Freelance photographer Austin Tice, seen in this July 2012 picture taken at an undisclosed location, has been missing since Aug. 13.
The U.S. believes missing American journalist Austin Tice is in the hands of the Syrian government, a State Department spokeswoman said, after a YouTube emerged purporting to show him at the hands of his captors.
Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters Monday that the State Department was unable to verify the accuracy of the video, which appears to shows Tice with masked men that one expert described as a "caricature of a jihadi group."
Nuland said that the video “may have been staged” and added, “There’s a lot of reason for the Syrian Government to duck responsibility, but we continue to believe that, to the best of our knowledge, we think he is in Syrian Government custody."
The battle for Aleppo: My 18 days with the Syrian rebels
Former U.S. Marine Tice, who worked for outlets including The Washington Post and media group McClatchy Newspapers, has been missing in Syria since Aug. 13.
He posted on Twitter on Aug. 11 saying he had been celebrating his birthday with Syrian rebels.
Spent the day at an FSA pool party with music by @taylorswift13. They even brought me whiskey. Hands down, best birthday ever.
— Austin Tice (@Austin_Tice) August 11, 2012
McClatchy reported on its website Monday that Tice was “alive and in the custody of armed men” and quoted Tice’s parents, Marc and Debra, as saying the video was “reassuring.”
It quoted a statement from the Houston couple saying:
“Though it is difficult to see our son in such a setting and situation as that depicted in the video, it is reassuring that he appears to be unharmed. It is evident that the current events in Syria are challenging and difficult for everyone involved. Our wish is that peace and stability can once again return to the people of Syria and that our eldest son, Austin, will soon be safely returned to our family.”
The video clip, which shows masked men carrying guns, came to light after it was shared on a Facebook page associated with supporters of the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Dad hopes Ex-Marine in Syria will turn up safe
NBC News could not confirm the authenticity of the video. The New York Times reported that several analysts expressed doubts about the authenticity of the video.
The Washington Post also quoted Joseph Holliday, of the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War, as saying the video did not ring true and that the "captors" appeared to be wearing Afghan-style clothing rather than those normally associated with Islamists in Syria.
“It’s like a caricature of a jihadi group,” he told the newspaper. “It looks like someone went to the Internet, watched pictures of Afghan mujaheddin, then copied them. My gut instinct is that regime security guys dressed up like a bunch of wahoos and dragged him around and released the video to scare the U.S. and others about the danger of al-Qaida extremists in Syria. It would fit their narrative perfectly.”

After seeing how Obama and Hillary handled the Ambassador Chris Stevens fiasco, they better pray he is NOT in the hands of his captors!
You mean where Obama declared the Libyan embassy incident a terrorist attack 24 hours after it happened, and where Romney almost immediately used the deaths of Americans in Benghazi for some cheap (and failed) political pot shots?
An Obama apologist never sleeps!
Talk about a one-sided story. The agenda on the part of the media to attack the Syrian government while giving the "rebels" a free pass is ridiculous. The last contact they have from this guy has him partying with a bunch of rebels. Not the smartest move for a foreign journalist who is supposed to be impartial and there to capture news. So much for maintaining a professional distance from your subject. One would think that the Syrian government would know how the "rebels" they are fighting dress. How does the media know that the whole video was not staged as some kind of publicity stunt. It certainly does not sound like this was any serious attempt to convince people he was being held by the "rebels" in Syria, or it was not put together by anyone who knows the first thing about the "rebels" who are fighting in Syria. Next thing you know this guy will show up safe and sound and start making the tour of the talk shows to tell his story and to promote the book he is writing about his "ordeal." I do not buy that the Syrian government would risk getting caught in a charade like this and holding an American journalist. The potential backlash from something like this would far outweigh any possible benefit.
WA...are you ever going to get tired of defending your messiah?

Obama White House Finally Changes Story and Admits Terrorist Attacks on US Embassy in Libya
Afghan al-Qaeda mercenaries - just one of the many components of the so-called "Free Syria Army."
