Israel's Defense Minister Barak resigns from politics

Nir Elias / Reuters

Israel's Defence Minister Ehud Barak announced his resignation from politics at a news conference in Tel Aviv on Monday. A former prime minister, he has served as defense minister since 2007.

JERUSALEM - Defense Minister Ehud Barak, a main architect of Israel's policy toward Iran's nuclear program, said in a surprise announcement on Monday that he was quitting politics and would not run in the Jan. 22 national election.

"I have decided to retire from political life and not to run for the next Knesset ... I will end my term as defense minister once the next government is established, in about three months," he told a news conference.

"I want to dedicate more time to my family. I feel I have exhausted dealing with political life, which has never been a passion of mine, and I feel there is room to allow other people to serve in senior roles in Israel," he said.

ANALYSIS: It may not be over for Israel’s Barak

Opinion polls had predicted a poor showing for the small centrist Independence party that Barak currently leads, but recently indicated that voter support had strengthened as a result of Israel's eight-day offensive in the Gaza Strip that ended in a cease-fire on Wednesday.

Barak, 70, has been a key player in Israel's tough policy toward curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions and has been Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's unofficial envoy to Washington in order to smooth over differences with the Obama White House. However, the two, who enjoyed a close working relationship for most of the past four years, have reportedly fallen out over whether to defer to the U.S. on any attack against Iranian nuclear facilities.

Americans tied to Israel caught in the chaos of Gaza conflict

He has been defense minister since 2007 and served as prime minister from the Labor party from 1999 to 2001.

Before getting involved in politics, Barak was an army commando who rose to the highest ranks of the military, becoming Israel's most decorated soldier. As prime minister, he initiated Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000. Then, two years after becoming prime minister, he lost an election to Ariel Sharon.

After his resignation, Barak says he plans to "study, to write, to live and have a good time."

Israel's military said it had accomplished its objectives while Hamas claimed victory after the two sides exchanged deadly airstrikes and rocket attacks for over a week.

Ehud Barak will be missed in Israel public life I am sure. But also on the international stage as a voice of moderation.

He looks young for 70 as an aside.

I wonder how much of his leaving is unreconsilable differences with Right wing Netanyahu. He was part of their government because they had a coelition Government...they have a parlimentary democracy like the UK as far as I know.

This is quite important, and may have a huge impact on Iran's motivations to continue its efforts towards finishing the second stage of plutonium production. It had been stated Iran is only a month away from completing that part. Once done, it will only take weeks to complete stage three before it has all it needs to put together a nuclear weapon. As was pointed out not long ago at the United Nations meeting, Iran must not be allowed to complete stage two. Israel was trying to get the world to apply pressure to stop this from happening.

A nuclear bomb detonated in any country would leave the fall out to spread to other nations. Iran would end up with enough material to make not just one bomb, but more. It also would be able to sell that material to other countries. Including terrorists, who could ship it to the United States for use against us. So it is in our best interests to not let Iran finish production of stage two.

President Obama was expected after being invited, join the other UN officials during their meeting in October to show his support on this matter. But he was too busy campaigning to bother taking time out. In fact, he never met with any foreign leaders the whole year until this week and then went to Asia.

As prime minister, he sought to conclude a permanent peace accord with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, initiating and participating in 2000′s abortive negotiations at Camp David hosted by US president Bill Clinton. Rebuffed by Arafat after offering an Israeli withdrawal from almost all of the West Bank, Barak later said he had “removed the mask” from Arafat, exposing the Palestinian leader as unwilling to agree to the compromises necessary for a viable two-state solution.

He knows now that the west will not stop Iran from gaining Nuclear weapons, they now are only a month or two away from having all the parts to start putting them together; once Hillary gave in to the Morsi hardliners he knew that Israel will have to go it alone, he does not want to be there when they finally attack, Israel will have to use Nuclear weapons to destroy the Iranian bomb factory's; the mid-east is about to go up in flames!

Hey Saxon - Read this. Where do you get your info? A month or two away, is more Zionist propaganda.

January 2011: When
Meir Dagan steps down as director of Israel’s Mossad spy agency, he says that
Iran would not be able to produce a nuclear weapon until 2015. "Israel
should not hasten to attack Iran, doing so only when the sword is upon its
neck," Mr. Dagan warned. Later he said that attacking Iran would be
"a stupid idea.... The regional challenge that Israel would face would be
impossible."

Great, he's finally realized the Netanyahu lies for what they are!!!

You people are something, let's see, taking from your comment above, how long will it take Israel to build a nuclear weapon, oh hell, never mind, I forgot, Israel has hundreds already. Iran should have the right to protect it's citizens, and country just as Israel, but no, people like you believe only Israel and America should be able to defend themselves. Such hypocrites you people are.

Netanyahu want's Iran for it's vast oil reserves, and their land....

