Israel arrests suspects in Tel Aviv bus bombing

An Israeli policeman stands above shoes and clothes from a victim at the scene of an explosion on a bus in central Tel Aviv, Israel, Nov. 21.

Israeli authorities arrested an Israeli Arab on suspicion of planting a bomb in a Tel Aviv bus that wounded 15 people hours before Israel agreed a cease-fire with Hamas in Gaza, police and security officials said on Thursday.

The Arab citizen of Israel was detained on Wednesday night, they said. Also arrested, police said, were a number of Palestinians affiliated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on suspicion of having recruited the Israeli Arab to carry out the bombing.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld did not give names or an exact number of how many people were in custody.

He said the Israeli Arab notified his Palestinian handlers in the West Bank when the bomb was in place on the commuter bus, and they then detonated the device with a mobile phone.

"The investigation is still under way, and other arrests are expected," the Shin Bet internal security service said in a statement.

Wednesday's bus bombing had raised the possibility that Palestinians had slipped in from the nearby West Bank to carry out the attack.

Some residents of Israel close to Gaza say deals brokered with Hamas in the past have fallen through, and they worry this one will, too. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

While Hamas rules Gaza, a fenced-off enclave under Israeli blockade, the U.S.-backed Palestinian Authority governs in parts of the West Bank not under Israeli occupation. But many of its residents are sympathetic with his Islamist Hamas rivals who govern Gaza and reject permanent peace with the Jewish state.

After cease-fire, both sides claim victory

Earlier on Thursday, the Israeli army said that 55 suspected Palestinian militants had been arrested in the West Bank, citing a need to maintain calm after a truce ended the Gaza fighting.

The detainees were from various armed Palestinian factions and included "senior operatives," the army said in a statement, adding that it would "continue to maintain order ... and prevent the infiltration of terrorists into Israeli communities".

Hamas declares a national holiday after the cease-fire with Israel, but sees the halt in fighting as a temporary solution. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Israel launched an air offensive against Hamas and other Gaza militant factions on Nov. 14 with the declared aim of stopping their rocket fire into the Jewish state. The sides entered an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire on Wednesday night.

During the Gaza conflict, two Palestinians were shot dead during anti-Israel demonstrations in the West Bank that turned into confrontations with the army.

According to NBC News, some 162 Palestinians died and more than 1,200 were wounded in the conflict; five Israelis were killed and 240 were wounded.

NBC staff and Reuters contributed to this report.

Israel's military said it had accomplished its objectives while Hamas claimed victory after the two sides exchanged deadly airstrikes and rocket attacks for over a week.

It is amazing how delusional these Hamas idiots are. They are trying to claim that the cease fire is a victory for them, like they forced the Israelis to stop shooting at them. The reality is that Israel would prefer not to have to shoot and only did what they did in response to the persistent rocket attacks on southern Israel originating from Gaza. Israel's only goal in bombing Gaza was to put a stop to the rocket attacks. Of course what the news media is not reporting is that Hamas, or some other Palestinian idiot in Gaza has already violated the cease fire. Since the cease fire took effect there have been five rockets launched from Gaza into southern Israel. Not wanting to start things up again the Israelis have ignored these few rockets since they did not hit anything. I guess the Israelis are hoping it was just a few idiots who had not gotten the word to stop shooting and that these few rockets will be the end of it. Of course it is far more likely that sporadic rocket fire will continue and that it will slowly ramp up, with Hamas testing jut how far they can push, until the Israelis once again decide they have had enough and start shooting back again. This game will continue, with the frequency and number of rockets fired increasing, until Israel finally decided they have had enough and refuses the agree to a future cease fire and completely wipes out Hamas. So long as there are Hamas terrorists alive they will shot at Israel, it is so ingrained into their beliefs that they simply can not help themselves. The violence will only end on a permanent basis when the group on one side of the conflict ceases to exist.

Destruction is easy. Creating and nuturing are work. What a difference between the Israelis and those who wish Her harm. For those of good will, the side to support should be obvious.

Israeli Arab: Um, I just want my 72 virgins! Where do I sign up?

Terrorists: Another fool to do our bidding for us…hahaha

Isreal will stop the rockets, but the snipers will continue to kill civilians like they have for 50 years. eventually enough people will get pissed off and shoot more rockets in futile revenge and Isreal will say "poor me, poor me" and attack again. You wanna see this end. Put cameras that show 24 hours a day all the entry points into Gaza , also all the towns of West bank. place cameras at all the wells in the west bank so you can see how they are controlled by Isreal. Put cameras at the check points where arabs are denied access to their farm lands just in time for harvest so isreal can get better prices for their crops. Watch the ports that block the shipping of produce from Gaza so the food can spoil. then you will see what the Palestinians have seen for 50 years. Then you will know the heart of Isreal, or lack there of.

