Israel drawn into Syria conflict, fires missile across border

This file photo shows fire and smoke rising after shells exploded in the Syrian village of Bariqa, close to the ceasefire line between Israel and Syria, near Alonei Habashan on the Israeli occupied Golan Heights, Nov. 7, 2012.

JERUSALEM  -- The Israeli military has fired a missile into Syria, the first time Israel has been drawn into the fighting in the neighboring country.

The military said it fired the missile as a warning shot on Sunday after a stray mortar from Syria hit a military post in the Golan Heights. Israel captured the Golan from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war and subsequently annexed it.

The military says no damage or injuries were reported inside Israel.

A string of mortar shells have struck the Golan during the Syrian civil war. Israel views the fire as accidental, but nonetheless has warned that it holds Syria responsible.

It came as Syrian opposition groups, meeting in the Qatari capital Doha, signed an initial agreement to form a new coalition of forces fighting to end the rule of President Bashar Assad.

"An initial deal has been signed. The evening session will be for electing the president of the body and his deputy," Ali Sadreddine al-Bayanouni, a Muslim Brotherhood delegate, told reporters in Doha.

Ann Curry

Ann Curry photographs Syrian rebels and others affected by the conflict.

The new body, made up of groups inside and outside Syria, would be called the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces, delegates said.

The group's leader, once chosen, will automatically become the focal point for opposition activities.

U.S. diplomats and officials from Qatar, which has bankrolled opposition to Assad and played a major role in Arab diplomacy against him, have prodded the players over the past week to come to an arrangement.

Thousands have fled violence in Syria in the last 24 hours, with many Syrian refugees now sheltering in Turkish camps. In his latest interview, Syrian President Assad says his army is trying to avoid civilian deaths. NBC's John Ray reports.

The parties were close to a deal in the early hours of Sunday after Qatari and United Arab Emirates officials pressed them to agree, but it appeared to fall through when the meeting broke up at 3 a.m.

The Syrian National Council (SNC), which has led overseas opposition activity over the past year, had lost the confidence of Washington and other powers who saw it as ineffective and riven with personal disputes.

The new plan involves a 55- or 60-member assembly alongside a military council including rebel groups such as the Free Syrian Army and a judicial council.

It will seek to obtain international recognition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people and form a ten-member government-in-waiting, SNC member Wael Merza told Reuters.

At the talks in Doha bringing together various opposition groups, the SNC had been concerned at being sidelined in the wider body, a U.S.-backed proposal presented by prominent dissident Riad Seif.

As fighting rages in Syria with heavy air raids, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the U.S.  would push for a major revamp in Syria's opposition leadership. NBC's Keith Miller reports.

A source inside the meeting said the SNC had asked to continue the talks on Sunday but that it would be a "last chance", suggesting that opposition figures behind the U.S.-backed initiative are threatening to go ahead without the SNC.

International backers of the opposition fear that rapidly changing events on the ground could lead to Assad's rule collapsing and jihadist militias seizing the initiative in a power vacuum if no opposition body abroad is in a position to step in immediately.

Anti-Assad protests erupted nearly 20 months ago, meeting a violent response which led to a conflict that has cost more than 38,000 lives and threatens to spill into neighboring countries

Question to MSNBC News: Why do we now see a headline "Israel fires into Syria" but never saw a headline "Syria lobs mortars into Israel" or "Syria fires mortar shells into Israel provoking retaliation??"

      Your bias is showing.

I can answer your question, olde yankee. It is because MSNBC is banking on people only catching the headline and not reading the article. It's done in an effort to confuse or incite panic in people or to garner support for Syria among the people. I like you last mock headline, but that would be the entire article in a nutshell and no one would have to read it. Thus eliminating the other reason for the poorly written headline for this article... to get people to read it!

Israel has not joined the Syrian War- repeat- Israel has not joined the Syrian War. Israel fired an advanced Tammuz missile (an electro-optic missile) as a warning shot to Syria- into an eastern Goan post after Syria fired mortars into Israel. UN has been notified of the incident since UN has Peacekeepers in Golan Heights and they are supposed to guarantee demilitartized zone. After 3 Syrian tanks entered the demilitarized Golan Heights, after 3 Syrian mortars landed in Israel and after a 120 mm mortar shell landed today- a warning shot to Syria.

