of Arizona or Nevada. Whatever differences that do exist do not trump the more important similarities, and reflect rather the refusal of surrounding Arab nations to integrate their Arab brothers into their own countries, instead constructing a Palestinian identity based on victimhood, humiliation, and failure.

That’s why before 1967, no one talked about “Palestinians” as a distinct people deserving a homeland, and the Jordanians did not create a Palestinian state when they controlled the West Bank. That notion of a “Palestinian state” arose after the Arab defeats in the 1967 Six Day War and the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Once those debacles made it clear the Arabs could not destroy Israel by force, the tactic shifted to making the issue one of national self-determination as a way of chipping away at Israel’s territorial integrity and international support.

Finally, the claim that the territory inhabited by Israel is the traditional “homeland” of those whom we call Palestinians is false. The majority of Arabs who have lived or are living in Israel and the West Bank are there as the descendants of conquerors, colonizers, and immigrants. Many of them came after Zionists began in the 19th Century to develop a mostly desolate, neglected land and to create economic opportunities. History and archaeology tell us that the territory comprising Israel and the West Bank is the traditional homeland of the Jewish people, not a mythical Palestinian people.

The misleading and false language used to describe the conflict between Israel and the countries that have tried to destroy it obscures the actual causes of Arab hatred of Israel, which in turn creates bad policies pursuing false solutions. A Palestinian state will not bring peace to the region, for the simple reason that a critical mass of Arabs does not want Israel to exist.

To all those who are too bigoted, racist, and parochial to see past their own back yard, consider the January 29, 2012 "Israel vs. Iran" article in the New York Times were it was noted that, "The Iranian regime will be several times more dangerous if it has a nuclear device in its hands...one that it could bring to the United States. It is not for nothing that it (i.e., Iran) is establishing bases for itself in Latin America and creating links with drug dealers on the US-Mexican border. This is happening in order to smuggle ordnance into the United States for the carrying out of terror attacks. Imagine this regime getting nuclear weapons to the US-Mexican border..."

        @farideh,

Saying that something "doesn't wash" doesn't change the legality of it. The international borders of the sovereign state of Israel are still the 1967 borders. That's why the US Embassy is in Tel Aviv and not even a consular office in Jerusalem. Possesion may be 9/10 of the law as the old saying goes, but it is the other 1/10 that keeps you from building a house there (as the rest of the saying goes.)

My point is only that Israel has never made any attempt to get along with its neighbors. They're like the cranky old man who keeps the next door kids' balls. He winds up with hundreds of balls, but neighbors who hate him.

I do not think the world is served by another country joining the "nuclear club" but why do we favor one religion-based "democracy" over another?

Wouldn't the logical step be to demand that BOTH Iran and Israel give up their nuclear ambitions in return for a mutual defense treaty insured by both the United States and NATO? Wouldn't the case be easier to make that no one should have nuclear arms in that part of the world? Where is the logic that allows your 60-year-old pseudo-ally who has invaded every neighbor to have nuclear weapons, and deny them to a 7,00o-year-old enemy who has not invaded a neighbor since they had a go at the Greeks? Numerous UN resolutions have stated that the building and existence of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights are a violation of international law, including UN Security Council resolutions in 1979 and 1980.[10][11][12] UN Security Council Resolution 446 refers to the Fourth Geneva Convention as the applicable international legal instrument, and calls upon Israel to desist from transferring its own population into the territories or changing their demographic makeup. The reconvened Conference of the High Contracting Parties to the Geneva Conventions has declared the settlements illegal[13] as has the primary judicial organ of the UN, the International Court of Justice[14] and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The plight of the Arab refugees was the direct result of the hostilities launched by the Arab themselves against Israel to crush her out of existence at birth. The real claim of the refugees lay against the Arab Governments which had sent their armies to invade Israel, in cynical violation of their international obligations. For its part, the Israel Government was willing to make a contribution to the resettlement of the refugees, provided that such an arrangement be mutual. Israel had taken in some 200,000 Jewish refugees from the Arab Governments concerned. His delegation was willing to
embark upon a discussion of the question with the Arab States, with a view to
        finding a constructive overall solution.

Israel was also willing to take up the question of blocked accounts, subject likewise to the understanding that any discussion would include the blocked accounts in Iraq and Jews who had left that country and been admitted to Israel.

Amir Ali Hajizadeh, a brigadier general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, made the comments to Iran's state-run Arabic language Al-Alam television, according to a report on the network's website.

"Iran will not start any war but it could launch a pre-emptive attack if it was sure that the enemies are putting the final touches to attack it," Al-Alam said, paraphrasing the military commander.

Hajizadeh, who heads the Guard's aerospace division, said any attack on Iranian soil could trigger "World War III."

"We cannot imagine the Zionist regime starting a war without America's support. Therefore, in case of a war, we will get into a war with both of them and we will certainly get into a conflict with American bases," he said. "In that case, unpredictable and unmanageable things would happen and it could turn into a World War III."

U.S. facilities in Bahrain, Qatar and Afghanistan would be targeted, he added. "There will be no neutral country in the region," Hajizadeh was quoted as saying. "To us, these bases are equal to U.S. soil."

Does MSNBC/NBC News collect all the filth gathering together re: this Subject on this supposedly sane debate.

I've never seen such trash on any other Comment Board, ever as this particular one.

Talk, Israel, and it brings out the non-educated lowlifes, who do not understand Foreign Policy, the Middle East Mentality. As Netanyahu says, "Death comes before Life" with Iran/other Middle Eastern Countries. Teachings of the KORAN.

Look at all the self-killings of their own people, and a lust for blood spilled on the streets in the last 2 weeks--the Arab Uprisings, burning the American Flag--haters of America.

Dealing with Extreme Islamists is dealing with a fate of Death. Israel has to protect itself, with its wonder for living. According to the commenter's, they have no right. Yes, they do, just as any other country.

I'd like to read a predominance of Intellectual speakers here on this subject to debate..

        Basil Romeo,

Just so others do not butt into the conversation like Chris-749391,

        Info verifying your post.

(Unclassified Source) The Tri-Border Area (TBA) (Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay). Although no corroborated information shows that Hizballah, HAMAS, or other Islamic extremist groups used the TBA for military-type training or planning of terrorist operations, the United States remains concerned that these groups use the TBA as a safe haven to raise funds. Suspected supporters of Islamic terrorist groups, including Hizballah, take advantage of loosely regulated territory and the proximity of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay and Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil to participate in a wide range of illicit activities and to solicit donations from within the sizable Muslim communities in the region and elsewhere in Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. The governments of the TBA have long been concerned with arms and drugs smuggling, document fraud, money laundering, and the manufacture and movement of contraband goods through this region. In the early years of this decade, the governments of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay invited the United States to participate in the Three Plus One Group on TBA Security to address these illicit activities.

        Another important question is -

Is the world prepared for Netyanyahu's Iran attack. Are israeli's prepared to face its consequences?

Or do they simply assume that mother US will foot the bill for their adventure?

Finally, the claim that territory inhabited by Israel is the traditional "homeland" of those we call Palestinians is false.

        Basil Romeo,

This comes from an Israeli Jew, the late Haaretz editor Gerschom Shocken:

"We conquered the land in which a local Arab population had lived and evolved over the course of more than 1,000 years."

Hello folks, for decades the anti semitic gambit is used when anyone states facts that shed light on the brutal covert activities Israel has propagated on humanity.

One thing is for certain is that when Israel tells America to jump our leaders simply respond “how high”?

Netsayahoo will do anything to start WWIII. The guy actually believes in armageddon and thinks he's the one to deliver it. If Israel wants to go to war, that is their call but they can do it alone and suffer the consequences for their actions!

