The truce is strained when Israeli forces fire on a protest by Palestinians seeking access to fertile land close to the Gaza border. NBC's Ayman Moyheldin reports
CAIRO — It was no Black Friday in Gaza, where the cease-fire was in effect for a second day.
There was some bloodshed — Israeli soldiers fired on Palestinian farmers who wandered into the prohibited 'buffer zone' near the border check on their farmland — but otherwise the first phase of the truce has worked.
Now the difficult part begins: Turning a halt in hostilities into a better future for Palestinians and Israelis.
In the near term, that will mean hard negotiations mediated by Egypt’s Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
Israel insists on a stoppage of weapons smuggling through Gaza's Rafah border crossing with Egypt.
Hamas demands the lifting of the 6-year-old blockade of Gaza which some say has turned the strip into an "open prison".
Both sides this week agreed in principle to these concessions, but left the details for later. That could take a while, but what's different now is the presence of Morsi — backed by the United States — in the process.
A Palestinian farmer was killed and ten more were injured trying to reach farmland along the Israeli-Gaza border. The Israeli military is prohibiting farmers from reaching their land in the Palestinian side of the border, putting strain an already tense cease-fire agreement. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.
Although facing widespread criticism at home, where he is accused of a constitutional power grab, Morsi is a formidable mediator having been endorsed as a key regional player by President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Egyptian protesters, police clash as Morsi defends wide new powers
He's the leader of an Arab state with influence over radical Palestinian groups like Hamas, seems determined to be a U.S. ally and seeks a civil, if more formal, relationship with Israel.
So, rather than locking horns, separating, and reloading to fight another day, Israel and Hamas will at least have someone they respect to complain to.
The hope is that, over time, negotiations and not rocket fire or airstrikes will become the new habit of "discourse" between enemies. That could be a pipe dream unless Morsi, the Mediator, becomes Morsi, the Enforcer, as well. Will he crack down on the smuggling? Destroy the tunnels? Or will he side with his "ideological cousins" inside Hamas?
Fresh from winning praise for brokering the Gaza cease-fire, Mohammed Morsi sets Egyptian politics ablaze by granting himself sweeping new powers. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.
It's too soon to say. For now, few on either side of the Gaza border doubt that this truce will be short lived. As Gazans celebrated the end of their immediate suffering, a poll showed that 70 percent of Israelis disagree with the truce. After generations of bloodshed and crisis, mistrust is deeply entrenched.
It is significant that Obama seems to believe that Morsi can be the "missing link" that moves that moribund peace process forward. On Wednesday, when he thanked the Egyptian president for his "commitment to regional security" following the announcement of the cease-fire, Obama added that he and Morsi agreed to work towards a "more durable solution" to the situation in Gaza.
Morsi may be just the partner with leverage over the Palestinians that Obama needs to try his hand at Middle East peace-making himself.
But first, Morsi will have to prove he can enforce a cease-fire as deftly as he brokered one.

Sorry. I have nothing to say.
If Obama endorsed this guy, just watch out. Gawd.
The Muslim cockroach propaganda machine is working overtime now, really . . .
Really! :-o
Although facing widespread criticism at home, where he is accused of a constitutional power grab, Morsi is a formidable mediator.
I like how this article writes off Morsi's power grab as though it is no big deal. The guy literally overrode the entire constitution and granted himself almost absolute power. Whatever happened to the Arab Spring? Oh ya, that's right there is no Arab Spring. Just the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood.
http://johndoe2241225.newsvine.com/_news/2012/11/23/15378372-arab-spring-or-rise-of-the-muslim-brotherhood
Now that obama is in his last term , prepare for some unbelievable decision that will blow your mind, he is a closet Muslim and will do everything he can to protect the muslim brotherhood. This is a terrorist organization that was on the watch list by all intelligence agency and barrack hussien obama is supporting them...
clinton is leaving state department and he wants a far left socialist to run it "susan rice" and will push to get her nominated by blaming everything that happened in Benghazi on general petraus and insist that he was to blame after he testified that he notified valery jared it was a terrorist attack and the president who of course is denying it...
the plan of the socialist cause is too cause the western world governments to become bankrupt and ineffective and to become a third world dependent society to easier to control ....
