At least 22 people were killed when a fuel truck crashed into an overpass in Saudi Arabia's capital, triggering an explosion that caused the collapse of an industrial building. NBCNews.com's Alex Witt reports.
Updated at 9:41 a.m. ET: RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - At least 23 people were killed when a fuel truck crashed into an overpass in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Thursday, triggering an explosion that brought down an industrial building and torched nearby vehicles, officials and state media said.
Health ministry spokesman Saad al-Qahtani said 135 people were injured in the disaster. He told state television they were mostly men and included some foreigners.
Only one corner of the building, which was several stories high, was left standing, Reuters reported.

"The truck driver was surprised by a road accident on its route, causing it to crash into one of the pillars of the bridge," civil defense department spokesman Captain Mohamed Hubail Hammadi said.
Twisted metal
Although the incident took place near the headquarters of the Saudi Arabian National Guard and the Prince Nayef Arab College for Security Sciences, officials speaking on state television said it was an accident. Saudi Arabia has been a target for al-Qaida attacks in the past.

Smoke rises after an explosion in eastern Riyadh on Thursday.
Rubble, twisted metal and shattered glass littered a wide stretch of the surrounding area.
"I was inside the building when the blast came. Then boom, the building collapsed. Furniture, chairs and cabinets blasted into the room I was in," said survivor Kushnoo Akhtar, a 55-year-old Pakistani worker, who was covered in dirt and bleeding from multiple cuts over his body. "My brother is still inside under the rubble. There are lots of people in there."

Several adjacent buildings were damaged and nearby vehicles, including a minibus on the overpass, were set on fire, witnesses said.
Abdullah al-Saery, a witness who arrived on the scene soon after the explosion, said the destruction was "everywhere", buildings, cars and a bridge were all destroyed.
"The number of those who lost their lives is definitely going to increase due to the huge explosion and the damage caused to buildings in the area," al-Saery told Al Jazeera.
The blast, which struck at around 7.20 a.m. local time, was on one of the capital's busiest roads but because Saudi Arabia is still observing the Eid al-Adha holiday, traffic was lighter than normal.
The wrecked industrial building housed operations of Zahid Tractor, a distributor of heavy machinery.

The Saudis announced they were going to tear down Muhammed's Tomb. That's right. They want to build a great big tacky one in its place because they think the current one is too small.
Didn't they consider maybe not everyone was going to be very happy about this? Or maybe a little homicidally annoyed?
Thank you, I thought I read the story wrong. How about Benghazi, have you got some insider information on that also if so next time would you please tell the President before he makes a fool of himself!
Sounds like more than just a gas truck exploded to cause that kind of damage.
Unfortunately, this was an accident. It should have be done by a suicide bomber to qualify for 72 virgins.
"Saudi Arabia has been a target for al-Qaida attacks in the past."
If atrocities and barbarism on girls, children and women are the criteria, then the most despotic, autocratic and bigoted Sunni Saudi ruler with his 5000 princes and princesses, Kuwaiti, UAE and other Arab League Sunni rulers and their rich sheiks are the biggest culprits in the history.
These people are supposed to be in 21st century.
Also some of the princes have been looting in Mecca and Medina.
So Sunni Islamic religious reformers like al-Qaida, MB, Salaffi, Wahhabi and other pure Sunni Islamists should blow up all the Sunni rulers, who are bringing a bad name to Islam.

david: I am ignoring your comments. So I will not be replying to the craps you write!
As Allah is furious even your Netanyahus' jumps and dances all over can't save your Sunni Saudis and co!
Their own Allah has predicted end of Islam!
Most know that what you write don't make sense; you don't know facts; and realities well either! You cook up Unbelievable stories.
You, uneducated lastly get down to correcting English also!
Sounds like a good BBQ ...
What do these loony comments have to do with the story?
Umm... I'm not sure this was an accident. Certain terrorist groups (one name Al Qaeda, which would like to bring down the House of Saud) has been known to use airplanes to blow up buildings. Is it too far a stretch to think that they might use a fuel tanker to do the same?
They have used fuel trucks in the past. Look at Kobar towers.