@ Kallie 2.9 is correct....Great thinking on foreign policy ....Israel is our only sworn ally in the middle east, they border the Mediterranean Sea and would be the only country to allow access to our troops for the purpose of going anywhere else over there if it became necessary and it the only route our Navy can take that is friendly to the US....why would we possibly need them as an ally??.....Our Us Special Forces regularly train with the Moss-ad (Israeli Special Forces) and know how to cooperate in battle.........Not to mention that every past president since the formation of Israel politically has sworn the US support and protection......but now we have a Muslim supporter in the White House.........and last but not least, I know it's a controversial reason....but if we lose control of our assets as and interests in the Middle East get ready for $18 a gallon gas if do not end up rationing it when Martial Law is enacted here (don't think that won't happen here in the US if Israel and I ran actually engage each other.)

Basil Romeo...you provide a lot of interesting info, but as the son and grandson of a Palestinian Christian mother and grandparents who were living in Bethlehem and had their home stormed and taken away from them by Jews during Easter dinner, I may have a slightly different view of kind and gentle offers to stay. The entire family was pushed out of their home, their businesses, vast properties and real estate seized, and were forced to flee to Jordan.

I personally did not experience this and I have no hatred for the Jewish people, but I have a real problem with Americans blindly supporting Isreal and Netanyahu with no real understanding of how people were treated and how things went down for the Palestinian people (who are not all Muslim, by the way).

Take a look at the bookshelves in traditional or digital bookstores and see for yourself how many of the books on the Israel-Palestine crisis are written by non-Jews. I'm not saying they are all biased, many are not, but there are very few written and published with a different point of view.

I think more and more people are seeing that all these fancy talking over educated socialists are worth nothing. Their lies are now catching up with them and people are dying as a result of their political agendas. For an example the Border Patrol Officer that died as a result of Fast and Furious, the Ambassador of Libya because Billery did not listen to the Intel warnings. What a pathetic political group. Obama lied and people died.

"If it is nuclear, you should lie down and cover your head? And don't get up when the first blast wave passes over you because it will be followed by a second wave."

LOL...our government told us to "Duck and Cover". Place your head between your legs, and kiss your A$$ goodbye is more like it. Maybe you should not have invaded all those countries? Maybe we should have left Iran alone 20 years ago instead of wanting cheap oil? Maybe we should have stayed out of their elections? Maybe you should stay out of ours? Even after all that I bet $ that Iran would not use a nuke even if they had one unless it was in self defense.

Who actually started terrorism or was the first terrorist group btw? Could it have been a extremist Jewish group from the 1st century maybe? When did Muslims begin to practice terrorism? Was it before or after the creation of Israel? Could it be that terrorism is their last resort since they have been on the defensive for how many years? You should be happy they learned something from you, there is hope after all...

How much money does the U.S give each Israeli citizen each year? 6 billion for 6 million people is 1000 dollars a year. I wonder how they got all those planes, tank, guns, missiles, etc. hmm? That is why you hear them cry any time someone says anything "bad" about Israel. They want their free money just like the defense contractors do to all at the expense of the U.S. tax payer.

What not ask yourselves why did we elect a black man 4 years ago? Could it be the economy perhaps? Could it be how central banking has destroyed the economy of the world, all so that you may have power? I wonder why world leaders kiss your feet, just like royalty huh? What happened in Europe to certain group that tried to be a central bank? Same mistakes repeated again and again.

While the idea of the bomb shelter is a good one, building them to be completely air tight is perhaps deadly. In a real attack, a blast nearby could easily damage the lock, and without being able to open the door, it would be a death sentence for all inside.

It would be better to have an air vent to the outside that could be opened to allow fresh air in - I understand the idea that you want protection from chemical/biological agents, but possible death from chemical/biological agents is preferable to certain death from suffocation.

Oh, That's right! Israel won't go to war itself. The US needs to fight their war for them.

          @kpr37,

That was in 1951. The Israeli government made that same contention, that the plight of the Arabs was due solely to their own Arab greed until the 1970's when the Israeli government started declassifying documents from the early days of Israel --- particularly 1947-1960, that specifically showed that exactly the opposite was true. In fact, the major criticism of the New Historians in the 1980s is that they relied so heavily on Isreali government documents and very little on Arab sources. Israeli historians jumped all over it and challenged the government's contentions, and even challenged the versions in textbooks that were "sponsored" by the Israeli government. Starting in the late 1980's the Israeli government was forced by its own scholard to retract certain key points:

          • The official version said that Britain tried to prevent the establishment of a Jewish state; the New Historians claimed that it tried to prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state
          • The official version said that the Palestinians fled their homes of their own free will; the New Historians said that the refugees were chased out or expelled
          • The official version said that the balance of power was in favour of the Arabs; the New Historians said that Israel had the advantage both in manpower and in arms
          • The official version said that the Arabs had a coordinated plan to destroy Israel; the New Historians said that the Arabs were divided
          • The official version said that Arab intransigence prevented peace; the New Historians said that Israel is primarily to blame for the dead end.

The "New Historians" were "new" in the late 1980's. Now they would be called the "Historians" because they are the accepted and official history that is in the textbooks and the "official" Isaraeli government stance is so discredited and so contradicted by the Isreali government's own documents (numbering in the tens of thousands) that it is now called "propaganda" by legitimate historians worldwide.

You can't change the world a bit until you can see it as it really is. The reality is that both the Jews and the Arabs have more than enough blame to go around in creating the current situation. Both have exercised the same tired old "all-or-nothing", "my way of the highway" thinking that always stalemates every usefulprocess and has resulted in so much suffering over the centuries. Iran, as a non-Arab country, is pretty much a latecomer to the situation.

          @TrustVerify,

Both Israel and the United States agree that Iran must not be allowed to produce an atomic bomb, but only Israel is prepared to do anything to prevent it from happening. Obama uses 'rhetoric', but after almost 4 years, that has failed, and he is not prepared to do anything about actually stopping Iran, and Iran knows it, so they are proceeding at full speed. Israel has given plenty of warnings that they will act, and most analysts agree that the time to stop Iran (albeit temporarily) is rapidly running out.

Obama's popularity in Israel is in the single digits because they know they can't depend on Obama to protect them. Once Iran has a bomb, they know that they can use it for leverage to expand their political influence with impunity.

Here is an interesting FACT. I did an analysis of American war deaths over the last 100 years, and despite Republicans and Democrats having the Presidency about equal amounts of time, over 96% of American war deaths (600,000+) that have been suffered over that 100 years were under Democratic Presidents. Perhaps that's because Republicans are just more practical and less naive on foreign policy than Democrats.

          Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Waterboy: Israeli's are no angels but neither is anyone else. Certainly there were Arabs who left their homes because they feared for their safety. But why not mention the treatment of Palestinians by Jordan. Palestinians have also been persona non grata in other Arab countries. Did you ever wonder why there are no or very few Jews in many Arab countries. Arab citizens of Israel live better in Israel than they do in totalitarian Arab countries. They live in beautiful homes and drive German cars. Ever hear of the Druze village of Dalyat Al Carmel near Haifa? I am Israeli and had a number of Arab friends to whose homes I was invited for coffee and who were also guests in my home. I do feel bad for your relatives and I am not justifying their treatment but thee is precedent to everything. For example, read up on the 1920 Nabi Musa riots. Waterboy, this is not a land for peace issue. It's a cultural and religious war.

Newscover --- Any nuke that Iran builds isn't likely to be as powerful as anything we build. Most likely it will be overly large in size but less powerful than the ones we used in japan. It would be too large for them to use on one of their missile's so they would probably load it on a plane and do a suicide bombing. Trying to build a nuke isn't that hard but making it small is. Besides their missiles aren't that good but a plane can slip right by Israel's missile defence and would be as accurate as any missile in the world.

