Americans tied to Israel caught in the chaos of Gaza conflict

View more videos at: http://nbcnewyork.com.

Harvard student Edan Razinovsky spent the weekend agonizing over whether he should book a ticket to Tel Aviv, as the Israeli army was calling up reservists from around the country, including Razinovsky's former unit, for a possible ground invasion into Gaza.

Razinovsky, 26, moved to the U.S. from Israel when he was a toddler, and voluntarily joined the Israeli army two years ago for an 18-month stint. He remains officially registered as a reservist although as a student living abroad he isn’t obligated to return.

“When you are in the army, you train for conflict and you are prepared, but to actually go in is somewhat surreal,” said Razinovsky. “My former commander left me a voice mail the other day, saying the unit had been called up, and I have been going back and forth as to whether I should go or not.”

Razinovsky isn’t the only American caught up in the chaos. Americans both inside and outside of Israel have had their lives turned upside down in the last week and a half, from reservists who have felt the need to return to Israel, to brides-to-be forced to alter wedding day plans. There are no official figures as to how many American Jews live in Israel, but around 2,000 Americans move to Israel every year.

In southern Israel, support grows for action in Gaza

Razinovsky is now waiting to see how the conflict develops, and feels strongly that if his unit needs him, he will fly over, even if it means sacrificing the semester at Harvard.

Last week, the Israeli Defense Forces called up around 31,000 reservists with authorization to mobilize up to 75,000. Anecdotal reports suggest that quite a few Americans who have served in the Israeli army have now returned to serve in the current conflict.

Daily life thrown
Avi Schwartz, who grew up in Silver Spring, Md., is used to juggling the off-again, on-again clashes, having lived in Israel for more than 10 years. But as the operator of a tour company, the current conflict has forced him to think of ways to reposition his business.

“About half of a women’s group we were expecting to come this week cancelled,” said Schwartz, 34, as an air raid siren went off in Jerusalem. “There are still groups that want to come despite the violence, and now we are trying to find and organize tours for those that want to show their support for Israel.”

When Debbie Shuval moved to Israel from Manhattan in August to attend business school, she didn’t count on having to explain a war to her three young kids.

Clinton heads to Mideast on peace mission, Hamas remains defiant

“The kids see soldiers all the time, and my 3-year-old son often tells me that when he’s big he will also go to the war,” said Shuval. “The most difficult part of this flare up has been hearing about friends who have been called up. It makes the conflict feel so much more real; living in Jerusalem, the relative quiet can give you a false sense of calm.”

A wedding to remember
While Razinovsky was busy staying in contact with his commanders, Pnina Weiss spent the weekend reorganizing her wedding with just a few days to go. Rockets raining down from Gaza into the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon, where her wedding hall was located, had thrown her plans into disarray.

Fewer than four days later, and thanks to the generosity of friends, family and strangers, Weiss was able to rearrange her affair to take place in a hall 16 miles north of Tel Aviv, closer to her parents’ home in Raanana, where tree-lined streets are more reminiscent of Southern California than the Middle East.

She has yet to taste the food, and will be using centerpieces and decorations donated by a friend of a friend who is getting married the night before.

Despite the quick turnaround, Weiss’ wedding will be a smaller affair than originally planned. She had organized the wedding for Thanksgiving weekend to make it easy for friends and family in the U.S. to attend. At least 11 family members from America have cancelled with another 30 or so from Ashkelon also too nervous to travel on unprotected roads or to leave their kids alone.

“Putting off the wedding wasn’t an option,” said Weiss, who moved to Israel from Dallas when she was four. “I’m 34 and I’ve waited many years for this so what does the rest matter? I know on Thursday I’m getting married. It will definitely be a wedding that no one will forget.”

In reality you can be either American or Israeli, no one believes in dual loyalties.

Alas many American Jews have their loyalty back in the Bronze Age :(

My biggest fear is they are over-run, and all come here!

Let the two groups slaughter each other, but keep my country out of it.

Why shouldn't people with ties to Israel go back to fight for it? Lots of Americans went to England to fight before the US officially joined WWII. What's the difference?

@William Demuth

I'm a Jew and the State of Israel and the United States are BOTH my homes. The Jewish homeland is my biblical home and I love her, but the United States beats the love for Israel. I will always pick up a rifle and die for my country against any foreign aggressors.

