Crowds surround government office in Beirut as funeral protest turns violent

Protesters rushed the prime minister's office Sunday in Lebanon, ripping up barbed wire and hurling rocks. The situation, which started as a peaceful protest, has become a standoff between protesters and the military. It has also triggered concern that Syria's civil war is spreading. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

Violence erupted in downtown Beirut on Sunday as protesters tried to storm the offices of Prime Minister Najib Mikati after the funeral of an assassinated intelligence chief whose death they blame on Syria.

Security forces shot into the air and police fired tear gas to repulse the hundreds of protesters who overturned barriers and threw stones and steel rods, witnesses said.

Stephanie Gosk, NBC News correspondent in Beirut, reported that the protest had been peaceful but took a turn towards violence, with tear gas visible near Mikati’s offices.

The clashes fed into a growing political crisis in Lebanon linked to the civil war in neighboring Syria.

An angry crowd had marched on the prime minister's office after politicians at the funeral of Brigadier General Wissam al-Hassan, who was killed by a car bomb on Friday, called on Mikati to resign over the killing.

The opposition and its supporters believe Mikati is too close to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his Lebanese ally Hezbollah, which is part of Mikati's government.

Many of the protesters waved flags from the anti-Syrian opposition Future Movement - a mainly Sunni Muslim party - and Christian Lebanese Forces as well as black Islamist flags.

They scattered after the security forces' action and there were no immediate reports of any casualties other than two people fainting.

Opposition leader Saad al-Hariri urged supporters to refrain from any more violence.

"We want peace, the government should fall but we want that in a peaceful way. I call on all those who are in the streets to pull back," Hariri told supporters after the attack, speaking on Future Television channel.

Hassan, 47, was a Sunni Muslim and senior intelligence official who had helped uncover a bomb plot that led to the arrest and indictment in August of a pro-Damascus former Lebanese minister.

He also led an investigation that implicated Syria and the Shi'ite Hezbollah in the assassination of Lebanon's former prime minister Rafik al-Hariri in 2005.

Thousands of people had filled central Martyrs' Square for his funeral ceremony, accusing Syria of involvement in the killing and calling for Mikati to quit.

One banner read "Go, go Najib" echoing the slogans of the Arab Spring.

The violence broke out after Fouad al-Siniora, a former prime minister, said in a speech that the opposition rejected any dialogue to overcome the political crisis caused by the assassination unless the government first resigned.

"No talks before the government leaves, no dialogue over the blood of our martyrs," Siniora said to roars of approval from the crowd.

Journalist Antoun Issa, posting on Twitter, said army members were also caught by the tear gas.

At the start of the funeral, senior politicians and the military and security top brass turned out at the Internal Security Force headquarters for a ceremony held with full military honors and broadcast live on national television.

Hassan's wife and two sons, the youngest weeping, listened as he was eulogized by the head of police, Ashraf Rifi, and President Michel Suleiman.

Suleiman said the government and people must work "shoulder to shoulder" to overcome the challenges posed by the killing.

"I tell the judiciary do not hesitate, the people are with you, and I tell the security be firm, the people are with you, with you. And I tell the politicians and the government do not provide cover to the perpetrator."

In keeping with custom for state funerals, church bells pealed as police officers carried the flag-draped coffins of Hassan and his bodyguard to the mosque on Martyr's Square through chanting crowds. Moslem prayers were broadcast by loudspeaker from the mosque.

In the build-up the funeral, people at the square had said they saw Syria's hand in the bombing.

“We blame Bashar al-Assad, the president of Syria," said Assmaa Diab, 14, from the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, Hassan's home town. She was in the square with her sister and father.

"He is responsible for everything - in the past, now, and if we don't stand up to him, the future," she said.

The prime minister was also a focus of their anger.

"We are here to tell Mikati we don't need him anymore and to tell Hezbollah we don't want any more of their games," said Hamza Akhrass, a 22-year-old student who from south Lebanon.

"Mikati takes too much pressure for Syria."

One banner read: "People want the overthrow of Najib".

Mikati said on Saturday he had offered to resign to make way for a government of national unity but he had accepted a request by President Michel Suleiman to stay in office to allow time for talks on a way out of the political crisis.

Sunday's events highlighted how the 19-month-old uprising against Assad in Syria has exacerbated deep-seated sectarian tensions in Lebanon, which is still scarred from its 1975-90 civil war.