The less said on why that wouldn't work, the better; ignorance among terrorists is one of our best defenses, and I'd rather not help out, if you get my drift.

Even if Iran does produce enough enriched uranium to build a nuclear weapon- and even if something built in a 12th century theocracy miraculously works, Israel already has nuclear weapons, though it's believed they have only fission weapons (think "Fat Man"), not the far deadlier fusion gear (think "Canopus"- see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canopus_%28nuclear_test%29).

This boils down to a slap fight between the mini-me's of the United States and Russia.

Frankly, Iran is a degenerate remnant of once-great Persia, and little threat to anyone but itself.

Israel is comprised of a people who have been through the hellish forge of genocide- and those not lost to the fire emerged as a very tough alloy.

Continuing regional warfare has of necessity shaped a people who once aspired to becoming a plowshare into a very sharp sword indeed, with little in the way of mercy for those stupid enough to impale themselves on it.

If the big boys stay off the battlefield regardless of who appears to be winning, there's no chance of escalation- and a very good chance that Jihadists in general will be memorably inspired to leave Israel alone.

It's amazing to see even after all the falsehoods and bad propaganda used to get us into Iraq and Afghanistan and Vietnam and way too many other regions and conflicts there is STILL a sizable percentage of the population who STILL get played by the War Machine and its puppet members.

Maoist China feared and loathed us. As did the Soviet Empire. As do many in Pakistan who are even more radicalized than Iran. They all have (or had at the time) sufficient nuclear weapons to essentially destroy the world as we know it. How many have been used? Zero. It's called MAD, a term used since WWII: Mutually Assured Destruction. NO ONE in power will start launching nukes because they know it will mean their immediate demise as well.

Get a grip. Stop buying into hysteria and nonsense. And stop feeding the War Machine. The Military Industrial Complex is THE problem. Not Iran. Not Iraq. Or not whatever straw dog the US plays or props up.

The definition of insanity is doing the same behaviors over and over again and expecting different results. When is the general population going to learn they have been and are being played by a bunch of soulless, blood money greedy monsters who have been saying the same lies for so long they almost believe them.

Don't feel bad that people are beguiled by Islamic propaganda.. Sure they could have lived in peace together in Israel.. But once they started thumping their Korans and killing people these simple minded folk just could not understand why the Jews were treating them like the animals they were.. The silliest thing I here is that the Israeli Jews commit unprovoked attacks on their poor Palestinian Muslims neighbors.. Constant rocket, mortar and sniper attacks are the cause of their retaliation.. Some would say that the Jews have stolen the land.. After being attacked and fighting off the aggressors they took land as spoils of war.. Bitching and crying because you lost will get you no sympathy from me.. If they could learn to live in peace and coexist they could share the land.. But alas it is easier to try to claim it back after the Jews invest time and money making it fertile..

The Palestinians were allied with the Germans and when they lost it resulted in the loss of their land as no working government represented the mostly migrant Bedouins that inhabited the area..

I think that we all need to have a much closer look at what is going to happen. The fact that Israel is going to hit Iran's nuclear facilities has never been a story of "if" but rather "when". What does this mean for America? Well first lets see what the liberal messiah says directly quoted from his book "Audacity of Hope" (I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.) It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that this past week when Obama spit in the face of Israels PM by telling him in a round about way to "**** off" concerning a request for a face to face meeting, but as we know, Obama seen his meeting with Whoopi Goldberg and the idiots of the "View" as more important than a "once" long time friend of the US who is about to bomb Iran but hey, Obama never won a Nobel Peace Prize "as of yet" for his Foreign Relations...... If Americas will think for themselves this time rather than listen to what MSNBC CNN, NBC, ABC etc...will try to sell them we will see a very interesting picture that has formed right before our eyes without even knowing it. Although this is not a religious post, nor my intention to make it one, I do have to mention that for those of us who follow Biblical Prophecy, the fact that Egypt is now under the leadership of a "pro Islamic Jihadist" helps bring Ez 37,38 & 39 into full view and IMO, this is exactly what is going down as I write. Anyhow, the obvious picture here is that Israel is going to bomb Iran and will do this most likely within the next couple weeks. Once this happens, this will set off the little mad man in Iran's dream to bring about the red carpet for his "Mahdi" to come moon walking in. The call and trumpet sound for the true "Jihad" to begin will be given to where all Muslim countries that surround Israel is going to happen. Just a side note, Mohammed Morsi visited Iran several weeks ago and agreed with Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei concerning Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as being the one true leader who has been hand picked by Allah to lead the way for "Mahdi" to return. Now, if you know anything about this, in order for this to happen, the Muslims of the world must declare Jihad upon Israel but in a way that we have never seen before. Israel BTW is not going to be the only ones in this mess, America is going to be attacked as well. Right now, our Government is working overtime concerning the thousands of sleeper cells in the US we have with suicide bombers. Yes, that's right, suicide bombers on American soil waiting for the command to begin their "jihad" to bring about "Mahdi". Now, once Israel strikes Iran , as we all know, this will be seen as an act of war, not Israel protecting it's people from a country who has sworn before the UN itself that Israel needs to be removed from the map and that the Jewish people as a race need to be eradicated. If Israel does not do this, Iran will hit them with a nuke and kill thousands and possibly millions. Once Israel does this, the UN will condemn Israel as it always does not matter what Israel does and Egypt, Iran, Turkey etc, etc... will declare "war/jihad" and most likely with or without approval will conduct this full out attack upon Israel. For us in the United States, this is where things get tricky. As I posted above, Obama himself is on record not only by his book but also he confirmed this very position on an interview with MSNBC 6/2010.

A cargo ship would be stopped long before. Think a little. better yet. Think a lot. We have boundaries. A large ship would be stopped 500 miles away. A destroyer would be stopped 800 miles away. How small a ship do you think Iran or anybody could use before they could reach the mainland, and what do you think the range of their missles are?

Benjamin Netanyahu, is pointing to Iran saying that they are trying to get a Nuclear weapon.

Israel also said that about Iraq and the US attacked Iraq.

Israel also said this about Syria and attacked Syria.

Benjamin Netanyahu, will be saying this soon about Egypt.

How many times will Netanyahu Israel say that countries around them are attacking them while it is Israel who has Nuclear Weapons WMD and who is attacking them.

The US needs to stay out of this and trust Diplomacy and work with Russia and China to solve this problem.

Israel still needs to give up it's own Nuclear weapons and instead of drawing a Red Line Israel needs to Draw a boarder around their country that will bring peace to the Middle East. The US/EU/NATO have given enough Blood this year.

Those same Leftest Ran Nixon out of office for L I E ing to the American people over a silly "break in" Yet they are not only giving Obama a pass They are literally Covering for him!

WRONG! If you are going to invoke Nixon, let's at least get it straight shall we? When Nixon went crazy and fired Archibald Cox, William Ruckelshaus and Elliot Richardson to try and stop the investigation, he sealed his own fate. It was all survivable up to that point and he would have came out OK after impeachment proceedings. It would have been ugly but cooler heads would have prevailed. Nixon was a political chameleon and frankly I don't care for him that much in spite of Watergate. He was the first RHINO president. He ran up our debt, ruined our currency and expanded government through the DEA and FBI.

And sitting at the table during the Congressional Watergate investigation? A 27 year old woman with bug eye glasses by the name of Hillary Rodham. She didn't make it all the way however. Se was fired for being unethical and fraudulent. Not only that but she was only 1 of 3 Jerry Zeifman fired in a 17 year career.

