While reading through this whole thread, I have come up with this one impression. The far right so-called conservative tea party party has learned nothing during the last election. President Obama won by over 3 million votes, he won the electoral college 332 to 206 which is 126 more. The Democrats got well over 1/2 million more votes in congress, which admittedly isn't much, but is a majority. It means the conservative tea party right LOST seats in not only the senate but in the house as well. And still the name calling. True “free trade” should not impact outsourcing. Unfortunately we do not have “true” free trade. For an example of the simplest true free trade you only need to look at our own Constitution. Article I, Section 9 states:

No tax or duty shall be laid on articles exported from any state. No preference shall be given by any regulation of commerce or revenue to the ports of one State over those of another: nor shall vessels bound to, or from, one State, be obliged to enter, clear, or pay duties in another.

In 54 words we have the original North American Free Trade Agreement. If you simply replace “State” with “Country”, you have a perfect universal trade agreement.

Free trade equals NO taxes, duties, tariffs or other fees. Free trade requires neither complex laws nor burdensome bureaucracies. After the expansions of government during the Depression with the establishment of the United Nations, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund the world began moving in the opposite direction.

What we have ended up with is “managed-trade” rather than free trade. Smoot-Hawley and other protectionist tariff attempts during the Depression proved to be disastrous, yet true free trade was never reestablished. Managed trade with its sprinkles of protectionism has continued since.

The General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT) was supposed to be an interim agreement until the International Trade Organization (ITO), the predecessor of the WTO, was created. It lasted over 40 years. GATT did achieve some minor benefits towards free trade but they were overshadowed by deals struck away from the concept of free trade.

NAFTA is the epitome of managed-trade disguised as free trade. The most obvious reason is its size. As compared to the simplicity of 54 words in our Constitution, NAFTA is 2,000 pages, 900 of which are tariff rates!

Under true free trade there is one tariff rate—0 percent. For everyone.

NAFTA did try to reduce tariffs by 15%, however they were all but smothered under the profusion of controls NAFTA establishes. Once again, government is incapable of any realistic agreement or legislation where it doesn’t increase its own power to control. True free trade should expand the international division of labor rather than hobble it. NAFTA created numerous international bureaucracies such as its Commission for Environmental Cooperation and its Labor Commission. Both were attempts to level the playing fields among trade partners. Free trade this is not.

The reigning king of managed trade is the World Trade Organization (WTO). Developed to replace GATT, its 29,000 pages are a bureaucrat’s wet dream come true. All these pages say little about deregulating trade, its initial intent, but they regulate just about everything else. From minimum wage protections to clandestine price controls to anti-dumping laws, control was more important to the bureaucrats than significant trade reform.

Free trade means the ability of producers to exchange their wares with anyone on the globe for other goods without some government standing in the way. As we see our massive government bureaucracy expanding more and more this concept, and its attendant power, will more than likely never be achieved. Just as our needs for true free-market principles to be reinstituted are needed, the constant profligacy of government will prevent this in the name of safety and security. Thousands of pages of legislation have never shown to be effective let alone fiscally beneficial, yet the bureaucrats keep reassuring us it will, someday.

It’s time we demand that true market reforms from trade to taxes to regulations be instituted. If not thousands of more pages will be jammed down our throats with more and more government intrusion and the results will be what we have seen for decades. Massive debt, waste, fraud, abuse and corruption in our criminal government are not the solution we need.

Simpler, smaller more efficient government, as is exhibited in Article I, Section 9, would be an impressive start.

Mike, as an employer of over 600 people, we are in no way denying any of our employees health insurance. We are also in no way running from the AHCA. We understand that insurance companies have been jacking up out of pocket costs long before Obama was elected.

We offer insurance to all of our employees; part time and full. Those that do not, were tight fisted before the ACHA was even a thought and poorly prepared to provide health insurance to begin with. Employee loyalty was never a concern for them.

Also, it's not a tax. If you have insurance, like a responsible person does, you will not have to pay the penalty. So by complaining about having to pay, that must mean you're a deadbeat mooching coverage off of others, correct?

Tens of billions are paid out every year to providers scamming the government.

We are barely in the top 30 for treatment, but are a solid first is expense. Cut the corruption and greed first. That alone reduces our costs by a third.
