The Hostess family: Twinkies, Golden Cup Cakes and Zingers. Hostess Brands Inc. will liquidate its business after striking workers with the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union did not come to an agreement with company management.
Next week may be Black Friday but sweets lovers across the nation hung their heads in sorrow on a dark Friday yesterday as Hostess announced they would cease making their line of products, which include the iconic Twinkies brand, because of the Bakers Union Strike.
But now as the brand heads towards liquidating and selling off their assets, a Mexican company may be angling to resurrect the golden Twinkies.
Read the original story at NBC Latino
According to the Christian Science Monitor, while food producers ConAgra and Flowers Food, the American company behind Nature Valley granola, have expressed interest along with Little Debbie baker McKee Foods, Mexico’s Grupo Bimbo may hold the inside track.
Grupo Bimbo is the world’s largest bread-baking firm, which already owns parts of Sara Lee, Entenmann’s and Thomas English Muffins and previously made what was considered a low-ball offer of $580 million a few years ago, Forbes reports. Now Hostess may only be worth $135 million.
Economists say high sugar prices tied to US trade tariffs were a big reason Hostess was struggling, but a Mexican company could be a lifeline for Twinkies because it would be able to take advantage of access to lower-priced sugar in Mexico.
While Hostess was clearly struggling, analysts believed Grupo Bimbo had an eye on them since the early 2000s because they saw Hostess as a key ingredient for North American expansion with delivery routes that penetrated across the country into convenience stores, gas stations and grocery markets, according to Forbes.
Daniel Servitje Montull runs Grupo Bimbo, which was founded by his family in 1954. His family is worth $4 billion.
Servitje Montull, has already worked magic before, taking on Mexico’s tortilla market and positioning white bread in Latin America.
If Grupo Bimbo pulls off a deal with Hostess for Twinkies, his next challenge will be resurrecting an American favorite.

I guess the scum sucking union got their due, now you can go to Mexico and get a job. And take Obama with you.
Looks like the mexican drug cartel has a new way of "exporting" thier drugs, in twinkies!
The unions members got what they deserved. I hope the best for the Mexican company.
sorry to tell you bimbo already has american brand bread and sweet products for a while. stroehmann, maiers, entemans, and other well known brands.
Americafirst, and I hesitate recognizing your name since it contains my country, one that I'm proud of.
Just WTH does our President have to do with this? Are minds so shallow that they aren't capable of carrying on a conversation about anything without trashing our President?
Move to another country if your hatred for the President of my country is so deep that you feel the need to spew even when there's a totally different topic.
Yeah! Those filthy scum workers should have just taken their benefit cuts and pay cuts and been happy with whatever their republican owned company decided they were worth! It isn't surprising to see the company pull a republican and move to where they can use slave workers with no protection laws for cents on the dollar compared to what those filthy republican scum lords pay their mexican counterparts here in the states!!
Hey the rat tea party or republicans, are trying to use anything they can to make people believe in their fanatic bull@!$%#. It's that simple. If they get their way you will be working for whatever they want you to. Unions all the way baby.
They don't want Obama in Mexico, he would be devastating on their economy, as it is Mexico will be in a position to purchase the states when we go bust. they will have billions to spend on our failed corporations and everyone will be running the border to get to Mexico for a better life because that is where the jobs will be. its only a matter of time and the United States will be forced to go the way of the Twinkie. Twinkies for Mexico.
Today Twinkies tomorrow GM and and Ford.
Penelpoe2 - The trashing of this President is done because he has trashed our economy and the worst has yet to be seen. You will see many more companys closing because of the unions and this President is supported by the unions. That is fact. And BTW, typical comment from the left, leave the country if you don't like him, I don not hate Obama, I hate what I see is happening to our country.
Your Right! Michelle Obama has beeing trying to get rid of fast food, this is just another step. Together with Obama care they are going to cut more jobs! But if you look at the big picture then they need to attack Computer manufatures, Tv manufatures, four wheelers manufactures, anything that keeps Americans from getting out and play or work out instead of sitting inside that's whats wrong with out Children and it boils down too the parents make her kids get out and play, ride bikes and play basket ball or football instead of sitting inside and watching it!
It appears the bakeries will be here in the U.S.

Special thank you to President Obama and the unions for selling us out to Mexico, the Chinese, the Muslim Brotherhood, and for giving the Russians all the flexibility they want. I'm so excited to be part of the generation that gets to watch America go through its slow and painful decline, as debt and entitlements eat us up from the inside out.
The name of the condition is called "Obama derangement syndrome." It's an irrational hatred for President Obama that is so obsessive that it crowds out all other thoughts. Its basis is racist in nature, and these people are beyond contempt. Fortunately, after the election, when all their hate counted for nothing at the ballot box, they are now marginalized and irrelevant. They're now simply an embarrassment in the Republican Party. And the media is tired of the story. The wing nuts just infest the internet these days with their incoherent babbling.
All the more reason to completely cut all incentives and deductions for big business and tax the hell out of any product being imported back into the country from these turncoats that move companies outside the country in order to screw their workers. Good riddance and make them pay twice the taxes they would have had they just been fair to their workers here in the states. Good news for mom and pop businesses that will fill their gaps. Give them tax breaks and incentives to grow their new small businesses. Workers don't hurt businesses. Companies push all of their costs back onto the consumers to begin with.
What are the workers supposed to do? Take another pay cut after the last one they took a few years back. The company was not being run well for years and in order for their CEO's to make their millions they need to make the hard workers of the company take pay cuts when their salaries are already small. Give me a break. Read up a little more on this before making false statements--moron!
Exactly Shameon. I read up on them last night after my wife told me about Hostess going bankrupt because the workers rejected their latest offer. Cut the hard workers as they have been doing but yet giving raises to the do nothing executive workers.
@ MIC-ALABAMA: You want the contraction "you're", not the adjective "your." And the word "manufacturers" instead of "manufatures" which is no word at all. And for that matter, you want the word "to" instead of "too." President Obama went to school and became a great man, while you were out playing sports. You should try some education, it's a wonderful thing.
The "Alabama" in your name certainly comes as no surprise, by the way.
many of American top brands are now made overseas, they have many, many factory's right across the border, go to San Diego and drive along the border road(be careful not to hit any people jumping the fence), and you will see miles and miles of North American factory's taking advantage of low labor costs,no regulation,no taxes, no health care no environmental rules.
If this Mexican company does indeed buy Hostess, I've eaten my last twinkie for a fact!!! Mexico is the ENEMY and I'll be glad when we blow them and their drug scum cartels off the map!!!! And before you even say anything about the companies they already own parts of, I'll beat ya to the punch by letting you know i don't eat any of that crap either! When we get out of these other countries that we're in right now we need to come home and get ready to fix these drug thug killers and invade that garbage dump of a country and fight the real war we need to have been fighting a long time ago as they are the one's that are ruining America on a daily basis for decades!!!!
@Clarence24, well aren't you special! All you can manage to do is pick apart the spelling of other posts, and insult everyone who doesn't worship at the altar of the prophet Barak. If the "education" you're referring to is going to make us be arrogant jerks like you, then I think we should just pass!
@ou812-2250135, You're delusional, get help!
At some the American worforce needs to come together and realize that the labor unions are the only "glue" that is trying to tighten the gap between the poor and the rich. The protection of these large corporations is only allowing them to batter their workers into a ever downward spiral of lower wages, decreasing health benefits and the whole time recording at or near all time record high earnings. Take the time to research the overall raises of the working class compared to ceo/cfo's of these corporations over the last 25 years. Labor is not to blame for the majority of these corporate failures, the aggressive need to make profits at any expense (including the wages, benefits and working conditions of their employees that are actually the lifeblood that makes and distributes their products)
They'll start making hot and spicy guacamole Twinkies .
Ryon-7305091
Very true. Corporations no longer sell their products for profit. The product has become secondary to the shares the corporations created and sold off for profits to begin with. It is the daily buying and selling of shares and having to pay off the shareholders that is destroying corporations now. Not the actual products that got them to where they are or the hard workers that built that product for them.
Who's fault was it when jobs were going to Mexico before Obama became president.
Clareance24 - Give me a break. Racism has nothing to do with it. BTW - Did you know that the democratic party is the founder of racism? The Confederate States of America, attempted to secede from the Union, one the main reasons was, Abe Lincoln (R), then the President of the United States wanted to end slavery, and then Jefferson Davis (D), the President of the Confederacy, proclaimed that the Confederate States desired to secede. Isn't the Democratic Party the party you claim? Oh yeah, just so you know I am a registered Independent.
It's amazingly easy to spot the people on these boards that get their information exclusively from Faux News and Rush.
Unfortunately, it is the workers who really suffer when the companies they work for are run by retard Tea Baggers. These guys are so bought into the myth that President Obama will wreck the economy and tax them to death that they'd rather cut off their own heads than try to help improve conditions for everybody.
You can bet that the CEO and the board of directors of Hostess will come out smelling like roses while they leave the rest of their company out in the cold.
I've worked in the food manufacturing industry for decades, and I'm sure that most of the workers at the Hostess plants have been there for years and years. There was a time when loyalty was a two-way street. The company would treat a longtime worker well and reward their years of service. At the same time, when times got hard, the workers would make sacrifices to help the company.
Not anymore. Nowadays, the company is shameless about asking the workers to sacrifice time and time again, but, even when things are going well and the company is making a lot of money, there is no reward for the loyal workers. No one says anymore "When things were going poorly, you sacrificed, took pay cuts, worked short hours, went above and beyond. Now, we're doing well. We're going to raise your salaries back to where they were. There will be nice bonus checks for everyone at the end of the year. Thank you."
There used to be a social contract between the workers and the owners of a company. Under the new philosophy of the Koch Brothers and the Donald Trumps of the world, the CEO's take mulit-million dollar bonuses while the company takes a loss and makes the workers on the line pay for it.
I've worked for Mexican companies before. They treat their workers better than American companies do. It's a disgrace.
This is just another case of workers thinking that the company they work for is wealthy and that they haven't been sharing the wealth. This is what happens when liberals feel like they are owed something.
I blame the media for this making everyone believe that companies owe their employees something.
This had nothing to do with the CEO. If it had, the company would have gladly have gotten rid of their CEO awhile ago. They were probably in some financial trouble for sometime.
I hope those employees like the unemployment line. Afterall, the only reason those workers are now unemployed is because it is their own fault.
Mike from AZ: Is that the reason why we have so many people crossing the border?