John Doe-2241225 - Egypt does not have a constitution at this time. That is the problem. The newly elected officials, as a result of the Arab Spring uprising, promised to have a democratic constitution written within one year. The time limit is up. I do not know if Mr. Moursi is a good guy or a bad gay, he claims to what a democratic government. I don't trust him, but at this point I don't distrust him because he is putting pressure on the elected officials who were supposed to write the constitution.
I am willing to with hold my judgement until the next shoe drops. We will see. I know everybody hates Obama and Hillary but I have a sense that they lite a fire under Mr. Moursi to get the job done and he has lite a fire under the Congress to get the Constitution process finished. Mr. Obama is now signaling the world that since the peace deal between Israel and Hamas, Mr. Moursi is doing what he has been told to do.
Don't rely on the headlines at all. You know they are written to catch your attention. Read the State Departments statements carefully . . . it says alot more than you might think.
We all need to slow down and hold back our harsh judgements. We can always stop payment on the check and there is always the nuke. If I am wrong, you can remember me and tell me I told you so. I truly hope the Egyptian people get the democracy they have risked so much to have. A democratic Egypt will give great hope to muslims who are desiring reforms for their countries too. A democratic Egypt will also set the extremist and radicals into a pitch of fury we haven't seen yet.
This is not going to be easy and the American public is going to have to get used to the idea that international politics require a whole lot of holding your cards close to the vest and a whole lot of praying. Loose lips are no fun to kiss.
All you haters and lovers of Obama . . . you all need to start praying that Obama has wise counselors and that he makes wise decisions which always promote the safety and well fare of America. We are all in a big mess here and abroad. We need to put our personal feelings aside and actually work on the problem. Write your damn congressman, he doesn't have to answer you back. Putting your hate out here on these comment pages only creates more hate and gives the Islams tips on how to manipulate your emotions and gain your trust. Be careful what you say and how you say it. We are at war with terriorism . . . don't fall pry to the devices of propaganda simply because you can't be polite. Americans have to be on their toes we are dependant on each other to help keep each other safe.
Obama is not a good judge of character,Morsi has Riots in his Country because he is a Dictator and used his executive pen and gave himself sweeping rights over everyone and thing.....and their people are just waking up...When will America wake up and see what Obama really is and what he supports??
(1) Just research the Secretary of State's Chief Executive Officer's background and the Court Judges who have ruled to invoke Sharia Law into court cases.
(2) Texas "workplace violence" ring a bell ? Even the Obama administration has taken "TERRORISTS" out of their vocabulary.
(3) And, of course.....THIS ARTICLE.
Yep, these turkeys cannot win using outside forces, so they infiltrate within. The destruction of America will come from within, and our Congressional members aren't helping matters much with their daily bickering.
What is MSN coming to? Talk about inaccurate and biased reporting. Farmers wonder into fence and got shot? Why don't they tell the truth that this was a group of people that rushed the boarder guards in protest and the guards fired on them when they feared they would be overrun. There is not a boarder in this world where a mob would be able to advance upon boarder guards and if threatened would not deal with it the same way. Couldn't you for once tell the whole story!
I want to know where the article is about rockets being fired from Gaza into Israel after the cease fire.
Actually, john doe, if Egypt is currently writing a new constitution, I'm not certain that Morsi can be already overriding it.
From the American stand point, and of those who want peace in the Middle East, the question is moot. If Morsi is the man in charge in Egypt, and he is interested in brokering a peace agreement between Hamas and Israel, then he's the man we want to support. Period.
It would be nice if Egypt, a nation which never known anything other than authoritarian rule, became a true democracy. But are true desire for Egypt is that it remain a force for peace, and not for war.
So maybe your shrill cries are a trifle overblown.
We are stupid....
Article is more of wishful thinking than actual realities.
"Now the difficult part begins: Turning a halt in hostilities into a better future for Palestinians and Israelis."
It did not happen in decades and it is not going to happen in the near future.
Sunni Islamic madness is fast marching backwards to the seventh century desert days of raping, looting, stealing, killing, telling lies, trying to fool, breaking all truces, words, pacts and doing genocides when in majority.
Sunni Saudis and Pakis are culprits here.
In Gaza, Hamas is one front of Sunni Saudis.
In Egypt, another front of Sunni Saudis, MB has got control.
Morsi is not going to solve the problems. Instead he and his MB are going to be major problems.