You clearly don't love you country, as the article just said there's 2,000+ American Jews who lived or often visited Israel, so you think they should die?

You know what my fear is? To see you raising children to have no remorse, no care about other human beings, to reject a group if their homeland is gone, you're not a true American, a true American would respect the idea of the pursuit of happiness, the rights to be free, and be freed from terrorism and racism, which you can't seems to grasp.

I am an American Jew, I have more respect for the United States, Israel, or any other free countries, don't ever ever say that we Jews have more loyalty toward Israel. There's a big different between supporting and loyalty.

Look at the Civil War where we Jews fought for both sides, look at the World Wars where Jews fought with your fellow Americans while our brethrens were getting slaughtered like mere cattles, look at the 5+ million Jews who doesn't go to Israel as they loved it here. Look at the vast amount of Jews who was forced out of their lands in the Civil War and yet still stayed as their love for the country is nothing (Israel didn't even exist!)

This is not your country this is OUR country: Jews, Muslims, Christians, whatever, we all are Americans that's final. The day that I will fight against any enemy forces on American soils is for YOU to be freed just like our rights to be freed in any places.

Your claim to a "Biblical Homeland" is just one of several lies produced by secular Zionist propagandists in an effort to justify a racist colonizing entity, Israel, on a land that was already inhabited by Christians, Muslims, Druze ,and yes a MINORITY Jewish population. If you are an Arab (Semitic) Jew, with family heritage that is of ARAB blood, then you may claim lineage to ancient Hebrew people of the Bible, but Jews who invaded Palestine en masse from about 1920 forward are largely non-Semitic Europeans whose families CONVERTED to Judaism centuries after Biblical times.

Zionists essentially hijacked the Jewish religion to give them a ridiculous excuse to steal land from other people.

The Israel-Palestine Conflict is no more complicated than any other armed robbery. Google: Palestinian loss of land map For a look at what it is really about. Israel is the aggressor. It always has been.

People will always want to go and fight wars for many reasons, patriotism is only one. This was recognized and the reason we imprisoned the Japanese during WWII. If you say it is your duty to fight for your homeland no matter where you live then you must justify the imprisoning of the Japanese.

War doesn't determine who is right but only who is left.

In reality you can be either American or Israeli, no one believes in dual loyalties.

How's this for an idea?

Throw your socio/geo-political loyalties to the side for a moment. Forget you're a citizen of Earth, and think for a moment that you are just a human being. Nothing tied to nation-states, religious predisposition or partisan baggage.

What if we all (for a moment at least) could realize that the foundations which our "loyalties" are formed are NOTHING but illusions? Pieces of floating crust and mantle.

Borders, ethnicities, political parties .... tribal nonsense, the lot.

Alas many American Jews have their loyalty back in the Bronze Age :(

Unfortunately, I think this is much more a sad reflection of the human condition than that of American society.

This idea (in the 21st century) that we are merely the sum of the parts that make up the circumstances of our birth, and the nation we happened to take our first @!$%#, is preposterous.

We've become a parity of ourselves. And, in a sick twist, a good majority of our tribe find it a good idea to organize their entire lives around the struggle over a patch of desert.

ughhh, how unbelievable boring.

Was there no land beneath the feet of young men and women who proceeded the creation of your Biblical stories?

How far back shall we go here?

How can anyone (who reside in the United States of America) say with any semblance of human dignity that they claim "right" to one land over another? How many were slaughtered on this very land so that you and I can sit here and even say such nonsense.

I'm not really sure how any person can "claim rights of man" over any such patch of land. And, if you're an American and make such a claim while still keeping a straight face ... then it's true. We've completely forgotten our history.

His homeland is America, raised here, goes to Harvard, but he would rather serve in a foreign army. As a Vet myself, I am appalled. Whether you agree with our presence in Afghanistan or not, there are volunteers over there rooting out the Taliban and other terrorists. I see no appreciation for the life he leads here in the USA, if he wants to serve elsewhere. Move there after you get your degree and see if you can live with the same standard of living and general safety.