Don't be surprise next will be the White house.
Mike from Arizona the only retard here is you. The Liberal and the Union will destroy this Nation.
JimO- Lincoln would be a Democrat today and Davis would be a Republican. It's a specious argument to compare party philosophies from 150 years ago to what is happening in the world today.
And, in my opinion, anyone that brags about being a registered independent is bragging about their inability to make a decision.
Unhappy- The economy in Mexico is terrible because of rampant corruption at all levels of government, not because of the large corporations.
Toss in our war on drugs that props up the cartels just like Prohibition propped up Al Capone and Lucky Luciano, and people have to go somewhere to try and live a decent life.
After I left the last Mexican company I worked for, I received a check in the mail for my last bonus five months after I had left. I've left American companies and have had to fight for vacation pay that I had coming.
And companies do owe their employees something. Ask Henry Ford. Ask Lee Iaccoca. Ask Howard Hughes (before he went crazy). Hell, ask Bill Gates.
CEO's do less for the success of their companies than the workers in their factories, yet basically get all the rewards anymore.
Gregorio- Hurry! Grab the Cheetos and beer. Hannity's about to speak. You don't want to miss out on what you're opinion is supposed to be!
Yes, it's the workers who caused this corporation to fail. Yes, the workers - you know, the ones at the very bottom of the corporate food chain, the ones who get the least amount of money and the least benefits (and were told to give a big chunk of it back) who actually manufacture the product, not the CEO's who, when the corporation was already failing because of their mismanagement, got not only their multi-million salaries and full benefits and, on top of that, got 80% more of it in "rewards." When this scandal was discovered, some offered, to try and look good, to give some of it back.
Yes, it's always those workers, the ones working midnite shifts, pumping out the stuff, who make the money for the rich owners, who are at fault. By the way, if this Mexican-based company buys Hostess, the jobs don't go to Mexico, they stay here, in the same factories with the same workers. It says a great deal when Mexican corporatists can make it all work, but "American" corporatists (who make lots more money) can't.
Penelope2, REALLY?!? You're a typical Obama supporter - too ignorant to know that backing the unions to the detriment of the public is his main program!
Mike from AZ, I'm from AZ, Tucson to be exact, and I'm proud to be a registered independent. It's how I, as a retired Military Intelligence soldier, demonstrate the fact I believe in some of the same beliefs as the democratic party, and some of the republican party... which is the whole purpose of being able to register as an independent - I am able to make up my own mind on the issues without having a party tell me which way to vote!
re WF-
I'd have an easier time believing your statement about being an independent if it wasn't for your comment to Penelope.
Obama's whole purpose of running for President was so he could damage the country by supporting unions. Well, thanks for clearing that up! I always wondered why someone would want to be President.
Nanlo, We all discriminate on a daily basis. If you choose to buy your groceries at Safeway, then you are discriminating against Albertson's, etc.! And why would you want to buy a twinkie from a bimbo?!?
Mike - Just because I'm an independent doesn't mean that I have to be unbiased down the line. Of course, as I said originally, I agree with some ideals of each party. But I don't degrade my "independence" by being against the ideals and performance record of the idiot who just got reelected because there are more dumb people voting than smart ones these days!
And, by the way, "whole purpose" and "main program" are not synonymous!
I would have paid 50 bucks to see the look on those Union workers faces..."you cant just close the doors on us...can you? what do you mean were out of a job? you are not in the public union that has a bottomless pit of money! the jokes on them! jacked up X-mas for all!
Hey Mike from AZ - who ya gonna blame next? You are are full of --it, the dems are always comparing to the past, your analysis of the flip flop on the two I mentioned is almost comical. But I will just call it a bold flat lie.
They're not synonymous, but they're pretty close in meaning. Please explain what you think his motivation is for wanting to destroy the country?
What I have a hard time understanding is why there are so many working-class people voting against their own interests these days. The republican party has nothing to offer anyone making less than a million dollars a year.
Mike-424215
Isn't it getting a little old?
You liberals sit on these threads all day and bemoan your mediocrity because of the evil rich, fat-cat, "do nothing executive workers" and all other bogeymen that you create.
You self-aggrandize your alleged intellect yet you don't create commerce or work your way up the corporate ladder to take over these demonic corporations. You praise the decades of
uniongoonion corruption that has been part of the reason our manufacturing industries leave our shores and you demonize the remaining prosperous sectors and wonder why they are leaving. If you're so outraged why aren't you going to Wharton's business school, working your way up the corporate ladder for 20-30 years and run these conglomerates the way you think they should be to create your Liberal Shangri-La? Tell your potential investors they won't make any money on their investments and see how many businesses you create. Let the goonions determine your wages, benefits and legacy costs and see how long you last as they're simply concerned with collecting their dues. Let the EPA decide what, where and how you can build anything and see how successful you become. And last but not least make sure you give much more of your profits as taxes to our criminal government because they know how to redistribute your money better than you do.
Doesn’t it get old listening to Barrack Hussein telling you that the best you can be is middle class? When is the last time he promoted you should want to achieve the most that you possibly can, not just middle class. Did you grow up wanting to be middle class or did you dream of being rich? I bet you did. Do you buy a Power-Ball lottery ticket to give all your winnings to charity? I bet you don’t.
It’s time you Liberals grow up and stop living in the “Life of Julia”. Our government is the worst example of how to run a corporation yet you put your full faith in it.
Kinda sad isn’t it?
Really Jim? Who are all the geniuses signing petitions to secede from the union these day? I don't believe they're democrats.
Lincoln said that we have a "Government of the people, by the people and for the people". Who does that sound like?
Ron Paul says government should only build roads and fight wars. Mitt Romney says that 47% of the country are takers and victims.
Sound like the same party line to you? If it does, you're just too ignorant to debate with.
To the anti-union idiots... (Who probably work at Wal-Mart for $8.00 an hour.)
Non union baker in Colorado $9.00 an hour, for a laborious and very skilled job. NO BENEFITS
Union baker - (me) nearly $21.00 an hour, Best benefits money can offer ($400 a week’s worth) paid 100% by company.
Most BAKERS know that Bimbo Bakeries USA is the Largest Baking company in the world and more than doubles the next 3 largest competitors. They currently have +-100 bakeries in the United States. Anyone who know anything about the industry would tell you that BIMBO BAKERIES USA, is the ONLY company that has the funds, the means AND the management to turn a turd of a company such as hostess into a
gem. They have done it with a little known company named SARA LEE! I worked for Bimbo many years and they are an excellent company to work for.
Also, the "stubborn" unions didn’t do this to hostess. Hundreds and hundreds of bakeries can afford a golden 80 retirements, good benefits and $20.00 an hour per employee very nicely. Hostess had terrible management who gambled with the workers jobs and retirements and lost. Terrible ideas that were given entirely too much effort and money along side with bad management is what destroyed the company, not the unions.
one more thing... 23 states in the united states are right to work states (almost all are republican) and 21 or 22 of those states are the most povern states in the united states. The poorest half of the country discourage unions.
word of advice... know what you are talking about before you bash... helps keep you from looking foolish.

She will be survived by the Socialist Democratic Republic of Obamerica or SDRO.
Also killed in this same massive, catastrophic, progressive wreck were personal freedoms, American values, exceptionalism, the Constitution, economic growth, conservatism, fiscal sanity, American unity, free markets, life's sanctity, marriage between man and woman, Republicanism, free will, self-reliance and many more, so mutilated, as to be unrecognizable any longer.

Capitulation is NOT in our vocabulary. UNITED we stand. LIVE FREE OR DIE.
JimSpence-
You see, that's the whole new Republican myth in a nutshell (pun intended). Not everyone wants to be fabulously wealthy.
The American Dream used to be that you could own a car, a house and a picket fence. Now, Reince Priebus (I don't care if I spelled his name correctly or not) says everyone should want to be a millionaire. How do you think that would work? 330 million millionaires in this country, if everyone follows the new republican American dream.
I did graduate from Business School. I spent some time climbing the corporate ladder. And you know what? I discovered that I didn't like the people that played the office political games. I discovered that I possess absolutely no talent for a$$ kissing. I discovered that I am a much happier person working in middle management running the factory floor. I took a job with a different company managing production.
I know, it's a fate worse than death. I'll never have a membership to a country club. Never own a yacht. Won't have my own driver.
I'm middle class and I'm happy. I just don't want you and the Koch brothers and Mitt Romney to squeeze my shoes anymore.
Typical for a Dem Mike from AZ, change or destort what was said or did happen and then resort to name calling. Not very original, but expected.
I didn't change or distort anything. Everything I stated is true and verifiable. And I called you no names, just stated a potential adjective based on your response.
Not my fault if you lived up to it.
JimSpence
Mike-424215
Of course it is getting old and quite frankly we are getting very tired of it. If the management isn't going to stop looking at the profit lines for themselves and the credit holders they sold their company in the form of shares to aren't going to start looking at us workers and start taking care of us, then get rid of you all and start the mom and pop shops back up around the nation. We were better off back then before corporations squeezed them out.
AZ -Posting that a person is too ignorant to debate with is name calling. As I said, name calling is a typical dem trait and if we were in a debate about these issues I could and would confront you with facts and when you attempted to distort those facts, another nice trait you have, you would be confronted with the true facts and the proof that could not be disputed. Have a good evening.
Corporations led by psychopaths suck. Socialism is looking better every day if the fascists keep pulling this scrooge crap . I'll Stand with labor over corrupt CEO's and wall street any day.
As Mike said, yes, it's getting old (and not just a little). It's time for America to take back capitalism from corporatism. You conservatives all praise, worship and adore the corporate CEO's and say how "hard they worked" and slobbering about "all their education." And yet these goons can't run a simple business. Hostess failed because the over-paid, over-benefitted CEO's didn't have a clue as to run a business. And, because of their mismanagement, ineptness and downright stupidity, they rode it into the ground. And what did they get for it? Not only their complete obscene salaries and benefits, but a reward of 80% more of it. Meanwhile, those bottom-of-the-rung workers who actually do the work are asked to give up 25% of what they earn in salaries and benefits combined.
Yeah, that's how to run a business. Only if you're "hard working," "educated" and totally stupid and greedy. The wealthy have brought down this country by betraying and abandoning capitalism and replacing it with corporatism. It's time to take America back, and become aggressive about it. Rounding up and arresting a bunch of CEO's for destroying America is the first place to start.
