Syrian helicopter reportedly downed by rebels over Idlib

A video reportedly shot by an amateur in the Syrian city of Idlib Wednesday shows a crippled Syrian military helicopter spiraling down before it explodes in flames. Syrian rebels say they shot down the helicopter, according to The Telegraph.

The rebels reportedly have acquired heavy weapons in recent weeks, The Telegraph reported, pushing the Syrian air force to attack rebel-held zones from higher altitudes.

Syria's divided rebels have agreed to set up a joint leadership to oversee their battle to overthrow President Bashar Assad, two insurgent sources said Tuesday as fighting raged in cities across the country.

Rebels hope the decision, taken after increasing pressure from foreign supporters on them to unite, will help convince those backers that they are a credible and coordinated fighting force deserving to be supplied with more powerful weapons.

'Extremely dangerous': Assad forces use cluster bombs as rebels gain, rights group says

"The agreement has been reached, they only need to sign it now," one rebel source said. Foreign supporters "are telling us: 'Sort yourselves out and unite, we need a clear and credible side to provide it with quality weapons.'"

He said Qatar and Turkey were the main drivers behind the agreement, which he added might be formally announced this month.

Since the beginning of the revolt against Assad, Western powers have been reluctant to arm the divided rebel factions.

This is the latest attempt to bring together Assad's disparate armed opponents, most of whom have fought nominally under the banner of the rebel Free Syrian Army but who in practice have operated independently, often weakened by deep rivalries.

More weapons in Syria could trigger 'all-out war'

The new leadership will include FSA leaders Riad al-Asaad and Mustafa Sheikh - criticized by many rebels because they are based in Turkey - and recently defected Gen. Mohammad Haj Ali, as well as heads of rebel provincial military councils inside Syria like Qassem Saadeddine, based in Homs province.

A look back at the violence that has overtaken the country.

The Syrian National Council has set Nov. 4 as the date for an opposition unity conference in Qatar, organizers said.

The 19-month-old revolt against Assad, which started as peaceful demonstrations, has mushroomed into a civil war, pitting the mainly Sunni Muslim rebels against a power structure dominated by the Alawite minority.

Activists say more than 30,000 people have been killed, hundreds of thousands have fled to neighboring countries and more than a million have been displaced inside Syria as entire city districts have been rendered ghost towns by heavy shelling.

The British Observatory for Human Rights said 80 people had been killed in Syria by dusk on Tuesday, after 160 died on Monday. Heavy clashes broke out in the city of Hama, and fighting continued in Aleppo and the northern province of Idlib.

A Reuters correspondent on Lebanon's northeastern border with Syria saw a helicopter dropping explosives on the Syrian side of the frontier. Refugees unloading blankets from a pickup truck in an olive grove on the Lebanese side stopped to watch big black plumes of smoke rising into the sky.

Underlining increasing international concern about the conflict, Pope Benedict will send a group of top cardinals to visit Syria in coming days to express solidarity with its battered population, the Vatican news service said.

Envoy seeks ceasefire
U.N.-Arab League mediator Lakhdar Brahimi has called on Shiite Muslim Iran, Assad's closest regional ally, to help arrange a ceasefire in Syria during the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha later this month.

NATO leaders discuss the volatile situation along the Turkish-Syrian border following last week's shelling of a village by forces loyal to Syria's government. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

Diplomatic sources said Brahimi is also trying to persuade Assad and the rebels to accept a ceasefire and allow U.N. monitors into the country to oversee it.

Brahimi, who took over after Kofi Annan quit in frustration in August, has been traveling around the Middle East trying to nudge regional powers into accepting his plan, which resembles a ceasefire Annan tried in vain to implement, U.N. diplomats said.

But diplomatic sources familiar with Brahimi's proposals said that neither Assad's government nor the fractious opposition had shown interest in halting the conflict.

Major powers at the United Nations remain deadlocked over what to do to defuse Syria's conflict.

Outgunned rebels have struggled to turn the tide of conflict against government forces endowed with tanks, jets and helicopter gunships. But Western powers have been reluctant to arm the insurgents because they perceive no coherent leadership and fear that weapons are ending up in the hands of Islamist militants increasingly evident in the conflict.

Mistrust and miscommunication have dominated relations between rebel brigades and each privately accuse the other of incompetence. Differences over leadership, tactics and sources of funding have also widened rifts between largely autonomous brigades scattered across Syria.

The rebel sources said countries who have supported the revolt but whose own rivalries have exacerbated rebel divisions agreed that it was time the rebels fight side by side.

"There will never be unity inside Syria unless the countries supporting the revolt agree because each group is supported and backed by (one) country," one source said.