Sunni-led rebels are fighting to overthrow Assad, who is from the Alawite minority, which has its roots in Shi'ite Islam. Lebanon's religious communities are divided between those that support Assad and those that back the rebels.

Mikati sought in vain to insulate the country from turmoil in its larger neighbor, which has long played a role in Lebanese politics. He himself said he suspected Hassan's assassination was linked to his role in uncovering Syrian involvement in the August bomb plot.

I think most of us who have been following the Syrian Civial War over the past year and a half expect that this conflagration will one day spread to Lebanon. It seems the day is approaching more rapidly than ever.

Let me be pre-emptive here; should this erupt into war in Lebanon, it will not be President Obama's fault. Wow, I'm sure that statement will get things going. Why do I say that? Simple, look into Lebanese history and Syria's involvement in that country and one can see it all began while President Obama was far too young to even run for the office. No, if it spreads, then the onus will belong to Syria, Assad and his late father.

Lebanon burned in the 60s, was rebuilt. It burned in the 80s, built again. Guess they are overdue. I've known a number of (non-muslim) Lebanese, who emigrated the US, nice people.
I do feel for Turkey, if they get drawn into this mess and lose their non-sectarian government, it will be a sad day.

My word am I tired of hearing the latte-drinkers informing us about how they've X amount of people from country so-and-so and that they were all "very nice people"...

...as if the open combat being waged in the Middle East for the least 30 years is just some stereotype that Westerners need to unlearn. Especially in Lebanon which makes even Iraq look like it has a fighting chance.

Look, all these places - Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Egypt...these societies have very serious problems. I don't care who you met in the hotel lobby, coffee shop, or gift shop in whatever country you were in - I don't care what the tour guide told you - these are counties where people are routinely pulled out of their vehicles and executed ON THE SPOT based on what their ID Card says.

Grow up already. Every adult knows that perfectly nice people are capable of savagery.

A powerful bomb devastated a Christian neighborhood of this capital city of Lebanon on Friday, killing an intelligence official long viewed as an enemy by neighboring Syria and unnerving a nation as Syria’s sectarian-fueled civil war spills beyond its borders and threatens to engulf the region.

    What, no condemnation from Barry?

Can we just skip the debate on foreign affairs and have Barry read his concession speech from the teleprompter?

@Travis "these are counties where people are routinely pulled out of their vehicles and executed ON THE SPOT based on what their ID Card says."

Really now, pretty sure this still happens IN THIS COUNTRY you f***ing moron. You just never go into those areas because you know better. What tourist knows to stay out of the hoods? Does not have to be a black hood either. There are people of all colors that will do it, forget religion or nationality. It is a human thing. they see an opportunity and they take. I thought that you wanted people to take advantage of any opportunities that come their way. Who cares if they bend some rules to do it since I thought it "took intelligence" to get away without being caught right?

30 years is all it takes for you huh? I guess you believe the stereotype that this country is "socialist" now when people only pay a 14% effective tax rate compared to this country's golden years which were all during a time when the top tax rates were between 70%-90%. That was only in 1982, yet how many people cry about this country being "socialist" now? How many wars and how many years has this country been at war since WW2? You want to talk about savagery? What did we do to American Indians you know those stereotypical savages?

I guess you forget WHY we went to those countries in the first place. Why did we even get involved over 30 years ago? There is this thing called cheap oil and WE DID ANYTHING, AND SUPPORTED ANYONE TO GET. All so we could beat those commies from Russia. Some of the things we did all in the name of cheap oil went against the values we openly preach about like democracy. Throw in Israel too and maybe that has something to do with it. They also have problems just like any other nation. How is this nation doing atm btw? You might want to be careful about tossing stones.

I went to high school grew up with a Muslim from Jordan. His father was from Greece and his mother was from Palestinian. I slept over at his house, ate, worked at his father's stores, even tried to f*** his sister like some of my other friends. He was protective of his sister, but did not flip out, go nuts over, freak out etc. I never did get to do anything with his sister, but she did marry a white dude from Texas. the family was not happy at first, but they were alright with it after the shock went away. Over the many years that I knew him and his family I meet other Muslims. Most were nice just like most people are, but there were a couple crazy ones just like there are with any race. People are people. My mother remarried an Arabic man from a Christian/Orthodox family, I know that whole family too, and most are good humans. NEWSFLASH over 90% of humans WANT THE SAME EXACT THINGS IN LIFE they just go about them in different ways sometimes.

