A senior administration official told NBC on Saturday that there have been back-channel talks between the U.S. and Iran about meeting bilaterally on the Iranians’ nuclear program – but that no meeting has been agreed to.
Expanding on a statement issued by the White House after The New York Times reported that there was an agreement, the official says that the backchannel talks have been done in full consultation with the allies – the P5 + 1 and Israel.
The official pointed out that there have been bilateral talks in the past – but that Iran refused to even meet with the P5 +1 during the recent United Nations meetings. He said the Iranians know there will be no agreement unless they give up their nuclear program.
Asked about the impact on Monday's foreign policy debate between President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney, the official said the administration is not happy that the story came out before the debate, but said the American people might be happy to know the administration is willing to explore all possibilities to get Iran to give up its nuclear program.
The Times, citing a senior administration official, said Iranian officials had insisted that the talks wait until after the presidential election so that they would know which president would be negotiating with them. The Times said: "Reports of the agreement have circulated among a small group of diplomats involved with Iran."
But in a statement Saturday evening, National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said the U.S. and Iran had no such agreement:
It's not true that the United States and Iran have agreed to one-on-one talks or any meeting after the American elections. We continue to work with the P-5+1 on a diplomatic solution and have said from the outset that we would be prepared to meet bilaterally. The President has made clear that he will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, and we will do what we must to achieve that. It has always been our goal for sanctions to pressure Iran to come in line with its obligations. The onus is on the Iranians to do so, otherwise they will continue to face crippling sanctions and increased pressure.
World powers accuse Iran of covertly using its uranium enrichment program to produce nuclear weapons. The Iranians insists the research and development is for projects to generate electricity and produce medical isotopes.
EU agrees on wider Iran sanctions
A six-country alliance of Western powers, including the United States, has been attempting to negotiate with the Iranians, with occasional concessions by Iran and assertions that it’s willing to engage with the alliance. Despite the protracted dialogue, diplomats hope that a negotiated settlement can be reached, with international sanctions providing an incentive.
In October 2009, the U.S and the Iranians agreed in Geneva that Iran would send its enriched uranium to Russia for safekeeping, in exchange for an agreement for enough nuclear fuel for its Tehran medical research reactor. However, the deal fell apart when Iran's negotiators returned home. Iranian officials told NBC News that their supreme leader, the Ayatollah Khomeini, told them they had gone beyond their instructions. That experience has made the White House wary of any agreement that is not blessed by the supreme leader, the sole authority over nuclear decisions in Iran.
The sanctions began to bite this summer. Hyperinflation in Iran is pushing up prices daily and the dramatic slide in the value of the rial against the U.S. dollar led to unrest in Tehran earlier this month, when angry currency traders clashed with security forces.
The European Union on Monday ratcheted up its sanctions, prohibiting transactions between Iranian and European banks and banning imports of Iranian natural gas, among other measures.

Israel, believed to have the Middle East's only atomic arsenal, sees a nuclear-armed Iran as a threat to its existence and has expressed frustration over the failure of diplomacy and sanctions to rein in Tehran. Western nations fear that a possible strike against Iran's facilities by Israel would lead to wider conflict.

Remember when Obama told us that he would simply sit down, face to face, with the Iranian leadership and this would all be resolved. He didn't even attempt it. Instead, he sent Hillary on a year and a half wild goose chase of trying to negotiate with Iran. While the Iranians used the "negotiations "as a stall tactic. During that time frame they increased the number of centrifuges making enriched uranium, beefed up their conventional arsenal and worked on missile delivery systems. At the end of that year and a half we didn't even have the outline of an agreement. The "talks" utterly failed. And no progress towards an agreement has been made since then. Zero, Instead Iran is now engaging in cyber warfare attacks on our financial institutions, aiding Assad in Syria, assisting terrorist throughout the region, etc...
FAILURE.
Just another failure by Obama and his administration. If it wasn't for wrong decisions, he couldn't make one.

