Israel kills Hamas military chief, 7 others in airstrike, officials say

Israeli leaders indicate that a new offensive against Islamic militant commanders is underway. NBC's Martin Fletcher reports.

Updated at 10:46 p.m. ET: TEL AVIV -- The head of the militant wing of the Palestinian Hamas movement and seven others were killed as Israel launched a series of airstrikes in Gaza Wednesday, officials said.

Hamas spokesman Fauazy Brehom told NBC News that Ahmed Jabari was killed in the attack by Israeli forces. Jabari was the most senior commander of Hamas' military wing, the Ezzidine Al-Qassam Brigades.

A statement from the Al-Qassam Brigades said that Israel had “opened the gates of hell.”

President Barack Obama spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Wednesday, urging him to avoid civilian casualties. The president reiterated the United States' support for Israel's right to self-defense following rocket attacks launched from Gaza.

Obama also spoke Wednesday with Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi because of the country's central role in preserving regional security. Obama condemned the rocket fire from Gaza into Israel and reiterated Israel's right to self-defense. The two leaders agreed on the importance of working to deescalate the situation quickly and they agreed to stay in touch in coming days.

In a frequently updated live blog chronicling the attacks, the Israel Defense Forces claimed it had targeted "dozens" of Hamas’ medium-range underground rocket launch sites and other weapons storage facilities. The report said Israel had also intercepted 17 rockets fired from Gaza.

"If I were a senior Hamas activist - I would look for a place to hide," IDF spokesman Brgi. Gen. Yoav (Poly) Moredechai said in a statement published online.

Moredechai said the possibility of a ground invasion would not be ruled out, and emphasized that all options remain on the table. "Infantry brigades have been shifted in preparation for the operation," his statement read. "All options that allow us to cause seriously damage to Hamas and the other terrorist organizations are on the table."

A statement from the Israeli embassy blamed Hamas for launching 150 rockets at Israel's south over the past week.

Smoke rises after Israeli air strikes in the northern Gaza Strip on Nov. 14. Israel launched a major offensive against Palestinian militants in Gaza on Wednesday, killing the military commander of Hamas in an air strike and threatening an invasion of the enclave that the Islamist group vowed would "open the gates of hell."

"Israel has the right and duty to defend itself from terrorist attacks designed to kill thousands of its citizens," Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren said. "We are sending an unequivocal message that our citizens will not be hostage to terrorist missile fire and cross-border attacks. The scope of the IDF's defensive operation depends on Hamas and whether it takes the decision to cease firing missiles on our neighborhoods and homes."

Jabari is the most senior Hamas official to have died due to Israeli military action since the killing of Saeed Seyam four years ago.

Sources at the Kamal Adwan and Al-Shifa hospitals said a total of eight people had been killed and 80 injured.

A statement on the IDF website said that Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz had “approved an expansive strike against terrorist organizations in Gaza.”

Emergency services extinguish the burned out destroyed car of Qassam top leader Ahmed Jabari after an Israeli air strike in Gaza City on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012.

“As a part of the program, a short while ago, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) struck Ahmed al-Jabari and other senior officers of Hamas' Military Wing, who were involved in planning and implementing dozens of attacks, including the kidnapping of SFC [Israeli soldier] Gilad Shalit,” it said.

The airstrike took place in central Gaza, according to the statement, which was headlined "Chief of Hamas' Military Wing Ahmed al-Jabari assassinated." The headline was later changed to "Senior Hamas operative targeted," and the statement dropped the reference to Shalit.

The statement quoted IDF spokesman Mordechai as saying military action began following the "intolerable situation in the south of the country, and seeks to harm terrorist organizations operating in the Gaza Strip."

'Forward base for Iran'
The IDF later announced it had begun "Operation Pillar of Defense." Israel confirmed there had been several airstrikes.

In another update, the statement said the IDF had "targeted a significant number of long range rockets sites ... owned by Hamas. This deals a significant blow to the terror organizations' underground rocket launching capabilities and munitions warehouses that are owned by Hamas and other terror organizations."

