The leader of the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group has claimed responsibility for launching the drone aircraft that entered Israeli airspace earlier this week.
The rare admission Thursday by Hassan Nasrallah raises regional tensions at a sensitive time when the group's backers, Syria and Iran, are under pressure.
Israel shoots down unidentified drone
Earlier Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hezbollah of launching the drone.
The unmanned aircraft was shot down by Israel, but the infiltration marked a rare breach of Israel's airspace. Hezbollah had been the leading suspect because of its arsenal of sophisticated Iranian weapons and a history of trying to deploy similar aircraft.

Nasrallah said in a televised speech that the drone was Iranian-made and went down near the Dimona nuclear reactor in the Negev Desert, after flying some 25 miles into Israel.
"The drone flew over sensitive installations inside southern Palestine," he said in a televised speech.
Hezbollah does not recognize Israel.
"Today we are uncovering a small part of our capabilities, and we shall keep many more hidden," Nasrallah added. "It is our natural right to send other reconnaissance flights inside occupied Palestine ... This is not the first time and will not be the last. We can reach any place we want" inside Israel, he said.
With a formidable arsenal that rivals that of the Lebanese army, Hezbollah is already under pressure in Lebanon from rivals who accuse it of putting Lebanon at risk of getting sucked into regional turmoil. Confirmation that Hezbollah was behind the drone could produce further internal strain as it pursues its longstanding conflict with Israel.
Israel routinely sends F-16s over Lebanon, breaking the sound barrier over Beirut and other places as a show of strength.
Hezbollah, a powerful Shiite group committed to Israel's destruction, has long served as an Iranian proxy along Israel's northern border. The two sides fought a brutal monthlong war in mid-2006. Hundreds of people were killed, and Hezbollah fired several thousand rockets and missiles into Israel before the conflict ended in a stalemate.
Hezbollah has attempted to send unmanned aircraft into Israel on several occasions, dating back to 2004. Nasrallah has claimed that the group's pilotless aircraft were capable of carrying explosives and striking deep into Israel.
The last known attempt by Hezbollah to use a drone took place during the 2006 war, when Israel shot down an Iranian-made pilotless aircraft that entered its airspace.
Since the fighting ended, the sides have been locked in a covert battle against one another.
Touring southern Israel on Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised efforts to prevent land infiltrations from Egypt. He mentioned that Israel has been equally successful "in the air, just like we thwarted the Hezbollah attempt last weekend," his first public statement blaming Hezbollah.
Israel says the drone was not carrying explosives and appeared to be on a reconnaissance mission.
During the televised speech, Nasrallah denied sending fighters into Syria to help Hezbollah's ally President Bashar Assad to quell the rebellion in Syria.
"We did not fight alongside the regime until now. The regime did not ask us to do so and also who says that doing so is in Lebanon's interest?" Nasrallah said.
Hezbollah's opponents have accused it of sending fighters into Syria. Last month, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned Nasrallah for helping Assad crush anti-government protests, as well as two other members for the group's "terrorist activities" in general.

The problem that Hezbollah has is that if they start anything with Israel they will end up having to fight on two fronts because the Lebanese army will come after them as well as the Israelis. The Lebanese government does not want a war with Israel and would help put a stop to Hezbollah to restore the peace.

And remember, it's ROMNEY who's given up on the Middle East peace process. He'd have them in an escalating infinite war with no hope for peace. Romney in his 47% video also said Palestinians "have no interest" in peace with Israel and suggested that efforts at Mideast peace under his administration would languish.
Adding: "You hope for some degree of stability, but you recognize that this is going to remain an unsolved problem.and we kick the ball down the field and hope that ultimately, somehow, something will happen and resolve it," Romney said.
NO hope for peace, kick the ball down the road and hope somehow things will work out. Sounds like a stellar foreign policy. Oozes "LEADERSHIP", no?
I'm thinking that they probably modeled their drone after the US one that crash landed in Iran. It doesn't take much of a stretch of the imagination to think that Iran shared that technology with the other anti Israel states.
After the last war between Israel and Hezbollah, the UN had an agreement the Hezbollah would disarm in response to Israel distcontinuing to bomb southern Lebanon. The UN is useless and has no power. Israel will start bombing southern Lebanon again soon and its Hezbollah's fault.

