I am Muslim and I really do not understand the Taliban. They seem to think it is ok to murder anyone who opposes them or anyone who does not think like them. Their latest victim is a young girl who was fighting for her right to an education. Yes, women and girls do have a right to an education according to Islam in spite of what the Taliban might think about it. Their thinking is ignorant. That is not the way of Islam. Religion is a neutral force. It neither makes you better, nor makes you worse. If you have a tendency towards being a decent human being, religion will provide you a framework to be that, and if you have a tendency to being an oppressor or a terrorist, religion will provide you with that, too.

2. I am Christian, but I know a few hundred years ago, the religious were in the reverse. The Muslims in the Ottoman Empire allowed freedom of religion, and people were treated better than under the Christians in many countries. Somehow Christianity evolved to be against senseless killings, while Islam has become more hardcore. I either see this problem getting better with the passage of time, and the younger generation turning away from hate, or much worse if Islam becomes more and more extreme (albeit, in a relatively small proportion of the population of Muslims). I really hope its the first.

The New Testament states that the only religion God accepts as pure is "To be uncorrupted by the world around you and to visit those in their afflictions." Even in the Old testament, man's religions are thoroughly denounced across the board and seen for what they are which is a man made system for a capitalist spirituality that is often time rooted in the founders seared conscience, who requires his own penance to God from others.

Religion is slavery, but the truth sets you free.

God is real and active. Wake up people, being basically a good person does not merit perfection, nor can you by your own power become perfect. Salvation is a free gift of God through Christ's sacrifice. Seek him with all your heart, soul and strength and he will reveal himself to you.

The taliban is one branch of fundamentalist Islam. And fundamentalist Islam has its roots in Sufism.

This philosophy used to be an outlier, and moderate muslim treated the followers like the nutjobs that they are. But this philosophy has been growing, and it is the root of Wahibism (in Saudi Arabia) and the Taliban. This sect (or cult) believes in exterminating all poisons from society. I am a Christian and have been all my life. My brother was a Christian who converted to Islam. Our parents raised us to be free thinkers. We were NEVER indoctrinated. We got to choose what called to us. For my brother, after researching Christianity for several years and then Islam, he decided that Islam called to him the most.

The Taliban, al Queda and other psychos like them, including some Christian fundie nuts, use God as their reason to kill, kill, kill those they hate. It's not about God at all. My brother and his Muslim friends have friends of other faiths and they are a very loving and caring group of people. They aren't horned devils.

So as evil as the Taliban and others are, please don't lump all Muslims together. I have met wonderful people who are of the faith. Look at what you wrote as a first principle: "We got to choose what called to us." I agree that all people should be free to choose their own path(s) in life. But that kind of choice is not valued by Islam. In fact there is a penalty in Islam for someone who is born a Muslim and decides to follow their conscience onto a different road. The transgression is called Apostasy and it carries a DEATH SENTENCE according to Islamic "holy" text. The death sentence comes directly from Muhammad in the Hadith where he declares "He Who Changes His Religion, Kill Him!" That comes from THE most highly authoritative collection of ahadith, compiled by al-Bukhari, a collection that most Muslims recognize as unassailable. DEATH for apostasy, think about that Olivia. Had your brother been born a Muslim, and decided it was no longer right for him, he would be looking over his shoulder the rest of his life in case some radical would try to carry out Muhammad's command to have him murdered.

The issue is not whether or not Moslims are good or evil--or Christians--or any other religion.

The issue is whether or not the radical clerics have finally gained sufficient influence to push a religious war designed to take down any government or nation they deem to be impure in thought or deed, and whether or not they have the resorces and willpower to do so.

The issue is also to what extent the radical clerics and extremists groups (such as the Talaban) can communicate to control their people through fear, intimidation, or a genuine zealous religious devotion (and hatred for us--this is the SCAREY one)--and to what lengths and measures their followers will go to implement directives.

I think no matter what your political or religious beliefs, you would have to have your head buried in stone to not realize, based on thousands of posted videos (if you accept them as proof) that these are very dangerous people to a modern, civilized, and mechanized culture.