"The Gaza strip, has turned it into a forward base for Iran, firing rockets and carrying out terrorist attacks against Israeli citizens. The IDF will continue to target terrorist sites that are used to carry out terror attacks against Israeli citizens," it said.

"The IDF will continue to target sites that are used for carrying out terror attacks against the citizens of Israel while improving their daily security," it added.

An IDF statement Monday said more than 120 rockets fired from Gaza had hit Israel since Saturday and that the Israeli air force had responded with airstrikes on a number of sites.

Jabari had survived numerous assassination attempts in the past and had served close to a decade in an Israeli jail, according to NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin.

He was widely considered the second most important figure within Hamas' overall structure after Khaled Mishaal, the head of the organization’s political bureau.

Jabari was instrumental in negotiations about the release of Shalit, Mohyeldin said. Jabari was rarely seen in public and even more seldom filmed but he was seen accompanying Shalit to the border crossing with Egypt ahead of his handover.

US reacts; Israeli ambassador leaves Egypt
U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the United States "strongly" condemns the rocket fire from Gaza into southern Israel.

"There is no justification for the violence that Hamas and other terrorist organizations are employing against the people of Israel," Toner's statement read. "We call on those responsible to stop these cowardly acts immediately. We support Israel's right to defend itself, and we encourage Israel to continue to take every effort to avoid civilian casualties."

Egypt's foreign minister called Israel's airstrikes on Gaza a dangerous escalation at a critical time for the region, and called on the Israeli government to quickly halt the offensive.

Egypt's ruling Freedom and Justice Party condemned the killing of Jabari, and said Israel was using the military operation as a card in its own political game, ahead of elections in January. The party called on the international community and Arab states to act immediately to stop the massacre against the Palestinian people, adding that Israel's attacks were meant to create instability in the region.

Airport sources in Egypt confirmed to NBC News that the Israeli ambassador and other Israelis were leaving Cairo Wednesday night.

The U.N. chief also called on Israel and Palestinian Hamas militants to prevent an escalation of hostilities, urging both sides to ensure civilians will be protected, a U.N. spokesman said Wednesday.

"The Secretary-General calls for an immediate de-escalation of tensions," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said, adding that it was a reiteration of Ban's already-stated position.

"Both sides should do everything to avoid further escalation and they must respect their obligations under international humanitarian law to ensure the protection of civilians at all times," he told reporters.

Israel's brutal occupation of Gaza failed; Israel's brutal invasion of Gaza failed; Israel's brutal blockade of Gaza failed; and Israel's brutal assassination and terror campaign against Gaza will fail, as will another brutal invasion. The blood of martyrs is the lifeblood of the resistance, which is stronger now than ever. As the Nazism of our times, Zionism has no future for as someone from the Holy Land once prophetically said: those who live by the sword shall die by the sword.

Israel did not brutally do squat.

    Israel only wants peace.

BUT they know how to fight a war.

If someone picks a fight with you, and they lose, you take everything.

America should relearn the real meaning of war from Israel.

AND Israel has NEVER stated a war with the exception of the pre-emptive strikes

    during the 1967 war.

    And, even THAT was justified.

I'm kind of in shock at how some are defending terrorist groups...

Either they're not old enough to understand anything, or they're terrorist members themselves trying to convince the general public of their "worthy" cause...

Something is happening in the middle east, the likes of which we haven't seen before. Leaders are being toppled and replaced with murdering thugs (worse then the one's before them) and terrorist groups are getting money and weapons from us.

Its almost like USA, China, and Russia use the middle east as kind of like a board game.

Peace will never be had out there. Of that we are all sure.

Gee! Even ignoring the ethical aspects, it looks to me like it might just be a bad idea to launch a lot of missiles at other people. They may decide to defend themselves and/or retaliate.

Seriously, I haven't read all the posts (I have a job), but nobody seems to have pointed out that the West Bank, which has not attacked Israel, has not been attacked by Israel. It is difficult, but the Fatah faction seems to be working toward a negotiated peace. Hamas, on the other hand continues to wage war, and have war waged upon them. Perhaps there is a lesson in there for all the hate-filled people posting here.

          Freedom4Everyone, What land is that?

