Jordan foils plot to bomb Western targets, arrests 11

Petra via Reuters

Jordan detained 11 men suspected of planning attacks against shopping centers and other diplomatic targets. The men have been 'going in and out' of Syria, and are also believed involved in the rebel effort to overthrow Assad.

Jordan has foiled a plot by an al-Qaida-linked cell to bomb its shopping centers and assassinate Western diplomats, state television said on Sunday, thwarting an attempt to destabilize the key U.S. ally.

Security forces had detained 11 suspects, all Jordanians, in connection with the plot, which envisaged carrying out attacks in the capital Amman using smuggled weapons and explosives from Syria, according to security officials cited by television.

The plot had been active since June.

Minister of Information Samih al Maaytah said the arrests underscored the serious threat posed by radical "terror groups" seeking to undermine the kingdom's long tradition of stability.

A key U.S. ally in the Middle East and Israel's peace partner, Jordan enjoys close ties with Western intelligence agencies and has often been targeted by al-Qaida and other Islamist militants.

The cell had targeted two major shopping malls in the capital and was planning a bombing campaign in the capital's affluent Abdoun neighborhood, where many foreign embassies are located.

The U.S. and British embassies were among the targets, reported the Jordan Times, quoting a security source.

A security source said the suspects had manufactured explosives "aimed at inflicting the heaviest losses possible".

"The group was able to devise new types of explosives to be used for the first time and planned to add TNT to increase their destructive impact," said the source.

Links to Syria
The same security source said there was a crucial link with Syria where President Bashar al-Assad is battling to put down an uprising against his family's rule.

"Their plans included getting explosives and mortars from Syria," the security source told Reuters, saying the militants had sought to strike at a time of regional upheaval when the country's security establishment is over stretched.

The authorities said they had seized large quantities of ammunition, machine guns and other items such as computers. The militants were training to use "suicide bombers using explosive belts and booby-trapped cars", said another security source.

The case was referred to the state security court's prosecutor who began questioning "11 Jordanian nationals from Salafist movements," a judicial source told the AFP.

Maaytah told reporters that members of the militant group had spent some time in Syria, without saying when they had returned to Jordan.

"This group arrived from Syria. They have been going in and out," said Maaytah, explaining that the case had been transferred to the state security prosecutor.

Another security source said the cell had been fighting for "some period" alongside Islamist rebel groups in Syria.

Jordan has in recent months arrested scores of hard-line Islamist fundamentalists along its northern border with Syria as they were about to cross into the country to join jihadist groups fighting to overthrow Assad.

Hundreds gathered in Bali, Indonesia, in remembrance of those lost 10 years ago when suicide bombers linked to al-Qaida orchestrated Asia's deadliest terror strike by bombing two nightclubs. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

If Jordan allows Assad's opponents to aid the armed uprising, Amman's security forces fear the Syrian government could retaliate by sending agents to carry out bomb attacks inside the country.

Intercepted electronic mail showed that the cell had received advice from explosives experts affiliated with al-Qaida in Iraq.

Jordan regularly arrests Islamist suspects and puts them on trial in military courts that human rights groups say are illegal and lack proper legal safeguards. Many civic groups also say many of the Islamist cases are politically motivated.

In 2005, al Qaida claimed responsibility for three suicide bombings that ripped through luxury hotels in Jordan's capital killing dozens of people.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Would that include the use of armed drones to kill US Citizens, without any judicial authorization???

It's a good thing they caught these guys. Bombing embassies is one thing, but targeting malls and shopping centers is beyond barbaric.

If the jihadists are ever defeated it will be by their own people not ousiders. We can assist but clearer heads in islamist countries must step up see the threat and react in kind to these lunatics who want to enslave their own people to their way of thinking.

