The Democrats do not want to talk about who is to blame because it is Obama and Clinton who are to blame. There were repeated requests for increased security in Libya by the Ambassador and his security team. These requests fell on deaf ears in the administration. Obama had caved in to the Libyans when they did not want to have a Marine detachment or private security contractors protecting the embassy and consulate. Obama allowed himself to be dictated to by some third world leader into using only local security people, many of whom were not even allowed to be armed and who certainly had no loyalty. This was borne out in the fact that several of the security personnel were complicit in the attack on the consulate. The fault for this tragedy lies squarely on Clinton's and Obama's shoulders, that is why they do not want to talk about who is to blame. On top of that, in an attempt to hide their failure and cover up what really happened, they tried to sell a story that the attack was spontaneous as a result of that stupid internet video. They knew full well that it was a planned terrorist attack because they already had intelligence indicating it was coming. They did not want this to be known because it makes them look even worse for denying the requests for added security. Clinton and Obama had warning that something was coming in Libya yet did nothing to guard against it and denied those on the ground when they requests help. If they were the head of a civilian security company instead of politicians some DA would have already charged them with depraved indifference murder in the deaths of the four American because they knew of the danger and did nothing to mitigate it.

POLITICO – The consulate where the American ambassador to Libya was killed on Tuesday is an "interim facility" not protected by the contingent of Marines that safeguards embassies, POLITICO has learned.

Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed with three other Americans in an attack on the U.S. consulate in the city of Benghazi, where Libyan rebels ousted strongman Moammar Qadhafi last year.

Marine Corps spokeswoman Capt. Kendra Motz said that Marines were not posted to the consulate, unlike the embassy in the capital, Tripoli.

A defense official told POLITICO on Wednesday that the Pentagon is sending an elite team of about 50 additional Marines, called a Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team, to reinforce the embassy.

A senior administration official Wednesday called the Benghazi consulate "an interim facility," which the State Department began using "before the fall of Qadhafi." It was staffed Tuesday by Libyan and State Department security officers. The consulate came under fire from heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades at about 10 p.m. local time on Tuesday. By the time the attack ended several hours later, four Americans were dead and three others had been injured.

The Benghazi consulate had "lock-and-key" security, not the same level of defenses as a formal embassy, an intelligence source told POLITICO. That means it had no bulletproof glass, reinforced doors or other features common to embassies. The intelligence source contrasted it with the American embassy in Cairo, Egypt – "a permanent facility, which is a lot easier to defend." The Cairo embassy also was attacked Tuesday.

Obama sent 50 Marines to Libya today to staff our consulate there. It's a shame it took the death of our Ambassador and three of his staff members to make that happen.

Why isn't the press asking Obama about this? Oh I forgot, they're still obsessed with the timing of Romney's criticism. Yeah, that's a bigger issue.

UPDATE: Just to make the point a little finer, Levin wonders why Obama didn't "beef up" the staffing at our embassies around the world simply because it was the anniversary of 9/11. He wants the press to ask Obama about that.

Off topic but when you compare the U.S, to other Countries that practice Strict Gun Control we come below them. Sweden and Norway have higher rates of violent crime per population average as does the U.K., France, and China. After looking at the Statistics on Gun Control I'm not impressed. About two-thirds of the hospitals serving Medicare patients, or some 2,200 facilities, will be hit with penalties averaging around $125,000 per facility this coming year, according to government estimates… For the first year, the penalty is capped at 1 percent of a hospital’s Medicare payments. The overwhelming majority of penalized facilities will pay less. Also, for now, hospitals are only being measured on three medical conditions: heart attacks, heart failure and pneumonia. . . . Under the health care law, the penalties gradually will rise until 3 percent of Medicare payments to hospitals are at risk.

Hospitals and doctors are already seeing decreasing reimbursements from Medicare, even less than what they were prior to Obamacare. This means that hospitals have had to cut hospital stays short in order to remain in the black, and patients are being discharged before they’re ready. And now, if they come back within 30 days of being discharged, the hospital is subject to a new fine. It’s all part of cutting costs and making healthcare more affordable.