"Now the countries are becoming nervous and the Syrian issue has become bigger than they expected and almost out of control."

Rebel leaders believe a common fighting front would enable coordination of multifaceted operations crucial to success against a better armed adversary.

"If a brigade wants to hit a (government) checkpoint,  then an intelligence unit would check it out and then raise a report up to the (regional) command. The command will take a decision on the number of men needed for this operation and the kind of weapons plus other issues," another rebel source said.

Reuters contributed to this report.

The UN wanted to negotiate a cease fire so they could send in monitors. LOLOLOLOL. Ya right. Neither the Syrian Government or the Rebels want a bunch of do nothing UN foreigners coming in to run the show. You gotta be kidding me. Why doesn't the UN try to do something that is actually productive for once.

Apparently the helicopter had just delivered a recently released youtube video of Syrian Rebels engageing in physical relations with goats.

This was not a planned attack, it was spontaneous in nature and grew out of a protest that had started earlier.

The maker of the film has been arrested for producing such a vile, disgusting thing. President Assad condemned the man made catastrophy while giving a speech from the capital's Rose Garden.

Yeah straight from Obama through his buddies in the Muslim Brotherhood. The same weapons the Muslim Brotherhood is funneling to Al Qaeda for use in the attacks on our embassies and the assasination of our ambassadors.

The United States and NATO took military actions against "Yugoslavia" to support the Islamic mercenaries from Afghanistan, Iran Turkey, the Middle East and as far as Indonesia and the Philippines to fight against the Christians in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo, and what happened? The Americans got 9/11 instead of gratitude. Why is it that Americans are such suckers for punishment? Blindly backing the rebels out of some twisted moral self indulgence will only open another can of worms and incur further multiple deadly backlash against Americans. There is no loathing people harbour more intense than that towards their benefactor(s). But both Democrats and Republicans (most of whom are still fighting the Cold War) are too thick to grasp that.

Damn Al-Qaeda must have millions and millions of members/followers according to some of the people here... What is the population of Syria? How many Al-Qaeda members are there? Why do you say "Al-Qaeda" when the vast majority are Syrians? In this one case Al-Qaeda and us are on the same side just like we and the Taliban once were (Hell we even supported Saddam, the Shaw of Iran, French in Vietnam, etc.). They give weapons and money to the rebels too. They want the same thing as we do. The Muslim Brotherhood does as well. The only country that really supports Assad in the region is Iran (Iraq a little). Just annoying to hear people say buzz words like Al-Qaeda over and over again when THEY ARE F***ING SYRIANS.

People on both sides just love to beat those war drums to further their own agendas. They love trying to instill fear and scare people into siding with "their" side. It is how they stay in power and control the masses.

Just give the arabs Judea and Samaria and East Jerusalem, (per Ovomit), and the arabs will play nice. and if Israel is left with a 9 mile wide country that cant be defended, well the arabs wont attack, we gave em land and moved the Jews out, Just like in Gush Katif, I mean, the Gaza Strip.

Fact: over 55 rockets hit southern Israel in the last three days! This is our reality in Israel. Can you imagine hearing rocket sirens and booms everyday? Do you hear about this in the news? Is the world up in arms? Is the UN convening to draft a resolution against the Hamas for firing rockets on innocent civilians? This is is the hypocritical world we live in. Of all the ridiculous comments here, Wire557 makes about the only sense. The choice between the devil or satan is a hell of a dilemma. (pun intended) There are no good choices in Syria. There were no good choices in Iraq. There were no good choices in Afganistan (after we trashed the Taliban). Lesson learned from all the dead and trillions spent in Iraq: We need to stay out of other countries business especially in the Middle east. IF it takes more that a sniper or a drone, it is not worth a single American life.

Seventh century Sunni Saudis, oil companies, Netanyahus and their lobbyists' dances in Syria and Iran are becoming another bunch of jokes like those before Iraqi wars.

After getting badly mauled in Iraq and Afghanistan, who in right senses will get in between centuries of Shiites vs Sunni battles?

80 percent of world problems including economic ones are due to Sunni Saudis and Pakis. Economic mess are due to high oil price manipulations using Iraq's Saddam and Iran as excuses.

Remove sanctions on Iranian oil. Oil prices have shot up from around $40 in 2009 to more than $110 now. These high oil price manipulations are adding another bunch of economic mess all over the world.

Iraqi wars and high oil prices gave us PIIGS and heavy debts in the US.

Superb post. Some never learn even after getting kicks badly in Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan and other places.

Send Hillarys, McCains, Romneys, Libermanns, Netanyahus to battle in Afghanistan first and then Syria and Iran.

