Source: Back-channel talks but no US-Iran deal on one-to-one nuclear meeting

Digital Globe / AP file

A 2004 satellite image provided by DigitalGlobe and the Institute for Science and International Security shows the military complex at Parchin, Iran, about 19 miles southeast of Tehran.

A senior administration official told NBC on Saturday that there have been back-channel talks between the U.S. and Iran about meeting bilaterally on the Iranians’ nuclear program – but that no meeting has been agreed to.

Expanding on a statement issued by the White House after The New York Times reported that there was an agreement, the official says that the backchannel talks have been done in full consultation with the allies – the P5 + 1 and Israel.

The official pointed out that there have been bilateral talks in the past – but that Iran refused to even meet with the P5 +1 during the recent United Nations meetings. He said the Iranians know there will be no agreement unless they give up their nuclear program.

Asked about the impact on Monday's foreign policy debate between President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney, the official said the administration is not happy that the story came out before the debate, but said the American people might be happy to know the administration is willing to explore all possibilities to get Iran to give up its nuclear program.

The Times, citing a senior administration official, said Iranian officials had insisted that the talks wait until after the presidential election so that they would know which president would be negotiating with them. The Times said: "Reports of the agreement have circulated among a small group of diplomats involved with Iran."

But in a statement Saturday evening, National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said the U.S. and Iran had no such agreement:

It's not true that the United States and Iran have agreed to one-on-one talks or any meeting after the American elections. We continue to work with the P-5+1 on a diplomatic solution and have said from the outset that we would be prepared to meet bilaterally. The President has made clear that he will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, and we will do what we must to achieve that. It has always been our goal for sanctions to pressure Iran to come in line with its obligations. The onus is on the Iranians to do so, otherwise they will continue to face crippling sanctions and increased pressure.

World powers accuse Iran of covertly using its uranium enrichment program to produce nuclear weapons. The Iranians insists the research and development is for projects to generate electricity and produce medical isotopes.

EU agrees on wider Iran sanctions

A six-country alliance of Western powers, including the United States, has been attempting to negotiate with the Iranians, with occasional concessions by Iran and assertions that it’s willing to engage with the alliance. Despite the protracted dialogue, diplomats hope that a negotiated settlement can be reached, with international sanctions providing an incentive.

In October 2009, the U.S and the Iranians agreed in Geneva that Iran would send its enriched uranium to Russia for safekeeping, in exchange for an agreement for enough nuclear fuel for its Tehran medical research reactor. However, the deal fell apart when Iran's negotiators returned home. Iranian officials told NBC News that their supreme leader, the Ayatollah Khomeini, told them they had gone beyond their instructions. That experience has made the White House wary of any agreement that is not blessed by the supreme leader, the sole authority over nuclear decisions in Iran.

The sanctions began to bite this summer. Hyperinflation in Iran is pushing up prices daily and the dramatic slide in the value of the rial against the U.S. dollar led to unrest in Tehran earlier this month, when angry currency traders clashed with security forces.

The European Union on Monday ratcheted up its sanctions, prohibiting transactions between Iranian and European banks and banning imports of Iranian natural gas, among other measures.

Netanyahu: Draw 'clear red line' to stop Iran

Israel, believed to have the Middle East's only atomic arsenal, sees a nuclear-armed Iran as a threat to its existence and has expressed frustration over the failure of diplomacy and sanctions to rein in Tehran. Western nations fear that a possible strike against Iran's facilities by Israel would lead to wider conflict.

Bob Beckel, ultra-liberal moron, on Fox News yesterday: "Are you actually trying to compare Watergate to this thing in Benghazi?" Actually Bob, Benghazigate if FAR worse than Watergate, which was a cover-up about a break-in at the Watergate building. Four Americans, including the first US Ambassador since 1979, were killed in Benghazi! Benghazigate is FAR, FAR worse than Watergate, where no one was killed!

I think you should go back in history about your statement. Watergate was about the about abuse of power or using the power to hide information.

Mitt can't win on who he is, THAT's what you're admitting to, get it?

@Bucket: Most Americans live in a world where they are unaware of the technological advances that were in place at the time of the attack. In fact, there were two attacks that preceeded the one on September 11th. There are structural standards for US Department activities. Those standards were waived by someone in the US State Department. A decision was made to withdraw security levels after the two attacks, in spite of requests from the Ambassador and others. Who? and Why? The responsibility of the intelligence community is to provide as much information as it becomes available. There is no doubt that the narrative the administration chose was among the many narratives that were produced from the raw intelligence. The problem is that, in real time, the administration and intelligence community were fully aware that there was no demonstration and that the attack was coordinated by a "militant" group.

