Israelis, Palestinians tense as violence escalates along Gaza border

More than 200 missiles were fired at Israel Thursday; Israel, in turn, launched about 200 missiles against Palestinian targets. NBC's Martin Fletcher reports.

Updated 12:55 a.m. ET:  Israeli troops were moving toward the Gaza Strip border, heightening Palestinian fears about a possible ground invasion, NBC News' Martin Fletcher reported late Thursday.

Some 30,000 reservists were also ordered to report for duty by the Israel's defense minister as the region's military showdown lurched closer to all-out war.

"There is a great sense of anxiety and tension in the air here," NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reported from Tel Aviv. "People are very much worried about the ongoing operation. There's no doubt from the perspective of the Palestinians this could possibly escalate even further."

There will be momentary peace, however, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said military would stop offensive action in Gaza during a three-hour Friday visit by Hesham Kandil, Egypt's prime minister. An Israeli official said Netanyahu was acting on an Egyptian request, Reuters reported.

Kandil's visit would be an unprecedented display of solidarity with Hamas militants embroiled in a new escalation of conflict with Israel.

In another sign of the growing fear of danger in Gaza, many humanitarian aid workers have evacuated, NBC News reported.

In the latest air strikes, three people were killed when a missile hit their car in the northern Gaza Strip. The Israeli military also said it had carried out aerial attacks and had destroyed 70 unmanned missile launch sites. Eighteen Palestinians have been killed and 100 injured in Gaza since Wednesday, Reuters reported.

In Gaza, fear of a ground invasion has sent shock waves through the region. Coming days could prove dangerous. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin has more.

Earlier, three Israeli civilians were killed and six injured on Thursday as rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel, including a long-range missile that struck a suburb eight miles south of Tel Aviv.

The long-range missile, which landed in an open area outside Rishon Lezion, causing no injuries or damage, was thought to be the first of its kind launched from Gaza. Air raid sirens were later sounded in Tel Aviv, at about 6.30 p.m. local time (11:30 a.m. ET), NBC News reported.

The Tel Aviv metropolitan area has more than 3 million people, more than 40 percent of Israel's population.

"This escalation will exact a price that the other side will have to pay," Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in a television broadcast shortly after the strike.

Israel's ambassador to the U.S., Michael Oren, did not rule out a ground operation in Gaza in an interview with NBC's Andrea Mitchell on Thursday.

"Nobody wants a ground operation, and we are going to try to avoid that," Oren said, "But, again, we're going to have to take all necessary means to defend our citizens against this flagrant aggression. "

The funeral was held Thursday for Ahmed Jabari, the senior Hamas military commander, who was one of those killed in the Israeli Defense Force airstrikes.

The IDF said on its website that the three people killed were civilians in the southern Israeli town of Kiryat Malachi.

It added that 43 of the rockets from Gaza had been intercepted by its defense systems, and that it had targeted 156 "terror sites" in Gaza since the start of what it called "Operation Pillar of Defense."

"In the past 24 hours, 245 rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel," it said.

Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal on Thursday condemned the killing of Jabari.

"Men and women in Palestine, we will continue the resistance," Meshaal said at a meeting of Islamic leaders in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting late on Wednesday to discuss the Israeli assault. It called for a halt to the violence, but took no action.

Analysis: Israel, Gaza slide closer to war neither side wants

The Palestinian Authority renewed its call Thursday for the Security Council to stop attacks. (Hamas controls Gaza, not the Palestinian Authority.)

Egypt officially requested on Thursday a full meeting of the Security Council to discuss what it described as Israeli aggression, and withdrew its ambassador from Israel.

Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi said in a televised address to the nation Thursday that Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip were "unacceptable" and would lead to instability in the region.

Morsi said he had discussed "ways to reach calm and end the aggression" in a telephone conversation with U.S. President Barack Obama.

Hamas is affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood which now controls Egypt, Israel's most powerful Arab neighbor and a crucial partner in the 1979 peace treaty that stands between fragile stability and regional chaos. The Muslim Brotherhood on Thursday called for all ties with Israel to be severed.

Hamas has been emboldened by the Islamist rise to power in Egypt, viewing Morsi as a "safety net" who will not permit a second Israeli thrashing of Gaza, home to 1.7 million Palestinians.

Expecting days or more of fighting, Israel warned Hamas that all its men were in its sights and dropped leaflets in Gaza telling residents to keep their distance from militants and Hamas facilities.

