French girl found tied up - but alive - in trunk after routine traffic stop

Chloe Rodriguez, 15.

Updated at 2:45 p.m. ET Sunday: During the seven days that 15-year-old Chloe Rodriguez, of southern France, was held captive, she memorized details – her kidnapper, his car, its license plate -- but she did not try to defy the man's orders for fear of being killed, metrofrance.com reported.

Chloe was found in Germany, tied up in the trunk of a car Friday afternoon after police stopped her kidnapper during a routine traffic stop, RTL.fr reported. She had disappeared the week before, on Nov. 9, after leaving her home by scooter to go to a friend’s house.

Her scooter was found six miles away with her all belongings except for her helmet.

Chloe was hospitalized Friday after being found. Her parents told reporters that she is doing well, but that she has cried a lot, according to RTL, and that she was physically exhausted.

The kidnapper, described as a 32-year-old man from the Gard region in southern France where Chloe lives with her family, was detained at a German jail in Offenbourg.

According to local news reports, the man had been released from jail in September after being convicted in May 2009 of physically and sexually assaulting six women. Those women had been, like Chloe, traveling alone on the streets of their rural community, either by foot or bicycle.

Jean-François Corral, the suspected kidnapper's lawyer said, according to midilibre.fr, that he had undergone the recommended psychiatry in prison. But he did not check in with his probation officer after his release.

He explained how his client assaulted the six previous women: He would force the victims into his car and show them pornographic images while caressing them.

“Each time that a woman would fight him, he would go away,” Corral said, according to midilibre.fr. “But he never went to the end.”

Violette Rodriguez told reporters Friday that she was elated by the news. “Today is too beautiful. There will be two birthdays for my little Chloe,” she said in French.

She added: “This man who did her so much harm -- there is justice, and justice will be rendered. But I thank him anyway, because he kept her alive.”

Chloe returned home by TGV -- France's rapid train system -- Saturday after spending the night in Germany at the police station. In the car ride home from the station, her mother, Violette Rodriguez, covered her teen daughter with a blanket to protect her. They were escorted down a small rural road by a police motorcade.

Her father, Jesus Rodriguez, told reporters that his daughter told him that she never contradicted her captor and that she had come to understand his triggers, according to lexpress.fr.

"She told us that she was able to have a dialogue with this man, and that she obeyed all his orders," Jesus Rodriguez told reporters outside their home.

Cheers erupted in the village where the family lives. Residents were relieved after a week of combing the back roads and the many abandoned stone houses that make the region seem so picturesque and innocent.

This guy really should be put to death, but they don't kill rapists either (our Supreme Court outlawed it as "cruel and unusual").

Which part of "southern France" and "Chloe was found in Germany" did you not get?

Or was it that you thought that France and Germany are US states?

Our supreme court didn't outlaw it as cruel and unusual for rapists. They decided, and probably wisely, that if a rapist will get the death penalty and so will a murderer what more would a rapist have to lose by murdering his victim and in fact might lose a witness to his terrible crime.

europe is pretty lax on prison sentences..... this guy got convicted of 6 rapes in 2009 and here we are 3 years later, trials, appeals, prison, psychiatric treatment all over and done and he's on the street doing it again....

he'd be in for 20 at least here.... or the father would shoot him a few times or run him down a few times

Here in Canada, our justice system is also lax on rape and sexual assault crimes as well. We have cases of people (like Graham James for example) guilty of hundreds of sexual assaults, and many do limited or no jail time.

These guys obviously need punishment, but the argument about life prison terms for these guys doesn't even need to be about punishment - because these guys don't feel that they've done anything wrong, and therefor don't feel any remorse or learn any lessons from punishment. Life terms simply need to be about protecting other people. These guys WILL re-offend if they are not in custody. These feelings are as natural for them, as hunger is for you and I.

This young lady is brave, brilliant and simply remarkable for doing what she needed to do in order to get through this ordeal alive.