It doesn't take a long, drawn out investigation to determine that the information provided by UN Ambassador Susan Rice was a known falsehood. As far as politics goes, of all the narratives available, why choose one that was filled with lies?

Clearly, Mitt failed to capitalize on the situation in the debate. Ms. Crowley's unprecedented input as a moderator added controversy. Unfortunately, it has forced all media to continue to cover the story and as the onion is peeled back, the more information that comes out, leads to more questions and further proof that the narrative from the White House was a known lie prior to announcing it in a Congressional Hearing on September 19th.

GET OVER, Enjoying your wet dream fella???

For 40 years the Right has dreamed of inflicting their own Watergate on Democrats and it hasn't happened yet and won't happen now. Exactly what sinister and diabolical plot do you think Obama has plotted??? Ever hear of the "fog of war"??? Kinda like when Dubya told us we'd be greeted as liberators, that Iraq would be a walk in the park.

Apparently you've forgotten about the hundreds and hundreds of troops killed because the Pentagon never bothered to issue them correct flak jackets or up-armoured Humvees and thus they were blown to pieces. With the track record the GOP has had for the last decade you are hardly in a position to be passing judgement.

So you think Watergate was nothing more than a cover up of a break in into a doctor's office, is that it? I suggest you go back and read up on it, it was about vastly more than a break in, rather it was about a sociopathic presidents gross misuse of power and his attempt to infiltrate every level of political power as well as the news media.

As Paul Newman said, making the top of Nixon's list he considered one of his life's greatest accomplishments.

We're giving Afghanistan the best possible hope of a peaceful outcome after decades of war which started with the Soviets in '79 Whackjob's leaders would have us stay there another decade, no questions asked.

Have you ever actually been in a real war zone? Do you even know what the "fog of war" means or what it refers to? When used by Dems it is just a red herring. This is no fog of war mishap, this was blatant lying and politicizing of the deaths of 4 Americans who deserved better. No revisionist history lesson is necessary from you.

It's possible to call it lying, and you do. But you cannot PROVE it's lying.

Kinda like we can't prove Paul Ryan climbed all those mountains when he was running marathons.

@Bucket: The proof that there was no demonstration and that the attack was conducted by a militant group in a coordinated and premeditated manner over a period of several hours, was provided in two separate Congressional hearings by US State Department officials.

The "fog of war" excuse does not fly since the attack was being monitored in "real time". It is evident that the administration was fully aware that the narrative stated by UN Ambassador Susan Rice was not the truth. The responsible statement would have been to state that an attack on the consulate in Benghazi resulted in the death of 4 Americans including the US Ambassador. Our thoughts and prayers of the American people go out to their families during this very difficult time. We are actively investigating the attack, the information that we have is very fluid. As more details are confirmed, we will pass them on to the public.

But, instead, we get the lie that it rose up out of a demonstration similar to the one that occurred in Cairo about a video. Further stating that this was not a coordinated and premeditated attack. It was a known lie on September 12th. It was a known lie on September 16th when Susan Rice said it. The information will eventually leak out.

Perhaps, the militant group was motivated by the video. I don't think anyone can say what was the mindset that led to the attack.

The problem is that Americans are trusting their government less and less. As stories like these happen, the public pays attention since it supports their reasoning to not trust their governement.

ATTACK, Obama never dodged the draft you ignorant dolt. Willlard marched in protest IN SUPPORT OF THE DRAFT AS WELL AS THE WAR smart guy. Then when his turn came he took student and "religious" deferments to weasel out of service and spent 2 years in France while his fellow Americans were getting their asses shot off pal.

And if you can't see the difference between someone like say Bill Clinton who OPPOSED the war and did not want ANYONE to get drafted compared to a world class hypocrite like Mittens who is a tough guy with other people's blood, then you are even more ignorant then I first suspected.

And anytime you'd like to compare notes on members of Congress from both parties who have served with valor and distinction, you just let me know fella. It's astounding how many GOP pols talk tough but never served compared with sane, non war mongering Democrats who have served this nation with distinction.

You think the fact that he destroyed our economy and got us bogged down in two undending wars might have something to do with it?

And as for "criminal" I'd say that what Bush and Cheney did would fit that category, sending kids off to die on some trumped up charges and for what? What have we gotten out of Iraq? At least they were a bulkwark against Iran which is why we supported them back in the 1980's. Now you dummies can't wait to start yet another shooting war.

