'Some indications' Hamas-Israeli truce is possible, Egypt says

NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Gaza City, where the streets remain empty as Palestinians brace themselves for overnight airstrikes as part of Israel's intense aerial campaign.

Updated at 11 p.m. ET: The day after Israeli aircraft bombed Hamas offices in Gaza and Hamas fired a rocket at Tel Aviv, Egypt's president said Saturday night that "some indications" exist that a ceasefire might be possible.

"There are some indications that there is a possibility of a ceasefire soon, but we do not yet have firm guarantees," Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi told a joint news conference with Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who was visiting Cairo.

Egypt had brokered an informal truce in October that has since collapsed, and it has said it is working for a new deal.

Before dawn on Saturday, Israeli aircraft fired missiles at Gaza buildings that included the office of Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, as armed conflict in the region entered its fourth day.

An Israeli missile from the "Iron Dome" defense system is fired Saturday to destroy a rocket fired from Gaza at Tel Aviv.

Hamas later retaliated, firing a rocket at Israel's biggest city, Tel Aviv, for the third straight day. Police said it was destroyed in mid-air by an Iron Dome anti-missile battery deployed hours earlier, and no one was injured.

But Hamas rocket fire appeared to be subsiding. The Israeli military said Sunday morning that Gaza militants hadn't attacked Israel since the night before.

Overnight, six journalists were wounded in Gaza City when Israeli warplanes hit a television station, according to Agence France-Presse. Reuters said witnesses identified the station as al Quds, which Israel sees as pro-Hamas. Sky News reported that around 5 a.m. local time, two missiles hit the building that houses its studios and offices. Al-Arabiya also said that its offices had been hit.

Medics say that 48 people living in Gaza were killed by early Sunday and more than 450 injured since Israel started airstrikes Wednesday, Agence France-Presse reported.

In the Israeli Mediterranean port of Ashdod, a rocket ripped into several balconies. Police said five people were hurt.

As the crisis escalates, Israel's military is considering waging a ground campaign. It started drafting 16,000 reserve troops on Friday, as Israel's Cabinet authorized the mobilization of up to 75,000 reservists. Troops were massing on the border and witnesses said they could see Israeli ships off Gaza's coast, NBC News' Ayman Mohyeldin reported.

In a broadcast statement, Hamas’s military wing, the Qassam Brigades, said a ground invasion would be "stupid and foolish."

The statement also said that Hamas has used sophisticated weapons – including locally made, long-range rockets -- to strike at Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

Hamas says it blames Israel for the war, saying that Israeli leaders made “stupid” decisions that triggered the wrath of Hamas, and that has forced Israelis into bomb shelters.

NBC's Martin Fletcher and Richard Engle report from Tel Aviv and Gaza, where violence is ramping up.

Despite the violence, Tunisia's foreign minister arrived in the coastal enclave on Saturday in a show of solidarity, denouncing the Israeli attacks as illegitimate and unacceptable.

Officials in Gaza said 41 Palestinians, among them 20 civilians including eight children and a pregnant woman, had been killed in Gaza since Israel began operations four days ago. Three Israeli civilians were killed by a rocket on Thursday.

Israel's military said its air force had hit at least 180 targets since midnight, including a police headquarters, government buildings, rocket launching squads and a Hamas training facility in the impoverished territory.

NBC's Mike Viqueira and Martin Fletcher report on the latest developments in the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and each weigh in on what role the US would play in a possible ground offensive by Israel into Gaza.

Reporting from Gaza City, NBC's Richard Engel posted a message on Twitter describing the buzz of drones over the city. "It sounds like everyone is out mowing their lawns in the dark," he said.

A three-story house belonging to Hamas official Abu Hassan Salah was also hit and completely destroyed early on Saturday. Rescuers said at least 30 people were pulled from the rubble.

"What Israel is doing is not legitimate and is not acceptable at all," Tunisian Foreign Minister Rafik Abdesslem said as he visited Haniyeh's wrecked headquarters. "It does not have total immunity and is not above international law."

A ball of fire rises from an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on Saturday.

Hamas says it is committed to continued confrontation with Israel and is eager not to seem any less resolute than smaller, more radical groups that have emerged in Gaza in recent years.

The Islamist Hamas has ruled Gaza since 2007. Israel pulled settlers out of Gaza in 2005 but has maintained a blockade of the territory.

Israel launched a massive air campaign on Wednesday with the declared aim of deterring Hamas from launching cross-border rocket salvoes that have plagued southern Israel for years.