Israel should right away clear Gaza of Hamas.
Morsi can do what he wants, however WE are not going to FUND it! Hit him where it hurts!!
Bibi was a fool to trust this guy!!
Morsi will be a bigger problem than Hamas. He is not going to be a solution.
http://www.youtube.com/user/idfnadesk
Mike it's OKay to come out from under your bed now. ALll those things you're so afraid of are alll IMAGINARY! That's right. THe president is not a Kenyan or a chinaman or a muslim or a lesbian. THese's only reality, as boring as it gets sometimes.
This article sounds like it was written by Morsi's press agent, not a reputable new organization. Those were not farmers checking their fields. There was a group of about 300 Palestinians approaching the border fence in a well established no man's land buffer zone that they well knew was off limits. The Israeli soldiers fired warning shots that the Palestinians ignored and they ket coming towards the fence. The Israeli soldiers were left with no choice but to start shooting or risk being overrun by this mob. The media needs to stop making excuses and pandering to the Muslims and start telling the truth about what is going on. The media has also been unbelievably silent about the five rockets that the Palestinians have fired into Israel from Gaza since th cease fire. Is this not something wrth reporting on. It is being ignored because it does not fit the media's agenda.
Morsi is not some great diplomat, he was not being very effective at all until the US backed him up. It was more fear of the US getting involved than Morsi's rhetoric that got Hamas to stop shooting rockets. Morsi has made a total power grab in Egypt and the media is trying to pass it off as no big deal. He has issued a decree that places himself above the law and the courts in Egypt, giving himself the ultimate authority to do whatever he wants without anyone being able to question it. This is not the behavior o a democratically elected leader, this is the behavior of a dictator. Morsi has blocked the judiciary from looking at the constitutional assembly because it is now made up entirely of Islamists. Those from othr parties have either been forced out or resigned because they are not being allowed to have any say and do not want to be associated with what is coming. The Islamists are writing the constitution in such a way as to ensure that they will maintain control of Egypt. They are even talking about making it a requirement that a candidate be a Muslim for them to be able to run for any public office. What is going on in Egypt is not about some transition from Mubarak's regime to a democratic government, it is about the Muslim Brotherhood making sure that now that they are in control that they never lose that control. You are seeing the replacement of what was a relatively benign, secular dictatorship with a radical Islamist one. This does not bode well for Egypt or the rest of the Middle East.
Obama's plan goes forward in uniting the Middle East as a islamist state dedicated in the destruction of the west and any one who does noty bow to thier ideas about religion!
i see the propaganda machine is in effect.
we must support him because he is "pivotal" in the mideast. we will just have to overlook how he basically just made himself king/pharaoh of Egypt.
The Muslim cockroach hive in Egypt is preparing to swarm, really . . .
Really! :-o
It is a rather schizo article. I think what happened was that the author first submitted an article basically praising Morsi for helping broker a cease fire. Then came this other news about Morsi firing the Chief Justice of Egypt's Supreme Court, declaring any judicial action on the new Constitution null and void, plus granting himself wide-ranging "emergency powers," and the author awkwardly tries to reconcile it all by re-writing that 'notwithstanding all the crap now going on inside Egypt,' Morsi is a new "pivotal" player (primarily) between Hamas and Israel.
Very clumsy and unconvincing but it seems that might be what happened.
You got it right.
See the double games played by the US "strategic allies" like Qatar, Turkey (a strong NATO ally), Sunni Saudi front Hamas in Gaza, Sunni Saudi MB in Egypt and Sunni Arab League rulers.
Most of them supported Sunni Saudi haters and killers, Hamas.
Just watch how quickly their dances change when it comes to Syria and Iran!
These biggest backstabbers and most ungrateful barbaric, beastly and bigoted Sunni Saudi and co rulers are the real culprits in Islamic march fast backwards to extremism.
It was most foolish of the US, British and allies to save these barbarians and bigoted beastly rulers from Saddam through Iraqi wars.
Just examine their contributions in Gaza, high oil price manipulations and the resultant economic mess and funding of Salaffi and Wahhabi mosques all over the world including the US.
For all these, one Saudi student wanted to use chemical weapons for his jihad in the US!
I'm glad there is a cease fire but worry about what is cost the American taxpayer. Sending billions to the middle east when we are broke just seems like a bad idea.