It is good to see Jordan taking action to prevent these attacks. It is also great to see them taking action to keep Islamist fanatics from using their country as a base of operation for attacks into Syria or as a gateway through which to enter the fight in Syria. They do not want their own citizens crossing over and supporting the "rebels" in Syria or supplying them with aid because they do not want the Syrian government to retaliate against them. It is too bad that Turkey does not take this same action and keep the Islamist fanatic "rebels" from using Turkey as a base of operation. Everything possible should be done to seal all borders with Syria to put a stop to the flow of weapons and foreign fighters into the country. What is going on in Syria is an internal matter and it should be left to the Syrians to resolve it for themselves without outside interference.

If those drones are "unplugged" then who is going to do the work (drones don't only kill but conduct surveillance too)? You?

Drones are not a perfect solution but nothing is a "perfect" solution in war. Otherwise perfect would be never having to go to war.

Hating the Obama administration for using drones is just stupid. The whole purpose of using drones and other unmanned vehicles is to carry out operations that we would be doing anyways just without the risk of losing any pilots in dangerous areas.

Would you rather the Republican party to have full control again? They are the party that loves to go to war. Obama is doing what he can to prevent us from going to war with Iran where as Romney would expidite the war process.

    Zim123,

Using drones saves lives and is authorized in declaired Combat areas, by the US Military...

Using drones by the CIA for assassinations, without any ACCOUNTABILITY is the problem...

"They are the party that loves to go to war."

Lets compare the actions of the last 8+POTUS...

    DEMOCRAT POTUS -

Truman - dropped two atomic bombs while his Generals were stating that there was NO Military JUSTIFICATION...

LBJ - Lied about the Tonkin Gulf incident to ESCALATE the Vietnam operation...

Carter - Used the CIA/ISI to arm, fund, and train the radical Muslims in Afghanistan to trigger the USSR/Afghanistan War...

Clinton - A. Used these same radical Muslims during the Bosnia Conflict, to kill Christians...

    B. Called for regeim change and bombed Baghdad 4+days in 1998...

Obama - Took-over the UN 'Nation Building' in Afghanistan, killing almost 1,500+US Troops and spending 2+Trillion+USD...

    REPUBLICAN POTUS -

Nixon - Pulled the US Troops out of Vietnam...

Bush,Sr - With the support of the UN & 50+Countries, pushed Iraq out of Kuwait, stopping @ the Iraq border...

George Bush - A. With the support of the UN & 50+Countries invaded Afghanistan after 9-11. Turning the Nation Building over to the UN & 52+countries, Dec 2001...

    B. Invaded Iraq after Saddam; invaded Iran & gased his own people (Kurds), tried to assassinate a former POTUS, and was paying successful terrorist bombers families - 10 to 25+thousand+USD...

Now which party is promoting WARS & Terrorism???

""11 Jordanian nationals from Salafist movements,""

They wanted to attack western targets. Now it is Jordan.

We had worse experiences in Libya, 9/11, Somalia and other places.

Assad is one of the best ME Muslim rulers.

Sunni Syrian rebels are supported by Sunni Islamic religious Nazis like Salaffi, al Qaida, MB and others Sunni killer groups.

Followers of Islamic cult, especially Sunni Saudi inspired Islamic radicals and militants (al-Qaida, Salaffi, Wahhabi, MB, Taliban and other label ones), are fast marching backwards to their seventh century desert tribal days.

They are indulging in rapings, lootings, killings and genocides of non-Muslims (Darfur, S. Sudan, Nigeria and spreading like wild fire in many regions and Muslims (Libya, Yemen, Mali, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan and other places).

Sunni Saudi backed Salaffi and MB new chapters are opening up in Egypt. Just watch the fate of Christians, women and Israel as the time goes by.

Even in Syria, if Assad is overthrown by Sunni Islamic religious Nazis like al-Qaida, MB, the conditions of Christians will be unbearable just like Iraq.

Pakis and Sunni Saudis and co are responsible for 80 percent of world problems including economic ones.

Examine the devastations with Iraqi wars and now sanctions on Iranian oil and the resultant oil price manipulations.

Iraqi wars gave PIIGS and US huge unemployment, cut in domestic spending, huge debts and more economic mess.