Ralph H; from the Nuclear regulatory inspection, they said that Iran is much further along than they had realized; our own defense analysis now say only a matter of months for Iran; I have no idea what Israel will do, but if they do attack the fallout will be much bigger than Chernobyl, we are in very dangerous times.

Moshuluu, you're such a sheeple. I have absolutely no problem with only us and Israel having nuclear weapons. It is in my best interest that the world would be so constructed. However, since it isn't so constructed, I then have no problems with restricting moronic extremist regimes like Iran from getting those weapons. It is in my best interest.

There is nothing wrong with my promoting my best interest, just like people like you trying to promote your own. Hopefully, my side wins.

Saxon - Post a link to support your claim or else post a retraction and apology. "Further along", means nothing. The IAEA monitors Iran's nuclear enrichment and they have not gone beyond 20%. That is a fact. Read this.

WASHINGTON, Sep 1
2012 (IPS) - The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report made public
Thursday reveals that Iran has actually reduced the amount of 20-percent
enriched uranium available for any possible "breakout" to weapons
grade enrichment over the last three months rather than increasing it.

Contrary to the
impression conveyed by most news media coverage, the report provides new
evidence that Iran's enrichment strategy is aimed at enhancing its bargaining
position in negotiations with the United States rather than amassing such a
breakout capability.

Note: I post actual backup proof, not propaganda.

Israeli intelligence officials, like other intelligence agencies worldwide,
estimate that once a decision to build a bomb is reached, it would take months
to upgrade the enrichment and months more to build a crude bomb - in all, a
year to 18 months.

Then, to fit a bomb to a Shahab-3 missile capable of striking Israel would
take Iran two years, Israeli defense officials say.

India & Pakistan were always pitched as "Arch Rivals" in the media. It has been at least 14 years since both have had nuclear weapons and 30+ years since their capitals are within reach of their missiles.

And yet there hasn't been a nuclear attack or a missile attack.

So all of this fear mongering about Iran's weapons needs to stop. This is BS to grab iranian oil.

Most of the 911 attackers were Saudi. Go and hold Saudis responsible for that first before Iran.

Fox360: We are the biggest consumers of the world's resources and, as such, an integral part of the global geo-political spectrum. We need others just as much as others need us. And, as the most powerful nation in the world, we are unfortunately also in the unenviable position of policeman, savior, and guarantor, a reality we cannot avoid if we are to maintain our current standard of living. And if you believe that radical Islam does not affect us, just consider the January 29, 2012 "Israel vs. Iran" article in the New York Times were it was noted that, "The Iranian regime will be several times more dangerous if it has a nuclear device in its hands...one that it could bring to the United States. It is not for nothing that it (i.e., Iran) is establishing bases for itself in Latin America and creating links with drug dealers on the US-Mexican border. This is happening in order to smuggle ordnance into the United States for the carrying out of terror attacks. Imagine this regime getting nuclear weapons to the US-Mexican border..." And have you already forgotten 9/11?

Basil - Your claim that Iran is establishing bases in Latin America and with Mexican cartels is pure Zionist propaganda. There isn't a gram of evidence to support your ridiculous statements.

All of our intelligence agencies have concluded that Iran does not have a nuclear weapons program, which counts for a lot more than your Zionist bs.

In a recent interview with CNN, Joint Chiefs Chairman Martin Dempsey said
he believed the Iranian regime was a "rational actor" when it comes to the nuclear program. Dempsey said Iran would likely weigh the
ultimate costs and benefits of building a nuclear weapon before doing so. James
Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, recently told a Senate panel
that a decision had not yet been made by the regime in Tehran.

I haven't forgotten that the Twin Towers, along with Bldg 7, which were owned by the same Zionist Jew, Larry Silverstein, were brought down in controlled demolitions, not airplanes. 9/11 was an inside job, with Mossad help. Silverstein insured the 3 building against a terrorist attack for billions, a few months before the attacks. Bldg 7 was not even hit by a plane, yet fell to the ground into it's own footprint in 6.5 seconds.

NPR has had several shows detailing all the evidence of a false flag attack, including the drills scheduled for NORAD on 9/11, with a plane flying into a building scenario. WOW, what an amazing coincidence!. The NORAD pilots were wondering "is it a drill" or not. The Pentagon was hit an hour after the Twin towers and still no intercept from NORAD. The alleged hi jackers could hardly fly Cessna's, yet we were led to believe they were able to hit the Pentagon, which would require all the skills of a veteran pilot.

Next time you call somebody a spineless two faced coward and a thief, have the moral fortitude and courage to stand up and get in their face while on the TV news . . . . up close and personal to the object of your bitter hate . . . . so you and your tiny world can hear what all the spineless cowards have to say about you and your kind.

You are just another common everyday bully who hides behind mama or the teacher or their spouse or the computer and mouths your emotionally crippled rants without seeing how ugly you are or knowing how dumb you sound.