"The leaflets stress that Hamas is dragging the region toward violence, and that the IDF is prepared to defend the residents of the State of Israel until quiet is restored to the region," the military said in a statement.

Israel also warned its own citizens to stay off the streets.

Israel kills Hamas military chief, 7 others in airstrike, officials say

The United States condemned Hamas, shunned by the West as an obstacle to peace, for its refusal to renounce violence and recognize Israel.

The U.S. State Department on Thursday called for a de-escalation of the violence in the Middle East and placed the onus for that violence squarely on Hamas.

"There's one clear way to mitigate the tensions,” spokesperson Mark Toner said. “That is for Hamas to stop its rocket attacks on Israel so we can de-escalate the situation and end the violence. That's the clearest path."

Israel says it has already destroyed much of Gaza's longer-range rocket stockpiles. Reuters reported that Hamas had claimed it had fired a 1.1 ton, Iranian-made Fajr 5 rocket at Tel Aviv, but there was no reported impact in the Israeli city.

Few in the Palestinian territory's largest urban area, Gaza City, came out following the call for dawn prayers on Thursday, and the only vehicles plying the streets were ambulances and media cars.

About 400 angry mourners braved the streets, however, to bury Jabari, whose body was draped in the green flag of the Islamic militant Hamas movement. Some fired guns in the air and chanted, "God is Great, the revenge is coming."

When the body was brought into a mosque for funeral prayers, some tried to touch or kiss it. Others cried. BBC producer Paul Danahar posted pictures of the scene outside the mosque on Twitter.

President Barack Obama also spoke to Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as well as Morsi on the telephone late Wednesday.

A White House spokesman said Obama reiterated to both leaders the United States' support for Israel's right to self-defense, and agreed with Morsi on the importance of working to de-escalate the situation.

and I still wonder who our president would help or support. he is too in touch with his brotherhood to really be a friend to israel

He has already forgiven 1 billion dollars in debt as well as given an aid package of 2 billion to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. He did this in May of 2011 so we know where his loyalties are. I am just wondering why this attack that killed the top Hamas leader is different from our killing of Osama Bin Laden? They(Israel) saw an opportunity to kill one of the main leaders in support of their genocide and the world cries out for Israel to stop defending itself. I just don't get it.

This is what is all about - the murderous pedophile ayatolahs of the Iranian theocratic regime are testing their weapons. There is a good reason for Israel to hit these filthy rapist mullahs and clean up the act in Iran first. Hamas attacks on Israel will stop.

Would you care to elaborate on what you know about the Iranian Ayatollah?

Or are we just mouthing off without knowing what we're talking about?

I'm sure you are also very well read on the what happened in 1979 or about the 1953 Western-lead coup against the only popularly and democratically elected Iranian Prime Minister Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh.

Let's also hear what you have to say about the Western-backed Peacock munching Shahs.

I have been reading your rants. You have no clue. I am an Iranian, born, raised and educated in Tehran. Lived under the mullahs regime for three years and had two of my family members murdered by them. Don't you start with me. I can smell stupid radical muslims from a mile away, hiding behind a keyboard or not.

Okay, mister "Iranian," what are your thoughts on Mossadegh or the Shahs?

What was it like to live under the Shahs?

Yes, I know Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's regime is very repressive. I realize that after 1979, the Iranian economy went utterly nuts with fanatical Islam and threw their economy out the window.

I know the elite Quods forces are pretty Nazi-like, and that their style of "Law & Order" is very brutal. Not that this is much different from what most "modern" countries are resorting to these days.

It's regretful that your family members supposedly died - but I'm not going to sit here and graitfy you with online anonymous stories about how anonymous family members were killed by anonymous people.

By the way, I'm a Jew that survived the Holocaust and my parents are both one-legged Kenyans. You should pity me and listen to what I have to say.

If fk and moped would settle down a little I see some eye-witness accounts that could be very informative. Just for credibility, skip the vulgarity. I really do await this discussion.

Anonymous online "witness accounts" on comment sections are not actually very credible stories. I'd be be very careful if I were you.

By the way, I am now an Army Ranger that lost both his arms in Iraq and I am typing to you with prosthetic arms now. No offense - but I hope I'm demonstrating something.