The Palestinians have fired hundreds of rockets out of Gaza, including one at Jerusalem and three at Tel Aviv - Israel's commercial center. Jerusalem had not been targeted in such a way since 1970, and Tel Aviv since 1991.

Key players in the Israel-Gaza cross-border conflict

Although there were no reports of casualties or damage in either city, the long-range attacks came as a shock and advanced the prospect of an Israeli ground invasion into Gaza.

NBC's Richard Engle reports from Gaza City, where residents are preparing for a potential invasion as Israeli drones fly overhead.

"This will last as long as is needed; we have not limited ourselves in means or in time," Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman told Israel's Channel One television on Saturday.

In a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday, U.S. President Barack Obama reiterated American support for Israel to defend itself, Reuters reported. The two leaders also discussed options for "de-escalating" the situation, the White House said in a statement.

He also called Egypt's Morsi on Friday, and underscored his hope of restoring stability.

Rockets from Gaza fired on Tel Aviv and Jerusalem

Netanyahu held a four-hour strategy session late on Friday with a clutch of senior ministers on widening the military campaign, while other cabinet members were polled by telephone on increasing mobilization.

Political sources said they decided to more than double the current reserve troop quota set for the Gaza offensive to 75,000. It did not necessarily mean all would be called up.

Palestinians inspect the destroyed office building of Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh in Gaza City on Saturday.

In a further sign Netanyahu might be clearing the way for a ground operation, Israel's armed forces decreed a highway leading to the territory and two roads bordering the enclave of 1.7 million Palestinians off-limits to civilian traffic.

NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin answers your questions about Israel-Gaza conflict

The Israeli military said some 367 rockets fired from Gaza had hit Israel since Wednesday and at least 222 more were intercepted by its Iron Dome anti-missile system.

The Israel Defense Force said Saturday that mortar fire from Gaza had damaged an electricity cable in the south of Israel. "As a result, power is out in areas of northern Gaza Strip," the IDF said in a message posted on Twitter.

Four Iron Domes were deployed initially and a fifth was rushed into action on Saturday, weeks ahead of schedule. The army said it was placed in the Tel Aviv area, showing Israel's concern for the safety of its heavily populated coastline.

With respect to your question, Israel expects to be acknowledged with respect not total destruction called for by men who say their religion demands it. If Islamic leaders would listen to their own people who want to refrom Islam and make jhad obsolete, then the entire world would be at peace with Islam.

All the world, except for Islamic followers, believe that the present day Jewish State of Israel has the rightful claim to the same geographic area as was conquered by the Children of Israel, who are the generations of the same Abraham that the Arab Muslims claim to be their patriarch too. Muhammad, the author of Islam, acknowledged in his writings the existence of Jesus who was born in Bethlehem and conducted his ministry in and around Jerusalem during the time of the Roman occupation. To my knowledge, Muhammad makes no mention of the Palestinian people. Israel was the birthplace of Jesus. It is the world's conscience thought that with Mohammed's acknowledgement of Jesus in the Qua ran, that this should be verification enough for all Islamic followers, that Jewish people do have have land rights to the Biblical geographic area known as Israel.

If Muhammad acknowledged Jesus as a legitimate Prophet, this should be enough information to persuade Muslims that the Jewish people also have a legitimate claim to the land in which Jesus prophesied and the people he prophesied to.

I hope this helps you to understand why the world outside of Islam supports Israel. It is not because the Jew is God's chosen people, it is because they were there first. There is the "right of conquest". It is as ancient as time itself. The world view is that the Muslims reserve this right as theirs alone and deny it to everyone else for the sake of their Islam that was written more than 500 years after Jesus died.

Islam proves that the Jew has greater right to the area known as The Land Of Israel, conquered by The Children of Israel and ruled by their Kings. The Jew, by disporia, were scattered throughout the world and now they have returned to claim what has always rightfully been theirs.

Any Islamic hate toward the Jew is not spiritually based from God or Allah. God nor Allah could not possibly hate any of the descendants of the Father Abraham because both received his blessings and love. The world views the Arab's struggle against the Jew as a blood feud perpatrated by the jealous Arab brother against his Jew brother to be economically and politically and socially motivated without any spiritual or holy justification. That is why the Muslim's actions against the Jew are seen as evil.

It is wrong to hate your brother. It is a sin.