When did the "Seven Day War" become the 1967 Mideast war? Are we going to rename the "Hundred Years War" or the "War of the Roses" next? How about renaming WWI and WWII as well!

If the Israelis don't respond with some kind of ordnance the Syrians will just keep firing mortar rounds into Israel. Believe me it's no mistake that those mortar rounds are landing in Israel. The next time Israeli troops may be crossing the border to visit Assad's forces. I only wish the United States had the guts to do the same.

100% disabled Viet Nam Army officer, Purple Heart, Silver Star with V (valor), multiple trips into Cambodia... when the U.S. was lying and saying that we were not there! Great grandfather killed in World War I, grandfather wounded in World War II, father lost right leg in Korean War, me loss use of left arm and other body functions in the Viet Nam War and two sons in Iraq and currently Afghanistan wars.

Here we go again, sticking our nose into another country's war. We have been bank-rolling and arming radicals as long as I can remember. We have become the piggy-bank and weapons dealer for every cause in the Middle East... all in the name of Religion, Freedom and Democracy.

During each of these wars we have used another country to do our initial dirty work while we waited for an excuse to join in and kill millions of native people along with a few hundred thousand of our own.

Now it is Israel’s turn... we have armed them to the teeth and have backed their every exchange... legal or not... mostly not!

One of these days we are going to crap a big pile and fall into it face first! We need to stay out of these wars and advise Israel to do the same!

And for all of you arm-chair soldiers who have never been to war... don't even bother to respond because you have no idea what a "real war" is about! And often times, we are not there for the reasons that our "lying" government is releasing to the public!

And I've been to war, too. Sounds like you'd be happier if you just stayed in your bunker.

You might not like it, but this is the world we live in. Either deal with it or don't, but I wasn't kidding about the bunker. It sounds like it might be your only option unless you enjoy making yourself miserable.

Any discussion about Israel "illegal" moves requires specificity. Otherwise it is just boneheaded discussion that can not be taken seriously. Israel's right to exist was established in the League of Nations. England, on its own, created he state of Jordan, carving it out of Palestine, leaving the sliver that was to contain the state of Israsel and the state of Arab Palestine who can call themselves anything they want. The word Palestina was created by the Romans to demonstrate that the state of Israel had been destroyed and no longer existed. As we all know might Rome got it wrong.

I wonder why the press has not reported about the recent 70 or so stray missles fired by the Palestinians into Israel from Gaza. I believe the number is some 800 since the beginning of the year.

Over the past 24 hours, Palestinian terrorists have fired sine 70 rockets and mortars into Israel from Gaza, wounding three Israelis, causing damage to property and sending a million residents of the south into bomb shelters.

In fact, rockets have been fired at Israel on a regular basis. As of October 2012, over 800 rockets had been launched at Israel from Gaza since January 2012.

The mask has not merely slipped in Gaza. It is entirely off. Jihad, jihad, jihad. Use the word. The Arabs and Muslims are using it, day after day, not least in Gaza. It is a Jihad. It is prompted by the tenets of Islam, and those tenets do not say "compromise with the Infidels." Those tenets do not say "leave them with a tiny rump state." Those tenets do not say "Push them back to the pre-1967 armistice lines" or "Push them back until they are sufficiently small." No, Islam tells Muslims not to countenance, not to endure, any Infidel state, any state which permits non-Muslims the right to determine their own destiny, any entity or institution which would allow non-Muslims that modicum of power that would keep them from being reduced to the status of dhimmis -- no, neither the Qur'an, nor the Hadith, nor the example of Muhammad himself, permits such an interpretation.

Some, but not enough, Israelis, have come to understand this -- not enough in time to prevent the Gaza disaster. But whether the Israelis do or do not come to comprehend their enemy and the relentless Jihad against them, that is no reason for the rest of us, the Infidels outside the Middle East, not to recognize the nature of the war against Israel and how it merely prefigures, and is not the cause of, the larger world-wide Jihad against all Infidels, to be conducted with whatever means prove most efficacious. It does not make sense to pursue open military challenges to the West. It does make sense to divide and demoralize and terrorize not only that West, but all parts of the Infidel population, whether or not they are within dar al-Islam: the Christians who remain in the Middle East, along with the Jews in Israel, as well as the Hindus and Buddhists and Confucians in such Muslim-ruled countries as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, or even within Infidel lands where a small Muslim population still manages, as in Europe or Thailand or the Philippines or even India, to conduct attacks on Infidels despite the disparity in numbers.

