NATO will defend alliance member Turkey, which struck back after mortar rounds fired from Syria landed inside its border, the alliance's Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said at a meeting in Prague on Monday.
"NATO as an organization will do what it takes to protect and defend Turkey, our ally. We have all plans in place to make sure that we can protect and defend Turkey and hopefully that way also deter so that attacks on Turkey will not take place," he said.
Rasmussen also welcomed a weekend agreement by Syrian opposition groups to put aside differences and form a new coalition.
In the 20 months since the revolt against President Bashar Assad began, one by one the sleepy Turkish towns and villages along the 550-mile frontier have watched helplessly as the Syrian war edges closer.
Israel fires into Syria for second day, scores 'direct hits'
The proximity is no more obvious than in Ceylanpinar, where what was a single town under the Ottoman empire was split after World War I, with part remaining in the new Turkish republic and part coming under French rule in what would become Syria.
Ras al-Ain, as the town on the Syrian side of the frontier is known, was overrun on Thursday by anti-Assad rebels advancing into Syria's northeast, home to many ethnic Kurds. Fighting has sent thousands of refugees fleeing for safety in Turkey.
No sooner had the rebels raised their flag over Ras al-Ain after a fierce battle, however, than Syrian government tanks and artillery began firing back into the town in what has become an all-too-familiar pattern of the civil war.
Assad's forces unleashed their air power on Monday. A warplane screeched along the frontier and bombs fell close to the border fence, sending scores more Syrians scrambling over into Turkey. Helicopters strafed targets for a second day.
Turkey does not want to become embroiled in a regional war, but risks being drawn in by domestic pressures. As frustration grows among leaders in Ankara at world powers' failure to stop the bloodshed, so too are Turkey's citizens becoming impatient with their own government's inability to keep them safe.
Walls 'riddled with bullet holes'
Flat-roofed Syrian and Turkish houses abut the barbed-wire fence that divides the two modern towns, whose combined population is 80,000 and between which Arabs and Kurds have long maintained family and social bonds.
Though crossing the frontier has often been limited by official restrictions, friends and relatives exchange greetings through the wire as though chatting over a backyard fence.
Loitering near the wire is now a risky pastime, however. Kayakiran's uncle, Mehmet Ali, recalled how close the war came when, after rebels took Ras al-Ain last week, he stepped outside his home in Ceylanpinar to phone a friend over the border.

"I wanted to see if he was alive," he said.
"I was just putting the phone to my ear when the bullet hit right here," he said, pointing to a street sign nailed to the wall of his house.
The stray bullet, fired from across the fence, left a small dent in the metal panel inches from where his head had been.
"That's nothing," said a neighbor joining the conversation. "My wall is riddled with bullet holes."
Others have been less fortunate; two people in Ceylanpinar were wounded last week by stray bullets fired from Syria, including a teenage boy who was shot in the chest.
Around 60 miles west along the border, in the Turkish town of Akcakale, five civilians were killed last month when a mortar fired from Syria struck their home.
It was the most serious cross-border incident since the fighting began, spurring Turkish calls for more robust action from world powers, including the possible deployment by NATO of Patriot surface-to-air missiles on the Turkey-Syria border.
Turkey says it has fired back in retaliation, but its calls for a buffer zone to be set up inside Syria have so far failed to gain traction among reluctant Western powers.
As in Akcakale, many of those in Ceylanpinar living near the fence have abandoned their homes for the time being. The neighborhood resembles a ghost town, where Turkish soldiers in trenches train their guns on Syria.
Turkish police trucks armed with water cannons, typically used in the past to suppress the restive ethnic Kurdish population of southeastern Turkey, including Ceylanpinar, now patrol the Syrian border.
Police warn children not to play near the fence. Schools have been closed since last week, and over loudspeakers on Monday authorities urged people to stay indoors.
"We've locked our doors and left," said Huseyin Albayrak, a neighbor living a few doors down from Kayakiran. "I've sent my wife and kids to my father further inside the town.
"Turkey needs to do something to protect its people."
NATO solidarity
According to Al Jazeera, Rasmussen told reporters in Prague on Monday that NATO will stand by Turkey and consider requests for a possible deployment of anti-aircraft missiles.
"Turkey can rely on NATO solidarity, we have more plans in place to defend and protect Turkey, our ally, if needed," Rasmussen said, according to Al Jazeera.
The NATO secretary-general added that the military alliance had not received a request from Turkey to deploy U.S.-made Patriot anti-aircraft missiles.
"But obviously if such a request is to be forwarded, the NATO council will have to consider it," Rasmussen added, according to Al Jazeera.