"If you check President Obama's last trip over-seas, his wife left just after their visit to France . She has yet to accompany him to any Arab country. Think about it. Why is Michelle returning to the states when 'official' trips to foreign countries generally include the First Lady.
Here's one thought on the matter. While in a Blockbuster renting videos I came across a video called
"Obama". There were two men standing next to me and we talked about President Obama. These guys were Arabs, so I asked them why they thought Michelle Obama headed home following the President's recent visit to France instead of traveling on to Saudi Arabia and Turkey with her husband. They told me she could not go to Saudi Arabia , Turkey or Iraq . I said "Why not,(?) Laura Bush went to Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Dubai." They said that Obama is a Muslim and therefore he is not allowed to bring his wife into countries that adhere to Sharia Law.
Two points of interest here:
1) I thought it interesting that two American Arabs at Blockbuster believe that our President is a Muslim, who follows a strict Islamic creed.
2) They also said that's the reason he bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia . It was a signal to the Muslim world, acknowledging his religion.
For further consideration, here is a response from Dr. Jim Murk, a Middle Eastern Scholar and expert on Islam. This is his explanation of what the Arab American's were saying.

Why has Barack Hussein Obama insisted that the U.S. Attorney General hold the trials of the 911 Muslim Terrorists in Civilian Courts as Common Criminals instead of as Terrorists who attacked the United States of America ? If the Muslim Terrorists are tried in Military Tribunals, convicted and sentenced to death, by LAW, Barack Hussein Obama, as President of the United States , would be required to sign their death warrants. He would not be required to sign the death warrants if they are sentenced to death by a Civilian Court . Muslim Jihadist, Army Major Hassan slaughtered non-Muslim soldiers at Ft. Hood, Texas rather than go to Afghanistan and be a part of anything that could lead to the deaths of fellow Muslims. He stated that Muslims 'could not and should not kill fellow Muslims.' Is the motive for Barack Hussein Obama's insistence on civilian trials, to make sure he doesn't have to sign the death warrants for the Muslim Terrorists? The economy IS getting better. 4 million jobs created in the last 30 months. The DOW doubled. GDP growing every month since mid 2009.
Four million jobs in 30 months does not even keep up with the growth in population. Reagan was creating 600,000 jobs a month with a much lower population base and a lower GDP. Do the math.

Again, do the math. The A-6 rate of unemployment 4 years later is over 14%. The rate of unemployment for minorities and women is over 10%. The rate of unemployment for African american youth is over 50%. What more do you need?

golfsleft: You want to discuss the auto industry? The US government is underwater $30 billion on the auto industry deal. It will never get the money back. GM is on life support for only one reason-to protect the unions-the single largest campaign contributor to Obama. Moreover, right now GM is using our tax dollars to build a manufacturing plant in Russia.
Strawman arguement. You still can't dispute the stimulus saved thousands of jobs or that over 4 million new jobs have been created in the last 30 months.
Oh, and the GM plant in Russia was built in 2008.
Bucket: If GM had gone through a normal Chapter 11 bankruptcy it would have come out of the bankruptcy a stronger and leaner company, able to compete with Toyota. However, the labor unions would have lost their legacy benefits. Obama couldn't have his best contributors do that, so he used our tax money to save the unions at the expense of the US taxpayer. I believe they call that "crony capitalism."

Were you aware that the US government made a profit of $27 billion on the "evil" TARP loans. Obama can't advertise that because it makes him look too stupid.
You're contradicting yourself. First you say the stimulus was a waste of taxpayer money and then say the TARP loans made a $27 billion profit.
Wow is that Apples to Oranges. The stimulus program and the Tarp loans were different animals. My point is that the bail out of Wall Street was done at a profit to the taxpayer. The bailout of GM was not.

DUH Earth to golfsleft, Earth to golfsleft! The Stimulus and TARP are two seperate issues! TARP was requested by and granted to Bush '43', who spent aproximately 1/3 of it and left 2/3 for Obama. The Stimulus was developed totally during Obama's Administration !