The explosion was huge in its magnitude and rocked about 20% of the city (north east). It occurred beneath a major passover that connects the city with an important segment that holds the national guard, national guard hospital (one of the biggest hospitals in the country), many colleges and other vital facilities.
According to those who reported the event from the scene, the explosion was caused by a liquid truck trying to evade a minor car crash that was blocking the road in which the truck driver lost control of the truck causing it to flip and hit one of the passover's beams. The gas started to leak out of the truck, and in a matter of seconds the whole place got saturated with gas and the explosion occurred.
The explosion caused the cars in the area to burn, killing their passengers. It also caused the glass walls of many businesses in an area of a radius of ~8km to shatter.
The passover's structure was severely damaged, and it looks like it's going to fall down at any moment.
Your report is more informative than Reuters! :)
A tragedy for everyone involved. It makes my heart ache to know the people trapped in cars couldn't get out. Still now sure how an accident beneath an underpass could cause a building to explode.
Beakeeper:
When the gas leaked out to the atmosphere, it saturated a wide area (radius of 300m according to the officials). Something caused the gas to explode and it caused everything within immediate proximity to level.
For pictures of the incident:
cutepathogen, thank you for writing such an excellent explantion. I now know what happened and that it was not terrorism. Please send your writing bill to MSNBC as they missed all the key points.
Instead of this accident, it should have been caused by nuclear explosion. Less of world problems.
At last an intelligent comment. Thank you there is still hope for America
Beakeeper,It is nice to know that there are people like you that care about their fellow human beings no matter the country in which they reside. This horrific accident made for a sorrowful day for those who lost family members or had family injured by this accident.
Riyadh City's Civil Defense spokesman Captain Mohamed Hubail Hammadi- 14 confirmed dead- 60 wounded (some badly)and the reason-so Obamasque= a truck carrying gas was involved in a traffic accident on Khurrays Road (main traffic artery)whereby the gas started leaking causing the accident in ther industrial building (warehouse+offices)of Zahic Tractor- the blast leveling the HIGHRISE building almost completely and damging nearby bui;ldings and the burning of vehicles nearby.Everyone can draw their own conclusions- remember Khyber Towers where US personnel killed. The question is- who is behind- the Iranians with the Palestinian/Egyptian Salafists or Al Qaeda Palestinian/AQAP Salafists.
Reliable sources (yle,fi)reports that now 22 confirmed dead and 110 woundewd/injured.
More the merrier! Let hate marchers and jihadi killers on earth!
Followers of Islamic cult, especially Sunni Saudi inspired Islamic radicals and militants (al-Qaida, Salaffi, Wahhabi, MB, Taliban and other label ones), are fast marching backwards to their seventh century desert tribal days.
They are indulging in rapings, lootings, killings and genocides of non-Muslims (Darfur, S. Sudan, Nigeria and spreading like wild fire in many regions and Muslims (Libya, Yemen, Mali, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan and other places).
Sunni Saudi backed Salaffi and MB new chapters are opening up in Egypt. Just watch the fate of Christians, women and Israel as the time goes by.
Even in Syria, if Assad is overthrown by Sunni Islamic religious Nazis like al-Qaida, MB, the conditions of Christians will be unbearable just like Iraq.
Pakis and Sunni Saudis and co are responsible for 80 percent of world problems including economic ones. Examine the devastations with Iraqi wars and now sanctions on Iranian oil and the resultant oil price manipulations.
They are making the lives of their own people also miserable by their Islamic religious madness to the intolerable levels.
Jonathan Your a case of the pot calling the kettle black! Hate knows hate
Karen Britton: I am only hating for their hate marches and killings! I am not giving back what they gave!

Wasserman-Schultz defends her party against suggestions that the Democrats are anti-Israel, saying "I would stack up the Democratic caucus's position on the support for Israel against the Republican caucus's any day of the week and be much more confident—and the Jewish community should be much more confident—in the Democrats' stewardship of Israel than the Republicans, especially if you compare the underlying reasons for both groups' support for Israel. The very far right group of Republicans' interest in Israel is not because they are so supportive of there being a Jewish state and making sure that Jews have a place that we can call home. It has references to Armageddon and biblical references that are more their interest. So I would encourage members of the Jewish community to put their faith in Democrats, because our support for Israel is generally for the right reasons."
