Updated at 12:10 a.m. ET: A strong earthquake, followed by two milder shocks, rocked central Myanmar on Sunday morning, and at least one person was reported to have died.

A USGS map shows the location of a 6.6 magnitude earthquake Sunday morning in Myanmar.
The U.S. Geographical Survey said the epicenter of the 6.8-magnitude temblor that hit at 7:42 a.m. local time was about 17 miles east of Shwebo, or 72 miles northwest of Mandalay, and six miles underground. The USGS revised the magnitude up from 6.6.
Two milder quakes estimated at 5.0 magnitude struck about 20 minutes later about 50 miles northwest of Mandalay, USGS reported.
A police officer in Shwebo told Reuters that one woman had died and 10 people had been injured in Kyauk Myaung.
The website of Weekly Eleven magazine said five people were killed in the collapse of a bridge under construction over the Irrawaddy River in Shwebo, The Associated Press reported.
"This is the worst earthquake I felt in my entire life," said Soe Soe, a 52-year-old Shwebo resident.
According to Soe Soe, the huge concrete gate of a monastery collapsed and several sculptures from another pagoda were damaged in the town.
Residents from Mandalay, the second biggest commercial city in central Myanmar, told Reuters that they felt a very strong tremor.
"I've never felt such strong tremor. I also heard some loud noises and the light went out. No idea about the damage,'' a resident said.
There were no reports of casualties or major damage in Mandalay.
Residents in Bangkok, the capital of neighboring Thailand, also said they felt the quake.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue any tsunami warnings.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to become the first American president to visit Myanmar during a Nov. 17-20 tour of Southeast Asia that will include Thailand and Cambodia, the White House said Thursday.
The quake was initially estimated at 7.0 magnitude but was revised lower by the USGS.
The USGS said much of the population exposed to the earthquake lives in structures vulnerable to shaking. The area has been subject to secondary effects of temblors such as landslides.

Bend over and put your head between your legs and kiss your azz good by, Dec. 21st is nearing!!!
You are kidding....right???
What the hell will you do when you wake up on December 22nd?
Any day could be doomsday on this planet - but, if I were agile enough to kiss my own ass, I'd stand a much better chance of survival if something does happen.
How many people met their doomsday during Sandy and Katrina? If you are the one who was doomed - what difference does it make how many survived?
That's what I usually say on Dec 21st. Realizing I haven't got my wife a Christmas present yet.
Mayan Calander doesn't have leap year so their Dec 21st 2012 has already come and gone. So much for your dooms day.
The government said we have nothing to worry about...but thousands have made arrangements to fly into Denver for the holidays...but have made no reservations in hotels?? Could it be the huge underground bunker under the new airport is getting a few unworried government guests?
Maybe it is the legal pot? Maybe our taxpayer dollars are being well spent. If the end does come...at least our politicians and rich are provided for.
In the event the world were to end on 12/21/2000, it sounds like an expensive mass communal tomb to me. It is amazing how many people are so focused on "Domesday" arriving. We seem a species which while progressing from agricultural base to industrialized has lost its way.Instead of the hope and wonder of a great future through our technology with all the benefits and blessings, we have created nightmares instead of so many dreams. Which are needed to sustain the efforts to join together to make a truly beautiful progressive better world for all happen.
It's no wonder we seem to have a death wish every so often. The world's end was predicted before 1 AD. and also at 1000 AD. People prepared for the world to be destroyed. Then 1900 as well as 2000, when Y2K was supposed to shut everything down, society turn back to the dark ages.Even religious people looked to the end of time. Comets were predicted to hit the earth, but still here we are.
It really looks like all those who wish mankind were destroyed, are pushing even harder now, believing in an ancient people's calender which has nothing to do with their world ending. But don't confuse some folks with that fact. It isn't what they want to hear. When the next day happens and they are still here on 12/22/2012, it will be a comet or rogue planet which will be their next candidate up for our destruction. Meanwhile earth will continue to shake, rattle, blow and flow
For those so interested, the following links may be of some interest. The first will provide an interactive map, with up to the minute information/pictures on current sensors placed across the United States, on islands and surrounding areas. As part of the Advanced National Seismic System designed to pickup any earthquake activity anywhere it happens, the instant it does. Which will have a network of 7000 sensors placed into the ground and inside buildings recording information. Which is fed back for instant analysis. A warning can even be sent to the center before the shock wave is felt.It is also able to predict tsunami factors as well. So resources can be mobilized immediately on a national, state, county and city level if need be. Saving lives.

