A destroyed vehicle is pictured at the scene of a suicide attack in Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul on Nov. 21, 2012. A suicide bomber blew himself up near a NATO base in Kabul's diplomatic district on Wednesday, hitting a military vehicle and killing two people, police and a military spokesman said.
Updated at 1:01 p.m. ET: A suicide bomber killed two Afghan guards outside a foreign-run military compound in the main diplomatic area of the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Wednesday, Interior Ministry officials said, an attack that was quickly claimed by the Taliban.
"The bomber killed himself in front of the compound. Two people were killed and two more were wounded, all Afghan guards," said Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danesh.
A police official in Kabul told NBC News that the attacker was on foot when he came to the neighborhood in Kabul, where there's a heavy concentration of foreign and NGO offices.
According to the official, the man was recognized by the security guards. They opened fire on him as the suicide attacker threw the grenades at the guards and then detonated himself.
There was a second suicide attacker, but he was killed by guards before he could detonate his grenade.
Dozens of police swarmed to the area, where shattered glass from cars lay on the ground, and cordoned it off.
It was not immediately clear which foreign forces run the compound, although Afghan security officials said it is U.S.-run. A spokeswoman at the U.S. embassy in Kabul said its security team was investigating the blast.
The Taliban took responsibility for the attack, which happened at 8.20 a.m. local time, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location.
Embassy sirens sounded and ambulances could be heard after the blast, which happened in the area where the U.S. and British embassies and the headquarters of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force are located.
A spokesman for ISAF said the coalition was aware of an explosion and that one of its vehicles had been damaged.
Reuters contributed to this report.

The Taliban will never quit unless they are exterminated. This is an excellant example of how the Taliban really operates. They will terrorise and kill their own people just to stay in power. If the U.S leaves this country we will be abandoning the magority of the population (who do not want Taliban rule) to the tender mercies of the minority Taliban.History will soon repeat itself.Afghanistan will suffer the same fate as South Viet Nam once we pull out.
It looks like the Taliban are already anticipating NATO's departure, so they can take their country back into the dark ages. The Taliban will once again establish their brutal tyranny over Afghanistan. They will once again provide a safe haven for Muslim terrorists. And they will once again build their suicide bombs and plan yet more attacks on the civilized world. What a waste.
It is, perhaps, small comfort to realize that the citizens of the country who refused to fully support the NATO forces will be back under the oppressive boot heel of the Muslim extremists. Maybe they will regret their cowardice.
I'm sure their women will.

This is happening even after 11 years into the war!
If one has backstabbing and ungrateful allies such as Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, one does not need enemies.
Ironically, one of the God fathers for these Taliban and other Islamic militants, criminal Gen Mush is hiding in Britain and his son is in the US.
Yet today Vietnam is a unified and stable country. One does not read about killings and oppression there, and the population has risen to a startling 87 million.
The United States has done all it can to establish a stable government in Afghanistan. At some point, the Afghans must take over.
Wow, people like you are still hanging around. Even bringing up Vietnam or all things. Occupation of other countries is out of style, as are the lawmakers who supported it. Sorry about that.
Explosives are an Islamic sacrament. Just as the captured London subway bomber said, "[Muslims] will win because we love death more than you love life.”
Muslims are fundamentally different from people who love life more that death. To try to interact with them by the same standards and rules we would use with civilized people is a serious mistake.
Until Islam is dragged out of its millennium-long dark age, it will represent a lethal threat to civilized people who favor life over death, creation over destruction, and mercy over cruelty.
Most are slowly realizing what you are mentioning!
Still, UN and its agencies, human rights groups, many lobbyists in the US, Britain, European nations and other places start jumping and counting "children", "women" and so on when they see the monies or grants.
After Iraqi wars, Sunni Saudi and co bigoted barbarians became rich by manipulating high oil prices. They are good in throwing some monies around too!
Or else, who with a little sense who would worry about Syria, Iran and other places where Shiites and Sunnis are battling whose Allah is greater?
All of a sudden, media and Saudi toilet/human rights watches start screaming about "children", "women", affected by Assad's actions, floods/earth quakes in Pakistan and so on!
They forget easily Pakistan, Darfur, Sudan and other Muslim nations, where genocides of minorities have been going on!
By the by, they don't see much money by jumping on those places!!
Some slacking afghan Cops. Just more white cops on dope.
In Afghanistan, Pakis have backstabbed the US and NATO forces big time. Half of NATO forces deaths are due to ungrateful and backstabbing Pakis.
When the NATO forces were entering Kandahar in 2001, Pakis airlifted key al-Qaida, Taliban, ISI and others militants by back door from Kandahar.
This includes Mullah Omar, Osama and many including Paki Haqqani militant network leaders.
Hope people remember about Pakis sheltering Osama.
These Paki Islamic religious Nazis don't bother about their people and they are into reckless killing games in the name of jihad.
Drone attacks are not enough. To reduce NATO forces losses, carpet bomb Paki militant areas just like 1991 Iraqi war.
Or else just get out right now.
After we get away from Afghanistan, forget Afghanistan and Pakistan. No reconstruction, "democracy", encouraging moderate Islamic elements and so on business please!!!!
Just Islam making it's daily contribution to the world and that is to blow somebody up. So advanced of them, too bad the only history books of the world they know is the Koran.
The Taliban are a terrorist group living in the past, along with their IDIOTIC idealogy. Everyone is tired of their use of terrorist activities, and are going to be put to death. The US and its allies have trained the Afghan people, funded them and armed them to the teeth. I am optimistic of the abilities of the Afghan people to fight for their own freedoms from the unevolved Taliban idiocracies.
