Subscribe to RSSThe violence continues in Gaza while negotiations between Hamas and Israel are taking place in Egypt. An estimated 100 Palestinians and three Israelis have been killed so far. NBC's John Ray reports.
Updated at 3:02 p.m. ET: GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- The leader of Hamas said Monday it was up to Israel to end the new conflict it had started, adding that a "land war" would cost Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the election.
"[Netanyahu] can do it, but he knows that it will not be a picnic and that it could be his political death and cost him the elections," Khaled Meshaal, exiled leader of Hamas, told a news conference in Cairo.
"Whoever started the war must end it," Meshaal said, adding that Netanyahu, who faces an election in January, had asked for a truce, an assertion a senior Israeli official described as untrue.
For its part, Israel said that while it was prepared to step up its offensive by sending in troops, it preferred a diplomatic solution that would end Palestinian rocket fire.
Israeli Vice Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon has said that "if there is quiet in the south and no rockets and missiles are fired at Israel's citizens, nor terrorist attacks engineered from the Gaza Strip, we will not attack."
According to a poll by Israel's Haaretz newspaper, 84 percent of Israelis supported the current Gaza assault, but only 30 percent wanted an invasion, while 19 percent wanted their government to work on securing a truce soon.
Acting as a mediator, Egypt said Monday that a deal for a truce to end the fighting could be close, as Israel bombed dozens of suspected guerrilla sites in the densely populated Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip in its campaign to quell militant rocket fire menacing nearly half of Israel's population.
Twelve Palestinian civilians and four fighters were killed in the sixth day of fighting, local officials said, raising the number of Palestinian dead to 101, the Hamas-run Health Ministry told Reuters, listing 24 children among them. Hospital officials in Gaza said more than half of those killed were non-combatants. Three Israeli civilians died on Thursday in a rocket strike and dozens others have been wounded.

Two sides exchange deadly airstrikes, rocket attacks.
Among the targets struck in Gaza City Monday was the Al Shorouq media building, which Israeli warplanes hit for the second straight day. The attack targeted a second-floor apartment used by a leading Islamic Jihad militant. He was killed and four others were injured, NBC News' Ayman Mohyeldin reported.
The Israeli military said it targeted only the floor used by the militants. “The senior [Islamic Jihad] cadre was operating in a media building. They weren’t there to be interviewed. They were using reporters as human shields,” it said on Twitter.
But the lower floors of the building caught fire, trapping journalists on the higher levels. Firefighters were trying to put out the blaze and get the journalists out of the building. The Hamas TV station is located on the top floor.
Family mourned
Thousands turned out on Gaza's streets Monday to mourn four children and five women, who were among the 11 people killed in an Israeli strike that flattened a three-story home the previous day.
The bodies were wrapped in Palestinian and Hamas flags. Echoes of explosions mixed with cries of grief and defiant chants of "God is greatest."
Israel said it was investigating the strike that brought the home crashing down on the al-Dalu family, where the dead spanned four generations. Some Israeli newspapers said the wrong house may have been mistakenly targeted.
Since Wednesday, 877 rockets have been fired from Gaza toward Israel, the Israeli military said Monday. Of those, 570 rockets have struck Israel while the country’s air defense system has intercepted 307, according to the military. Forty-five rockets were fired at southern Israel on Monday, causing no casualties, police said.
Israel's decision to step up targeted attacks on leaders in Gaza on Sunday marked a new and risky phase of the operation, given the likelihood of civilian casualties in the crowded territory of 1.6 million Palestinians.

Negotiations inch forward
International efforts to wrest a cease-fire from the two sides has intensified despite the escalated hostilities. The failure to end the fighting could touch off an Israeli ground invasion, for which thousands of soldiers, backed by tanks and armored vehicles, have already been mobilized and dispatched to Gaza's border.
Leading cease-fire mediation efforts is Egypt, which borders both Israel and Gaza and whose Islamist-rooted government has been hosting leaders of Hamas.
“I strongly urge the parties to cooperate with all efforts led by Egypt to reach an immediate cease-fire," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said before leaving for Egypt. He visits Israel on Tuesday.
European Union governments also said they supported Egyptian efforts to mediate.

On Sunday, President Barack Obama said it would be "preferable" to avoid a move into Gaza, but that Israel had a right to self-defense and no country would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr, Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby and several other Arab foreign ministers will visit Gaza on Tuesday to show solidarity with Palestinians. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu will accompany them, officials said.