Um, let's see, last msg is "celebrating his birthday with Syrian Rebels". Whatever his fate, he brought it upon himself. I'm getting tired of getting the media propaganda routine every times some journalist gets their sorry ass in hot water. It is NOT the job of the US Military or Department of State to baby-sit journalists or get soldiers killed trying to rescue them, and Syria is no place for anyone right now-including our government. The failure of government supporting Arab Spring BS is quite evident, and the sooner our airheads get it through their brains in DC that Syria is not afraid of us and more than willing to dump it's chemical and biological weapons on our troops in the region if we stick out nose into their business the better off we will be. Unless of course THAT is what our elected officials want to happen Great way to create a crisis just before an election.
You mean where Obama declared the Libyan embassy incident a terrorist attack 24 hours after it happened, and where Romney almost immediately used the deaths of Americans in Benghazi for some cheap (and failed) political pot shots?
What world are you living in? At first he blamed it on the videos, then he blamed it on terrorist, then he didn't have a clue, then he changed his mind again.... And they call Romney the flip flopper...
Plus Romney has every right to scrutinize the President's poor handling of the situation. Pres. Obama can't use the Ambassador's death as some kind of shield against scrutiny. He should be held accountable for his poor handling of the situation, especially since people were killed. He's the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and he has no clue what is going on over there?!? He doesn't inspire much confidence during a time of national distress when he (the President) has no clue what is happening!!
I strongly agree with JS in SD's reply. I have studied the propaganda from the western media as well as some of the Russian propaganda. The reporting on this conflict has not been objective. I personally believe that the media is responsible for the majority of the violence. Why are civilian casualties blamed only on the Army defending the country? I won't defend the Syrian regime but I won't become a blind advocate for a rebel group that has instigated this violence and committed unspeakable atrocities as well.
Life is about choices. He chose to go there and place himself in harms way for money. He was not drafted, no longer a soldier, a for hire photographer. Hope he finds his way home. But I feel he should be on his own.
@FEDUPWITHFED
When are you guys going to stop calling him the messiah? The only ones to ever call him that are the dumb GOP. Not one Dem, nor Obama himself, has ever claimed he was the messiah.
Also, Rommney sympathized with the attackers. Not a smart move when Americans were killed. It does make sense seeing he is mormon and understands about people talking about his fake god. The GOP claims the party is of moral value and its biggest value is being Christian, but have someone that believes when he dies he gets to rule his own planet running for president. The reason Obama is going to win is because the GOP cannot bring new ideas...they want to cut the things that make us safe...FDA, EPA, OSHA, and many other federal government programs that keep the citizens safe. Not to mention the education cuts he wants to make.
Get the facts straight. Obama blamed the attack on our embassy in Libya on a video for over a week. He was reluctant to admit it was a planned terrorist attack. I believe most of the American people are smart enought to figure this one out. He is trying to hide the failed foreign policy in the middle east.
John Doe,
Romney was attacking Obama in a poorly timed, self-grandizing, juvinile attempt that blew up in his face. He came off looking like he was inept. Plain and simple.
I'm not a big fan of President Obama, but at least he acknowledged the tragedy of the Ambassador's death, instead of continuing on a political agenda. It amazes me how you can be so blinded by Mr Romney's potential. The man has NO foreign policy experience whatsoever.
JS & Silver
Of course some people can't even believe the weather report, this sounds like you two. Here's some facts for you. The Syrian Gov has refused media into the country from the beginning of this, its only through the rebels that they have gained access to the war. BTW - The rebels have built compounds to hold prisoners that reporters can freely visit, no secrets in that. Yet the Syrian government has done everything to quash all information from the country, now somehow Assad has you two in his back pocket. Do you have a direct line with him? Now an EXPERT on war propaganda states it appears the government has him and now you put this guy as part of you conspiracy theory as well. After looking at both the history of the rebels and the history of Assad from the beginning I can't believe anyone would back Assad.