                Moped,

Does it do us an good to talk about 1953 as many people living in the country today were not around then plus they overthrew that government in 79 as you wrote. In 79 the takeover of our embassy happened after the overthrow and because we did not return the Shah to Iran.

I and everyone thank you for your sacrifice. But I would rather take the chance for good exchange from "credible" or not credible sources than reinforce more hate.

                  #111.9 - Thu Nov 15, 2012 5:12 PM EST

Actually, it does a -lot- of good to talk about 1953 because it provides a historical Context, and therefore, MOTIVE as to why people behave the way they do.

History is not this think you can just "brush" under the rug, as much as Stalin and Hitler wanted to achieve those methodologies.

Again, I hate neither Jews or Arabs. I see the strengths of both. I also acknowledge their dark points. I am advocating a peaceful option or some sort of negotiation because frankly, this "little conflict" is probably going to swallow the entire world with how every single nation is intimately linked to one another.

Sort of like the chain-reaction that took place after World War I. ...

I agree with you but how far back do you want to go and what good does it do to go back. If you want an example look at South Africa. When Nelson Mandela became President he told the blacks that past happened and we have to start building a country from now. He also could have been President for life but stepped down after one term so the people can learn how a democracy works.

It is my feeling that when the Palestinians work at moving forward and forget about the past, then and only then will progress be made.

Progress for the Palestinians involves gaining UN recognition so that they have some sort of international voice, rights, and protections, though, Jerry.

And that process has been repeatedly undermined. For what reasons - that's really up to debate but it's a real issue.

                      #111.12 - Thu Nov 15, 2012 5:53 PM EST

Because the terms put to Hamas is for them to accept Israel as a country and to denounce violence. They have refused to do either one, so that is why they do not have UN recognition.

If you want to go back in history please remember that when Jordan and Egypt controlled the West Bank and Gaza from 1948 - 1968 the Palestinians never requested their own country. Palestinians were thrown out of Jordan after trying to overthrow the King and 10,000 were killed in one day, Syria also expelled them to Lebanon so their own brothers do not want them.

I would also suggest that you see how they are treated in Lebanon where they receive no education, no medical care, no path to citizenship, no housing and ask why is the world silent on that. The Palestinians in Lebanon receive much more aid from the UN than they receive in Gaza yet it is never mentioned.

Given the above the logical conclusion is the problem is not a Palestinian state but the existence of a Jewish state.

Thank you for your post and as somebody who has traveled the area where I am allowed due to the Israeli stamps in my passport I think I have a decent understanding of the area.

Think of how few people know that if you have an Israeli stamp in your passport no matter what your religion is, you are not allowed to travel to most of the Muslim countries. I think that says all that has to be said about the area. We hear all the talk, but nobody cares that my wife is not allowed to visit the graves of her Grandparents, as are many Jews from that area.

Israel showed great restraint over the months of enduring missiles being fired at them. No other nation on earth is expected to sit still and not defend themselves. It is the duty of the Israeli government, just as it is the duty of every responsible government, to defend their citizens.

The fact that we did NOTHING when radical muslims attacked us in Libya and murdered four Americans, does not mean that Israel should do the same.

In fact, there may be thousands of "smith" or "jones" in the west, but in the middle east there aren't many with these co-incidences. The name is routinely attached to a family and is carried forward by father. This of course does not mean that the author is definitely related to Hamas.

First, it was not an assassination. Hamas is the first to say that they are at war with Israel and it is they who began this latest affair by rocketing Israeli civilian areas.
Second, the person killed was an Hamas military commander. In war, he is an enemy and is a legit target. They call it a war, he was a casualty. Period.
Third, if a Hamas missile killed an Israeli commander, there would be jubilation in Gaza and at NBC, CBS... along with CNN, ABC, Huff Puffington and the rest of the antisemitic media.
Last, all war is hell. Stop shooting of you want peace. If not, stop crying when it hurts.

These people hate each other and the only answer is for one of them to go down/away. I am so sick of hearing about it and seeing the pictures of mothers screaming/crying with tiny children in their grasp that I just don't have any feelings for it anymore except disgust. Move, leave - but to stay in that type of environment makes no sense. In reality, the Israelis have no chance for survival no matter how much fire power they have unless they are willing to slay all of their enemies that surround them because that is where they are - surrounded by enemies. This type of conflict will be even more prevelant as resources dwindle. I expect that a lot of what Israel hopes to attain for their citizens is never gonna happen.