When asked in 2008 why he fired Clinton he stated,"Because she was a liar," Zeifman said in an interview last week. “She was an unethical, dishonest lawyer. She conspired to violate the Constitution, the rules of the House, the rules of the committee and the rules of confidentiality."

As I watch the shenanigans of the current administrationa and specifically the state department concerning the middle east, north Africa and recent events, I can't help but remember who the players are and what they have done in the past.

'One Man' Think again and try reading a little about history. Before the US ever attacked Irag Israel made a precision air strike on a French Built nuclear plant in Irag. It was called Ooeration Opera and was a surprise Israeli air strike carried out on 7 June 1981, that destroyed a nuclear reactor under construction 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) southeast of Baghdad, Iraq.

Had Irag obtained nuclear capability it would have been a major problem for the US' first invasion to rid Kuwait of the Iraqis. Also Israel does not need to give up and thing(like nukes) as the are surrounded by their enemies who just want to push them into the sea. Oh Yeah Israel is so bad for wanting to or actually defending themselves...Not

I don't think he is asking for pity just pointing out reality. According to my husband and sons people do all sorts of stupid things in combat, often without seeing the foolishness of their own actions. Seems to me that odds are someone would have pushed down eventually but labeling the door lock might have been a good plan. I will reserve my contempt for the ones storing boxes in their bomb shelter at a time like this... and those in the US who think this war will not be our problem too. Crazy guys with nukes is bad on a global scale and those old boys in Iran are absolutely cracked if you ask me.

This brought to mind a story I once read involving a traveller awakened by a fire at their hotel- who then ran out into the street in pajamas with their alarm clock- and nothing else.

One of my neighbors reacted to a tornado warning on their weather radio- admittedly a rare event in California- by unplugging their landline phone and coming over to our house to call their husband; this is a person who had two degrees, one of them a Master's Degree in applied technology.

The point is simple: stressed people sometimes lose the capacity for abstract thought- especially when caught off guard by an unfamiliar emergency.

Smart people often die for no better reason than simple panic.

Believe it or not, it's been established that a lot of dreams are practice for coping with the completely unpredictable- the illogical, disjointed, rapidly changing events of some nightmares is all about reacting to unexpected danger in those first few crucial seconds.

Fact is, they have an air-tight bomb shelter; chances are good that you don't, rendering your opinions on their survival skills moot.

After all, if NBC weapons ever saw use in that scenario, you wouldn't be around to mock their suffocation, right?

Regardless...they should have had a few drills on using it.

Also true: installing a positive-pressure relief valve (preferably in the bathroom) allows air to leave, but not enter, making possible the use of simple oxygen bottles, extending your viable shelter time by weeks with judicious preparation.

@Imperial: Of course in our minds we see no justification for Iran to go to war with Israel. However, Iran doesn't see it that way. Ahmadejed has already, on numerous occasions, stated Israel doesn't have a right to exist. This threat needs to be taken very seriously because when Iran does get a nuclear weapon, it will destroy Israel, no doubt.

Heck they kill people for even a little image of him. Now it is much more likily to build a couple of Dirty bombs for that, and if that happens they will send some to USA as well. They would not have a vast blast radius, but it would not have to have. Just a few in the right areas and bye bye economy. I wish the government ( Both parties ) would be more open with the American people.

Your economy plot is already to late . As our economy is already in the tank. Iran wants the bomb as an insurance policy . Israel has it . So Iran wants it also just to keep Israel out of Iran . Covert raids, air strikes against them will stop if they get the bomb. The end result will be peace much in the same way we have peace with Russia and China. Peace by mutual total destruction . In other words all or nothing if the rockets fly. @Bob1/28: True, the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. averted a nuclear war because we both feared it was a lose-lose proposition. But, should both Iran and Israel one day possess nuclear weapons, can we expect the same "cooler heads prevail" mentality as we saw in the Cold War? I'm not so certain.

The events of 1983-'84 brought us to the brink of nuclear conflict while the world slept. The Soviets' Operation Ryan, in fearful response to their believing that the U.S., under President Reagan, was preparing for a massive first strike, was fueled by such events as the FleetEx Navy training exercise, NATO's Able Archer exercise, KAL 007, Pershing II deployment, the SDI announcement, false alarms in the Soviet nuclear EWS air defense system. Imagine, cloud cover nearly triggered a thought-to-be counter strike by the Soviets. Thanks to a second-guessing Soviet Lieutenant Colonel, that counter strike did not take materialize. Now I ask; can we expect two trigger happy enemies with jittery nerves and itchy fingers remain that level-headed?

The U.S. and the U.S.S.R., now Russia, have that experience, and a line between the White House and the Kremlin. Iran and Israel do not have that experience and they do not have a phone line between their leaders.

In summary, should both have nuclear weapons capability, and if either believe a first strike can lead to victory, then we just might have a nuclear war in the Middle East.

I want to share in your philosophy of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD), I'm just not certain we can trust these two with that concept.

Someone help me out here. I read so many derisive comments about President Obama and his handling of foreign policy, particularly in the ME. So far, he has kept us from starting a war. He kept his word and got us out of Iraq, I expect him to do the same with Afghanistan.

He kept our level of involvement in Libya to an acceptable limit, he is doing the same in Yemen, he provided only covert support to the African Union's move in Somalia, he is keeping us out of Syria and he wants to let diplomacy run its course with Iran.

What do these Obama bashers want the man to do, go in with guns blazing and start a conflagration that could consume the entire ME and beyond?

Someone help me out here because I just don't know what these people want.

The Iranians already have the 20% enriched uranium and conventional explosives necessary to build several (around 15 or so) dirty bombs. They also have the missiles that can deliver them. About four would be all that were necessary to completely turn all of Israel (and parts of surrounding countries) into a situation similar to that immediately around Chernybyl times about 40-60. There is no trick to dirty bombs and no real expertise required --- a pound oif C-4 and several canisters of industrial isotopes would do quite nicely.

The realities of nuclear weaponry are a lot more complex that some Roadrunner cartoon bomb.

                  @Roger White,

Great post. Having fought in "war that should have never been fought" (Vietnam) I still remember all the lives that were lost there in a war a) that we were on the wrong side in, and b) that we lost. In fact, we have not won a major war (unless you count the Bosnian expedition or the First Gulf War as a separate war from the Second) since WWII. We lost in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and are now losing in Afghanistan.

Sooner or later the warhawks need to realize that you cannot impose your will on other people without killing every one of them. And we are a better country than that.

                  @irespond,

I was really struck by Romney's insistance that not being able to open the windows in a passengger jet in a fire was a serious design flaw (apparently known to him but to no aeronautical engineers.) His position was that he knew that there was little air at high altitude, but if the passengers had been able to roll down the windows, what little air would have been available would have rushed to the cockpit and allowed the pilots to land the airplane.

I think this is Romney's worldview in a nutshell. Based on little information, incorrect information, and false suppositions he feels like the 1% and the politicians (the pilot and co-pilot) deserve "all the oxygen" and the passengers (the 47%) shoud gladly sacrifice themselves to land the plane (the economy) successfully.

What I want Obama to do is get the hell out of Dodge. I want him out of the Oval Office as soon as physcially possible. Obama is unqualified to be president. He has no credentials or expertise that would recommend him for the office. He is incompetent to be president. He has done everything in his power to make America into the United States of Europe, lessening our presence in foreign affairs and making America a laughing stock instead of a respected nation. He is an unequivocal failure as president, and he is taking America into unchartered territory where our safety and our prestige is diminished beyond repair. He has amplified our stature as an entitlement society where half of all Americans will not work for food, they want it given to them free and clear. Why in God's name would anyone vote for the re-election of a man who has the total un-American appearance in a world that needs American leadership and principles. Obama is not a viable candidate, and I would vote for a crumpled tin can instead of voting for the worst president ever in US history.