Get the facts for goodness's sake. Ask yourself who was in ther White House being briefed/accommodated/given access to the NSA/DOJ. MB rules there- terrorist attacks are either workplace incidents or killing a US Ambassador in Libya a pump in the road- a video on youtube-anything but the veritas. Iran's nuclear bombs-let's talk. Mali Salafists- Algeria please attack them- Jordan MB/AQ is soon ruling- Vladimir after elections more flexibility- US is not a Christian nation-Islam is the cornerstone of Western civilization- etc. Obama since his childhood has had the influence of Bandung philosophy. Last but not least what does Obama call the sacred ground in Jerusalem- The Dome of the Rock-not Temple Mount.
The only upside to the Hurricane Sandy destruction in the USA is that there has been so few pictures or news stories from the middle east it's like they don't exist anymore.
I never like to hear about death and destruction, but this report did not actually say what this 'factory' produced, but only that it was a 'distributor' of heavy machinery. I wonder what else was inside to support such a terrible blast.
The article did not explain the cause of the blast very well - the 'fuel truck' in the accident was carrying LP gas. It ruptured and leaked out quickly, building up to an explosive concentration beneath the overpass. When something ignited it, there was enough fuel mixed in the air to support a very large explosion.
LP gas will not explode unless ignited by something....Could have been the fuel IN the turck that ignited the LP gas?? Could have been a detonator that caused it to ignite...Since this is Saudia Arabia we will never get all of the story since they will never admit that AlQaeda ahs ties with many of it's people...
Their clothing gets caught in stuff. Shift levers, fan belts, etc. Machinery was not designed for Medieval clothing styles.
What kind of crap statement is this? The article clearly stated the 'explosion' was a result of a traffic collision which caused another collision creating the 'boom'. Morons!!!!
RFFN!!!
Ahkmed was the drive..... Premature detonation.... PKKKKK!!!!!
What was the gas truck loaded with? Last time I checked they don't "explode" with enough force to level a building, they burst and dump gas everywhere creating a fire storm for sure, but they don't explode like a bomb. This is terrorism pure and simple, but the Saudis are very hesitant to admit terror attacks. I was in Saudi on 9/11 and have intimate knowledge of 2 attacks that came in the days that followed. A suicide bomber blew up 2 Americans in Dhahran and a bombing of a hardware store in Dhahran. Both incidents the Saudis claimed it was something else initially and still claim that it was a faulty propane tank that blew up the hardware store. I guess because Muslims are so peaceful that it is impossible for any violence to happen in the birthplace of Islam.....
Liquified natural gas... and it does go boom in a very big way.
LNG... even so.. not likely to cause shock wave damage 8k from the incident. Big fire, yes, some explosive properties. yes. take down a reinforced concrete overpass. maybe.. more than likely not.
There are many accidents all around the world involving tanker trucks loaded with all sorts of highly combustible gases and liquids.. I don't recall any causing this type of damage or loss of life.
When a tanker loaded with LNG bursts a cloud forms. When the ratio of fuel to air reaches reaches a particular point and it is ignited, the blast is devastating. That's exactly how our most powerful conventional bombs work. Think the MOAB.
It's about time the terrorists attacked the bankers of the terrorists...bush's butt buddies the saudis were the funders of 911 and many other attackes against US interests....
and Soros has been funding the terrorism against this country for the last 3 1/2 years.
Wow Rick...I learned something new...No other President supported the Saudi Government in the History of our Presidents, except Bush....Neat-o...
If the container quickly ruptured and allowed the contained gas to ignite, it would be similar to an explosion. Generally gasoline burns, well the vapors ignite/burn, the liquid does not ignite. An intial leak could saturate the ground, ignite and a fire may or may not cause the trailer to heat up and rupture. This quick release of the heated liquid could have immediately went to a gaseous state (not best way to state it, but using general terms it is hard to relay message). Not sure if trailers are double hulled similar to how railroad cars are. Also the article states fuel, no telling if that is similar to our gasoline, jet fuel, or other higher octane types of liquids.