The Muslim Brotherhood with outside help will take Syria (the head of the MB appears to be the leader of the Syrian rebel movement now) and the MB head of Egypt has already proclaimed that the peace deal with Israel must be changed allowing troops/heavy arms into the Sinai. They've also openly stated that they seek the destruction of Israel and consider it their godly duty to do such. Iran is now playing multiple sides to promote a more extreme middle east and moving to more heavily arm Hamas & Hezbollah.
We're getting ready to defend Turkey whose government is fast leaning toward more of a Theocracy so a ton of US armaments will be stationed from Turkey to Afghanistan. Pakistan is sitting on nukes and the ISI there is about as radical as it gets. Iraq is now buddies with Iran and allowing Iranian arms to move freely across the country. Do we really think that these countries view us as allies? Once the ball drops all of these warring factions will join together and we will be the odd man out. Europe will stay out because they won't want trouble with Russia and China won't care, but it has already stated that it's loans to the US are drying up. England has already expressed a total lack of will for another war.
So that leaves the US sending troops in to defend Israel against a heavily armed (by the US) force. The challenge becomes stopping the rapidly advancing armies, as with the arms they can overrun Israel by shear volume of force. If anyone thinks that a major war is not far off they need to read some history books as we are balanced on the edge of the knife.
The US and the rest of NATO needs to stay out of this and let Turkey fend for themselves. They have become a willing participant in this conflict by allowing the Syrian "rebels" to base themselves in Turkey and launch strikes against Assad's forces from those bases in Turkey. For Turkey to be able to claim they are the injured party they need to stop supporting the "rebels." By supporting the "rebels," Turkey has effectively become an aggressor against Syria and does not deserve protection under article 4 of the NATO treaty. Until that put a stop to the "rebels" using Turkey as a base of operations NATO should tell them to pound sand when they request NATO help. You can not be an aggressor and openly support one side in a conflict and then try and ask for help under a mutual defense pact that only calls for that assistance to be provided if you are attacked without provocation.
Turkey is a member of NATO, as is the United States. An attack on any NATO member nation, including Turkey, is considered an attack on all. The United States and all NATO member nations are treaty-bound to come to Turkey's defense if it is attacked.

If Syria attacks Turkey from behind, will Greece help?
Turkey needs no help in their defense from Syria; Syria is not so stupid as to try anything against Turkey; Turkey has one of the best Trained and equipped Army's in the world, all professional soldiers, tough as nails and hell on wheels as fighters; talk to any Korean war vet, they fought along side of Turkish troops in Korea, even the Marines(best in the world), were impressed, and it takes a heck of a lot to impress a Marine!
After many months of war, Syria's degraded military is in no shape to go to war with neighboring Turkey, or for that matter, anyone else. However, the NATO clowns are chomping at the bit to enter the fray implying that Turkey would somehow need help in defending itself.
Now, they're waiting for something that could be considered as an excuse to go to war and bomb the crap out of Damascus.
Seems NATO found a way in after all under the disguise of protecting another neighboring country. Smooth, now they can send in their drones from Turkey and bring down Syria's leader and fall back on protecting Turkey. Whatever makes you sleep better at night I guess. Either way, Syria's leader needs to be removed. The people have spoken.
I think NATO, led by France, is preparing to attack Syria.
Turkey is harboring Syrian Islamists (Turkey's new government of Erdogan is Islamist), therefore causing shootings across their border, since Syria is against the ropes (Israel just lunched retaliation attacks based on the same crap) it would be easy to orchestrate an "incident" were Turkey is forced to respond disproportionate and a war would start involving NATO, this could cause a real big problem if Russia, Iran and China would come together to help Syria.
NATO should be busting it off in Syria already. Turkey has been attacked and as a NATO member, NATO should come to the aid of an ally.
When Turkey joined the US in the Korean War, the North Koreans feared Turkish troops more than any other allied force. If there is a conflict in the Middle East, you want Turkey on your side.
motz- you're not kidding about that either. one guy i worked with was on the front lines in korea and he was fighting along side the turks during chinese human wave attacks. he said when the turks ran out of ammo, without batting an eyelash they just pulled their broadswords and started hacking the chinese to pieces. they even took the time to wipe their swords after each kill, would not attack another enemy soldier without wiping the blood off thier sword first. that takes balls of chrome plated steel when there are 10,000 chinese running up the hill at you. i wouldnt want to fight them either.

If you never fought and barely survived in this region (Iran Iraq Wars, later on Operation Viking Hammer), you don't know squat about the terrain, the people (languages, cultures, etc.) just to survive.
This is NOT the First time that I had been involved with this region, First was the US Military Training Teams to US Ally Iraq during the Iran Iraq Wars, when the Fundamentalist Islamic Kurdistanis were the Armed (men, women, children) Ally of the Fundamentalsit Islamic Shia Republic of Iran. As Turkey is a NATO, why are they not helping in Afghanistan?

We won't be staying out of this one if NATO gets involved. Since we pretty much are NATO. If it escalates much further this conflict could expand to several middle east nations. That could ramp up the timetable with Iran, make Israel even more nervous and get Russia involved.

Right you are, Mitchell. We are treaty-bound to come to the Turks' defense. They are unquestionably our most important ally in the region, and - contrary to many Islamophobic posters' opinions - a secular, modern state.
It's about time!! How many times does it take for the members of NATO to watch the same news I watch everyday, and see and know the killings of men, women and especially the children, who have nothing to do with Assads total collapse of mentality, before something or somebody FINALLY decided enough is enough of the daily bloodshed of the innocents. In my reality though, I hope Assads not killed by a missile or something through his palace, I hope he gets it just like Qaddafi did....slowly, and looking into the eyes of the people he screwed over for his own "glory". I also hope Syria doesn't come to hate the US for not having any balls to have helped sooner, or to have easily gotten NATO involved soon

The Turks should invade Syria to topple Assad. They mounted a successful amphibious assault on Cyprus in the 60's, so they are easily capable of a land incursion across their border into Syria. Alternatively, if the Western powers would declare and enforce a no fly zone throughout Syria, that would neutralize Assad's air power (as part of that, air defenses and armored forces could also be hit to protect the planes enforcing the no-fly zone). In this way the scenario would follow the action by the West in Libya to topple Kadaffi. Assad is a terrorist and gangster, and more importantly for the US, an ally of Iran. The US should do all we can to knock him out.