It is sad but... I agree. neither side seeks a genuine peace so... the blood is on their hands. We here in the west need to stop playing traffic cop when this happens.

If one has to go away, then let Hamas move to a few acres land of the billion acres owned by the arabs. Israel has nowhere to go.

Israel and the Palestinians have been at it since around the 50s. The problem is that now the entire global economy is destabilized. Some think this was on purpose. I'm not one of those people - because frankly I think the world economy was -more- under control about a decade ago. Things have actually been getting -less- under control since around 2001. I think Wikileaks had a somewhat big role in this is because it completely undermined global faith and trust in Western nations.

If enough triggers are kicked off - it doesn't matter WHO started it - you just might see Russia and China getting involved if America or Europe starts firing off missiles.

Iran, who is allied to Syria, Libya, work with Egypt, and works with Turkey, will probably act if they are directly or indirectly attacked. For some bizzare reason, Bibi - the Israeli PM - is egging for a fight or something.

Even though multiple Mossad and American intelligence officers have emphasized that a war with Iran would be utterly disastrous, it all really boils down the Bibi's government pursuing this agenda. For what purpose? ... I'm not really sure - because usually political actors behave or act our of seeking some sort of profit or gain. The predicted reality, which has been shown in war games, is that if America or Israel attacks Iran, this could very will kick of an international conflict between the largest super powers.

That means that Russia and China would very well get militarily involved. Russian troops have been massing on the Norther border of Iran. The Chinese have been beefing up their navy and military assets. OK, guys?

The Russians don't play around. They aren't not like American soldiers. So really, I'm just stratching my head over all this. I can see why Bibi would sort of want to start a war? ... Perhaps to expand Israeli territory or to get a hold in Iran? ... But most of the countries around Iran are allied overtly or covertly with Iran - they have oil pipe lines and rail roads sprawling all over the place. The Iranian nation is trying to develop itself economically and commercially so that it's competitive. Another possibility that Israeli would want to strike Iran is to try to set them back in terms of economic or industrial competition. ...

All of these factors are what is coming to a head right now. ... But I really don't think things are going to Pan out as Bibi is planning - because the Russians and Chinese are pretty big players and are -not- really friendly with Israel. Europe is on the ropes and America, well, we're sort of in the hurt locker, too.

The situation is pretty damn fragile. And right now? ... If things light off? No matter who thinks who is right? ... We could all be very dead. And it won't matter who you are or what country you're from.

Nitrogen bombs would essentially render this world a lifeless husk. There would be no way to survive. So yes, this is all pretty serious. And you can bicker back and forth like children ...

But, seriously? ... We're talking about "End Of The World" type stuff here. So the childish pandering back and forth or propaganda isn't really going to do us any good.

We need real solutions to real problems.

Israel is going to strike Iran and Russia and China are not going to start a World conflict over it for a couple of reasons. They are hooked up with Iran because of economics - not political or social causes. We are still by far the biggest dog in the fight. And when the time comes - Irans theocracy will be replaced because most of the people do not believe in it or want it. I agree - there is no reason to talk or negotiate or pander - I say, get it on, get it over with and get on with it.

Um, ... yes, the Russians and Chinese -would- possibly get involved. Their own military commanders have said so. And frankly, if you don't think the Chinese and Russians could deal with the American military, you are seriously underestimating your opponents.

The Cuban Missile crisis, alone, should be a healthy reminder of this.

That fact that most of our military hardware and software now contains an enormous amount of Chinese counter-fit parts should be alarming.

Iran is critical to Chinese and Russian interests - it's one of their corridors into the Arab world as well as a strategic energy reserve. It is considered a "National Security Interest" to them - much like how we consider Japan a National Security interest to secure the Pacific.

If I'm not mistake, this is the first time Hamas has been able to reach Tel Aviv using Iranian missiles. This certainly up's the stakes and will probably result in a much more severe retaliation. Israel is already calling up reserves and massing at the border.

Since Iran calls the shots for Hamas, I wonder how much of this is a diversion from their nuclear ambitions. Maybe their entering a critical phase and want everyone focused on Gaza as much as possible. Wait to see if Syria or Hezbollah throw their hats into the ring.

The wild card will be the new Egypt. Morsi is going there tomorrow, so we'll get to see where the Egyptians truly stand with their new democracy. The ME is taking this 12/21/2012 stuff pretty seriously.