Hoticket

I am a strong supporter of Israel, but I have to tell you that at times I do feel bad for the Palestinians. It is hard to tell if it is stupidity or radical behavior which has caused them to continually support Islamist radicals and murderers. They chose the Nazis during WWII, the 5 nations that attacked Israel in 48, Arafat, Hezbollah, Hamas. All radical terrorist losers. They have been the pawns of many of these entities, forced into refugee camps to be symbols of why the Islamists want to eliminate Israel. Their dead children are paraded all over the Internet, and I suspect that most of them were killed by Hamas indirectly and directly.

Can they be that stupid to let Hamas set up launch pads in playgrounds and hide among the civilians. Do they think that Arafat was trying to help them as he stole all their money. Do they really think Hezbollah is a freedom fighting organization after they have killed so many. I start to feel sorry for them....but...forget what I said. They are stupid terrorists.

In reality you can be either American or Israeli, no one believes in dual loyalties.

Our government must believe in dual loyalties, as it is continually allowing Muslims to become citizens of the US while allowing them to hold on to their citizenship in whatever Muslim country they came from.

Talk about a dangerous divided loyalty, now this is something we have seen proof of over and over yet continue to allow.

Then we have the Mexicans we keep allowing to have dual citizenship. They come here with no secret about how they hate the US and love Mexico first, yet we have no problem allowing their dual citizenship, or with allowing them to send their US dollars by the billions back to Mexico.

Every time I have mentioned the problem of divided loyalties inherent with dual citizenship, I have been attacked with violent comments from the liberal left, but I suppose it's different when you attack the Jews, isn't it?

You can actually have dual citizenship, or more with some countries. I know many US/Israeli dual citizens. It is nothing unusual. Above all I am American and having served this country I do not wish to serve another country. But there are many American Jews who have chosen dual citizenship and served in the IDF. While being a member of the US Armed forces puts you in the elite, world police status, being a member of the IDF puts you in the "Save Israel" status. Some will argue that the US saves Israel, but not with soldiers fighting side by side the IDF. The US has supplied weaponry, money and diplomatic strength, but not reinforcements. That is an individual decision.

I personally have a dual citizenship, American/Russian. When it comes to issues between US and Russia, I have absolutely no problem siding with US, don't even need to give it second thought.

As for Israel, American-Israelis don't need to worry about conflict of loyalties, US and Israel have the same goals, the same standards and the same enemies.

#1.19 - Tue Nov 20, 2012 9:47 PM EST

Don't tell me how I think. Israel's goals are not my goals. We don't have the same enemies, as I am not my own enemy, I don't spy on my friends (Pollard) or bomb and kill them on ships. (USS Liberty) There are also palestinians that are Americans. I know how badly many are treated by Israel. American citizens simply trying to visit family in Gaza and the West Bank are refulsed.

I don't agree with dual passports, my feeling is make a choice and then stick with it. This Prime Minister openly interferring in our election. No, as a taxpayer it is crazy that we borrow money from China to give to Egypt and Israel. What part don't you people understand, there is NO more money. We need to do some nation building here, if they only have rocks and stick in that part of the world they will still be fighting anyway. They have done it for thousands of years, let them kill each other.

Here is the deal. The moment you decide to join a foreign army, be that Israeli or not, you are putting the interests of that country along with your loyalties first and foremost, placing the US a distant second. I will bet that if you join the Iranian army for instance, you will be arrested immediately upon setting foot on US soil and readily carted away to some undisclosed underground secret prison, courtesy of the CIA.

Dick,

Here are some facts that anyone with half a ounce of intelligence and willing to look at credible sources and not PLO nonsense, any religious site from both sides, or some hate speech that is anti-Semitic.

Saying the Jewish people are causing Palestinians to have no remorse for taking life is pure nonsense. Google the whole thing over there and look at history and you will see things differently.

The land contrary to myth was never taken from the Palestinians, they lost it because during the time that Israel was allowed to set up a country, the people now known as Palestinians were also given with this accord a right to set up their own homeland. The problem is that the Palestinians refused because they stated that if Israel had a land they would rather fight then live in peace.