The term "Palestine" came from the name that the conquering Roman Empire gave the ancient Land of Israel in an attempt to obliterate and de-legitimize the Jewish presence in the Holy Land. The name "Palestine" was invented in the year 135 C.E. Before it was known as Judea, which was the southern kingdom of ancient Israel. The Roman Procurator in charge of the Judean-Israel territories was so angry at the Jews for revolting that he called for his historians and asked them who were the worst enemies of the Jews in their past history. The scribes said, "the Philistines." Thus, the Procurator declared that Land of Israel would from then forward be called "Philistia" [further bastardized into "Palaistina"] to dishonor the Jews and obliterate their history. Hence the name "Palestine."

One more thing. Very often one hears the revisionists and propagandists finding ancient historical links between the "Philistines" ("Invaders" in Hebrew) and the Arab "Palestinians." There is no truth to this claim! The Philistines were one of a number of Sea Peoples who reached the eastern Mediterranean region approximately 1250-1100 B.C.E. They were actually an amalgamation of various ethnic groups, primarily of Aegean and south-east European origin [Greece, Crete and Western Turkey] and they died out over 2500 years ago! Those Philistines were not Arab... and neither was Goliath! The Arabs of "Palestine" are just that... Arabs! And these Arabs of "Palestine" have about as much historical roots to the ancient Philistines as Yasser Arafat has to the Eskimos!

The ancient, indigenous inhabitants of Palestine are long perished from the earth. Canaanites, Phoencians, and then Philistines, all were dominated by the Israelites before 1060 B.C.E. Most of these cultural identities dissolved completely by the neo-Babylonian age, or, the 6th century B.C.E. Arabs weren’t even in Palestine until the mid-7th century C.E., over a thousand years later, afterPalestine’s 1,300-year Jewish history. Arabs later living in Palestine never developed themselves or the land, but remained nomadic and quasi-primitive

Even the word "Palestine" has no meaning in Arabic - every word in Arabic has some meaning deriving from the Koran, but the word "Palestine" does not. If anything, the name "Palestine" was associated with Jews. In the years leading up to the rebirth of Israel in 1948, those who spoke of "Palestinians" were nearly always referring to the region's Jewish residents. For example, the "Palestine Post" [forerunner of today's Jerusalem Post] newspaper and the Palestine Symphony Orchestra were all-Jewish. The "Palestine Brigade Regiment" was composed exclusively of Jewish volunteers in the British World War II Army. In fact, Arab leaders rejected the notion of a unique "Palestinian Arab" identity, insisting that Palestine was merely a part of "Greater Syria."

Jews have been a problem in every region they've ever occupied. Given

the christian right and the absymal ignorance of the non-Jewish population

in the U S, the illegal and criminal occupation of Palestine not to mention

Isreal's continued violaion of internationa law as a agressor-occupant of

M E territories, Isreal will only continue to provoke more hostilities that eventually

lead to Isreal's destruction. Its really an old story for the Jews as they've

managed to not only alienate host countries in which they lived but with a closer

look at the Hitler era, many counties refused Jews entry simply because they

were Jewish. The mythical roots of the modern state of Isreal are the real

rasion d etre for its existence.Without its proximity to oil and the enfluence

of its lobbying organization with our Congressmen, there would be no support

for Isreal and very likely, no Isreal. As an afterthought in view of the many

reader comments on the murder of Palestinans by the mighty IDF, that

following the U S - Iraq affair when Isreal was threatened with Iraqi

missles, the exodus of Jews out of Isreal spoke volumes about thier

                courage and love of country.

John Hanson, I can tell you don't know anything about the relationship of the USA and Israel but I can also tell your not an American. What exodus of Jews out of Israel? Jewish people our going to Israel, it is the beacon of Democracy in the middle east. If you want Palestinians shooting rockets at you, then I think you should give them refuge in your country so they can thank you for the hospitality. The problem is not the Jewish people, the problem is the Arabs, they managed to alienate their host countries, look at Jordan, Lebanon, Syria.

We all know that the only exocus of Jews are out of Arab countries. The reason why is because they are Jewish. Sir, reading your comment I would have to say that you are an Arab bigot. Am I wrong?