Grow up already and understand that humans are humans no matter the color, race, sex, religion, nationality, etc. You will find good and bad examples of each. It is called probability something you obviously have no clue about. If it is possible to have a "good" person then it HAS to be possible to have a "bad" person. Good and bad are all in the eye of the beholder too.

Simple people need things in black and white or it confuses them. Since their simple brains cannot see shades of gray. Enemy bad, friend good, kill enemy... Ever stop to think that all this hate, racism, people fighting over religion, etc. IS DUE TO UNREGULATED COMPETITION. Take away the life and death competition and people would not be at each others' throats. Capitalism breeds it, but people are to stupid to think for themselves. Capitalism good, Socialism bad... If capitalism only allows 0.1% of the population to win or make 1000 times more then others how does it provide better opportunities then socialism? IT DOES NOT. Christian good, Muslim bad...

Not everything in this world, not every conflict has to do with America's elections, or the partisan vitrol which has hit a fevered pitch here in the US. The world was turning a long, long time before the colonists even came to the North American continent. And peoples do have their own histories that have gone a long time back; not that lands ruled by utter dictators who run the equivallent of a prison colony in their countries helps much. That's also right up there with many who think all the ills of the world are a product of "the younger generation" and how they're all sending the world to hell in a hand basket, while quickly forgetting much of the less then good things they seem to selectively remember in a sense of nostalgia, which had transpired even in their own recent past, let along the distant past. Sometimes, just sometimes it amounts to seeing things through rose colored glasses, that can distort the view one might hold...

Truth be told, no one country, no one continent, no one group of people has a monopoly on dispicable animals who do terrible things either. We've had our share of Jeffery Dahmers, "the son of Sam", and other such killers who really are no better then many we could point fingers at "over there". Human evil if you will, is not soley present in "one people" and absent from all others. And whereas many could, and rightly should, have had something to say about the concentration camps in Germany around the time of Hitler, the sad truth is that we had our Eugenics programs going on around the same time. For those who weren't aware of what that is, you might be shocked... As I said, human evil if you will, knows no borders, and isn't something that exclusively exists in 1 part of the globe only...

Assad is one of the best ME leaders. Hezbollah should take Labanese Christians on their side and battle seventh century barbaric and beastly one-way traffic Sunnis.

If atrocities and barbarism on girls, children and women are the criteria, then the most despotic, autocratic and bigoted Sunni Saudi ruler with his 5000 princes and princesses, Kuwaiti, UAE and other Arab League Sunni rulers and their rich sheiks are the biggest culprits in the history.

In Bahrain, Sunni Saudis and their seventh century Sunni Arab League Sunni killer rulers sent their forces and killed peaceful Shiites protestors.

In Bahrain, Shiites majority are supposed to tolerate a corrupt and despotic Sunni ruler. For these one-way traffic Sunni religious Nazis, a better Shiites ruler like Assad is not acceptable.

So this means Shiites should ask for their Shiastans wherever they form more than 10 percent.

Shiites of Bahrain should overthrow their autocratic, corrupt and despotic Sunni ruler. Let the liberation struggle start from Bahrain.

They should expand their liberation struggles from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan (18 percent), Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, UAE and other places which have Sunni rulers.

What a bunch of cowards Shiites are? They talk big, act big and show their bravery before unarmed minorities like Jews, women and others. Then they add their dances when they stone them.

Shiites of Iraq should side with Kurds and should stop oil supplies to Turkey for supporting the Sunni Islamic extremists like al-Qaida, MB in Syria.

As they have been taking blows and killings by Sunnis, these Sunnis are able to act as they like to Shiites.

Shiites of Iran should side with Assad and see that all the Sunni rebels are eliminated.

What are the brave Hezbollah doing?

They should do suicide bombings in Mecca and Medina. Or else Shiites genocides just like the genocides of non-Muslims by the Sunni Islamic religious Nazis will continue.

I, another infidel like Shiites, support the Shiites under dogs.

And let me add to that - NOW the US media wants the Americans to back the Sunni AL Qaeda terrorists thugs in this Syrian civil war. You lost me at Assad as being one of the best Middle East dictators, erm I mean leaders is the word that was used. If this wasn't all tongue in cheek, I mean really I'd rather throw the distinction for better leadership in the direction of Turkey tbh.