Capitalism and Unions Forever - Corporatism and Plutocracy Never.
Wow thanks union scum for destroying another American company.
Just what I always wanted, a twinkie made by a mexican BIMBO
Well said, Jerry.
Ditto
Mike from AZ
JimSpence-
The Liberal delusion continues. It’s good you could get a job with that “different company” isn’t it. What if that “other company" didn’t exist? What if whoever started that company decided not to get out of bed that one day, or not to take a risk on the next management improvement, or expand their work force to be more competitive? I guarantee you those people did some “a$$ ki$$ing” to create their company. That’s what separates successful from mediocre.
Yes, I confess, I DO have this ideal image of business in my mind. I sit on the Board of 3 companies I created, built and sold over the past 31 years. We employ over 2,700 people. We are in the health, energy and retail sectors of commerce. We have attrition rates below 3%, one of the lowest in all of these industries. We maintain a high level of delayering to improve our efficiency and costs. We, as have many other industries, have decentralized with revenue gains in double figure percentages for the past 12 years.
Through the past 3 recessions, prior to our current recession, we hired. Today we are in a 28 month hiring freeze. Regulatory and tax uncertainty has forced us to sit on revenue profits. Profits have begun shrinking due to recent regulatory changes from the current administration and effects of the Bush administration changes. Estimates of increased overhead costs of more than 12% due to these possible government actions have caused it all. We retain 3 accounting, legal and consulting firms to manage the morass of regulatory and tax changes that happen literally on a daily basis. The cost of expanding this and other overhead costs have forced us to stop any foreseeable growth.
Although we are a large business we are still small compared to the real "mega-corporations" as you like to call them. I'm sure you use many of those mega corporations out of necessity and also convenience. The free-market gives you this benefit, but remember, your use of them is reason for their expansion. Walmart, GE, Ford, AT&T and others only respond to market forces, as do we. These market forces are being intruded more and more by government. One recent regulatory change in our energy sector has created a potential cost of over $3 million dollars with no benefit to our revenue stream or to the environmental concern the regulation supposedly affects. Who do you think will bear the brunt of that expense? I can guarantee you it won't be our company or our employees. It will be you, the consumer. As always, increased costs will be trickled-down to our customers. If there is no profit in the regulatory change we can't increase our profit-sharing, or ROI to investors, but we are forced to maintain our payrolls. The net gain is zero with increased cost to the private sector.
I can go on but I think you understand, I hope. I create commerce. Businessmen do. Entrepreneurs do. Investors do. Your obvious fear or disdain of mega corporations is typical of the Liberal mentality. Remember, Ford Motor Company didn't always have 160,000 employees. He started with about $30,000 and a handful of investors. Sam Walton’s first store in Bentonville did not employ 2.1 million people in 1962. Both these men responded to market forces that allowed expansion and profit either by innovation or strategic marketing. Yes, they are businesses. Yes they create commerce. One in manufacturing (auto production) and the other in service (retail). They both bring revenue from domestic and international profits.
Do you think most businessmen, investors or entrepreneur’s dream of creating a business that is barely solvent or a multinational conglomerate? Either way, they have to have a pathway to allow them to simply begin their business. When government intrudes, that pathway is much more difficult. In a recent interview with former HomeDepot founder, Bernie Marcus, he explained it brilliantly. He was asked if he could build his company today as he did in 1978? His answer was, "Today, a CEO cannot make a decision without having groups of lawyers helping him make the decision". This is the problem. I doubt you or anyone else can create a new Home Depot or Lowe’s. But you should be able to.
So yes, I do have an ideal image of business. One where I don't have to pore over pages of regulations that are redundancies, excesses or outdated. One where I don't have to hire an army of tax consultants, accountants, lawyers and advisors. One where I don't have to worry about Sarbanes-Oxley. One where I don’t have to worry about another futile attempt by government to run health care. One where I don’t have to worry about the impact of Dodd-Frank on my bank loans or line-of-credit. One where I can create more jobs, more wealth and more prosperity.
Get the government and all their special interests, rules and regulations off our backs and we will create jobs. Until then we will be forced to sit on our profits until we know what the next surprise Washington decides to drop in our lap is.
Obviously you don't own or never ran a business. It’s a shame you gave up your attempt to climb the corporate ladder. This is typical of many who later complain about upper management. You may have to ki$$ some a$$ to get to the top but that’s the only place you’re going to affect any change. I did.
You and the general public just think we sit around and bushel loads of money fall magically from the heavens and we all go prancing to Macy's or, as you so eloquently claimed, ride around on our yachts and hang around in country clubs. I don't. Your boy Barrack Husseins “Jobs Czar”, Jeff Immelt, may do that, we don’t. We have over 175 employees that just take care of financing, legal, HR and compliance. Are we just supposed to hire 300 people and hope that the effects of all this massive regulation will not affect our profits so we can keep 2,700 employees paid? What if the costs will be twice as much or 3 times as much as we forecast? We know it won't be less, only more.
It has nothing to do with what you liberals, who have never run a large or even small business, like to portray as "squeezing your shoes". It's called planning your business future. We have been in business for 31 years, we'd like to be around for another 31 years, but we won't if we don't know what the government has in the pipeline. After this election we will have a better idea of our fiscal situation. A number of significant changes will be happening between now and and Jan. 1, 2013. We are responsible for more than 2,700 employees with an additional 3,207 lives (family and dependents). Every single new hire is evaluated to make sure it doesn't affect our ability to keep our current employees, grow and make a profit.
Simple enough? Patriotic enough?
BTW, I met David Koch at a PBS fundraiser 2 years ago, he sponsors the NOVA series. Yes, we conservatives do support PBS and Big Bird, we just don't think the government should. Koch has contributed $7 million to PBS. This is a pittance compared to the billions he has contributed to medical research (he supports stem-cell research), the arts and education. He also supports gay marriage, legalizing marijuana and eliminating victimless crime laws.
to every mixed breed out there that is American understand this, you are only an American because of a piece of paper we gave you, the real American's are born here and Obama was not and now we true American's are going to lose the shirt's off of our back's to these mixed breed terrorist, so when you say Obama is your president you are right...but to call this country yours... that is a sad mistake it will never be yours or his no matter how much we lose to you messed up people, you will never be one of us and that is you're greatest flaw. so when others complain about Obama you better hold it in because he has no right to be here and no right to be the president there for others have a right to complain about the terrorist, now if any of you mixed breed's dislike the truth then i would like to give you a bit of Advise, GTFO of OUR! COUNTRY!
ANYWAY....Back on topic...I haven't had a twinkie in about a thousand years. Although it's sad to see them go, it's not something I'll lose sleep over.
Hey Angry, unless you are NATIVE AMERICAN, this country is not yours either. Get a freaking clue, you sound like a village idiot!
funny thing republicans, when our GM became mostly china owned ,you called it free markets. when japan took a major share of the auto trade, you called it "free markets". when half the pharma companies became "multi-national, you called it 'free markets' etc etc. so what changed your mind about 'FREE MARKETS'""""????????????????? BEFORE REPUBLICANS DEREGULATED EVERYTHING IN THE NAME OF FREE MARKETS, COMPANIES LIKE SONY COULD NOT OWN RADIO STATIONS, NOW THEY OWN THE MAJORITY OF THEM. FREE MARKET THIS BUTT HEADS. Go back to your angry little world.
Nothing changed our minds.
What changed was your perception of free-markets.
Your ignorance is obvious when you make statements like, "when japan took a major share of the auto trade".
Took?
Japan "TOOK" a major share of the auto trade? Where is it written that we own any trade? What commandment is that? The eleventh?
Thou shalt not take any of America's trades?
This is the delusion you Liberals live under. You think we are and own the only free-market of the world. The free-market circles the globe. Especially today with over 7 billion people on the planet. We are 4.4% of the worlds population and you think we own the license on free-trade, or trade in general, for the whole world.
We did our job in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when we began the industrial revolution that brought unprecedented commerce to a global stage. After WW II we had 30 years of wealth, prosperity and a standard of living unheard of in history. After we rebuilt our own economy and ruined nations rebuilt around the world the real free-market began. A global free-market.
Now I know you Liberals believe we can just exist on our little chunk of real estate and keep borrowing money to build more infrastructure, hire more government workers, create a whole new energy sector for our massive needs, slap some convoluted tariffs on everyone and live a protectionist lifestyle reminiscent of the 1930's. Read up on the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act if you’re so convinced.
GROW UP!
The days of illiterate, unskilled, untrained, bobbleheads making $70,000 plus benefits a year are long gone. The auto industry is no more ours than pizza is Italy's. We live, and will continue to live, in a global economy. This is the future of the 21st century. You can look at the 6.7 billion people outside our borders in one of 2 ways.
1). As competition.
2). As consumers.
Neither is bad. Competition and consumers are what drive the true free-market. We have and will continue to benefit from both. GM is mostly China owned. We borrowed the money for TARP to bail out GM from China. We bailed out Chrysler with borrowed money and then sold it to Fiat. WE do not own any rights to the "auto trade", the whole world needs cars. We do not own any rights to the "pharma trades" either. The whole world needs medications.
Free-markets do not understand borders or boundaries. We don't want to be competing with emerging markets to make tennis shoes, toasters or underwear. We want to be competing in the sciences, engineering, innovation and technology. Unfortunately we allowed our criminal government to hijack our education system and now we graduate illiterates that read at an 8th grade level for over 30 years. This has set us back at least two generations. Today we have illiterate parents trying to help their children not become illiterates. Not a good formula for success.
You Liberals have to stop fearing the mean, nasty, corporate bogeyman. Globalization, outsourcing as well as insourcing, will be the future. The more you fear it the more mediocre you will remain. Get educated, don't hope that some corrupt union thug cares more about your future than you do, create commerce by yourself and you will succeed.
If you believe leading from behind is successful you have been fully indoctrinated. If you believe America is exceptional and offers you equal opportunity and NOT equal outcomes you have a chance. If not, let Barrack Hussein and his cabal of elitists keep telling you how the best you can do in life is to just be middle-class.
Real Americans believe we can be more than that.
Much more.