Yeah, something tells me that we're going to be on the hook for still more BILLIONS to Egypt now that it is coming apart at the seams again thanks to the administration's decision to throw a stable ally Mubarak under the bus for a predictably totalitarian new force [Muslim Brotherhood] and their figurehead which turns out to be even worse than Mubarak.
It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who was realistically watching that foolhardy "Arab Spring" nonsense unfold over the last two years. What we were actually doing, either knowingly or unwittingly, was simply replacing bad with worse, secular rulers with Islamic rulers. Why shouldn't we have learned our lesson back when the Ayatollah replaced the Shah in Iran. The Shah, like Mubarak, was no angel, but he was a modernizing force and he was secular. What came next, in no small part "thanks" to Jimmy Carter, was infinitely worse -- an Islamic Dictator (the Ayatollah Khomeini) implacably hostile to America, the West, and all notions of modern, secular, enlightened government.
Adam, US power is limited. We sometimes have to make choices that have the goal of simply minimizing losses.
One thing that seems to remain constant in the ME: "If not ruled with an iron fist, not long ruled".
Appraiser-511603.....
Just wait until an un-named, un-disclosed, anonymous, high ranking Obama administration official LEAKS how much American taxpayer dollars Mrs. Clinton promised Morsi if he "brokered" a peace deal.
At least Iraqi wars, Afghan war and Libyan intervention must have some war mongers lessons.
We should learn from the past. KEEP AWAY FROM SYRIA AND IRAN. THEY ARE NONE OF OUR BUSINESS.
ALSO REMOVE SANCTIONS ON IRANIAN OIL. Iran's WMDs are no big deal as they can get nukes from Pak too.
Followers of Islamic cult, especially Sunni Saudi inspired Islamic radicals and militants (al-Qaida, Salaffi, Wahhabi, MB, Taliban and other label ones), are fast marching backwards to their seventh century desert tribal days.
They are indulging in rapings, lootings, killings and genocides of non-Muslims (Darfur, S. Sudan, Nigeria and spreading like wild fire in many regions and Muslims (Libya, Yemen, Mali, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan and other places).
In Egypt, Sunni Saudi backed Salaffi and MB are opening up new chapters of Islamic bigotry. Morsi is just a front for them. Just watch the fate of Christians, women and Israel as the time goes by.
Even in Syria, if Assad is overthrown by Sunni Islamic religious Nazis like al-Qaida, MB, the conditions of Christians will be unbearable just like Iraq.
Pakis and Sunni Saudis and co are responsible for 80 percent of world problems including economic ones. Examine the devastations with Iraqi wars and now sanctions on Iranian oil and the resultant oil price manipulations.
They are making the lives of their own people also miserable by their Islamic religious madness to the intolerable levels.
Mubarak was a military dictator that was removed by his own people. Even his own military did not support him and stood by doing nothing. Would you have preferred they open fire on the protesters in the streets and kill thousands? I think you mistake stability with totalitarian repression. Like it or not Morsi won a democratic election. Now the problem is setting up a stable democratic government. Until then someone has to be in charge. Morsi won't please everyone. Like any leader can? Currently he has the military, US funding and Egyptian intelligentsia constraining him. He may turn out to be a Muslim extremist, he may not. Getting the shooting to stop is necessary to make any progress. By far Egypt is the most populous country in the Middle East and a major player whether we like it or not. Without Egypt there will be no peace. Extreme poverty is the problem. 28% of Egyptians can't read and write
Adam nailed it (his previous post as well).
I just absolutely love how our current administration bent over backwards to support the democratic process of change in Egypt, and then when a Muslim Brotherhood member is made president who thinks that all women should have to submit to a virgin verification process, they toss up their hands and say it isn't their fault the people chose a radical. Way to go White House!
We know that republicans think democracy is good only when they like the results.
Baloney. Shame on you.
Yeah Jimmy ... when women are forced to wear Burqua's and not allowed to attend school just becasue they are women ... OBAMA and the liberal drive-by media will say this was really ROMNEY's idea.
Jim is absolutely right.
Iraqi wars saved the most ungrateful and biggest backstabbers, Sunni House of Saud, Kuwait, UAE and other Sunni Arab rulers.
Their own Islamic madness is going to eliminate them. Even the US and allies can't do much as we are badly crippled with Iraqi wars, Afghan war and Libyan experiences.