What's obama gonna do about this, I'll tell you........NOTHING. The same thing he did with the Pakistani doctor who helped us get bin laden, just like he did with Border Patrol Agent Terry and just like what he will do with the most recent Border Patrol Agent shot and killed in Naco, Az. If it is not politically expedient for him or won't score him points he will do NOTHING! Sorry Mr. Tice, but don't look for ANYTHING from this president OR from Hilary Clinton, for that matter!
The birthday boy and revelers could gain some support by staging a kidnapping the MSM can latch on to.
Military Man-1740371
"It amazes me how you can be so blinded by Mr Romney's potential. The man has NO foreign policy experience whatsoever."
Sounds like Obama in 2008! But that didn't seem to matter to all you libs! Now, after 3 1/2 years of Obama foreign policy blunders, you whine about Romney's lack of foreign policy experience!
@FEDUPWITHFED there was no attack on an embassy in Libya. The attack was on a consulate. That is a very crucial fact. Why was the ambassador at a consulate that only has a very small security staff? Why would they attack a consulate at all? Because the terrorist caused a disruption to bait the ambassador there. Then they attacked. It was a well planned terrorist attack.
Would they be willing to trade him for 13 million illegals?
JS's note makes sense. If you wajt to take sides, and enter the country, you are obviously not welcome by the country's government. The country in turmoil has all the right to ban foreigners. And I think Assad is more concerned about his safety and his country going to extremist groups than take time to make videos about foreign intruders.
Now this by Ken is a no-comment - an immature statement, the likes of which people make when reasonable thought process stops
Did anyone else notice how calm and collected the parents of this young man was. Their statement bordered on almost disinterested, I wonder if their son gave them a heads up that he is OK and this is some kind of scam. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but if it were my son, I would be screaming for the gov. to go rescue my child.
Bambi, call Assad and apologize to him for having to feed and house this American. Slug.
.
american journalist = oxymoron these days.
...
Hope he is OK.
BUT - where is the continuing coverage of our Libyan ambassador assiassinated, along with three others, by terrorists, on American soil and the ensuing coverup.
NBC trying its level best to keep America's eye off the ball and the president out of the limelight on this one.
...
Don't worry friend, no one would read it (or get it if they did) anyway. The sheeple don't see the writing on the wall.
Baaaah (wheres my facebook) Baaaaah (where's my cell phone), Baaaah, baaah (need sex, need food), you get the picture.
...
Si.
...
Here we go, Just like Iraq coming up folks. Another Nick Berg (the guy beheaded in Iraq) to kick off America's anger. If you are American and you go to the middle East or any other 3rd world country you are risking your life.
You are officially no one elses responsibility but your own out there. My Dad went to Egypt to fill part of his bucket list and got kidnapped and robbed by several camel jockey's (literally they forced him on a camel and rode him away from his group). I told him not to go, but he didnt listen because like most Americans he is living in a fairy tale world.
Get a clue of what our government is doing in all these other countries before you travel.
You phucking sheeple.
Send in Seal Team six to save him, then they can take out Bashar. I just hope they don't crash and lose any high value military assets this time,... That would be a shame.
Especially for good 'ol Barack, right around election time...
Yeah but then they could create a propaganda group against Obama, write a book about it, and then complain about their volunteer job therebye insulting the moral fiber of our servicemen. Moral conduct? Code of ethics? Whats that?
Go watch some Chuck Norris movies bud, this is real life where real people die. Or do you even care, bet you don't, you just love hearing about all these non American's getting waxed. It's like they always say in reports "ten people and two Americans were killed in the ...".. as if anyone not American is sub human. Seems alot like Nazi thinking to me.
Victory Hail!
How much more do we need to tolerate from these Middle East animals before we take them all out??
Oh that's right...their best ally is right in the White House!
Any non - American Muslim has proven themselves to be sub - human.
@hannibalekt-3542076 While I agree with what you say, your communication skills just make you look like a raving lunatic that polarizes people away from you. On behalf of those of us who are sort of in your camp... stop, please.

