P.S. Obama has done more to advance equal marriage rights than any other President in US History. Also, pay attention to how civil rights matters are addressed in this country. The Israelis have as much right as anyone else to defend their borders and their citizens. Are they supposed to just sit there and take it while Hamas indiscriminately fires rockets into Israeli towns and cities killing Israeli civilians?!?! As far as civilian casualties in Gaza goes if the Hamas cowards stopped hiding their rocket launchers and weapons stockpiles in civilian areas, and in many cases in the basements of civilian home then civilian casualties could be avoided. So long as they use their own people as human shields there will unfortunately continue to be some civilian casualties. The only ones to blame for these casualties are Hamas themselves. I think that Israel has shown great restraint in that they have not simply wiped Gaza off the map. After all, it is the people of Gaza who elected these terrorist Hamas bastards to be their leaders so they deserve what they get.

As for Iran, Israel has every right to want to stop them from obtaining nuclear weapon. What country would sit back and blindly allow a country whose leadership has made it their primary mission to wipe you off the map to go ahead and obtain the means to do so. Any country would try and stop them from obtaining the capability to carry out that threat. Again, Israel has shown considerable restraint in allowing as much time as they have for diplomatic solutions to stop the Iranians. Unfortunately it has become increasingly clear that diplomacy and sanctions are not going to work. How much time is Israel supposed to give the Iranians to complete development of a nuclear weapon before they take action to stop their program.

As for your assertion that IAEA and US intelligence reports say that Iran is not working on weapons, I can only assume that you either have serious problems with reading comprehension or are delusional. The IAEA has stated very clearly in their recent reports that they feel that Iran is working on weapons development. US intelligence assessments have reached the same conclusion. There are some very clear indications that Iran is working on nuclear weapons. The first is their refusal to allow the IAEA unfettered access to all of their facilities. There are a number of facilities that they deny the IAEA any access to such as Parchin. There are also many facilities where Iran demands advanced notice of inspections. This is to allow them to play a shell game and move prohibited materials out of the site ahead of the inspections. Yet another indication of what they are up to is their continued enrichment of uranium beyond the 3-5% needed to power civilian reactors. They continue to enrich large quantities to a 20% enrichment level. They claim that this is being done to power a medical research reactor. The only problem is that they already have enough 20% enriched uranium to power many of these types of reactors and yet are only planning on building one. The only other reason to stockpile 20% enriched uranium is that this is the precursor to feed into advanced centrifuges to manufacture weapons grade material. Add to this the fact that they have been installing a large number of advanced centrifuges in their highly protected Fordo facility and their intent becomes pretty clear. They are setting things up so that they can rapidly produce large quantities of weapons grade material once they have a working bomb. Anyone with a brain can put together this logic and see exactly what the Iranians are up to. There has even been some indication in satellite photos that they may be in the process of preparing a location for an underground test. I do not know how far Iran is from a working weapon, but I would guess it is no more than a couple of years. They have continually stalled with promises of talks but the outcome is always the same. They delay and delay the talks and then when they finally take place the Iranians will basically agree to change nothing about their program. Every time the threat of military action to stop them becomes more heated they start making overtures towards new talks. Once things calm down they pull out and refuse to make changes. It is only a matter of time before we either take military action to stop them or they end up detonating a nuclear bomb. Time is rapidly running out and Iran needs to be given a hard deadline to take positive action to modify their program or face the use of force to stop them. This indeterminate timetable and constant talking is getting us no where and allowing the Iranians time to complete their activities. They really do not care about the sanctions because the leadership is not effected by them. They have convinced their people that their suffering under these sanctions is necessary so that they can defeat the "great satan" and the "zionists" and far too many of the people have bought into this propaganda. Once they have a working bomb there will be little we can do. I do not like the idea of us getting into another war, but it is past time for Obama to grow a pair and do something other than talk for a change. Otherwise things may get very grim in the Middle East.

Aid to Israel is being misrepresented by both sides on this thread. We have given aid to both Egypt and Israel as a part of the Camp David Accords. In 2007, the economic aid to Israel was ceased because of Israel's growing economy. But the GOP, with its usual stealth simply raised the military aid by 25% to about $3 billion a year guaranteed for ten years.

Most countries receiving "foreign aid" from the US receive either loans or loan guarantees. Israel has always demanded, and received, cash grants paid in gold.