For those who are “healthy, wealthy and wise,” this measure changes nothing. But for those who are poor, sick, disabled or old, it means that their healthcare may become so expensive, it might cost them their life. This is the liberals’ version of compassion. Depriving the most vulnerable of people from healthcare is simply “for their own good.” These individuals are too expensive to care for and therefore not worth saving. Two simple points I'd like to clarify about your post. It was Mr. Carter that signed the CRA, and it was Mr. Clinton that signed the extension and modifications to the CRA. My point is that the problem began a long time ago, long before Mr. Clinton was president. He just made it far worse.

And Mr. Bush went to Congress with a reform proposal to change how Fannie and Freddie did business so that the bubble would at least stop being inflated. Democrats in Congress didn't just block any and all reforms, they also said that Mr. Bush simply wanted to harm poor people and minorities. Maxine Waters, Bobby Scott, Alcie Hastings, among others, called Mr. Bush a racist for wanting to make changes. Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, among others, said nothing at all was wrong with the housing mortgage industry, including F and F.

For fun people should look at the distribution of political donations made by F and F. They overwhelmingly, meaning nearly all of them, went to democrats. Reforms weren't seen is racist--those were lies told by liberals to try to keep people from considering support for those reforms. No, the reforms were seen as an attack by republicans on a major source of campaign funds. Think about it...democrats helped ruin our economy and further burden our kids so they could have an easier time getting elected to office.

There is an alternative explanation which is worth considering. Instead of being conniving, disingenuous, and duplicitous, elected democrats might instead simply be incompetent. I prefer the former since it implies democrats are smart, just very unwise. The latter explanation puts the USA in the position of being able to do nothing right but through dumb luck. If you are being forced out it is because of the force draw-down and failure to live up to the retention standards put in place by The Department of the Navy. Every branch of the service has retention standards which are managed through Qualitative Management Programs (QMP). Every branch of the service has early retirement programs for periods of force reductions. None of the branches arbitrarily get rid of their best and brightest (that's counter productive). You don't make rank fast enough you're not retained. You get passed up by a promotion board, your not retained. It's not Obama pulling those strings, it is the Pentagon drawing down the forces because a war has ended and budgetary cuts are looming (820 billion put in place by Republicans as a concession for voting to raise the debt ceiling).

I would suggest you place your 30k in the bank and take advantage of your Post 9/11 GI bill benefits. Where else are you going to get 4 years of college tuition paid for, all your books paid for, and a living expense stipend each month, so long as you attend for 6 credits a semester. You can even apply for student loans, cuz guess what, the package is tax free.

By the way, that college package; thank Obama for that one.

21 Years Retired here also funky... And worked in the Separations/Retirement branch for over 6 years (I was stations at HQ AF Randolph AFB, TX... Ya know the place where they interpret the rules and then pass them down to the Numbered AF's) ... I had to know what the VA would and would not covered and I also had to know what the requirements were for a RIF...

And as far as the 'RIF' went, it was almost like a lottery...

They cut a Block of people and then you could take your chances to stay in and risk getting cut, or taking a 'Buy Out' and get out with a better settlement.

Not sure which service you were in but in some of them, they don't promote you by the amount of dirt you can eat or how much you can hump on your back all day.

And I am sorry, But I have to side with Navy on this one.

NAVY: IF by chance you do collect VA Benefits, DO NOT LET THEM TAKE BACK the TAXES that you paid on you separation pay... There is a LAW on the Books that prevents that... I know I submitted it to my Senator back in 1990's and it was passed.

I just remember reading in the news (on this site two years or so ago, I think) about how McCrystal was critical of Obama, and Obama wanted to get rid of him. I recall the article saying that he was a very skilled military man. His was a great loss...all because of Obama's wounded ego.

That was interesting about Kadaffy. A long time ago, early 90's or so, a guy I knew, an anarcho-syndicalist, had a copy of Kadaffy's Green Book. He let me read it. I remember it sounded very progressive, and I thought that well maybe Kadaffy was not such a bad guy. I had not heard anyone mention this book in all this time. This person I knew had a way of finding some very radical and unusual literature.

It seems like what always happens is that the U.S. comes into a place and removes some strong man; and after we do, the situation has a way of getting worse.

This whole embassy thing is messed up too. When the news broke, they said the building was destroyed and the ambassador killed. They said a safe house was trashed. Then Obama and Co. kept saying for two weeks it was all because of some video and was a spontaneous protest. The pictures showed these huge mortar shells lying on the ground (not the sorts of things generally seen at protests). And...how would protesters know where a safe house was? What was coming out of the white house lacked believability. I have been on a number of protests. I never went to one where people had mortars or where people knew where to find a secret safe house. It seems the more the White House covers it up, the worse it gets. It is turning into Watergate. I just don't know why they would want to not protect an ambassador. Now Obama has fessed up that it is terrorism, finally; but I no longer hear them talk about the safe house. They seemed to have forgotten about that.