"While I agree with what you say, your communication skills just make you look like a raving lunatic that polarizes people away from you. On behalf of those of us who are sort of in your camp... stop, please."
hannibalektr-3542076 is a raving lunatic, and if you agree with him you seriously need to seek professional help yourself!
Feel bad for the journalist. Okay what is happening with Lindsey Lohan nowadays? How about them Cowboys they screwed up just like the Jets. Oh yeah feel real bad for that journalist guy. I know you guys are gonna lose sleep over it too.
Quit pickin' on Lindsey!
Who cares? He's just a puppet for the Obama regime/
I agree. If he were assigned to Afghanistan he'd be writing about how U.S. Soldiers are genoicidal maniacs.
Why should we care about him again?
This whole situation could have been invented by any group involved. The fact that they gave him whiskey seems very odd as it is forbidden to Muslims. If there is one thing for sure it is that an American in this land is everyone's tool and easy meat.
I have the same curiosity about the whiskey given to him. I'm hoping he celebrates his birthday next year.
Some Syrians are not Muslims.
Obama; "just another bump in the road"....off to campaign some more.
I hope he gets home safely. Best wishes to him and to his family.
Why are any Americans in these backward vicious countries? Enough of this masochism!
Couldn't really put it past Assad being he says the obama regime is supporting terrorism. What's sad is that Assad is right as our Gov. would concider ANY group trying to overthrow our Gov. terrorists.
The sad thing publicity wise is that who ever has him cannot afford to let him go public.
We all know the murder of our ambassador to Libya was organized and had nothing to do with a really stupid video. It's also Not the 1st time we have been lied to, happens All the time in our government from Both sides, democrat and republican. Nobody seemed to be bothered when we were lied to about Iraq having nuke weapons when we invaded them and That's a pretty Big Lie.
So acting like Obuma's lies are Worse than what republicans lied about is stupid. The Trash Heap we call Washington is nothing But lies, so lets blame Both sides not just one.
The sad part is that we let it go on!
Term Limits
Flat Tax
Short Term Supreme Court Appointments
Presidential elections should "ratified by popular vote" NOT THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE.
Fix it not just complain about it.
What's sad is that you believe we were told Saddam had nuclear weapons. We were told that Saddam had CHEMICAL,and BIOLOGICAL weapons!. There's a BIG difference between nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons.
beverlym
I don't know who you are listening to but I haven't heard anyone claim the attack on the embassy was caused by the video. Both the Libyan and US government stated it was a planned terrorist attack using the video as a theme for the attack, not because of it. Where is the lie in that?
7.62x39mm
We knew he had chemical weapons, he had already used them on the Kurds. I remember our concern about actionable "rumors" about tactical biological weapons.
Once we were there, there was also some "suspected evidence" found indicating that Osama was behind building a "dirty bomb" (nuclear) weapon in Iraq. If I am not mistaken, we found some evidence of a lab and equipment that could facilitate such a weapon but no indisputable evidence such as high levels of radio activity other than the normal level found in any soil.
Ken Trout, now you're making it up as you go! The regime spent two weeks blaming it on the video. They're still covering it up! Where's the autopsy report? When is Ambassador Stevens' funeral? Will Secretary Clinton attend? Or Obama? There's been no answers to anything, just fairy tales!
sorry for him, but this is war and journalists do not have free pass in war zones. They get caught, killed, or raped, that is their decision that they have to live with. Journalists know what they are getting into. It's the rush man! They love the rush of being somewhere dangerous and reporting. All reporters need to stay out of war areas and if caught, the U.S. miltary should not be risking anymore lives to save them.
The military has reporters. Let them do the work. They are trained and can carry a weapon to defend themselves.
" May Fortune Favor the Foolish "
I hope the young fella makes it home in one piece and unharmed. Then his Dad should give him a good stiff kick in the arse for scaring everyone. Dam you would think that a former Marine would know better (sigh).