In addition, Israel demands that the GOP House pick up the tab for its deficits. Currently they are requesting an addition for 2013 of $2.3 billion (again a gold cash grant.) The GOP is all for fiving them this "paltry" (according to Boehner) amount, while cutting US Social Security to pay for it.

There are also "black" grants to the Israelis for covert "services". These are estimated at another $2 billion a year, mostly from the DIA and CIA. There is another $1 billion or so in DARPA "joint" development grants.

If you all all this up, it comes to around $8.3 billion a year for 2013 and similar amounts for the following four years at least. There are also used military "goods" that are given to the IDF for free as "surplus." These goods include such Patriot missile reloads and replacement bombe and missiles.

If a war breaks out, current military agreements would immediately start pumping an additional $40 billion a year into Israel under the Pentagon's Battle Plan Jericho.

Hamas has talked of war since they became the elected majority. What have the Palestinians done to improve anything? Iranain missiles, foreign fighters, and they fired first. I guess you can't change some people who are prejudice against Jews. Why would anyone support a country intent on killing innocent people constantly?

The United States has been busy dragging Israel to the peace table as long as I can remember. I came of age in the late 60's. President Jimmy Carter worked hard and long to finally secure a peace agreement in the 70's. The world rejoiced until the Israeli leadership returned home and violated that agreement at the very first opportunity.

The U.S. has been the big brother to the Jewish people since the atrocities visited on them by Nazi Germany. We welcomed them with open arms into our own country. Many of them flooded our country and prospered. They soon became powerful businessmen and political leaders. Just as many sought a return to their ancient homeland in the Middle-East long called Palestine.

The fought a tremendous war and won a return to the Middle-East as the small Jewish nation of Israel by displacing many Palestinians that called that land home for many years. The mighty United States supported this effort as the now homeless Palestinian Arabs were forced into the unforgiving desert.

1967 brought a new Israeli war in the interest of expansion. The United States again supported this effort, as big brother, resulting in many more Arabs being forced into the desert. Is it any wonder that most common Arabs hate Israel and hate her big brother even more? We played favorites in the Middle-East when favors were relatively cheap. A few billion dollars here and a few thousand war machines there bought us an ally in the Middle-East with broad leverage and support from the powerful Jewish community in our own midst.

Suddenly, everything changed. Just as our own oil resources began to diminish, vast new oil reserves were discovered in the Arab world. The most impoverished nations on Earth became the richest nations on Earth. Our favoritism toward a nation that visited misery on many Arabs became a lodestone on our necks. They now had the means to retaliate and Arab terrorism became a fact of life. Fighting that terrorism has cost us dearly in treasure as well as loss of life and limb of America's finest.

Our stubborn and obstinate little brother sits in the middle of this and still aggressively pursues their land-grabbing efforts. Their powerful Jewish and Christian lobbies at home demand that we answer to their very whim.

Enough is enough. We've had your backs far too long as you continue to aggressively visit misery on your neighbors. We have paid an awful price on behalf of your greed and arrogance. You have repeatedly laughed in our face after decades of earnest negotiations on your behalf. The last check is in the mail. We suggest you use it wisely. You're on your own.

Who would have guessed it would take just one week for things to start coming apart? The region is like a volcano. It explodes, goes into a lull, explodes again and on it goes. I'm assuming the average Palestinian just wants to go about their life providing for their families, getting an education and living without fear. The West Bank under the Palestinian Authority remains shall we say calm but Hamas is dedicated to the destruction of Israel and will not agree to any sort of recognition of Israel and seems bent on a perpetual state on conflict. This may eventually lead to Israel having to re-invade the Gaza strip to try and remove them. A long and bloody conflict ensues. At least it takes Israel's focus off hitting Iran which might even be the aim of this exercise to give the Iranians more time to build "the bomb".

The point in bringing up Bush is that he represents an ideology; one that was just defeated at the polls. Neoconservatism is still a serious threat to this country (though I'm sure you'd disagree) and the neoconservatives are still working overtime to discredit this president, which you certainly should be aware of.

GW Bush spent government funds to invade two countries (one having nothing to do with 911), provide a multibillion dollar giveaway to pharmaceutical companies (Medicare Part D) and a huge tax cut for the wealthy. Since you're changing the sequence of events now and say you are talking about retaliation you have answered your own question. By the time we get around to retaliation - either retaliating for an attack on Israel or - and here is a key bit of information that has escaped you - retaliation for a nuclear detontation in the US, there are already quite likely millions of people dead. Certainly worth being concerened about.