I sided with The General when Obama threw him out. David, respectfully I don't doubt your information or the depth of your work. However, you also should know that in any investigation all the facts are relevant. Your argument regarding cuts is one factor but the Clinton administration in this instance is not solely at fault. If you were that involved then you would also know that there were several U.S. field intelligence sources who notified their superiors of the impending threat. You also would be keenly aware of the daily briefings the president receives including intelligence concerns. The 9/11 Commission a bipartisian panel realized and showed that the Clinton transition team notified the Bush team of it's concerns prior to 9/11. When Bush's team was in place several memo's regarding the threats were considered and determined as not serious. This information is in the 9/11 Commission's report and was made public upon it's findings. The memo's including as I said one five weeks pre 9/11 played a major role in that despite repeated warnings and concerns by those in the intelligence community the Bush administration dismissed their significance. I am not accustomed to putting forth "manure," as credible information. I am sure I can find on any given day opposing views of what size the military, intelligence or any other area of the government should be. Experts abound along with opposing assessments but at the end of the day it's the facts that support the final analysis. You obviously feel based on your experience that the Clinton cuts were far to deep and the sole contributing factor despite the findings of the commission.

I haven't read through the comments but wanted to point out some things that people here may or may not be aware but that seem to be missing from the reporting on Benghazi. Based on security concerns, U.S. embassies at times will impose travel restrictions on American personnel which limits their movements in country. This happened to me a few years back while serving in a South Asian country in the news lately. The impetus for this decision comes from internal analysis by the post security officer subject to the approval of the ambassador. This travel restriction then impacts all American personnel including the ambassador based on the notion that Americans in diplomatic vehicles , usually identifiable locally by their license plates, are at risk in a given location no matter whether involving the ambassador or a third secretary.

The other item that seems missing is that if the security situation in the capital city such as Tripoli, Libya becomes dangerous in the extreme, there is a mechanism for going to Washington to draw down the complement of American personnel to reduce the exposure to risk or to close the embassy altogether.

I raise these points because everyone who has served in the State Department knows that beefing up security does not happen instantaneously in the best of cases and involves a brokered process in a world where security funds are scarcer than the need for them. I'm not going to second guess anyone who was serving in Libya but everything I've just written was known to key decision makers as they grappled with decisions on staff strength to maintain at the embassy and in-country travel away from the embassy. As someone who has served at both embassies and consulates (in provincial cities), I can tell you that members of Congress and congressional staffers far less frequently travel away from the capital and it's only the select few that have any sense of what life is like in a provincial city in a developing country such as Libya.

It's also important to remember that attacks on embassies are not new and the attacks don't respect the partisan nature of the U.S. government of the moment. We've had attacks against U.S. embassies in Teheran and Islamabad under President Carter, Beirut under President Reagan, Nairobi and Dar es Salaam under President Clinton and Tashkent under President Bush. If you think a muscular U.S. presence around the world prevents these attacks then you are only kidding yourself.

VH Navy, respectfully I am at a loss to find any information regarding a video of the president at the UN saying he was sorry that we allow free speech. I did in fact locate video of the president's speech to the UN post the horrific attack at the Benghazi consulate. The president condemed the violence sparked by the video. He described the video as "crude and disgusting," while strongly defending free speech. He made clear the video was a product of free speech and not a production of the U.S. government. He needed to establish our respect for the freedom of speech and that the views in the video were not those of our government. You most likely are also aware his speech was broadly directed due to the extent of the protests around the world result of the video. If you had spent anytime overseas you assuredly would know that customs and cultures differ greatly. What we dimiss at times as trivial is insulting or offensive to others rendering diplomacy to less than an ideal delicate balance. I have not read anywhere that Ambassador Stevens and the three other Americans killed were ordered to leave the embassy in Tripoli and travel to a poorly secured consulate in Benghazi on the anniversary of 9/11. People in foreign service, especially in such volatile areas of the world, are taking personal risks, they know they are at risk and they make the decision about how to manage it and whether to give in to it. It is no different than mililtary personnel signing up knowing they may go to war and police leaving home every morning going to work no knowing if they are coming home. People in such professions recognize the risks, make choices whether the risk is worth the potential good and then carry on. I am sure the victims did not expect to be attacked and die, but they had to know they were at risk for such an event at any time in an unstable country in transition and accepted the risks.