I was pointing out where each of the Abrahamic belief systems are in their religion's evolution. For clarification:

I am not part of the Abrahamic belief system--the Jews/Christians/Muslims, so I look at all of you from the perspective of one outside of it. There's not much of a difference between the Holy Bible and the Qu'ran.What is different is where you are in your religion's evolution.

The Jews went through their 'let's kill everyone who doesn't agree with us'' phase when they killed Jesus.

The Christians went through their 'let's kill everyone who doesn't agree with us' phase during the Middle Ages and the Inquisition (though in some parts of the world they still kill practitioners of my belief system)but they've mostly gotten over it.

Now it just remains to the Muslims to do so. While the majority of them (particularly those in Westernized countries) have learned that lesson, there's just a few sects that are fighting the advancement of time. it will happen--I firmly believe the next twenty years or so is going to see an end to the conflicts in the Middle East.

I did not compare the two, I was pointing to specific instances in each religion's history where a decision was made to play nice with others, and pointing out that the Muslim world has reached that point as well. As the Bible was written/created in 329 CE and Islam was founded in the 7th century CE, Christianity has had three hundred extra years to evolve. Within the next twenty years Islam will catch up. Religions evolve and mature, and Islam is no different. They will, it's simply a matter of time.

There have been Muslims in our Armed Forces througout the history of America's armed conflicts, and what the soldier next to you called his God meant little in war. My Dad was also a Vietnam and Korea vet and he told me the only thing that mattered out there was whether your brother-in-arms had your six, not what he called his God. The drone program is designed to specifically target the terrorists, not innocent civilians. Calls for fire support are denied to avoid civilian collateral casualties or destruction of property, drone strikes are called off, airstrikes are diverted, and often this is done at the expense of the deaths/wounding of coalition Soldiers. If we conducted this war like we fought WWII or the Korean war, it would have been over long ago, but at the cost of thousands--possible tens of thousands--more civilian dead and wounded, villages destroyed, and far more anti-Western resentment in the Muslim world than is already present. The Soviets fought it that way, and they failed miserably. In Viet Nam we saw the fallacy of fighting a war where tactical decisions are tempered by political expediency. It's a no-win situation. Like Viet Nam, this "war" will drag on and on until Pakistan and Afghanistan can together push the Taliban out, deny them their safe havens, and orchestrate a popular opposition to radical Islam among their own populations. This child is an incredibly brave old soul with a specific mission in life - to move the human condition forward to a better place through her own sacrifice. This is what the Taliban offers the world. This is their vision. Any group of people who are willing to park outside of a childrens school and kill 14 year old girls for any reason should be considered a cancer to the world. My 2cents. I appreciate the sentiment. It has some validity, but remember, the Taliban did this to her, not the BBC. In fact, I don't believe that the BBC were on any shaky moral ground in any of it. It was simply the Talibans evil deed. We cannot let their evils scare us into relinquishing our rights, liberty and freedom.

They could have protected this girls life by withholding her name. It was senseless and irresponsible of the BBC to publish her name and thereby allow her to become subjected to their evil and ultimately be hunted down and killed all in the name of liberty and freedom. Her diary would still have been a useful tool to them even without her name being released. Anonymity could have allowed her to continue her life. If they were going to publicize her name, the least they could have done for her was to provide her protection, relocation or something. Even a pseudoname would have been acceptable. The big difference is most Muslims that do NOT support or condone the actions of the Taliban are not true Muslims. They can call themselves what ever they want, but they are not following the true Muslim faith. Christians that justify the killing are not true Christians. How can one claim to belong to a group, but not follow the rules of that group. That is like Palosi calling her self a Catholic when she clearly doesn't follow the Church's teaching.

Get real, people. When you can show me that some Christian or Jewish group has a hit list with a 12 year child on it, I will agree that there is an equivalency here.

Are there nuts of all Religious persuasions? Sure. Is there another Religious group as despicable as the Taliban? Not in my estimation!