Followers of Islamic cult, especially Sunni Saudi inspired Islamic radicals and militants (al-Qaida, Salaffi, Wahhabi, MB, Taliban and other label ones), are fast marching backwards to their seventh century desert tribal days.

They are indulging in rapings, lootings, killings and genocides of non-Muslims (Darfur, S. Sudan, Nigeria and spreading like wild fire in many regions and Muslims (Libya, Mali, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan and other places).

Sunni Saudi backed Salaffi and MB new chapters are opening up in Egypt. Just watch the fate of Christians, women and Israel as the time goes by.

Even in Syria, if Assad is overthrown by Sunni Islamic religious Nazis like al-Qaida, MB, the conditions of Christians will be unbearable just like Iraq.

Pakis and Sunni Saudis and co are responsible for 80 percent of world problems including economic ones.

Examine the devastations with Iraqi wars and now sanctions on Iranian oil and the resultant oil price manipulations.

They are making the lives of their own people also miserable by their Islamic religious madness to the intolerable levels.

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now some reality for YOU. Not sure what point you are trying to make, but you left out IRAQ (Notably, because it is just the OPPOSITE of your Afghanistan summary), given it was an illegal war, supported ONLY by the Three Amigos (US, US & Spain).

But US deaths in Afghanistan did increase each year after 2001, however, there are a two years where the deaths went down - by a whopping "ONE death". It is war, ya know - both started by GWB. Afghanistan had my total support, as well as the rest of the US & the World. I think America accepts the reality of Afghanistan, but now want to get the HELL out, post OBL! America NEVER accepted IRAQ, which is why are are MOSTLY out of there.

Feel free to selectively leave out more stuff next time you post. LOL!

Just what I wanted to say. The camera work here would be embarrassing on YouTube: that chopper was in the frame for almost half the entire sequence. You would think that a rebel cameraman would want to show every second in loving detail...

Surprises me how everyone just watched someone die, a human life lost in a fiery explosion, yet the best thing we can think of to say is "Well his camera work could have been better."

                This isn't Goddamn Hollywood.

Now if you said the birthplace of civilization you would be right because the ancient summerians were among the very first civilizations to arise.

That video looks a fake. For the helicopter to totally vaporize in an explosion would be extremely rare. It could be that it was scuttled but even that would have resulted in some pretty big pieces after the explosion. Plus the "Allah Akbar" yelling sounds pretty rehearsed. I'm calling BS.

Or it was a mechanical failure. It looked to be at very high altitude with no visible SAM trail. They certainly didn't bring it down with an AK.

there is something terribly wrong with anyone shouting God is great as they kill another human being. God never condoned murdering our brothers and sisters. It is a disgrace to God that people commit murder in the name of Him no matter whose side you are on. These are someone's loved ones and that video showed their last horrifying seconds of life. Disgusting, disturbing and sad. War is never the answer, and yet it will never end. I wish everyone could see the planet from outer space and see how it was meant to be...peaceful with nor borders, no racial or religious divisions and one existence.

Agreed on all counts. I didn't watch it and I wouldn't. I saw the Shuttle blow up in Melbourne right above me in 86'. You are correct on the explosion. Just like firing a gun - it's not like the movies. Fire a 9mm without ear protection - you might not hear the rest of the day. And, there's no exciting music in the background.

Obama is a joke and is dividing this country while doing nothing but taking vacations around the world at our expense. He has spent more money than any president in history and he is the most travelled president ever. He has done everything but his job. How is that for responsible?

Looks like the helicopter was suffering engine failure (from being hit by AAA or SAM) and the pilot was attempting to do an autorotation emergency landing, which he appeared to be executing correctly until the helicopter exploded. What probably caused the catastrophic explosion was a direct hit to onboard munitions by AAA fire.

No, he is backing the right choice. Not everything is black and white, republican and liberal. Its people that make their choices based of what their political party believes instead of what they actually believe who are ruining our country. No reason for us to get involved in that country while we are so much in debt and they dont even have a clear goal yet for their civil war. To stay out and let UN actually do something for once (attempt to is more like it) is the correct thing to do. I am not a liberal, but if the right choice is suggested by Obama, then ill support that choice. Doesnt mean I support his whole presidency.

I agree! I am tired of people trying to argue the fact that this religion and its followers are peaceful!!!! Any religion and group of followers who find excuses to shoot a 12 y.o. girl, or kill innocent ppl to fulfill their personal agendas should not be backed or entertained by America. I do not even think these people know what the hell they are fighting for at this point? They are just making @!$%# up as they go along! They are killing everyone who does not believe in their own ideals and their 72 virgin crap! I say lets stay the hell out of it, and let the whole ME just destroy each other.