It's amazing, the vicious diatribe spewing from uneducated, low paid workers who obviously are more comfortable living a very modest life... so long as misery loves company, so to speak. They are so groomed by the talking heads at Faux News and Lush Rimballs that they hate the mention of a comsumer protection agency or a labor union. They profess to love this country and yet are the very cause of it's demise. As our government evolves into a supposed capitalistic oligarchy, as it will be, enabled strictly by those so ignorantly driven to the cause by pure hatred and racism for anything or anyone they don't understand. Do you people NOT get the American Dream was a concept in our not so recent past, whereby with initiative and determination you could expect to achieve a livable income with benefits that protected you and your family from the disasters and tragedies life holds for all of us? Do you reconcile that you are not worthy of the same basic human needs and desires to allow yourselves a decent lifestyle? Or are you just happier knowing that 1 or 2 percent of the U.S. population can have that, while you slave away for your lives, however short that may be? Could you stop and think for a moment that labor Unions and President Obama are two of the only proponents in this society who are backing what SHOULD be your cause? To regain some semblance of equity in the difference from your lifestyle and that of a very small minority who have run this country into the ground. A minority not based on race or gender but one that is compelled by sheer greed and the lust for power. You redneck, racist Fox-fed Republican voters had better wake up... or this country will continue to change and not to your benefit.
To JimSpence. I would like to commend you on being logical and concise. You clearly are not unintelligent. But with that said. I have to say this. There are liberal businessmen. There are companies that have grown and flourished both under Obama, Bush, Clinton and other presidents under more regulations and more rules. The reason for those regulations and rules is a changing system of markets. The reason for the corporate regulations is because various corporations have in their time performed various actions that have cheated their employees, their consumers, and their own company. Have all the companies? No. But some have, and that means that others must suffer their burdens to assure that they don't do it as well.
Are all the regulations needed? Perhaps, perhaps not. But most of them are because of the dozen or so corporations that helped collapse this company under Bush's lack of regulation. Perhaps the reaction is an overexaggerated reaction, but that however remains to be seen. However, let's look at this particular instance. The employees were asked to take a pay cut of 8% and pay 20% extra to Healthcare from their paycheck. That's a 28% decrease in the money they were making. Most of them were likely making slightly above a living wage. They were asked to reduce that wage by 28% because the company was having difficulties. On the surface that sounds ok. But what about the executives? Now I don't know how much the executives at Hostess make... but I know the last CEO retired on over 3 million dollars. Even if the Executives aren't making that. They did not take a single paycut. Not a one. They were not asked to reduce their pay. Actually, from most reports I can find, they increased their pay while asking their employees to take a pay cut. How is that fair? Why should the workers take the burden while their employers refuse to shoulder any of it themselves?
I am not a liberal. I am not a conservative. I ascribe to know political system of belief. I think Obama is a mediocore presiden who has fallen under such scrutiny only because he followed behind Bush. Now half the country sees him as the savior and the other half sees him as the devil. It cannot be helped.
Now that all the people screaming and whining about unions is over, let's look at the hard facts of why this happened.
Reports have suggested that Hostess has had a revolving door of CEOs marching in through the past decade. These CEOs have seen larger pay, and one of them even cashed out with a ton of money... yet Hostess was refusing to pay benefits such as pension to their workers. The workers demanded what was in their contracts, the things they had originally signed up for. Hostess was shoving the worker's money in benefits into the hands of their executives.
For all the apologists or the ones grubbing at shallow memories of sugar and lard... just shut the heck up. The original creators of these institutions died a long time ago, they're managed by new people now who run the companies into the ground thinking it's all about record profits and shiny new cars. Not in building customer/company trust, in building a brand, faith in a product, and a happy working environment where they are productive and being profitable. They want to see huge numbers, rather than being happy with the fact they're succeeding in a depression.
You may worship and excuse their greed. I don't really care anymore. Frankly, I'm tired of hearing it. Also, keep the Obama talk down. You have plenty of forums where they're discussing Obama. The way you talk of it, Obama is God, for he can giveth, and he can taketh away, apparently. Even though the majority of the power is in the hands of Congress, all he gets to do is say yes or no...
This is the work of Mayor Bloomberg. He's now trying to stamp out obesity amongst truck drivers. He started with the 16 oz. coke in NYC and now he's going national. His next move will be against Dunkin Donuts who caters to fat cops.
To you repub/tparty trolls. Please show us that you're serious and follow the new twinkie company to mexico. We certainly don't expect you to stay here, with a Black, Second-Term Elected by Popular AND Electoral Vote, President Obama who has given you more quality to your life than you deserve. Moving companies are offering discounts. I bet there are many of us who would contribute to your moving costs. Your ignorance, or is it stupidity, will tempt you to stay, but don't. Tequila and drugs are waiting for you. Hoping that you receive the same treatment from the Mexican people that you gave. And just think, you might learn more swearing words to use while their backs are turned, as is the cowardly way of you trolls.
Okay, so you're an educated, arrogant, hypocritical condescending elitist. Now go cash your welfare check and spend it on the last box of Twinkies.
You people are so polarized you can only see the side of the equation backed by your respective masters. Union is best, Corporation are best, please. How about this, no matter what side of the aisle they are on, what platform they espouse, they all have one thing in common. If they're mouth is moving, they ARE lying to you.
You liberals may be shocked to find that are as many democratic billionaires as there are republican. And they are not forthright and above board on either side. Your precious Unions, those bastions of worker rights are as bad as any corporation because they are one. They are self serving and all to willing to sell out the members for a price. As a retired member of the BC&T-GM local 218, I can tell you first hand. The business agents and local presidents are just another form of white collar criminal. But then, all those FBI investigations into Union corruption and racketeering in unions are all fake, right? I withdrew in good standing from the BC&T-GM twenty years ago because of ineffective representation by the union.
I started my own business and the people who work for me make a good living and have benefits, all without paying someone else to not represent them. And thanks to to the hysteria created by the left, my profits have never been better, the left is the best sales person i never hired. As to Mike in AZ comments. Consider you now have four political flavors, Democrats, Independents, Republican and tea party. Now form an acronym and you get D.I.R.T. A more fitting acronym I've never seen. No matter the party, if you want to see where a politicians loyalties truly lie, check their portfolios. These are not nice people, they are thieves, liars, con men and scoundrels, pure and simple. And that includes Mr. "O" who posted an Adjusted personal federal income of $1.7 millions dollars. When was the last time you reported earnings of more than five times your salary without a visit from the IRS? Anyone?
No my brainwashed Brahmin country men, all the division is by design, as long as they can keep people arguing about politics, race, money, then few are watching them. And these people bear close scrutiny. Elections are not so much about party as they are trying to pick the lesser of the evils you have to pick from. As they are all liars.
Mr. "O" has been re-elected, so now it's all on him. No more excuses, no more blaming the previous administration, if he gets nothing done it's because he is ineffective and inept. As I always thought. Who among you outside Chicago can honestly say they knew his name before '08? It has nothing to do with his race, whatever that is, since he is as much white as he is anything else. So all this first "black" president nonsense is as false as everything else about him. Like all Chicago politicians. So follow blindly those who do not have your best interests at heart if you choose. You have the Constitutional right to be idiots if you chose. But, don't whine about how the other party has caused this, it is you the people and you're blind loyalties to blame. Try looking at these,,, people?, without your party blinders. You will be depressed at what you see without the rose colored glasses.
China has already bought up half of the U.S. so Mexico should just walk in and finish us off.
Anyway, Hostess products should be used as weapons in Afghanastan as they are so chemical laced they are not even real food. Just lob some Twinkies, Sno Balls and Ho Hos to the opposing forces and we could win any war.
When I allow myself junk food which is rare--I have to have a pink Hostess Sno Ball. When I was in junior high, I bit into a Hostess cherry pie and bit into a rust colored powdery substance that tasted terrible. To this day I don't know what that was and I guess I don't want to find out. It was disgusting!
Really wouldn't miss Hostess too much. Now, give me a organic apple and we are talking yum, yum.
This thread needed to be collapsed.

Let me ask you this.
Why?
Why must others suffer the burdens of unscrupulous companies? Why should my durable medical supply company suffer the consequences of those companies that allow the waste, fraud, abuse and corruption (WFAC) that lawmakers think they can regulate out of existence? Because we have a Code of Federal Regulations that is over 144,000 pages long and growing. No crime has ever been prevented because of a law or regulation. The recent revelation by the Institute of Medicine exposed the fact that despite mountains of regulations our health care system loses $750 BILLION a year in WFAC! How many more hundreds of thousands of pages of regulations will it take to eliminate this massive amount of taxpayer dollars being lost?
In my opinion, none.
Why? Because our convoluted government doesn’t understand commerce. We have legislatures comprised primarily of lawyers and academia’s elite who have never created or run a business. Sure, they claim to surround themselves with the brightest and best in the fields concerned, but these are usually special interest groups that benefit the politicians or certain crony industries in their constituencies.
I’m not that familiar with the bakery industry, but I have spoken to officials in that industry. The problems that Hostess had are myriad. Most importantly, they, and others, work with razor thin margins. The reason is NOT CEO salaries, it’s our governments constant intrusion into the free-market. In this case, the problem is the sugar cartel that is centrally planned from Washington.
We’ve all heard of the atrocities of our farm subsidies programs. In my opinion there should NEVER be a subsidy of any type. Government can be supportive of established industries without just throwing good money after bad at start-ups in the hopes of them becoming successful. They can do this with incentives to the private sector with much less risk than we see happening at GM, Solyndra and hundreds of small banks and financial institutions affected by government.
Hostess, as are similar brands that are dependent on sugar, is under the control of a few “select” sugar cartels that keep sugar prices artificially high, typically two or more times higher than prices on world markets. The federal government does this by setting guaranteed prices and then backing them up with trade restrictions and production quotas.
These free-market intrusions benefit the beet sugar and cane sugar producers but damages consumers and U.S. food companies. Why do you think the cost of cereal and candy products have more than tripled in the past two decades? It’s not because of inflation alone. When you have to pay more than three times what you did for a box of Honey Nut Cheerios, and get less volume also, there are significant factors contributing to these costs.
Yes, it seems Hostess had management problems. This is why I, and many others, believe unions have a fiduciary and industry responsibility to work with these companies to improve. The days of hammering out the best deal for the rank and file and disregarding the long term effect on the company must end. The long term viability of industry is imperative to our economy improving. We can no longer embrace the Keynesian nonsense of government being the benevolent redistributors of wealth. It’s too corrupt. We can no longer accept that we are a consumption/service sector economy. Not when we import more than $600 billion of goods than we export. Not when we have fallen to third place, behind China and Germany, as an export nation.