House of Saud, a strict Wahhabi, is not even tolerating Prophet Mohammad’s heritage places. House of Saud consists of a megalomaniac, despotic and bigoted ruler and highly corrupt, despotic, bigoted seventh century mindset 5000 princes and princesses.
In Mecca, the house of one of the wives of Mohammed was demolished and converted into public lavatories. Mohammed’s birth place may vanish with plans to have skyscrapers, mega shopping malls and a Grand mosque!
In Medina, ten years ago a mosque of grandson of Mohammed was dynamited and the religious police were celebrating on this. There are plans to pull down three seventh century mosques in future.
When their own Allah is furious with them, how any one can save them!
Yes, it is a horrible idea to send extra cash to these folks in the Middle East. If they cannot stand on their own after being a country for thousands of years, perhaps it is time for them to be absorbed into their neighboring countries. Hmmmmmm!
Sure enough Morsi is still being backed by liberal media. How in the h*ll will he be a formidable mediator when his own people are protesting against his new "pharoah" status. This is just plain "dumb" journalistic opinion and has no basis in fact.
one great difference between the US and Egypt we can voice our opinion even if it is wrong- liberaljournalism has nothing to do with mediation
the pieces start to fit together. Jill Kelly, a Lebanese housewife, gets access to the White House and is linked to General Allen, Commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan. She hosts a dinner party with the King of Jordan and hosts another function with VIP'S from Afghanistan, Nepal and Pakistan. She gets involved in a Koran burning scandal in Tampa, a hotbed of Muslim activism
Meanwhile, Obama's close adviser is Iranian born Valerie Jarrett and Obama's father is a Muslim. Now the U.S. is supporting the volatile Muslim Brotherhood.
jw,
I think you need a break from drawing connections that are not there, you are steadily killing off brain cells; at least that is how it looks because your posts are getting increasingly crazy.
Who really knows where the tipping points are in the Middle East? Recent developments have been sudden and surprising. Consider how unexpected was the fall of the Berlin wall despite presumably capable intelligence assets on the ground.
It may have been a mistake to elevate the unproven Morsi's status as an opposite to Secretary Clinton. Israel and Hamas ought to be negotiating directly-true bilateral negotiations-without American and Egyptian intermediaries.
American negotiators have been on a fools errand for fifty years. American mediation seems to get nothing accomplished other than having Uncle Sucker paying billions to perpetuate the charade of "agreements".
Whatever the Americans propose will never be good enough, due to the hard liners on both sides who will never accept less than a whole loaf.
The adjudication of the two-or three-state solution ought to be turned over to the World Court or to a body of better qualified international jurists.
No matter how reliable one thinks his intelligence is and how confident one is about the ability to execute plans, the unexpected occurs. In a volatile situation, the injection of violence can quickly perpetuate more violence.
"Despite troubles at home, Egypt's Morsi is pivotal player in Mideast"
What a slant from Jim Macena. The bottom line is that Morsi represents closet radicals and the Obama administration knew it from the beginning. He was going to get in and they new that as well. He only agreed to press a cease fire so he could be guaranteed the countries billions from the US. Dems and Repubs alike continue to give them money...and for what? Stop giving them billions and let them take care of themselves. And let Israel take care of the Palestinian problem. If the US was be hit with 200 missiles a day from Mexico, do you think we would agree to a cease fire. We go in and invade countries and dictators when we get hit on 911. Let the Israelis defend their land and treat Ham-mas for what they are true terrorists.
Glad to see the right wing crazies are here and shooting their mouths off about stuff they don't understand.
Thanks, Chief. Well said.
Chief, looks like some folks who hope to inflame are out to get you. We have your back!
No dumbass we see everything going on and do understand. I see a USA going in the toilet because of liberals like you that want to live in a free society. Have everything handed to you because you cant get out and work for it yourself. you want want us to pay for your healthcare, your unemployment your welfare check. Open our borders to who ever wants to get in here every way they can except for the legal way. Your cowards that turn your back because you dont know how to fight for yourself. So I totally understand you clown, I understand I only get 65% of my hard earned income because your president says we are taking money from people that didnt vote for me and giving to those who did. Liberalism is a mental disorder and you people are a threat to this country. So when you work the hours I do to make a living you might and I say might understand what a dollar means. But you go back to your union job, take 3 breaks a day on a 9-5 job come home and tell me what we dont understand.