So what qualifications does Mitt Romney have on foreign policy?

Supporting the Vietnam War while refusing to serve himself?

Stating unequivocally that he wouldn't go into Pakistan to get Bin Laden if necessary?

Insulting some of our key allies on his one and only foreign trip?

But hey, parasite Paul Ryan (who never worked in the private sector his entire life) voted to send American troops to go fight and die in a war, so he's eminently qualified.

                  @ Chris:

I totally agree with your comparison. Can you see how the Republicans are getting so desperate that are insulting everybody here?

They want to take their anger and frustration by calling everybody names, and insulting everybody that is not ready to go to war tomorrow, as if they were going to do that.

I am sure that if the US would declare war to anybody, the trolls in this vine, just like Romney, would be the last people to enlist in any branch of the military. Anybody can write big "patriotic" cheap words.

Chris like yourself I am a combat Vietnam veteran served in the Leatherneck Square (near the DMZ). The war monger netanyahu wants to sacrifice more American blood and treasure to fight iIsrael wars. Lest not forget why we invaded Iraq, it had nothing to do with WMD but oil and keeping Israel the superpower in the ME in order to continue its ethnic cleansing of palestinians from their homeland unabated.

Bibi speech in the UN was a deversion to avoid discussing the main problem in the ME, which is the Palestinians desire to end Israel 45 years of oppressive occupation.

Hey Rory, here is proof the war in Iraq was for oil. True we didn't get any, but that was because Chalabi for president of Iraq fell through. Read the whole linkor my short version. The Iraq war was for a 42" oil pipeline from Iraq to Israel, which would have given Israel control of oil to all of Europe. It would have made Israel rich beyond all her dreams and all it would cost are Iraqi and American lives, as well as the 3.5 trillion dollar cost of the war.

Of course the neocons who planned the war didn't count on all the aftermath. It f--d up the whole deal and made it a waste. The war in Afghanistan was also for a pipeline. It was for the TAPI gas pipeline to transport Israeli owned gas to India. They had to get rid of the Taliban first.

                    http://www.sptimes.com/2004/08/15/Columns/Israel_s_pipe_dream__.shtml

Once the Pentagon's choice to lead the "new" Iraq, Chalabi
promised to reopen an old British-built pipeline from Kirkuk in northern Iraq
to the Israeli port of Haifa. The plan impressed Richard Perle, Douglas Feith
and other conservatives influencing Bush administration policy toward Iraq in
the lead-up to last year's war.

The idea also drew enthusiastic response from Israel.

"The pipeline would be a dream," Yosef Paritzky, Israel's minister
of infrastructures, said as reported by Salon.com. "We'd have an
additional source of supply, and could even export some of the crude through
Haifa. But we'd need a treaty with Iraq . . . to build the pipeline."

Once Chalabi assumed a position of influence in the new Iraqi government,
Israel would get its treaty, the neoconservatives were assured.

I think we are all fortunate to be literate and have the news in front of us on the internet. Citizens of Iran certainly don't have those liberties as their leaders threaten the existence of Israel and anyone that supports Israel. The human rights aspect alone should warrant the liberation of Iran, especially going by the freedom scale preached by the free world (Example: Iraq, Libya, Egypt, Syria etc..). Sure, the prospect of war is ugly and peace is preferable but who wants to live in a society where carrying a gas mask and fallout bunker in every home is mandatory? We can't keep heaping the responsibility for the middle easts biggest tyrant on Israel alone, regardless of our religious faith and political opinions. At some point, that ugly monster WILL be under our own beds.

Israel is the problem in middle east (no jewish people, but netanyahu &co)

Evil Iran is a invention of west , no harm will come to Jewish people from Iran ,the destruction of Israel will come from Israeli politics ,politics of war and oppression

i am ashamed to associate the name of Israel with the zionist state bcz they are not in anyway related.

War with iran is a oil control war has nothing to do with regime change or democracy in Iran.

Why don't they go to arabia saudia who behead people in 21th century

i belive that is very possible that jews and muslims can leave in peace(they did before), of course if zionists return to their ungodly domains where they come from.

If zionists think they created Israel they are wrong were 6 million Jews who pay the price for that, and today are 6 million Jews who risk their life's bcz of warloving Zionists.

Maybe you don't know but iran have jewish community as well and they do have rights to practice they religion.

LouK2k12 - I think we are all fortunate to be literate and have the news in front of us on the internet.

You really believe that. Once upon a time ago, the US Senate (S.1959) and US House of Representatives (H.R.1955) attempted to pass US Laws, that eliminated many US Citizens Constitutional Rights. Those of us that paid attention started exposing this, by US Public demand these were Ruled Unconstitutional. So everyone was pleased, and believed we won. So many of us ignored what came next.

January 21, 2009 President Obama signed into US Laws his Patriot Acts (Plural US Laws). That included the previously Ruled Unconstitutional S.1959 and H.R.1955. Monitoring and Censorship of ALL US Communications. Expanded Presidential Powers. Preemptive Detentions of US Citizens. US Military Tribunals (Defense no access to Prosecution's Classified Witnesses nor Classified Information). US Military Use of Deadly Force against US Citizens. (No) Material Support to Terrorist Organization (including No Legal Representation for the accused, as "Expert Advice"). Lots of etc..

President Obama shown during a Staged News Media Event, January 22, 2009, signing his Patriot Acts, 04:38 minutes of 11:55 minutes:

                    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLSeD19m3UE

There are all of those things that in order to circumvent "Obstructionist" US Congress "The Will of the People" that President Obama did (keep clicking on "next", don't blame me about those things that you read and believe are Unconstitutional, Tough Luck):

                    http://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions

To close a loop hole in President Obama's Patriot Acts, President Obama signs into US Law, his 2012 NDAA, the US Military Indefinite Detentions of US Citizens:

Now let's talk about the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran.

A very long time ago, I was told to switch US Military Career Fields (a cush desk job of Nuclear (Weapons) Physics, Missiles, Chemical, Biological, etc.) to US Military Asymmetric Warfare Qualified Officer or Resign my US Military Officer Commission. So because I did not want to fight against the USSR, and the US had gotten kicked out of Iran so I believed we would never go back to Iran, I became Middle East Qualified as language Farsi and Culture Islam. It was not that I was a chickensh!t, it was because at the end of the Vietnam War I was a LRRP/Ranger calling in Airstrikes at Plei Can (Ho Chi Minh super freeway) to slow down the NVA and VC march to the south, so that the rest of the US Military could unarse Vietnam and did not want to go thru that again during the later "Peacetime" US Military.

Of course hindsight is 20/20. As anyone within the US Military with any knowledge of the Middle East was gathered up, did not matter which language, Arabic, Farsi, Pashtu, Dari, etc. and formed into Teams. One group attached to the CIA's SAD/SOG of us ended up going to US Ally Iraq during the Iran Iraq Wars to train and in most cases lead the Iraqis Military to kill Iranians. The other group also attached to the CIA's SAD/SOG went to Pakistan/mountains of Afghanistan to train the Afghans to kill the USSR 40thArmy. With both groups later rotating. It was after all of this that most of us were later sent to the schools to be formally trained as US Military Asymmetric Warfare (aka Special Warfare) over 10 years of training, so there were almost a thousand of us as US Military Asymmetric Warfare Middle East (Islam) Qualified. Later on due to President Clinton's Cut to the Bone Reduction In Forces of the US Military, there were less of us and no replacements were trained, resulting in us being constantly recalled to Active Duty (even from Retirement in the Special Category). To expand our Area(s) of Operation(s) many of us attended Colleges at Islamic Nations to learn other languages (in my case Arabic, then formal Islam (taught only in Arabic)). So from then till now of the almost thousand there are only a few of us left that survived since then.