If all these hawks lived in Gaza, I keep wondering if they would just lay down and die because Israel prefers to keep them in the world's largest concentration camp. Israel is America's only partner in the region because America acts consistently to support Israel's aggression. You can support the Jewish people without supporting the State of Israel. Read the book. It seems that Hamas actually admitted two things we probably already knew. 1. They claim that ONLY THREE of the Palestinians killed were civilians -- the rest being terrorists, and 2. They have 'opened the gates of hell' and, of course, Hamas is crawling out.

This always seems to be a case of 'they hit me back first'. The Palestinians are the most hateful, racist, unforgiving people in the Middle East.

A quote from "jewish" terrorist (leader of the irgun), and former "israeli" Prime Minister M. Begin,

"Our race is the master race. We are divine gods on this planet. We are as different from the inferior races as they are from insects. In fact, compared to our race, other races are beasts and animals, cattle at best. Other races are considered as human excrement. Our destiney is to rule over the inferior races. Our earthly kingdom will be ruled by our leader with a rod of iron. The masses will lick our feet and serve us as slaves"!

This is the same TERRORIST responcible for the bombing of the King David Hotel, and the hanging of two British troops who's bodies were then booby trapped, among MANY more TERRORIST activities throughout the 1940's!

Another para quote from this "jewish" TERRORIST, we "jews are responcible for bring terrorism not only to the Middle east, but to the world!

Oh, please, you're the only one stupid enough to think that anyone will believe that bullsh!t.

If you're going to make up something that retarded, at least try to make it sound a little more intelligent, like it actually came from a diplomat and not a garbage collector.

You're not fooling anyone, Achmed. How many goats did your family back in the desert get for you writing that? Ore are they being paid in camels?

Is that the best SHILLING you can do? Prove it's wrong! The last SHILL/"israeli firster" couldn't because it found out it's real! The only thing wrong about these are the typo's!

And I don't need to TRY and fool anyone, your cult/tribes own words say it all! That's what happens when a cult's ego overides a clear/stable mind!

Here's another quote for you from a very high "israeli" Rabbi in 2010, Rabbi Yosef, "Goyim (cattle or ALL non "jews") are born only to serve us...."

Proving they did say something, however, is not only possible, it's the only thing that can keep you from sounding like a lying piece of sh!t right now, so let's see YOUR proof.

This is a fabricated quote. It was originally a misrepresentation of a quote from a speech Begin gave to the Knesset in 1982 as reported by a French journalist named Kapeliouk. It has been linked to Texe Marrs who is basically an idiot. As far any research I can find on the subject, this is a fake.

The "jewish" PRIVATELY owned/run Federal Reserve that ILLEGALLY charges usury (interest) to loan us our own money! Not their money, but our own money they ILLEGALLY print out of thin air!

Then we also have the "jewish" run Wallstreet that we all know has stolen TRILLIONS of US Taxpayer dollars! Not to mention received bailouts!

Then we have the "jewish" monopolized US Media that spreads propaganda/lies every single day!

WOW, your CULT/tribe has a loooooonnnnnnggggggg history of doing this exact same thing to many other countires! No wonder why your CULT/tribe has been LEGITIMATELY kicked out of so many! DUH!

It is your quote, you prove it true. Shouldn't be too difficult considering you found it somewhere on the internet. How about you give us the link you used to find it? The way it works is somebody makes a statement and presents it as fact. Somebody asks for information concerning the statement. The person claiming the statement is indeed factual provides proof of such. Without that proof, well, it just means the poster is 1) a liar, 2) lazy or 3) an instigator. Which one are you?

Let me save you some trouble. It has been attributed to Jimmy Carters Memoirs and it isn't there. It has been attributed to a speech, but no record of it exists. General consensus is that Texe Marrs made it up. It's okay, I've done it myself in the past. It is easy to do. I only suggest you let this one go. There are enough examples of Jewish leaders speaking their minds (so to speak) which can be verified that using this fake quote is not necessary. But we must remember one man or Rabbi's yelling is not always representative of an entire population.