Oil price, which was $40 in 2009 has crossed $110 now with sanctions on Iranian oil giving more economic problems all over the world.

Remove the sanctions on Iran oil to weaken our No. 1 enemy: Sunni Saudis and their Sunni Islamic hate and terror groups.

They are making the lives of their own people also miserable by their Islamic religious madness to the intolerable levels.

Now if I may I would like to add to your comment:

Notice how the media is working overtime to get us Americans to back the Sunni terrorist thugs in Syria's civil war? FULLY armed by the princes in the Saudi palace? You know - so they can finished off their objective: to kill all the Shiites, Christians, non-believers and Alawites? You know, the ones who are NOW killing babies, women and the elderly over there??? (A.K.A CIVILIANS???)
Why the hell would we want to get involved in THAT fiasco?

The Zionist-controlled media must think Americans are pretty stupid. But then again, they may be right...

At least these days, we are able to oppose the Sunni Saudis, oil companies, extremist Jews like Netanyahus, Christian right and their lobbyists mechanizations to outsource their dirty jobs to US, British and European nations as during Iraqi wars.

If we had opposed Iraqi wars, then everyone would have pounced on us and media would have banned us.

All anyone has to do is take a good long look at the men Jordan is holding as possible suspects. Is it coincidence that they are basically the same ages as the idiots who were talked into pulling off 9/11?

The conversionists are out there like roaches these days. When they aren't trying to convert us to a backward religion here in the US and the Middle East, they are desperately trying to convert the government into a Corporate America USA or worse, ramming a hideously flawed right wing ideology down our throats.

Let me be the first to say it if no one else will: Don't tell intelligent, educated adults what to do. If you love your religion, so be it. If you love your anarchy, so be it. If you love your flawed right wing ideology so be it. Just keep it the hell away from anyone who wants no part of it. Those old eunoch imams can't keep that autonomous control over their countries without brainwashing these younger men into believing their BS. This isn't really about religion. It's about an ancient old man's idea of power and control. And, all they have to do is open their mouths, pretend ancient ancestral wisdom and these younger men fall for it, hook, line and sinker.

Not a single one of the coward imams hiding in mosques in the Middle East give a fat rat's patoot how many young men they convince suicide is part of some holy act. They convince these young men that if they make the ultimate sacrifice for their religion, some fantasy wondrous reward lies ahead. If bones and flesh rotting in a grave is a reward, these imams are fooling themselves and these young men.

If we want to support middle east democracy then we have to face the facts that in the middle east that the majority population in those countries dislike the USA and Israel. We have tied ourselves so tightly to Israel that we are seen as one in those countries.

          #5.3 - Mon Oct 22, 2012 7:22 AM EDT

No matter how much they feast at the table of denial, the ancient imams will die off and these young men will by then have figured out that trying to convert the world backward isn't remotely possible. When it comes down to it, it's US corporations operating in the Middle East in shakedown fashion (as always) that is these religious fanatics biggest bitch. Yet, if the US withdraw all financial support, that would also fan the flames of more terrorist plots.

It's as if these young Middle Easterns rely so heavily on the US, they are like cocaine addicts who now realize it was always up to them to build their countries into more financially stable and functioning nations. The US is damned if we do and damned if we don't when it comes to the Middle East.

The reality is that Middle Eastern problems belong to Middle Easterners and not the US. It has to start with them. If we slam the door shut for a few years until they have to work their asses off to rebuild their countries, they won't have the time to go around blowing people and buildings and government up. Idle time has always been the devil's workshop.

But I'm sure you and your kind think the world would be a much better place with Saddam ALIVE and still paying successful terrorist bombers families 10 to 25+thousand+USD. Remember the USS Cole, Kobal Towers, the African Embassies, etc, where hundreds of US Citizens died???

The Civilian companies, working as US Forces support functions, instead of the US Troops. Was due to the 1/3 US Force reductions that Clinton signed into effect. Plus the 'Defense Realignment' (BRAC) that Bush Sr started and Clinton completed...