Whole of backstabbing and ungrateful Saudi Arabia and Pakistan deserve to be wiped out of the map. They are responsible for 80 percent of world problems including economic ones.
Just like before each Iraqi wars, autocratic, highly corrupt and despotic bigoted Sunni Sunni Saudi, UAE, Qatar, Kuwaiti and Sunni oil rich nations are stage managing their dances and actions through oil companies, extremist Jewish lobbys, Christian right and their puppets in the US, Britain, EU and other nations on Syria and Iran.
In Syria Syrian rebels are backed by Sunni Islamic killers a-Qaida and MB. In Egypt, Islamic fundamentalist Morsi is a front cover for the Sunni Islamic extremist Salaffi, MB and others.
With sanctions on Iranian oil, oil prices which was around $40 in 2009 has crossed $110 now.
If Iraqi wars gave us PIIGS, there will more nations added to PIIGS.
As austerity measures wind up all UN and its agencies and partisan and most worthless IMF and WB.
ME is not our business. Just keep miles away.
IRAQ WARS
Net results of Saudi, Kuwait, UAE, oil companies and their lobbyists directed 1991 and 2003 Iraqi wars are
WINNERS
1. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE and other rich ME sharks became richer by manipulating oil prices too high.
2. Oil companies and their lobbyists also benefitted. Oil prices, which were hardly $30 a barrel before 1991, shot up to $140 a barrel.
3. Since 2003, future traders, rating agencies, Wall Street and oil companies and their lobbyists transferred five trillion dollars from oil importing countries to oil exporting nations.
4. Rich Sunni ME sharks (Saudi Arabia in particular) funded Salaffi and Wahhabi mosques and Islamic radicals and terrorists all over the world. These Sunni Islamic radicals and terrorists are rampaging all over the world. World’s 80 percent of problems are due to them.
LOSERS
1. General US and European nations’ public. There have been high unemployment, cut in welfare measures, housing market collapse and more miseries. Since 2001, US spent three trillion dollars on Iraq and Afghan wars. Did the Saudis and co foot the bill?
2. Poor soldiers killed and injured and their families. In Iraq and Afghan wars 6300 soldiers were killed and 40000 injured.
3. High budget deficits and heavier borrowing. Many nations (PIIGS) and people are on line to bankruptcy!
4. Iraq will plunge into bloody sectarian civil wars leading to the creation of Shiastan, Sunnistan and Kurdistan. Here the losses are of Iraqis.

David, if you're going to spam get your facts right.
The Shia Islam sect only counts as 10-20% of the total world Islamic population and the majority in the country of Iran and nearby smaller nations.
Sunnis are the majority around 75%-90% of the entire Muslim world with Indonesia being the most populated.
Pretty sad to get your information wrong when you spammed it like over two times like an annoying parrot.
gas prices just went up....
Fuel trucks don't just explode because they got into an accident. Despite what Hollywood likes to portray, this is very unlikely. And the fact that it wrecked an "industrial" building all by itself is also highly unlikely. This was a rigged deal, had to be. Terrorism in the financial capital of terrorism...how appropriate.
The fuel lost in that fuel truck is only a fraction of the fuel loss in the USA because Obama rejected the Keystone Pipeline yet the President uses fuel guzzling Air Force One, what a hypocrite.
dude... ... really?
The Keystone pipeline is to be used to transport crude to Texas refineries and then on to export. It won't help our fuel supply in the least, just the profit margins of the Canadian producers.
in other words, redphish, per your logic, to hell with American jobs, how dare we employ people in the USA. Speaking of Refineries, lack of supply in NJ and some parts of NY now mostly due refineiries shut downs in that area. The Environmental Wackos rather have still no new refineries built for over 30 years, yet hop on their gas guzzliers to protest "oil", what hypocrites. Too bad people like redphish stop supplies to our refineries causing the short of gas to the US consumer.
No, I say balance the benefits with the liabilities. You might start with not falsely stating that this pipeline will lower the price of fuel in this country. It won't.
If a route for the pipeline can be found that will minimize the risk from spills, then I say go ahead and build it. From the history of the company that will be building and operating it, there will be spills.