But we can also thank Bill Clinton for selling us out to China via the Chinese Trade Agreement. I remember him on TV declaring the Chinese Trade Agreement would create millions of jobs for Americans, NOT. We can also thank Clinton for wiping out the Glass Steagall Act, which caused the banks to NOT be regulated because he couldn't understand what derivatives were. We can also thank the Democrats in the last 2 years of Bush presidency for wanting everyone to have the American dream of owning a house even if they couldn't afford it. Hence, the reason banks were loaning with the blessing of the Democratic Congress to put people in homes they couldn't afford. BAM! The housing crash. Read up on the history of Congress.

The plan according to one of the Rockefeller's was to, first get into a war with Afghanistan, next Iraq and third Iran. This plan was put into effect so the rich will control the oil fields. That is why China and Russia are helping Iran. They could care less about Iran. They just got their foot in the door before the U.S. does. This world is run by the central bank. During world war ll, Rockefeller was selling an additive that the Nazi's needed to add to their fuel in order to bomb London. What the rich do is start conflicts. Then they play both sides. This way no matter who loses they win. During Vietnam they had an American ship strafed and blamed it on the Vietcong. This way it got us into the war. This was admitted years later by McNamara who worked for Johnson. After we got into the war, Rockefeller sold parts to Russia who put them together and then shipped them to the North Vietnamese. When the weapons where put into position then the U.S. was allowed to destroy them. In this way more weapons where made in a never ending cycle. And this was done by Rockefeller and Vanderbilt's.

J.P. Morgan created a depression in 1907. He said the banks where not able to keep your money safe. So the people took all the money from the small banks and J.P. Morgan bought all the little banks up and then called in all the money people borrowed and if they could not pay they had to leave their homes, so the big banks could resell them. Thus creating the Federal Reserve which is a private bank run by the rich. They print American dollars and sell them to the U.S. with interest. The more they print and the more the U.S. buys and puts us into a debt that can never be repayed. That is where the Federal Income Tax comes in. It was never ratified and is not a law. What the bankers did was create it so that all the Federal Tax they collect goes to pay off the interest on the money America bought. It can never be repaid because we keep buying the reserves money. This money is backed by nothing except peoples faith. Back in Morgans day they made all people in the U.S. hand in their gold and kept it for themselves. All 20 or 25% of the gold in the world is housed on Wall Street. It can never be audited. And no one is allowed into Fort Knox. At one time they used to have tours. Now they will let no one audit what is there. One more thing. The first world war was between England and Germany. It was about royalty. So to get into this war, the bankers filled the Lusitania with ammunition and passengers. The German's took out an Ad in the New York papers, telling people not to get on that ship because they will blow it out of the water, if it gets near their sub's. Well guess what the German's blew it up and the American's where so mad they wanted to go to war. THis is why it does not matter who in in the white house or leading Russia. The bankers have their finger in the pie. As Mongo said, " Mongo is just a pawn in the game of life". We have been the Mongo's all along. And as you see not all bankers are Jewish. They are anglo american or German.

It is too obvious for you people. We were attacked by them (Iraq and Afghanistan). To secure our supply of oil, not "steal" it, we took them out. We should have just left and not rebuild their miserable countries. There is no Bank conspiracies. The only problem we have is a bloated Federal Government that should look out for America and @!$%# the "New World Order" crap. We still rule the world for Liberty and Freedom if we have the political will to do it. Screw all those inferior cultures. We have been brainwashed. We do not need the rest of the world.

Russia's still helping Iran. But China's recently moved to a somewhat less friendly position toward Iran (and only Iran).. according to some sources, Iran's lunatic rulers have moved to increase contact with Uygur Islamist groups, and that makes China rather less happy with Iran. They just can't help themselves, apparently.

Whatever agreement Iran did sign it would renege on. Whatever agreement Iran did sign it would cheat on. Whatever agreement Iran did sign it would create hidden sites to do the same thing it's doing now. The only way to verify nothing is being done is the removal of the Theocracy, the imposition of Democracy, and the mass killing of the Republican Guard. And a whole lot more. Iran is just stalling for more time to produce it's nukes. Nothing more.

This is insane. This administration is a MESS. What kind of crap mind games are the WH officials playing on the American people. First NY Times reports a "senior administration official" said Iran is planning a meeting and then nbcnews. com reports that the WH deny's such a planned meeting. Our government is so screwed up. Does the left hand know what the right hand is doing? I think NOT.

It's after midnight on the East coast of the good old US of A and it looks like most of the children who have been screaming about going to war, bombing and nuking Iran etc. have finally gone to bed. I hope their mommas tucked them all in nice and cozy. Maybe some day in the future their testosterone will level off and they will begin to understand the grown up world doesn't operate by yelling about how tough they are (or the US should be) or hiding behind fake names on elctronic news commentary saying things so stupid you wonder if they are not all home schooled by neo-nazi skin heads.