People forget that Jews and Arabs lived in peace together until the Zionists stole the land from them. Jews are not the problem, its ZIONISM! Do a little research and don't listen to the main stream zionist controled media.

The original Zionist settlements were already in Israel, before the UN mandate that allowed them to immigrate there. And, they purchased the property from Arabs. Many Arabs were happy to see them settle along side them because the Jew brought prosperity to them both. The Palestinians who were moved out in accordance with the UN mandate were offered other land and money. But they were ordered by their Islamic leaders to refuse. Some accepted and live along side the Jew today, in peace. Those that obeyed their Islamic leaders were moved to refugee camps in about 7 other Arab countries who refused to allow them to become citizens. The offer of land and money for living is still available to the refugees today.

The Arab refusal to allow these Palestinian refugees citizenship because they didn't believe they were enough like their country's Arabs and didn't want them to be made part of their Arab nationality. These countries have subjected the Palestinians and their children and their grandchildren to prison like confinements that still exist today This is what fostered hate against the Jew in order to use the Palestinians refugee status as a bargaining tool to extort vast amounts of money from the West for the refugees maintenance.

The Palestinians are held hostage by their own Arab leaders so they can make money out of their misery. And when the West grows tired of paying, a jihad is raised until they pay.

The Arab leaders have prostituted the Palestinians because in their heart, they do not really believe they are Arab, but the remnants of the Lost Tribes of Israel. It is the most provocative, costly, deadly con game carried out by greedy men ever perpetrated in the whole history of the world.

They have used the Islamic religion to oppress and suppress their same Muslim believers for the gain of money, not geography. The Arabs use geography as the bait laced with religious fever. . . money is all they really want. The proof is, they take the money and hold the hostages. Israel and the world has said they can come back and they will give them land and money and they can be free.

Hate for the Jew has festered and grown to jihad against the West because they have been told for so long that its the West protecting the Jew or the Jew manipulating the West into oppressing and surpressing the Muslims because of their Islamic faith. The West does not surppress Islam . . . Islam is practiced in every country in the West. You should see their beautiful Mosques. The average Arab Muslim earns slightly more money a year than the average American. His family lives better and is better educated than his American counter-part in America. The West does not surppress Islam or her Muslim children. Muslims in America say they are happy.

Answer me this: How happy is the Muslim made as he practices his religion in any Middle Eastern Muslim country? What are the blessings that he possesses today? In his heart, does he feel alone? Does he feel love or does he feel hate? Does he feel assured that his future is filled with success? Does he feel that he can really say what he wants and do what he wants to realize his dreams?

The funny thing about this is, Israel is damaging its image to the world. Things like this unites Muslims. Causing them to plot together to attack the West and Israel. But when Muslims do this, we call them terrorists. I like Israel, but they killing too many civilians. Mark my words, Muslims will use this as a reason to fight a "Holy War" aka "Terrorist War" against Israel and its supporters. Both sides needs to sit down and work on an agreement before this escalates into a full blown war. I want to remind everyone, this is distracting us from the bigger picture, IRAN. With Nuclear weapons, Iran will back the Palestinians. Leading to a Nuclear war, or WWIII.

DO Not back Israel. They are one of the most discriminatory states that there is. Their people are very discriminatory and hostile. I have worked with them, and totally dislike their attitude.

Please, let them fight it out for themselves with NO MORE of our financial or war help.

It appears people believe the Palestinian propaganda machine. The palestinians have been firing rockets for years. every day! Although most of those rockets are like overgrown bottle rockets and do no damage there is still the occasional hit. This is the definition of terrorism.

Furthermore these rockets are fired from populated areas so they can advertise any civilian casualties when the Isrealies do shoot at the shooters.

Good for Israel. They sent 500 rockets onto your soil, and you haven't yet to send that many back to them. They started it again, so I say take care of yourselves. You certainly can't depend on us Americans anymore to back you, though we should if we knew what was good and right in the Heavenly Father our Creator's eyes. The problem is America isn't a true mostly Christian nation anymore. I mean most people claiming to be Christian's in the USA now are not true Christians, they haven't read the Old Testament or the New Testament. The frequent church so rarely. They engage in immoral behavior and don't care if it is against what the Bible says or not. So, though the real Christians and the real Jewish people that are living in the USA want to support Israel in more than a few words that are not probably even genuinely spoken, we have an administration that doesn't understand what the Bible meant when it read: I will bless those that bless thee (Israel) and I will curse those that curse thee (Israel). To not supporting you with more than words Dear Israel, I believe we are quietly cursing you. I believe that is why America has seen the hand of protection removed from us by the Creator of all. I believe we will see worse storms, financial ruin, earthquakes, more fires, more floods. We will get what we sow. I wish we would sow blessings into Israel for the Jewish people, but I really see America more likely reaping sorrow for our non-helpful involment.