Thank God you aren't making decisions for anyone but yourself, although the buffoon in charge doesn't have a clue either - and he will be making decisions that will affect million. If the Iranians are successful in producing nuclear material, depending on the grade of material, they will have many options - including dirty bombs, smaller sitcase type bombs, something larger placed on a water-craft, etc. The people living within the reach of their missiles are most certainly concerened. The battlefield widens when and if they complete their task in producing the material. Only someone that's short sighted and without basic cognitive skills would not be concerned.

I think you overestimate Israel's military capabilities. You should read a book entitled Raid On the Sun by Rodger W. Claire. It's about the Israeli attack on the Osirak nuclear reactor in Baghdad in 1981 using F-16's. The book gives a great deal of information about the tremendous amount of planning involved in that attack, and, while the attack succeeded, it just barely succeeded. An attack on Iran's nuclear facilities would be far more difficult than the attack on the Osirak reactor in Baghdad was for the simple reason that Iran is much further from Israel than Baghdad was; well beyond the combat radius of an F-16, and distance was a major factor in the raid on Baghdad as well. The Israeli's had to strip their F-16's of just about all their superfluous gear and add extra wing mounted fuel tanks that made the aircraft so heavy they were barely able to get off the runway. They also had the problem of having to fly over the airspace of northern Saudi Arabia without permission to get to Baghdad. The problems involved with trying to attack Iran would be much greater. Not only is the distance greater, but Iran's nuclear facilities are not all in one location.

Mickey, your mistake is in your comparison of an event that happened in 1981 using the technology available then to an event that might happen in the near-term using technology available today. The nuclear facility can be taken out with cruise missiles....something the Israelis have now that they didn't have then! That's just one option. Oh, and they do have ships that can go to the Persian Gulf! Hmmm....seems that's just off the coast of Iran last I looked. So try again, Israel has one of the most powerful armies on the face of the earth. Don't forget, everyone in Israel serves in the military for a mandatory stint. Both the Catholic Church and most Protestant denominations, too, have always taught that the Jews were God's chosen people in Bible times, but are no longer God's people. My mother got tired of listening to me and a friend argue about who got the can of pudding without a dent in the side of it while on a trip to a theme park. We would not stop for anything and she could not pick a side, so she got pissed grabbed both cans, put a matching dent in the other can so they were both messed up, and we could not tell what can was which. Yes. That would be King Solomon of Israel you are talking about there, and I agree with what you are saying. Many right wing, born again Christians have gotten it into there heads that the Jews are still God's Chosen People, and that God will somehow come to their aid if they are attacked. That's supposed to be a prelude to the battle of Armageddon according to their theology which is quite out of keeping with traditional, orthodox Christian theology in which it is the Christian church that is the "true Israel"; the "people of God". They are impressed with Israel's military prowess and like to use Israel as their proxy to fight battles in the Middle East. The other problem with your argument is Israel is less than 1% of the area while their Muslim brothers control the other 99% yet the only land they find acceptable is the legally established country of Israel. Maybe if they got over this and started building their own country like what is happening in the West Bank they would be better off.

1st point- They didn't fire missiles, but they fought wars and raided camps for a long time which led to whole villages being slaughtered. Quite similar actually.

2nd point- If someone took over the U.S. today and said, well we will just take half and you can take the other half I'm pretty sure we would start a war too, you can't fault them for wanting to defend what the believed was theirs.

3rd point- You have something there, the other Arab countries have shown no initiative to provide the Palestinians with land for a country or even to take care of refugees, but the other side is that Israel is also on the land that is the most historically significant to them and also the best suited for economic activity e.g. it has supplies of fresh water and is on the sea.

4th- Yes West Bank has made better decisions obviously, but Israel has continued to start settlements within West Bank and I have personally spoken with exchange students from West Bank who experienced harassment and destruction of property which is then celebrated and praised within the Settlement communities and go unpunished, retaliation by the Palestinians is punished severely. Remember the people who want to go and settle in the Palestinian areas are mostly staunch ultra- conservative semi-radical Israeli nationalists, and Israel supports them. So what kind of message is that for the Gazans if they submit and stop fighting, that they will be settled and further discriminated against? Say what you want about the Gazans because they haven't made any efforts at peace, but the Israelis certainly have not either.

And in this latest fight already several Gazan children have been killed, that's a recipe for peace right there huh?