So let's talk about the Reality of:

LouK2k12 - especially going by the freedom scale preached by the free world (Example: Iraq, Libya, Egypt, Syria etc..).

First the US Politicians NEVER listen to us. In March 2009 President Obama states his March 2009 Iran Policy (appeasement), instead of appeasement the Ayatollahs of Iran increase their Overt and Covert Activities against the US and US Allies). As the Ayatollahs of Iran see this as the US negotiating from a position of Defeat.

Second we knew about the hundreds of thousands of Islamic Jihadists (Holy Warriors of Islam) being trained at the Fundamentalist Islamic Autonomous Kurdistanis Region by the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran's Special Forces, Quds, to Overthrow the US Allies Established Governments. After President Obama's March 2009 Iran Policy this area becomes the Worldwide Main Islamic Jihadist Training Location (logistics closer to Iran).

Examples: The Fundamentalist Islamic Muslim Brotherhood, the new Government of Egypt. The Fundamentalist Islamic Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), the new Government of Libya. The Fundamentalist Islamic Arabic Omani Muslims of the Sudan. The Fundamentalist Islamic Al Sheebah of Somalia. The Fundamentalist Islamic Al Quada International Franchise. The Fundamentalist Islamic Hamas Foreign Fighters of Gaza and Palestine.

Most of us never forgot the longterm Strategic Goal of the Chinese and Russian Federation of getting the US And US Allies out of their Backyards (Resources and Strategic Locations). By doing this the US and US Allies end up without the Strategic Resources required for the US High Tech Standard of Living and the Future Alternative Energy. The Chinese and Russian Federation use the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran as their "Proxy Fighters" (just like the USSR did during the Iran Iraq Wars). The Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran uses the Worldwide Islamic Jihadists as their "Proxy Fighters" as funded by Trillion USDs per year of Mandatory Islamic Tithes funnelled by "Non Established Financial Institutions" (Imams at Mosques Worldwide).

So basically, after all the US and US Allies losses and the gains of the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran, the Chinese and Russian Federation; the time for US Ally Israel to do anything is long passed. The actual time to do anything against the Fundamentalist Islamic ShiaRepublic of Iran was when the US Ally Saudi Arabia demanded the US and or Israelis Military Actions, with President Obama ignoring them just like he recently ignored the President of Israel.

US Ally Saudi Arabia so pissed, "President Obama gave Iraq to Iran as a Gift on a Golden Platter".

First US and US Allies Loss was the US Ally Iraq. After President Obama's Iran Policy the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran pressured the Islamic Shia Government of Iraq to no longer negotiate with President Obama and SOS Clinton for the US to remain at Iraq. And the US MUST withdraw in accordance with President Bush's Timetable, or Iran would go into Iraq and Overthrow them (Iran was already at the 1/3rd of Northern Iraq). After President Obama withdraws the US from Iraq, this is seen as a Victory by the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran, the Ayatollahs of Iran increase all Overt and Covert Activities against the US and US Allies.

The Ayatollahs of Iran then pressure the Islamic Shia Government of Iraq to negotiate with the Allies of the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran, the Chinese and Russian Federation, for the Iraqis Oil, that could have paid for the US and US Allies Liberation of Iraq with Decades to Centuries of Iraqis Oil. This loss Iraqis Oil makes the Libyan Oil of Strategic Importance to the US European Allies.

The previous bluff of Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Canada, etc. is called; as even prior to the First Gulf War they were Oil Laundrying Iraqis Oil; buying cheap and selling for huge profits to the US. So Mexico authorized more high risk deep water oil exploration (like the BP Oil Spill Disaster). Saudi Arabia starts their Deep Sand Desert Oil Explorations. Canada does their environmental disaster strip mining for Oil Shale.

The Islamic Jihadist of Al Quada Saudi Arabia (AQ), Al Quada Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Al Quada Syria (AQS), Al Quada Yemen (AQY), Hezbollah, Al Quada Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), etc. start forming at Libya to Overthrow former US Ally President Gaddaffias a Collaborator to the Christians, Jews, Unbeliever, a Death Penalty Islamic Crime. President Gaddaffi starts reporting increased activities of Al Quada at Libya, President Obama ignores him. As trained they start a Civil War. Afterwards, these Islamic Jihadists release President Obama's Guantanamo Islamic Jihadists that were transferred to President Gaddaffi's Prisons; grab 20,000 portable shoulder launched SA-7 anti aircraft missiles to shoot down US Commercial Airlines ("to cripple the US Economy"). The Libyan Oil is negotiated for the Chinese to obtain. Now the Islamic Jihadists have very close Mediterranean Ports to attack the US European Allies aka Crusaders.

At the same time the Fundamentalist Islamic Muslim Brotherhood is making Deals with the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran before the "Egyptian Revolution". If the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran supports the Muslim Brotherhood the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran will get; closer locations to attack US Ally Israel, Mediterranean Ports to attack the US European Allies aka Crusaders, closer logistics support locations for the Fundamentalist Islamic Hamas Warlords of Gaza and Palestine, Strategic Access to the Suez Canal (US and US Allies must go the long way around Africa).

The Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran starts buying more 21st Century Weapons Systems from their Allies, the Chinese and Russian Federation. The Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran learned from their Mistakes during the Iran Iraq Wars, as to how to successfully close down the Strait of Hormuz, open to their Allies Oil, and seizing the enemies Oil Supertankers. (Does not matter how many warships, aircraft, cruise missiles, etc. anyone has, especially made as Deep Water Navies.).

The Ayatollahs of Iran then pressure the Islamic US Ally Government of Pakistanto get the US Bases out of Pakistan or they willl be Overthrown.

The Ayatollahs of Iran then pressure the US Ally Afghan Government to negotiate with the Ally of the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran, the Chinese (China Metallurgical Group) for the High Tech Mineral Wealth of Afghanistan. The Chinese in 2011 place Restriction of the shipments of High Tech Minerals out of China.

Before anyone starts name calling DO THE RESEARCH. Start with a Causative Timeline.

                    @Cassandra,

You are a serious Israeli troll. "Zionism (Hebrew: ציונות‎, Tsiyonut) is a form of nationalism of Jews and Jewish culture that supports a Jewish nation state in territory defined as the Land of Israel." All Jews are not Zionists and not all Israelis are Zionist. In fact 25% of all Israelis are Arabs.

Saying "Israeli Zionist" is a perfectly good way of distinguishing right wing Israelis from the majority of Israelis who are both non-Zionists and Arabs.

Zionism is a belief that Jews are entitled to a state, no descent person should have a problem with it.

There are very few people in Israel who don't want the country they live in to exist, even among Arabs.

I wish for the israel of peace a G-dly Israel who lives up to his reputation us the chosen one .

I don't wanna see an Israel that oppress the poor and shed innocent blood (you know what i am talking about GAZA war) Don't you think that if Israel helped Palestinians to live in prosperity they wouldn't be enemies but brothers ? People who have a good life don't risk it for anything and Palestinians are not an exception.

DAVID 475776 Arian is my name and has nothing to do with nazies , but i do understand that when you don't like the truth ,you do play that old card of antisemitism

Open your hears David and all you war lovers, may he who delights in war and bloodshed be cursed for ever to eternity and never rise again jew o goyim , and may the peace lovers and compassionate prosper and have a place near the L-rd of heaven because such a people are in the image of the L-rd they G-d and to such a people belong the city of G-d.

Human's right or wrong ideas are defined by their own interests, and is not what the Divine justice is.

                    G-d's name is The just.