Yeah, the Jews have been doing it for fifty years in retaliation for civilian bus bombings, mortor attacks, kidnaps and beheadings that the muslims in the area and from Iran have been throwing at them for 2000 years.

Hamas had a victory. The death of an Israeli Jew, any Israeli is a goal achieved, and cause for celebration. The Israelis have no such goal. Their attacks are a response. When they kill a civilian they see it as a defeat in a way. But like any sentient life form on planet earth, they place their own self defence as paramount, and thus they suffered more than 100 defeats.

Hamas achieved their two goals, the first goal of killing unbelievers, and the second goal was to distribute photo ops of damage and mourning as the Israeli's responded. If you don't grant them victory, then as an unbeliever, you are an Islamophobe. They are faithful practising Muslims, with an Allah given mandate to kill, plunder, or enslave unbelievers, and to honor martyrs who die in the attempt. They have the explicit support of the entire Islamic world. And if you are a muslim and want to make peace, you will be killed as a traitor or an apostate.

Good job Hamas and Iran! You have a victory! We acknowledge your great and glorious accomplishment, and history will record your deeds for posterity. But the world has a choice in writing that history. It will either be the objective truth, or another hadith extoling how Allah vanquished his unbelieving foes by smiting necks and chopping fingers.

This battle is not just about Israel. Its about the Byzantine Christians, the Coptic Christians, the Assyrian Christians, the Visogoths Christians, the Persian Zoroastrians, the Punjab Hindus, the Bamiyan Buddhists, and the multitudes of other religious persuasion.

      George - nice ignorant rant.

How do you "win" something hat's being offered to you ?

From Ben Gurion in '48, through last year at the U.N., Israel has ALWAYS agreed to the 2-state solution. It is the Arabs (in '48 they rejected it), up to NOW, who refuse a 2-statesolution.

Perhaps you dont know (ignorance IS bliss) that Afarfat was offered 90% of his demands, and refused.

Perhaps you dont know (you're a VERY blissful person) That Hammas, Hezbollah, Iran and Syria STIL do not call for "peace" with Israel, but, rather, its complete destruction.

It sound to me like what you mean by "win their independence", is actually the complete destruction of Israel. I wish YOU werent a coward and just came out and SAID it. Let me exemplify:

      1. Assume for the moment that you say that the Pals are within their rights to kill civilians because Israel "took their land", ok ? WHICH land ?

You would answer "Gaza & West Bank", right ?

OK...so, you would then say that if G & WB were returned, there would be peace, right ? to which the response is "well, gee - Hammas, Hezbollah, Iran and Syria have NEVER said that...so, why should we believe YOU ?

      2. But...we BOTH know the REAL argument, dont we, George ? You, and those of your ilk, believe that the ENTIRE Israel is built on land "stolen" from the Pals and given to Israel, by the U.N. and Britain; thus, if the Pals are within their rights to kill civilians because the W.B and Gaza were illegally taken, then the same justification exists, once the "territories" are returned, to continue the exact same fight under the exact same philosophy.

Please, George - show us some STONES and tell us how you REALLY feel - bestow upon us the fruits of your intelligence.

It may be caused by Muslims but only by those who don't really believe their own holy book. If they believed the whole of their Qur'an, and understood the historical background of each Surah, they would not be doing as they are. You cannot paint all Muslims with such a broad brush.

You omitted the very specific historical contexts that limit interpretation of these Ayat of the Qur'an, just as the extremists do. I suggest a careful reading rather than mere quoting the standard, out-of-context, proof texts.

Palestinian handlers??? Was the terrorist a dog obeying his masters???

Seems that the jihadists enjoy targeting defenseless civilians. (9/11 anyone???) Guess it would be too much trouble to engage an actual military force. Way easier to blow up a bus.

Since Israel has made arrests, will the suspects be forced to lay in the street, shot to death in front of children and their dead bodies towed behind a moving vehicle or will there be an investigation, trial and sentence if found guilty???

No, the suspect will go to the same concentration camp that tens of thousands of palestinians are in now. guilty or not, he will be beaten every day, not given a hearing or trial, and if they find out he's the wrong guy, they will continue to beat him and keep him imprisoned. People who have hope and a peaceful life with self determination and a fair justice system, RARELY BECOME TERRORISTS.

Oh, I know. There is a lot of that going on. Israeli offered to move them in and integrate them in the settlements. They refused. Then, Israel offered to help them settle elsewhere and offered monetary incentives to help them. They refused again.