Sorry, but Marines think they can handle any situation. They are trained that way. They need to be headstrong to make it through some of the situations they get into. Its just their training. I do agree that he made his own choice though.
I really hate my sister calling herself a Marine because all she did was make it through bootcamp, then injure herself on an obsticle course. She did not even get through school and was medically discharged. My brother, in the Army, went to Afganistan and served his country. He was able to make it home, but my father thinks his daughter is so much better because she finished bootcamp and became a Marine like him.
Mike Wolf24
Sounds like you have your head on straight. As far as you dad is concerned there is a saying I heard when I lived on Missouri . . . "sounds like your daddy ain't had no fetchen up" . . . which translates in to no manners and lots of empty space up there behind those eyeballs!
Good bless ALL of our armed forces, EQUALLY!
Sounds a lot like jealousy and favoritism.. So goes the age old adage "Daddy's little girl".. It doesn't make either of them better or worse than the other.. ALthough your sister was honorably discharged-medical, doesn't mean she would have been any less of a soldier, and BOOTCAMP isn't easy.. Good luck with your situation.. I hope it works out for all of you..
I've seen this at least four times in my lifetime. Why do we continue to send journalists into hostile areas when we know the risks? Where does accountability fit into the equation?
Two thoughts:
1 - Someone has to record these things for the rest of the world, otherwise anything reported is merely hearsay. The loss of journalist lives - or any lives, for that matter - is regrettable but it's a part of war, and we can't avoid having someone report on it just because of the fear. I mean, if we don't record it for history, how can we be doomed to repeat it? ;)
2 - This a$$hat is referred to as a "freelance" photographer - so one would assume he willingly took the assignment into a warzone. His actions while in said warzone sealed his own fate. You don't arouse suspicions, or the ire of the government, by blathering to anyone on your Twitter feed that you're carousing with the opposition (with alcohol, no less.) It would not surprise me, nor would I feel any shred of remorse, if he came home in a body bag.
Goju1,We didn't send him.his emploer sent him.He was just doing his job and didn't deserve this.
Muslims don't have the honesty level of an untrained animal, they can never be trusted, ask anyone thats been there, they are, unfair, sneaky, cheat, lie and steal.A dog is much more honorable and trustworthy.Thats just how it is.They do recognize and don't want to be carpet bombed. So if they don't behave, thats all we have to do.
I personally know a Muslim family from Pakistan that became U.S.citizens.Their three kids went to college, they do not cover their heads and bodies and they absolutely love living in the good old U.S.of A. The Muslims you described are the extremists who use their religion to control people.
It is his problem he wanted to be there.
You are a journalist in a country that does not like Americans, partying with the Rebels. You make your own bed in this life. So for him to be captured, its the because of the choices he made when he decided to go over there. Now if he was a soldier and had no choice but to go, then this would really be a story.
The U.S. believes missing American journalist Austin Tice is in the hands of the Syrian government, a State Department spokeswoman said, after a YouTube emerged purporting to show him at the hands of his captors. LOL. This guy deserves it. Obviously this idiot is another US spy working for the CIA. Good for Syria. Demand 1 billion$ from these occupiers. The United States and its citizens, I mean spies, get what they ask for, just like the retards hiking in Iran.
LetsPlayFair-2938571, I've said it before, and I'll say it again. We really need to take away internet access from those in mental institutions. Hopefully they'll come give you your meds soon!
I have no pity on any American that goes into any Mideast country at this point in time. You know they don't want us there in any capacity so stay out. The liberal attitude is that they will welcome me. as I will tell them what I want them to know in America. That is not a free ride to Muslim's because they could care less what we think.
joejoe,This man is a journalist not an accidental tourist. He knew it was dangerous but he deserves to come back home alive and in one piece.
They should just keep him. I'm tired of American burning up rescources trying to spring these dumb a----s from jails. They know what it's all about if they go they go at their own risk and thats that.
Rick, this man is a journalist not some private citizen playing soldier or hiking in hostile territory. The U.S. should find him and help him to come home safely. He is somebody's son.
