YANGON, Myanmar -- Allison Morris stood in front of a crowded conference room in a downtown Yangon hotel and introduced a pair of would-be entrepreneurs called Team Optimist on Sunday, the eve of President Barack Obama's visit to Myanmar.
The team -- which lived up to their name -- then explained how they wanted to set up a sort of employment agency to bring back to Myanmar the skilled people who have fled or been forced abroad over the last five decades of military rule and economic stagnation.
Another couple then made a pitch for a recycling business, followed by a commercial college to teach traditional dance.
'New chapter': Obama makes history in Myanmar
"There's so much enthusiasm here," Morris told NBC News. She's an American, raised mostly in Asia, who moved here in August to set up Project Hub Yangon, designed to identify, encourage and launch young entrepreneurs, and the pitches were part of a contest she'd organized.
Her venture is based on a business model that grew out of the United States, mostly in Silicon Valley.
"Where else," she asked, "would they sell copies of the new foreign investment laws at traffic junctions -- alongside newspapers and soft drinks?"
She was referring to the new rules governing business investment here, which rather than gathering dust in a government office have been so eagerly sought after that they're being stocked and sold by the Yangon's street hawkers.
Indeed, after years of isolation, change has come to Myanmar. Obama, an embodiment of that change, on Monday became the first U.S. president to visit the country.

He was greeted by enthusiastic crowds in the former capital Yangon, and met President Thein Sein, a former junta member who has spearheaded reforms since taking office in March 2011, and opposition leader and fellow Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
Another one of those in the audience of Morris’ event was Naureen Nayyar, a Burmese-American blogger who covers the tech scene. "I can't believe they're pitching real ideas," she said. "In Silicon Valley, it’s all apps."
In the gloom of dusk, at a nearby traffic circle workmen raised the U.S. and Myanmar flags alternately on flagpoles. From a distance it looked like that historic photograph, "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima." In its own way this too was historic, something that simply couldn't have been imagined just two years back.

Also almost unbelievable was the scene a little further down the road -- a fashion show, complete with thumping music and flashing lights. It was grandly titled "The Myanmar Internal Fashion Week" and claimed to be the first and biggest show of its kind in the country.
It took place outside a shiny new shopping mall.
The show was packed. Crowds of people -- curious, bewildered even -- carried children on their shoulders, and strained for a glimpse of a show that ranged from scantily-clad young women in tight shorts to lavish wedding dresses.

Myanmar is changing fast, from the crowded roads to the buzz of new business activity.
Critics of the Obama’s visit say it is premature when so much remains to be done.
But if you look at where it stood just two years ago, the change after decades of isolation is still astounding -- from the release of political prisoners (with more just ahead of Obama's visit) to greater press freedom. And of course the release of Aung San Suu Kyi along with her election as a member of parliament and partner in the reform process.

It was appropriate that Obama chose Yangon University for a speech Tuesday. You could smell the fresh paint and lacquer after the authorities gave the dilapidated main hall a face lift for the occasion.
The university, long a center of protest and consequent repression, has seen it all -- hope, despair, and neglect. It played a key role in the independence movement and uprising against the generals, for which the students paid dearly.
More recently what was once one of the most famous and best regarded educational institutions in Asia was virtually closed by the military. Now there are hopes that it can restore its former glory.

Myanmar's renaissance will depend on rebuilding a shattered education system.
At the entrance of the university, where the military once hoisted Orwellian slogans, there are huge billboards advertising shoes, perfume and a line of fashion called Step. "Step into the future," reads the slogan.

Nearby, a group of policemen and security officials stood around chatting. One of their cellphones rang. The ringtone was "Gangnam Style," the South Korean pop song that became an international sensation earlier this year.
They didn't dance, but if they had it wouldn't have been surprising -- such is the almost surreal pace of change in Myanmar.

I noticed no where in the article any mention of Obamar's repeatedly mispronouncing the name of his guest; calling it Burma, and not aware he was misprounouncing the president's name also. Had Romney and/or Bush done this, there would be much ado and denigration because of it. yes we keep giving foreign aid to other countries while our debt rises. we give the tune of 1.7 trillion dollars in foreign aid a year. while the deficit spending is 1.3 trillion dollars a year. want to fix the deficit? simple cut all foreign aid out completely and use the .4 trillion left over to pay down the debt, if we do that as the very first thing, its a start to getting us out of trouble.
secondly end all free trade agreements, raise tarrifs, and limit imports. how can economy be good when over 90% of the things sold in this country are made by outsourced jobs? untill we stop the free trade falacy things will never get better here. read the american dream its written by two very famous economists. the book explains how free trade is great for international corporations, but is very bad for a nations internal economy. the book tells how free trade is a large part of what is wrong in our country currently.

Isolationism went out of style after Pearl harbor...when the American People wised up and realized that you either deal with the world or it deals with you. Right now the Republicans in Congress need time to sort out what they will do in the next week or so...improve the economy through the Holidays or get replaced at the mid-terms. i agree with you, am just sick of the foreign aid. we borrow from China to give the money away while our national debt keeps climbing and the American people are responsible for the debt. we give our old people a 1.7% increase in their ss ($17 a month if they make $1k) and pass out BILLIONS to other countries.
Giving other people's money away is the only thing this community organizing *&^$#@ in the White House knows how to do.
we give $4billion a year to Israel who in turn provides free healthcare to all of its citizens regardless on financial need. There is outrage against Obama care for our citizens but no concern that we borrow money from china to fund free healthcare for Israel!!!

You apparently missed the fact that Congress gave out a Congressional Medal to the woman from Burma who fought for democracy and human rights got the Nobel prize. You should direct your criticism at the Republican held House of Representatives and let them know of your disapproval.