Another incident that occurred some years ago was when the IDF accidentally blew up a Palestinian shop while taking down an enemy. The State offered to pay for it and rebuild. The owners refused and instead turned it into a museum of Israeli atrocities committed against the store owners and other Palestinians. Pitiful and typical. It makes for good propaganda.

Trial and sentence will be the way of Israel. It is highly unlikely they will receive the death penalty for their crime. So far as I am aware and can recollect, Israel has applied the death penalty only once, and this has never been for acts of terrorism.

Israel is nothing but a liability to the US and an enormous drain of our resources. We continuously pour money in this horrible country to pay for their settlements that the world has declared as illegal and oppressive.
Our government gives them whatever they want because Jews control the FED and our congress is under the influence of AIPAC. Jews, Muslim haters and Christian Fundamentalists will not agree, but this is the way it really is. The needs of my country come first, even above God's supposed chosen people. Just because many people have valid reasons not to like Muslims is not a justification to kiss Israel's ass in blind support. This is how we are being manipulated and most of you are sheep and easily will follow without putting any real thought into what is happening. The best thing that could happen for the US is that Iran removes Israel from the planet and rids the US of its biggest parasite without starting WWIII.

We aren't falling for your Pallywood claptrap anymore. Israel has no desire for genocide. In fact, their Torah and Tana"kh teach that the Gentiles will be a part of history in the time of Messiah. You can't fulfill such prophecies if there are no Gentiles left. Try to think it through instead of trusting in Hamas propaganda.

By the way, Allah says that the Holy Land (the environment surrounding al-Masjidil-'Aqsal-ladhi) was given to the Bani Isra'il by Allah. See Al Isra' 1- and 101-104. Do you truly believe what you believe is the word of Allah? If so, then do something about instead of being part of the problem.

Step up these kind of attacks, now it's time for air force strikes into Gaza and the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which the militant muslims use as their headquarters, then send in the armored and infantry battalions, and unify Israel....give the Jewish people their own sovereign state, still amongst many hostile nations, a state which was intended when we started giving them the land back (won in during world war I & II - do your homework people on the Ottoman Empire and the consequences of the Jewish people not having this tiny nation).

The muslim holy city by the way, is not Jerusalem. It's Mecca, (Which a non-muslim cannot even fly over in an airplane...forbidden...the religion of peace you know, go head, try and go there, all you non muslims....), which is in Saudi Arabia (in which is a nation that has a punishment for any non muslim which prays - the death penalty.)

Ask yourself ... How does Islam, Muhammed, claim that on the Temple Mount is an Islamic holy spot, when the site had a Jewish Temple on hundreds of years before Islam was even created.

It all comes down to muslims being a militant religion, and wanting NOTHIING but Islam, everywhere.

Because Muslims believe that their particular non-existent deity created everything just for them. Therefore .... well, you know the rest ...

You are both wrong. Muslims count Jerusalem as the third holiest site of Islam because they believe Muhammad set foot there on the temple mount during his Night Journey. The Holy places of Islam (for the Sunni) are ranked as follows:

                          1. Makkah

                          2. Madinah

                          3. Jerusalem

Jesus said to his own disciple, all who take the sword perish by the sword, and Jesus sent out his disciples without swords to spread his Gospel, and Jesus says,he fulfils all the prophets, including the prophet Isaiah, and so Isaiah 2:4,God ends all wars--Jesus says those who seek to save their life will lose it, in wars man seeks to save his life, and loses it,but if you lose your life for my sake, says Jesus, you gain eternal life. Wars are not of God,but of men.

Jesus also told his followers to bring a couple swords with him when he went to pray in Gethsemane. Peter used one of them to whack off the ear of a servant in the struggle that occurred when a group of people came to arrest Jesus.

Unless Palestine "dumps" Hamas and denounces openly Hezbollah then peace is not going to happen

When enough is enough – Israel it is time to take off the gloves and defend your citizens - no holds barred

No sane country in the world would stand for hundreds of missiles fired at her citizens in a few days without an extreme response. The hell with world opinion or the leftist distorted Media. People respect a country that defends its citizens and not put it citizens in harms way.

This is the results of years of concessions by Israel. To the Palestinian Arabs a concession is a sign of weakness.

When Israel had the policy of retaliating with a heavy hand many years ago, this escalation would have never happened.

I would like to see us Americans tolerate hundreds of missiles coming at us across our borders and bombing our territories our schools and our homes.

The outcry by the American population would be respond with extreme power and stop the missiles, no matter what the cost.

In 1962 the Russians put missiles in Cuba without firing on the United States that almost started a nuclear World War 3.