After this there were three wars. During the first war the surrounding Arab countries attacked Israel (I might add that they had no help whatsoever from the U.S. at that time), at the same time the people today known as the Palestinians rose up internally and fought to try to overthrow the Hebrew state. They lost, but still Israel tried to live at peace with them. It was at this time that the spiritual leader was the Jerusalem Mufti (better known as the Gestapo Mufti because during WW2 he was part of the gestapo death squads which exterminated every Jew they could get their hands on), after the war this man brought his ideology with him along with Mien Kompf (the book Hitler wrote) and this not only became required reading material for all Palestinians during school but most of the Arab world has adopted it as a teaching tool of how to deal with Jewish people. Anyway, there were two more wars that Israel's neighbors had with Israel with the openly stated intention of not only destroying the nation of Israel but wiping every Jew off the face of the planet (some religion of peace isn't it). During both these wars the people known as the Palestinians attacked Israel each time even though they were living with them peacefully to try to help destroy the government as they were attacked from outside. Both times the Arabs lost the war and lost badly, but the second time Israel had enough and went to round up the traitors of the state (as any country would do) but the Palestinians ran. Did they lose their homes, yes, but only after rising up and trying to destroy the state, they are lucky it wasn't a Arab country they would have all been killed.

All the Arab states that the Palestinains went to ended up kicking them out because they rose up and caused all sort of problems. The Syrians kicked them out, Egypt wanted nothing to do with them, and for that matter neither did or does Lebynon, but they have dug themselves in with Iran's and Syria's help so they could not be removed by the government.

But even after all this Israel wished to live in peace, even after the all the slaughters that Arafat had committed or overseen. But what happened when Israel gave up land for peace. The Palestinians started a wave of terror with suicide bombings. It was not until Arafat died and the new leadership came into power, and Israel put up the fence that no more bombings came out of the West bank. And you know what, they are allowed free movement, and do live at peace with Israel. Do you know what is holding up the peace process? 3 things: one is the Palestinians refusal to recognize Israel's right to exist. The second is because neither side will budge of Jerusalem (and I would not either if I was Israel. When the Arabs controlled Jerusalem they refused Jews from visiting any holy site. But the Jews allow the Arabs to even though to this day they riot and act like a three year old if a Jew dares to walk on their holiest site, the temple mount). And last, every-time any-type of progress is made Hamas starts terrorizing Israel with Rockets and mortars and progress is stopped.

Look up 60 minutes and the report they did on Pallywood:

Hot ticket/Where do you get the claim that Palestinians supported Hitler in W.W.2? Palestine was a British Protectorate from1918 until 1948.The Israeli State was not in existence at that time. The Jewish History is of a nomadic race going into Egypt and settling there for a period then leaving to continue with their nomadic life style. After a period of forty years(Jewish claims) They were told by their Religious Leaders that their God Jehovah had given them a promised land called Can-nan. Unfortunately ,the inhabitants of the region were called Philistines so began the attempt to conquer the country, according to Jewish History. This war between them and the original inhabitants continued even after the region was conquered by the Romans. In the 2ND. century A.D. the true rulers i.e. Romans ,realising that they wouldn't stop the attempt to commit genocide on the original inhabitants, performed what the Jews called The Diaspora,in effect the expulsion of the Jewish Population. The Israeli State was formed after the Second World War with the help of the Western World( mainly American) finances. This time in their History they must seek a political solution to this conflict.

Dude...Go back to Israel and fight. That is your right as an American. Just stay there too. I look forward to the day America wakes up and realizes how she is being used by Israel.

Even the Egyptians had a blockade on their side. That sould tell you something. Hamas is from Syria. They are like Neo Nazis stockpiling weapons in their backyards to kill all Jews. They care nothing for Palestine. They only wanted a chance to occupy and make an Extremist Muslim State. If the new Egypt backs them it is very, very serious. This is NOT about Palestine, its about Extremist Muslim Terrorists. Its why we are in Afghanistan. We may all be pulled into a World War IF the Muslim world does not deal with Hamas. This is not about Palestine. I do believe all of us have to stand against anyone who demands "Obliterate Irsael" or Obliterate anyone. We must stand against "Kill all Jews" or Kill all blacks or kill all anyone. Who wants to go to war? No sane person. But if some group vows to kill you, what can you do? America, bowing as always to the jewish lobbies, has proclaimed Hamas a terrorist organization, but most of the international community does not agree. The Israelis are living on what was and what should still be be Arab land.

