In some ways it could be more about not doing certain things even more than doing them...like, for example, not giving aid money to countries that hate us, not putting embassies in countries that hate us, and not having dealings with countries that hate us. I think the best way to fight terrorism is to not allow people from countries that are terroristic to emigrate to the U.S. and to deport those from the U.S. that are from terrorist places. If they don't live here, they can't plot terror acts like Mohammd Atta and his ilk did right in Sarasota County under our very noses. The best way to fight terrorism is to block terrorists from ever coming here. As far as over there is concerned, we should handle it like the cold war with an iron curtain between the non-terrorist world and those sort of countries. Also, stop pretending Islam is benign. Treat it the same way we did Nazism in the 1940's and Communism in the 1950's. As to our need for oil, let's get our inventors going and get off the sauce and get some alternative energy going. But if all we do is pull out our embassies and cut of money from them, they will continue to think we are weak and ran away. For your edification, and apparent lack of education, weapons of mass destruction include any weapon system capable of inflicting mass casualties. It DOES NOT solely mean nuclear weapons, biological weapons, or chemical weapons. Now it is totally assinine and shows a great deal of ignorance when you allude to the fact that Iraq did not possess WMDs. The belief WMDs ONLY constitute NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) is a fallacy. WMDs (Weapons of Mass Destruction) include ANY weapon system capable of inflicting MASS CASUALTIES. But for the sake of your blame Blame Bush rhetoric, I will attempt to explain this in small bite-size pieces so that the other "political party before common sense crowd" has an opportunity to play connect the dots.

In the mid-1980s Saddam Hussein set out to make Iraq more self-sufficient in CW (Chemical Warfare). It started by buying large quantities of chemicals from foreign companies to boost its production capabilities. In 1983 and 1984 it bought pesticides and precursors from U.S. companies that could be used for mustard gas. A Singapore corporation made the most sales with 3,300 tons of chemicals that could be used for nerve agents and 950 tons of another for mustard gas and sarin. It had a German company build a pesticide plant in Samarra that was really for its WMD program. By 1984 it had several facilities producing large amounts of Chemical Weapons each year.

The Iran-Iraq War convinced Saddam that WMD were an essential part of Iraq’s defense, but afterward the programs were largely scaled back. By the end of the war in 1988 Baghdad believed that WMD had saved the country from the larger Iranian army. CW had become fully integrated into Iraqi military’s tactics and
strategy. Ironically, the war left Iraq with such a huge debt, that its WMD programs had to be scaled back. In August 1988 Iraq stopped producing CW agents, and turned those factories into producing commercial products, but research still continued.

The much smaller BW program however grew from 1988-1990. In 1988 the Al Hakam facility was built for BW research and development into anthrax, botulinum toxin, and clostridium perfringens. In 1990 BW was weaponized and placed in bombs and missiles, while four more plants were adapted for production.

The 1991 Gulf War and its aftermath were a turning point in Iraq’s ambitions for unconventional weapons. By that time Iraq had a large stockpile of WMD. It had CW rockets, artillery shells, bombs, and agents, and to a smaller extent BW weapons. During the war many of its facilities were bombed, but in the end Saddam actually believed that his stocks had saved him once again. He was convinced that the U.S. led Coalition did not turn towards Baghdad because they were afraid that they would be attacked by WMD. The war did destroy Iraq’s capability to produce large quantities of CW, and it also ended most of its
research into BW afterward.

More importantly, the 1991 cease-fire and United Nations resolutions called for Iraq to disarm and declare all of its WMD programs. Saddam didn’t want outsiders to know about the extent of his CW and BW
projects, so he at first tried to hide them from U.N. inspectors, and denied even having biological weapons. Within a few months Baghdad found out how intrusive inspectors intended to be and began secretly destroying its WMD stocks, while trying to retain the facilities and know how so that the programs
could be restarted later. By the end of 1991 for example, all of its CW were destroyed. In 1995 Saddam’s son-in-law and head of his weapons programs Hussein Kamal defected. He revealed Iraq’s BW program and more about its facilities which were eventually all dismantled and monitored. By 1996 Iraq no longer had any major stocks of WMD or large facilities. Only Iraqi intelligence continued low level research and production of BW, which it used to assassinate Iraqi dissidents living abroad. Things were done in such a haphazard and secret manner however that some small quantities of WMD munitions were left at sites, but not on purpose. These would later turn up during the 2002-2003 U.N. inspections and after the U.S. invasion.