Toxic shooting off of the mouth is what the tea billy GOP does best... boy, are we going to enjoy getting the house back in 2014!
Don't throw in the towel yet. We can always stop payment on the check or send them a nuke . Lets see if the Egyptian Congress does what they promised they would do - write a democratic constitution. If Egypt gets a democratic constitution - there will be loud reprecussions from the radicals.
Remember, we don't know any of the people who are protesting or what their real motives are. We need to walk softly and carry a big stick. We need to wait and see what is going to happen before we chop off any heads. In politics, you really don't know what's going on just by looking in the window . . . you have to be there on the scene . . actually involved . . . we need to use our patients not our emotion.
Jim.....it might help to argue your point rather than just calling names....if you can.
caljam71 - probably wouldn't. See, I think that as DNA testing becomes more sophisticated, they will find that democrats and republicans are a slightly different species. Like they did with chimpanzees and bonobos. Chimpanzees are violent, unpredictable and the males totally dominate the females – like republicans. Bonobos are more calm, civilized and the males and females are more equal like -democrats. Chimpanzees and bonobos can cross breed like democrats and republicans but it’s a bad idea as the kids turn out weird. And I'm not sure that any meaningful communication between democrats and what the republicans have become is possible.
Critical times hard to deal with, will be here.
So our Dear Leader has "pivoted" from a secular anti-democratic tyrant to a mystic anti-democratic tyrant, and we say that's better? Criminals want to enjoy this world; Jihadis want to die well. We can't do business with Morsi, and he's no doubt playing us.
I agree with your post except for Morsi being some kind of mystic. If only! He is guided by his MB agenda to make Islam Supreme and that makes him a semi-closeted Islamic dictator wannabe. That's why he is attacking the court system in Egypt because it is the only thing preventing the Islamification of Egypt's new Constitution, i.e. installing Islamic Sharia Law as the centerpiece of all Egyptian law.
Islam has been dominated by mystics ever since the writings of al-Ghazali, 900 years ago. Their once-great culture has declined, decayed, collapsed and gone mindless. They were revived economically when the Brits and Americans found oil in the Arab/Muslim countries. Local warlords have nationalized the oil and paid for worldwide Jihad ever since.
Peikovian. what do you mean by "mystic" then?
Morsi want to institute Sharia law. How could that possibly be a problem for the US?
Yup, he wants that in the new Egyptian Constitution and that's why he is dismantling Egypt's secular court system because that's the only thing standing between Sharia Law and the new Constitution.
And yet - gotta keep the US aid coming, hence the hero tag from Obama and NBC.
I wonder if we should let all these middle east countries go their own way..obviously they don't want democracy and I hate to see us waste our men and money over there
once again we prop up another dictator who will support our interests for a little while before they go rouge- regrdless of what party holds the white house it is the same old "politics" as ususal
Another account of our fearless leader showing he is still nothing but a rookie.
Perhaps he would benefit by attending foreign policy meetings, instead of golfing.
Obama and his administration seem to back the extreme muslim sects in countries that have been more moderate up to now. Just look at Egypt, Jemen, Libya and now Syria. All of these countries' leaders have kept the muslim brotherhood away from power but Obama called them dictators. What was discussed and agreed upon between Obama and the muslim brotherhood when he had them in the White House and treated them like honored guests?
Muslium Bro-hood at the White House: Someone was probley on their knees again... bowing down of course, and asking forgiveness for anything America may have done to them, and then set them up with a Lease to Own America.
Morisi's true goal may be to change Egypt to a radical Muslim state like Iran or and extend the Muslim Crescent from Turkey to Pakistan to Morocco, and the liberals said don't worry.
OBAMA announces the ARAB SPRING will not be arriving anytime soon ... much like the SHOVEL READY JOB$.
and over three years of right wing obstructionism... blocking pretty much everything... wonder how that fiscal cliff thing will turn out?!
A wiki paste for lefty
earliest known occurrence is as an unsourced attribution to Alexander Fraser Tytler "This is the Hard Core of Freedom" by Elmer T. Peterson in The Daily Oklahoman (9 December 1951): "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy."
It was Joseph de Maistre who wrote in 1811 "Every nation gets the government it deserves."