This is what happens when a large portion of the reporters and article writers in our mediia are Jewish. We only get the Jewish side of the story and never anything from the Palestinian point of view. This is all purposefully done by the American media, which seems to believe that only Jews make good reporters. For all of these unpatriotic parasites that live here and refuse to join the US military but jump at the first chance to join the IDF to kill Palestinians or the Lebanese I say kick them out and revoke their American citizenship. They are the real threats to our security and democracy. They steal our mlitary secrets and pass them on to Israel, they interfere in our politics and finances, and they have the blood of American citizens on their dirty hands.A man can't serve two masters equally.

    Chris,

Are you blind, stupid or both. To state that the news is pro Israel is pure nonsense. They have shown a bias that it does not matter that Hamas fired thousands of Missiles and mortars at Israel, they are always made out to be the aggressor when after enduring months and sometimes years of attacks they finally act to stop it. I do not know which news you are watching, but please tell me the channel because I might finally get some real news for once.

And how is Israel a threat to our democracy when they are our only ally that actually has the same goals and values we have. I do not know about you but I remember on 9/11 in every Arab capital they were dancing in joy, while the Israeli's sent help and had a day of mourning for our lost people. How many Jews were on the planes on 9/11, and for that matter, how many Jews killed our boys with IED's? There were non, instead they helped with intelligence because to help militarily would have inflamed the Arab world and broke up any coalition that we had.

You need to get a education, use your brains for once in your life and study facts before you start posting lies.

I agree. And let's start with the Muslims and the Mexicans.

No dual citizenship, especially for the Muslims and Mexicans. It's just too dangerous for the Muslims to be able to move so freely back and forth between the US and countries that we are essentially at war with, and as far as Mexico goes, it does not make sense to allow such freedom of movement between this country and and a country where criminals can move back and forth so freely with huge amounts of cash and drugs.

No dual citizenship. It is ridiculous to think a person can be loyal to two countries, especially two countries with such opposite ideologies.

Along with no dual citizenship, we should stop the practice of citizenship for babies born here unless one parent is a citizen.

Dual-citizenship is nonsense? Tell me, cynic: why should anyone give up one of their countries?

      #6.3 - Tue Nov 20, 2012 8:40 PM EST

They don't need to give it up, just don't take on another. It is simple. and when you come here, leave your crap behind you, whether you are Irish, Jew, Palestine, etc.

        #6.4 - Wed Nov 21, 2012 1:19 AM EST

That doesn't address anyone that was born with dual citizenship, etc

For an Israel/America example, I had a co-worker that spent time in both Israel and America. Her mother is a US citizen living in the US, her father is an Israeli citizen living in Israel. Why should she give up either one?

“The kids see soldiers all the time, and my 3-year-old son often tells me that when he’s big he will also go to the war,” said Shuval.

What in the non-existent name of your made-up god is wrong with you phucking people??!

My son knows all too well what it means to go to war, and he always says how proud he is that I served our country, but more importantly, how much more glad he is that I returned, and how much he hopes I never have to go to war again.

Reread that last line "how much he hopes I never have to go to war again."

THAT is what it means to be a soldier - to never HAVE to go to war.

But it seems to me far too many of you are all too eager to rush off to war, to shed blood - and for what?

        Nothing.

War does not prove who is right and who is wrong, only who is left.

In times of peace, sons bury their fathers.

In times of war, fathers bury their sons.

What kind of world do you REALLY want?

If you joined the Israeli IDF, or any other foriegn army, you are not an American, no matter what the paperwork may say. And if you join the IDF and leave them hanging when you are called up to active duty, you're not much of an Israeli either. What a useless SoS.

"Razinovsky is now waiting to see how the conflict develops, and feels strongly that if his unit needs him, he will fly over, even if it means sacrificing the semester at Harvard."

There are cease-fire talks and thats a great thing no one wants to go to war and the violence on both sides must stop. Due to the cease fire talks, Going to Israel at the moment is not an option. As far as loyalty to the USA there is no question about it. Being a doctor within the USA and serving its citizens and possibly joining the Army to do so shows no lack of loyalty. While in the IDF training with and helping the US Troops with tactics they will use in Afghanistan also shows no lack of loyalty.

        Um, no. They aren't.

        Hamas is not Palestine.

That goes without saying. Just like "Democrats are not America" or "Republicans are not America" or "Insert any ideology here is not America."