I wish that were true but reality dictates that the Lebanese army is predominately pro-Syrian and pro-Iran and will actually come to the assistance of Hezbollah in any conflict with Israel, even if Hezbollah starts the hostillities. This has always been the case in the past and I see nothing new in Lebanon that would alter that policy.
I wish you were right in post #1.3 above, but reality in the Middle East is such that what we wish for most likely will not happen!
Hezbollah is trying to create a diversionary war. They are stuck in the odd position of opposing the Islamic rebels in Syria. Hezbollah might get the war they are looking for, but not from Israel, rather from Turkey.

The drone in question is Iranian designed and could be of either Iranian of Venezuelan manufacture. The latter is fairly likely because it would be very difficult to get a military device of this type from Iran to the Hezbollah, but relatively easy to get it from Venezuela to Hezbollah.

It is pretty hard for the IDF to claim much of a victory in this. The cost of two fighters and four air-to-air missiles is much higher than the cost of one drone.
No one seems to be interested in WHY the Hezbollah were flying the drone in the first place. The reason is that maps of Israel differ greatly in where different landmarks, roads and structures are located. Even maps on Google Maps and Google Earth are "doctored" so that usable locations are difficult to tie to accurate coordinates. By flying a drone over what seems to be empty desert, the drone can photograph all sorts of landmarks and determine accurate GPS coordinates. You don't need all the landmarks, just a handful to extrapolate more accurate target mapping. This information is critical for Iran to be able to accurately target Israeli targets for their missiles. (Israel does not have the problem because the US supplies Israel with reconnaissance satellite imagry and mapping.)
I would actually score this one as a mild win for the Hezbollah. They made the IDF pay well over $100k for a $4,000 drone. And they were able to map inside Israel probably to the extent of compromising the true target locations of much of the southern part of Israel, including the Nagev Nuclear Research Center which also houses the Dimona reactor and much of Israel's nuclear weapons program --- a prime target for any retaliatory attack or first strike by Iran.
And the IDF's huge announcements of the shootdown make you wonder how many drones have performed successfully over Israel since the first flight in 2004 when Hezbollah flew a drone briefly over northern Israel. These drones are slow, quiet, low-IR, and extremely difficult to pick up on radar or to get a lockon for a missile shoot.

Sharon surrounded two Palestinian refugee camps and massacred innocent people. Sharon was to be put up on charges but they dropped them and made him a Prime minister. No country on earth has had so many leaders that have slaughtered so many innocent people. Hezbollah was started and they swore that they would never allow them to do that again. Last time Israel went into Lebanon they got there ass kicked, and Sharon is in a coma.

You bought the lie. The video was not the cause of the embassy attack, maybe a contributor but not THE cause. These people hate America and took advantage of a situation. It could just have easily been some other event such as a Koran burning preacher or the wrong turn of a phrase by a politician. SECTION - THE INJURED
Witnesses have said that subway entrances resembled battlefields. In many cases, the injured simply lay on the ground, many with breathing difficulties. Several of those affected by sarin went to work in spite of their symptoms, most of them not realizing that they had been exposed to sarin. Most of the victims sought medical treatment as the symptoms worsened and as they learned of the actual circumstances of the attacks via news broadcasts.

Of those, 47 out of 70 have been certified as disabled and 1,077 of 1,163 applications for serious injuries or illnesses have been certified.
Surveys of the victims (in 1998 and 2001) showed that many were still suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. In one survey, twenty percent of 837 respondents complained that they felt insecure whenever riding a train, while ten percent answered that they tried to avoid any nerve-attack related news. Over sixty percent reported chronic eyestrain and said their vision had worsened.