The Demos block just as much too... so why aren't you outraged about them? The demos are just as responsible as the repubs for this cliff. They both own it
OBAMA will send Jo(K)e Biden to Egypt with a strongly worded letter.
Unbelievable bunch of ignorance posted on this site. Go learn something about the history of the Middle East before you spout off.
just goes to show, how 'stupid' the american people are!!!!!!!!
they keep allowing their govt to borrow money from china at their expense, to give more gifts to countries that hate them and they will use it against them and their families when they try to take america down !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
whether your on the take or you work for what you make, your govt is screwing you and you keep taking it...
now that's what i call smart leaders, they have the people so dumb and playing the same games they do. so they can keep screwing you and nobody does anything about it other than blame the other party...
just goes to show, after billions and billions of wasted dollars they put the same crooks back in...
I'm not a fan of the President's, but I can't blame him for what's happening in the ME. Morsi did what Mubarak used to do, he'd step in, calm the situation, then clamp down in his own country while the world praised Egypt for playing the role of peace broker. That's what our billions buy us, the ability to get whoever runs Egypt to restrain Hamas. It remains to be seen if we've gone from dealing with a dictator to an Islamic fundamentalist, and what he really intends for Egypt.
Because of where Israel is located, we're forced to play ball with whomever we can find in the region that has the clout to broker a cease fire like we have now. Libya, Egypt, Syria if Assad falls, and maybe Iraq could all come under the sphere of influence of Iran, who is seeking nuclear weapons. Those ME countries who do not wish to see this, or want to maintain their own dictatorships may finally have to get off the bench. I'd be shocked if we weren't knee deep in total war in the ME in the next five years.
Good to see the right wing baby ass, sour grapin' is still going on...
We will never be able to fix all the problems there are in the middle east...
Yeah, well a lot of us would settle for not making things worse. President Obama and his administration are making things worse, Egypt and Libya being prime exhibits A and B.
The opinion of the toxic political right means nothing to me...
Five posts in here and you've still written absolutely nothing that shows that you have a single clue about what is happening in Egypt or the Mideast in general. All you've shown so far is the shallow zealotry of a political hack.
.......Good to see the right wing baby ass, sour grapin' is still going on...
You don't have to be "right wing" to recognize the disgrace that is President Stinky (BO). Stinks is by far the worst president this country has ever seen! And I voted Dem from carter(2x) to kerry. I deeply regret carter.
@leftward bound: "The opinion of the toxic political right means nothing to me..."
Every single one of your comments here summed up: LALALALALALALALA I'M NOT LISTENING. Very mature.
It's nice to know that we can have some great dialogue here and exchange opinions in a civil manner. Criticizing Obama's Middle East policies doesn't have to be a partisan issue. Morsi himself said he would reestablish Sharia Law. Why would anyone in their right mind give him the time of day or even begin to legitimize him?
The people that voted for Obama a second time around should be very proud of him now, just like Michelle. To stop Israel from doing the job it started Obama sends Hillary to broker a deal with the devil himself. The new self proclaimed Pharaoh of Egypt. No wonder why the Palestinians are claiming victory they have an open border now. Now, is a good time for Israel to pull up the rest of those troops because Obama is best friends with their enemy.
After Benghazi I didn't think it could possibly get worse but here it is. Do you think Obama used any new flexibility when in talks with Morsi? A big news day Obama and Hillary saves the day and loses the war. One bunch of lunatics you people put back into office. Extreme Islam is alive in well in Egypt and Gaza now. What about the peace prize I wonder who will get or pay for that baby this time around?
Ha, ha life is grand!!!
President Stinky (BO) should keep the award and nobody should ask for it back. Al Gore beat a woman who had her arms and legs broken by nazis when she was caught smuggling Jewish children out of Germany for his prize. Yessir Imarat, the terrorist leader of a group of terrorists near Israel, who died of aids (thankfully) got one. They gave one to Jimmy Carter, the second worst president fo the united States.
Let Stinks keep his, he's in grand company!!
No farming for you! Farming is a danger to national security. Shoot farmers on site. That's how advanced societies deal with dangers of pesticide. We must support organic free trade. Palestinian farms are not certified organic, so shoot all tomatoes on site!
they couldn't refuse the free gifts they think they will be keeping forever...