Mr. Obama the quasi Muslim was going to bring peace to the middle east and restore the respect of our allies and enemies. Maybe that's on his to do list right after nominating Rice as Secretary of State, lowering rise of the oceans, decreasing unemployment to less than 5.2%, avoidance of any tax increases on the middle class and cutrting the deficiet in half.

Can't say you didn't get what you voted for.

All I have to say is that the Egyptian and Syrian coalition which attempted to take Israel in 1967 as well as the Yom Kippur war remember what happened then. Israel is a very powerful nation. It's true military might is not even known. Their defensive as well as offensive prowess is well known in the world. I would not want them as an enemy.

Underscoring the depth of the problem, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in New York on Monday that Israel has no roots in the Middle East and would be "eliminated," ignoring a U.N. warning to avoid his usual incendiary rhetoric ahead of the annual General Assembly session. Iran denies seeking a nuclear bomb.

Obama said that the U.S. wanted to find a peaceful solution to the problem and believed "that there is still time and space to do so."

“But that time is not unlimited. We respect the right of nations to access peaceful nuclear power, but one of the purposes of the United Nations is to see that we harness that power for peace,” he said.

“Make no mistake: A nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained. It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations, and the stability of the global economy. It risks triggering a nuclear-arms race in the region, and the unraveling of the non-proliferation treaty,” he said.

“That’s why a coalition of countries is holding the Iranian government accountable. And that’s why the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,” he added.

Iran has no fear unless the US guarantees it's support of Israel.....What is Obama going to do???......now that he is done campaigning and ignoring the whole situation.

He skipped the customary one-on-one meetings with foreign counterparts but went ahead with the taping of a campaign-style appearance on the popular television talk show "The View" -- a tradeoff that drew Republican criticism.

Obama planned to be in and out of New York in 24 hours, one of the briefest presidential visits to the annual U.N. session in recent memory, and he will be off to the election battleground state of Ohio on Wednesday.

                                                        'Disgusting' video
Obama also discussed the attacks on U.S. embassies and consulates -- including the one that killed Stevens -- amid outrage over a California-made film that mocked the Prophet Muhammad.

"Today we must reaffirm that our future will be determined by people like Chris Stevens, and not by his killers. Today we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United Nations," Obama said.

He described the video that sparked the violence, "Innocence of Muslims," as "crude and disgusting" and an insult "not only to Muslims, but to America as well," but defended America's stance on freedom of speech.

While no one liked the dictators who were ruling those countries we backed certain ones and turned a blind eye to their policies because they maintained peace in the region - Barry seems to think that the people over there should be in charge and once they are in charge of their countries from those horrible dicators they would start to like us and peace would be restored. Wake up - they have had war and violence over there for thousands of years - they know no other way - they will bring you down to their level and beat you with millions dying for their cause. The only way is to drill here and lose our dependency on their oil - alternative energy is years away from being economicialy feasible - we have the oil resources to depend on until that time - no oil money going in there no riches - nothing to fight over - they become irrelevant - this could be the war that Barry said Romney was going to take us into if elected - well Barry lets see how you handle this and maintain our standing

Firing rockets into Israel randomly killing whoever is not going to stop the violence. The USA would never sit tight if a border country was attacking with rockets. It would be over in ONE Day. Palestine does not even have one government. They have two and one is Hamas which wants no Peace for any reason. They just want to kill people in Israel no matter what. In turn many innocent people get killed. If you can not sit at a table and promote Peace then just kill each other off until no one is left. What stupidity. Live your life and NOT trod on others. If you have nothing but hatred and bigotry then your life is NOT worth living.

                                                              Here are the facts:

                                                              Hamas refuses to:

                                                              1. Recognize Israel's right to exist.

                                                              2. Abandon random rocket assaults at Israel.

                                                              .

Now, you can be the negotiator; what do you say to both Hamas (terrorist organization) and Israel (peace treaties with both Egypt and Jordan) to get the ball rolling?

                                                              .

No matter the negotiator both 1 and 2 will continue. Until Palestine rids itself of Hamas there is never ever ever going to be any kind of Peace. Hamas do not care about innocent lives they just want to kill every person in Israel no matter what. They are sick and demented people. Sit down at the Peace table and talk Peace or continue to kill one another. It's up to both sides. Continue to War or try Peace.