The problem is summed up pretty clearly in this one sentence:

According to local news reports, the man had been released from jail in September after being convicted in May 2009 of physically and sexually assaulting six women.

The guy had been found guilty of raping six women and was back on the street in a little over 3 years. This guy should have been locked up for far longer, then maybe this would not have happened. Here in the US, someone convicted of six rapes is going to be sentenced to more like 20-25 years in prison. The justice system in Europe is far too lenient with these types of crimes.

Well, no excuses for deviants and crimes against women or children, but these sick people are conditioned, mistreated and socialized by someone. Ugly and nasty mothers and fathers create psychopaths that hate humanity and want to hurt and maim the weak. I believe would should put them down like rabid dogs, but that is a different issue. When you see or hear of children being mistreated step up just don't spout off on chat boards. These animals that hurt the young were not created in a vacuum.

I have daughters and granddaughters and as far as I'm concerned sexual predators like this guy should be executed. My God this animal had already been convicted of assaulting six women. With a record like his civilized society should have the courage to remove people like him from the world permanently........ We have to except some people are not salvageable and for the greater good must be killed.

I'm so glad she was found before this creep could hurt her more than he already had. I'm very happy for the her and her family.

F Walsh; the only post that is based in wisdom and sound reasoning.

Why do so many people resort to their emotions when they post? Have you noticed that the articles on the MSN web page are now split - the hard news is now linked to MSN where as the majority of articles that incite emotions are now on nbcnews.com?

The MSN articles, we can't post on, so now I'm finding I have to go to Newsvines Home-page if I want to comment on hard news stories...bit of an adjustment when MSN.com has been your home page for many many years.

I wouldn't be so quick to pat ourselves on the back...there have been quite a few cases here where such "model citizens" were given early parole and put back on the streets, only to reoffend (Jessica Lunsford's death at the hands of John Couey, a previous sex offender, just to name one). If it can and does happen there, it does and can happen here too. Just because this isn't America doesn't magically immunize us from the evils of the regular world that we are a part of.

I also don't buy the "if its a capital offense, they'll kill their victims anyway because they have nothing to lose" argument. I highly doubt that someone who commits a crime will seriously fear or care about the consequences.

J_P_Patches, FWalsh,

Actually, capital punishment is not a deterrent for murderers. Most of them don't expect to be ever caught.

You should compare murder rates in the US to those in European countries, where they don't have death penalty.

Using the death penalty for crimes such as rape and kidnapping seems excessive to me. But the article states that this man was convicted of sexually assaulting 6 women in 2009, which is only 3 years ago.

So, one has to ask, in France, what manner of heinous crime must be committed before the perpetrator is sentenced to a long jail term?

This man should be in jail for a minimum of 20 years. Chances are he won't get more then 5 years, and be out in 3.

Even if France has lower violent crime rates that the U.S., this seems wrong to me.

Regardless, I am very happy to hear that this young girl was rescued alive, and that the kidnapper was caught. That is far from the usual result for such crimes, in any country.

Peter B; I think you need to re-read F Walsh's post - he said it is a good thing rapist don't get the death penalty.

I don't support the death penalty myself - I'd rather see them suffer behind bars, killing them would remove that suffering. People think everyone else fears death - I'd fear being alive knowing I'd never be free again more than dying. People always say suicide is the easy way out, if that is so, then so is the death penalty.

Well, no excuses for deviants and crimes against women or children, but these sick people are conditioned, mistreated and socialized by someone.

Some people are born sociopaths and some are made. They can not be rehabilitated and need to be taken out of our population one way or another. It is a psychiatric illness called Antisocial Personality Disorder and is the only mental illness that is completely untreatable. With other mental illnesses, the sufferer is able, at some point, to see that their actions in some way hurt themselves and/or others. But those with Antisocial Personality Disorder lack empathy and are willing to use others to gain anything they desire. Most of them are very charming and very good at fooling people... until someone gets in the way of what they want.