The "landlside" in the electoral college does not even come close to illustrating that the Boy Blunder lost had fewer more votes this time than last. The popular vote was much closer and THAT shows the real sentiment of the country. Seems the lure of more free stuff was just too much for the lazy and worthless.

First of all, allow me to disabuse you of the notion that Obamacare has anything to do with “health” care. Obamacare is not about health. It’s not about lowering the cost of health insurance. And it’s not about ensuring that everyone is insured.
It is about locking more Americans into the clutches of the Big Pharma/Medical Industrial complex, providing more customers for Big Insurance and confiscating more wealth from individuals and businesses.
The American healthcare system should properly be called “sickcare.” It’s a subtle and esoteric system of population control with prescription drugs issued at the public expense by the drug cartel — the conglomerate of pharmaceutical houses.
They commit population control under the pretense of “healthcare” and make people pay for it. And this medical cartel has no legal liability. It is forced — or at least deceptive — medication. And most doctors don’t have a clue. They write prescriptions based on falsified data and kickbacks — from speaker fees and ghostwriting glowing medical reviews — without regard to whether their patients will benefit.
Health costs nothing. Sickness care has us in bankruptcy. If the medical establishment, insurance companies and Obamacare writers wanted Americans to be healthy, they’d promote healthy eating, healthy lifestyles, vitamin D supplementation, natural supplements and alternative health choices rather than toxin-laden vaccinations, body-destroying cancer treatment drugs, harmful symptom-rather-than-cause-attacking heart, statin and diabetes drugs, and carcinogen- and GMO-laced processed foods.
Now Obamacare’s devastating financial effects are coming to the fore. They can be seen in the rising costs of health insurance, layoffs, cuts in employment hours, rising prices and looming tax hikes. Obamacare will send unemployment numbers skyrocketing and force workers — who find their hours cut back below the “full-time” threshold of 30 hours — to try to find multiple part-time jobs to make ends meet. Or they’ll give up working altogether and join the rising numbers of wards of the state: 49.7 million in poverty, non-farm employment at 2005 levels, 46.7 million on food stamps and 9 million leaving the workforce and joining the disability roles. The Congressional Budget Office predicts Obamacare will cost 800,000 jobs by 2020-2021. It will be much worse than that.
With jobless numbers already high and manufacturing and mid-level white collar professional service jobs leaving the United States never to return, most new jobs come in the healthcare, social assistance (ambulatory healthcare services) and food service industries (waiting tables and tending bar).
But the medical device and food service industries are being hit hardest by Obamacare, as business owners seek ways to remain profitable and competitive once the provisions kick in.
During the International Franchise Association convention in Washington, D.C., in September, franchisers learned just how hard Obamacare would hit them. David Barr, a Taco Bell and Kentucky Fried Chicken franchiser, told the group how Obamacare will cut his profits and probably theirs as well — in half. Their only choice is to slash employee hours so they aren’t eligible for company-paid health insurance or stop offering insurance and pay the $2,000 per employee fine.
Barr has 23 stores with 421 employees, 109 of whom are full-time. Of those, he provides health insurance to 30. His total cost is $129,000 per year and his employees pay $995. Under Obamacare, he’ll have to provide health insurance for all 109 full-time employees at a cost of $444,000 per year. The $315,000 increase is more than half his annual profit, after expenses. If he chose the fine instead, his healthcare costs would still increase by $89,000 per year.
Darden Foods, the world’s largest casual dining company — it includes Olive Garden, Red Lobster and LongHorn Steakhouse — was one of the first to announce it would be limiting worker hours to avoid healthcare requirements. Papa John’s CEO John Schnatter said the cost of his pizzas will rise between 11 and 14 cents and worker hours will be reduced. He expects the law to cost his company between $5 billion and $8 billion annually.
In July, McDonalds Chief Financial Officer Peter Benson said Obamacare will cost his company $420 million in new healthcare costs even though the company received a waiver from the Administration of Barack Obama. His menu prices will increase as a result.
Florida-based restaurant owner John Metz, who owns 40 Denny’s restaurants and the Hurricane Grill & Wings franchise, said last week he would be tacking a 5 percent Obamacare surcharge on his meals and reduce employee hours. He says it is “the only alternative. I’ve got to pass the cost to the customer.”
Look for other restaurants faced with a choice of becoming unprofitable by absorbing the costs or uncompetitive by raising their menu prices if they insure their employees and pass the cost to consumers to also cut worker hours.
Wal-Mart recently raised its health insurance premiums as much as 36 percent, putting coverage out of the reach of many of its employees. Its executives say employee hours will be cut. Likewise, the Kroger grocery chain is also reducing employee hours.

But here are some Obamacare taxes kicking in beginning in 2013, most of which will hit both the so-called “rich” and the poor either directly or indirectly.
And even more Obamacare taxes kick hit in 2014.
The bottom line for the average family, according to Forbes.com, is an additional annual cost of $1,261 for the average family, or a diversion of 2.5 percent of the average household’s income in taxes alone. And this doesn’t factor in the additional costs resulting from rising food and product costs and loss of income due to worker hour reductions and job losses.
Obamacare sycophants glommed on to the progressive, government-growing, insurance industry-profiting healthcare reform effort largely because they believed Big Insurance was screwing them over by raising premiums and not paying for certain conditions. Yet those hated insurance companies wrote the law and made sure that those who disdained health insurance — either because they were young and felt they didn’t need it or were financially able to go without it — were forced into the plan, ensuring Big Insurance a whole host of new customers, guaranteeing themselves a large profit and a government treasury to make sure the bills were paid. And those sycophants are just delighted with that outcome.
But if they thought they were drawing the short straw when corporate profits were on the line, wait until they see what they get now that the sociopaths in the dysfunctional government bureaucracy are involved.
The ACA is a positive step and much-needed. Americans will be very happy with it