This second link will show any earthquake activity from around the world. Most of which occurs on what is called the ring of fire. Where the earth's tectonic plates bump up against, slid past, apart or pass over or under each other. It also records volcano activities which are formed where hot magma pushes up between these spots to the surface.

The world ends everyday for lots of people, It begins everyday for lots more.
When it's your time it's your time
We can always send Hilary over there with billions of U.S. taxpayers money to give to that country. She made one trip and gave them our tax money just because their military dictator leaders did nothing more than trade in their uniforms for civilian clothes - Armani is expensive I guess and she wanted them to at least look good!
I hope their empty capital city and their highway that goes nowhere made it safely through the earthquake!
Don't wait, party down on the 20th of Dec.
Mother earth is obviously pissed off plenty what with all the big quakes, storms, you name it. Wake up call to all to treat her with a little more respect.
Thats Right!
Mother earth is doing what she has always done, She sleeps and awakens and twist and turns and yawns and burps and goes back to sleep, She does it at different times in different locations allover the planet, We are not having more earthquakes they are just reported faster because of electronic communications abilities.
In short our planet is not static and is constantly moving and shifting, It has always been that way, It is the reason we have seven continents and multitudes of Islands instead of the one big one land mass as it originally started out. Seismic activity destroys but it also creates.
someone is passing out the tin foil hats , no thanks Sue
It's the US Geological Survey not Geographical survey.
Read Matt. chapter 24, I'm not shocked, God said it would happen and now it's coming true for all those who think the Bible is a book a fairy tales, wrong and now you'll see the hand of God at work.
Oh boy - I better go see what my palm-reader has to say.
Go read what Matt has to say, right, because the Bible is sooooooooooooo specific and has no words of suggestion in it. I've read your little book - you can make just about any assumption out of those open ended passages that you want.
The Bible; a flip-floppers dream.
Watch South Park. The one with Britney Spears, I'm not sure which episode number.
So THAT'S the problem! god was masturbating! That usually ends in a volcano, especially when he takes Viagra. Guess this time he went limp before he could finish.
Fox: What do you religious freaks tell us?( It's wrong to just pick a part of the bible and preach it.)
You are blaming God...not humanity?
Nature happens. Stop blaming God for the way the Earth works.
No one is blaming your god. It is simply making a point that your superstitions of a god hold no water...just the blind fears of the ...stupid is the only word I can use for people unwilling to take the sheepskin off and think for themselves.
Between the Bible thumpers and the bible trashers I do not know which is worse, I got an idea, keep your beliefs or non beliefs to yourselves, If you are all so confident that your beliefs or non beliefs are correct then you should be confident enough that you do not have to go around trying to convince others that your way of thinking is the right way.
It is always sad when people suffer from tragedies, My thoughts are with the people affected by this and all tragedies.
THey are not who warns you bro, God is warning you. You either serve the world or him. If you dont want to worship either, the worship your parents, without them you dont exist. But, you dont want to do that either do ya???
Whats so funny is if you made the same effort to find God(good) as you do evil(satan), you wouldnt have any problem seeing him.
Attacking people for not believing the same outdated fairy tales as you is a bit evil.
No, I'm warning god. That prick has been "warning" us for thousands of years and it's time he pulled his head out of his ass and took responsibility for the earth he created.
Otherwise, he's going to wake up one night to find me standing there with my torture kit, and he'll wish he'd never been created.
Lol. How sad!
What are you talking about? Who says you have to worship anything? Get real, religion was created by man, thats why they can't agree on anything.
Please note god person. Not believing in your god does NOT mean we do believe in your devil. Why can't you see we have totally seen through all of your stupidstitions and hold none of your cult beliefs?