Please provide evidence that a lack of refinery capacity is causing a shortage of gasoline anywhere in the US except perhaps in California where they went a bit too crazy with specialty blends.
But for oil who will care for Saudi Arabia?
Despite all technological advances, it is unbelievable that substitues for oil are not being used.
Sooner we get the substitutes for oil, better it will be for world economy and most of us!
are you serious?! in order to liquify the gas it must be put under tremendous presure so if the tank ruptures..oh ya BIG BADDA BOOM!!!!!
Worldwide, there were 14.8 million natural gas vehicles by 2011, led by Iran with 2.86 million, Pakistan (2.85 million), Argentina (2.07 million), Brazil (1.7 million), and India (1.1 million).[5] with the Asia-Pacific region leading with 5.7 million NGVs, followed by Latin America with almost 4 million vehicles.[2]
Several manufacturers (Fiat, Opel (General Motors), Peugeot, Volkswagen, Toyota, Honda and others) sell bi-fuel cars. In 2006, Fiat introduced the Siena Tetrafuel in the Brazilian market, equipped with a 1.4L FIRE engine that runs on E100, E25 (Standard Brazilian Gasoline), Gasoline and CNG.
Any existing gasoline vehicle can be converted to a bi-fuel (gasoline/CNG) vehicle. Authorized shops can do the retrofitting, this involves installing a CNG cylinder in the trunk, installing the plumbing, installing a CNG injection system and the electronics.
wonder..?Why?
If compressed natural gas is so dangerous.. why does virtually half the world depend on it for fuel..?
And...
Why is the United States so reluctant to put it in service? When we (the United States) currently have a glut of natural gas?
Don't forget Benghazi.... or our border patrols shot be Mexican drug lords while using our weapons!
Kelly...Ya instead of trolling every thread maybe just troll the ones that might pertain to you "view"...
musta been the video
Looks like the US governments covert operatives are busy in Saudi. I wonder how long before we start arming the rebels in Saudi. Israel wins again with the help of the US government. Another Arab country in a civil war started by outsiders.
One explosion and before the facts, then people like Gary Hanson-737542 come out with blame America First Mentality. Psst, Gary Hanson, there is a US Flag still under your bed that you still have not burned. Reminds me of someone blaming Free Speech in the USA for a Consulate attack by an AL-Queda Inspired Group
The headline should specifically indicate this blast was not terrorism related.
would you take their word for it?
Probably someone smoking at the annual Kimchi festival.
Truth may yet explode and change you:
The comments seem to come from the same groups that lovingly send about $300 billion for foreign oil. It is one thing to want a divorce in a bad marriage, and another to repeal every law allowing divorce, dispute every religious admonition against it and demanding more arranged marriages.
If you don't like where your car gets its gasoline, and are afraid of economy running on empty, then it might just be good idea to reduce the need to remain married to those oil foreign countries. It might be good to find ways to produce (jobs) alternate energy equipment, to arrange for energy saving infrastructure, and to direct your remaining resources to produce more and waste less. There has to be something wrong with the brains of those to who believe that the arranged marriage of unhappiness needs to last longer.
From practical point of view if you could invest a tithe every four years, toward replacing the energy dependent and energy wasteful infrastructure we currently use. There is only one hard choice that we have to make; it is to dedicate a generation or two productions toward solving the energy problem, forever. We could dedicate 2.5 percent per year of GDP, every year toward this goal, 40 years from now - problem solved.
If we compare the per capita energy production from all sources with all the possible renewable resources we see that we only have maximum energy growth potential factor of 6.33. The world energy standard of living can only increase by this amount. This may sound like plenty; however current usage in the development world is already at this maximum. If you realize, that the entire underdeveloped world can absorb this energy growth, then you can see that we are already at practicable peak where our standard of living cannot increase, without this kind of effort. Essentially we are saying that any additional delay of even this long term plan will make it even longer, for the simple reason that we are burning the oil and the dollars without realizing that this is all we have.
Not having the truth can change you:
Yes we can be certain the Saudi govt is being completely truthful about this "accident" ?
