Race shame as crowd monkey noises taint European soccer

The British government has called for Serbia's national soccer team to face sanctions for racial abuse against its players. NBC's Karl Bostic reports.

Britain's government has written to European soccer authorities demanding "tough sanctions" against Serbia after racist chants - including monkey noises - were heard at an international match with England on Tuesday night.

Abuse was hurled at black members of the England Under-21 team in Krusevac, Serbia, according to England officials. The match ended in a series of angry tussles between players on on both sides.

Monkey chants, which the England team captain said came from Serb supporters, were audible on above ambient crowd noise.

British sports Minister Hugh Robertson said Wednesday the scenes at the end of the game were "disgraceful."

"I have written to [Union of European Football Associations] President Michel Platini ... urging them to investigate immediately," he said.

Trouble quickly escalated when Serbia's players and officials started attacking their England counterparts, in scenes broadcast on a British sports channel.

A video clip, unverified by NBC News, appears to show monkey noises audible from the crowd at Tuesday night's U21 soccer match between England and Serbia

The monkey chants could clearly be heard in clips uploaded to YouTube as black England defender Danny Rose was penalized for kicking the ball into the crowd in frustration. It was not clear where the noise had come from.

Rose, who had been standing apart from the main group of players after trouble broke out, mimicked a monkey by sticking his arms underneath his armpits to demonstrate the racial nature of the abuse he could hear.

A spokesman for  Britain's Prime Minister, David Cameron, said he was "appalled" at the scenes, while Rose's father told ITV News he wanted Serbia banned from European soccer.

In a statement, England Under-21 captain, Jordan Henderson, said: "There was a lot of racist abuse out there from the stands. There was also stones, coins and seats getting thrown at us.”

The Football Association of Serbia also issued a statement, placing the blame on Rose, who, they said, behaved "in inappropriate, unsportsmanlike and vulgar manner towards the supporters on the stands at the stadium in Krusevac."

Serbian player Milos Ninkovic, left, and England's Danny Rose, right, and Craig Dawson, center, clash during the match.

The statement went on to say: “FA of Serbia absolutely refuses and denies that there were any occurrences of racism before and during the match at the stadium in Krusevac.”

Serbia’s soccer fans are notorious for causing trouble at home and abroad. The European governing body,  UEFA, awarded Italy a 3-0 win over Serbia after a qualifier in Genoa, Italy, in 2010 was stopped when Serbia supporters threw flares and fireworks onto the field, burned a flag and broke barriers.

I'd have to guess this was done to inflame the black players, but it only demonstrates ignorance on multiple levels. Monkeys have tails. Apes do not. So if those responsible were attempting to inflame, they should have made ape sounds - but racists aren't that bright.

A lot of Americans probably don't know this about Serbia, but imagine a nation full of backward rednecks. I mean welfare-sucking, trailer trash, unwashed, white-power rednecks. That's Serbia.

Mickey i read alot of the posts, and its sad that alot of people blame the serbs for the wars, like i said i seen... first hand on what was going on in kosovo, alot of what was going on was blamed on the serbs, i thought was wrong, gettig back to the game, we had a incident that happen not to long ago in detroit. with the detroit pistions' were playing the indiana pacers' and the players were fighting with the fans' all the way in the stands, fist fighting'that was wrong, iam not saying the soccer game was any better, the monkey chanting was 100%wrong, but things like fighting.. and chanting.. can never be stoped, its all based on the fans respect for the players, and the players respect for the fans,no.1 respect for the game

The serbian team should be banned from soccer and the England team should have just packed up and left since the opposing team showed no honor or sportsmanship...end of story. People that display this kind of behavior should be denied the right to participate in any sports or anything else for that matter.

First of all, let us consider the country that this happened in.

A 3rd world country that has beliefs like that has no business playing in world soccer matches.

It take a lot for a soccer crowd to get worse than English soccer fans, but the Serbs have succeeded in setting the bar to new depths. Refs just need to stop the game and assign the win to the opposing team when this happens ... don't let it play out.