Why is it that the Western world and Americans in particular fail to comprehend this and waste time actually ignoring the problem of Islam and pretending that the matter can somehow be solved if alternative regimes -- a primitive democracy rather than a primitive despotism in Iraq, for example -- will somehow help to contain the threat of Islam? It will do no such thing. The way to contain Islam is not to better the lot, still less to sacrifice one's own men and materiel and money to do so, of Muslims, however plausible some of the westernized representatives (Shalabi, Rend al-Rahim Francke, Kanan Makiya, Allawi himself), the unrepresentative representatives, may be. Rather, the way to contain Islam is to play upon and exploit the natural divisions within this or that Muslim state or population, so as to turn Muslim against Muslim, or, in the case of the Kurds, by supporting them to the hilt, to make the case of all non-Arab Muslims everywhere who wish to shake off the dominance of the Arab supremacist ideology for which Islam has always been a vehicle.

While the mask is off in Gaza, Western dhimmis are doing their utmost to keep it in place. I just finished watching a propaganda piece on the Bill Moyers show. It was all about some "Palestinian" Arab widows trying to make a go of it as the start-up owners of a pickle factory. I did not count the many occasions on which it was suggested -- no, stated -- that everything depended on Allah, the number of times "Inshallah" (God willing) and other phrases were inserted into conversations, not as mere rhetoric, but as expressions of deep belief. Inshallah-fatalism is not conducive to economic activity. It has its points: it can reconcile one to a miserable condition and even to the injustice of the very belief-system that is almost entirely responsible for that miserable condition. But industriousness, entrepreneurial flair, and the constant attention to detail that modern economies require are simply incompatible with the lessons and tenets of Islam, and the overall attitude of inshallah-fatalism cannot be ignored, for it pervades everything.

After the propaganda show was over, Moyers interviewed one Azza Karam, an Egyptian woman described as connected to the U.N. Commission on Arab Development (or some such name). She of course, when asked about the possible connection between the teachings of Islam and the miserable condition of these widows and of women under Islam, referred to "tribal culture." One would think that the cities of Islam -- from Cairo and Tunis and Damascus, all the way to Karachi and Dacca and Jakarta, owed the treatment of women to some "tribal culture." And even if one could pretend that "tribal culture" rather than Islam was responsible for the treatment of women in, say, Iraq (which does have a tribal culture in many areas), could the same be said for Cairo? And even if we were to pretend that this "tribal culture" explained the position of women in the Middle East and North Africa, what "tribal culture" is there in Jakarta?

And even if we were, just for the hell of it, to pretend that it was "tribal culture" that explained the mistreatment of women everywhere in dar al-Islam, then how would we explain the same mistreatment of Muslim women in the Muslim areas of London, Paris, Milan, and Barcelona? The lingering effects of "tribal culture"? And what about the treatment of Western women who marry Muslim men, whether those women "revert" to Islam (i.e., convert) or not? Is their mistreatment, which has been so widely reported (not least after they flee those marriages that are often of convenience -- to the green-card seeking Muslim groom), the result of their "tribal culture"?

The viewer saw Azza Karam's attempt to defend Islam at all costs -- in her constant refusal to even permit the slightest hint that just maybe, there was something in the Qur'an, in the Hadith, in the Sira, that might cause Muslim men to act as they do (and there is, there is), and put the kind of restrictions they do on Muslim women -- as the transparent taqiyya it is. But no matter how often one views this spectacle -- of the Muslim who is intelligent, personable (up to a point), and seemingly part of the same rational universe, and yet who suddenly reveals that coute que coute, that person is going to lie about, to dissimulate, to hide, the truth about Islam, for Islam must never ever be subject to a hint of criticism – it is always stunning.