I'm old. So no matter what happens, it's unlikely that I'll have to deal with it for very long. But I have children, and grandchildren. They're pretty terrific human beings. I hate what the world is becoming, because they will have to live in it, and it doesn't appear to me that it's going to be a very nice place to live.

There is so much hate out there. And it comes from both sides. There is hate, intolerance, fear, and paranoia to a degree that is hard for me to grasp. Have you all been seeing too many conspiracy movies, been reading too many conspiracy books? You all attribute motives to others that simply aren't borne out by reality.

Obama is not a closet Muslim Communist. Romney is not planning on aquiring the US as a subsidiary of Romney Enterprises. Do both of them have faults and flaws? Of course they do. They're human beings. But you take those human flaws and turn them into demonic possession. Lighten up people.

I think Romney economic philosophy will be very bad for this country. But I think he believes he has something to offer. I prefer the slow, but steady approach to recovery. I think this economy is very fragile and can be tipped over the edge very easily. I don't like the idea of making sudden dramatic changes to an approach that has restabilized the country.

We would all love to see 100% employment with good, well-paying jobs for everyone. At least, I think we would. Sometimes I wonder if even that scenario would satisfy some of you. There is so much glee expressed when unemployment numbers go up. Do any of you care about the people those numbers represent? Or are the numbers just a way for you to score partisan points?

I can remember Eisenhower. He wasn't a charismatic figure. He didn't pander to anyone. He was just a pleasant, low key kind of guy who got the job done. He would be way too liberal for today's right wing, but he was a bright, kind, effective leader. He helped win the war in Europe and he helped pave the road to economic recovery in its aftermath.

Ike was never a partisan political kind of guy. He sat down with both sides and asked, "What can we do that will work?" He wanted to put all those returning GIs back to work. He was a general who cared about his troops before he was a President. He jacked up taxes to the highest level they have ever been, before or since. The top rate was over 90%. He told the rich that if they wanted to get a tax deduction then they needed to invest in this country. They needed to build factories, businesses and infrastructure. And they did. People went to work. People earned good salaries, bought homes, invested, built, and grew. The rich got richer. The middle class grew bigger and got richer. Even the poor did better.

We did all this without hating each other. Can't we stop with the ugly words and the name calling? Can't we treat each other with respect? Can't we accept that it is possible to see things differently without being bad people? What is the matter with us?

Not saying it's the way for everyone, but it helped me to get away from all of the screaming, name calling and bluster from both sides. I just finally concluded that no matter who you were watching, or what they were saying, they were just doing it to make money. Making a living off of pissing me off. Didn't like it so I quit.

Events which are taking place in Israel's neighborhood are more troublesome for the world at this moment. Events have nothing to do with Israel. Israel is safe. All nations should keep a door open for negotiations even with the enemies. America and Israel should talk to the Iranian Government. Sweet talks can make an enemy bend. Iran will be the bigger loser if war in Syria continues. It will lose an ally. But we don't want fundamental Muslims gaining in Syria and Lebanon. That will be greater threat to our interest in the Middle-East. If, we can calm Iran with our promise of security, Iran might abandon its nuclear program and could work with West and Israel for greater security in Syria and other Arab countries. A friendly Iran will pose no threat to west and Israel. We should never let the fundamental Sunnis gain power in the Arab countries. Lets try this approach and see how things might turn. Friendly Iran could become an asset for the West and Israel against the rising threat of Sunni Muslims. We can always destroy Iran, if Iran becomes threat to the West and Israel in future through sanctions. A peace gesture to Iran might make its government change its policies. Let us try this approach and see how events would turn. Miracles can happen in Geo-Politics, so, lets give miracle a chance.

I just want to gain some time for Israel. A calm Iran and a calm Syria will give us time to break Egypt. We have to create a new Christian nation bordering Israel and Egypt as soon as possible. A new christian nation will be a security for Israel. Muslim fundamental Egypt will be further from Israel. Israel will be secured forever from Egypt. We can take care of Syria and Iran if they ever become a threat to Israel. Shia Iran won't mind breaking Sunni Egypt. It even might help Israel and the West do the job. Giving Iran concessions is like a bait, which might help us in creating a new Christian nation, which I think is more important to Israel and the West.

I feel sorry for this country. It has been turned into a place of hatred and intolerance and ugliness. It is not the America that our forefathers envisioned. It is a sad place, full of fear and hate. You should all be ashamed for turning this great country into little more than a pathetic imitation of the Middle East.