Forces gather
Israel launched the current offensive Wednesday after months of intensifying rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, which continued despite the strikes.
Israeli tanks, artillery and infantry have massed in field encampments along the sandy, fenced-off border and military convoys moved on roads in the area. Israel has also authorized the call-up of 75,000 military reservists, so far mobilizing around half that number.
Overnight, aircraft targeted about 80 militant sites, including underground rocket-launching sites, smuggling tunnels and training bases, as well as command posts and weapons storage facilities located in buildings owned by militant commanders, the military said Monday in a release.
Aircraft and gunboats joined forces to attack police headquarters, and rocket squads were struck as they prepared to fire, the release said.
In all, more than 1,000 Gaza targets have been struck since the operation began.
Some Hamas rockets reached as far as Tel Aviv, Israel's commercial capital, but were shot down by the country's air defense system.
As a precaution against the rocket interceptions endangering nearby Ben-Gurion International Airport, civil aviation authorities said on Monday new flight paths were being used.

Nothing new, these people have been fighting off and on for thousands of years. That is not going to change. But, I will say the rockets came from Gaza first. Unfortunatly, this group Hamas loves to operate amoung private citizens. But, don't expect any country to standby and be pounded just because citizens are going to be killed. Isreal has the right to protect itself at all cost.

Ok I am no Political Scientist but I have watched Isreal get bombed and targeted for decades? Why? Because they have money and those countries around them do not? Is this over the Holy Land? I don't care that Jesus stopping grounds are owned by them so why does anyone else? I am Catholic and neither I nor the Chruch has any interest in fighting Isreal over this land? They allow Catholic Church to set up camp there with the Church of the Nativity? And Every Catholic I know has nothing but respect for Isreal? Like I said Im no Political Scieentist but any war started is always over money so I take it Isreal is rich and Gaza is poor so Gaza is ticked off they do not have their share in the money pie? Go ahead and take some time to actually read about the currents events and the past and get a real understanding of how things have led to where we are today.
Israel has become a pariah state bent on the enslavement and killing of the Palestinian people because they feel more entitled than the Palestinians. This massve destruction and killing by Israel will only result in the Arab Spring becoming the Israeli Winter. Israel needs to dump Netan the Yahoo for a government desiring a peaceful solution between the two peoples. The US is broke financially....China and Russia are rising...when the US can no longer buy off Egypt and Egypt embraces the Chinese and the Russians....Israel will not be in a happy place...perhaps then they will decide on a peaceful solution...and it may then be too late.
When Israel is attacked from all sides and wins including more land you call it entitlement. Maybe tell your friends to leave Israel alone and they won't get their butts kicked, I mean they won't be enslaved by Israel...

The 'peaceful solution' for Israel, is to stop being Israel, dismantle all state institutions, organisations, schools, hospitals, convert them all to Islamic institutions, organisations, schools, hospitals, convert every single Israeli individual to Islam and accept Sharia Law - and all its consequences - as the law of the land. That is, if every indvidiual Israeli is allowed to continue living.

Notice how the News Media describes the Arab Palestinians as being "Killed". But when they write about the Israelis civilians, they describe them as "Died"? These words manipulated and inserted into articles by news agencies are intended to sway public opinion.. Recently invented ones such as "West-Bank", "East-Jerusalem", even the name "Palestinian" by itself (Prior to 1952 "Palestinian" meant either an Arab, Christian, or Jew living within the British Mandate, between Trans-Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea). Since the name itself "Palestine" was originated by Hadrian (the same general who built the wall in Britain), with intentions of disassociating the name of Judah as ever being the land of the Jews. Prior to 1967, Jordan remained in control of the small town of Jerusalem for the short 19-years between 1948 - 1967 under which there was NO religious freedom for anyone but Arab. But When Israel finally liberated the town in 1967, religious freedom was given to ALL. To this day.. So when you see such words as "West-Bank", "East Jerusalem", "Settlers" (in a land they continually lived for the past 3,500-years), "Palestinian" (with no reference as being either Arab, Christian, or Jew). Or the complete replacement for the word "Terrorist" by using such wording as insurgent, gunman, or militant.. Remember how the western news media is so intent on distorting the actual events, by changing the wording, in order to sell their stories..