Our “free-trade” agreements are a farce. NAFTA is 2,000 pages long and 900 pages are tariff rates! How can we call it “free-trade” when half is tariffs? This is no more than managed-trade. The king of managed-trade is the WTO. This 29,000 page behemoth is a bureaucrats wet-dream come true. All these pages say little about deregulating trade, its initial intent, but they regulate just about everything else. From minimum wage protections to clandestine price controls to anti-dumping laws, control was more important to the bureaucrats than significant trade reform.
Surprisingly, the most simple comprehensive true free-trade policy resides in our own Constitution. In Article 1, Section 9 it states:
If you replace the word “State” with “Country” you have the perfect free-trade agreement. Unfortunately bureaucracies abhor simplicity and we end up with thousands of pages that benefit certain individuals or industries not economies. I think these 54 words explain and define true free-trade better than any thousand page "agreement".
Hostess has been fighting an uphill struggle for years. This is not simply a management vs. workforce problem. Our government is just as implicit in the demise of many of our industries. Until we realize that our government is Constitutionally mandated to provide 18 simple Enumerated Powers, no more no less, we will continue to see our industries deteriorate. Government intrusion is a much bigger problem than what we see in front of us, it’s what we don’t see and don’t understand that is hurting us.
Today we have lost another iconic brand of Americana to forces that should have never been involved. Regardless of your beliefs this should be a concern.
Wrong.. Time to put more blame on the GOP for purposely trying to continue to sabotage the economy and crush labor and the middle class. We'll be trying to get out of the Bush hole for the next 20 years with economic traitors like this.
jim spence-BTW, I met David Koch at a PBS fundraiser 2 years ago, he sponsors the NOVA series. Yes, we conservatives do support PBS and Big Bird, we just don't think the government should. These are the same Koch brothers whose father was a semi-Nazi and founded the fascist John Birch Society infamous in the 60's. And they themselves helped found and funded the Tea Party. But to go to your other point.I wonder how they square their (if its true) support for gay marriage, legalising marijuana, eliminating victim-less crime laws, and supporting stem-cell research. With there vast monetary support to a party that is 100% against all those issues.
All I can say is "Holy Crap" because I have never seen such huge flow of uninformed, made-up, hyperbolic bullshyte ever!
Uncle Bob 512
Bob, you need to get out of momma's basement more often. Stop reading the Huff-N-Puff Post, the New York Slimes, Mother Jones and my favorite distortion rag, Rolling Stone, especially the Matt Taibbi propaganda. David Koch is a Libertarian. He left the party in 1984 and has been a Republican since but his policies are still predominantly Libertarian. Of course I'm sure your DNC talking points memo probably never informed you of that.
Your other talking points memo's didn't inform you that the TEA Party is more Libertarian, in essence, than it is Republican. Taxed enough already, Constitutionally limited government, fiscal responsibility and free-market principles scream Libertarian much more than they do Republican or GOP. Of course all you do is just parrot the nonsense from your Liberal/Progressive comrades blindly following without any independent thought.
As far as your "semi-Nazi", meme, whatever that means, perhaps you should have the same disdain for George Soros and his "semi-Nazi" underpinnings, no?
BTW, Robert Welch Jr. founded the JBS.
Try to keep up Spanky.
Now...help me out... how many CEOs does a company need...how many bonuses should said CEOs get when the company is failing...how many workers losing thier livelyhood and work should outweigh said CEOs getting thier bonus (not just normal salary)....this is a shameful thing for our country....
I am NOT buying a twinkie named BIMBO! It would make me feel like a john! Do they not know that a Bimbo is a complete sleaze? My kids and I tease every time we see one of their trucks, "Look Ma, there goes a truck full of bimbos"! Ew. Will never buy their products! It would be like trying to buy a binder full of women.
Sorry to say but you prob purchase a lot of products. sara lee, stroughman, entenmanns, ballpark, boboli, thomas...these are just a few of the companies in their stable, so chances are you have been buying their products for quite some time now.
Well that comment it itself is very Bimbo...way to teach your kids discrimination! Duh...
actually its pronounced beeembo. not bimbo. that brand has been around for a while now.
Thumbs up, if they do not have anyone buying it will be a moldy twinkie. Dollor stores will carry the product, watch the name brands when you shop there. Proud to be in a union.
I don't care what company buys Hostess. The quality is not what I grew up loving about their treats. The bakery jobs will be in the U.S.And for those who were speed reading, the article states that Mexico has an advantage of lower sugar prices. It's not unions killing our American companies,it's the tariffs.
WOW. Anyone calling the union members greedy really doesn't have all the facts. Union agreed to HUGE concessions during the last bankruptcy a few years ago. The corporate leadership at Hostess flat out admits to being fiscally irresponsible and making bad decision after bad decision since those concessions and bankruptcy. Despite the first BK and tough times due to the public becoming more health conscious, Hostess TRIPLED it's CEO's salary, and doubled many others. They practically looted their own company. The union did its part to try to help - Hostess NEEDS to die - the leadership there SUCKS, and the workers deserve to work for a better company. It's playing out exactly as it should.
Go do a little reading some place other than this site before you jump on the "greedy union's fault" bandwagon...
I've got 1000 packages of US made Twinkies down in my bomb shelter. They are good until the year 4012.
While the Union workers may not be all that greedy, the Unions leadership is. Unions started as non-profit organizations to help workers who were being barely paid while companies made huge profits from the employees' work, and because of extremely hazardous work conditions. Now the big Unions are making huge "profits" from the Union members and companies.
When is the last time you heard a Union president announce he would not take any pay or benefits while the members were on strike? The Union leadership is always paid, even when there is not enough work for the members.
On average, the top Unions leadership pay and benefits would employ 100-1,000 (depending on the Union you look at) members.
Unions also over-price a lot of jobs. Unions charge companies in my State twice to three times the going rate for Plumbers alone. The local Union to me has several "Plumbers" (I use quotations because the individuals are the worst plumbers I have ever met) that are so bad that they need to be banned from installing any plumbing. They are barely good enough to carry my tools let alone call themselves Plumbers.
So yes, Unions are helping ruin America. If they really cared about the members, they would represent the members for free and reduce the cost of using Unions.
Why should a Union member who knows practically nothing be paid $35.00 per hour? Just because of his title?
It is time Union members wake up and start checking out the Union they are in. Look at how much money the Union takes in and how little of it directly benefits the members it is collected from and for.
Look at how many members are protected from being fired even though they either don't produce or make the job dangerous for others.
And look at how Unions harass members who are laid off (no work) when the member finds a job outside of the Union. The Union does not care that the member needs to feed his family, only that the member is "taking work away from the Union" (that is an actual quote from a local Sheet Metal Union to a member).
If Union members were paid normal wages, the prices of goods and services would be lower and everyone would be able to stretch their hard earned dollar further.
Unions have outlived their usefulness. There needs to be new guidelines placed on unions that keep them from getting involved where they are not needed, and keeping the union bosses from getting fat on dues. Unions should be run by the members, with a President serving a two year term, with pay on the same scale as its members. They have priced too many companies out of competition, and out of business. Its also very sad, and should be CRIMINAL that union power workers stopped workers from coming north to help restore power after hurricane Sandy. How the law allowed those IMMORAL JACKASSES to stop people from getting faster relief just pisses me off. I also have friends that work with networks like ESPN setting up stages in remote locations for special events. In towns where union workers are involved, my friends do 90% of the work, they get half of the pay, and in most cases, the contractor is forced to pay for three union workers when only two are on the job! HOW IS THIS LEGAL? HOW ARE UNIONS ALLOWED TO GET AWAY WITH THIS??? Its time to break the unions while we still have a country left!
The journalists and analysts reporting on this story are mostly clueless idiots. If and when Bimbo buys Hostess, a large majority of those jobs will go to states like Texas, where Bimbo Bakeries USA runs numerous LARGE operations.
This nation(USA) is filled with idiots. Nearly every single job that could be outsourced in America has already been outsourced, including those at Hostess. If Hostess could have profitably ran ALL of their operations from Mexico, they would have done so LONG ago.
Furthermore, much of the trade currently being done with Mexico will take a critical hit once the Fedaral Government closes the loophole in the NAFTA aggreement which allows Mexico to currently enjoy open truck deliveries into the U.S. The Teapublican party of no have been blocking actions against it, but those (and their) days are coming to an end.
Well Bimbo go ahead and buy Twinkies don't eat them now and sure won't eat them when they are being shipped here from Mexico are they planning on smuggling drugs in with them?
I knew this country had gone to hell but a damn mexican twinkie. Son of a bitch!!!
Dear republicans. when GM became a mostly china owned company, you called it "free markets. when japan took a major chunk out of the auto industry you called it "free markets. when deregulation by republicans made it posible for sony to buy up radio stations, you called it "free markets". When most big pharma became 'multi-national" you called it free markets. SO WHAT HAPPENED? NOW YOU DON'T LIKE FREE MARKETS ANYMORE???????? IF THIS COUNTRY IS KICKED TO HELL, IT'S GOT YOUR FOOT PRINT ON IT'S BUTT. this is the deregulation that Nixon worked so hard for, that Reagan worked so hard for, that bush and Cheney sealed in their deals. now blame the unions instead of your fkn Free Markets,
This is part of a long long plan by Carlos "Slim" the worlds richest man to own not only cable TV, phone company, and other monopolies in Mexico, Central America, and the US...He has started buying up as many commercial baking companies as possible, and likes the unions busted up..This sale is as good as done...This feller is being aided by his hedge-fund 1% buddies and the Bain Capital types
Oh yeah, if you republicans are so unhappy with America, then move to Gaza. remember when you guys told me "america, love it or leave it"????? I do, cya bye bye. you can buy Rosetta stone tapes and learn Arabic.
wow so much negativity out there about bimbo okay you have the right to express yourselfs...free country but i here things like the word bimbo is a bad word but the word beembo is actually a little bear...if you see the lables there is little bear on the lable if you dont want to eat the product then dont hostess is a wounderfull company...yes my mom use to pack up the product in my lunch.. i loved it but i think if you give bimbo products a chance you will love it too and if they buy hostess then they will be doing all of us that like hostess a favor....and those dumb comments about drug smuggling in the products come on grow up....and those so called damn mexican you call it which there not the company not only hires hispanic but of all races as well its a good company been around for along time there products are excellent look on wikipedia for more info there also the top sponsor for many major soccer team across the glob.......,so dont be ingnorint about this company its well respected eventhough the word bimbo has been planted in your brain as a not so nice word its spelled beembo and its not a bad word so grow up people and lets start having a little more respect that is why this world is all messed up too many haters...