Sometimes, just sometimes, we as a species seems very young, with much to learn... We live in a universe of possibilities, and much opportunity, and instead sit around like this, and then get the cheer leading of 'good little dictator, but he's our dictator" and whatever else. I really wish I could live to see the day we'd grow out of some of this, and actually live to see us create something better for ourselves and our posterity... Instead it more of the tired old same... /sigh

The desire of the Muslims to commit Jewish genocide has existed since the days of Allah and did not start with the onset of the Arab-Israeli conflict. With regards to imposing Sharia law, they make no distinction between lands originally Muslim and lands that they conquered by force. They are also not in favor of “peaceful solutions,” and prefer to kill or be killed. They believe that the Jews started the French Revolution and the first and second world wars and their views on Jews and financial institutions are comparable to the Nazis. They claim freedom of all religions under Islam though go on to say that “Israel, Judaism and Jews challenge Islam and the Moslem people” and that “Peace and quiet would not be possible except under the wing of Islam.”

                  The Covenant
                  of the
                  Islamic Resistance Movement

                  18 August 1988

                  Article Six:

The Islamic Resistance Movement is a distinguished Palestinian movement, whose allegiance is to Allah, and whose way of life is Islam. It strives to raise the banner of Allah over every inch of Palestine, for under the wing of Islam followers of all religions can coexist in security and safety where their lives, possessions and rights are concerned. In the absence of Islam, strife will be rife, oppression spreads, evil prevails and schisms and wars will break out.

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, has said:

"The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, (evidently a certain kind of tree) would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews." (related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).

                  Article Eleven:

The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered: it, or any part of it, should not be given up. Neither a single Arab country nor all Arab countries, neither any king or president, nor all the kings and presidents, neither any organization nor all of them, be they Palestinian or Arab, possess the right to do that. Palestine is an Islamic Waqf land consecrated for Moslem generations until Judgement Day. This being so, who could claim to have the right to represent Moslem generations till Judgement Day?

This is the law governing the land of Palestine in the Islamic Sharia (law) and the same goes for any land the Moslems have conquered by force, because during the times of (Islamic) conquests, the Moslems consecrated these lands to Moslem generations till the Day of Judgement.

                  Article Thirteen:

Initiatives, and so-called peaceful solutions and international conferences, are in contradiction to the principles of the Islamic Resistance Movement. Abusing any part of Palestine is abuse directed against part of religion. Nationalism of the Islamic Resistance Movement is part of its religion. Its members have been fed on that. For the sake of hoisting the banner of Allah over their homeland they fight. "Allah will be prominent, but most people do not know."

                  Article Fifteen:

"I swear by the holder of Mohammed's soul that I would like to invade and be killed for the sake of Allah, then invade and be killed, and then invade again and be killed." (As related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).

                  Article Twenty-Two:

For a long time, the enemies have been planning, skillfully and with precision, for the achievement of what they have attained. They took into consideration the causes affecting the current of events. They strived to amass great and substantive material wealth which they devoted to the realisation of their dream. With their money, they took control of the world media, news agencies, the press, publishing houses, broadcasting stations, and others. With their money they stirred revolutions in various parts of the world with the purpose of achieving their interests and reaping the fruit therein. They were behind the French Revolution, the Communist revolution and most of the revolutions we heard and hear about, here and there. With their money they formed secret societies, such as Freemasons, Rotary Clubs, the Lions and others in different parts of the world for the purpose of sabotaging societies and achieving Zionist interests. With their money they were able to control imperialistic countries and instigate them to colonize many countries in order to enable them to exploit their resources and spread corruption there.

You may speak as much as you want about regional and world wars. They were behind World War I, when they were able to destroy the Islamic Caliphate, making financial gains and controlling resources. They obtained the Balfour Declaration, formed the League of Nations through which they could rule the world. They were behind World War II, through which they made huge financial gains by trading in armaments, and paved the way for the establishment of their state. It was they who instigated the replacement of the League of Nations with the United Nations and the Security Council to enable them to rule the world through them. There is no war going on anywhere, without having their finger in it.

                  Article Twenty-Eight:

Israel, Judaism and Jews challenge Islam and the Moslem people. "May the cowards never sleep."

                  Article Thirty-One:

The Islamic Resistance Movement is a humanistic movement. It takes care of human rights and is guided by Islamic tolerance when dealing with the followers of other religions. It does not antagonize anyone of them except if it is antagonized by it or stands in its way to hamper its moves and waste its efforts.

