DUBAI - Iran launched large-scale air defense drills in the country's eastern half on Monday, Iranian media reported, amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington over a military incident in the Gulf reported last week.
The "Velayat-4" maneuvers being held this week will span a massive stretch in Iran's northeast, east, and southeast regions - about half its total land mass. The area is not far from its borders with Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkmenistan, where there are large concentrations of U.S. troops.
The week-long maneuvers will include about 8,000 troops, drawn both from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its regular military, several media outlets said.
"Various kinds of fixed, mobile, and tactical long-range radars, and fixed, tactical and airborne electronic surveillance systems will participate in this exercise," said Farzad Esmaili, who heads Iran's air defense headquarters, according to state news agency IRNA.

The exercise will also test Iran's bombers, refueling planes, and unmanned aircraft, Esmaili said.
The Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) said on Monday that F-4, F-5, F-7, and F-14 fighters will participate in the exercise.
Missile and artillery systems will also be tested, Shahrokh Shahram, spokesman for the drills, told IRNA on Sunday, and the drills will focus on improving coordination between Iran's military and the Revolutionary Guards, a powerful domestic and international actor separate from the regular military.
Last week, the U.S. Pentagon said Iranian warplanes opened fire on an unarmed U.S. drone over international waters on November 1.
Iran said it had repelled an aircraft violating its airspace.
Iran fired on a U.S. drone during its classified surveillance mission on Nov. 1, but the Pentagon did not disclose the incident until Nov. 8 -- perhaps giving warning to Iran that the U.S. could respond militarily, and that Iran's nuclear program will be a high priority for President Obama. NBC's Richard Engel reports.
The incident underlined the risk of escalation in tensions between the United States and Iran in an ongoing dispute over Tehran's nuclear program.
Although the Iranian air drills come just days after the Pentagon's announcement, the exercises appear to have been planned well in advance. In September, Esmaili told ISNA that Iran was planning a large-scale air defense drill in the coming months.

On Sunday, Revolutionary Guards commander Amir Ali Hajizadeh said Iran believed the U.S. drone was gathering intelligence on oil tankers off its shores, according to the Mehr news agency.
Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander of the Guards, said his forces had acted well in repelling the drone.
"Iran's air defense systems and [Revolutionary Guard] fighter jets did their job and forced the aircraft out of Iran's skies," Jafari said on Sunday, according to Iran's English-language Press TV. "If such intrusions take place in the future, we will protect our airspace."
Washington, the EU and other bodies have imposed sanctions on Iran's oil trade to press it to halt nuclear research the West fears is aimed at developing the capability to build a nuclear bomb.
The Iranian economy is in free fall, with its currency, the rial hitting a record low. NBC's Ali Arouzi reports.

The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran, if diplomacy fails to resolve the row.
Iran denies the charge, saying its nuclear work is purely for peaceful purposes. Iranian officials have threatened to strike U.S. military bases in the region and target Israel if its nuclear sites are attacked.

Iran has carried out a number of military simulations this year, including the "Great Prophet 7" missile exercises in July.
In August, Iran announced that it had tested a short-range missile with a new guidance system capable of striking land and sea targets.

You have a point there. We have the F-22 Raptor. Hasn't really been tested to the extent that we want at this time but it's batting 1,000 so far. It's actually so fast on the turns and sophisticated that there are Pilots that refuse to fly it.
Our F-16 & F-16 are superior to there F-4/5/7/& 14's. If we do have an air war, we will have our hands full though. They have our left-over jets but, they're still deadly.
Funny thing is that they shot at our un-manned craft that couldn't even fight back and couldn't hit it. LOL. I mean, it was a sitting duckwithout any defensive maneuverability's man... If anything does happen, lets hope that was their "best" airman...

Most of the training exercise will be devoted to instructing pilots how not to hit populated areas when they fall out of the sky.

These "military exercises" are and have always been regular occurrences in Iran; I don't know why this is news now.