Why do I feel like the union bashers deliberately ignored this part of the article?
Ok...at least 99% of the rest of you ***will be able*** to go on eating your Hostess treats once another company buys the rights to these products! What about those who have tree-nut and peanut allergies? Bimbo, Sara Lee, Entenmann's, Drakes, Little Debbie, all the other commercial bakeries, every grocery-store bakery, every corner mom & pop bakery and about 99% of other bakers carry a small number of products that have tree-nuts & peanuts, but because they make ***ALL*** of their products on the same "lines", that makes ***ALL*** of their products ***UNSAFE*** - ***FOREVER***!!! At least you all will ***HAVE*** a choice to go back to buying & enjoying them! Long live ***NON-LIFE-THREATENING***, ***SAFE*** Ho-Ho's!!! ***THANK YOU HOSTESS***, for having made ***ALL*** of your products ***COMPLETELY SAFE*** and ***NON-LIFE-THREATENING*** for ***EVERYONE***!!!
So you are offended by a company name such as Bimbo and yet your fine with putting something called a "Ding Dong" or "Twinkie" in your mouth? That's hilarious.
bugsy glad to see you are proud that 18000 plus jobs are gone !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
18,000 jobs that were given to Mexico. Our company did that too, and now its gone. Way to go Hostess! When will companies learn that people are more important than $$$$$$. So damn sad.
Now those "BIG CORPORATION'S" profits will go to..MEXICO!!!!!! Way to go UNION Dirtballs.
Now, the Greedy Union Trolls want to run Wal-Mart into the abyss..
I have a simple solution that will help everyone except for the whiner with food allergies (there's just no hope for you). Why don't we buy Mexico? That way their products are our products. Border Patrol can help people cross the border while sitting in toll booths. Mexicans won't be illegals anymore because they'll now be tax-paying citizens. Jobs won't be "outsourced" when they go to Mexico. They'll have to build to the same standards as American companies so their TVs won't stop working as soon as you get them set up in your home. (Okay, that was tacky but you get the point.) Sounds like a win-win situation to me.
Ahhhhh. TWINKIES. Something America can come together on. Seems no matter what you say about them we all agree.
A very timely topic.
yes the new bimbo twinkies are a spinoff of our senate trying to enhance there retirment as they have stole everthing else.
Someone is making sure all the junk-food is going to disappear. They are going to blame it on costs and labor. You will eat what is healthy. Soda is the next target. The writing has been on the wall for a long time. When the government spends our money on commercials, and studies that are redundant as it is common sense if you eat to much sugar what happens. That has been known for hundreds of years, so why spend millions of dollars on studies?
Sugar tariffs? Maybe the lack of subsidies to big sugar in florida. The same sugar companies the US government set-up back when we stopped sugar imports from Cuba. What is worse than union? Corporate pirate.
@ just a cleaning lady post 2.5
If you think it's so bad here why are you still here? Those of you that don't like America and how we force companies to share their wealth go live in Mexico where you too can wish you lived in America and had a better life!
Hey, how many people wanna eata Bimbo anyway?
WELL! How telling is this!!
Unions, run and infiltrated by democrats, destroy another company, which maybe selling off it's products to foriegn counties.....
DEMOCRATS and Obummer ARE the ones responsible for OUT SOURCING JOBS...MORE evidence has come home to roost!
...of course neither of the above mentioned will acknowledge it, they are allergic to the truth and ANY consequences that arise from their behavior!!
WAY to go Democrats, unions and of course their favorite bedroom buddy,Barack!!
Now how do you suppose this happened. Don't suppose the company had pre-arranged this before meeting with the union covered folks do you? Naw, they wanted their workers to be happy and to get a living wage, Right!! The CO probably even agreed to give up his million dollar bonus. Such ungrateful workers!
@Charli, take a math class! Even if the CEO (not CO) worked for free it wouldn't even start to cover the problem. The company had 18,500 employees, multiply that by the amount of the proposed temporary pay cuts. You'll find it comes out to way more than any CEO makes.
Many CEO's in America make $50,000 an hour, that's based on a 12 hour a day work schedule. That means in any given day, they make what 12 average employees make in a year. That means in a year, they make what more than 4000 average employees make. So think of it, every hour, before the company can make a profit, they have to make $50,000 just to pay their CEO alone, so they have to make $600,000 a day just to pay him.
Hey Cleaning Lady, you keep on telling yourself that sugar. The unions coddle up to Obama for more stuff, he hits the sugar industry with high tarriffs, unions lose. They need to blame their Messiah, not sugar.
@TheKhanKubla: Based on an 8 hour work day that would be a salary of $104 million per year. You, sir, are an idiot
How many twinkies have to be sold to pay for the top 5 corporate officers of Hostess?
Well, the current upper management staff has been working for a $1 salary since 2 months after the current CEO's tenure started. So, like, two. Do your research. All those cuts the union took? My middle management husband's employees were making more than he was. And those benefits cuts? Took them down to what management had historically had. Not to mention that ALL of the union employees got ALL of their scheduled raises. Know how many raises my husband has had since 2004? None. But, you know, losing Christmas for my kid, our health insurance (I am ineligible for private insurance until 2014 - thank God Obama won) and my husband's salary is all worth it. Heaven forbid that some jack*** who dropped out in 8th grade should have to take a 8% pay cut on his $35/hr. By the way, I am a card carrying-Obama supporting-baby killing-gay supporting liberal. I've just been watching all of this from the inside for the past 8 years. Heck, the bakers union steward in Peoria crossed the picket line to work, and the Teamsters practically begged the bakers to concede. Morons. Hope that principle they were standing on tastes good this Thanksgiving.
Why would someone work for $1 salary if they couldn't make a million at lower tax rates?
I did do my research Vicki, and I am truly sorry for "middle management"; however, what killed your company was a) commodity prices {CBT not wall street} b) tarriffs c) Ripplewood's investor greed d) heavy debt load e) middle management and f) above average labor costs.
I noticed you said "no raises" since 2004. My wife's compensation plan (she's in sales) reduced her compensation $30,000, twice since 2004. Yes, her comp has gone down $60,000 in the past 8 years!!!! But the prices we pay for our daily neccesities haven't gone down now, have they?
The balance between labor and capital must be maintained with clarity and purpose for a company to succeed.
Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. - Abraham Lincoln
Ripplewood was looking to reduce their labor costs by half and then expected twice the labor productivity. {The 8% cut and an increase of 20% participation rate of health insurance was just a start}
According to all the sources I can find only the pay of the top four executives were cut to 1$. After they had receive a raise of about 80% over the last year. For comparison. Most people in the working class receive a raise of cents. 15-25 cents extra an hour. Regardless of what they actually make. Some of them more but it's rare. My own raises are about 15 cents a raise. At my pay rate that's about 1% that means I would need 80 raises in one year to get the 80% raise that those executive were taking. And it was not just an 8% pay cut. But an 8% pay cut with a 20% raise in the cost of the benefits they were paying. That's a 28% decrease in pay. So how much was your husband making before being cut to 1$ salary? I'm guessing it's alot more then 35/hour. Somehow you claims also don't match the facts. If your husband hadn't received a raise since 2004 then how could he be one of the top 4 executives who had their pay cut? A pay cut that was largely symbolic and wasn't a cost cutting measure but was done purely to try and increase employee and employer relations?
The fact is this the company was failing, the strike stressed the company but even without it, the company would have eventually failed without serious changes to it's management who were operating poorly by all acounts of everyone. Employees, management, business reviewers, forbes, and news outlets. All agree that the company had some serious mismanagement issues.
Lyson - "And it was not just an 8% pay cut. But an 8% pay cut with a 20% raise in the cost of the benefits they were paying. That's a 28% decrease in pay"
Sorry Lyson but that's not actually true. The benefits were probably 12-18% of the wages (even at $500 / month going to $600 per month, which is the 20% increase) that would actually mean 20% times 18% (on the high end) which equals around 4% of the total wages for a combined decrease in pay of around 12% (8% +4%).
Regardless, and in the end, the investor and executives have simply become too greedy.
Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. - Abraham Lincoln
Hostess has had financial troubles for years. High labor costs , high materials costs, healthier diets especially for kids. The strike was just the last nail in the company's cofin. I have not eaten a Hostess snack for at least 15 years. I won't miss the products, but it is sad to see another iconic American company fail.
What really astounds me is the attitude that companies are in business to give jobs to people. People start businesses to make money, and generally they want to earn more that they would make just going out and working for someone else. Investors invest in companies that exhibit a certain amount of profitability weighted by the risk. Don't get me wrong, having a good work force is important, but a job is not a right. A job is an agreement between a company owner and an individual that needs to raise their own capital to subsist.
If a company is not profitable, investor don't invest and people don't care to waste their time operating a business where they cannot earn what they expect. Too many Americans are too ingnorant, uneducated or just plain unintelligent to comprehend this. American workers are losing jobs because they no longer can compete with much of the rest of the world.
I have not eaten any of that Hostess glut-food since I was a child.
Is that why you are so angry and uptight
I hope the members of the Bakers Union can buy bimbo's with food stamps!! Know what's even better is thanks to greedy union members Illegals will be baking twinkies for $4.00 hr. + Obamacare!
I don't know what would be worst---twinkies made in China or made by Bimbos!
In China of course!!!!!
Only a fool would eat something made in China...they sell pet products that kill our cats and dogs.
better not buy apple or donald trump ties, they are made in china
Bimbo's makes quality products.Further more products made in Mexico, take Coca Cola for example, are made with sugar and not high fructose corn syrup.Mexican products are not full of fillers and preservatives either.
I am kinda looking forward to trying a twinkie covered with cheese, salsa and guacamole! ;-)
Mexico too, has it's drawbacks. Most workers don't wash their hands or get proper bathroom time. Female workers at Nabisco wore diapers because the boss wouldn't let them go till break. Maybe that's why they put so many chemicals in Twinkies, to kill the bacteria and insects, not for shelf life.
@Re Wf... and beans
Only worth $135million!!! Damn I'd buy this company. Somebody get Oprah or Diddy on the phone!
Hope I win one off the big lotteries before the sale goes through.
All unions should be dissolved. You dont need them anymore. There are laws that protect the worker nowadays. All unions do is make things extremly expensive and the people in charge rich.