Nentanyahoo is a thief, a liar, a coward, and a murderer. Israel was handed someone else's country out of guilt and biblical nonsense. Their constant thieving and manipulation (Israel) dates back to them stealing the plans for their aircraft from France after they were shut off. The American Jew believes that it has some sort of obligation to Israel purely out of religious fanaticism and arrogance to refer to their religion as also being their "race". There is no Jewish DNA, it's a religion. The Jews have made a history of martyrdom only to come crawling back in. Read your history, it's what they do. Spain threw them out and they came back. This is what the muslims need to understand, you simply can't get rid of them once they are entrenched, not possible. The same could be said about any foreign occupation and annexation by any power. Spain, Portugal, France, England, Belgium, the list is infinite and expands all throughout history. The main difference here is that the Jews were HANDED someone else's country. They fought, they kept it, and then made the typical mistake that they usually do and demanded more! Why? Because the USA had their back due to the enormous influence of Jews in America. The truly sad thing about this is that there are so many American Jews yelling "Back Israel" who instantly throw concentration camps into your face when none of them, even generationally (yeah I made a new word), ever had to deal with those horrors! How insulting is that to use people's god awful suffering as a backing for Israel's stupidity when they themselves have never had to endure anything even close to something like that? All Israel had to do was stay put and stop displacing and murdering Palestinians and then any and all attacks against them would have seemed unprovoked by everyone watching and people would have gladly helped them defend themselves. Instead they expand, crush, and kill anyone that gets in their way toward an abysmal piece of land in hopes of basically turning Palestine into a giant concentration camp where they can literally decay the entire people by denying them the necessities of being able to live in the modern world. This has got to stop. The Jews can't be removed, everyone needs to get that, they have taken root. The Jews are causing the conflict, the world and especially the US needs to get that. Until that murdering coward is removed from power in Israel and the country stops its manifest destiny of conquering Palestine this conflict will never end. America needs to back off and stop funding this outrageously stupid ideal that will do nothing more than bankrupt us even further than we already are with the only payout being that idiot Bibi demanding more money and spitting in our face. And before you all yell "bigot" and "anti-Semite" there are more than just a few Jews (myself included) who call ourselves Americans before we call ourselves Jews who believe what Israel is doing is WRONG!

Awsome History reader. Did you know that the US outlawed jews from going south of the mason dixon line in 1862? They were raping the south and trying to keep the war going for profit. They have never changed and they never will until the good people on this earth put a stop to these userers.

historyreader2501, I guess you have no pride. I am an American and feel we shouldn't be meddling in the middle east. I am of Irish decent and will let an Englishman know I am. Yes I am an American born Irishman and I don't give up liniage because I was born here. Unlike you, I refuse to hide in shame from anybody.

I'm really just getting sick and tires of the whole 'civilian casuality' crap. It is war. If you are at war against an organization than the 'host' country needs to kick them out 100%. If they let them live among their population then that makes them collateral damage if they get killed. Civilians have the option to move out or kick the trouble out themselves, those are their two options.

This PC war @!$%# is for the birds. If you harbor terrorist and KNOW it and are not doing absolutely everything in your power to remove them then you place collateral damage markers on yourself and your own people.

Also this pc war crap really really drags out conflict duration and cost. If your goign to kill them just kill them all and get it done with. Pull that band aid off in one fast pain full move. Don't slowly peel it off dragging out the pain and agony. don't surgical strike those @!$%#s, carpet bomb a few blocks and the ones that do somehow survive will know their place or end up dead also.

Do republicans really believe that Obama would defend America from terrorist attacks launched from Mexico? Gee... I would have bet that FOX News would be on the air before the first missile landed telling everyone that Obama gave them the missiles and pointed them in the right direction.

Do you really think/comprehend/understand what this is all about? It isn't about politics, it is about religion. And it isn't about Christianity. It isn't about Judaism. If you need another hint, then you are truly not understanding this.

We do not control Israel's decisions or the Palestinians. We need to keep out of this one! The USA has never been able to accomplish any great measure with bringing these two together. They are never going to get along. Deal with it!