Genes of idiots are distributed everywhere on earth, and often appear as racists and nationalists. Those idiots of different races and nationalities don’t realize they all share the same genes derived from apes in Africa.

                It's very simple.

Disqualify the offender, stop the match and move on until they want to win fair and square with good sportsmanship.

                Next?

Just a quick reminder: it was a Serb who laid the basis for the First World War. The Serbs are historically the "trouble is my middle name" people in Europe. I would ban them from international soccer for 2 years and/or no transfers allowed (income for talented players).

Monkey chants!!! How infantile. The only way to stamp out this
type of imbecilic behaviour is to find people whom these mental dwarfs respect
and idolize and have them strongly reject racism and these types of childish
behaviour. Racists’ behaviour in the Caucasian people is deeply ingrained from
centuries of brain-clogging influences from a religion that taught that the
Lord-Creator of the Heavens and Earth had a Caucasian son which led to the
conclusion that The Creator must also be a Caucasian (a carryover from Greek
and Roman mythological gods into Christianity). Anyone who accepted that
foolish belief would then treat other ‘racial’ groups as inferiors and not
worthy to be respected as are the members of the Caucasian ‘race.’ The Caucasian
people have been subtly influenced by false religious concepts into believing
that it was their god given right to conquer and dominate other ethnic groups.
Remember the slogan "the white mans' burden?" That meant that only
the Caucasian race had the superior intelligence to rule the Earth. To those
who think the same way today, President Obama is an affront to them. Him being
president is a confirmation that everything thing that they have been led to
believe about the superiority of the Caucasian 'race' has been a lie. Intelligent
and righteous people from the Caucasian 'race' must stand up and bring to an
end this centuries old ignorant belief. The victims should not be the only ones
                    speaking out against racism.

Look how wild Scotland and other countries get. Some of you are writing in a vein that you expect proper manners and good behavior at soccer matches.

A lot of those "African-English" players are descended from commonwealth immigrants - Britain did have a lot of territory in Africa and Football is the game on that continent as well - not just Europe and Latin America. And they are on that squad because they are good enough to be on the starting 11 - Football Gaffers (Managers) have little time for political correctness in any direction, they are out to win games - otherwise they get sacked (fired)

And as for USMNT members - I point to Tim Howard. Who had to battle Racism, Tourettes syndrome, AND Premier League strikers... A great player.

......and that's why America's soccer teams suck. Our best athletes also find soccer to be a boring, waste of time.

We've had youth soccer since I was a kid (50 years ago), my daughters were both in soccer as small children. My daughters switched to softball and basketball, because soccer sucks.

Nobody cares, except Mexican immigrants, and they're cheering for Mexico's team.

Despite what most people seem to believe our ancestors didn't descent from apes. It most likely is the opposite. Monkeys and apes descended from man. In the Holy Qur'aan G-D says:

'Say: "Shall I tell you who, in the sight of G-D, deserves a yet worse retribution than these? They whom G-D has rejected and whom HE has condemned, and whom HE has turned into apes and swine because they worshipped the powers of evil: these are yet worse in station, and farther astray from the right path [than the mockers]."'

Physcially the apes and pigs have much similarities with humans, but we are not descended from them.

I kind of agree. If we descended from apes, then how come there are still apes, gorillas, etc.

Is this the same god that was mad at the Pharoah, but instead of just killing the Pharoah, he killed all the innocent "first born sons" of Egypt?

I'm thinking THAT God was too stupid to be the "intelligent designer". Isn't it possible that some other, smarter God "designed" the universe, and the Christian god was just a sub-contractor?

Whether it is Nazis hating Jews, liberated women hating conservative men, blacks hating whites hating blacks, orientals hating anyone different at all - that's the way humanity is wired. Trying to deny and change it is just like trying to "retrain" a gay person - it's built into the system! Maybe we should be trying to accept the fact instead of denying it, and then figuring out how we can all work together, accepting that we are different!