Unions keep employers from paying zip wages; but they always go overboard to the extreme.
haha, if you believe that, then I'd love for you to come work for me. Work ya for the next 20 years at the same salary you started with. Hell I'd even make you take a pay cut in 3 years, because well just because I could.
@Agent Smith-3219393, so how many people have you got working for you? I'm betting none, and you never will, because you're an idiot with no understanding of business!
Agent, I'm smart enough to go find another job rather than let you try to take advantage of me. And that is why unions are archaic!
Re Wf, do you honestly think you could quit your job and just walk right into another one in today's economy? Lots of luck. I'm assuming Agent Smith-3219393 is just trying to make a point, and he is absolutely right and going by your comment, I can see why you couldn't figure that out. There are very few companies left that are willing to pay their employees a livable wage. You are right about the unions being archaic, but the reason for that is because there are so many dip@!$%#s running around in this country who are gullable enough to believe whatever the rich people tell them.
Union workers want to be paid for nothing.
My husband did worked on a boiler at a union head light factory plant years ago. The workers filed a grievance against their employer and wanted to be paid for the same as the boilermakers where paid. They did nothing to fix the boiler and they couldn't because they wouldn't have a clue how to fix the boiler and they didn't have the qualifications to weld on a boiler.
So talk about being greedy, they union workers calling owners greedy is the pot calling the kettle black.
you're wrong! no you're wrong! no, you're wrong!
Really folks? a historic american baked goods company is about to fold, and all you can do is bicker and push party agenda and rhetoric?
first off, its a damn shame that over-taxation, over-regulation, and over-unionization, coupled with possible poor management decisions (possible because I am open minded, though haven't read anything to support the idea, probably just another media fed fact twist in my humble opinion) has caused yet another American company to fold. This situation seems oddly familiar, a company faced with 2 choices, cut wages or close, a strike when said company tries to do the smart thing, which KEEPS good JOBS going, and of course, the factions of this country blaming each other.
In case you can't quite place the situation, it happened roughly 4 years ago, with our auto industry. I seriously doubt that Obama will be bailing out this one though, cuz Hostess is icky, right?
Sorry, I just don't like the guy as a person, but back to the issue.
Here we sit, squabbling over the why's and how's, and generally playing the "blame" game, instead of coming together and working out ways to revive our ailing economy and restore value to our currency.
I could pick a side, play the game, like so many of you have, but personally, I think you're all friggin stupid. You've turned the most valuable and historic process this country has to offer, the ability to choose who we have running this country, into a t.v. drama series. You've turned our education, justice, and healthcare systems into bumbling, fumbling bureaucracies. Worst of all, you have all forgotten the one golden rule which has made this country a success, since the day of its founding.
"United We Stand," is not just an out dated ideal, or a catchy phrase. It is a declaration. It is a promise. Most of all, "United We Stand" is a warning, from one generation to the next, of what it takes for our system to succeed., and what will happen if we allow ourselves to be divided.
Come together, America. Help each other and the rest of us find a way. Or face the fall, and embrace the fact that you helped it along.
I find it funny how you, Duane, are objecting to playing the blame game but is in the same moment throwing out blame. You blame overtaxation, overregulation, and overunionization.. and possible poor management. Possible poor management. For the record, hostess started going under in 2004 when it had to decalare bankruptcy to get out from under it's looming debt. That was before Obama took office and at a time when regulations and taxation relatively lax under Bush. In fact, those lax rules could be why the company failed, I have no proof of this but it's reasonable that a changing market place where such fatty unnutritious foods have been growing steadily unpopular by the healthconcious consumers are to blame as well. But for the record the first time the company faced this, the union workers did concede to a pay cut at the first bankruptcy call. But were unwilling to concede to yet another one just a few short years later. Which I don't blame them. Meanwhile. every source I can find. The employees, the management, the reports from business analyst, and the news reports all state that Hostess suffered from mismanagement. I don't blame anyone for this. It happens. The company was struggling. The employees were unsatisfied with management and were being asked to give up the only things that made them want to work for the company. The pay and the benefits. The two good things the company had going for it. Mr. Rayburn was trying to make things work but it's a classic example of too little, too late. It's unfortunate that poor management, a changing market place, poor employee/employer relations, and other factors led to this companies demise. But that's life.
I don't care if they plaster speedy gonzalas' puss on the package - just gimme the golden delicious!
More jobs lost to other countries under the Obama Administration - what a shame.
once again you have no clue. bimbo honors unions and the products and made in the us. wake up and quit crying
And this is President Obama's fault how?
Think things through before you spew.
WTF does this have to do with politics jackie?!? Are your really that ignorant...really just spew whatever it was you heard on Fox this evening or read on-line. This is capitalism baby...all deep in ya. Company don't wanna pay you...they don't have to...close shop and take their ball with them. Go ahead keep crying big government..get out of our lives, I hope you get you wish one day. And when you are taken advantage by big Corps, don't be the first to cry to the govt foul. These are the kinds of comments you get from a society who puts in more time and effort to vote for their american idol or dance couple, then take an interest in their own country, and get off the arse to do something about it and stop crying waiting for others to clean up the mess.
Agent Smith a Twinkie hater.........obama killed Twinkies !
@HelpWanted, if you can tell the unions and the Obama administration apart you're doing better than most of us!
The obama administration is the same as the unions. He want to give money to lazy people that dont work also.
The bakeries and delivery of the good will stay in the U.S.
HelpWanted, you are incredibly uninformed. Sadly, you represent a majority of the people on this website, who are also extremely short on facts...
I don't know what the workers were making or what justified the prices of their products but their products were the most expensive at the store, I haven't bought a wonder bread or Hostess product for years because of its price, why pay $3.69 for a loaf of bread when the other brand is $1.39, they priced themselves out of business one way or the other if you can no longer compete you go out of business why couldn't the Union see this coming? its stupid for a union to kill jobs this way. and there is no other element to blame they had their chance to return to work now there is no work to return to just plain stupid. Job cuts in the US that have been announced this past week are approaching the 200,000 mark if you count all the defense jobs and closures and I'm afraid it will get worse. people are going to have their hours cut, more people will work shorter hours for less money we are being swapped out, there are consequences to the governments policies we are cruising towards ruin and people refuse to see what is or is not ahead, glad I'm retired but then again a collapsing economy will get all of us. reminds me of the march of the lemmings they all just blindly followed their leader, forward I think he said. ya know whats nice about this is we can all blame the republicans yes its there fault for resisting all the Democrat demands. everyone knows its liberal Democrats and socialist that build strong economies just look at Greece, Italy, Spain Portugal, Ireland and France just to name a few no problems there, I hear Germany is starting to show a little ware and tare, wow who would have thought, the UN is getting a little hungry wont be long and there will be a financial burden rising there that we will be taxed on but that's OK Obama is handling the details on that, he will see to it that we get something in return from the UN to make all the trillions they are going to want justifiable. nothing will make a difference as long as we can get cheep Twinkies from Mexico. in the mean time give 5.5 billion to each our friends in the ME that's so they won't kill each other, maybe if we gave more to the Palestinians they would stop picking on Israel, maybe they can start making Twinkies and we can establish trade with them. if they are all busy building Twinkies they wont have time to send rockets to Israel. @ Penelope2 it may as well be he is the union supporting politician.
not lost to another country they would still be made here in the usa like everything else Bimbo owns...
if you look under wikipedia it tell you more about bimbo in mexico the word beembo is a little bear that is why you see a picture of one on the lables bimbo bakeries is not a bad company you get affended of the word but for alot of people it is not so we should try to have a little more repect..and yes I love hostess grew up on the stuff but if hostess is having issues and bimbo can buy it and keep its product alive why so much hate out there its a well repected company that has many people of many races working for them so lady if you dont want to eat the hostes product if bimbo buys it dont the company is not going to going to suffer becuase of you and for the person who is races against mexican and they think there going to smuggle somthing come on grow up no wounder the world is what it is full of hate i feel sorry for you really i do cant we respect on another the world would be a better place...
CONFUSED (wonder why?) 9.1
Bimbo's profits will go to Mexico.............Thanks to the Greed of ALL union members & union officials.
Confused;
Your name fits you. Bimbo does NOT honor union contracts with companies they buy out. They don't have to. They entered into no contract with the union, therefore, they are NOT legally bound by them. Neither do other foreign companies in the U.S. such as CSM Netherlands or Unilever Netherlands, In fact they will hire new workers to be rid of any union elements. Those workers remaining from the union era, will not be union or not have their job and they will make considerably less.
So your assertion of Bimbo and other foreign companies honoring union contracts is false.
The Twinkie probably will not be named Bimbo. That is the name of the company that is interested in buying the company. The name will most likely remain as "Twinkie."
or "El Twinko"
well yeah, they are buying a name. they already make a product identical to twinkies.
Twinkies are made by the Hostess company. They also make Wonder bread.
Dee, I beg to differ... There are many products out there that are SIMILAR to twinkies, but nothing compares favorably to them, therefore nothing is identical ;-)
BTW, I have a box of Suzy Q's on my desk as we speak!
just a cleaning lady -
You do realize this article is about Hostess going out of business - the article is about a Mexican company, Bimbo, having interest in buying Hostess. Other companies have also expressed interest. It doesn't matter which company succeeds in buying Hostess, they are also buying the rights to that company, meaning the product names will remain the same.
the products will remain just the owner that will change, its amazing how the price dropped from over 500 million to under 200 million. and as a bonus the Union is out the door. it was a dumb union, they should have followed the example of the other (Teamsters) union and gave in a little those people would still be working. well now they can all find new jobs and there are so many to choose from. now we know what happens when lawyers eat to many Ding Dongs. we had a president a while back that had a thing for Ding Dongs was it Carter or Clinton? maybe it was a vice president or just someone running.
They had jobs not like millions of american...two thirds of them wanted to go back to work...the union screw thems
They're not made in Mexico.
If 2/3 of the employees wanted to go back to work they should have crossed the picket line.
I would never buy a a Hostess brand name product made in Mexico
Neither would I. EVER.
We don't need no stinken twinkies:)
then dont buy bakery products in a grocery store. they have owned companies and never changed there labels
I don't even like twinkies...I'm a cupcake guy
"¿Perhaps joo weesh to see the Donkey Show eenstead, Señor?"
I buy the Coca Cola made and bottled in Mexico at Foods Co.They are made with sugar and come in glass bottles just like the good old days.I don't care about the twinkies in the first place.I like the Ding Dongs, cupcakes and snowballs.