Of course taqiyya has its roots in Shi'a Islam. The leader of the Arab terrorist group As Saiqa --the one who led "Palestinian" Arab Muslims to massacre hundreds of Maronites at Damour, in Lebanon -- Zuheir Mohsen, said the following to James Dorsey in a 1977 inteview in the Dutch newspaper "Trouw":
"The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Which parts of what he said were lies, and he knew he was lying, and which parts did he believe to be true?

In the latest issue of The Economist (February 1-7, 2008), the leader of Hamas, Mamoud Zahar, says:
“‘We [Palestinians] were never an independent state in history,’ he notes. ‘We were part of an Arab state and an Islamic state.’”
Is Mahmoud Zahar telling the truth, as he sees it, or is he lying?
And why in this case, and in the other two examples I have given above, does it matter?

An understanding of the nature and behavior of reptiles is needed before negotiating with Hamas or the PA.
And last night, Israel sent 83 trucks with food and medical supplies from Israel, across the border and into Gaza, for use by Gazan civilians. A number of people, I think about 26, were evacuated to hospitals in Israel.
Just terrible... how can they do that? Hundreds of deaths on both sides, and for what? Revenge? I won't make the dead come back...

Regardless of which side of the fence you are on - when both sides have no regard for civilian life - everyone loses. Neither party can claim that they are human or decent. You cannot win this by sending missiles into Gaza...or into Israel - that kill civilians without regard. Or - is this a war of attrition - last person alive wins?
Both sides should be embarrassed - leave the civilians out of this. People - civilians - want peace - politicians just seem to want to wave their "junk" at each other. Sure - there are extremists on both sides - but that doesn't make it remotely acceptable to kill the innocent.
Hamas targets Israel, not civilians, not military locations. Israel targets the people and location firing the rockets into Israel. Hamas hides behind civilians.
So do not say the two sides are the same and that Israel is targeting civilians.
Yes REAL people want peace. Israel WANTS peace. Having hundreds of indiscriminate missiles fired into your citizens houses for no other reason then being Israel kinda puts a damper on peace. Figure this out - why are we killing each other "in the name of" the SAME God who comes to us through the teachings of the same prophet. What a tragedy that God (or Jehovah or Allah) didn't give us intelligence as one of our many gifts!

As per your misleading headline, Hamas put their rocket launchers in populated areas, they are responsible for what is happening to the Palestinians. It's time for the Palestinians to rise against Hamas or be complicit.
A civilized opponent weighs military objectives against possible civilian casualties. Taking out a rocket launcher is pretty minor as a military objective when you level an area of civilians to do it. They HAVE the opportunity to use precision to remove the launcher - and chose NOT to do so. This was a statement from Israel - an escalation. Israel has a strong military and great intelligence - don't think for a minute that they can't pinpoint an objective and eliminate it - without the large civilian casualties.

Civilian casualties has a simple solution.
Have the mediators tell the Palestinian, Arab cowards, to come out and fight like Israel has. Meet Israel at the border. Grow some courage and face your enemy. Stop hiding behind skirts. If they are so dedicated and right in their cause or care a thing about their own people then meet Israel on the battlefield, winner take all, army against army, or what ever the likes of hamas call themselves.
As long as the Palestinians allow and encourage terrorists to launch missiles into Israel they will get what those actions deserve.

Who started it? It wasn't Israel. Instead, Hamas and Hezbollah see an opportunity to destabilize the whole region, which they have done in Syria and think they can get the world's sympathy by starting the attacks from Gaza. The only solution to the middle east problem is for the major world powers to get together, and literally pull the trigger, flattening the entire region. You will never win with these terrorists because you always have people who are bleeding hearts, who don't look at the whole picture. If Hamas stops sending missiles into Israel, Israel stops reciprocating. Simple. But most of the world prefers to demonize Israel and expect its people to act differently when bombed.

Just about everybody in the world does not hate the Jews. Missiles come from Gaza. They have a general direction but no specific target. They are fired from people like you that say "just about everybody in the world hates Jews".
After the Jews have had enough they fire back with missiles that have a specific direction and specific target. The people they target use innocent civilians as cover. Yes you are somewhat correct about one thing, Hamas considers the "other peoples lives" as worthless. You blame Israel for trying to stop the indiscriminate missiles coming from Gaza.
According to you I can randomly fire a gun into your house just because I don't like you. I will hide behind women and children and if you hurt or kill any of them while trying to stop me "just about everybody in the world" will hate you.