Under the wing of Islam, it is possible for the followers of the three religions - Islam, Christianity and Judaism - to coexist in peace and quiet with each other. Peace and quiet would not be possible except under the wing of Islam. Past and present history are the best witness to that."

Sounds to me like Allah and Jesus should have had a winner take match years ago.

Back in the days of Constantanople the Christians said they would the Muslims off the face of the Earth also. Looks like they failed.

The componants from the bomb were identified from a local military complex in beirut.

The bomb was not of Syrian origin, but Lebonese origin. And it looks like a member of their own military did it.

That is not really a resounding body of proof. If the bombing plot really was of Syrian origin, I think they would be smart enough not to use materials labeled "made in Syria" - just sayin.

Middle East exploding? Iran, Hezbollah, and Assad attempting to deflect attention from Revolution in Syria? Bad situation, entire region could be drawn into the conflict and then we get suckered in. Very bad vibes, know many Lebanese Christians, really hard working and nice people, well maybe exempting Sunuunu (sp.?) he reminds me of an old angry olive. No this is not the Presidents fault.

It really makes no difference who wins over there, the killing will keep going on till they realize their prophet was just a prophet and nothing more. We have had many prophets. STOP IT you fools.

Lebanon, another country chained by Iran to its terrorist strategy, has been moving towards this point since the revolution in Syria began. Iran's 'volunteers' throughout the middle east need to go. Turkey, Jordan and Saudi Arabia need to clean up this Iranian mess before Iran has nuclear weapons ... their red line is closer than Israel's.

The only thing that would sort of make sense is bombings like in Lybia with no involvement on the ground, but the outcome of that would be totally impossible to determine. You Neo Cons don't have a fracking clue about anything. The US is in a debt hole because of your two fracking wars so shut up!

There was a reason why pre Arab spring rulers ruled with a heavy hand, there were reasons why US foreign policy stayed out of their affairs, there were reasons why some of these groups were kept in check, can anyone guess why, Obama and his foreign policy is to blame for letting the cat out of the bag, Arab spring was good intentions but bad policy and Obama had to know that, I knew it so if I could figure it out then Obama and his team of genius's knew it, that or we inherited the stupidest team in history to run the country either way the ME and North Africa is in worse shape today then it was a couple of years ago and I don't think anyone can save it now, Americas foreign policy backfired and put our enemies in a position to do some real damage to the region and the rest of the world. instead of having dictators for rulers they have extremist, what a nice change.

Beth you are absolutely RIGHT. They're all BS from magic underwear to angels and virgins in the clouds. They all preach something they can't even apply.

For example Boo Boo here is probably a Christian. Christianity is based on forgiveness, it teaches you tolerance and it tells you not to judge... YET you say ALLAH kills. If you don't see anything contradictory with what you wrote and your believes, that only affirm what I already know, religious freaks are ignorant.

BTW Allah means GOD, and for Christians there's only one. So technically you just called your God a Killer. Islam has prophet Mohammed, that's the guy you have to judge.

It's time to wake up and look at the world as is and stop creating alternative realities because you're missing the REAL thing. It's time to STOP jerking around and start using something called common sense.

So now go outside look at the night sky for few hours and then think really hard… And ask yourself again if God exists, if the answer is still yes, slap yourself in the face and go to sleep.

I so enjoy reading everyone's comments--guess that's the beauty of hiding behind the web. For the most part there seem to be some interesting if not delusional points of view; I hardly believe that any of these people are going to change their minds, beliefs, etc. Too bad we don't hear from the folks on the front-lines in this fiasco. Of course Syria has its dirty Lucifer hand in all the terror that happens in Lebanon. I lived it and know it from personal experience. Too many lives have been lost and nothing has changed in centuries! Fighting out of fear and ignorance.

Now tiny little Lebanon gets to take on a completely unnecessary social and economical burden by housing and caring for Syrian refugees that once massacred and did unspeakable acts to their Lebanese neighbors, while the Syrian filthy scum dogs kill anyone that is thought to be against the tyrant Assad dictatorship...ummm regime.

There has never been Peace in that region since Christ walked on its sacred land--such a shame, the land with such rich history, where it all began will forever struggle to survive and flourish.

God help them all--especially my fellow Christians.

*please do not feel the need to reply with toxic propaganda, I neither care nor have any interest in anyone's reply, I simply wanted to voice my thoughts like everyone else.