                    You think i hate israel?

i do hate anyone who delights in war any politician jew or non jew who want the war, doesn't mater if is right or wrong in their own eyes . WAR IS EVIL AND GOOD PEOPLE PAY THE ULTIMATE PRICE

If you don't want to see an Israel that oppresses the poor, you are in luck there is no such Israel.

If you don't want to see an Israel that sheds innocent blood, talk to Hamas, the Gaza war started with Hamas shooting at Israel while hiding behind their citizens. Israel never attacked unprovoked.

They started all this rift now they can't even provide gas-masks for their citizens. Sick Ba$tards. They need to be taught a lesson. We need to pull out. They made their bed.......

Exactly! Look at DPRK, empirical evidence that containment and diplomacy doesn't work. Yet another shining example of a small country holding the world hostage with NBC weapons and a neighbour living in eternal fear and state of readiness. Someday in the future, someone’s kids will pay the ultimate price to deal with them too.

The only ones that in plain daylight say that they will attack somebody are the Israelis...And if you see they behavior with Palestine then you can deduct that the only terrorists are the Israel State. We won't support or see with good eyes if Israel creates a Third World War....Israel state must be responsible for damages to all the people in the World; and their hate and irresponsibility shall be punished by the peaceful countries in the World. We need good progress, education and successful economies in the future years. Wars and propaganda fears by the Zionists must be condemned...!!!..and I shall add punished..!!

Hamas and Hezbollah are not terrorists. Only a few countries, such as the US and Israel, even list them as terrorist groups. Al-Qaeda is definitely a terrorist group, which operates in many countries, yet is not affiliated with any governments.

The Zionists just got the US to remove the MEK from the list of terrorist groups, because the MEK works with Israel to assassinate Iranian scientists. It wouldn't do, to have our alleged ally be seen working with terrorists. The MEK, even before it was unlisted, has been donating to various Congressman and women, such as Ross-Lehtinen, a Jewish Congress woman.

When will the likes of 111pct realize that Israel is not the reason islamists hate USA?

                        1) USA has been mendling in Arab affairs even before the recreation of Israel, and all that was doen back then can not be undone.

                        2) Arab leaders need an outside enemy to keep attention away from their own shortcomings, and USA is just to good of a scapegoat.

                        3) Our lives are better than theirs, that alone is enough to make them want to kill us.

Even if every station in USA starts repeating that Israel should not exist 24/7, Arabs states will still keep hating USA.

Since Jews helped invent the nuclear bomb, they probably have a pretty good idea what the Iranians are hiding and the timetables involved.

                        .

You know the Iranians could stop ALL of this nonsense if they allowed inspections of the material, as they agreed to do when they received them. If you could save your people from war but just letting inspectors in, WOULDN'T YOU? I would.

A lot floated to Israel from USSR, including valuable skill and knowledge, even knowledge of nukes.

The coast gaurd has captured several of them both before launch and during the attempted landing towards the coast. Who is to say that this same country(Cuba) Isn't going to allow terriosts to invade the USA the same way. They will get to us one way or the other. Lock and load

Israel is really the last bastion of Western Civilization - the only country left at all concerned about preserving its unique cultural heritage and protecting its borders.

And while I'm suspicious of foreign wars - as we all should be - I think Western Civilization is something worth saving. If we need to give unbounded support in order to protect Israel so be it.

Here is some food for thought go move to Israel and see how you would be treated if your a non Jew and i can guarantee you would have a change of mind on the people you call civilized. Yes they are civilized only to their own . OWN.

Christians pretend to like Israel. It's a facade. In order to fulfill biblical prophecy (second coming of the Messiah) Israel must exist because that's where the Messiah is going to show up. By the way, are the Jewish people aware that when "He" comes, they must convert to Christianity or they will be killed. I do not care about Israel. All of this stuff is the side effect of religious fanaticism.

No one but God knows where and when Jesus will return, not even the Son. Christians don't "pretend" to like anyone. The second most important commandment is to love others as much as you love yourself.

Travis- true Israel is a democratic country but if you speak to the 22% of Israeli Arabs, you will be disappointed of Israel. In Israel, democracy only applies to Jews, Arabs and others are treated as second-class citizens. Example: Arabs towns (towns existed prior of the state of israel) most roads are not paved, electricity and water is limited. Arab students do not receive the same quality of education and are discourage to attend higher education. Israel passed law prohibiting Arabs to live in some Jews only neighborhood

The Jew-only areas only exist in your imagination. Arabs have all the equal rights in Israel. For your information 20% of the Knesset consists of Arabs.

I don't think any fair-minded individual can dispute that the Palestinians are subjected to a fair amount of cruelty. My point is - why the heck should we care? Why does the strong nation always have to bow to the weaker one?

Israel won that territory during a war. Would you be willing to give your property and everything you own back to the Native Americans? Of course not, but when it comes to Israel conquest is suddenly an "injustice" that needs to be rectified.

Will Iran bomb Israel? I don't know. Maybe they will the moment they can. Maybe they will use it as a deterrent. Since I'm not in their Government how can I know which it will be? I can't. And since I cannot know for that reason neither can Israel! Sorry, but they do not know for certain what will happen. They can gather intelligence, they can speculate, but they cannot know.

Israel will eventually become prey to their own policies. What happens when you look for peace in Israel? You get blown away like Yitzak Rabin. Israel will probalby be the last victims of their very own "final solution" against Palestine. Yeh, treat people who aren't Jews like cattle (sound familiar) and just see where it gets you. Grow up, quit whining, and start seeking peace (that means stop colonizing an occupied state on the basis of your BS religion). Otherwise sow the wind ... but don't come crying when you reap the whirlwind.

omega, you might try visiting Israel instead of parroting pro-Palestinian propaganda. In Jerusalem, you will see Arabs and Jews working side by side...and your only problem is telling them apart.

Maybe you should cross over to the West Bank or Gaza and check it out sometime.

Ironically, omega, your call is the best evidence in favor of Israel.

I, for example, can not enter Gaza or West Bank, because your beloved Palestinians will probably shoot me on the spot. No Jews allowed. Even those who come to help Palestinians are not guaranteed safety. Ever heard of that Italian activist, hanged by very Palestinian terrorists?

In Israel, everyone is welcome. Independent of their race, religion, nationality or sexual orientation.

Even if you are an anti-Israel activist, the worst that can happen to you is that they wont let you in.

You sound like you have not only never been to Israel, but didn't even do proper research on the subject.

Have you considered that if Egypt and the Palestinians had not attacked Israel in the 1960's that they may not have lost Gaza and the West Bank?

Eli i do understand you ,but wasn't your government that killed thousands of Palestinians? Why don't you seat in the other side and see the situation from Palestinians point of view ?.Don't get me started on hamas ok. those @!$%#s don't care about Palestinians all they care is making millions of dollars from those tunnels and take advantage of Israelis blockade on Gaza strip.

As for you entering in gaza or west bank, i don't think so. you have shed to much palestinian blood .

It is very possible that part of palestinians are of jewish descendants.

Sorry . the truth hurts and hurts a lot i know ,but if i am lying please let me know that i may search and get more informed or educated.

My government? Just because I am Jewish and support Israel you assume I am Israeli.

I happen to be an American, although I understand if it frustrates you that American citizenship is available to Jews and not reserved just for arians.

Nor have I spilled any Palestinian blood. However, that wouldn't make any difference to your Palestinian friends, would it? I am Jewish, so I should not exist on their land, that's all that matters.

As for the Palestinian blood that was spilled by Israel, you have Hamas, Fatah and other Palestinian leaders to thank for that.

Palestinians keep starting pointless wars against Israel, loosing them and suffering the consequences, that the truth that hurts.

