When I last visited it a few decades ago, Antioch was in Turkey. I was also informed by the locals that Antioch was formally part of Syria prior to its annexation. If they do find weapons in means Russia is smuggling weapons into Syria using passenger aircraft which makes absolutely no sense at all. I do remember something about Obama violating the War Powers act because he never notified Congress within 60 days of committing our military to an operation in a foreign country. David, you seem reasonable based upon your comments, this wasn't a war that the U.S. declared upon another country, then you would be right, however, this was a NATO action by the UN, if you read up on the UN articles you will find that the U.S. "must" contribe whether its troops or sending ships or aircraft. the U.S. doesn't have to send troops in which it didn't, but did send air-crafts as in fighter jets and drones, U.S. congress can't override UN articles contracted with the U.S. that is why it quickly got thrown out in the courts when the republicans and a sole democrat (who opposes all war including U.S. response to 9-11) sued obama in favor of Gadhafi.

No it wasn't carrying weapons. According to the BBC article, I would wait to get further confirmation, it was carrying military communications equipment. Of course local media could be a cover story, etc.

Local media reports say military communication devices were seized by the Turkish authorities for further examination and the aircraft was later granted permission to leave.

If it does turn out to be true then it means that every aircraft flying into Syria is now suspect for carrying military hardware. If its true then it means Russia is using passenger plains to send military supplies to Syria. If They had gotten away with it would it have stopped at communications hardware and other non lethal supplies? Of course communications and knowledge is paramount in any operation.

I suppose we should just ignore this because the U.S. doesn't want to get its hands dirty until the U.N. passes a resolution and we are forced to get involved according to John?

You say this President has learned from past mistakes. The mistake we made in the 80's when we helped Afghanistan defeat the Former Soviet Union and as soon as the fighting was done we abandoned Afghanistan which left a void which allowed al Queda and the Taliban to step and take control.

How is that any different than what Obama did with Libya, is doing with Afghanistan, and is doing with Syria? How about the Muslim Brotherhood winning control of Egypt?

One of the reasons that Obama did NOT arm the "rebels" inb Libya is that the two rebel tribes that overthres the three tribes loyal to Ghadaffi were a major source of "foreign fighters" in the Afghan/Paki border region. There were also affiliations with the top leadership in al-Quaeda. The "noms de guerre" of several of the top al-Quaeda leaders (now deceased) ended in al-Libi, which means "from Libya."

The US does not get to say how much of a presence it has in a sovereign country. Period. The only way to get that say is to invade the country or to bribe its leaders. And the latter has not worked out very well. (Remember that people like Sadaam and Ghadaffi and Noriega were all on out payroll.) Embassies in foreign countries depend on locals to guard them. They are allowed a small number of "ceremonial" Marines to guard, but that number is strictly limited and never in consulate offices.

The rebels in Libya and Syria are not turning to al-Quarda for help. al-Quaeda is a part of the peoples there. That is why Obama has been reluctant to directly arm any rebels --- in Libya or Syria --- as the GOP did with arming the Taiban and teaching them to shoot down helicopters. The idea is to find out who you are arming first.

We didn't "abandon" Afghahnistan as you suggest. We armed and trained the Taliban and they took over from the Soviets. Then we armed and trained the Northern Alliance and they drive the Taliban from power and then Bush decided that giving Iraq to Iran was much more important and diverted all forced from hunting bin Laden to hunting WMDs (which the US gave to Iraq to start with.)

The Muslim Brotherhood won at the ballot box in Egypt for the simple reason that the only other candidate was an Egyptiam military man and was seen by around 90% of the population as a stooge for the Egyptian military who were stooges for the US military.

It actually appears that Obama is learning well.

1) When Obama took offic we had already lost in Iraq but were continuing to lose men. The country was already well on its way to being an Iranian puppet nation that would be immersed in civil war for the next 20-50 years. Obama did not do what Bush did, and simply pulled out troops out instead of continuing to lose troops in a vain show of "strength".

2) We are losing in Afghanistan. The military wanted to try a surge to try to gain enough ground this summer to allow the Afghan Army some breathing room. As they often do, the military underestimated the probem and the surge failed. Now we are withdrawing from Afghanistan. That is a lot different that Bush who ceased the hunt for bin Laden and diverted military resources from Afghanistan to Iraq at a critical time.

3) We didn't arm the rebels in Libya as the GOP was demanding. That would have been extremely stupid since the two tribes that were the primary rebels were well-known to be full of al-Quaeda sympathizers. Unlike the Taliban, the Libyan rebels have to make do with arms from the Libyan Army and not American weaponry. However, Obama did succeed in forcing NATO to tae the point on that one, something that Bush had completely failed to do on several occasions.

4) Ditto with Syria. While the majority of Syrians have little sympathy with al-Quaeda, the situation is so complex that there is no way to tell who would end up with any arms aid. So the US is working covertly with both Turkey (a NATO member) and Jordan (a long time friend) to keep the situation contained and let the Syrians work out their own problem. While most of what you said is almost Fact, we (my Teams and myself) did train with US Ally Turkey's Special Forces killing the Fundamentalist Islamic Kurdistanis PKK, HPG, KGK at Southern Turkey as Asymmetric Mountain Warfare before doing the same Asymmetric Mountain Warfare at Afghanistan.

Note: The Fundamentalist Islamic Kurdistanis of the PKK, HPG, KGK are all armed men, women, children and trained to fight as Asymmetric Warfare.