Get a mirror and set it next to your computer screen so you can watch yourself as you type your "comments". What you will be looking at is an embittered emotionally stunted image lite up by computer light and not the star commentator you embellish yourself to be. If you don't feel regret for what you have done and said, then read your bible instead of mocking it, where it says there is NO forgiveness for you and God will not hear your prayers. And buddy, that means you are on your on.

Since you tried to quote scriptures, here is the one that applies to you and all you other bully haters: God ordains the heads of governments, not you and without your opinions or your vote. If you don't like the President, then you need to shut up and take your complaint to God.

It is true that we do have protected speech, but illegal speech is not protected.

That means you and all the other bullies who think that what they have learned from the news media makes them qualified to run everything, aren't covered by your computer screen or freedom of speech. You are the old sodom and gomorrah and I doubt that you have ever had a nice day.

He did a good job against Hamas rocket firing.

Israel should forget getting involved in Syria and Iran and other places where Shiites and Sunnis are battling on whose Allah is greater.

Iran can get nukes from Pakis.

When Shiites and Sunnis are battling, Israel should immediately clear Gaza of Hamas, a dangerous Sunni Saudi killer front organization.

It is bad news for Israel that another mad Sunni Saudi MB and its agent Morsi has taken over Egypt.

Fair or foul, Obama won the election. Methinks it's much better to consider how we're going to survive the next four years, rather than engage in senseless speculations, "if only"s, and backbiting. As for me, it only serves to reorient my understanding that politics and government cannot save us. Who can? Who wants to?

        #5.7 - Mon Nov 26, 2012 3:18 PM EST

Candy, c'mon now. Losers we are not. We are all in this together. I've seen a lot of backbiting and people saying this and that...I think that's the wrong focus. I didn't come out and say what my goals are and what my focus is, because I know people will react, call me crazy, etc. (and they have). I just think that if you voted for Obama, great. Let's get on with the business of making good choices and not counting in the government to save us. Here's a hint: Waiting until the building is on fire is a poor time to buy a fire extinguisher...get it? What are YOU doing, Candy, to make your neighborhood better? Your family? I think if we all had that focus, then we'd rise above the backbiting and blaming. Obama's president. Let's get over it and take care of our own front yards. If we all made that our focus, think of what a country we would be.

Or is it just an expression of tribal solidarity for you? The current conflict shows 5 dead Israelis and 150 dead Palestinians. That is a 30 to 1 murder to murder ratio. About Ehud Barak, i believe it is a great loss to Israeli leadership that they're going to have to do without a strong moderate voice in the parliament. I think that Sharon should have lost, but as it is with every election, people get tired of hearing and seeing the same thing and let things like fear, shame, or ignorance guide their choices. He deserves to have a peaceful place to spend the rest of his time in and if his country needs him again, i feel that he'll rise to the occasion. Israeli patriotism is endless, as is our American patriotism.

Barak reportedly was a good soldier when he served. He was a a Disaster a PM and an even a Worse DM. All of Israel's Enemies have been emboldened by his Weakness. Good Riddance to Israel's second worse Ehud, only after the Corrupt, Incompetent Olmert. Barak will remain Bibi's Biggest Mistake for three more months. America's "Biggest Mistake" barack will remain for four more years, unless we are as fortunate as Israel is today. Keep Praying.

I commented on this post early this morning and was number 2. I'm amazed to see that my post was deleted. Are we not allowed to report facts such as Ehud Barak killed people with his own hands on this site ? I suggested that your readers google Kamal Nasser or Dalal Mughrabi . My post was deleted ?????

Barak is no better than nittyahoo nor ariel sharon, with hands tinted with palestinian blood.

                      Jumping ship?

I guess he is getting his getaway because the inquiry begins. He doesn't want to take responsibility of the murders of women and children in Gaza by Israeli soldiers. Well you can run but you cannot hide for long in this world today, e.g. osama bin laden.

Maybe he can move in with his buddy, George WIII in Crawford, Texas?

israel usually elects mass murderers like Sharon and Netanyahu. Thats really all the Jews look for, who can kill the most Palestinian children, thats the guy that gets their vote.

Since Sharon is in a coma for the past 7 years (or is he dead already?), Netanyahoo is the next one in line, the only thing that he lacked was a Shabra-Shatila type massacre on his resume, and now by the Gaza war where he killed hundreds of women and children, he can proudly add that on his resume.

Why am I thinking, "smart crowbars", and "we've got nothing to worry about"....except, of course, those people in that Neo-NAZI Cell who've compromised those REALLY Big People in that one certain previous administration!

Otherwise.....Given the likliehood that certain "sovereignty-related decisions" are being made to the West Of You, and the likliehood that a 'Not Purple' Rain will start to fall to Your East, if'n the Iranians ever try to upset the kind of Detente that We, the USA know they want just as much because some of their 'other' neighbors concern then as much a Israel does......Try Thinking Shalom!