I'm curious why Kevin C-752389's comment was disabled by the community.

He specifically stated that France doesn't kill rapists, and we don't either. That statement is absolutely true.

But I believe that child predators (and Chloe qualifies...she's 15) should *absolutely* be a capital offense in any country, for which the death penalty should be firmly "on the table".

Cruel? Perhaps. Unusual? It would seem to me that letting scum like this take precious oxygen (and other resources) is far more unusual...and outrageous.

How many women are kidnapping men and putting them in the trunks of their cars, showing them pornographic pictures and fondling them (especially at 15-years old). Men seem to be the problem here.

And, please no funny comments as this is a serious issue for women.

Dr Alchemy,

Huh?!?

    #1.31 - Tue Nov 20, 2012 5:15 PM EST

    DrAlchemy.

You really believe that only attractive women get sexually assaulted? And even if it were accurate, what is the point of attacking OfCourseIt'sMe based solely on your totally imagined view of her attractiveness or lack thereof? If you don't like what she said about men being the problem, why don't you try to counter her position? (Maybe she overstated a bit by blaming the entire gender, but is she wrong that men commit the majority of sexual assaults?) The fact that the best you can come up, is that she must not be good looking so she should give up her desire to be raped, says a hell of a lot more than about you (and it's not good) than it does about her belief. It demonstrates a one-dimensional and twisted view of women that's part of the problem. Or maybe she just tweaked you and all you could come up with was an insult ...

      #1.32 - Wed Nov 21, 2012 9:57 AM EST

Why are you calling it rape? Fondeling breasts without penetration is lewd and lesivious behavior , but its not rape.....Sexual assault it is but in US this guy would have saw very little time for that act....The kidnapping on the other hand, well......Seriously, read the article first...."

He would force the victims into his car and show them pornographic images while caressing them.

“Each time that a woman would fight him, he would go away,” Corral said, according to midilibre.fr. “But he never went to the end.”" Forcing them into his car may only have got him unlawful imprissonment instead of kidnapping as well......At any rate, he escalated and was caught....She is very lucky.....

Wouldn't a guillotine been more effective if applied the first time he was arrested? Of course if he is Muslim, this isn't even considered a crime under Sharia law. Six women! This Chloe was his seventh victim and he was released in September after being convicted of SIX RAPES in 2009. He did less than three years, less than six months per victim on average.

This is a TEXTBOOK case on why Judges should not have the ability or power to sentence felons and why we need mandatory minimums to keep these stupid criminal coddling liberal judges from endangering the public.

The man raped six women and a stupid liberal Judge thought he'd be reformed and safe to be on the streets inside of 36 months? Was the Judge even sober?

This is exactly why voters will not trust justices. They're candy ass criminal coddling worthless crap is why every time a minimum sentencing initiative is on the ballot, it passes.

Who on this planet would think that 3 years in jail is a fair sentence for kidnapping and raping 6 women? Apparently a stupid ass Judge did, and it's his fault that a 7th victim is under the rapist's belt.

mandatory sentencing guidelines are terrible.... we've got some really harsh laws for non violent crime that end up in non violent people doing more than murderers....

guidelines need to be eliminated, they are just politicians trying to be ultra hard on crime and screw with the courts....

I think it's wrong that drug use gets more than murder and rape. I also think it is wrong that people get longer sentences for shooting dogs than people. That being said, the minimum sentences for those crimes should not be reduced below that of rapists and murders, but instead the minimum sentences for rape and murder should be raised.

His comments were collapsed but I could still read them if I clicked on to them. Why aren't they completely removed? And, doesn't his name, Klansman say a lot about who he is and his mentality? How do you flag someone here anyway? I belong to a couple of blogs and they have a special button on each comment that can be clicked on to that will report that comment/person. I too hope someone visits this cretin and checks into any missing girl in his area, but I seriously doubt he is the type to actually do anything. He's probably just as ultraman said.

