Subscribe to RSSCpl. Bert Paquet of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police provides the latest details of a shooting at the U.S.-Canadian border between Surrey, B.C. and Blaine, Wash.
Updated at 9:49 p.m. ET: A Canadian border agent has been shot and her assailant killed at the main border crossing from Washington state to Canada, according to law enforcement officials. The crossing was closed to traffic on Tuesday afternoon.
The Canadian Border Services Agency guard, who was shot in the neck area, was airlifted around 2:30 p.m. to a Vancouver-area hospital, The Province newspaper reported, citing emergency services. She was still breathing after the shooting, officials said Tuesday afternoon.
The shooter shot himself in the head after the incident, according to The Province. He has yet to be identified by police.
The Washington State Department of Transportation announced that all northbound lanes of Interstate 5, which leads to the Peace Arch crossing, were closed to traffic because of police activity. Southbound lanes from Canada into the United States were also closed. Drivers were being diverted to other border crossings.
The suspect in the shooting, the Province reported, was driving a white Ford van with Washington state license plates. It is unclear whether the van belonged to him.
Elizabeth Southam told the Global News that she was returning from Halloween shopping and was about three cars behind the border booth when she heard two loud gunshots.
She spoke with the Global News by phone as she was stuck at the border. She said the shooter's van remained at the scene.
"Everybody started freaking out," she said. "Border guards ran out of the little booths here and locked everything up. Everyone just went crazy."
She saw border guards pull their service weapons on the van.
"I didn't actually see the guns go off but they were all screaming and yelling at the guy and then he shot himself," Southam told the News.
Dave Noble, who commutes from Washington state to White Rock in Canada several times a week, spoke with reporters at the scene about what he saw and heard.
"There were shots fired in quick succession, and then I heard some screams," Noble said, according to the Vancouver Sun.

I'm sorry that this has happened. My best wishes to the agent for a speedy recovery, and my condolences to the assailant's family. I'm sure that there are a lot of unanswered questions that may never get resolved.
(I had a friend who was shot at work by a former employee--my thoughts are that a similar tragedy has happened again.)
Well, usually in the USA it is the other way around--police shot and killed 5 people yesterday 10/16/12!--Wonder why that is not mentioned here in the news--ever---------I wonder if USA police have a deal with the funeral business as a supporter--it would sure seem that way!

There was no connection between the victim and the assailant and the shooter was just some random depressed out of work Seattle tattoo artist. What's the point of shooting the border guard, only to then shoot yourself in the head? If this is not a planned murder-suicide against a specific Canadian border agent, then the entire incident makes no sense. It's not like you can kill the border agent and then race across the border safely. There is no excape -- period. The border agent's boyfriend, lover, or whatever is probably the one who shot her.

The only reason I can see why someone would shoot the female officer, then shoot himself is if he knew her. Ex-wife, girlfriend, married guy and she is gonna talk...etc. etc. This just does not sound like a random act. I wouldn't be surprised if the two people shot knew each other. That is the only logical explanation, assuming their is one at all...he could have just been a nut.

I think it's funny that as a veteran I get included in that 47% for drawing my GI Bill or Using the VA Benefits. Does this make me some charity case looking for a hand out? Does taking away the GI Bill for Veterans (who paid into it) sound like putting welfare cases in their places? How about taking away VA medical benefits and handing them the same "voucher" that welfare recipients get? I didn't serve my country to be treated as a charity case and given "handouts". I lived there for forty years. I have now lived in the U.S. for seventeen years (first three from birth to three years; last fourteen from age forty-three to age fifty-eight). Having been totally educated in Canada, I am blown away by the lack of knowledge that I consistantly see in the typical American. Do you really think Canada wants you? I think NOT!
However, my American-born husband and I may move up if Obama gets in; at least the Democratic-Socialist system is vastly superior to what Obama plans to implement on his "subjects"! Oh, and we CAN! How can Romney take "socialized" medicine away? The US dose not have it and even Obama's plan dose not qualify for it. Socialized is not making people pay private companies for insurance. Socialized is when people pay taxes to the government for it to re-disperse those funds for social programs. It just so happens in Canada,basic and emergency medical needs are payed for by the government, because they have tax to support it.
I love when people say that the Obama plan is socialist. Nothing can be further from the truth.

Well stated on your explanation Linlee. Whether I agree with everything you said or not, it was a debating point well made. I haven't been in Canada since August on business, but gas was $1.47/liter then. I also have no flipping clue what it is now.

For the record, it is very clear that he did mean 47% of all people. Here's what he said:
He said that 47 of "the people" will vote for Obama. Not 47% of "the people that will vote for Obama", just straight out 47% of the people. You can try and say that he misspoke, but he then goes on to qualify that, not once but twice. Firstly by saying "there are 47% who are with him, who are dependent..." And then "These are people who pay no income tax; 47 percent of Americans pay no income tax."
And if you still want to think he misspoke, then answer me this. Why did he say 47%, which just so happens to be the number of americans that pay no income tax? It's not a coincidence!
And to further qualify that he meant 47% of all americans, and not just Obama supporters he then goes on to say this:

But, it looks like I'll have to state it again: guns are so prevalent and the U.S. is the largest manufacturer and distributor of guns and that is why this incident occured. This maniac was an ordinary, peaceful, ho-hum, librarian-type of guy most of his life. He got his hands on a gun then he suddenly transformed into Rambo, Dirty Harry and Quick Draw McGaw all in one. If he had not been able to obtain a gun so readily and easily he would still be alive and the police officer would not now be fighting for her life. The only reason that you keep hearing about anything happening on the Mexican border is because the media controllers know that it's what you want to read about instead of other important issues.
Funny how we go looking for terrorist all over the world and let them walk into America from Mexico to walk around our country. The shooting of any border partol officer is awful, they are law enforcement officers and put their life on the line everyday, to bad our current administration can't get that through their thick skull.

Uhmmmm..... I will grant that the ASSUMPTION the shooter was American is valid, it is NOT a known fact. The shooter was driving a white Ford van with Washington state plates. Was the van a personal vehicle or a rental? The article did not note one way or the other, so at this time, you're speculating it was an American..... although I would tend to agree, I'll wait for the FACTS to come out.
Yes, as of 9:45 pm est, it is only known that the shooter was male (and probably white, usually is if race is not mentioned) and that he was driving a car with Washington state plates. He could be an American, but could be from almost anywhere.