Iraq’s activities during the 1990s caused huge problems for it later on, and eventually led to the U.S. overthrowing Saddam. First, Iraq never documented the destruction of its WMD stocks. That meant it had no proof to show inspectors in the 1990s and 2000s that it had unilaterally disarmed. Second, Saddam wanted to keep up the image that it still had WMD because he was always concerned about Iran, which was considered the number one threat. Therefore ambiguous findings by the U.N. were considered helpful in deterring Tehran. Third, Iraq objected to how much access the inspectors wanted. They were considered an affront to national sovereignty, some were spying for Western governments, and they were expanding into Iraq’s conventional military capabilities. Baghdad tried to obstruct their activities as much as possible, which convinced the inspectors, the U.S., and most of the Western world that Iraq must still have WMD. In fact, by the mid-1990s Saddam lost most of his interest in those programs as he was more concerned about the survival of his regime under sanctions. He would ask about WMD, but had no strategy to revive them. All of this was completely missed by U.S. and western intelligence, so when inspectors were kicked out in 1998, most assumed that Iraq went right back to working on its chemical and biological weapons. That eventually played a major role in the U.S. decision to invade in 2003.

The events that proved the existance of the Chemical and Biological Agents was in fact the War with Iran, and the Halabja gassing of the Kurds. SO, while there was NOT the overwhelming stockpile as first believed, there were remnants found, but you also need to keep in mind that following the liberation of Kuwait, we now had 3 potential enemies in the Middle East, and the concern was that these "elements" would fundamentally agree, through mutual support (even though Iran and Iraq hated each other) that following the Terrorist Attack at the world trade center (flying something as mundane as commercial airliners into buildings and killing thousands) that the logical next step would be something on the order of the Tokyo Subway Sarin Gas incident.

Each perpetrator in that terrorist attack (10 in all) carried two packets of sarin totaling approximately 900 millilitres of sarin, except Yasuo Hayashi, who carried three bags. Aum Shinrikyo, a controversial home grown "cultist" group now known as Aleph, originally planned to spread the sarin as an aerosol but did not follow through with it. A single drop of sarin the size of a pinhead can kill an adult.

Carrying their packets of sarin and umbrellas with sharpened tips, the perpetrators boarded their appointed trains. At prearranged stations, the sarin packets were dropped and punctured several times with the sharpened tip of the umbrellas. The men then got off the train and exited the station to meet his accomplice with a car. By leaving the punctured packets on the floor, the sarin was allowed to leak out into the train car and stations. This sarin affected passengers, subway workers, and those who came into contact with them. Sarin is the most volatile of the nerve agents, which means that it can quickly and easily evaporate from a liquid into a vapor and spread into the environment.

Aum Shinrikyo first began their attacks on 27 June 1994 in Matsumoto, Japan. With the help of a converted refrigerator truck, members of the cult released a cloud of sarin which floated near the homes of judges who were overseeing a lawsuit concerning a real-estate dispute which was predicted to go against the cult. From this one event, 500 people were injured and seven people died. In the Tokyo Subway attack, ambulances transported 688 patients and nearly five thousand people reached hospitals by other means. Hospitals saw 5,510 patients, seventeen of whom were deemed critical, thirty-seven severe and 984 moderately ill with vision problems. Most of those reporting to hospitals were the "worried well", who had to be distinguished from those who were ill. ALL OF THIS, caused by 900 milileters or what we in the US would call roughly 30 oz, or the size of 2 cola cans. And IRAQ, By the time UNSCOM left Iraq in December 1998, UNSCOM (United Nations Special Commission) had overseen the destruction or incapacitation of more than 88,000 filled or unfilled chemical munitions, over 600 tons of weaponized or bulk chemical agents, some 4,000 tons of precursor chemicals, some 980 pieces of key production equipment, and some 300 pieces of analytical equipment. Notwithstanding these extraordinary achievements, there remained important uncertainties regarding Iraq's holdings of chemical weapons, their precursors, and munitions.

I agree with some of you that this may be a ploy to get the US involved in Iran. I also see political advantage/disadvantage here. The president has done a pretty good job in foreign affairs - the Republicans want, nothing more, than to start another war or two or three. Israel is and has always been a touchy spot for the US. We, of course, know our religious roots and beliefs are so tied in to what happens to Israel and our part in any way. On the other hand, Israel, geographically speaking, is in a much more dangerous place than the US looking in from a distance. Do we always follow their lead or do we use diplomacy and try to figure out what is going on and by whom before making a rash decision to bomb anyone. Using ones head and using common sense and diplomacy does not mean we do not care about Israel and would not defend them when necessary. It is not a sign of weakness.

Regarding a comment about Jews wearing the yellow Star during WWII - wasn't that something Hitler forced the Jews to wear to be identified? I have never heard of the Jews, themselves, initiating the wearing of the yellow Star. It was also painted on their stores and businesses - to let the Germans know who were Jews and those who were not - another form of persecution. Horrible.