As for this poor girl, she was wise beyond her years for knowing what to do to stay alive. I don't know about the laws in France, but if she's his 7th victim, he needs to be put away for good. He's a serial rapist and if he does get free again, I hope his next victim had either a big gun or a big knife so she can take care of his offending appendage so he won't ever be able to use it again to rape anyone else.

Branding/Castration is a good idea. Anyone who thinks the American justice system is too lenient should go to Europe. The average sentence for murder is only 7 years with no death penalty.

Plus no death penalty over the pond.

And people complain about the USA justice system!

I'll start off by saying "in no way do I support this guy, I think he should be put away forever or put down". Now on the subject of the French or European judicial system because a lot of people here can't seem to differentiate. No where in the story does it say he was guilty of nine rapes in 1990. He was convicted of physically and sexually assaulting six women which as far as we know may have been grabbing butts in a crowded mall, who knows. The average sentence in France for "rape" is 10 -15 years and rape of a child is 30 years. There is also a sentence of "Indefinite" available in which the details of the case can't even be re-examined for a period of thirty years. So compare those with the American judicial system and see how well they stack up. And don't forget to factor in half sentences for "Good behavior" or early release because of over crowding.

They have done studies that prove castration only makes a rapist more violent and more likely to kill their victim. I read an article in the '80s about it. I used to think castration was a proper punishment until I learned that they could still rape women. Think about it- it is not a crime about sex but about power and dominence. A person can be raped without a penis being used. Repeat offenders need to be removed from the population permanantly. Of course that will never happen because criminals have more rights than potential victims.

This perpetrator once more proves that there is no "cure" for his behaviors, crimes, or violence. He is a predator who will do whatever whenever the urge strikes him. He needs to be removed from society--permanently. In Europe, it's prison. Let's hope he gets a life sentence. He has proven that he has no control, nor wish for any, and he will do harm on every chance he gets.

Let's hope the Europeans aren't as dumb as we are here in the states, where lawyers say that these monsters had bad childhoods and single-parent homes; or they were bullied and couldn't cope; or any other sorry excuse that can be dreamed up. A monster is a monster, and this monster needs to go away, permanently.

Every human on the planet is a predator, that is why there is no cure for it. The difference between the guy in this story and most of the rest of us is that we have control of our predatory nature, he and people like him do not.

It might surprise people to know that castrating someone dose not take the predator out of them. It dose not solve the control issues. Yeah, keeping people in jail is one answer, but one reason why they do not do that in the EU is because they don't have the money to do it. Speaking of money to incarcerate... The US is out of cash for that sort of thing as well. You can bet that low level offenders and people who owe support will not be incarcerated that much longer in the US. There is simply no cash left to be spending 25 to 40k a year on ea prisoner.

Unless we are willing to put everyone to death for every offense, we better start getting serous about finding truly effective treatment for people that would otherwise go to prison.

Rape is not about sex. It's about power over others and control. You are correct to note that castration would not solve the problem. Removal from society is the only cure.

As for funding the removal, we really need to look back into our past to find more solutions to these issues. We used to have chain gangs that worked the highways breaking big rocks down into little rocks. In Texas and other states, they used inmates to work in the fields and harvest crops. Are license plates still being made in the prisons? I know some of our desk furniture is. I realize this equates to "slave" labor in some circles, but the offenders need to learn something important, like paying their own way with their own blood, sweat and tears--not mine.

Europe has monetary problems, just like the rest of the world; but mindsets will change someday and reality will come to the forefront. Paradigms have a way of changing overnight.

Look at how predators chose their prey.If we did not maintain that instinct, then there would be far fewer of these types of situations. In society, we no longer hunt to survive, but for some, that instinct is still as strong as it would be in the "wild". We make a lot of mistakes in assuming that we are not still apart of the animal kingdom that we came from and the more we deny it, the more dumbfounded we get when we can not come up with civil solutions.