You Democrats must be so proud of LBJ, Carter, Clinton, Obama, etc that supported the radical Muslims, and lied to the US Public while justifying the escalations and thousands of US Troop deaths...

You bois can't seriously think any sane American wants a return to Bush policies of 8 years do you? And that is all the Repubbos are after...a perpetual Gravy Train ride only they get to enjoy.

Sorry...the Gravy Train left the depot without you. When you call a president a liar, you'd better be able to prove it in a court of law.

Risk1...What a hypocrite! Bush killed 4,000 plus Americans in Iraq alone and tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi citizens. Did you criticize Bush for that? Or was that something you righties like to shove under a rug? Nearly 10,000 American military came back from Iraqi maimed and in serious need of medical help, all of which the Ahole Republican House refused to fund claiming it would raise the deficit.

BS...The only deficit they were ever concerned about was Main Street Americans deficit that pays the taxes the 1% don't and tax subsidies in the billions to corporations earning one profit after another.

I sometimes am floored by all. square dude... Egypt is now run by radical islamist who are trying to implement Sharia Law. They are pressing for us to release the Blind Sheik. Attacking our embassy in Egypt they wer holding signs saying death to America .. we are all Osama Bin Laden.. you call this a sucess ? Mitt Romney also stated we need to help the rebels in Syria.. read the article above.. the rebels & AlQaeida were giving these guys the weapons and explosives to blow up our Embassies... these rebels are NOT our allies. Libya will also turn against us.. just wait. It's time we all understand that almost all these countries do not like us. We keep putting our nose in other peoples business. There is a reason that China and Russia may assist in supplies to their allies but they also have learned that these countries need to fight it out themselves. It is not that I agree with Assad's tactics... the problem is that the other side is not our ally either. We give Saudi Arabia weapons to supply to the rebels and they along with Al Qaeida give them to assasins in Jordan to blow up our Embassies. Obama has turned over countries to enemies that do hate us and Romney ... your proposing doing the same thing.

Daddy there is no doubt that democracy in the middle east isnt working out for us, the crazys are winning because of overpopulation = no jobs, lack of education and decades of dictatorships supported by us. Also being so tightly tied to the ever popular Israel doesnt do us a lot of good either.

square dude .. Israel is a tough decision.. they have fought to protect their land. At the same time the disagreements between them and Palestine is a tough one. I ask you .. If American Indians show up next to your home insisting your house is on property that their forefathers onced occupied and they are going to annililate you... are you going to give it up and walk away ? I can't even imagine having my family in Israel with Iran stating they are going to get rid of us once and for all. I am not Jewish but many are still alive or at least a few are that remember what Hitler did to them. It is hard to remember we let Hitler go way to long before we stepped in. I hate to say it but war is always going to be what has to happen because there will always be someone who wants to " be in charge of more ". I have witnessed Dearborn Michigan personally with the Muslim religion and if most could see this I would think they really don't want it here. Trust me this is by far the largest war on women. I have two daughters and it scares the heck out of me. There comes a time when you have no choice but to stand up for the rights of your own. As a country I beleive in freedom of religion... UNTIL IT INTERFERES WITH OTHERS EQUAL RIGHTS. I am a christian and in this country you have freedom to beleive as you will. If you want to be an atheist .. you have that right .. If you want to pray to some green demi-god frog you have the right. But the fact of the matter is that these countries want all christians removed from their continent and it will be eventually the earth and that is not acceptable. My biggest complaint with the Obama administration is 1. They are pressing for gun control that will remove our rights to protect ourselves and that will not happen to me EVER. 2 The Obama administration claimed that his administration would be the most transparent ever. Cover ups in the fast & furious and Libya have proven this to be a lie. I will NOT claim that Romney will be any better, but I want to give someone else a try. Honestly , I think most Americans want the same thing... we are all " guessing " as to what way is the best way to get there. I think Gadaffi and Assad are and were animals ... problem is the replacements of rebels are not any better. I think we need to be like a hockey referee .. let them fight it out till they are tired and then maybe step in to help.... God only knows I could be wrong also