At what point will Israel and its leaders realize that no matter what they do, it doesn't matter in the world's eyes and they need to stop trying to please the world and do what is necessary for the security and safety of its own people?

At this point I for one think that Israel needs to just take off the gloves and treat those who want war with exactly what they want. It's called survival.

Israel must complete the mission and destroy all terrorists arms along with the terrorists, no stopping until the mission is complete.

No cease fires until all the missiles are destroyed and no further missiles are allowed in Gaza.

Israel has the means to destroy Hamas. Why not destroy Hamas once and for all.

                                    Let the cleanup begin.

I strongly support an extremely strong action against terrorism and missiles.

                                    Incorrect.

While Israel DOES have the ability to destroy Hammas, to do that, they'd have to conduct a ground war, which means, first, heightened IDF casualties, and, second, HUGE Palestinian civilian casualties - and we know how the world would react.

I would like to see us Americans tolerate hundreds of missiles coming at us across our borders and bombing our territories our schools and our homes.

A nice sentiment, but, again, unreasonable. While correct, that neither the U.S. government, nor the people, would tolerate such a situation, it's "different" when it comes to Israel.

The unfortunate truth is, that Israel is doomed in ALL scenarios other than Moshiac (Massiah).

                                    Scenarios:

                                    1. No further military actions for 15 years.

Result: Arabs become the dominant population and take, control of Israel.

                                    2. War to end all wars.

Result: Israel wins, massive Palestinian casualties leading the world to embargo/blockade Israel, with other world governments backing the Arab countries in the quest to destroy Israel. Israel would not be able to withstand this, and, facing loss via conventional war, MUST resort to tactical war, which, in turn, would result in tacticals being used against her.

                                    3. Status Quo: Every few years, an uprising like last weeks:

Result: As the years go by, terrorists' weaponry gets more sophisticated. The next time, death will rain down on Tel Aviv and Jerusalem unlike what we've seen here - forcing Israel into Scenario # 2 above...with the same result.

And, remember - no matter which scenario, the Arabs are outbreeding the Israelis. Political correctness will keep Israel from taking any action to thwart the population boom - as Israel is already called an Apartheid state. Our world has NO problem with 17 "Islamic" states in the region, but scream bloody murder that Israel has the audacity to call itself (the sole) "Jewish" state.

Do the math, Yehuda. The Arabs simply have NO reason to work for peace. Egypt blockades Gaza because they are afraid of Muslim militants who also target Arab states who do not practice "Sharia". They are scared to death of a Palestinian state. All they have to do is bide their time and hey will get, through attrition, that which they havent been able to get via war...and Israel MUST act politically correct - much like the United States, who, likewise, must act politically correct. We, in the U.S., cannot search a Muslim getting on hte plane; we must let these Immamim preach their hate and grow terror within this country. We cant seal our borders from Latin America, and their population have already influenced this month's presidential election. 10% of our electorate is Latino - the Democrats pander to them...and it will only get worse...here, AND in Israel.

Israel can no more stem this tide, then the U.S. can prevent itself from becoming a Socialist nation. We (and Israel) are the cooking frog who sits in the pot as it gets hotter and hotter, unwilling to do what is necessary - for survival.

Absolutely correct. If Israel wanted to do so, they have the military hardware to level completely the entire Gaza strip and have enough left over to level the rest of the Middle East. And, they do not have to put a single boot on the ground. They also have a nuclear arsenal in addition.

But, that is not the desire of Israel. They just want to be left alone. If they put boots on the ground in Gaza, it would only be for the purpose of going on a search and destroy mission for Hamas individuals, while trying to avoid as many civilian casualties as possible. In that case, there would be higher casualties on the part of the IDF, but not nearly as high as Palestinian casualties would be in the Gaza Strip.

Result: Israel wins, massive Palestinian casualties leading the world to embargo/blockade Israel, with other world governments backing the Arab countries in the quest to destroy Israel. Israel also has a fallback position. They have a nuclear arsenal capable of turning the rest of the Middle East into glass and ashes if they even attempt to join together to destroy Israel. But, they won't use it unless they are backed into a corner and have no choice.

That's just it. if Israel ever USED her nucs, the rest of the world would destroy her.

I read a book in the 70's called "The Masada Plan"....it addresses this very scenario - highly recommended.

Also, what most ppl on here dont realize, when calling for the U.S. to stop arming Israel, is that, were the U.S. to do so, the Arabs (already outnumbering in soldiers) would have superior weapons (thank you Russia) and Israel's ONLY option would then be nuclear.

Indeed, they are between a rock and a hard place. I know Russia would get involved. They have already threatened to do so in the case of Syria, if the US got directly involved and committed troops on the ground. China also.