As to the imprisonment problem. Low level offenders and particularly those who are strung up for owning support will never pay for their own incarceration simply by working on farms and making plates, unlike in the past when prisons where cheaper to run. The base cost of a healthy prisoner is on average in most places 35k a year. This dose not include prisoners with medical issues that could cost the state 10s to 100s of thousands more a year. This cost makes sense for rapists and murders. It dose not make sense for forgers, bad check writers and people who owe support. Often times the punishment these lower level offenders get is life long. Problems finding high paying jobs and other liabilities of someone who was convicted of low level offenses are vary much punishment for these people.

When you add that prisoners can still chose not to work, you start to see the problem with mandated work in prison. I mean, really, what is the judge going to do if you refuse to work? Add more time? Well then, he is a drain on society for that much longer.

The first lop should be deterrence enough if won't happen again. Especially if already circumcised. (nerve endings and all)

There is a history of false accusations, but if rape is actually taken seriously and and can be proven without a doubt (including DNA (don't send her the bill, she's been thru enough)) there should be at least a monitored drug regiment to basically render that "weapon" inoperable. That drug regiment would also help negate the control/violence tendencies.

Well... You can at least be glad the GOP is not in charge now.

Good point! After all, the Perp IS a MUSLIM. And Sharia Law loves to lop-off offending appendages! NBC is careful NOT to give the name, race, or picture of the Perp, so I most certainly will! The rapist's name is Kamel Bousselat. His many mugshots and prodigious rap sheet already are on file. This latest monstrous attack is his 6th! ALL of his victims were raped and SODOMIZED (a Muslim male's PREFERRED method of fornication)! His previous victims were ALL NON-MUSLIM FEMALES. (See a trend yet?) NBC's "in-depth" coverage of the victim, including name, age, demographic and large photo, IS REALLY CREEPY!. It's dearth of info on the perp IS STUNNING! These type are never rehabilitated. They just toe the line until they are freed into society again. In prison they hone their murderous skills and usually kill their victims. These men should be locked away forever so they cannot harm anyone else. Once again the Liberal way of life is proved wrong.

Lighter sentences over there for that type of crime, might be the reason some of the women are found alive. Here in the states they get killed so they can't identify the perpetrator.

they get killed because the perp gets off on killing them. Europe hasn't caught up with out twisted violent culture yet--but they're working on it.

I agree with you Bob. If I was to get life for a crime I committed, I would rather get death( I think, not sure) . Anyhow, dead woman don't tell no tale and so the American Law raised the bar.

And the French who do that get off alive but then they are at risk, because there is such a thing as "on the side" of Justice, which the French Justice system does not investigate much. It sort of goes, " he was a rapist, chit happens". Voila.

You can NOT rehabilitate a sexual predator.....but you can cut their balls off, lock them up and throw away the key.

So happy to know this girl is alive. I hope she gets all the support she needs and is able to spit on him as he walks, shackled, to jail.

Hopefully there will be more to this story as I would like to know why they decided to open the trunk. Whatever the reason I am sure glad they did.

                              The article says:

"Chloe was found in Germany, tied up in the trunk of a car Friday afternoon after police stopped her kidnapper during a routine traffic stop."

Siobhan- does that mean they open the trunk at every single traffic stop? I'm not from France but they certainly don't do that in the US. I think OvertheRoad was wondering if the girl cried out or kicked the trunk.

I think the best punishment for this guy would be to force him to read all the commentary to all the news articles online all day every day for a few years.

A fate far too cruel to inflict on any criminal, even monsters such as him.

That man should never have been released from prison to begin with. God forbid we actually punish sexual predators like they deserve.

Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Why is it that such a violent horrible crime against a woman is punished so lightly?

I have to agree with dragonheart on this one. The "suspect" is convicted of raping SIX women, and gets only three years or so?

Do they not value women in France?

After raping six women, it's hard to believe the guy got anything less than life in prison with no parole.