Bimbos the cream filling isn't what you think it is!
Mom: What are you doing?
Son: Eating a Bimbo Twinkie.
Mom: YOU'RE DOING WHAT?
Son: Eating a Bimbo Twinkie, it's like a little cream filled cake.
Mom: Oh, I thought you were talking about something else.....
I think his Mom thought he said BEEM-bo...
Will this aquisition provide jobs to Mexicans so they will stay in their own country?
hahahahaahahaha anyway this country is going down with all that fat people unable to work at the bakerys they were eating not producing
Are you trying to be funny you dumb @!$%#? Because your not. Stupid ass BITCH! I hope you stay in your on @!$%# hole, and never see the day light of eating a twinkie. AGAIN.
Are you trying to be funny you dumb sh**? Because your not. Stupid a$$ BIT*H! I hope you stay in your on @!$%# hole, and never see the day light of eating a twinkie. AGAIN.
You can only wish The Government wants all Americans on Welfare or unemployment so the DemocRATS can run this Great Country in the ground And then maybe all the Illegals will stay home because their wont be any more freebies for them I just wish we had someone with some balls to run for office that would send them all out of here and then let them come here as needed
GerardxWay, you're suspended for a day for violating #1 of the Code of Honor.
You can turn off your profanity filter here. Better than self-censoring.
Charlie.. NO C.E.O. will give up their bonus. From what I read in the newspaper, there were ten executives that still received around 80% bonus last year. Why should the workers take a huge cut in pay & lose their retirement fund?
Thats because Management earned there job and will reap the benefits
And the stupid union slugs went on strike.
OK "we have"... first, it's "their", and second they didn't earn SQUAT. They were just emerging from bankruptcy and were continuing to FAIL. They should have been updating equipment and their delivery fleet, but instead, the SORRY CEO took a 300% pay raise from 275K to 1.55M along with at least 9 other SORRY EXECUTIVES who deserved LESS, not more.
Brush up on your english, and do your research before you comment. (You too, Rex)
Because that is Obama and the DemocRATS way know they can go on Welfare and unemployment We are the Country of the FREEBIES don't you know just ask the Illegals that are here they only cost us AMERICANS Billions a year in FREEBIES
Twinkies are survival food they have a shelf life that goes fore ever, they are also great for keeping your health nothing can survive in them so they don't transmit decease's and they will stop botulism in its tracks. they have been known to cure the common cold, a friend of mine had a horse with a cancerous tumor on its neck he rubbed a Twinkie on it and the horse recovered, Twinkies are a medical wonder there better then penicillin, they are the ultimate antibiotic. I have one thats been setting in my cupboard for six years now and its as good as the day I put it there. Twinkies are the 8th wonder of the world. just like tobacco nobody knows what is in them.
Good for management of Hostess. Another bunch of union workers looking for work, Oh call Obama he will get you a job... You probably voted for him.
Obama will retrain them to clean bird crap off of solar panels!
Yes that is true they voted for him now call him and ask him for a job I am sure he will let you go on Obamas Government Welfare as he calls it and see how long it takes the union to get you a new job about never
OldDog47, only the birds that aren't killed by the windmills.
nice job union! There will plenty of workers in Mexico who will glady make the twinkies
unbelievable-dont even need to come to this country anymore to get the jobs
And spit in the batter. Take that ! Gringos.
would not be made in mexico people wake up.... they would not be made in mexico the cost of transportation and taxes and tariffs would kill them cost yopu 4 bucks for a cake then and to move them all across the states come on use on common sense, they would be made in the same bakeries that closed here in the U.S.like the rest of their products they own and make that you's don't even know about that you's think are stilled owned by a US company. and to wake you's up i would saylike 85% to 90% of your favorite food and non food items are owned by a foriegn country !!!!! so there.. also the writer of this story is wrong they would not use sugar from mexico again the cost to transport to the plants would be enormous cost they do buy their commonidies here in the US ,ie flour.sugar ect.... how do i know because i work for them and we make quality products daily and the company is commited to that and how do i know that because my job is a qulity control person now with bimbo for 6 years and many more years to come it is a good companyand they treat you well............
I am against unions in the private industry because they end up changing the basic rules of economics. I truly understand why they are needed by public workers because of the power that our corrupt/immoral politicians hold and the certainty that these politicians would try to solve all economic problems on the backs of fireman, policemen, teachers, etc. However with that said Hostess is not bankrupt because of the unions. They are bankrupt due to severe mismanagement that has been going on for years. The cost of suger had an effect but that alone was not the problem either. Hostess has refused to adjust to a changing world and ended up being left behind.
Think about your foolish statement. Unions DO NOT belong in public employee situations. You really think the tax payers should have to pay public employees union dues??? Really??? So we the tax payer can pay taxes to pay public employees union dues so a lazy public employee can lean on a shovel and get to keep their job??? Unions are dinosaurs, they serve almost no purpose anymore except to bleed businesses dry and force successful companies to close their doors. Great Idea!!! NOT!!! Hostess employees were asked to take a small cut in their pension contributions and the unions said no. Now there are 18,000 unemployed workers on the street and they no longer have jack in their pensions, nothing, nada, zip....Great going baker's union!!!! Trading something for NOTHING!!!! Fools the whole lot of you...
I have read that Hostess management made this final 5 year contract offer. 8% pay cut year one to allow the company to regroup. Years 2-3 and 4 a 3% pay INCREASE in each of those years and a 1% INCREASE in year 5. Also offered was a 25% interest in the entire company including 2 seats on the 8 member board to be occupied by union reps.
Hostess is all GMO and high frutose corn syrup which has had me avoiding them forever. I have seen Bimbo labels and they seem to avoid those. They will also probably make bigger portions. If you insist on pushing this stuff in your mouth at least it won"t be a slow kill like before.
Disparity, Please name one public union that the tax payers pay the union dues? I know in the state I live in it is against state labor laws for any municipality to pay for union dues. I suspect it is the same in every other state in the USA.
Larry, can you tell me where you got your info? I have been trying to find what were the offers and counter offers made by both sides. I am also curious to see if the workers received longevity raises besides their yearly raises. As for me that contract does not sound very appealing. After 4 years they would only be making 1% more then they are making now and when you add in the rise in health care that they would be contributing that becomes significant. Also 25% in a company that is broke might not be an enticing factor. The two members on the board is what I find very interesting. I have never been in a union but I have had friends and a few relatives that have been in private sector unions and I personally never understood what they accomplished for them accept take their money.
If we could just support our economy as well as we support the Mexican economy we would be better off.
When we re elected Obama we got just what we deserved. The House needs to keep a Lid on his spending due to the Mandate they gave the House
All spending begins in the House of Representatives not the White House so make sure that you keep a lid on the Teapublican House of spend.
You evidently have no interest in any facts or you're just not well-read.
Bushmeister began his reign of terror with a 12 trillion dollar surplus. He left with a 12 trillion dollar deficit. After four years of President Obama, our deficit increased by 4 trillion since he had duh bush mess to clean up. Now which president do you think blew the most money?
No, there are some people who didn't deserve a compassionate and caring president like the one who received the majority vote and the electoral vote. Some of you deserved what you got by the administration that stole the election a few years back.
Penepole,
You like to swallow things whole, don't you. You have certainly swallowed the U-turn leftist Obama. Gulp!
Sorry Penelope, none of what you say is true.
Interesting that you think Penelope doesn't know what she's talking about. You can read about how Obama has spent the least in places like Forbes and Bloomberg News.....but hey, those are just left leaning nuts who don't know anything about money and economics. dang.
Wow, we had a 12 trillion dollar surplus when Bush Jr. took over? That's wonderful. We could've set up a Strategic Twinkie Reserve. Do you really believe this or just hope if you say it enough some fools will believe you?
When Jr. took office the national debt was about 5.7 trillion. When he left after 8 years it was 10.7 trillion for an annual debt growth of 8.3%.
As Obama's approaches the end of his first term our debt is over 16.2 trillion. The annual growth for his first term will be ~12.5%.
There is plenty of blame to go around for this mess. But making up utterly false numbers doesn't help anything.

I would like to just point out the blatant spelling error on the front page's link to this article: "Mexican company eying treat."
Have a nice day.
They went to "Harvard".. Haha
Stop kidding yourselves, you'll still gorge yourselves on twinkies and cupcakes and ding-dongs whether it's made in Mexico or China or Mars, like a good over-consumptive American.
yea! viva bimbo!
To AF 489930, maybe you'd rather have working conditions like in Iowa, USA, a "right to work" state. If you are an adult, 18 years or older, employers can work you for a 12 hour shift, and ARE NOT required to give you any breaks or a lunch; but they do have to allow rest room breaks. Imagine my surprise when I found that out after getting hired!! It's hard to believe that can be done to legal, tax-paying, US Citizens!?!?
The uniion workers made wage concessions twice, and the company still could not make a go of it! Maybe it wasn't ALL the union workers fault!
That is why Companies are moving there operations to the "Right to work States" Thats where all the jobs are going. All the Foreign Car makers are building assembly plants there.
Ummmm, isn't Texas a "right to work" state? Before you answer that, keep in mind that it doesn't mean the entire state is lacking in unions.
You can always quit and then get a better job
Plyrr72,The federal government mandates at least 10 minute breaks after so many hours of work and a resonable amount of time for a meal break if you are a full time employee.
unions have gotton to greedy. those days are over. i dont like seeing it happen either but with cheaper imports companys cant compete with lower prices. we have companys here in states non union with lower prices. this union brought it on them selfs. yea hostess was the best an freshest but there prices were twice as high as other brands which people were buying.
You couldn't pay me enough money to eat a Mexican made Twinkie. Ole!!
One less person in line
Good, more for me!
The ownership would be mexican - other than that, the baking and delivery would still be here in the US. Maybe you'd rather support a wonderful "american" company like crApple, who not only has all their factories in friggin CHINA, but also claims all their income as FOREIGN INCOME so they don't pay taxes on it. APPLE SUCKS.
Besides, I'm all for buying american, but mexican cokes are the real deal. Coca Cola screwed up with that nasty harsh corn syrup...
I will NOT be buying Hostess brands if the Mexican based company Bimbo buy it. They purchased Ms. Baird's and the quality has been subpar since they took over because they cut the ingredients and added cheap mexican versions of ingredients to save money. All Ms. Baird's products are disgusting and I haven't bought any in years. The same will go for Hostess products if they take over. No thank you!