Daddy, thats exactly how I view the occupation of Palestine lands by Israel, if you look as Indians = Israelis with a modern military and they were kicking off US citizens off their ancestral lands. How would you react if all you had was hand guns and home made bombs? The NRA and other far right organizations would have you believe that they are protecting you against gun control from the evil Obama. Organizations like this need to scare people like you to fund them, reality is there has been no gun control legislation yet you still buy into the propaganda of far right organizations that they are protecting your rights, as long as you send them lots of money.

Square Dude: The desire of the Muslims to commit Jewish genocide has existed since the days of Allah and did not start with the onset of the Arab-Israeli conflict. With regards to imposing Sharia law, they make no distinction between lands originally Muslim and lands that they conquered by force. They are also not in favor of "peaceful solutions," and prefer to kill or be killed. They believe that the Jews started the French Revolution and the first and second world wars and their views on Jews and financial institutions are comparable to the Nazis. They claim freedom of all religions under Islam though go on to say that "Israel, Judaism and Jews challenge Islam and the Moslem people" and that "Peace and quiet would not be possible except under the wing of Islam."

                              18 August 1988

                              Article Six:

The Islamic Resistance Movement is a distinguished Palestinian movement, whose allegiance is to Allah, and whose way of life is Islam. It strives to raise the banner of Allah over every inch of Palestine, for under the wing of Islam followers of all religions can coexist in security and safety where their lives, possessions and rights are concerned. In the absence of Islam, strife will be rife, oppression spreads, evil prevails and schisms and wars will break out.

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant
                              him salvation, has said:

"The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, (evidently a certain kind of tree) would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews." (related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).

                              Article Eleven:

The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered: it, or any part of it, should not be given up. Neither a single Arab country nor all Arab countries, neither any
king or president, nor all the kings and presidents, neither any organization nor all of them, be they Palestinian or Arab, possess the right to do that. Palestine is an Islamic Waqf land consecrated for Moslem generations until Judgement Day. This being so, who could claim to have the right to represent Moslem generations till Judgement Day? This is the law governing the land of Palestine in the Islamic Sharia (law) and the same goes for any land the Moslems have conquered by force, because during the times of (Islamic) conquests, the Moslems consecrated these lands to Moslem generations till the Day of Judgement.

                              Article Thirteen:

Initiatives, and so-called peacefulsolutions and international conferences, are in contradiction to the principles of the Islamic Resistance Movement. Abusing any part of Palestine is abuse directed against part of religion. Nationalism of the Islamic Resistance Movement is part of its religion. Its members have been fed on that. For the sake of hoisting the banner of Allah over their homeland they fight. "Allah will be prominent, but most people do not know."

                              Article Fifteen:

"I swear by the holder of Mohammed's soul that I would like to invade and be killed for the sake of Allah, then invade and be killed, and then invade again and be killed." (As related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).

                              Article Twenty-Two:

For a long time, the enemies have been planning, skillfully and with precision, for the achievement of what they have attained. They took into consideration the causes affecting the current of events. They strived to amass great and substantive material wealth which they devoted to the realisation of their dream. With their money, they took control of the world media, news agencies, the press, publishing houses, broadcasting stations, and others. With their money they stirred revolutions in various parts of the world with the purpose of achieving their interests and reaping the fruit therein. They were behind the French Revolution, the Communist revolution and most of the revolutions we heard and hear about, here and there. With their money they formed secret societies, such as Freemasons, Rotary Clubs, the Lions and others in different parts of the world for the purpose of sabotaging societies and achieving Zionist interests. With their money they were able to control imperialistic countries and instigate them to colonize many countries in order to enable them to exploit their resources and spread corruption there.