Hamas occupied it hoping to make a future new Muslim State

Meh, that's debatable. Pretty much every Islamic faction on Earth has "some" sort of planet domination fascination. Most religions do, why else do you think America has such a problem with Christian revisionists who would essentially like to turn the states into a Theocracy?

        This problem is pretty widespread.

I'm not a fan of Islam as I think it has more political motivation built within its faith than most other religions do, but we need to be honest with ourselves. The majority of Muslim people just want to live their lives like you and I.

I pledged allegiance to a flag when I was a kid and that is forever. I took an oath to defend a Constitution when I was 17 and that too is forever. But then, I was born here (though of Scotts-Irish decent) and my loyalties to God and Country have never been divided. Part of that devotion is to what this Country stands for..Freedom and Justice for ALL. And those inalienable rights know no borders but belong to all peoples. For that I have fought for the children of many countries over a 23 year period of my life. I feel that is probably the most substantual thing I have ever done. Israel as a nation was devastated and all but destroyed by a fascist tyrant and upon their liberation we, their liberators, deemed it worthy to allow and assist them to restore there nation and their dignity. As a nation we must insure that they do not loose what they have earned, if we do, we reverse our course and admit Adolf was right all along. I for one will never do that, I pray my Country never does either. If an American-Jew is stuggling with his/her loyalties I suggest there is no division at the core.

Uh I think that Hitler terrorized the Jews of Europe!!! There wasn't a noticeable amount of Jews in Palestine during that time period. If you feel so complelled to go and enlist in the IDF , but don't feel that same nationalistic fervor for the US then you need to leave and go to Israel on a permanent basis. We don't need part time Americans in this country, because they tend to turn into traitors as has been demonstrated in the very recent past.

Several Palestineans have been imprisoned, tortured and later had "accidents" for being suspected of being Jewish Sympathizers or having some family ties come down through the ages, by Hamas. Hamas is not Palistinean. Too many Americans don't know. Hamas is a terrorist group from Syria and their main goal is not to help Palestine, but to take over and make a Terrorist Muslim State. By force inside and out. Will the new Egypt back them as the Muslim Brotherhood?

Any Israeli here could be asked at any time by security services of Israel to do something against the policy of the US. So what is going to be? That is why I do not believe in dual citizenship. I know for me as a grad student I was so pro Israel and year after year and travelling all over the world, it has become less and less. Over 60 years now we have supported them, enough, it is time to stand or fall on your own. If your loyalty is to the US, why would you want us to borrow money to give to Israel or for that matter Egypt? There is no more money, if we get extra then lets spend it here.

Do you know what a reserve is by definition? If you joined, you should go. If you don't want to go, you shouldn't have joined. What's so complicated and why does the international community need to know about your lack of conviction and rampant indecisiveness? Shut up and go to Israel or go into hiding, nobody cares about your selfish publicity mongering stunt.

                      Where did you hear this?

*NOTE: The U.S.A. is FUNDING the IRON DOME SYSTEM!

By-The-Way... It certainly would be interesting to learn if any members of Our Government, OR, their extended family members (hint - hint) own a vested interested in: 'IRON DOME'. Production of the System Units, and the missiles have been ramped-up to around the clock overtime production, what what I understand, to be paid for by the U.S. Congress!

F.Y.I.: $50 Million per battery. $50,000 per missile, @ standard, non wartime production rate.

                      >>> I'm fairly certain that a military aircraft that flew over a Midwest City over last Weekend, was most likely delivering the heavy (The explosions that are being reported must be at least 1 Ton bombs...) ordnance that is being deployed TUESDAY night, (Gaza.).

Like I told you yesterday, mosh, I don't blame you for pretending to be Israeli, but you're really not fooling anyone.

You SHOULD be ashamed of your palestinian heritage.

Are you being PAID to be that stupid?

It was Hamas rocket fire that started this. And if they had managed to kill some women and children they'd be burning a goat, firing AK's in the air and dancing around burning American flags in celebration.

Well, I don't know where the hell you're going, but volunteering to become a suicide bomber would suit you. Goodbye!

Or are you just making empty threats? You going to stay here, where you hate it so much, and stop paying taxes? On all $8000 of your burger-flippers income?