All these near misses provide an opportunity for Iran to see what doesn't work. I'm sure that information is being passed along to other, more technical groups who have the ways and means to address the failures. The drones are slow and stealthy. Their strength lies in those qualities. Those old aircraft are probably more than adequate platforms to dispense modern technology from. The drones are tricky, and it might be like trying to shoot a woodcock with a 22. I'm sure there is a serious effort to develop a shotgun type of weapon, or hand-grenade type, where just getting close will be good enough.
I don't want to see that happen, but there appears to be some groups out there that are dedicated to being our Nemesis.

I know that Iran possessing a nuclear weapon is probably not a good thing, however, who are the US and EU to say that they shouldn't? Actually, Iran was winning in 1982, and threatened to overwhelm Iraq's Army. The US was afraid of that scenario, so they...guess what? Intervened and helped Iraq with all kinds of tactical / intelligence support.
Even trained Iraqies in guess what? Guerilla Warfare and Insurgency, at Fort Bragg, i in case Iraq's Army had to go underground. The US even engaged the Iranians, sunk / damaged some warships, oil platforms, and ultimately shot down a civilian airliner, killing hundreds of Iranians. Iran decided to get onboard with ending the war, thinking the US would do anything.
The End-Game by the US & Soviets was to ensure NEITHER side won. Neither side won.

The '80's war between Iran and Iraq was a draw. We armed Iran, and STILL, neither side won. It looks like THAT came back to bite us in the a$$, eh? Much like how Regan armed the Afghan Taliban thugs during the Soviet occupation in the late '70's and '80's. Deja vu, all over again.
So just to put in context- F4s and F5s were used by US Forces in Vietnam. While the US sold off surplus in the late 70's and early 80's; only if the Iranians built support mfg could they sustain any protracted conflict. These jets were shot down by Russian SAM's guided by heat signature - so not a sophisicated system to balance the odds (and very low cost). The upper end model (F14) was a failed design replaced quickly by F15s then F16s. In direct conflict with U.S. or Israeli forces, these would not pose a serious issue outside "surprise" conflict.
But-against a minimally armed (i.e.-people with semi-automatics, etc) these are more than enough. They are on par with the conventional forces of Pakistan, Turkmenistan, etc.; and would be an over-whelming force against non-U.S. / Coalition forces in Afganistan. This is nothing more than sabre rattling as Iran's real enemy is themselves and the fact that they are on near economic collapse. Crazy is as crazy does - our role with Iran's neighbors should be nothing more than contain and monitor. The nuclear weapon threat is still an empty one and Amanutjob knows that which is why we don't take too much fear in his words, but still it's better to keep an eye on a presence than to ignore.

Those pilots did indeed shoot at the drone but the question is did they actually miss or was it just warning shots for the drone's camera to see? Never trust mainstream media to report all the facts.

BP started in Iran at the turn of the century and were being kicked out. Iran took back the goverment in 1979 and did not harm one American. Then we backed Saddam against Iran to again control oil. Iraq was going to sell oil in euros and the US was not going to allow that to happen so they took him out. Bush said oil would pay for the war but the only one that got oil was Israel and we built at taxpayers expense a 42" pipline from Iraq to Israel. It's no surprise to me that a country holds drills within its border. They have the right to do whatever the damn military thing they wanted to. As long as they are not doing it like Saddam using chemical weapons on its own people or commit any kind of war crime, there's nothing we can do about it.

Talking militarily, Iran's current drill only shows its military vulnerability to our war experts and planners as they openly display what they are capable of and their weaknesses. That way we know where to hit when the time come.
To me, there is never a good time to beat the drums of war. Even though the winner will win overwhelmingly, there will definitely be casualties on the part of the winner -- only God knows to what extend. That's the price/toll to pay. Worth it? You judge.
To me, again, a peaceful resolution of conflicts is the best rational way to go. Who wants to die even though he/she may want to make sacrifice to the beloved country int he first place? And by the way, the first rule in the battlefield when in combat is to "survive."
Taking the entire region from an aerial view, we don't want to be drawn into military conflict(s) given that all options are still on the table. Sanctions are working, all out sufferance in Iran is evident, it will only get worse over time. Nothing like a good world war during tough economic times to push the reset button and correctly balance out the worlds problems. Hell, it worked like a charm in the 1940's. About one hundred million casualties world wide after it was all said and done, then it was happy times are here again.