But I am wasting my words...you are all so brainwashed that you simply lack the ability to figure it out.
The earth is changing all by itself...we will all suffer through it and maybe we will perish. When you die you will finally see the light...and won't you feel...stupid.
If that is truly the case then why you you feel compelled to respond to anyone that mentions god or religion, Why are you so insecure in your non beliefs that you have to try to denigrate and minimalize someone who does believe. Why not just ignore them.
It truly is like a game between the two opposing views.
One shouting...I believe in God!!!! and the other shouting...There is no god!!!
LostInThePineBarrens..........
It truly is like a game between the two opposing views.
One shouting...I believe in God!!!! and the other shouting...There is no god!!
In this instance is it possible for there to be anything in between the two positions? You either believe or don't believe....it's that simple.
Johnnyt, There are a myriad of people in between the two extremes, The point was the shouting made the two polar opposites look ridiculous like little children fighting over a toy.
Lost....I disagree. This is strictly a yes or no issue.......there isn't any maybe to it. I believe the only reason most people get drawn into it is the fear that they will be ostracized if they don't take a stand. I agree whole-heartedly that they look very ridiculous. There's been more blood spilled over the issue of religion than anything else.
johhnyt, There are a wide spectrum of people that fit between those that believe in one god and those that believe in no god, So no it is not strictly a yes or no answer, I also disagree with your assumption that people get drawn into it for fear of being ostraciszed, It is almost impossible to look at someone and determine if the have any belief unless they are wearing some type of religious symbol or clothing or make a religious gesture. Even people who decorate their homes for Christmas may not believe in god but they may believe in the holiday. My closest neighbors never decorate for any holidays but they attend church regularly, My cousin does not believe in Jesus or God and yet decorates his house for Christmas because he enjoys the festivity of it.
I am glad you agree that both side look ridiculious, As for the blood spilled, I think you will find that man had the propensity to kill his fellow man long before religion and has continued killing, In fact if you look closely you will find that many of those killed were killed where religion was used as an excuse but not the reason, Hitler is a good example, He started with the jews and then moved to the Gypsys and the Christians and the Pols and Czecks and any other group that did not fit in his perfect Ayrian stereotype, Religion was the excuse but not the reason. Stalin,Mao,Kmer Rouge. Most all major wars have been fought over property(land) and control of resources, Eliminating the indigenous populace by demonizing them because of their beliefs was a very successful method of motivating your followers.
Lost......The last thing I want is a debate about God. One God, no God, many Gods......I have to stand by my comment......either you believe or you don't. It really is that simple.
Yes, it's impossible to tell by looking at someone if they're a believer or not. The fear of being ostracized doesn't come from people you don't know, but rather the people you do know. Most people like to be liked...it's important to them. Birds of feather kinda thing.
As to Hitler...I think he was trying to establish his own brand of religion, like you pointed out......sorta like Jim Jones. I don't think that belief/disbelief in God had much to do it. Mental illness, good acting skills, knowing how to target your audience, possibly a desire to be God....maybe.
Anyway....it's still a tragedy to anyone who was effected by the Earthquake.
hummm--god must of forgot that mitt wanted to be president- so much for getting what you pray for..hahaha
At Fox News they're blaming Obama :)
At Fox News they were wishing he was already there ...and he will ... but kiss off NYC and NJ post election photo op. they can freeze all he cares
He will give them $500 billion, since it is so easy to print.
Such a stupid comment...Here let me reciprocate.
At MSNBC or MSN or NBC or whatever it currently is they are blaming Bush ;~[]
Obama has run out of get out of @!$%# Bush tickets ,he's on his own now........
Are you kidding? Its going to take another twenty years to fix Dubya's mess.
What about the 6T your Daddy has added to our Master Card and will run it over 20T time your Daddy goes back to Kenya
hardcoffee .. it will be 20 pre 2014, and they will have to devalue the dollar to 50 cents in 2016 when it hits 23 or 24 (msnbc had a guy on from pacific something .. he has a phenomenal record of trending the deficiet. He said Romney could have kept it at 16 after it increased to 18 (ie get it back( in 4 years and in 8 reverse it) but Obama ... USELESS.