Really, Azza Karam's performance was astonishing, and most enlightening. One hopes that many non-Muslims will be able to -- as we old vaudevillians say -- catch her act. The things she does with masks are breathtaking.

It's not all about Israel (courtesy of Hugh Fitzgerald)

The Arab war against Israel is a classic Jihad. It can be called the Lesser Jihad, and began before the advent of OPEC oil money, and the mass migration of Muslims behind Infidel (enemy) lines. It began because Israel is in the midst of the dar al-Islam and is an Infidel state run by the heretofore despised Jews -- a particularly intolerable affront.

But the Lesser Jihad against Israel is merely a subset of the Greater Jihad against non-Muslims in general; it is not, as appeasers of the Throw-Israel-to-the-Wolves variety argue, a substitute for it. The larger Infidel world is now subject to what can no longer be hidden: the classic Jihad to spread Islam until it covers the globe, and Islam and Muslims everywhere dominate. To many non-Muslims, this seems to be a fantastic dream. But it is not. Do the demographic math. In Holland, thirty years ago, there were 15,000 Muslims. Today, there are one million -- and the country is a much more unpleasant, expensive, and dangerous place as a result, and the Dutch do not know what to do.

In France, there are 5-7 million Muslims. Some "integrate." Some (especially Berbers) even leave Islam. But most do not. And there is always the possibility that the seemingly well-integrated may, for obscure as well as obvious reasons, and for personal as well as larger political reasons, "revert" to "immoderate" Islam. The same is true in Great Britain, Spain, Germany, and Belgium. Italy seems, for various peculiar reasons, the least likely to exhibit appeasement. Andreotti, that famous crook, was pro-Arab and anti-Israel merely out of the usual financial considerations, and not, one suspects, out of some failure to understand Islam: he was too intelligent for that, but may have suppressed his understanding because he felt the Arabs were too rich to offend, and he could not conceive that Islam was a civilizational threat -- possibly out of contempt for Islam itself.

Though very few would recognize it, the Infidels of Europe in fact owe the Israelis a debt. For it is the Israelis who, like a lightning rod, have until recently borne the brunt of Arab and Muslim hatred and attention. Only now, with the first feeble moves to constrain Islam and Muslm power in Europe (and the word "feeble" fits), are some in Europe beginning to look at the history of Jihad, to read Bat Ye'or on the treatment of non-Muslims, and to rediscover the texts.

These texts show that Jihad is not an intermittent but a constant feature of Islam, that it is not tangential but central, and that whenever Jihad seemed to disappear as a motivating force, it was only because Muslims were in a state either of contented ignorance about the outside world (as in a village under Ottoman rule), or were too obviously lacking in the wherewithal to conduct Jihad. But neither of those conditions, which alone explain the absence of the call to Jihad, any longer obtains. Now the wherewithal exists; it is the revenues from an accident of geology. The knowledge of the non-Muslim world also exists; indeed, Muslims have been permitted by non-Muslims to move en masse behind what the Muslims at least (or most of them) can only regard as enemy lines -- without that enemy comprehending what it has done to itself.

The Lesser Jihad against Israel is simply part of the Greater Jihad against all non-Muslims. And so are those other Lesser Jihads, such as that carried on against Hindus in Pakistan, where they have been persecuted and driven out; in Bangladesh -- ditto; in the Indian-controlled parts of Kashmir; and in India itself. Muslims view these various local jihads as related. They have no hesitation in mouthing over and over again the list: Palestine, Iraq, Kashmir, Bosnia, and so on. These are the places where the Infidels are militarily superior. But there are other Jihads within countries where the Muslims have been and remain superior. Such, for example, is the campaign of murder against Christians in the Sudan; the persecution and smaller-scale massacres in Nigeria (the "Jihad" against the Ibos and other Christians led to the declaration by the latter of their independence), with the Biafran War leading to a million Ibo deaths; and the jihad in Indonesia, where the war against the Christians first in East Timor -- illegally seized by Indonesia -- and then in the Moluccas and other islands continues wherever and whenever it can.