You may speak as much as you want about regional and world wars. They were behind World War I, when they were able to destroy the Islamic Caliphate, making financial gains and controlling resources. They obtained the Balfour Declaration, formed the League of Nations through which they could rule the world. They were behind World War II, through
which they made huge financial gains by trading in armaments, and paved the way for the establishment of their state. It was they who instigated the replacement of the League of Nations with the United Nations and the Security Council to enable them to rule the world through them. There is no war going on anywhere, without having their finger in it.

                              Article Twenty-Eight:

Israel, Judaism and Jews challenge Islam and the Moslem people. "May the cowards never sleep."

                              Article Thirty-One:

The Islamic Resistance Movement is a humanistic movement. It takes care of human rights and is guided by Islamic tolerance when dealing with the followers of other religions. It does not antagonize anyone of them except if it is antagonized by it or stands in its way to hamper its moves and waste its efforts.

Under the wing of Islam, it is possible for the followers of the three religions - Islam, Christianity and Judaism - to coexist in peace and quiet with each other. Peace and quiet would not be possible except under the wing of Islam. Past and present history are the best witness to that."

There are fairly clear reasons for the inter-ethnic violence. Unlike nation-states in Europe, modern Lebanese, Jordanian, Syrian, and Iraqi nationalities did not evolve. They were arbitrarily created by colonial powers.

In 1919, in the wake of World War I, England and France as Mandatories (e.g., official administrators and mentors) carved up the former Ottoman Empire, which had collapsed a year earlier, into geographic spheres of influence. This divided the Mideast into new political entities with new names and frontiers.

Territory was divided along map meridians without regard for traditional frontiers (i.e., geographic logic and sustainability) or the ethnic composition of indigenous populations. The prevailing rationale behind these artificially created states was how they served the imperial and commercial needs of their colonial masters. Iraq and Jordan, for instance, were created as emirates to reward the noble Hashemite family from Saudi Arabia for its loyalty to the British against the Ottoman Turks during World War I, under the leadership of Lawrence of Arabia. Iraq was given to Faisal bin Hussein, son of the sheriff of Mecca, in 1918. The manner in which European colonial powers carved out political entities with little regard to their ethnic composition not only led to this inter-ethnic violence, but it also encouraged dictatorial rule as the only force capable of holding such entities together.

Hanko..I agree. I'm no isolationist where our help is warranted. But the Middle East is going to implode itself one way or the other. They use Israel as their excuse to vent their frustrations when it's their own governments playing hide and seek with jobs, taxes and education.

What should America do when there are countries who are so adamant that they want no part of the 21st century much less the last 10 centuries? The Middle East is a hell hole and always will be. But, that doesn't mean the US and all of the other countries of the world can't live without them.

The only tie we have in the Middle East is one we should be shutting down: Big Oil. Once you see just how much of a monopoly Big Oil has become and how it dominates every man, woman and child in the US, you realize how insane it is to continue to allow a single dollar more in tax subsidies to fossil fuel industries. Big Oil would be dead 20 years ago if not for a vicious circle of extracting more money from consumers with higher and higher gas prices as if we are oil addicts who can't hit bottom. Then, factor in the savaging of our economy to dump trillions of tax subsidies in the past 30 years to Big Oil and taxpayers take the second hit. Only one state profits from that and they call themselves "Big Rich Texas....That Whole Other Country." A whole other country that relies on tax dollars from taxpayers in every other state.

Or should we help the government against these rebels because they at least some of them support AlQaeida or should we just stay out of it and let that country draw its own fate? My opinion is stay out of it if Romeny what's us to get involved them have his boys join the military and fight for what their daddy believes just like the ex mayor of Chicago, Daley, whose son joined the military and is in Afghanistan. Ok I forgot they would rather punch out the president than go to a real fight.

Jordan is still sort of friendly to the US, but let us hope they decide to keep these terrorists under lock and key until their executions and not release them to the US -- where they would get a civilian trial and be released to fight again. Jordan has a bit of history of being able to run its own affairs without US intervention.