Wow, Republicans still mad they lost. Bush was incompetent, Romney was incompetent, Bonehead House Speaker is incompetent because he couldn't keep Obama from being reelected. The Republican party is looking to remake their image because their image is incompetence. Old school out of touch policies that are going exstinct. Those idiots are still struggling on how to get the female vote. The only reason the republican party was allowed to exist in the first place is because lack of internet allowed miscommunication for so long.
hd you're clueless, Romney wanted to use an economic policy that was already proven to fail and cost the government 1.34 trillion a year. Do some research you idiot. National Priorities Project doesn't lie.
Obama can never bring back the hundreds of thousands of lives destroyed by bush.
Oh the drama...Bull...There have been just as many lives destroyed by Democratic presidents as there have been Republican presidents, Over 58,000 of my brothers in arms lost their lives in Viet nam and millions of lives were destroyed during that conflict, Guess what we got over it.
Lost.....to answer your question.....many things.
One of them was more rich people and another was more dead people.
johhnyt...what question...my comment was that what happened under Bush was no different than what happened under JFK/LBJ yet both of them are seen as heros, Carter is viewed politically/economically as one of the worst president in the 20th century yet he is not villified like Bush has been.
I lived thru Viet Nam and the economic downturn after I came home, For me the Bush years were mostly prosperous. So when people scream that Bush was the evil monster I just do not see it, I look at the overall picture and see that mistakes have been made by both parties and that as Americans we have to move past those mistakes and work to the betterment of our Country.
I voted for Bush both times and if I had it to over again I would still vote for him.
Over 58,000 of my brothers in arms lost their lives in Viet nam and millions of lives were destroyed during that conflict, Guess what we got over it.
I read that comment as a question....guess what we got over it. When now, after reading your reply, I can see that it wasn't meant as a question, but rather as a comment...guess what(,) we got over it.
Sorry about that.
Also, with regards to Carter. I believe his accomplishments fall in a different category than Bush 41. Jimmy Carter became President at a time when the very foundations of the country were shaking. Vietnam wasn't very far in the past. Watergate. The Energy Crisis. Inflation AND unemployment running at rates that make our present condition look rosy. I suppose Carter could have gone to war against the Arabs with a huge amount of public support. But...he didn't. A great debate could probably take place over that one decision....let alone anything else.
Bush on the other hand, entered into office without any of those issues on the front burner. America was humming along like a perfectly running, well oiled machine.
Taking a country that's busting at the seams with problems, as Carter did, isn't anything like taking a country that's doing just fine. Look at the starting AND ending points of both Presidents and see who had the BIGGEST change in direction. I believe that's how you measure it. Was Carter a shining success? No. Was Bush? In my my opinion, no. Was Carter worse than Bush?
I think Carter gets the blame (undeservedly) for Americans finally coming to grips, even if only in a small way, to the idea that even though we were a superpower and sent men to the moon.... we didn't control the universe. Probably having that fireside chat in a sweater and telling everyone they should lower their thermostat to 68 degrees hurt him more than anything because it was admitting defeat to the Arabs. People were up in arms almost at the very suggestion we shouldn't be allowed unlimited opportunity to waste energy in any way we wanted. Carter suffered the backlash of pointing out the obvious. Not much has changed in that arena since....with almost any effort to develop other sources being the object of ridicule and scorn.
Burma!
Used to be Burma. Got tired of all the signs in the U.S. Decided to change their name to one of their own choosing.
Burma...Burma Shave...Burmese Python
Myanmar...Myanmar shave...Myanmarese Python
Just doesn't have the same ring to it!
They should have seen it coming...according to the map.
There is a big star, orange, yellow and green discoloration over their area.
Where the hell is this place??? Way to go MSN......
Don't blame them for the fact that you don't know anything about the world beyond the United States. They just changed their name from Burma to Myanmar in 1989.
Google it.
I knew where it is, but I've seen many articles, with more well known places, have their locations described in the articles about them. Would it have hurt anything to give a description of where it is located?
