News studio in Cairo set ablaze after angry protest

/

People stand inside the burned-out studios of Al Jazeera in Cairo on Nov. 21.

CAIRO - A studio used by the Al Jazeera TV network in Cairo was set on fire on Wednesday in an attack that an employee said was carried out by a mob that had been chanting slogans against the Qatari-owned station.

The studio overlooks Tahrir Square and is located near the scene of violent clashes between youths and the security forces this week in which dozens of people have been injured. Those confrontations grew out of protests to mark the first anniversary of lethal street battles in the same area.

The first-floor office, used by for local Egyptian output by the channel, was badly damaged by fire.

The studio's windows were smashed and two empty bottles, which had apparently been converted into fire bombs, were found inside the office.

The Interior Ministry described the perpetrators as "trouble makers" who had attacked police officers when they had arrived to investigate, the state news agency reported. The public prosecutor has ordered an investigation.

"There were 200 to 250 people gathered outside the studio chanting against the channel," Ahmed Dessouki, a producer with the channel, told Reuters television.

WHY????? You people at MSNBC call yourselves journalists???? Who What When Where WHY!!!! and How!!! What were these "troublemakers" ticked off about? I'm disgusted that any news site would run an article like this. Go back to journalism school, if you ever attended in the first place.

I agree with you - This article says absolutely nothing about why the protesters were upset with the station. What prompted the demonstrations against the Al Jazeera network? Were they upset because Al Jazeera was telling the truth about who was responsible for the recent outbreak of violence in Gaza? Al Jazeera is usually very supportive of Muslims and their causes so what had the protesters so upset. Of course many times there does not need to be any real reason, you get a large enough group together and they just decide it is a good idea to burn something. It becomes about destruction for destruction's sake and nothing more.

The don't like the foreign, Qatari owners of the network which has been an issue with some of the local islamists. There was mention of that in the article if you have the reading comprehension to find it.

@Tetrapoda, Actually, JH & JS were correct. The article is unclear. It does not say they don't like the foreign, Qatari owners as you stated. It did say that the mob "had been chanting slogans against the Qatari-owned station". This could be because they didn't like them personally, or because the station did something that they disagreed with, or that that they don't like any foreign-owned business, or because they are upset with the Qatari government, etc. There really was very little clarity about the motive.

Methuen, sarcasm? All of the Arab States besides Iraq in Persian Gulf are supporters of Israel. All these rulers who originally came from Africa because of Islam, are puppets of us because the Jews in this country own the vain that let the flow of blood to this economy. We are watching people get jailed, deported from their homeland and even killed on daily basis in places like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and others, Israel taking Palestinian homes, farms and tore it up since 1968 and don't give it damn about democracy. It is really hypocrisy to be honest with you. Nathan Yahoo is really is not doing any service to the people of Israel. Yes, no one likes to be showered by rockets day and night, but by the same talking, no one like to be jailed for so long no matter how big it is. Gaza is just a big jail. I love Jewish people specially the ones from Iran but I hate the Israelis thinking that might could resolve all their problems. It won't.

I love when the U.N. or anyone asks Israel to show restraint. That is all they have been doing for years is showing restraint. Israel could wipe out all of these palestinians in a few days but they don't. That is showing restraint. The islamics fight in cowardly ways. Firing rockets at civilians and blowing up things. Why don't the Palestinians actually take up arms and try to invade Israel? They can't! Even in their greater numbers they are no match for the superior intelect of the Israelis.

Yeah the government considers them "troublemakers" as they were allowed to attack policemen.. If they seriously wanted it to stop, the policemen would have shot them. The new Obama sponsored government of Egypt is directly supporting terrorism in and out of Egypt, looking to help start WWIII along with Iran by attacking Israel and will try to shut down any criticism by an means possible.

Bijougri, get life please. I guess it is Obama's fault when the butcher of Jerusalem assassinate an Arab leader. Israel's act is worst than the Nazis. Because you are Jewish does not make it right for you and wrong for the Nazis. If what they were doing was wrong that I believe it was, what Israel has been doing to the Palestinians all these years is worse. Two wrongs won't make it right.

When it came to the reason for the protest the article was spot on. I couldn't believe the accuracy when the writer told exactly why they were protesting the news station. It was infuriating enough that some or maybe perhaps only one of them set the place on fire with --------or it could have been --------- and it caused a lot of damage too.