That whole area has been a hot bed since WWII. Lets face it the Palestinians hate the Jews. They keep attacking Israel, with the mass weapons from Iran, witch in turn is trying to wipe Israel out! I believe Israel should do everything they can to protect and stop the attacks on there sovereignty!

well, if that makes you sick, I can only imagine how you would be if the truth ever got a hold of you. Muslims have attacked other religions since the day they proclaimed who they were/are. Before then, there was no Muslims for Jews to "attack" (actually, Jews only have ever been in a posture to defend), but there was Jewish land before there were Muslims, just saying. Historically. Am I wrong? Prove it.

Yes you are wrong Wade, go to the Holy Land and find out the truth. Just read some Israeli newspapers on the net to see how ugly these war mongers really are. It comes right from the horses mouth. All my friends are reading these papers now and have completely change their opinion of Israel. More and more people are finding out. It's just a matter of time now.

parkerjoe56 - No, he is correct. War has been waging in that area of the world long before the current countries ever came into being. It has been going on for literally thousands of years. The war in that region is not "winnable." I do not claim to understand why there has been war in that region since the birth of civilization, which is especially sad considering civilization was born in that area.

The concept of the "holy land" is a myth, unless you are referring to mortar holes.

The civilized nations of the world, both western and eastern, need to get out of that region and never look back. Let them do what they do best, fight wars, without the rest of us getting involved.

Underscoring the depth of the problem, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in New York on Monday that Israel has no roots in the Middle East and would be "eliminated," ignoring a U.N. warning to avoid his usual incendiary rhetoric ahead of the annual General Assembly session. Iran denies seeking a nuclear bomb.

Obama said that the U.S. wanted to find a peaceful solution to the problem and believed "that there is still time and space to do so."

                                <br>

“But that time is not unlimited. We respect the right of nations to access peaceful nuclear power, but one of the purposes of the United Nations is to see that we harness that power for peace,” he said.

“Make no mistake: A nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained. It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations, and the stability of the global economy. It risks triggering a nuclear-arms race in the region, and the unraveling of the non-proliferation treaty,” he said.

“That’s why a coalition of countries is holding the Iranian government accountable. And that’s why the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,” he added.

Iran has no fear unless the US guarantees it's support of Israel.....What is Obama going to do???......now that he is done campaigning and ignoring the whole situation.

He skipped the customary one-on-one meetings with foreign counterparts but went ahead with the taping of a campaign-style appearance on the popular television talk show "The View" -- a tradeoff that drew Republican criticism.

Obama planned to be in and out of New York in 24 hours, one of the briefest presidential visits to the annual U.N. session in recent memory, and he will be off to the election battleground state of Ohio on Wednesday.

                                'Disgusting' video
Obama also discussed the attacks on U.S. embassies and consulates -- including the one that killed Stevens -- amid outrage over a California-made film that mocked the Prophet Muhammad.

"Today we must reaffirm that our future will be determined by people like Chris Stevens, and not by his killers. Today we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United Nations," Obama said.

He described the video that sparked the violence, "Innocence of Muslims," as "crude and disgusting" and an insult "not only to Muslims, but to America as well," but defended America's stance on freedom of speech.

Hamas started this, Hamas is financed by Iran. Today the IAEA announced that Iran has doubled the number of centrifuges to enrich uranium to weapons grade. The attack by Hamas is simply to distract Israel from launching a pre-emptive attack to destroy Irans nuclear capability. Likely, Hamas in Lebanon will join in to keep the Israelis hopping around from one front to another while Iran gets it's bomb together and then we will all be in deep doodoo.

Frog the IAEA did not say Irandoubled its centrifuges to make weapons grade uranium you liar. They did add centrifuges but only enrich to 20%. It takes 90% to make a weapon. But don't let the truth stand inn your way you Israeli troll. Can an Israeli tell the truth? Ask Sarcozy.

Parkerjoe56, First, I am not a liar, I may not have understood that they were only enriching their uranium to 20%, as I understood it that was weapons grade but apparently 90% is more accurate. Second, I am not an Israeli troll, I am simply aware of the danger a nuclear Iran poses to the entire world and I believe that sooner or later Israel will do whatever is necessary to prevent that from happening and so do the Iranians, they're ugly but not stupid. Lastly @!$%# off! If you can't post without insulting someone, don't post.........

You support the killing of women and children by backing Israel. Read why Israel is hated so much in this world. They even have to pass laws like in germany so people can't tell the truth about Israel without getting arrested.