We can learn from this failure and adjust our security standards, but we can never achieve perfect safety in a dangerous world.

What is so bad about that? As I see it Obama has been taking the correct actions in his leadership on behalf of American citizens and the world community in this area. Another reason to vote for a cool head prevailing and not an emotional cowboy saying "bring it on". Again I make my point, presidents are not in vacuums, there are hundreds of other officials around them in government standing their posts, actively making decisions from the designated authority of those posts. It is a shame to take partisan shots and politicize security and defense issues for campaign purposes, but it is valid to question investigations into mistakes or corruption and information leaks, bribes, blackmail or other ties within defense organizations to other countries or their contributions of money and information that could create a weakness, compromise, or risk of the well being and domestic safety of American citizens.

The investigation into 9/11 was both valid and very necessary. So is this investigation ongoing. But neither are partisan issues. They are American issues. If anyone knows this -Obama knows this. It was one of his primary points in his first speech at the Democratic convention years ago. Many of those in the coalition of the left feel that he has taken too much effort and time, bent over too far backwards in trying to work toward compromises with the Republicans and he has BEEN MAKING A FUTILE EFFORT. It is too bad the Republicans have not been reciprocal with all that stubborn cliquish filibustering, (a la Norquist pact), in any attempts to meet him in the middle on some things so that we could benefit more efficiently and quickly in repairing and building back our nation this last four years. PBS did a very enlightening hour on it and it was Saddam himself that created false intel because he was concerned about being attacked by Syria. How could this be if we all knew back then that Clinton knew about Osama Bin Laden and the problems coming from that quarter. How could this be when we all knew that Clinton did warn Bush 2 of the obvious terrorist threats, or do you not remember? There had already been an attempt to blow up the twin towers. The rest of all that you have listed is history and unfortunately, the consequences of not taking the proper clever and preventative measures. I remember reading some years ago that they were being watched from the sky and could have been bombed but were not. I am sure there are others who can verify, add to or rebut your details above. Peace is a wonderful and wise achievement for many on this planet. Europe knew, but America had no clue when this started and it was then creeping our way. Living in Europe, it was very frustrating and frightening to watch it grow. It grew from propaganda and misinformation of what America was like, not countered by anyone who knew better because there was no one who could stop those rumors, notions and beliefs from spreading amongst people who had never set foot upon American soil. There were no Americans over there to argue back for one thing. Those who visited were never around long enough to catch on or hear the private remarks behind their backs. Most were tourists passing through on summer vacations, never wandering from their planned itineraries, never acculturated or speaking the local lingo or living in the back neighborhoods or following the native customs. Most were out having fun and did not really care about or appreciate the native customs. For those with family or who stayed long enough, the differences were cultural, but those barriers to understanding and communication can be overcome in time with genuine interest and effort to learn the ways of other cultures. After seeing war, living oppression, getting around corruption, suffering betrayal, and feeling the pain...most people prefer working toward the alternative which is ultimately the prize of peace which offers a more comfortable life.
Peace is also a health issue beyond politics and it has to be worked on to keep around. Here is to your continued survival and hopefully more of a heavenly experience on earth. Of course, it is up to each of us to create peace and our survival from our thoughts to our actions by way of our motives. Thus the saying, "Let there be Peace and let it begin with me". #1. It is not a partisan issue it is an American defence and security issue.
#2. Stop putting this president in a vacuum, there is a big government around him with many divisions, people and posts and Obama did not have anything to do with how the members of Congress voted.

It is still a fact that members of Congress including many Republicans, voted wrong on making sure there were enough funds for sufficient security abroad at our stations for our diplomats. In this case singular human error only goes so far, there were many involved in this, none of them directly in touch with President Obama at the time.
Stop the blame gaming and President bashing. It just does not apply here. The investigation is still ongoing. Unfortunately the losses cannot be undone.

Budget cuts were not a problem when it came to spending money on chargers for green cars and gala events to promote green energy. If they had the money for these types of things, then they should have had the money for increased security.