This is exactly what Arabs and Muslism, though they see the connections, do not wish the Infidels to see. They do not want us to read what is stated in Qur'an, Hadith, and Sira about Infidels and what is to be done, or what in fact was done, to them. They do not want you to read about the real (as opposed to the falsified) history of the treatment of all non-Muslims -- Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, Hindus, Buddhists, Confucians, under Muslim rule.

Western students of the origins of Islam have no difficulty showing that the belief-system is a mixture of pre-Islamic Arab pagan lore, with stories and figures appropriated, often in distorted fashion, from both Judaism and Christianity. It was the perfect vehicle for justifying Arab conquest and promoting further conquest: something that "looked familiar" to those who were richer and culturally more advanced but militarily less organized and powerful. Some of those could be convinced over time that this uncreated and eternal belief-system was the true version of their inferior, distorted religions (Judaism, Christianity). This view, combined with the steady pressure of the cruel status of the dhimmi, inevitably led over time to a falling-away from the dhimmis' original beliefs and their acceptance of Islam -- not by all, not even by most, but steadily, a little all the time. And when one combines the grim legal status of non-Muslims with the physical insecurity, the mass killings that could occur whenever a local Muslim population was whipped up (as with the massacre of all the Jews of Granada in 1066) and whenever it could be claimed that this or that non-Muslim was not complying with the rules that governed the "protected peoples," the entire non-Muslim community to which such an individual belonged could be made to pay the price.

When will a sufficient number of people in the Western world, in the press and television, and in governments, begin to fully grasp that Islam is not merely a religion but a geopolitical program for conquest?

Before you voted for Obama who wants to cut down the size of the military, even make them pay for there own medical care, didn't you realize the most of the Middle East will have Nuclear capability in 10 years or less ? We need a stronger Armed forces not a smaller one. China who claims they could have a 200 million man army if they want it. Bigger then all the NATO forces combined. North Korea and other hostile countries Nuclear ready ... At least Romney saw this grave threat. Obama ignores it.

i really think all this peace talk crap is a waste of time, any other President would have been blowin some countries up ready to protect Israel... but not ours, ours would rather go bow to the iraq leader and have tea or be flexible for Russia after the election... Does it even strike anyone at all that the bible says

                                        Jeremiah 4:16-17

                                        The Lord said,

“Tell the nations that my people
                                        have rebelled against me.
And so an army will come
                                        from far away
                                        to surround Jerusalem
                                        and the towns of Judah.
I, the Lord, have spoken. and then theres this one (

                                        Ezekiel 25:5-7

                                        Contemporary English Version (CEV)

5 Your capital city of Rabbah will be nothing but pastureland for camels, and the rest of the country will be pastures for sheep. Then you will know that I am the Lord God.

6 You hated Israel so much that you clapped and shouted and celebrated.7 And so I will hand you over to enemies who will rob you. I will completely destroy you. There won’t be enough of your people left to be a nation ever again, and you will know that I, the Lord, have done these things.

it also says that all nations and leaders will stand against israel, meaning the U.S that israel will be on their own, that will be when the end starts and Jesus returns, hope everyones ready, its fixing to get ugly.. would have been nice to have had a president that would start protecting GODS land, we have never not back israel full throttle no questions asked untill now and yet we cant figure put whats going on in our own country the fact that we've repeatedly sinned, removed GOD from everything and then we want to just make small talk around the country, while we go broke and prepare to lose more money over the next 4 years, while we lose more of our freedom because we are weak and sensitive about getting our feeling hurt if someone says the name JESUS so we have it removed well enjoy soon it will be Shira law and then you will be forced to worship something.. youll be calling on GOD then and he will not hear us, he will have turned his ears from our cries! get right it wont be long!!

Do Christians know that Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) will arrive in Syria from heaven? This development in Syria is very important to the Muslims as well as to the Jewish people whom Prophet Muhammad mentioned that the Jewish people know about Islam more than they know their own kids. When Prophet Jesus appear and only after the appearance of AntiChrist (Dajjal), The disbeliever will die upon smelling his pearllike sweats. There will be two groups on that day. One with Prophet Jesus will be Muslims and true Christians. The nontrue Christians will be ally with the Zionist. Al of these Arab springs that have been taken all over the Arab world is nothing but for the preparation of the great coming. See to it that you have been warned!