Yah, yah, we understand. It's always got to be an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth with you guys. How about showing the world how tough you are by taking a punch for once (you are the "heroes", remember?). Can you take a punch without striking back? It's like a grown man boxing a boy who struck him. It's about equitable response. Show that you truly are a magnanimous people for a change.

Until then, keep crying about who did what 40 years ago. In 10 years Israel won't have the demographic to maintain its "democracy" anyhow. What then? Wholesale killing of arabs or just a new totalitarian style of government? It's a new world, pal, not 1967. If you think the road to Israel's "security" is through sabre rattling and puffing up, that's sad. How about treating your fellow man with some dignity? In the old days, Israel used to walk softly and carry a big stick. Now they just have some clown running around with cartoons telling everybody the sky is falling.

Don't get me wrong. The arabs are terribly confused by modernism. They also have to grow up big time. Their silly medieval mindset is just plain stupid, and contrary to world peace. Hey arabs! Snap out of it! You are both like kids fighting in a sand-box. Once we take away your comic books (and that pretty much describes your holy texts) both groups may stop dragging the world to the cliff. We are tired of it. How about Israel switching to decaf before its too late.

Israel took plenty of punches without striking back, but the other side just kept striking.

Exactly how many rockets was it OK for Gazans to launch at Israel?

Exactly how many suicidal bombings had to be ignored?

Israel shows plenty of dignity toward those who don't show any dignity toward them, more than any other country would in their situation.

If a boy keeps trying to pick a fight with a grown man, he will get bit up sooner or later. That's how life works.

As for demographics, there is plenty of Israeli Arabs, beduins, Drews, Cherques and other groups in Israel who remain loyal to Israel and serve in IDF alongside Jews, because they like living in a democracy (which you have no reason to write in parentheses) rather than a Muslim theocracy of any of the neighboring states. The idea lives and that will keep the country going.

As for Bibi's cartoon show, may be he decided to treat UN as 5-year-old, because they are acting as such.

Eli, just want you to know that I really do love Israel. But they must seek a lasting peace. If that means vaporizing Tehran, well .... I just wish there was another way ...

Obviously when heads of state are calling for the destruction of another, the rhetoric is just a little over the top. You would think the sane people in Iran would have taken care of things by now. Hey, they had one revolution (like that worked out so well for them~), maybe they should think about another (the sooner the better, please, to you sane, rational, Persians trapped in the nutty, theocratic cage of your own construction~).

Hey I was thinking ... how is it that Persia was one of the great advanced civilizations of the ancient world? I mean they had a vast and successful empire. They were truly at the center of history. And yet they were able to do all this without Mohammed, and without Allah. Kind of makes you wonder who pulled the wool over their eyes.

Tehran was an amazing city 50 years ago, a center of thought, fashion and commerce. Then they have their little riot, that some call a revolution. Okay sure, get rid of the Shah and the exploitive capitalists. Yes you won your freedom, Iran for Iranians! Yet the only way you could fight your war of independance was with religion as your crutch? Are there no true patriots in Iran that realize their proud and ancient history without Allah?

It all seems laughable, if it weren't so tragic. I don't think the average Iranian wants a war anymore than anybody else. Maybe its time for some real Persians to step up.

People don't want war politician love it . I support Israel and the right of the Jewish people to live in their land and in peace , but i will never ever support any war. Arian is a EASTERN EUROPEAN name and have nothing to do with nazis so please don't jump to this kind of conclusions .

Can you achieve peace with war? If you are Jewish you should know better.

We have no reason to back the Zionist state of Israel because they started it by murdering innocent people and stealing their land. I think if they would have it their way they would love to own all of the Middle East. They are about to find out what it means to be the chosen people very quick if they don't shut up. I have to commend the President on not jumping through hoops when Israel snaps its thumb. We have our own problems here and like i always said before let them deal with the mess they created. Time to cut the umbilical cord $$$$$$$.

I guess Israel started it by being attacked in 1948 by 5 states and daring to fight back and win.

Well, Israel can handle Iran on their own too, but if Iran get beaten and lets their frustration out on American bases, don't say that you weren't warned.

Think about the Russians in Cuba that are building their "drug" submarines!! It is very well possible that anyone of these terror groups could pay the cubans to travel to our coasts in one of these subs. The USA has caused so many countries to hate us we should be glad to have any allis at all. Hell Cuba might not mind letting them catch a free ride over here. We can't control everything that goes on. I'm sure Cuba has their own air space that the terrorist can travel free and clear all the way there. Hey maybe we can buy some of those gas masks that the jews are selling to their citizens over there. Bastard$. We need to kick them to the curb like a 28 year old son strung out on drugs still living in the basement.

The US should stay out of it. Even though Israel is our friend, the threat to the US will be from both Israel and Iran. The threat from Iran is obvious but, the threat from Israel is also real. There are so many radicals in Israel, some might view the US with hate when we don't help them or agree with them. Remember who assassinated Israel Prime Minister Rabin, the assassin is a radical Jew. There are so many radicals and nukes in Israel that an nuclear attack on the US from a terrorist Jew is a remote possibility.

Realistically, you need to worry about the nukes in Pakistan, and their anti US radicals, not Israel. You know that but facts don't matter here.

I wonder why the Germans didn't attacks Jews in the Middle East back in the 40's? We were protecting their weak a$$ back then too. We are done with that, they need to grow pair and fight their own demons for once, stop dragging us into it.

Israelis are distributing gas masks and preparing bomb shelters (just as some of you stock pile on your guns and food and play weekend games) just in case Iran attacks. What would your remark be like, I wonder, if the headline said: Iran prepares for Israeli attack ?

The possibility of Nukes being used and Obama stays on the campaign trail instead of meeting with world leaders. Typical Democrat that really doesn't care.

They are "selling" gas masks. Might as well make a few bucks while they are at it. So are the gas-mask imported from China? Everything else is. What a joke, both Israel and China. Why do we keep fooling with these stupid governments?

Obama has supported take over of arab countries by muslim radicals and thrown Israel under the bus. That is what the Israeli people know. And if you are an American, that should concern you, case in point; Libya, Egypt, Pakistan.

the full support of President Obama

The only things Obama's supports are Obama, liberal policies, socialist ideals, the desrtuction of the US economy and society, our enemies and his wife and mother-in-law.

Please Do Note for Obama in November. He is one of the majors threats to America and our allies.

WoW Buzz. Just WoW. Barack Obama is the best President we ever had. He rescued us from sure economic collapse. He won the Nobel Peace Prize, ended the Iraq war and is getting us out of Afghanistan after winning that war. Needs our support.

Obama likes Israel so much he blew off Netanyahu last week so he could get together with the dingbats on the View.

You moron, Clearly, Obama hates Israel although he is forced by protocol to pretend to be supportive of them. Obama is a coward. He will never retaliate agains Muslim terrorists unless the public forces or embarasses him into doing so. I would vote for a crumpled tin can before I would ever vote for Obama, just as all Obama supporters would vote for a crumpled tin can before they would vote for a Republican, especially Mitt Romney. Does this spell Civil War II or what? Finally, Obama is the worst president ever in US history, for damn sure.

                                              *BARACK & MICHELLE OBAMA

The TRUTH from those who know the Communist Obama best . . . Netanyahu will never trust the IDIOT either!!! LOL!!!

*" Clinton all over again" - hates the military and looks down on the Secret Service. He is egotistical and cunning; looks you in the eye and appears to agree with you, but turns around and does the opposite---untrustworthy. He has temper tantrums.*

*She is a complete bitch, who hates anybody who is not black; hates the military; and looks at the Secret Service as servants.*

A taxpayer voting for Obama is like a chicken voting for Col. Sanders.