I say.......less than adequate reporting.
if this Strong earthquake strikes Myanmar or strong warning to Myanmar
if this Strong earthquake strikes Myanmar or strong warning to Myanmar strongly 6 Richter 6 miles away from the earth to the surface and massacres humanitarian glare of the world, whether the dead from any religion or belief
Huh??
Say what again? Never mind, please don't.
So anybody still believe the experts who keep saying all these earthquakes are not connected in anyway? The earthquakes can be viewed like a gigantic bowl of jello in relation to the earth. You jar one side and eventually the other side will start shaking, and then it swings back the other way.
And those pretty patterns on your windows on cold mornings can be viewed as Jack Frost at work..it won't be true, but it can be viewed that way.
2014 Midterm elections. Vote the rest of the dinosaurs out of congress. Republican incompetence held this country back long enough. America can't handle another Bush size display of republican failure and they're still pushing the same dumb policies.
Blah Blah Blah...What does any of what you just said have anything to do with an earthquake in Myanmar...Oh that's right , It doesn't , Please take your hate somewhere else troll.
These series of earthquakes happening around the world today were foretold by Jesus in Luke 21:5-11 as one of the signs of the nearing fall of the temples who taught that "he (jesus) is the christ" and that "the time of the end is near". Know why these temples are to fall through the following website: thename.ph
do a search engine here it is a watch it ok -doomsdaytube.com - and also nra.com/news just check out ok
also Matthew 24 tells us about the signs and also Daniel
Jesus is coming!!!!!!!
look busy.
Gotta say that's funny!! And probably descibes how many people behave.
Is it just me, or are we all of a sudden seeing a whole bunch of earthquakes? Ruh roh....
Actually it is just you, The frequency and magnitude has not grown but the reports have grown, The abilty to detect and report earthquakes via real time is what creates the illusion that there are more earthquakes.
Thank you Winddancersong your words are common sense and have meaning which is so laking these days. Unlike some others I will just go about my everyday life and take whatever comes. As the old saying goes "what will be. will be"Thank you for the links they are interesting.
To all of you pointing to god, please note the major religion in the area effected by the quake is Budihsm. This faulters your bible belief. Anyway, the earth is moving the plates are moving and the Ocean is moving. Thus the ground moves also, I cant make this any easier to understand.
Faulters? Is that a new word, that hasn't even made it to the dictionary yet? Just askin'. Oh, and last I knew the correct spelling of the religion you mentioned is Buddhism. Unless you are referring to the large cult of followers of the Anheuser Busch product known as Budweiser, also known as cat pee. Just sayin'.
Yes 89% of the population of Myanmar practice a form off Buddhism, Since Myanmar established it's independence both Christian and Muslim religions have faced persecution from the peoples and the government of Myanmar, I am not saying that God had anything to do with the earthquake but what I am saying is that for the Christians and the Muslims it could be viewed as God punishing the Buddhist populace of Myanmar for this persecution.
Yes the earth is not static and is constantly moving and changing and earthquakes and volcaniceruptions have been occuring since the formation of this planet but one could argue and don't get me wrong I am not arguing this point, But one could argue the point that God had something to do with the location of the earthquake.
People will believe what they believe, It is not right or wrong, It is just what some will believe.
@mymomdidnotraiseafool, Actually the word falter/s sometimes spelled faulter/s is in the dictionary, It has various meanings from stumbling, failing, losing forward momentum, etc The initial correct spelling is falter but it seems that the addition of the "u" has increased in popularity, A simple web search will bring up lots of results where the word faulters has been used, Not saying it is right or wrong. Just saying that it is a commonly used word.
More bad luck! When will it end?
The more people on this planet there are means more people that will be affected by this planets constant movement, It is inevitable that as the population increase that more and more people will be harmed by a planet that has been in constant movement since the day it was created.
Sad to hear people died. I hope their isnt any more found dead. Condolences to the families of the victims.
No fracking going on there, folks. Maybe something more sinister going on, like plate tectonics. Ban plate tectonics! Or better yet, just ban the reporting of such incidents -- like China does.
